Essay about The American Dream Facade
If the American Dream had to be captured within a frozen image, how would the visualization be
conveyed? For the majority of today s society, the image would likely include the traditional father,
mother, and child(ren) standing pleasantly beside a moderate two story home, a well kept lawn, and
neatly trimmed hedges. In the background of this family portrait, a guarded and welcoming
neighborhood would appear, complete with similar home designs and family arrangements lining its
streets. In other words, the image of the American Dream resides within the typical American suburb.
And within this typical suburb lies (supposedly) the remaining components of the ideal American
lifestyle.
From the moment William Levitt created the first ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Largely a result of the lifestyles portrayed on suburban based television shows, the suburbs have
consistently been deemed the ideal environment for the ideal family of high moral standards From the
initial episodes of Leave it to Beaver in the 1950 s to the modernized episodes of Home Improvement
in the 1990 s, suburban TV sitcoms have bombarded America with images of hard working and
devoted mother/father pairs who guide their essentially normal children through the obstacles of
childhood and adolescence. As the television critic Michael V. Tueth revealed in a recent publication
of the Journal of Popular Film and Television, these television shows allowed suburbia to evolve into
the home of parental wisdom and spousal forgiveness as well as children s fantasies and nonsense
(98). Surprisingly, because America s actual suburban children record and obtain overall success
through adulthood, these television lifestyles did not seem too far fetched. Unfortunately, through
recent years, this affirmed connection between the suburbs and the perfect family environment has
become more of an intended assumption rather than a reality.
While today s society places great significance on acquiring the appearance of the traditional America
family, it places little, if any, importance on actually filling its shoes. When two teenagers

What Is A Leg Workout Essay
The Leg Workout for Mass!
The Leg Workout for Mass is designed to build your quads into mighty pillars of strength. A huge,
well shaped and defined leg is something to behold. Another thing about massive ripped thighs is that
hardly anybody has them. Some guys have a lean waistline, and others have big arms or chest, but
only a serious lifter has big, cut legs. This Leg Workout for Mass can help you truly stand out in a
crowd.
For a great leg workout, I have found that you need to warm up with some light cardio first. Walk,
Run, or ride a bike for about 10 minutes to get the blood pumping and to loosen up. Stretch your legs
out and get ready for the hard work to come.

Ap Human Geography Essay
Human geography is the study of spatial characteristics of humans and human activities.
Cartographers use maps in order to display human geography and all of the characteristics behind it.
Many people rely on maps on a day to day basis. These visual aids are used for reference tools,
communication tools, and data. Cartographers are precise with the information displayed in order to
refer/communicate data accurately. A thematic map is a map that communicates this data. Thematic
maps can be broken down into subparts: dot distribution, proportional symbol, isoline, cartogram, and
choropleth. To focus in on a specific map, a choropleth uses color to represent data. This type of map

Essay about Wide Sargasso Sea and Antoinette
Wide Sargasso Sea and Jane Eyre intertwined
In Wide Sargasso Sea, author Jean Rhys uses intertextuality to tell the story of Antoinette Mason.
Intertexuality is when an author bases their book/novel off of another text. In this case, Wide Sargasso
Sea is shaped from Charlotte Bronte s Jane Eyre and it elaborates on the character of Bertha, who is
Antoinette Mason in Rhys novel. By reading Wide Sargasso Sea we are enlightened on things in Jane
Eyre that Bronte does not tell us about or elaborate on. Also, by reading Jane Eyre we understand
things about Wide Sargasso Sea that Rhys doesn t include in her novel. Both authors have created
compelling novels that aren t built from each other and provides a deeper understanding of one ...

From the story of her life we get a better understanding of her role as a character in Jane Eyre and
perhaps most of the mystery we have is cleared up. Wide Sargasso Sea is a very creative literary piece
that provides depth to a character whose story would have gone untold.
After reading Wide Sargasso Sea we have a better understanding of Jane Eyre and some of the events
that took place within the novel. We find more out about Rochester s dark past; Bronte just didn t go
far enough back to enlighten us on his marriage. After reading Rhys s Wide Sargasso Sea we now
know how Rochester and Antoinette s relationship came to be. Their marriage was arranged so that
Rochester would have financial stability because he was the second son and was likely to not inherit
anything from his father. Rochester felt he was duped into marrying Antoinette by his father and
everyone else. In one scene Rochester says, As I walked I remembered my father s face and his thin
lips, my brother s round conceited eyes. They knew. And Richard the fool, he knew too...They all
knew. (Rhys 62). He thinks everyone knew Antoinette was crazy but didn t tell him. Rochester seems
to be ashamed with himself over locking Antoinette in the attic, but he feels like it was the right thing
for him to do. He would have had a miserable life and also would have put everyone in danger at
Thornfield, with crazy Antoinette around. Antoinette was a lunatic and if Rochester had to put up with

From the writing at home to the speeches at church, Anne Bradstreet and Jonathan Edwards are two
religious authors during the Puritan Times. A woman poet of a time against woman s independence
and a preacher of full religion devotion, Bradstreet and Edwards concept of religion were presented
similarly but not alike. Bradstreet s aspects of religious views were focused upon praising God and
loving her family and husband. Edwards perspective of his sermons were strongly influenced by
religion about praising the Lord or to suffer in hell if not. Bradstreet s poems, Upon the Burning of
Our Home and To My Dear and Loving Husband , expresses emotional tone and gratefulness towards
God. Edwards sermon, Sinners in the Hand of an Angry God , indicates the power of God and anger
he has towards the non believers. Anne Bradstreet and Jonathan Edwards have strong belief in God,

Ethics Of Fair Play And Ethics In Soccer
Fair Play and Ethics in Soccer Soccer is the biggest sport in the world, boasting a fan base of over four
billion people worldwide. It is without a doubt a very loved sport, but that doesn t mean that the sport
holds a perfect record of being clean and not being disliked. Fernando Torres goes down inside the
box in the 89th minute, but the question is whether the ref has given a penalty (Martin Tyler Chelsea
vs Liverpool). Flopping is one of the biggest debates on this concept, because if not identified it goes
against fair play rules and moral standards. In the case above a penalty was awarded in the ending
minutes of a match to declare one team the winner over the opposing side. This would not have been a
problem if an actual foul was committed in the box, but when looking back at the footage you can see
that the player obviously flopped upon contact and no call should have been given at that time. FIFA,
the leading soccer association, stands highly to support the enforcement of fair play and ethics in
soccer, but there is only so much they can do and so much that has been done. Due to this dilemma,
soccer as a sport receives a lot of heat on this and has been trying to cut down on unruly incidents that
go against ethics and fair play. Flopping isn t the only thing that goes against fair play and ethics, there
is a multitude of ethical and moral rules being broken.
The ethics of soccer is a complicated topic to approach. First of all, soccer is a worldwide sport, so

How did American businesses go about getting big after the civil war? What role did the government
play in the rise of big business? What were the social costs of the rise of big business?
After the civil war, American economy evolved from family business to cooperate business. It was the
start of the Industrial Revolution the way good and services made and sold were transformed through
technological innovations and creative financing. There were several leading industries because of
their role in industrial revolution. Railroad were important for transportation of good and people, coal
and petroleum were important for the high demand to power the industries and steel were needed for
the infrastructures. These industries were often controlled by a small group of businessmen. For
instance, John D. Rockefeller was one of the mogul, who succeed in controlling the petroleum
industry by using mostly the horizontal integration effort, which is the practice of taking control of the
competitors. By gaining control of the oil companies, he could lower the cost, decide the price and
maximize profits. Horizontal integration with the combination of vertical integration which a business

