Evolution Of Surgeons
Medical innovation led to surgery and the profession it has become. Surgical procedures have taken
place since the 18th century ( Surgeons 597). Among these were limb amputations and tumor
resections. Because anesthetic was not developed until the 19th century, patients were either tied to
a table, drank large amounts of alcohol and took opium to mask the immense pain ( Surgeons 597).
During the year of 1846 surgerywas modernized ( Surgeons 597). With anesthesia, the number of
surgical opportunities increased rapidly. In 1867, Joseph Lister developed antiseptic after gaining
knowledge from Louis Pasteur s studies on bacteria ( Surgeons 597). By the 20th century, the
profession had to split into specialties because of its growth ( Surgeons 597). The American Board
of Medical Specialists was also created during this time to certify up and coming surgeons after
their residency ( Surgeons 597). The end of the century brought advancements with imaging such as
X ray and the invention of surgical procedures performed with lasers ( Surgeons 597).... Show more

come with being a surgeon. They include reviewing and analyzing medical histories, preparing
patients for their surgeries, prescribing medications, and gathering results from a variety of tests

to prevent the spread of harmful bacteria. It is the surgeon s responsibility to make sure that the
operating room is sterile because infection can affect the recovery of a patient. Surgeons are

My Learner s Academic Development On Their Past Work And...
I am basing my descriptions of my Average Learner s academic development on their past work
and observations. They can read and understand simple texts. In fact, the history textbook for
this class is within their reading level and so they can read and understood information therein.
In addition, they can listen and follow verbal instructions. For them, I do not have to repeat nor
display my instruction on the whiteboard nor through PowerPoint slides, but I do sometimes
have to speak slower to assure they can hear what I say. They can write simple and complex
sentences, with a high degree of clarity. (I will provide further information about this when I
describe their language development later in this paper). Collectively, they can collaborate in
groups, preferably of no more than three students in a group, because anything more is not
conducive to learning. The reason they work well together because most know each other from
being in the same classes last year and the on the same sport team this class has many baseball
players. Insofar, this has proven to be advantageous, by having them in groups, and I could not be
more satisfied with the results.
However, they are not perfect students. They have gaps in their speculative developments. One of
them is, comprehending primary sources. They are still learning to comprehend primary document
texts. For example, in the past, I had tried using length, a page long or more, and unedited primary
documents. I had used George

Informative Essay About Swimming
Stop, right now, think of the last time you went swimming, think of how many times you ve gone
swimming, how high is that number? It s engraved into our lives, not only is it a fun way to relax,
but swimming is a survival skill needed for many species to use in their lives. Swimming is part of
nature, almost every living species has a natural instinct of how to swim right from birth, but
humans don t, why do you think that is? Over the years, swimmingfrom a competition stand point
has advanced and changed along with technology. My goal is to learn about: the regulations of
competition swimming (rules and strokes), the technological advances that are pushing athletes to
go beyond old records, and what is happening with swimming in your neighborhood.
Now, have you ever noticed that countless records are being broken and broken again? Some have
called into question the technological advances and if they are helping or hurting our sports. A few

Louisiana Territory Case Study
I have decided to write this letter to you to help with the decision of buying the Louisiana
Territory. I have very high views on the great piece of land. I hope that after reading this letter
that you will decide to buy this land. First, look at the grand size of our nation if we were to
purchase this territory. It would nearly double adding an amazing amount of land for people who
would want to expand their families and settle in the West. Therefore it would be less crowded
near the original states, and plenty of room for the Native Americans who have lived there before
us and know this land better than we do. With all the new land there will be an ample amount of
resources to collect. With all of this land that we would be getting, we would

Essay on Small Business
Small Business 2
In accessing the Equal Employment Opportunity Office (EEOC) website, I found it very hard to
find a clear and concise reason as to why small businesses were treated differently than the larger
businesses and why the law would differentiate between them. These smaller organizations are
sometimes treated differently by the EEOC because they lack the resources that most large
companies possess. Most small businesses can t afford to hire the best qualified people that
larger businesses can and do. They may not be able to hire people that fit into the different classes
(EEOC, 2008). For example, they may want to hire someone with a disabili ty but really can t
afford to because they would have to make ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

different laws that are enforced by EEOC for small businesses one of which is the Title VII of
the Civil Rights of 1964. This law makes it illegal to discriminate against any person based on
race, color, religion, national origin, or sex. This law also makes it unlawful to retaliate against a
person because the person complained about discrimination or filed a charged of discrimination
(Laws Enforced by EEOC).
Equal Pay Act of 1963 law is equally important to small businesses. This law makes it unlawful to
pay different salaries to men and women when they both are performing the exact same job. The
Equal Pay Act does not exclude all disparities in wage rates paid men and women but only those
disparities based only on gender (Twomey, D, and Jennings, M.M., 2011, p. 848).
Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967, this law also enforced by the EEOC is intended
to protect individuals who are 40 years or older from discrimination because of age. It covers all
private employers with 20 or more employees (small business) (Anderson, R.A., Fox,
1., Twomey, D.P., and Jennings, M.M., 1993).

Television Genre And Style Of Mockumentaries Essay
Within the realm of television today, many of the more popular comedies have a very specific
style of production and way of capturing scenes. This style is often referred to as the
Mockumentary style and can be seen within examples like The Office and Park and Recreation.
The popularity of these shows alone have inspired many other different spin offs and takes on this
specific style of comedy, but these shows shouldn t be credited as the founders of the
mockumentary style. In fact, for televisionshows the mockumentary s history goes farther back by
a couple of decades. This paper will attempt to discover the answers to three main questions
regarding the television genre and style of mockumentaries. Firstly, the definition of a
mockumentary and a general understanding of the stylistic similarities must be examined before
the history of the mockumentary is to be explored. Next, the historical background will be
considered as well as the cultural significance and impact of the shows that emulated this
mockumentary style. Lastly, the paper will look to the current cultural contexts and the social
impacts of the popular, modern day televisions shows that incorporate these styles. Through the
analysis of the mockumentary style in the combination of the historical lens and the definitional
lens, modern day shows that utilize this subgenre will be better understood as well as their impacts
on society itself.
According to Oxford Dictionary, a mockumentary can simply be

The Philadelphia Chromosome Report
The book The Philadelphia Chromosome by Jessica Wapner follows the story of how a fatal
disease called Chronic Myeloid Leukemia became one of the first targets of kinase inhibitors for
targeted cancer therapies. Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML) affects only a small number of
people (an estimated 8,500 diagnoses this year), but was until recently considered a fatal disease.
Gleevec, a drug created by Novartis (mostly) that targeted the BCR/ABL protein in CML patients.
This protein causes a tyrosine kinase to uncontrollably phosphorylate myeloid cells in bone marrow.
The BCR/ABL protein is caused by a gene mutation known as The Philadelphia Chromosome,
which is an abnormality in chromosome 22. This abnormality is caused by a gene translocation...

His goal is to find out how this gene leads to CML in patients, and hopefully, find a way to stop
it. The bcr/abl protein constantly tells cells, specially myeloid cells, that it is time to divide,
causing uncontrollable replication, and these cells have a mutation in them, they don t die like
normal cells do, causing the body to overflow with these useless cancer cells. Researches at Ciba
Giegy began working on a way to inhibit the bcr/abl tyrosine kinases from signaling to cells.
This work resulted in a compound known as STI 571, which was a targeted kinase inhibitor.
One of the fears this team faced was, if you inhibit a kinase, do you inhibit them all? Causing the
patient to die, or can you manage to only inhibit a single type of kinase, leaving the rest alone to
do their jobs. By 1996, Gleevec (STI 571) was shown to kill cancer cells, while leaving normal cells
healthy. In 1998, Ciba Giegy (now Novartis) was ready to start phase 1 clinical trials in patients.
By 2001, the FDA approved the drug for used in the treatment of

The book details the rise of Blackwater and the growth of security contracting, especially the role it
has played in the Iraq war and the War on Terrorism, which Scahill tries to expose the conduct of
Blackwater. With the introduction of the Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the United States
government increased its support on using contractors to assist the military. While other PMCs are
used by the government, Blackwater was the company that benefited the most, which has now
secured $1 billion dollars in diplomatic security contracts from the government.
In the book, Scahill argues that the company s rise is a consequence of the demobilization of the
US military following the Cold War and its overextension in Iraq and Afghanistan. He continues by
saying how Blackwater serves in Iraq and Afghanistan, protecting top authority figures and enjoying
immunity from the constraints and regulations on traditional armies. Scahill argues that Blackwater
s leadership was motivated by a right wing Republican ideology, and that its founder, Erik Prince,
has provided significant assistance in that setting. Scahill makes several key arguments in his book.
He argues that Blackwater s employees should face criminal charges for a variety of incidents

