It has been a basic component of both
the educational process and social
work practice. It has been recognized as
one of the unique characteristics of
social work and is generally regarded
positively. It is an integral part of most
social work agencies in the delivery of
social services
Supervision is a process by which
workers are helped by a designated
staff member to learn according to their
needs, to make the best use of their
knowledge and skills and to improve
their abilities so that they do their jobs
more effectively and with increasing
satisfaction to themselves and the
agency.
According to Halsey, supervision is the
process of selecting the right person for
each job so that each person is caused
to do his work skillfully, accurately,
intelligently, enthusiastically and
completely.
According to Dale Beach, supervision is
the function of leading, coordinating &
directing the work of others to
accomplish the designed objectives
IMPORTANCE OF THE SUPERVISION
Supervision ensures the continuity of work
operation and work performance.
Supervision also ensures the utilization of
resources in the best interests of the
enterprise. It also guarantees the proper
functioning of the work units, and removes
the minor maladies in the utilization of
labour force.
Supervision also provides proper guidance
to the worker.
 Effective supervision is also necessary to
proceed the work on the desired lines.
Supervision also provides timely
operational direction to the working force
in the organization.
Supervision is necessary to assure that the
programmes are being implemented
according to the desire of the executives.
Effective supervision also helps in
generating, sense of responsibility among
the personnel, working at lower levels.
 Supervision not only checks the misuse of time
and resources but it helps in promoting the
working efficiency by giving the personnel
situational encouragement through including
their good services in the files.
 By providing effective supervision the
employees need not bother waste their time in
attending less important works. Thus
supervisor acts as the loyal representative of
the employees and sincerely looks after their
interests. In the absence of supervision, the
wishes of the organization will remain
unfulfilled and the working force will behave
rather in disintegrating manner.
Functions
of
Supervision
Teaching function:
It is aimed at helping workers to increase
their knowledge and understanding in
order to deepen the professional
attitudes. It also involves assisting
workers to increase and improve their
social work practice and skills. Workers
learn by doing, then they discuss what
has gone well and what has been
difficult.
Administrative Function:
Administratively, the supervisor is involved
in directing and guiding workers, in helping
with management matters such as salaries,
promotion assignment of cases,
appointments to committees, or other
agency work.
The supervisor assures some uniformity of
quality and quantity in the work of the
staff.
Enabling Function:
It aims at facilitating the work of the
supervises, so they can do their parts
in the delivery of social services.
It means opening doors for the
utilization of their abilities and skills.
THANK YOU