The Life Of Sarah And Hagar, Or Jezebel And Rahab Today
How does one read the story of Sarah and Hagar, or Jezebel and Rahab today, if one is a woman
reader situated in a postcolonial society? This question animates Judith E. McKinlay s Reframing Her:
Biblical Women in Postcolonial Focus. In this text, McKinlay takes different biblical women s
narrative and gives them agency. McKinaly opens this text from both with a feminist hermeneutic and
a postcolonial criticism that helps to shape the context and location for the women she will explore
and also her own personal context. One of the things I most appreciated about the opening us this
book is the location in which she situates herself. She is a New Zealander, a Pakeha, which is
described by the people of Maori, for people who are not Maori. Her narrative becomes critical in how
she shapes these biblical women who are considered outsiders from those within. Location and
identity politics becomes a critical theme within this text. I can remember Historian Vincent Harding
who would open his class asking everyone to identify who they were and where they were from. At
the time, I never understood why that was necessarily, but as a historian, I understand to know who we
are and where we are from shapes our context. This text was helpful in helping me to understand how
to relate to different people with different biblical understandings. In this text, McKinlay critically
reflects within her culture (New Zealand) and how they come to understand Christianity and their

Mount Vesuvius Research Paper

Europe and is considered one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world! It s elevation is over
4,000 feet (1,219 m) and the distance around the base is 30 miles (48.3 km). This humongous
mountain is located in Ottaviano, Metropolitan City of Naples, Italy, which is now known for its
ancient castles and history. It took about 300,000 years for Mount Vesuvius to look the way it does
today. This volcano started forming on the ocean floor as a submarine volcano. This mountain is a

On every eruption, volcanic ash starts forming after all the gases in magma expand and escape into the
atmosphere. Volcanic soils, also called andisols, form after all the volcanic ash from previous
eruptions accumulates. These soils bond well with organic materials, which facilitates the plants to
utilize the minerals in the soil as nutrients. As a result of all the organic minerals in the volcano s
caldera, it is now covered with trees and plants.
Mount Vesuvius has erupted about three dozen times since 79 A.D. It s most recent eruption was on
the year of 1944. But it wasn t as powerful as the 79 A.D. eruption, which by the way is the most
famous and well known. The eruption buried three nearby towns, one of which was Pompeii. It was
buried under 18 feet (5.5 m) of rubble, ash and pumice.
In A.D. 79, the Roman naturalist and historian Pliny the Younger, just 18 years old at the time, wrote
letters about the event. According to the book Volcanoes of the World: Mount Vesuvius, He wrote that
it was like a storm of stones. He was the first person in history ever to record information about
volcanoes. As a result of this, scientists now call eruptions of the most dangerous kind, like this one,
plinian. Because his written records gives scientists the earliest sight into a volcanic eruption, they
believe that the 79 A.D. eruption lasted for about 18 hours and created a cloud of ash 20 miles (32.2

The Cultural Heritage Of Syria
I intend to concentrate on the cultural heritage of Syria throughout the duration of this report, however
the the massive losses in life and property incurred over the course of the now five year long Civil
War in Syria is a major factor in the discussion in regards to what remains, and what has been
destroyed, among Syria s tangible cultural heritage in the form of monuments, historical architecture,
and various other pieces of art1. The tangible heritage that remains in the region effected by the Syrian
Civil War is testament to thousands of years of culture, history and civilization, which must be
protected and efforts must be put forth in its preservation. However, this heritage was built by the
ancestors of those who have gone, and is a symbol of past peoples. Those who remain however, are
suffering from the onslaughts of both terrorist groups one one hand, and are the victims of conflict
between the Free Syrian Army and the forces of President Bashar Al Asad2. It is a logistical and moral
quagmire to divert and commit forces to either one or the other, to protect them both from the
destruction in the ongoing conflict. Should international and local military focus and effort emphasize
the protection of priceless artifacts that are irreplaceable assets for the Syrian people and the world at
large? Or should focus instead be diverted to protecting internally displaced persons in the region, as
well as those entrenched in areas with intense fighting?

November 17, 2015 Introduction
This paper will analyze the key legal issues with respect to legalizing self driving cars in the United
States of America. The legal issues to be analyzed will include...
How many people say they would buy a self driving car (Statista)
Percentage of accidents attributed to human error (NHTSA Report)
Researchers estimate that driverless cars could, by midcentury, reduce traffic fatalities by up to 90
percent. (McKinsey Report) Which means that, using the number of fatalities in 2013 as a baseline,
self driving cars could save 29,447 lives a year. (Atlantic, 30000)
Liabilities around self driving cars also include potential negative economic effects, ethical arguments,
privacy and security, will not be considered due to space constraints
The technology is so new that the legal definitions of what constitutes a autonomous vehicle is still

We Propose A Novel Framework For Tweet Segmentation
Abstract Twitter has become one of the most important communication channels with its ability
providing the most up to date and newsworthy information. Considering wide use of twitter as the
source of information, reaching an interesting tweet for user among a bunch of tweets is challenging.
A huge amount of tweets sent per day by hundred millions of users, information overload is inevitable.
For extracting information in large volume of tweets, Named Entity Recognition (NER), methods on
formal texts. However, many applications in Information Retrieval (IR) and Natural Language
Processing (NLP) suffer severely from the noisy and short nature of tweets. In this paper, we propose
a novel framework for tweet segmentation in a batch mode, called HybridSeg by splitting tweets into
meaningful segments, the semantic or context information is well preserved and easily extracted by
the downstream applications. HybridSeg finds the optimal segmentation of a tweet by maximizing the
sum of the stickiness scores of its candidate segments. The stickiness score considers the probability
of a segment being a phrase in English (i.e., global context) and the probability of a segment being a
phrase within the batch of tweets (i.e., local context). For the latter, we propose and evaluate two
models to derive local context by considering the linguistic features and term dependency in a batch of
tweets, respectively. HybridSeg is also designed to iteratively learn from confident segments as

Summary Of Herman Hesse s Demian
Herman Hesse s Demian emphasizes the importance of change and self discovery. Emil Sinclair, the
story s protagonist, experiences various adjustments, which in time influence his values and identity.
As the story develops, Sinclair acquaints himself to Max Demian, an intellectual being, who further
encourages him to acknowledge the human s definite capabilities. Through his interpretation of Cain,
Demian impacts the way in which Sinclair views the world. His understanding of the story contradicts
the standard Christian narrative. Seeing as his principal conflict revolves around the distinction of the
good and the bad, Sinclair continuously suppresses his feelings towards the controversial aspect of
things. Through this, one becomes aware of the depicted duality of Cain and Abel. Furthermore,
Sinclair progressively becomes intrigued with the world s divergence which is contradictory to
Christianity and its values. The incorporation of Cain and Abel is quite controversial, in terms of
society and its standards. All in all, Hesse impeccably interprets Cain s mark by bringing awareness to
the characters possessing alternate mindsets. This essay serves to address the interpretation of Cain s
mark, as Hesse demonstrates its existence through distinguishing individuals, and its effect on society.
Conforming with societal norms, the story s protagonist is patently characterized through his
innocence and his perception of the world. Due to its assurance of freedom and safety, Emil

From the micro level to the macro level globalization has transformed the world into a smaller place
with constant interactions occurring at every moment between nations, institutions, groups, and

this reason one cannot ignore the importance and impact of migrant populations in the country they

Mexican and Central American populations in California have become essential to the economy of