Text Messaging Changing Teens Literacy
For generations, several forms of digital communication have been developing among the human
population. E mailing, social networking, and video face calling have been major impacts of
communication and have been revolutionized across the globe, but text messaging has been the
leading form of human communication among the population, specifically the teenage population.
Adolescent teenagers have been able to use text messaging by interacting much faster with their
friends, including some that are long distant away from them. This has also lead teenagers to
interact using fewer words and more jumbles of letters that suppose to mean something, such as

An Apology To My Prey
Commentary An Apology to my Prey by Joyce Sidman. The purpose of this poem is to help us
understand what people mean when they talk. Body Paragraphs The Author uses sarcastic
language to help us understand what the poem means. For example: when he said Let me offer
an apology, too, for my talons impossibly long and curved... why would you show off while you
apologise, you should feel regretful. In addition to that: when he said, I am sorry. For you, that
is. All this works out quite well for me . You would not be biased when you apologise, only when
you are sarcastic. It is a good way to use expressive language and attract the reader. The author, in
this poem, uses figurative language to grab a reader s interest and curiosity:

How Different Temperatures Effect The Cell Membrane Of A...
How different temperatures effect the cell membrane of a beetroot
Hypothesis: The more betalain is leaked when the membrane is in higher temperatures
Abstract:
The experiment which was conducted was to identify the effects of temperature of the beetroot
discs. Majority of the pigment from the beetroot is found within the vacuole which is called
anthocyanin and each of the vacuole is surrounded by a tonoplast membrane. Externally the
cytoplasm is surrounded by the plasma membrane hence the foundation of the experiment
depends on the temperature which will rapture the membrane and lead to a leakage of the
pigment. The experiment consists of several different temperatures and same sized beetroot
discs, the beetroot discs will be placed in 3 sets of discs in a tube test tube which will be placed
in the distilled water in same test tube. Using a colorimeter once the beetroot have been exposed to
the temperatures the colour of the distilled water will change therefore leaving a coloured water to
be measured by a colorimeter, this is because the colorimeter measures the light being passed
through the solution.
Introduction:
The experiment is conducted to find out how the membrane is affected by different temperatures.
Betalain pigment increases with high temperatures because most mammalian proteins denature and
tertiary structure unravels because the strong covalent bonds between the R groups of amino acids
in the polypeptide chains are destroyed at temperatures over 45В°C.

Military Warfare During The Revolutionary War Essay
In every major military operation, terrain, troops, and weapons often dictate the way the war is
fought. The American Revolutionary War was a prime example of this military policy. It has been
said that the Patriots use of guerrilla warfare was the reason why the Americans were successful in
defeating the British. However, the Americans employed various tactics both on and off the
battlefield that led to the ultimate defeat of the British. Though guerrilla warfare was an important
facet of the Patriots military strategy against the British, the Americans ultimately won the
Revolutionary War through an amalgamation of guerrilla warfare, linear battle tactics, and
psychological warfare. There is no doubt that guerrilla warfare played a significant part in the
American victory over the British during the Revolutionary War. This type of warfare was used by
the militia and was taken from their numerous skirmishes with Native Americans. The Natives
would use smaller bands of fighters to attack, with swift surprise, against the colonists and would
push them into Native territory where the Natives would have the advantage. A basic premise of
guerrilla warfare is to know one s terrain. Considering the battles were being fought on American
soil, the militia would utilize the landscape and terrain to their advantage, much like how the
Natives used the land to their advantage against the Colonists during the French and Indian War.
The militia knew the land and terrain whereas

The Pros And Cons Of Online Shopping
These past couple years there has been a decline on in store sales throughout the year especially
around the holiday seasons. The main reason for this is the new trend of online shopping. Online
shopping has started to become one of the main ways for many people to shop because of how
convenient it is, you can sit at your computer at home and order what you would get at the store.
The origin of online shoppingstarted from an English professor named Michael Aldrich in 1979
when he made a new system that made online purchases capable and safe (Duncan, E). The trendof
online shoppingis beneficial to society because it makes shopping very convenient and easy. With
the technology at the hands of the people today there are many things that are now capable. One
of the main new things is online shopping. Online shopping has become one of the more
convenient things for people to do because it is so easy and that is one of the driving forces that is
making online shopping a huge trend. As of February 2017 about thirty one percent of people
prefer to online shop (Statistics and Trends n.d.). That number has been consistently growing
throughout the past 6 years because with the technology era that we live in today online shopping
is starting to just become the norm and how you are supposed to shop. The online shopping mogul
Amazon has become one of the highest net worth companies because they are consistently shipping

Employee Performance Reviews Essay
Performance reviews are designed to both evaluate general performance and measure progress
around specific goals. Both negative and positive aspects are incorporated in these reviews as
they should serve as a point of reference to both look back in evaluation and ahead in anticipation.
Pulling back from daily demands in order to assess and reviewemployee performance allows
managers to focus their attention on specific departments and clarify what is high priority to their

As it may not seem like a conscious choice, any time an employee offers an excuse for a poor
performance, he or she is trying to clear themselves of any responsibility. This can create tension
between the employee and the manager as the executive s focus tends to be not on the excuse
itself, but on the issue of responsibility. Along with excuses, silence acts in a negative manner for
many reasons; it is obvious that it makes the employee feel awkward. Silence can also be used as
manipulative power play as well as a means of intimidation which can lead to a multitude of other
negativities such as irrelevancies and misconception.
Good performance review techniques and methods come in a variety of forms ranging from the use
of management coaches to the establishment and distribution of written evaluations. Evaluations
should include all direct reports from those employees who work within the department; from
beginning to end, the process of using a questionnaire benefits gloriously to a manager and their
employees. Discovering what employees genuinely think of a manager s work and leadership
abilities proves crucial as it becomes an essential step in maintaining strengths and improving
weaknesses. The use of a hired management coach can help during the performance reviews
immensely; as their job is to aide in the facilitation of meetings, coaches can assist in assuring that

The Olympic Games in Ancient Greece and Now
Throughout the years, major events such as the Olympic games have shaped our history,
establishing global tradition and unity. The games serve as a gathering for hundreds of competing
nations, with each country showcasing their best athletes. However, the games were not always
how they are today and have changed dramatically throughout the years.
The first recorded Olympics were held in 776 B.C. However, it is believed that the games had
been going on much earlier. It is said that Heracles, the son of Zeus and Alcmene, was the founding
father of the Olympic games (The Olympic Games 1). The Olympics essentially began as a
religious ceremony honoring the Greek god Zeus. The celebration was a sporting event held in
Olympia, where the title of the Olympics was originated. The festival occurred every four years in
the summer and featured a series of athletic contests. Many of which are very different from the
sports played today.
The games played during the Olympics in ancient Greece over three thousand years ago consisted
of running and equestrian events, javelin, wrestling and boxing. Horse drawn chariots were often
used in equestrian events. Over time new sports were added. As culture changed and the games
became international, sports such as chariot races were no longer a part of the modernized
Olympics. The combination between wrestling and boxing was a sport known as pankration.
However the sport included no rules. This has changed with the introduction of the modern

In 2001, Morland et al. (2001) investigate the impact of visual dysfunction on cortical visual
responses with three different studies. This studies differ in the sense that the subjects have visual
deficits that are expressed at different levels of the visual system. First, they describe the effects
on the cortical visual maps of abnormal retinal receptor distributions that are found in rod
monochromacy (only possesses operating rod photoreceptors). Subject KN, aged 56 year old has
a complete absence of cone photoreceptors. KN also has a central scotoma which has been

brothers became successful farmers and John s widow Jane continued the tradition. The site of
their first farm Riccarton Bush is now a central city park and nature reserve. Being trained as

Carol Vernallis A Little Piece Of Heaven
Carol Vernallis states in her analyzation paper on music videos Telling and Not Telling , quote,
Music videos do not embody complete narratives or convey finely wrought stories for numerous
reasons, some obvious some less so (CP 37). While it is true in some ways (Let s be real, if you
really wanted to make a long, well made plot with an outstanding soundtrack along, you d most
likely make a movie, not a musicvideo), it s not impossible. It can be said that with the right
writers, directors, and artists, a high caliber music video with a solid plot that goes in hand with
the song is born. This is certainly the case for the music video of the song A Little Piece of

