This document provides an overview of kidney anatomy and function. The kidney has two main roles - purifying the blood and expelling urine. It has a bean shape and is located in the abdominal cavity behind the muscles. The kidney contains a cortex on the outer part with micro filters, a medulla on the inner part with collecting ducts, and pyramids where the ducts open. Renal arteries carry blood into the kidney while renal veins carry blood out, and urine is collected in the pelvis before exiting through the ureters to the bladder.