Prison In To Kill A Mockingbird
Prisons are defined as buildings in which people are legally held as a punishment for a crime they
have committed or while awaiting trial. Prisoners are usually convicted of a crime, such as shoplifting

answer lies within Harper Lee s To Kill a Mockingbird. Written by Harper Lee, To Kill a Mockingbird
is a novel that was first published in the 1960s during the Civil Rights Movement. Thus, it is logical
that the novel is set in 1930s Maycomb, Alabama, a setting that contains deep rooted racism and social

ordination of your muscles, by training purely within your mind. Imagery rests on the important
principle that you can exercise these parts of you brain with imputes from our imagination rather than
from your sences: the parts of the brain that you train with imagery experience imagined and real
inputs similarly, with the real inputs being merely more vividly experienced (Rainer 1987).
Simulation is similar to imagery in that it seeks to improve the quality of training by teaching your
brain to cope with circumstances that would not be otherwise met until an important competition was
reached. Simulation, however, is carried out by making your physical training circumstances as
similar as possible to the quot;real thing quot; for example by bringing in crowds of spectators, by
having performances judged, or by inviting press to a training session (Rainer 1987).
Deciding your Commitment to your sport is possibly the most important
quot;Sports Psychology quot; decision you will make. It is important to realize that excellence
demands complete dedication: if you want to be the top athlete, then training to be the top athlete must
be the most important thing in you life (Orlick 1994).

Hearing Loss Data Analysis
LINICAL DATAANALYSIS The type of hearing loss was classified as sensorineural, conductive, or
mixed according to the European Working Group on Genetics of Hearing Impairment.21 Conductive
hearing loss was defined as normal bone conduction thresholds (20 dB) and an averaged air bone
gap of 15 dB or more for 500, 1000, and 2000 Hz. Mixed hearing loss was defined as a bone
conduction threshold greater than 20 dB in combination with an averaged air bone gap 15 dB or more
for 500, 1000, and 2000 Hz. Sensorineural hearing loss was defined as an averaged air bone gap of
less than 15 dB for 500, 1000, and 2000 Hz. The degree of hearing loss was categorized in 2 different
ways: employment of commonly used age independent clinical guidelines,22 and ... Show more

Low frequency and midfrequency thresholds were most commonly affected in the youngest age
groups. High frequency configurations in young children were gently sloping, whereas older subjects
had steeply sloping high frequency configurations. To identify the contribution of the underlying gene
mutations to the observed sensorineural hearing loss, audiometric thresholds at 500, 1000, 2000, 4000,
and 8000 Hz, as well as PTAs, were compared with those reported for an otologically screened
population 25 years and older.23,24 Subjects with a history of otologic surgery were excluded from
our analysis. Fourteen had undergone prior placement of 1 or more sets of tympanostomy tubes and 2
had undergone tympanoplasties (no subjects reported a history of mastoidectomy). As shown in Figure
2, approximately 60% (14 of the 24 subjects) of all affected adults with complete bone conduction
data had at least 2 thresholds above the 95th percentile or, in the case of 8000 Hz, above the 90th
percentile. 2 Analysis revealed no statistically significant correlation between the number of

The Two Chinese Philosophies Of Confucianism
The two Chinese philosophies of Legalism and Confucianism could not be more opposite. Even
though two of the writers of Legalism were students of Xinzu, a philosopher of Confucianism, there
are more of differences than similarities between the two. Because of this, legalism, which preceded
the concept of Confucianism, had a lot of reasons why Confucianism was considered wrong. While
towards the fall of the Qin Dynasty, Confucian beliefs started to revamp and become more widely
accepted and thus they were blended together to some extent, this was not the case beforehand, in fact
it could be argued that blending the two together seemed almost impossible. Confucianism stressed
the ideas of the knowledge, humaneness, and filial piety while legalism stressed power, rewards and
punishments, and agricultural wealth. Thus from a legalist standpoint, Confucianism was considered
wrong because it placed value on virtues instead of the laws, focusing on education to prosper growth
and moral character instead of simply obeying societal laws and valuing agricultural wealth rather
than humaneness Thus differences far exceed similarities between these two ancient beliefs. However,
both have made everlasting marks on Chinese culture and tradition that to this day still exists.
Here is my suggestion for a more succinct and focused intro, deleting what you have above:

Coach Foster Case Summary
Mr. Mullen, Below is the email that Coach Wells (CRHS) sent to Mr. Sheffield and copies Coach
Bouthillier (LHS) and Coach Foster (CHS) regarding the equability of the 15 meets (5 per HS) at the
new YMCA. Also below is Mr. Sheffield s reply which indicates that, No dates were scheduled at the
meeting . It goes on to state, I left that up to each school . This appears to be the issue. In addition I
would HIGLY suggest that on the days of ANY school s meets at the YMCA, that the base school at
the YMCA (LHS) would either schedule an AWAY meet and/or should practice at Bicentennial Pool
(CR). If it happens to be to be on a rare day that CRHS has practice (and not a meet) at the
Bicentennial Pool then LHS could practice after CRHS finishes as has been the case in these current
years. My concern for suggesting this is that I am not sure it is the best arrangement to have a team
practicing while another team is setting up for the meet and a third team is coming from away to
prepare for the meet. At Bicentennial there is a great amount of room when this had to take place. ...

American Bullishness In We Were Soldiers
First Part: Americans Bullishness Throughout the rest of time, many young Americans will believe,
due to movies and US written history, that the United States had won the war against Vietnam.
However, to this day, both sides will claim victory in the war. The idea of America s great military
losing to an enemy is indefinitely attempted to be blocked out and washed away. The strategy is not
meant to lie to the American people but rather sustain the idea and nationalism that if a problem
ensues, the US military has the power to defend itself. The film, We Were Soldiers, is expected to
represent the American military dream and win the hearts of all Americans watching it. However, the
movie takes a more realistic view and reveals American soldiers disdain but resilient passion, the ...

Welfare Reform For Drug Test Recipients Essay
Pretend you are in kindergarten again and you have just won your favorite bag of candy for behaving
yourself in class all week, and right when the teacher presents you with your glorious prize a fellow
classmate, which had already been to the principals twice that week, comes up and asks for a piece.
You do not want to give him a piece because you worked hard for it and he broke the rules so he does
not deserve it, but then he goes to complain to the teacher and she says you have to share with him.
Would you be upset if you worked hard to obey the rules to win a bag of candy, and then you find out
that you could have gotten a piece anyways? This is exactly how many taxpayers feel about welfare
recipients that refuse to take drug test prior to receiving their welfare checks. Since 1996 there has
been a call for welfare reform to drug test recipients prior to admission, but any attempts have been
unsuccessful because they are viewed as a violation of the fourth amendment, more harmful for
children, and an unnecessary expense. These common fallacies have been the main arguments leading
the anti drug testing campaign, but in the past few years many taxpayers have grown increasingly tired
of their money being given to undeserving individuals, although there has not been a clear solution to
please all parties. To begin, what is welfare? Welfareinfo.org gives the history and current facts about
welfare. Welfare is a government funded program put in action during the great

Women In Christianity And Islam
Christianity and Islam both believe women are inferior to men. However, historically, women had
more rights in Islam than in Christianity. Both religions have similarities along with its differences in
how women were treated through the religion. Women had little to no rights by any means in both
religions, one a little harsher than the other. Christianity and Islam both believe women are inferior to
men. The reason for this is that many stories in the Christian Scripture as being less spiritual as men.
For example, Women are known to be crated in both Islam and Christianity from man and for man. By