But underneath the gloomy backgrounds, high amounts of blood and body parts as well as
thigh heater gags and skeleton choirs, a hidden story follows along the 8 minute long narrative.
The story of a person losing a loved one and dealing with grief (Denying the loss, feeling anger
for it, try to bargain the pain but end up depressed only to prevail, accepting things are the way
need to be and moving on as the person we lost did as well). The happy ending is there to tell the
viewers it s never too late and we should all strive for our happiness. While it may be hard to
perceive, a viewer observing the video with this idea in mind may develop a feeling of
compassion as well, because it s something every human has gone through or will eventually, as
there s no avoiding death. It brings a positive message to all, highlighting that those we love are
up in a piece of heaven while we on Earth should make our own little piece of it as well.
Compared to more popular songs videos, which can just be an amalgamation of handsome men or

to it being rich in meaning, feeling and, most touching of all, humanity. In conclusion, one final

Man Is The Real Man Essay
As we may know from our school lessons in Biology, the human brain is mostly dormant we use
only a tiny fraction of its potential. Although scientists know much more now about the workings
of the human brain than they did 30 years ago, there are still vast areas of brain that have remained
unexplored and still mysterious. And the reason for this is that those silent areas of the brainwere
created for supernatural purposes.
The gifts inherent in these parts of the brain were almost certainly used by a lot of Ancient mystics,
prophets, sages and wisemen and women as they could directly communicate with the Deities of
the Old and even understand the language of other creatures such as animals, plants and even
faefolks. However, years passed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There are areas in man s nature that lie from man s physical senses and instruments but nevertheless
profoundly affect his body s well being. The great physician surgeon and Nobel prize winner, Dr.
Alexis Carrel, was humble enough to admit this fact in his monumental and highly readable book
called, Man, the Unknown.
Said Dr. Carrell:
Man, as known to the specialists, is far from being the concrete man, the real man. He is nothing but
a schema, consisting of other schemata built up by the techniques of each science... In fact, our
ignorance is profound... Immense regions of our inner world are still unknown.
In conclusion, third eye is for real, yes. It s our pineal gland! The aim of third eye or the power is
to facilitate or hasten the process so we may reach the goal faster, which is to understand the
purpose our purpose, our mission and such. The gifts should ennoble the spirit and make us all
better human beings, better walker of the path we choose to follow. No other purpose of third eye
or the abilities is valid in my humble opinions, except that it leads us to the Higher Consciousness.
And the sooner we realize that the Higher Ideals are within us all, the nearer we shall be to the

Gravy And She Lives In A Pat Of Butter
Based on the poems Gravy by Corrie Lynn White and She lives in a Pat of Butter by Jade
Ramsay, women are forced to be a role model in family life and domesticity. Although women
generally need to give a great amount of effort to be the best mother or wife, the social
expectations from both of the poems want women to be perfect especially in domestic life. In fact,
there was even a time when female domesticity became the culture of some upper and middle class
Americans back in the nineteenth century (The Cult of Domesticity). Their purpose was to limit
womans influences only to familylife or handling chores around the home. Both of the poems show
that the expectations of seeing every woman must definitely have a happy life after marriage...

Since the poem itself has the title that comes from the name of a food, the narrator is probably
eager to talk about her story with food. She firmly disagrees with the societal expectations that
women have to know how to cook and for her to at least successfully stir a gravy. She also says
in the poem that [she] thought the world wanted [her] to stir the gravy around with a wooden
spoon, because as soon as [she] looks away, the gravy would boil over (25 29). This means that
no matter how society the society wishes her to be like, she will not always be able to fulfill
their expectations. Hence, the failure of preparing a gravy clearly shows that she does not know
how to make a gravy like the society think. Furthermore, the narrator is also left in awe as she
knows that many people do not even care to follow social expectations. This is stated in the line
[she] watched the bird fly over Wells Fargo (31 32). The bird seems to represent other people and
flying over Wells Fargo means that they avoid the expectations of society. Towards the end of the
poem, she now knows that she can be that other people too and finally leaves the gravy

Examples Of Lexical Cohesion
This paper tackles how cohesion can be effective to make the text more united. Both cohesive
devices; lexical and grammatical, have a powerful role in giving the text texture. Lexical devices are
repetition, antonyms, synonyms, and general words. On the other hand, grammatical devices are
reference, conjunction, and ellipsis. Both of them provide the text harmony and meaning.
Lexical Cohesion Lexical cohesion occurs when two words are semantically related to each other
such as, repetition, synonyms, antonyms, general words, and superordinate. Firstly, repetition
occurs when one word is mentioned more than one time throughout the text. To illustrate, the word
and is repeated about 22 times in the text , the word her is repeated around 15 times in paragraphs
number 1, 2, 8, 9, 10, 11, and 13, the morpheme mother is repeated 5 times in paragraphs number 1,
8, and 14, the pronoun I ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Secondly, conjunctions link between clauses and sentences. They signal the way the writer wants
the reader to relate the sentence to what have been said or what is going to be said throughout the
text. Conjunctions have many types such as, additive, causal, adversative, and temporal. Additive
conjunctions, also in paragraph number 6, or in paragraph number 3, and in paragraphs number 4, 7,
10, 11, 12, 13, and 14, are used when the writer wants to add more information to his idea. Causal
conjunctions like, in order to in paragraph number 7, so in paragraph number 8, 9, and 14, and
because in paragraph number 14, are used to tell a reason or a result. Adversative conjunctions like,
but in paragraph 8, and although in paragraph number 11, are used to confirm opposite ideas.
Temporal conjunction like, since in paragraph number 9, is used to confirm

The Boy In The Striped Pajamas Essay
The Boy in Striped Pajamas is a heartrending film based on Bruno s struggles with friends, family,
and a new home. Bruno, a young boy who is the son of a Nazi soldier, faces multiple troublesome
situations. Even through Bruno s struggles, the film supports a major theme of friendship. In this
movie, Bruno and Shmuel strike an unlikely friendshipthat would ultimately be life changing. The
movie makes it clear that friendship can break all boundaries. The Boyin Striped Pajamas
effectively uses the elements of sound, costuming, lighting, and dialogue to support the theme of
friendship. The element of sound is used throughout the entirety of the filmto support the essence of

Lighting is used multiple times throughout the film to support the theme of friendship. The first
example of lighting is present in the opening scenes of the movie. As Bruno and his friends are
playfully running through the streets of Berlin, the sun is shining and the picture is bright. In
contrast, Bruno s home when he finds out that his family is moving is dark and gloomy. Once
again, the director uses the lighting to display Bruno s emotions. When Bruno is with his friends,
the shining light indicates his happiness. However, when Bruno discovers that he is leaving his
friends, the dark lighting displays Bruno s dismal feeling. Similarly, the same concepts are used in
the later stages of the film. As Bruno wanders into the backyard, he finds the shed with a window, a
possible route to the farm . As Bruno looks up at the window, the light shining through the open
window is vibrant. This bright light represents Bruno s escape from this place without friends to the
farm where friendship surely awaits him. Finally, the director uses lighting in scenes with both
Bruno and Shmuel to show their friendship. In scenes where Bruno and Shmuel are together, the
lighting is bright, once again representing the friendship between the two, along with Bruno s
happiness in this friendship. However, in the closing scenes of the movie, the lighting while Bruno
and Shmuel are together becomes

Legalization Of Marijuan Recreational And Medicinal Purposes
Marijuana: Recreational to Cultural to Medicinal Purpose and Legalization Kalpana Sapkota
Northwestern Oklahoma State University Abstract This paper provides detailed information about
the controversial topic that is the legalization of marijuana. Different articles proved that legal
status of marijuana has been debated vigorously and will continue to be a heated debate for years
to come. Marijuana has its negative effect but it can be used for recreational, cultural and medicinal
purposes. Different people have different views regarding legalization of marijuana, but the most
significant argument against legalization is that governmental approval of marijuana as a
prescription drug would send the wrong message to the general population and would cause more
extensive recreational use of this drug. The appropriate government response to the negative effects
is to fight them directly b stopping the illegal practitioners from doing them (Barnes, 2000, p.29).
Legalization of marijuana does not force people to use it but it is a personal choice to have it or not.
Marijuana has its positive and negative effects, but the government should make plan to increase
the positive effect and to eliminate the negative effect. Keywords: controversial,
neuropharmacologic, long term memory, short term memory, Mahashivaratri. Marijuana the
common drug The term marijuana is a word with many different names and indistinct origins. It is

The two theories I will utilize from this course in order to explain my patient s behavior are the
psychodynamic theory and the systems theory.
Theories to Explain Behavior The psychodynamic theory would explain an individual s personality
in terms of conscious and unconscious forces, such as unconscious desires and beliefs. In the early
20th century, Sigmund Freud proposed the psychodynamic theory consists of the id (accountable
for instincts and pleasure seeking), the superego (attempts to submit to the rules of parents and
society), and the ego (which facilitates between the id and superego according to the stresses of
reality) (Cherry, n.d.). Psychodynamic theories believe childhood experiences shape a person s
personality.
The systems theory would focus on the micorsystems, which are the interpersonal relations
experienced by the developing person. Amy s challenge will also be explained through her
mesosystem, this would be the linkage and processes that take place between two or more setting
containing the developing person (ST article ). Lastly through the systems theory Amy s challenge
will be analyzed through her macrosystem which is a societal blueprint for a particular culture. (ST

