The Strategic Education Initiatives (SEI) at MIT's Office of Digital Learning nurtures and manages educational experiments that advance MIT's strategic priorities and mission of digital learning. SEI works with universities, foundations, non-profits, and countries to collaborate on projects and further the field of digital learning. SEI partners with MIT faculty, students, and alumni to leverage MIT's digital learning assets like MITx, OpenCourseWare, and pedagogical approaches for experiments both on campus and with outside partners in areas like universities, community colleges, K-12 education, and new technologies.

This paper presents concepts and experiences on integrating MOOCS into traditional higher education in Romania. Three study cases on integrating MOOCs in courses at undergraduate and Master level present and discuss the opportunities in different pedagogical concepts as flipped classroom. These activities require the acquisition of new skills by students and teachers. Advantages and limitations on using this educational model from concepts to management and technology indicate the challenges that lay ahead of educators who are willing to include MOOCs in their everyday teaching activities.

Academics working on online, blended and technology enhanced programmes and modules can oftentimes find themselves working in isolation from their teaching colleagues. Focused on providing the optimal student experience and with the usual demands on their time of a full teaching timetable they often don’t have the opportunity to look at emerging trends or technologies within their own discipline or indeed across disciplines.
A community of practice is defined by Wegner-Trayner as "a group of people who share a concern or a passion for something they do, and learn how to do it better as they interact regularly" and in establishing a TEL Community of Practice within WIT it is hoped that colleagues will have a forum to discuss, debate and discover best practice in the areas of online, blended and technology-enhanced learning. The COP will meet regularly with the focus being on community led initiatives and the sharing of and exchange of experiences.
This presentation will focus on the efforts that were taken within WIT on establishing a COP and document the journey taken so far. This has included a number of planning meetings, the publication of a number of staff newsletters, the holding of an end-of-semester showcase day: The Collective: Unexpected, together with a number of other events and activities aimed at building awareness and a sense of community. Accredited and non-accredited staff professional development activities and opportunities were also made available to staff across the institute.
Canvassing of support from Heads of School, Heads of Department and the Institute Executive led to the establishment and support of a COP becoming a key part of the newly drafted strategic plan as one of the actions aimed at improving the quality of the student learning experience.

California Community College Faculty Motivation and Reflection on Open Textbo...Una Daly
Interviews were conducted with twelve faculty members at community colleges in California who adopted open textbooks in their teaching practice for one academic term or longer. The interviews queried faculty on motivation to undertake the adoption, pedagogical considerations, student savings and feedback, and support from other campus stakeholders.
Faculty were asked how their teaching and student learning was affected as a result of adopting an open textbook in their course. Specifically they were asked if they were collaborating more with other faculty members and whether they were now using a wider range of instructional materials in their courses. With regards to student learning, they were asked if they believed that student learning had improved or whether student retention had improved as a result of the adoption of an open and free textbook. Any unanticipated outcomes that had resulted from the adoption either in their own practice or with students was also queried.
In addition to the faculty and students, other stakeholders on campus are often involved in the decision and process to adopt an open textbook. College initiatives or pilot programs to increase access and equity were sometimes the instigators for making the change and other times it was strictly a faculty decision. Library, instructional design, and bookstore staff were other stakeholders who played roles in the adoption process.
Attend this presentation to better understand the motivations of college faculty who adopt open textbooks and how it affected their teaching practice. Hear about the challenges they encountered and any unexpected outcomes. Learn what students had to say about using open textbooks in the classroom and how it affected their learning and ability to be successful.

The butterfly effect: how connecting digital learning materials to the constr...Robert Schuwer
On 1 January 2019, an ambitious program took off to boost innovation of Higher Education in the Netherlands using ICT. The shared ambitions of this program are: better connection to the job market, making education more flexible and learning smarter and better by using technology. The program is divided into 7 areas (zones. In each zone, institutions of HE cooperate to realize these ambitions.
One of the zones is called “Towards digital (open) educational resources”. In this zone, 7 universities and 2 UoAS collaborate to realize the ambition that in 2023, HE institutions in the Netherlands are able to offer teachers and learners the opportunity to determine and use an optimal mix of learning resources. To accomplish this, a.o. improving the technical and organisational infrastructure and enhancing an open infrastructure seamless and transparent with a more closed one is needed. Stimulating the use of open resources is part of the ambition, but open is not considered a dogma in the optimal mix. This is an important difference compared to other programs aiming at stimulating sharing and reuse of OER, treating openness in isolation with non-open resources. We believe that this difference, together with taking the educational vision of the teacher as starting point will widen adoption of open sharing and reuse.
For 2019, the main activity of this zone is to conduct research into the ways students and teachers determine their optimal mix of learning resources and the underlying principles. The results will be the basis for the zone activities in the remaining time of the program. Other activities in 2019 comprise improvements to the available national technical infrastructure and creating awareness among teachers about the opportunities of open pedagogy and open educational practices. In the presentation we will report about the activities and the results of the research.

Bridging the Gap: Mixing approaches, content and tools to help college studentsBrandon Muramatsu
The Next Generation Learning Challenge has provided a call to action for those involved in Open Educational Resources to meet the needs of the US education system. One of the challenges is to deploy open core courseware to address the retention and completion issues in community colleges. In the Open Learning: Bridge to Success (B2S) initiative The Open University working in partnership with MIT, Anne Arundel Community College (AACC) and University of Maryland University College (UMUC) will develop open bridging modules to help learners having problems in coping with credit bearing courses. Modules focussed on learning to learn and understanding mathematics will be released as complete open educational resource packages from The Open University's existing successful programme of entry-level (pre-degree) "Openings" modules. The Open University has an established open presence through its OpenLearn open content site which offers a wide range of units, and the courses will be developed in the open to benefit not only students in the partner institutions but any learners who wish to use them.
The project will run its first pilots with Community College students from September and this presentation focuses on the early phase of the project including: release of the initial materials, augmentation with other OER, design of the research methodology and early lessons from working together as partners. Already working in the open is changing how we think about the provision of content and the instruction of practical experiences alongside meeting curriculum needs. We anticipate presenting the design requirements and how they have been met through open provision, reflections from those involved in the projects, the first feedback from students at the pilot colleges, and the indications from the additional users in the open.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