How Absinthe Is AAlcoholic Distilled Spirit
Absinthe is a highly alcoholic distilled spirit, reputed to have psychotropic qualities. In the history of
liquors it holds a special place for being one of the most controversial drinks of French history. Yet it
wasn t always that way, for a period in the late 1800 s absinthe was one of the most popular liquors in
the western world. Some companies at the height of its popularity produced over 30,000 liters of it a
day. American Chemist T. A. Breaux has spent years researching the drink; through his research he has
found that the drink originated as a medicine developed as a digestive aide in the late 1700 s (pg.2 3).
The drink then rose in popularity after the 1840 s when the French government would dispense rations
of the drink to its soldiers fighting in foreign campaigns as a means of purifying unclean water. These
soldiers developed a taste for the drink claiming it to be the drink of a true man, due to its strong bitter
taste (pg. 4 5). By the late 1870 s it became the most coveted drink, especially among artist and
intellectuals who would feature the iconic drink in their works. Such as Edgar Degas famous Painting
L Absinthe or The Absinthe Drinker, painted in 1876 the painting depicts two figures of a woman and
a man sitting inside a French café, Café la Nouvelle Athènes in Paris. In the painting the man dressed

Kidney disease 3 blood count indicates anemia due to decreased production of erythropoietin (Castner,

cause and stage of the disease. A renal biopsy may also be performed. These diagnostic tests determine
the progression of the disease. There are five stages of chronic kidney disease. The treatment plan
depends on the stage of the disease. If it is diagnosed in stage one, the patient and physician can work
to treat the contributing factors and slow the progression of the disease. By the fifth stage the patient is
on dialysis, needs a transplant, or in the most severe cases is in hospice care (Castner, 2010).
Educating the patient is a very important part of the nursing role. The patient with chronic kidney
disease needs to be educated on the disease process, how to slow the progression of the disease,
medications, diet restrictions, dialysis and how to care for the dialysis access site, and the importance
of regular visits with their physician. The more a patient knows, the more he/she can be proactive in
the treatment plan. Kidney disease is manageable if diagnosed early and the patient needs to

Justice In Plato s Republic
The meaning and measure of justice is the primary topic in Book I of Plato s Republic. In that book,
Socrates converses with a number of his friends concerning the question, What is justice? The debate
starts with conversations between Socrates and Cephalus, Polemarchus, Cleitophon, and finally
Thrasymachus. The initial theory put forward, was that justice was always speaking truthfully and
repaying debts. Through many phases and discussions, Socrates takes the crowd from that definition,
and finally agrees that justice is virtue and wisdom and that injustice is vice and ignorance. (350d).
From there, Socrates goes back to a prior theme that injustice is stronger and more powerful than
justice. Socrates points out to Thrasymachus, that if justice is wise then injustice cannot be more
powerful. Socrates did not think that the just man would always suffer and in fact felt that even unjust
men were just in their treatment of each other. In order to illustrate the point, Socrates asks
Thrasychamus to consider what might happen if cities that conquer others or gangs that ... Show more

If there is not a code of honor among thieves, then the unjust society (gangs) will collapse. Socrates
contends that injustice causes civil war, hatred, and fighting among themselves, while justice brings
friendship, and a sense of common purpose. (351d) Even among thieves, justice allows there to be
unity and civility. From that position, Socrates swings the debate around and asks Thrasychamus if he
believes that even if only two people are at odds, they will be soon be enemies with each other and to
others as well. When Thrasychamus agrees, Socrates inquires whether Thrasychamus sees that even
injustice inside one person will result in that person being at war with himself and not able to
accomplish anything good. Hence, justice inside one person will create

How Sexuality is Socially Constructed Essay
From birth, one s sexuality is shaped by society. Cultures institute behaviors that are to be seen as the
societal norms, which work to constantly reinforce societal expectations of how genders should act in
relation to one another. Although some may argue that one s sexuality is an innate characteristic
resulting from genetic makeup, there is a large amount of evidence pointing to its social construction
instead. Through the power differences between males and females, established gender roles, and
drastic economic shifts, society establishes sexuality and reinforces the behaviors that are expected of
its citizens.
As Tamsin Wilton explains in her piece, Which One s the Man? The Heterosexualisation of Lesbian
Sex, society has fronted ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Wilton later describes how, by turning away from the heterosexual male female institution, women are
taking a crucial step on the path of liberation. Although a woman may be content having relations with
a male, the male s dominant role in society should be enough persuasion for the former to leave such
structured relationship so as to explore a freer partnership that goes against societal expectations.
Wilton refers to Monique Wittig, a French author and feminist theorist, who states our survival
demands that we contribute all our strength to the destruction of the class of women within which men
appropriate women. Thus, Wittig expresses that heterosexuality is a social system (Wilton 165). Why
heterosexuality is forced upon the majority, however, is still unclear. Emily Martin, in her article, The
Egg and the Sperm: How Science has Constructed a Romance Based on Stereotypical Male Female
Roles, explains why this is so. Procreation can only occur upon the union of sperm and egg and their
behaviors have created stereotypes which imply not only that female biological processes are less
worthy than their male counterparts but also that women

Argumentative Essay On Do Aliens Exist
Is There Life Other Than Ours?
Have you ever seen a mysterious object floating amongst the sky and wondered just what it could be?

Aliens are a controversy among many, and there is such a vast amount of evidence of their existence
that it is difficult not to believe in them. The talk of another life form in our galaxy seems impeccably
unlikely to most. People who do not believe in aliens think that the mere thought of them existing is
inane. They could not care less about putting in the effort of proving their point that otherworldly

An Ideological Level, James Sets Up Two Systems Essay
On an ideological level, James sets up two systems: the modern sexual emancipator represented in
Olive, and the radical conservative represented in Basil. Verena has to choose between them. Basil
considers that Olive s views about women s liberation are inanities she is not sure of their meanings:
the inanities she uttered ─ the rights and wrongs of women, the equality of the sexes, the hysterics of
conventions, the further stultification of the suffrage, the prospect of conscript mothers in the national
Senate. It made no difference; she didn t mean it; she didn t know what she meant, she had been
stuffed with this trash by her father, and she was neither more nor less willing to say it than to say
anything else (James, Bostonians 62).
Basil s masculinity and his indifference towards feminist ideals constantly always annoys Olive
Chancellor who accuses him of bieng the stiffest of conservatives whose minds were steeled against
women.
The female struggle against patriarchy is not confined to Olive and Verena but the other minor
characters fill out the picture of the Bostonian feminist society. Miss Birdseye is a very elderly

perhaps one of the reasons why his work, and this volume The Icarus Deception are so interesting. He
uses the title character whose determination to succeed led to his demise, as we all know in a
fascinating illustration of his belief that, where Icarus is concerned, first appearances are very

Strength Training
The benefit of strength and strength training for footballers is well supported by research. For
example, De Proft and colleagues had one group of Belgian professionals perform extra weight
training during the season. Compared to a control group of colleagues who did no extra training, the
players improved their kicking power and leg strength. Reilly (1990)[2] showed that the stronger
players outlasted the weaker players in terms of a regular place in the team, and had reduced injury
risks. He recommends that leg strength in particular is developed, especially in the quadriceps and
hamstrings, to help stabilise the knee joint, which is the most frequently injured joint in football. Apor