The History Of Big Data
In recent years, there has been an increasing emphasis on big data, business analytics, and smart
living and work environments. Though these conversations are predominantly practice driven,
organizations are exploring how large volume data can usefully be deployed to create and capture
value for individuals, businesses, communities, and governments (McKinsey Global Institute,
2011). Big data refers to data volumes in the range of exabytes (1018) and beyond. Such volumes
exceed the capacity of current on line storage systems and processing systems. Data, information,

Life Changing Moment In Life
When reminiscing on my past I m able to recall the certain moments, which have led to a path
where I find myself at a cross road. Searching through the databases of my mind, I m reminded of
cherished memories, though I attempt to pinpoint the times in which I have been successful in my
decision making; I cannot help but deliberate whether my past conveyed such a challenging
decision. My futureis unpredictable, and my choices will decide my prolonged existence; positive
or negative I must act on them now, or else I will miss the train to my forthcoming. Through the
life changing moments, which led to my admiration for the ones close to me; I have found what
identifies me as an individual. Nonetheless, will it be enough for the rapid pace at which my future
emerges?
Life changing, it s a term to identify an event that will forever transform someone, and the life
they are currently living; sounds self explanatory, though it isn t such a simple phrase.
Considering the expression; life changing is watching a friend fight cancer, battling each day not
knowing if she will get better. Moreover, Parents who are combating a recession, struggling to
generate money with the profession they find themselves in; moving from house to house trying
to stay joyful to a child who may not identify the extent of the situation. Trails such as these have
caused my life to be significantly altered. However, these events are only a minor fraction of my
narrative. For instance, I ve helped lead a movement against bullying, being triumphant with the
results. Furthermore, I had the opportunity to represent my school at a World Leadership
Conference, being able to express heartache, happiness, and love to individuals, some who have
experienced horrible tragedies, was such an eye opening experience. These events in my life have
erupt a fire in my soul, and striving to build upon each situation will only be beneficial for my
future endeavors.
Reflecting these life changing moments, I come to a realization that not all memories are so
influential, but more of a comforting feeling. My family vacations to Walt Disney World helped
bring imagination and inspiration inside of a young boy s mind. Playing on my childhood play set

to describe her as brutal and maybe even unsympathetic yet Douglas manages to give layers to
this character that weren t just an evil hard ass but showed a human side to her that had pain and

Descriptive Power Of Nature
Deep in the mountains in the southwest corner of North Carolina is a river unlike any other.
Halfway through my perilous rafting journey, there was a moment when time stood still. I
witnessed a natural phenomenon which displayed the beauty of nature at its finest. During that
moment, I realized the insignificance of humanity, and why we should respect the overwhelming
power of nature. The Nantahala is a whitewater river nestled in a valley with steep mountains
flanking it on all sides. The forest it was situated in is the only temperate rainforest east of the
Mississippi River. The rafting Industry has adopted this river as its premier destination. I was a
14 year old Boy Scout on a three day camping trip in the Nantahala Gorge. The weather was
cloudy with periodic rain showers throughout the day and night. The temperature was at the mid
80 s but never got above the 90 s. I was in a bright yellow raft shared amongst five of my
companions and a rafting Guide who went by the name Bones. Bones was a Caucasian man
with dreads in his hair, tattoos of paddles shaped as a pirates cross on both of his arms, and was
massively strong. We floated down the river like leaves down a stream; constantly fighting to stay
upright and not be cast overboard by the restless aggression of the rapids. We were part of the way
through a two hour journey down the Nantahala river. It had rained continuously throughout the trip,
which meant we were soaked to the bone and fighting hypothermia.

Oedipus-Complex In Shakespeare s Hamlet
Renowned psychoanalyst, Sigmund Freud, coined the term Oedipus complex in 1910 when
explaining a child s psychological desire for his opposite sex parent. Coupled with this desire is a
bitter sense of rivalry with the parent of the same sex, as the child feels envious and compelled to
win the affection of the coveted parent (Freud 19). Shakespeare s Hamlet, although written prior to
the development of this theory, is often referenced as a prime example of this complex. Hamlet
famously descends into madness in an effort to avenge his father s death; however, although
Hamlet is seemingly devastated by the loss of his father, it is not until he learns of his mother s
marriage to Claudius that he truly begins to unravel. Once alone, he erupts... Show more content on

They provide the three classes of ghosts that Elizabethans recognized: the authentic, subjective, or
false ghost.
When illustrating the characteristics of a false ghost, they describe, It was thought to be a
prankish delight of the devil to assume the shape of a person lately dead and in this guise appear
to relatives and incite them to some deed which if consummated would entail the forfeiture of
their souls (Boas and Hahn 99). Because Shakespeare was undoubtedly Protestant, he surely
intended for the ghost in Hamlet to reflect the qualities of a false ghost, for Protestants believed
that ghosts were truly demons sent from Hell to tempt people into performing unholy acts.
Consequently, the ghost of the king is unquestionably a demon sent to persuade Hamlet to fulfill
his utmost unholy desire: to be with his mother. However, if this ghost is truly a demon, it would
not want to appear as such to Hamlet. As Boas and Hahn suggest when referencing Hamlet, this
demon materializes under the guise of urging Hamlet to commit a heroic act of justice, when in
reality it is tempting him to remove the only person who stands in the way of his deepest, sinful
wish. If the ghost were to command him to murder Claudius so Hamlet can fulfill his incestuous
desires, Hamlet would be less apt to act because he does not want to acknowledge such desires, for
the Oedipus complex is an unconscious and repressed affliction.

Notes On Purchasing Power Parity
Purchasing power Parity (PPP), is a theory stating that the unit of one currency should have the
same purchasing power as the foreign currency. Following the theory, where the normal exchange
rate between two currencies should be the same as the ratio of aggregate price level between them.
It can be also called inflationtheory of exchange rates as it stands for the theory of a change of
price level where as the overriding determinant of exchange ratemovements. It is the same status
as Quantity theory of money(QT). To make things clear, the dogma of PPP or its alternative
Law of one Price (LOOP), states that when goods in the basket expressed in a single currency
meaning that they cost the same in all countries. This can be achieved only if the rate or nominal
exchange rate is equal to the differences between growth rate. The dental of LOP context is to
find the most disaggregate product and price can be readily material provides as strong
presumption that it is impossible to assemble available date into aggregate price index which can
be expected to obey the LOP.
It is introduced in 1918 by Cassel, due to World War I, while there was an international policy
debate about the appropriate level for nominal exchange rates among countries after the large scale
of inflations. Rogoff (1196), expressed that some economists takes PPP seriously in the Short
Run(S/R), but the red variant of PPP, is in the long run exchange rate. Dornbusch and Krugman

The word snowman is not offensive by any means. It was not created with an intension to offend,
demean, or label any group. But the new term for snowman is snowperson. Frosty the Snowman,
the children s tale that familiarized America with the term snowman, was originally created as a
Christmas song. ( Frosty the Snowman was a Tin Pan Alley novelty created by Jack Nelson and
Steve Rollins in 1950. Wikipedia online Encyclopedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snowman ) .
It was not a story of a snow woman. It was a story of a snowman. The name snowperson suggests
that it is unisex, and to consider Frosty as unisex would numb the creative aspects of our holiday
song and children s stories of Frosty the Snowman. This is an overly sensitive effort to stop a word
that has no offensive connotation and kill its creative and historical meaning.
However, many groups claim that political correctness in society is justified in its efforts to
sanitize offensive material created though years of oppressing minorities. What was originally a
noble idea, to remove blatant words of offensive meaning, has turned into an over the top effort
to rid any words of possible controversy. We are regulating our ways of plain speaking, freedom

Difference Between Macronutrient Vs. Micronutrients
Difference Between Macronutrients and Micronutrients
Nutrients required for the survival of mankind and other living creatures can be divided into two
categories. They are macronutrients and micronutrients. There seems to be a lot of confusion over
the difference between macronutrients and micronutrients. The main difference between
macronutrients and micronutrients is that human body requires macronutrients in larger quantities
whereas micronutrients are needed in smaller quantities. The major macronutrients are
carbohydrate, protein and fat which contribute to the bulk of our food. They are the structural and
energy giving caloric constituents of our foods. Meanwhile, micronutrients such as vitamins,

