The Silverbrook Road at Monacan Road Walkway project has been substantially completed. The
scope of this project included 460 Feet of 5 foot wide concrete sidewalk and curb & gutter along

Silverbrook Road and Southrun Road Intersection improvements project was substantially completed on April 12, 2021. The overall project scope was to the increase in pedestrian safety along Silverbrook Road and its intersection with Southrun Road. The new pedestrian walkway consisted of 83 lineal feet of 5-foot-wide concrete sidewalk along with 224 lineal feet of 6-foot-wide asphalt walking path. Additionally, the Right Turn from Silverbrook Road onto Southrun Road was improved and lengthened. Along with the access improvements upgrades were made to the storm drain system and minor re-alignments of waterlines.

PowerPoint Westmoreland Street Bike Lanes - substantial completion

The project scope was the extension of road bike lanes along both sides of Westmoreland Street north of Rosemont Drive toward Old Chesterbrook Road. North West Street Sidewalk Improvements project was substantially completed on February 10, 2021. The project consisted of the construction of new concrete sidewalk, curb and gutter, curb ramps and reconstruction of driveways along the north side of North West Street between Great Falls Street and Brilyn Place. As part of this project, the North West Street - Great Falls Street intersection was reconstructed, and the traffic signal was replaced. The construction also included drainage improvements, installation of decorative streetlights, watermain relocation and betterments, paving, pavement marking and signage. The North West St. Sidewalk project is located in both Fairfax County and the City of Falls Church. The City and the County have agreed to bid and construct the project jointly with the City reimbursing the County for the City’s share of construction and administration costs.

North Shore Sidewalk Improvements

The North Shore Drive Sidewalk Improvements project has been Substantially Completed. The overall project scope was to increase pedestrian safety along North Shore Drive . The new pedestrian walkway consists of 2,315 lineal feet of 5-foot wide concrete sidewalk and 224 lineal feet of 6-foot wide asphalt walking path. The project started approximately 500 feet West of Sycamore Valley drive and extended to approximately 400 feet East of Links Drive. Also, along with the improved pedestrian access, upgrades were made to the storm drain system, a new concrete pad was placed for the existing bus shelter and the Eastbound lane of North Shore Drive was milled and new asphalt and striping was installed.

This project enhanced the access to mass transit by creating a more direct connection from the VRE Station to the residential areas west of Premier Court. This project also connects the Oak Bluff community to the Virginia Rail Express (VRE) Burke Station and provides a multi-use shared pedestrian and bicycle trail for outdoor recreation.

During a routine Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) Camera inspection by Wastewater Collection Division (WCD), it was found that 45 linear feet of 8-inch asbestos reinforced concrete pipe (RCP) between MH-292 to MH-291 was within imminent danger of failing. The bottom of the RCP was missing within the 45 linear feet of repair and the pipe was on the verge of surcharging. After an immediate pre-construction meeting with Merrifield Nursery, it was agreed to work from 6pm-10am everyday of the week to avoid disruption and potentially placing patrons at risk during the biggest time of the year for Merrifield Garden Center. The contractor mobilized to the site and began the 20-foot excavation to replace 45 linear feet of broken gravity sewer. The project started on March 14th, 2022 and was substantially complete on March 23, 2022.

The Sully Basins Stormwater Pond Retrofits project was substantially completed on April 19, 2022. The project is located within the Cub Run watershed. The project consisted of repair and enhancement of multiple stormwater basins, 0326DP, 0964DP and 1484DP. The project also included construction of new stone cascades, stone weir basin structures and the construction of wetlands with high and low marsh areas. The project will facilitate improved sediment removal and improve downstream water quality using forebays and micro pools. Aquatic and natural habitat were also added within the three basins.

The Scotts Run project consisted of restoring, enhancement, and stabilizing of approximately 2,930 linear feet of eroding stream using Natural Channel Design criteria. This project included two phases: Phase I was funded by proffers from a private development and Phase II was County funded. Also included was the removal of invasive non-native plants and the installation of new plantings to stabilize the stream and floodplain.

LAKE BARTON DREDGING, RESTORATION AND RISER MODIFICATION PROJECT

The Lake Barton Dredging, Restoration, and Riser Modification project was substantially completed on December 29, 2021. The project is located within the Pohick Creek watershed. The project consisted of dredging and removal of approximately 19,100 cubic yards of sediment to restore the sediment trapping capacity and improve water quality. The project also included construction of new sediment forebays, in-lake haul roads, and riser modifications (new mid-level sluice gate and cold-water intake) to facilitate future maintenance, stabilize the shoreline, and improve downstream water quality. Fish habitat was also added within the lake.

This report explores the significance of border towns and spaces for strengthening responses to young people on the move. In particular it explores the linkages of young people to local service centres with the aim of further developing service, protection, and support strategies for migrant children in border areas across the region. The report is based on a small-scale fieldwork study in the border towns of Chipata and Katete in Zambia conducted in July 2023. Border towns and spaces provide a rich source of information about issues related to the informal or irregular movement of young people across borders, including smuggling and trafficking. They can help build a picture of the nature and scope of the type of movement young migrants undertake and also the forms of protection available to them. Border towns and spaces also provide a lens through which we can better understand the vulnerabilities of young people on the move and, critically, the strategies they use to navigate challenges and access support. The findings in this report highlight some of the key factors shaping the experiences and vulnerabilities of young people on the move – particularly their proximity to border spaces and how this affects the risks that they face. The report describes strategies that young people on the move employ to remain below the radar of visibility to state and non-state actors due to fear of arrest, detention, and deportation while also trying to keep themselves safe and access support in border towns. These strategies of (in)visibility provide a way to protect themselves yet at the same time also heighten some of the risks young people face as their vulnerabilities are not always recognised by those who could offer support. In this report we show that the realities and challenges of life and migration in this region and in Zambia need to be better understood for support to be strengthened and tuned to meet the specific needs of young people on the move. This includes understanding the role of state and non-state stakeholders, the impact of laws and policies and, critically, the experiences of the young people themselves. We provide recommendations for immediate action, recommendations for programming to support young people on the move in the two towns that would reduce risk for young people in this area, and recommendations for longer term policy advocacy.

In this talk, Dr. Cori Faklaris of UNC Charlotte provides an overview of current AI capabilities and weaknesses to consider when integrating current AI technologies into the data workflow. The talk is organized around three takeaways: (1) For better or sometimes worse, AI provides you with “infinite interns.” (2) Give people permission & guardrails to learn what works with these “interns” and what doesn’t. (3) Create a roadmap for adding in more AI to assist nonprofit work, along with strategies for bias mitigation.