These exercises demand a high force of contraction in response to a rapid loading of lengthening
muscles. For this reason, they should be more accurately called reversible action or rebound exercises.
The training effort increases the force production in the muscles, but the movements are performed at
faster speeds than weight training exercises. Thus rebound exercises are more specific to the sprinting
and jumping movements in football. These exercises should be done in 3 5 sets of 8 repetitions for
each leg, with at least one minute s rest between sets. The quality and speed of the movement is the
priority. The other training element that is required for improving sprinting speed is sprinting itself.
This should be done with maximum efforts over 30 60m. Again, at least one minute s rest between
runs should be allowed so that quality can be maintained. Remember, with this kind of training the
aim is to develop the maximum speed; endurance should not become a factor. Sprinting done uphill,
with weighted jackets, or towing weights is also useful because it adds resistance to the sprint
movement, placing greater load on the muscles in the most specific manner. Again, short distances

Similarities Between The House And A Doll House
Mi esha Straughn
Dr. Willis

ENG 102 Mini Term
The Relation of Societal Problems in A Dollhouse and The Bear, A Joke in One Act The social
normalities that are prevalent in modern society have made substantial changes over time. What one
may think is proper and acceptable in a society may be completely different to someone else. Many
things have caused this societal difference. Particularly, the use of literary works to show different
societies in related time periods has constantly shaped thoughts over this controversial topic. From
poems, to short stories, to even plays, the use of literary works to show societal issues has become
increasingly normalized. The Bear, A Joke in One Act is a one act play written by Anton Chekhov that
explores many societal issues, as well as A Dollhouse written by Henry Ibsen. The authors choice of
literary elements, and the portrayal of contentment versus happiness, helps to shape both plays and
abets each ending with a mutual theme that becomes evident to the audience. The subject matter
reviewed in both plays show similarities and differences that unify to relate back to the overall theme
of societal problems in comparable eras. Anton Chekhov, the most prominent Russian dramatist of his
time, wrote plays about the humdrum life of inconspicuous, sensitive people, whose lives fall prey to
the hollowness and tedium of a disintegrating social order (Augustyn). His intellectual work in The
Bear, A Joke in One Act refelects this statement greatly. This play was one of Chekhov s most
successful plays in his lifetime and sought him great fame and fortune (Tanitch). The Bear, A Joke in
One Act , showed realistic themes and situations relatable to the era. Some viewed Chekhov to have a
poor and jilted view of women (Tanitch). He chose to write about women from various perspectives.
In this play, Chekhov highlights a very emotional woman who lets all her energy, happiness, and
awareness die with her husband. From this, readers can also see the presence of social issues in the
form of males versus females in previous eras. Mrs. Popov is one of the main characters in this play,
and she is grieving her husband s death. Around the time Mr. Smirnov, the

Why I Want To Attend Boarding School
How did I get here? A question that finds its way to the front of my thoughts on almost nightly basis
since I began high school at Phillips Academy. I ponder how my low income, black, public school
educated and sarcastic being was capable of manipulating its way through lengthy admissions forms,
holistic selection committees, and wine up at one of the best high schools in the nation. How?
My braids sink into my pillow each night as this thought crosses my mind. This question is never from
a place of regret for attending boarding school, but a consideration of all of the students who come
from similar backgrounds as I do and why I was the one who made it out. Why is it that I dissected my
on shark in biology class while my friends at home shared the same seven year old textbooks. How
come I have opportunities to travel to different countries while my some of my peers have never left
the state. What made me more deserving of the privileges I have received compared to me equally as

Until I can figure out a way to spread information about private schools with extremely generosity to
other high achieving and low income students, I will stay awake each night. Until I aid in creating
better boarding school outreach programs for underrepresented and/or low income students, I will stay
awake each night. Until I discover how to transform the privilege of a first class education into a right
for all students, regardless of their socioeconomic status or race, I will stay awake.
The injustices surrounding education and the access to opportunities I have been given prevent me
from falling asleep with ease most nights. But not resting is nothing compared to the consequences of
failing to provide thousands of children the high quality education they deserve. So, until the
multifaceted question of How did I get here? is answered and properly addressed, I will not

Female Infanticide and Foeticide Essay
Female Infanticide and Foeticide
It is regrettable that female infanticide and foeticide are rapidly decreasing the female population
throughout India. The main factors that is responsible for the increase in the incidence of female
infanticide and foeticide is the low status of women, son preference, and the practice of dowry across
all casts groups.
The low status of women and girls is due to cultural beliefs and the material cost they represent to
their families. Vanaja Dhruvarajan says that there is a belief regarding the nature of men and women:
Men are ritually pure, physically strong, and emotionally mature; women, on the other hand, are
ritually pollutable, physically weak, and lack strong willpower (30). Because of these ... Show more

Overall, girls get poorer education than boys, and become less aware of the world around them.
Therefore, they become dependent on men, whether it is the father, the husband or the son.
The preference for male children is due to three major reasons. One is the economic value of having
sons. Sons are more likely than daughters to provide family labour on the farm or in a family business,
earn wages, and support their parents during old age. Upon marriage, a son brings a daughter in law
into his family, and she provides additional help around the house as well as she brings riches in the
form of dowry payments. Another important advantage of having sons is their social cultural utility. In
India patriarchal family system, having one son is essential for the continuation of the family line, and
many sons provide high status to the family. Vanaja Dhruvarajan says, When a women becomes a
mother, especially the mother of a son, her status goes up in her new home for having helped
perpetuate the family (87) Finally, the utility of having sons comes from the important religious
functions that only sons can provide. In Hindu tradition, sons are needed to do the funeral of their
deceased parents and to help in the salvation of their souls.
Daughters are considered to be an economic problem to her parents mainly because of the heavy
dowry payment demanded by the groom s family, as well as the high cost of the wedding,

To Kill A Mockingbird Hypocrisy Analysis
José Emilio Pacheco says We are all hypocrites. We cannot see ourselves or judge ourselves the way
we see and judge others. Hypocrisy is demonstrated and observed on an everyday basis in our society,
and even in the rural town of Maycomb in the 1930s it is evident as well. In To Kill a Mockingbird,
two children by the names of Scout and Jem start to see hypocrisy more and more frequently because
of the events that happen to unfold. This includes , including an african american young man accused
of something he did not do. This amazing novel by Harper Lee shows that hypocrisy is closely linked
to privilege, and a dominating opinion about others. The characters Miss Gates and Mrs. Merriweather
are great examples of hypocrisy and Atticus is a great counterexample, showing an effort of being
larger than others in Maycomb. Miss Gates demonstrates hypocrisy in the novel. It is shown when she
is speaking to Scout s class. She is teaching about Hitler, speaking about how he does not treat
everybody equally. She expresses her beliefs against prejudice and the persecution of those who aren t
like her. This is hypocritical because she does not treat everybody equally in her own town, and yet
she is teaching the opposite of her actions. Miss Gates says, Over here we don t believe in persecuting
anybody. Persecution comes from people who are prejudice. (Lee 281) This shows what Miss Gates is
teaching to her students and it makes Scout confused because she knows that Miss Gates is

Thief Of Bagdad Analysis
The Thief of Bagdad was directed by non AAPI filmmakers Ludwig Berger, Michael Powell
and Tim Whelan. Given this information, I can see how someone as a director would want to
glamorize a culture in order to make it more visually appealing to audiences despite it being
culturally inaccurate. At the time, Asians were still very much underrepresented in film and many
roles would be lost to Caucasian actors so as to resonate with American audiences. I think it is
fair to argue that had this film been handled by someone who shared the culture, certain
directions would have been taken so as to give the film a more accurate portrayal. Directions such as
casting more ethnically fit actors or more accurate historic costuming. Despite ... Show more content