Basic Concepts Of Organization Design
Basic Approach to Organization Design
Organizing is basically about who does what. It means defining responsibilities, building structures
and developing relationships (Boutros Purdie, 2013). The main element in organization is people
what they do how they work together.
When organizing a new organization structure, you must be advisable on:
what the organization is there to do
circumstance which the activities are carried out (technology, rate of growth or change,
management/style, outside environment)
requirements to achieve the aim of the organization
group related activities
establish relationships that should exist in the organization (vertically/within functions horizontally
/between functions)
ensuring that everyone in the organization understands their responsibilities, authority, structure,
relationships.
Boutros Purdie, 2013
The process of structuring an organization is akin to building something with a box of bricks. The
bricks are the key activities or groups. First thing to do is define what these bricks are. Then this is
fitted together to build up a structure. There will be several ways which these bricks can be
grouped together. Experimenting with alternative arrangements will help decide which pattern
looks best. These could be an outcome of two to three structures (Boutros Purdie, 2013).
These constant changes cause organizational problems within the structure.
Formal and informal organizations: A formal organizationcan be a

Depression And Depression In The Bell Jar By Sylvia Plath
Depression is like drowning in a pool of water and there is absolutely no escape from it. In The
Bell Jar, written by Sylvia Plath, the main character, Esther Greenwood goes through the awful
troubling depths of depression. The Bell Jar goes back in time beginning in the summer of 1953
and follows the story of Esther Greenwood. Esther should be having the time of her life having
won an internship in New York City, but the unfortunate truth is that she is slowly falling further
into a deep depression. Sylvia Plath strongly incorporates metaphors, internal conflict, and
symbolism to reveal the theme that despite the hardships and awful drowning thoughts that
plague people s mind, life does get better, if only people don t lose hope. To begin with, Sylvia
Plath successfully incorporates internal conflict to reveal that Esther doesn t know what to do
with herself after not getting accepted into the writing program of her dreams, which is also
when she starts falling into her deep depression. According to author Kirsty Grocott, the illness
is [Esther s] reality and everything outside [Esther s] own head feels flimsy and unreal (Grocott,
Sylvia Plath s Bell Jar Still Haunts Me ). Esther feels unsure of what she wants to do with her
life. Esther saw her life as if it was a fig tree. She saw one fig as a husband and a happy home and
children, and another fig was a famous poet and another fig was a brilliant professor (Plath
Sylvia 77). Esther seems paralyzed on what fig she wants to choose. It appears as if she wants
all of them, but she realizes that if she only chooses one she can t have the rest. Esther appears
bewildered because she doesn t know what life choice to make. The hardships that Esther is
enduring appears to be too much for her to handle. Secondly, Sylvia Plath strongly utilizes a
beating heart as a metaphor to disclose how Esther just can t find the will to succumb to her
depression. When decides to go to the beach on a double date, the thought of drowning herself
profoundly crossed her mind. As she was swimming in the ocean she thought: that drowning must
be the kindest way to die...but as I paddled on, my heartbeat boomed like a dull motor in my ears, I
am, I am, I am (Plath 157 158). It

infringement, these violations have been called, in the absence of any standard terminology, by
various names like Cyber squatting, Passing off, Name grabbing etc. Nearer home in India, when
a Website called htpp:/marks and Spencer.co. UK came up, Marks and Spencer Private Company
Limited had to seek judicial remedy against the British Company named One in a Million for a
restraint order.
It was held that the name Marks and Spencer could not have been chosen for any other reasons
except that it was associated with the well known retailing group . In another case, it was held that
the Internet domain names are of importance and can be valuable corporate assets and that a
domain name is more than an Internet address. A company carrying on business of communication
and providing services through the Internet, carried a domain name REDIFF which had been
widely published. The defendant company also started using the same domain name transcripting it
as RADIFF . It was found that the only object in adopting this domain name was to trade upon the
reputation of the plaintiff s domain name. An injunction was ordered

ragedy developed rapidly throughout the Renaissance and, although Marlowe was an innovator in
the form, his works often seemed schematic and unsophisticated in comparison to later, more
advanced plays. Julia Briggs argues that the drama developed into an exact and sensitive register of
the age s central issues: the relative of moral judgment, the unstable nature of language and
character, and the individual s challenging position in relation to the universe. Tragedy presented
itself as a form which matched the expression and subversion of typical Elizabethan issues, partly
because the relationship that is established between audience and stage. Instead of exercising the

compares Tamburlaine to Marlowe, identifying both men as over reachers. Just as Tamburlaine
never escapes the attraction of the earthly crowne, so Marlowe remains an ineffective saboteur
fighting a doomed battle against the overwhelming forces of Renaissance cultural discipline. He
cites values of transience as a means to fight the Renaissance order, never acknowledging that
transience is an essential quality of this order. It is transience that dictated the success of his plays,
the nature of his rebellion and the circumstances of his death. The point at which Marlowe s lines

This hard physical work required a tremendous labor force trained to handle organized chaos.
The staff, both nice and hard working were limited in their abilities and appeared destined to
pursue this endeavor for the rest of their lives. It presented an experience distant from the hotel
culture. Mayo, the only full time busboy, tall, slender, and always punctual, was quite a
character. A black server with a scruffy appearance and a quasi Van Dyke goatee, Japes figured
he inherited some sort of learning disability as he grinned and mumbled to himself all day long.
Everyone made exceptions for Mayo thus allowing him to be part of the team. Through years of
repetition he developed a thorough understanding of his well established routine. One of Japes
first managerial challenges, per Kitty, involved teaching Mayo how to properly shave even
though he was a fifty year old server not some wayward teenager. Mayo always looked half
shaven with his whiskers a flying, as he had worked there for twenty years and nobody ever
encouraged him to change anything. It took all of his skills to persuade Mayo as to the virtues
of a nice clean look, and eventually he took it to heart by shaving very close. When Mayo arrived
at work he looked as though he shaved with a lawnmower with his face cut in many places and he,
rightfully agitated. Japes learned, after the fact, that many black men have curly facial hair, which

Causes And Effects Of Race Riots In America
The working conditions were very difficult, tiring, and dangerous but the workers were fine with
that considering they were getting paid three times more than they were in the south. Female
migrants also searched for work but found it much more of a challenge due to competition for
domestic labor positions. There was a large amount of competition for jobs but considering the
increasing population percentage in crowded cities, living space was also a competition many
African Americans were faced with. The North offered more food and better housing, but also some
unhealthy and overcrowded accommodations that helped spread tuberculosis . Segregation was not
legal in the North like it was in the South but racismand prejudice were wide spread through the
United States. Racially based housing ordinances were declared unconstitutional by the U.S.
Supreme Court in 1917. It led some neighborhoods to pass an agreement that requires white
property owners to agree not to sell to blacks, until 1948 when the court turned down the agreement.
A large amount of raceriots began after 1915 when the rent rose in segregated areas and a
reawakening activity by the KKK which brought problems between relations of blacks and
whites. The most disturbing wave of race riots took place in Chicago, July of 1919, lasting 13
days. It left 38 people dead, 537 injured and 1,000 black families homeless. With all the tension
between blacks and whites, the blacks went ahead and made their own

This is a state of the art book on conflict management and negotiation by well known negotiator

Tone amp; Expression of author was strong in beginning but it has become soften when third
segment of book started from How can we stop? And at the end again tone amp; expression of
author found strong. Ideology of an author is ideal which might be varied from culture to culture
amp; Society to Society. Argument presented in the paperback with lot of enthusiasm amp;
conviction, one should appreciate it as well. Grip on content were sufficient within a single part
of book and linkages among thr paragraphs were better but among the three parts it bit distracted
as first part of book was bit lengthy amp; over detailed and reader may lost the direction if he is
not reading it in a one sitting. Conclusion has been depicted in a very persuasive amp; suggestive
manner which left the profound impression on the reader mind about the third side amp; Conflict

It s a significant contribution by William Ury to the domain of conflict Management. It s not only
give the new meaning to manage the relationships while dealing with difficult people which is
need of today s world specially for the society of Pakistan, but also it is equally instructive for the
students of social sciences or psychology. One should read it once in his/her life whether one is