Despite his
garnered success as a leading actor, many of his roles subjected him to infantilization,
race bending, and exoticism. Due to the lack of actors of color in Hollywood at the time, Sabu
would be often be typecast into the exotic and feral Jungle boy role.
In the Thief of Bagdad we see Sabu show off his acting chops as a leading actor representing
the South Asian community, despite him playing an Arab. The Thief of Bagdad has its flaws
with regard to race bending, however at its release the scenery and acting were heavily
praised by audiences and critics. The idea of trying to exoticize a culture is often played in
Hollywood in order to add some level of aesthetic. In Sabu s case, I would like to argue that that
is probably what made him so popular early in his career. The actor starred in many early British
productions when India was still a British Colony. Much of India s goods such as spices
and silks were controlled for the sake of British Imperialism. Sabu himself was exoticized to
audiences for his ethnic background. Many audiences in that period had little notion of what was
an accurate representation of a South Asian person. The Thief of Bagdad plays into this trope
as well. Sabu stars as a leading character, yet at the same time it almost feels as if he were cast
in this role due to his exotic background.
The film Piccadilly

  • 2. Essay about The American Dream Facade If the American Dream had to be captured within a frozen image, how would the visualization be conveyed? For the majority of today s society, the image would likely include the traditional father, mother, and child(ren) standing pleasantly beside a moderate two story home, a well kept lawn, and neatly trimmed hedges. In the background of this family portrait, a guarded and welcoming neighborhood would appear, complete with similar home designs and family arrangements lining its streets. In other words, the image of the American Dream resides within the typical American suburb. And within this typical suburb lies (supposedly) the remaining components of the ideal American lifestyle. From the moment William Levitt created the first ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Largely a result of the lifestyles portrayed on suburban based television shows, the suburbs have consistently been deemed the ideal environment for the ideal family of high moral standards From the initial episodes of Leave it to Beaver in the 1950 s to the modernized episodes of Home Improvement in the 1990 s, suburban TV sitcoms have bombarded America with images of hard working and devoted mother/father pairs who guide their essentially normal children through the obstacles of childhood and adolescence. As the television critic Michael V. Tueth revealed in a recent publication of the Journal of Popular Film and Television, these television shows allowed suburbia to evolve into the home of parental wisdom and spousal forgiveness as well as children s fantasies and nonsense (98). Surprisingly, because America s actual suburban children record and obtain overall success through adulthood, these television lifestyles did not seem too far fetched. Unfortunately, through recent years, this affirmed connection between the suburbs and the perfect family environment has become more of an intended assumption rather than a reality. While today s society places great significance on acquiring the appearance of the traditional America family, it places little, if any, importance on actually filling its shoes. Cartographers use maps in order to display human geography and all of the characteristics behind it. Many people rely on maps on a day to day basis. These visual aids are used for reference tools, communication tools, and data. Cartographers are precise with the information displayed in order to refer/communicate data accurately. A thematic map is a map that communicates this data. Thematic maps can be broken down into subparts: dot distribution, proportional symbol, isoline, cartogram, and choropleth. After reading Wide Sargasso Sea we have a better understanding of Jane Eyre and some of the events that took place within the novel. We find more out about Rochester s dark past; Bronte just didn t go far enough back to enlighten us on his marriage. After reading Rhys s Wide Sargasso Sea we now know how Rochester and Antoinette s relationship came to be. Their marriage was arranged so that Rochester would have financial stability because he was the second son and was likely to not inherit anything from his father. Rochester felt he was duped into marrying Antoinette by his father and everyone else. In one scene Rochester says, As I walked I remembered my father s face and his thin lips, my brother s round conceited eyes. They knew. And Richard the fool, he knew too...They all knew. (Rhys 62). Rochester seems to be ashamed with himself over locking Antoinette in the attic, but he feels like it was the right thing for him to do. • 9. Ethics Of Fair Play And Ethics In Soccer Fair Play and Ethics in Soccer Soccer is the biggest sport in the world, boasting a fan base of over four billion people worldwide. It is without a doubt a very loved sport, but that doesn t mean that the sport holds a perfect record of being clean and not being disliked. Fernando Torres goes down inside the box in the 89th minute, but the question is whether the ref has given a penalty (Martin Tyler Chelsea vs Liverpool). Flopping is one of the biggest debates on this concept, because if not identified it goes against fair play rules and moral standards. In the case above a penalty was awarded in the ending minutes of a match to declare one team the winner over the opposing side. This would not have been a problem if an actual foul was committed in the box, but when looking back at the footage you can see that the player obviously flopped upon contact and no call should have been given at that time. FIFA, the leading soccer association, stands highly to support the enforcement of fair play and ethics in soccer, but there is only so much they can do and so much that has been done. Due to this dilemma, soccer as a sport receives a lot of heat on this and has been trying to cut down on unruly incidents that go against ethics and fair play. • 12. The Life Of Sarah And Hagar, Or Jezebel And Rahab Today How does one read the story of Sarah and Hagar, or Jezebel and Rahab today, if one is a woman reader situated in a postcolonial society? This question animates Judith E. McKinlay s Reframing Her: Biblical Women in Postcolonial Focus. In this text, McKinlay takes different biblical women s narrative and gives them agency. McKinaly opens this text from both with a feminist hermeneutic and a postcolonial criticism that helps to shape the context and location for the women she will explore and also her own personal context. One of the things I most appreciated about the opening us this book is the location in which she situates herself. She is a New Zealander, a Pakeha, which is described by the people of Maori, for people who are not Maori. Her narrative becomes critical in how she shapes these biblical women who are considered outsiders from those within. Location and identity politics becomes a critical theme within this text. I can remember Historian Vincent Harding who would open his class asking everyone to identify who they were and where they were from. At the time, I never understood why that was necessarily, but as a historian, I understand to know who we are and where we are from shapes our context. This text was helpful in helping me to understand how to relate to different people with different biblical understandings. As a result of all the organic minerals in the volcano s caldera, it is now covered with trees and plants. Mount Vesuvius has erupted about three dozen times since 79 A.D. It s most recent eruption was on the year of 1944. But it wasn t as powerful as the 79 A.D. eruption, which by the way is the most famous and well known. The eruption buried three nearby towns, one of which was Pompeii. It was buried under 18 feet (5.5 m) of rubble, ash and pumice. In A.D. 79, the Roman naturalist and historian Pliny the Younger, just 18 years old at the time, wrote letters about the event. According to the book Volcanoes of the World: Mount Vesuvius, He wrote that it was like a storm of stones. He was the first person in history ever to record information about volcanoes. As a result of this, scientists now call eruptions of the most dangerous kind, like this one, plinian. The Cultural Heritage Of Syria I intend to concentrate on the cultural heritage of Syria throughout the duration of this report, however the the massive losses in life and property incurred over the course of the now five year long Civil War in Syria is a major factor in the discussion in regards to what remains, and what has been destroyed, among Syria s tangible cultural heritage in the form of monuments, historical architecture, and various other pieces of art1. The tangible heritage that remains in the region effected by the Syrian Civil War is testament to thousands of years of culture, history and civilization, which must be protected and efforts must be put forth in its preservation. However, this heritage was built by the ancestors of those who have gone, and is a symbol of past peoples. Those who remain however, are suffering from the onslaughts of both terrorist groups one one hand, and are the victims of conflict between the Free Syrian Army and the forces of President Bashar Al Asad2. We Propose A Novel Framework For Tweet Segmentation Abstract Twitter has become one of the most important communication channels with its ability providing the most up to date and newsworthy information. A huge amount of tweets sent per day by hundred millions of users, information overload is inevitable. For extracting information in large volume of tweets, Named Entity Recognition (NER), methods on formal texts. However, many applications in Information Retrieval (IR) and Natural Language Processing (NLP) suffer severely from the noisy and short nature of tweets. In this paper, we propose a novel framework for tweet segmentation in a batch mode, called HybridSeg by splitting tweets into meaningful segments, the semantic or context information is well preserved and easily extracted by the downstream applications. HybridSeg finds the optimal segmentation of a tweet by maximizing the sum of the stickiness scores of its candidate segments. The stickiness score considers the probability of a segment being a phrase in English (i.e., global context) and the probability of a segment being a phrase within the batch of tweets (i.e., local context). For the latter, we propose and evaluate two models to derive local context by considering the linguistic features and term dependency in a batch of tweets, respectively. HybridSeg is also designed to iteratively learn from confident segments as pseudo ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Emil Sinclair, the story s protagonist, experiences various adjustments, which in time influence his values and identity. As the story develops, Sinclair acquaints himself to Max Demian, an intellectual being, who further encourages him to acknowledge the human s definite capabilities. Through his interpretation of Cain, Demian impacts the way in which Sinclair views the world. His understanding of the story contradicts the standard Christian narrative. Seeing as his principal conflict revolves around the distinction of the good and the bad, Sinclair continuously suppresses his feelings towards the controversial aspect of things. Through this, one becomes aware of the depicted duality of Cain and Abel. Furthermore, Sinclair progressively becomes intrigued with the world s divergence which is contradictory to Christianity and its values. The incorporation of Cain and Abel is quite controversial, in terms of society and its standards. All in all, Hesse impeccably interprets Cain s mark by bringing awareness to the characters possessing alternate mindsets. This essay serves to address the interpretation of Cain s mark, as Hesse demonstrates its existence through distinguishing individuals, and its effect on society. These pathways can be effectively trained by the use of mental techniques such as imagery and simulation. Imagery is the process by which you can create, modify or strengthen pathways important to the co ordination of your muscles, by training purely within your mind. Imagery rests on the important principle that you can exercise these parts of you brain with imputes from our imagination rather than from your sences: the parts of the brain that you train with imagery experience imagined and real inputs similarly, with the real inputs being merely more vividly experienced (Rainer 1987). Simulation is similar to imagery in that it seeks to improve the quality of training by teaching your brain to cope with circumstances that would not be otherwise met until an important competition was reached. Simulation, however, is carried out by making your physical training circumstances as similar as possible to the quot;real thing quot; for example by bringing in crowds of spectators, by having performances judged, or by inviting press to a training session (Rainer 1987). Deciding your Commitment to your sport is possibly the most important quot;Sports Psychology quot; decision you will make. Even though two of the writers of Legalism were students of Xinzu, a philosopher of Confucianism, there are more of differences than similarities between the two. Because of this, legalism, which preceded the concept of Confucianism, had a lot of reasons why Confucianism was considered wrong. While towards the fall of the Qin Dynasty, Confucian beliefs started to revamp and become more widely accepted and thus they were blended together to some extent, this was not the case beforehand, in fact it could be argued that blending the two together seemed almost impossible. Confucianism stressed the ideas of the knowledge, humaneness, and filial piety while legalism stressed power, rewards and punishments, and agricultural wealth. Thus from a legalist standpoint, Confucianism was considered wrong because it placed value on virtues instead of the laws, focusing on education to prosper growth and moral character instead of simply obeying societal laws and valuing agricultural wealth rather than humaneness Thus differences far exceed similarities between these two ancient beliefs. However, both have made everlasting marks on Chinese culture and tradition that to this day still exists. Welfare Reform For Drug Test Recipients Essay Pretend you are in kindergarten again and you have just won your favorite bag of candy for behaving yourself in class all week, and right when the teacher presents you with your glorious prize a fellow classmate, which had already been to the principals twice that week, comes up and asks for a piece. You do not want to give him a piece because you worked hard for it and he broke the rules so he does not deserve it, but then he goes to complain to the teacher and she says you have to share with him. Would you be upset if you worked hard to obey the rules to win a bag of candy, and then you find out that you could have gotten a piece anyways? This is exactly how many taxpayers feel about welfare recipients that refuse to take drug test prior to receiving their welfare checks. Since 1996 there has been a call for welfare reform to drug test recipients prior to admission, but any attempts have been unsuccessful because they are viewed as a violation of the fourth amendment, more harmful for children, and an unnecessary expense. These common fallacies have been the main arguments leading the anti drug testing campaign, but in the past few years many taxpayers have grown increasingly tired of their money being given to undeserving individuals, although there has not been a clear solution to please all parties. In the history of liquors it holds a special place for being one of the most controversial drinks of French history. Yet it wasn t always that way, for a period in the late 1800 s absinthe was one of the most popular liquors in the western world. Some companies at the height of its popularity produced over 30,000 liters of it a day. American Chemist T. A. Breaux has spent years researching the drink; through his research he has found that the drink originated as a medicine developed as a digestive aide in the late 1700 s (pg.2 3). The drink then rose in popularity after the 1840 s when the French government would dispense rations of the drink to its soldiers fighting in foreign campaigns as a means of purifying unclean water. These soldiers developed a taste for the drink claiming it to be the drink of a true man, due to its strong bitter taste (pg. 4 5). By the late 1870 s it became the most coveted drink, especially among artist and intellectuals who would feature the iconic drink in their works. In that book, Socrates converses with a number of his friends concerning the question, What is justice? The debate starts with conversations between Socrates and Cephalus, Polemarchus, Cleitophon, and finally Thrasymachus. The initial theory put forward, was that justice was always speaking truthfully and repaying debts. Through many phases and discussions, Socrates takes the crowd from that definition, and finally agrees that justice is virtue and wisdom and that injustice is vice and ignorance. (350d). From there, Socrates goes back to a prior theme that injustice is stronger and more powerful than justice. Socrates points out to Thrasymachus, that if justice is wise then injustice cannot be more powerful. Socrates did not think that the just man would always suffer and in fact felt that even unjust men were just in their treatment of each other. Cultures institute behaviors that are to be seen as the societal norms, which work to constantly reinforce societal expectations of how genders should act in relation to one another. Although some may argue that one s sexuality is an innate characteristic resulting from genetic makeup, there is a large amount of evidence pointing to its social construction instead. Wilton refers to Monique Wittig, a French author and feminist theorist, who states our survival demands that we contribute all our strength to the destruction of the class of women within which men appropriate women. Thus, Wittig expresses that heterosexuality is a social system (Wilton 165). Why heterosexuality is forced upon the majority, however, is still unclear. An Ideological Level, James Sets Up Two Systems Essay On an ideological level, James sets up two systems: the modern sexual emancipator represented in Olive, and the radical conservative represented in Basil. Basil considers that Olive s views about women s liberation are inanities she is not sure of their meanings: the inanities she uttered ─ the rights and wrongs of women, the equality of the sexes, the hysterics of conventions, the further stultification of the suffrage, the prospect of conscript mothers in the national Senate. Thus rebound exercises are more specific to the sprinting and jumping movements in football. These exercises should be done in 3 5 sets of 8 repetitions for each leg, with at least one minute s rest between sets. The quality and speed of the movement is the priority. The other training element that is required for improving sprinting speed is sprinting itself. This should be done with maximum efforts over 30 60m. Remember, with this kind of training the aim is to develop the maximum speed; endurance should not become a factor. Similarities Between The House And A Doll House