World War I As The War
End All Wars knew World War I as the War. This massive war involved thirty two countries but a
country that had a very important role was Russia. In the beginning two sides formed, the allies
and the central powers. Russia was the first to mobilize its army because it came to the aid of its
ally Serbia after the assassination of their Archduke Franz Ferdinand by a terrorist group from
Austria Hungary. In result of Russia mobilizing it s army, Germany, who was in support of Austria
Hungary, declared war on Russia. Due to the Franco Russian alliance drafted previously in 1892
France then mobilizes too. Soon after Germany declares war on France, Belgium and Great Britain
gets involved and they fought Germany on what was known as the Western Front. A day after the
Serbs defeat the Austro Hungarians at the Battle of the Cer the Russian army decides to attack
Germany, advancing to East Prussia. The battle of Russia and Germany was known as the Battle of
Stallupönen on August 17th, 1914, which was the first battle on the Eastern Front. In this first
battle of 84,000 Russians against 16,000 Germans, The Russians were defeated. After that the
Germans played their offense and attacked the Russians on August 20th, at The Battle of
Gumbinnen. Despite the offense attack the Germans lost that battle because of their eagerness to
defeat Russia in another effort to end the two front war. The Russian Army decided to split up with

Morgan s Imagined Communities
1.
Imagined communities, according to Anderson, are a form of speech communities created by the
mass production of shared media. They are imagined because members will never meet all other
members face to face. The Morgan piece on speech communities begins by describing a music
video, which itself begins with two rappers speaking on the phone in different languages in
different countries. After a conversation, the two meet up in person and begin the song. Morgan
describes this as a speech community formed around a shared style of music, with members of the
community belonging to various demographics. This would fit Anderson s model of imagined
communities as the community is formed around a shared consumption of a form of media with
members who will never interact with most other members. Anderson s model is primarily
criticized for two reasons: it is too vertical and it ignores hierarchy within communities.

The Problem Of Illegal Immigration
Most people believe that some critical situations can be fixed with small changes like playing
cards!. Therefor, people should first know what are the causes then they can suggest solutions to
fix the problem or block it. Illegal immigration has been a problem that has plagued the United
States for many years. Most people wish to find solutions to help the United Statesto prevent illegal
immigrations. Since the number of illegal immigrants is increasing and there have not been any
positive solutions to prevent or reduce this problem, many researchers keep researching for helpful
solutions. Although the United States is basically a country of immigrants, that does not
necessarily mean they should accept illegal immigrants. Because illegal immigrants have been
increasing since 1980, especially from Mexico, the most useful solutions to help the United States
government to reduce illegal immigrants are not giving newborns U.S citizenship, forcing border
guards to be more active, and stop hiring illegal immigrants.
Generally, for a long time the United States has complained about the huge number of illegal
immigrants that come from Mexico and have found it difficult to block them. According to Zong
and Batalova ,2014 Mexicans have been the largest immigrant group in the United States. As of
2013, approximately 11.6 million Mexican immigrants resided in the United States up from 2.2
million in 1980 and Mexican accounted for 28 percent of 41.3 million foreign born . This

Argumentative Essay On Alcatraz
Alcatraz Argumentative Essay Could three men have made it across the freezing waters of the
San Francisco Bay on a homemade raft? Frank Morris, John Anglin, and Clarence Anglin
attempted to escape Alcatraz (A high security prison surrounded by water) by using a homemade
raft and gathered tools. Did they escape or die trying? The evidence shows Frank Morris and the
Anglin brothers died trying to break free from Alcatraz. Here is their creative escape plan. Alcatraz
was opened in August 1934(Hopkins). Three of the 1,300 prisoners that spent time at Alcatraz
(Frank Morris, John Anglin, and Clarence Anglin) attempted one of the most famous escape
attempts of all time. According to PrisonEscape from Alcatraz, the three men attempted to get
onto the roof through a ventilation system from their cells. They used sharpened spoons and
nail clippers to dig a hole in their cells. They each made a vent cover to conceal their hole when
the prison guards passed by. The guards also patrolled at night, so they used dummy heads to
trick the guards into thinking they were still in bed. Once they loosened a flawed air vent they
were able to get on the roof. They got past the razor wire on the roof and used rope to travel to the
ground. In order to get over the San Francisco Bay, they used an inflatable raft made from over 50...

A Critique of Chapter 11 in Neil Postman s Technopoly Essay
A Critique of Chapter 11 in Neil Postman s Technopoly In chapter 11 (The Loving Resistance
Fighter) of the book Technopoly, published in 1992, Neil Postman focuses on a solution to the
problems created by Technopoly. A Technopoly (a word postman capitalizes throughout the book)
is a society that no longer merely uses technology as a support system but instead is shaped by it.
Postman proposes that we become loving resistance fighter(s) who retain the narratives and
symbols that once made the United States the hope of the world (p.182). He believes education is
to lead the resistance against technology by changing the curriculum to help restore a sense of
meaning and purpose lost to the Technopoly.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In chapter 11 Postman gives examples of people who resist the American Technopoly. An
example of a resistance fighter is a person who ignores a poll unless they know the questions
asked and why. As Postman introduced in chapter 8 ( Invisible Technologies ), the form of a
question can produce many different answers. It may also restrict us from seeing solutions to
problems that may become visible through a question worded differently. Postman shares the
story of two priests who write the Pope asking if it was allowable to smoke and pray at the same
time. One priest phrased the question Is it permissible to smoke while praying? and the
response was no because praying should be the focus of ones attention; the other priest asked Is
it permissible to pray while smoking? and the response was yes, since it is always appropriate to
pray. The opinion of almost any issue is a function of the question asked. In the American
Technopoly the opinion poll is a strict yes or no answer to an unexamined question. One is
therefore unable to share their knowledge and is easily mislead to answer a question in a certain
way. Another example of a resistance fighter is a person who does not allow psychology or any
social science to pre empt the language and thought of common sense. This example clearly relates
to chapter 9 ( Scientism ), in which Postman expresses his annoyance of the many people who have
a strong

Can We Have Free Trade and Protect the Environment?
Endorsing free trade is easy. Ask an Economics professor why free trade
is good and you will surely be shown a graph with three or more
intersecting lines that show a higher rate of output for nations that
participate in free trade than nations that do not. Opposing free trade,
at least on economic grounds, is a bit harder unless you are an
environmentalist.
The economic advantages of free trade were recently brought to light at
the meeting of North and South American nations in Quebec City last
month to discuss the proposed Free Trade Areaof the Americas (FTAA).
The proposed agreement would reduce tariff barriers on everything from ... Show more content on

Not surprisingly, exemption from U.S. environmental
regulations has led to toxic releases of PCBs, pesticide sprays,
chlorine compounds, phenols, and hazardous wastes in areas of Mexico
designated as maquilas, or free trade zones. Inequalities between
national environmental standards have also hurt U.S. firms by reducing
the costs of production abroad, and thus the price competitiveness of
U.S. industries in all NAFTA markets. Extended to cover the entire
American hemisphere, inequality in environmental standards could lead to
even more environmental damages by precipitating a race to the bottom
where individual countries shuffle to lower their environmental
standards relative to other states in order to attract investment from
wealthy countries. Environmental standards in Mexico have failed to
progress in the last eight years precisely for this reason.
But are environmental standards so necessary? Environmental protection
seems expensive for less developed countries and is frequently seen as
the luxury of rich nations. Yet evidence from econometric analysis of
the influence of environmental standards on economic growth shows this
simply is not true. The link between environmental protection and
economic growth is particularly strong for developing countries, whose
growth rates are particularly sensitive to changes in the supply and
productivity of human capital.

  • 2. Evolution Of Surgeons Medical innovation led to surgery and the profession it has become. Surgical procedures have taken place since the 18th century ( Surgeons 597). Among these were limb amputations and tumor resections. Because anesthetic was not developed until the 19th century, patients were either tied to a table, drank large amounts of alcohol and took opium to mask the immense pain ( Surgeons 597). During the year of 1846 surgerywas modernized ( Surgeons 597). With anesthesia, the number of surgical opportunities increased rapidly. In 1867, Joseph Lister developed antiseptic after gaining knowledge from Louis Pasteur s studies on bacteria ( Surgeons 597). By the 20th century, the profession had to split into specialties because of its growth ( Surgeons 597). The American Board of Medical Specialists was also created during this time to certify up and coming surgeons after their residency ( Surgeons 597). The end of the century brought advancements with imaging such as X ray and the invention of surgical procedures performed with lasers ( Surgeons 597).... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 3. My Learner s Academic Development On Their Past Work And... I am basing my descriptions of my Average Learner s academic development on their past work and observations. They can read and understand simple texts. In fact, the history textbook for this class is within their reading level and so they can read and understood information therein. In addition, they can listen and follow verbal instructions. For them, I do not have to repeat nor display my instruction on the whiteboard nor through PowerPoint slides, but I do sometimes have to speak slower to assure they can hear what I say. They can write simple and complex sentences, with a high degree of clarity. (I will provide further information about this when I describe their language development later in this paper). Collectively, they can collaborate in groups, preferably of no more than three students in a group, because anything more is not conducive to learning. The reason they work well together because most know each other from being in the same classes last year and the on the same sport team this class has many baseball players. Insofar, this has proven to be advantageous, by having them in groups, and I could not be more satisfied with the results. However, they are not perfect students. They have gaps in their speculative developments. One of them is, comprehending primary sources. They are still learning to comprehend primary document texts. For example, in the past, I had tried using length, a page long or more, and unedited primary documents. I had used George ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It s engraved into our lives, not only is it a fun way to relax, but swimming is a survival skill needed for many species to use in their lives. Swimming is part of nature, almost every living species has a natural instinct of how to swim right from birth, but humans don t, why do you think that is? Over the years, swimmingfrom a competition stand point has advanced and changed along with technology. My goal is to learn about: the regulations of competition swimming (rules and strokes), the technological advances that are pushing athletes to go beyond old records, and what is happening with swimming in your neighborhood. I hope that after reading this letter that you will decide to buy this land. First, look at the grand size of our nation if we were to purchase this territory. It would nearly double adding an amazing amount of land for people who would want to expand their families and settle in the West. Therefore it would be less crowded near the original states, and plenty of room for the Native Americans who have lived there before us and know this land better than we do. With all the new land there will be an ample amount of resources to collect. With all of this land that we would be getting, we would ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Essay on Small Business Small Business 2 In accessing the Equal Employment Opportunity Office (EEOC) website, I found it very hard to find a clear and concise reason as to why small businesses were treated differently than the larger businesses and why the law would differentiate between them. These smaller organizations are sometimes treated differently by the EEOC because they lack the resources that most large companies possess. Most small businesses can t afford to hire the best qualified people that larger businesses can and do. They may not be able to hire people that fit into the different classes (EEOC, 2008). For example, they may want to hire someone with a disabili ty but really can t afford to because they would have to make ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There are many Small Business4 different laws that are enforced by EEOC for small businesses one of which is the Title VII of the Civil Rights of 1964. This law also makes it unlawful to retaliate against a person because the person complained about discrimination or filed a charged of discrimination (Laws Enforced by EEOC). Equal Pay Act of 1963 law is equally important to small businesses. This law makes it unlawful to pay different salaries to men and women when they both are performing the exact same job. The Equal Pay Act does not exclude all disparities in wage rates paid men and women but only those disparities based only on gender (Twomey, D, and Jennings, M.M., 2011, p. 848). Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967, this law also enforced by the EEOC is intended to protect individuals who are 40 years or older from discrimination because of age. • 8. Television Genre And Style Of Mockumentaries Essay Within the realm of television today, many of the more popular comedies have a very specific style of production and way of capturing scenes. This style is often referred to as the Mockumentary style and can be seen within examples like The Office and Park and Recreation. The popularity of these shows alone have inspired many other different spin offs and takes on this specific style of comedy, but these shows shouldn t be credited as the founders of the mockumentary style. In fact, for televisionshows the mockumentary s history goes farther back by a couple of decades. This paper will attempt to discover the answers to three main questions regarding the television genre and style of mockumentaries. Firstly, the definition of a mockumentary and a general understanding of the stylistic similarities must be examined before the history of the mockumentary is to be explored. Next, the historical background will be considered as well as the cultural significance and impact of the shows that emulated this mockumentary style. Lastly, the paper will look to the current cultural contexts and the social impacts of the popular, modern day televisions shows that incorporate these styles. Through the analysis of the mockumentary style in the combination of the historical lens and the definitional lens, modern day shows that utilize this subgenre will be better understood as well as their impacts on society itself. • 9. The Philadelphia Chromosome Report The book The Philadelphia Chromosome by Jessica Wapner follows the story of how a fatal disease called Chronic Myeloid Leukemia became one of the first targets of kinase inhibitors for targeted cancer therapies. Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML) affects only a small number of people (an estimated 8,500 diagnoses this year), but was until recently considered a fatal disease. Gleevec, a drug created by Novartis (mostly) that targeted the BCR/ABL protein in CML patients. This protein causes a tyrosine kinase to uncontrollably phosphorylate myeloid cells in bone marrow. The BCR/ABL protein is caused by a gene mutation known as The Philadelphia Chromosome, which is an abnormality in chromosome 22. This abnormality is caused by a gene translocation... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... His goal is to find out how this gene leads to CML in patients, and hopefully, find a way to stop it. The bcr/abl protein constantly tells cells, specially myeloid cells, that it is time to divide, causing uncontrollable replication, and these cells have a mutation in them, they don t die like normal cells do, causing the body to overflow with these useless cancer cells. Researches at Ciba Giegy began working on a way to inhibit the bcr/abl tyrosine kinases from signaling to cells. This work resulted in a compound known as STI 571, which was a targeted kinase inhibitor. One of the fears this team faced was, if you inhibit a kinase, do you inhibit them all? Causing the patient to die, or can you manage to only inhibit a single type of kinase, leaving the rest alone to do their jobs. By 1996, Gleevec (STI 571) was shown to kill cancer cells, while leaving normal cells healthy. In 1998, Ciba Giegy (now Novartis) was ready to start phase 1 clinical trials in patients. The book details the rise of Blackwater and the growth of security contracting, especially the role it has played in the Iraq war and the War on Terrorism, which Scahill tries to expose the conduct of Blackwater. With the introduction of the Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the United States government increased its support on using contractors to assist the military. While other PMCs are used by the government, Blackwater was the company that benefited the most, which has now secured $1 billion dollars in diplomatic security contracts from the government. In the book, Scahill argues that the company s rise is a consequence of the demobilization of the US military following the Cold War and its overextension in Iraq and Afghanistan. He continues by saying how Blackwater serves in Iraq and Afghanistan, protecting top authority figures and enjoying immunity from the constraints and regulations on traditional armies. Scahill argues that Blackwater s leadership was motivated by a right wing Republican ideology, and that its founder, Erik Prince, has provided significant assistance in that setting. Body Paragraphs The Author uses sarcastic language to help us understand what the poem means. For example: when he said Let me offer an apology, too, for my talons impossibly long and curved... why would you show off while you apologise, you should feel regretful. In addition to that: when he said, I am sorry. For you, that is. All this works out quite well for me . You would not be biased when you apologise, only when you are sarcastic. • 14. How Different Temperatures Effect The Cell Membrane Of A... How different temperatures effect the cell membrane of a beetroot Hypothesis: The more betalain is leaked when the membrane is in higher temperatures Abstract: The experiment which was conducted was to identify the effects of temperature of the beetroot discs. Majority of the pigment from the beetroot is found within the vacuole which is called anthocyanin and each of the vacuole is surrounded by a tonoplast membrane. Externally the cytoplasm is surrounded by the plasma membrane hence the foundation of the experiment depends on the temperature which will rapture the membrane and lead to a leakage of the pigment. The experiment consists of several different temperatures and same sized beetroot discs, the beetroot discs will be placed in 3 sets of discs in a tube test tube which will be placed in the distilled water in same test tube. Using a colorimeter once the beetroot have been exposed to the temperatures the colour of the distilled water will change therefore leaving a coloured water to be measured by a colorimeter, this is because the colorimeter measures the light being passed through the solution. Introduction: The experiment is conducted to find out how the membrane is affected by different temperatures. Betalain pigment increases with high temperatures because most mammalian proteins denature and tertiary structure unravels because the strong covalent bonds between the R groups of amino acids in the polypeptide chains are destroyed at temperatures over 45В°C. ... • 15. Military Warfare During The Revolutionary War Essay In every major military operation, terrain, troops, and weapons often dictate the way the war is fought. The American Revolutionary War was a prime example of this military policy. It has been said that the Patriots use of guerrilla warfare was the reason why the Americans were successful in defeating the British. However, the Americans employed various tactics both on and off the battlefield that led to the ultimate defeat of the British. Though guerrilla warfare was an important facet of the Patriots military strategy against the British, the Americans ultimately won the Revolutionary War through an amalgamation of guerrilla warfare, linear battle tactics, and psychological warfare. There is no doubt that guerrilla warfare played a significant part in the American victory over the British during the Revolutionary War. This type of warfare was used by the militia and was taken from their numerous skirmishes with Native Americans. The Natives would use smaller bands of fighters to attack, with swift surprise, against the colonists and would push them into Native territory where the Natives would have the advantage. A basic premise of guerrilla warfare is to know one s terrain. Considering the battles were being fought on American soil, the militia would utilize the landscape and terrain to their advantage, much like how the Natives used the land to their advantage against the Colonists during the French and Indian War. The militia knew the land and terrain whereas ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