Mi esha Straughn Dr. Willis 5 December 2017 ENG 102 Mini Term The Relation of Societal Problems in A Dollhouse and The Bear, A Joke in One Act The social normalities that are prevalent in modern society have made substantial changes over time. What one may think is proper and acceptable in a society may be completely different to someone else. Many things have caused this societal difference. Particularly, the use of literary works to show different societies in related time periods has constantly shaped thoughts over this controversial topic. From poems, to short stories, to even plays, the use of literary works to show societal issues has become increasingly normalized. The Bear, A Joke in One Act is a one act play written by Anton Chekhov that explores many societal issues, as well as A Dollhouse written by Henry Ibsen. The authors choice of literary elements, and the portrayal of contentment versus happiness, helps to shape both plays and abets each ending with a mutual theme that becomes evident to the audience. The subject matter reviewed in both plays show similarities and differences that unify to relate back to the overall theme of societal problems in comparable eras. Anton Chekhov, the most prominent Russian dramatist of his time, wrote plays about the humdrum life of inconspicuous, sensitive people, whose lives fall prey to the hollowness and tedium of a disintegrating social order (Augustyn). His intellectual work in The Bear, A Joke in One Act refelects this statement greatly. This play was one of Chekhov s most successful plays in his lifetime and sought him great fame and fortune (Tanitch). The Bear, A Joke in One Act , showed realistic themes and situations relatable to the era. Some viewed Chekhov to have a poor and jilted view of women (Tanitch). He chose to write about women from various perspectives. In this play, Chekhov highlights a very emotional woman who lets all her energy, happiness, and awareness die with her husband. • 43. Why I Want To Attend Boarding School How did I get here? A question that finds its way to the front of my thoughts on almost nightly basis since I began high school at Phillips Academy. I ponder how my low income, black, public school educated and sarcastic being was capable of manipulating its way through lengthy admissions forms, holistic selection committees, and wine up at one of the best high schools in the nation. How? My braids sink into my pillow each night as this thought crosses my mind. This question is never from a place of regret for attending boarding school, but a consideration of all of the students who come from similar backgrounds as I do and why I was the one who made it out. Why is it that I dissected my on shark in biology class while my friends at home shared the same seven year old textbooks. How come I have opportunities to travel to different countries while my some of my peers have never left the state. What made me more deserving of the privileges I have received compared to me equally as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Until I can figure out a way to spread information about private schools with extremely generosity to other high achieving and low income students, I will stay awake each night. Until I aid in creating better boarding school outreach programs for underrepresented and/or low income students, I will stay awake each night. Until I discover how to transform the privilege of a first class education into a right for all students, regardless of their socioeconomic status or race, I will stay awake. The injustices surrounding education and the access to opportunities I have been given prevent me from falling asleep with ease most nights. But not resting is nothing compared to the consequences of failing to provide thousands of children the high quality education they deserve. So, until the multifaceted question of How did I get here? is answered and properly addressed, I will not ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 44. Female Infanticide and Foeticide Essay Female Infanticide and Foeticide It is regrettable that female infanticide and foeticide are rapidly decreasing the female population throughout India. The main factors that is responsible for the increase in the incidence of female infanticide and foeticide is the low status of women, son preference, and the practice of dowry across all casts groups. The low status of women and girls is due to cultural beliefs and the material cost they represent to their families. Vanaja Dhruvarajan says that there is a belief regarding the nature of men and women: Men are ritually pure, physically strong, and emotionally mature; women, on the other hand, are ritually pollutable, physically weak, and lack strong willpower (30). Because of these ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Overall, girls get poorer education than boys, and become less aware of the world around them. Therefore, they become dependent on men, whether it is the father, the husband or the son. The preference for male children is due to three major reasons. One is the economic value of having sons. Sons are more likely than daughters to provide family labour on the farm or in a family business, earn wages, and support their parents during old age. Upon marriage, a son brings a daughter in law into his family, and she provides additional help around the house as well as she brings riches in the form of dowry payments. Another important advantage of having sons is their social cultural utility. In India patriarchal family system, having one son is essential for the continuation of the family line, and many sons provide high status to the family. Vanaja Dhruvarajan says, When a women becomes a mother, especially the mother of a son, her status goes up in her new home for having helped perpetuate the family (87) Finally, the utility of having sons comes from the important religious functions that only sons can provide. In Hindu tradition, sons are needed to do the funeral of their deceased parents and to help in the salvation of their souls. Daughters are considered to be an economic problem to her parents mainly because of the heavy dowry payment demanded by the groom s family, as well as the high cost of the wedding, ... • 45. To Kill A Mockingbird Hypocrisy Analysis José Emilio Pacheco says We are all hypocrites. We cannot see ourselves or judge ourselves the way we see and judge others. Hypocrisy is demonstrated and observed on an everyday basis in our society, and even in the rural town of Maycomb in the 1930s it is evident as well. In To Kill a Mockingbird, two children by the names of Scout and Jem start to see hypocrisy more and more frequently because of the events that happen to unfold. This includes , including an african american young man accused of something he did not do. This amazing novel by Harper Lee shows that hypocrisy is closely linked to privilege, and a dominating opinion about others. The characters Miss Gates and Mrs. Merriweather are great examples of hypocrisy and Atticus is a great counterexample, showing an effort of being larger than others in Maycomb. Miss Gates demonstrates hypocrisy in the novel. It is shown when she is speaking to Scout s class. She is teaching about Hitler, speaking about how he does not treat everybody equally. She expresses her beliefs against prejudice and the persecution of those who aren t like her. This is hypocritical because she does not treat everybody equally in her own town, and yet she is teaching the opposite of her actions. Miss Gates says, Over here we don t believe in persecuting anybody. Persecution comes from people who are prejudice. (Lee 281) This shows what Miss Gates is teaching to her students and it makes Scout confused because she knows that Miss Gates is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 46. Thief Of Bagdad Analysis The Thief of Bagdad was directed by non AAPI filmmakers Ludwig Berger, Michael Powell and Tim Whelan. Given this information, I can see how someone as a director would want to glamorize a culture in order to make it more visually appealing to audiences despite it being culturally inaccurate. At the time, Asians were still very much underrepresented in film and many roles would be lost to Caucasian actors so as to resonate with American audiences. I think it is fair to argue that had this film been handled by someone who shared the culture, certain directions would have been taken so as to give the film a more accurate portrayal. Directions such as casting more ethnically fit actors or more accurate historic costuming. Despite ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Despite his garnered success as a leading actor, many of his roles subjected him to infantilization, race bending, and exoticism. Due to the lack of actors of color in Hollywood at the time, Sabu would be often be typecast into the exotic and feral Jungle boy role. In the Thief of Bagdad we see Sabu show off his acting chops as a leading actor representing the South Asian community, despite him playing an Arab. The Thief of Bagdad has its flaws with regard to race bending, however at its release the scenery and acting were heavily praised by audiences and critics. The idea of trying to exoticize a culture is often played in Hollywood in order to add some level of aesthetic. In Sabu s case, I would like to argue that that is probably what made him so popular early in his career. The actor starred in many early British productions when India was still a British Colony. Much of India s goods such as spices and silks were controlled for the sake of British Imperialism. Sabu himself was exoticized to

The Thief of Bagdad plays into this trope as well. Sabu stars as a leading character, yet at the same time it almost feels as if he were cast in this role due to his exotic background.