However, the games were not always how they are today and have changed dramatically throughout the years. The first recorded Olympics were held in 776 B.C. However, it is believed that the games had been going on much earlier. It is said that Heracles, the son of Zeus and Alcmene, was the founding father of the Olympic games (The Olympic Games 1). The Olympics essentially began as a religious ceremony honoring the Greek god Zeus. The celebration was a sporting event held in Olympia, where the title of the Olympics was originated. The festival occurred every four years in the summer and featured a series of athletic contests. Many of which are very different from the sports played today. The games played during the Olympics in ancient Greece over three thousand years ago consisted of running and equestrian events, javelin, wrestling and boxing. Horse drawn chariots were often used in equestrian events. Over time new sports were added. Although women generally need to give a great amount of effort to be the best mother or wife, the social expectations from both of the poems want women to be perfect especially in domestic life. In fact, there was even a time when female domesticity became the culture of some upper and middle class Americans back in the nineteenth century (The Cult of Domesticity). Different articles proved that legal status of marijuana has been debated vigorously and will continue to be a heated debate for years to come. Marijuana has its negative effect but it can be used for recreational, cultural and medicinal purposes. Different people have different views regarding legalization of marijuana, but the most significant argument against legalization is that governmental approval of marijuana as a prescription drug would send the wrong message to the general population and would cause more extensive recreational use of this drug. The appropriate government response to the negative effects is to fight them directly b stopping the illegal practitioners from doing them (Barnes, 2000, p.29). Legalization of marijuana does not force people to use it but it is a personal choice to have it or not. Looking at Merteuil character on paper, you d almost want to describe her as brutal and maybe even unsympathetic yet Douglas manages to give layers to this character that weren t just an evil hard ass but showed a human side to her that had pain and a soul that was damaged while maintaining that fierce persona. One of my personal favorite moments from the play was when she explains to Valmont that main source of power women of her time have the withholding of sex while Men Can ruin us whenever the fancy takes you. • 34. Descriptive Power Of Nature Deep in the mountains in the southwest corner of North Carolina is a river unlike any other. Halfway through my perilous rafting journey, there was a moment when time stood still. I witnessed a natural phenomenon which displayed the beauty of nature at its finest. During that moment, I realized the insignificance of humanity, and why we should respect the overwhelming power of nature. The Nantahala is a whitewater river nestled in a valley with steep mountains flanking it on all sides. The forest it was situated in is the only temperate rainforest east of the Mississippi River. The rafting Industry has adopted this river as its premier destination. I was a 14 year old Boy Scout on a three day camping trip in the Nantahala Gorge. The weather was cloudy with periodic rain showers throughout the day and night. The temperature was at the mid 80 s but never got above the 90 s. I was in a bright yellow raft shared amongst five of my companions and a rafting Guide who went by the name Bones. Bones was a Caucasian man with dreads in his hair, tattoos of paddles shaped as a pirates cross on both of his arms, and was massively strong. We floated down the river like leaves down a stream; constantly fighting to stay upright and not be cast overboard by the restless aggression of the rapids. We were part of the way through a two hour journey down the Nantahala river. It had rained continuously throughout the trip, which meant we were soaked to the bone and fighting hypothermia. ... • 35. Oedipus-Complex In Shakespeare s Hamlet Renowned psychoanalyst, Sigmund Freud, coined the term Oedipus complex in 1910 when explaining a child s psychological desire for his opposite sex parent. Coupled with this desire is a bitter sense of rivalry with the parent of the same sex, as the child feels envious and compelled to win the affection of the coveted parent (Freud 19). Shakespeare s Hamlet, although written prior to the development of this theory, is often referenced as a prime example of this complex. Hamlet famously descends into madness in an effort to avenge his father s death; however, although Hamlet is seemingly devastated by the loss of his father, it is not until he learns of his mother s marriage to Claudius that he truly begins to unravel. Once alone, he erupts... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They provide the three classes of ghosts that Elizabethans recognized: the authentic, subjective, or false ghost. When illustrating the characteristics of a false ghost, they describe, It was thought to be a prankish delight of the devil to assume the shape of a person lately dead and in this guise appear to relatives and incite them to some deed which if consummated would entail the forfeiture of their souls (Boas and Hahn 99). Because Shakespeare was undoubtedly Protestant, he surely intended for the ghost in Hamlet to reflect the qualities of a false ghost, for Protestants believed that ghosts were truly demons sent from Hell to tempt people into performing unholy acts. Consequently, the ghost of the king is unquestionably a demon sent to persuade Hamlet to fulfill his utmost unholy desire: to be with his mother. However, if this ghost is truly a demon, it would not want to appear as such to Hamlet. As Boas and Hahn suggest when referencing Hamlet, this demon materializes under the guise of urging Hamlet to commit a heroic act of justice, when in reality it is tempting him to remove the only person who stands in the way of his deepest, sinful wish. If the ghost were to command him to murder Claudius so Hamlet can fulfill his incestuous desires, Hamlet would be less apt to act because he does not want to acknowledge such desires, for the Oedipus complex is an unconscious and repressed affliction. ... • 40. Depression And Depression In The Bell Jar By Sylvia Plath Depression is like drowning in a pool of water and there is absolutely no escape from it. In The Bell Jar, written by Sylvia Plath, the main character, Esther Greenwood goes through the awful troubling depths of depression. The Bell Jar goes back in time beginning in the summer of 1953 and follows the story of Esther Greenwood. Esther should be having the time of her life having won an internship in New York City, but the unfortunate truth is that she is slowly falling further into a deep depression. Sylvia Plath strongly incorporates metaphors, internal conflict, and symbolism to reveal the theme that despite the hardships and awful drowning thoughts that plague people s mind, life does get better, if only people don t lose hope. To begin with, Sylvia Plath successfully incorporates internal conflict to reveal that Esther doesn t know what to do with herself after not getting accepted into the writing program of her dreams, which is also when she starts falling into her deep depression. According to author Kirsty Grocott, the illness is [Esther s] reality and everything outside [Esther s] own head feels flimsy and unreal (Grocott, Sylvia Plath s Bell Jar Still Haunts Me ). Esther feels unsure of what she wants to do with her life. Esther saw her life as if it was a fig tree. She saw one fig as a husband and a happy home and children, and another fig was a famous poet and another fig was a brilliant professor (Plath Sylvia 77). Esther seems paralyzed on what fig she wants to choose. It appears as if she wants all of them, but she realizes that if she only chooses one she can t have the rest. Esther appears bewildered because she doesn t know what life choice to make. The hardships that Esther is enduring appears to be too much for her to handle. Secondly, Sylvia Plath strongly utilizes a beating heart as a metaphor to disclose how Esther just can t find the will to succumb to her depression. When decides to go to the beach on a double date, the thought of drowning herself profoundly crossed her mind. As she was swimming in the ocean she thought: that drowning must be the kindest way to die...but as I paddled on, my heartbeat boomed like a dull motor in my ears, I am, I am, I am (Plath 157 158). They are imagined because members will never meet all other members face to face. The Morgan piece on speech communities begins by describing a music video, which itself begins with two rappers speaking on the phone in different languages in different countries. After a conversation, the two meet up in person and begin the song. Morgan describes this as a speech community formed around a shared style of music, with members of the community belonging to various demographics. This would fit Anderson s model of imagined communities as the community is formed around a shared consumption of a form of media with members who will never interact with most other members. Anderson s model is primarily criticized for two reasons: it is too vertical and it ignores hierarchy within communities. 2. A Technopoly (a word postman capitalizes throughout the book) is a society that no longer merely uses technology as a support system but instead is shaped by it. Postman proposes that we become loving resistance fighter(s) who retain the narratives and symbols that once made the United States the hope of the world (p.182). Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In chapter 11 Postman gives examples of people who resist the American Technopoly. An example of a resistance fighter is a person who ignores a poll unless they know the questions asked and why. As Postman introduced in chapter 8 ( Invisible Technologies ), the form of a question can produce many different answers. It may also restrict us from seeing solutions to problems that may become visible through a question worded differently. Postman shares the story of two priests who write the Pope asking if it was allowable to smoke and pray at the same time. One priest phrased the question Is it permissible to smoke while praying? and the response was no because praying should be the focus of ones attention; the other priest asked Is it permissible to pray while smoking? and the response was yes, since it is always appropriate to pray. The opinion of almost any issue is a function of the question asked. In the American Technopoly the opinion poll is a strict yes or no answer to an unexamined question. One is therefore unable to share their knowledge and is easily mislead to answer a question in a certain way. Another example of a resistance fighter is a person who does not allow psychology or any social science to pre empt the language and thought of common sense. This example clearly relates to chapter 9 ( Scientism ), in which Postman expresses his annoyance of the many people who have a strong ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
