Jealousy In A Separate Peace
In the book A Separate Peace, the narrator, Gene, recalls of his friendship he shared with Phineas at
Devon. In the beginning, Phineas and Gene are portrayed as this complimentary companionship in
which both sides helped the other. But as this connection progresses, this sense of jealousy and
resentment floods through Gene in a moment of anger. Throughout the book there are many places in
which their friendship collapses, and in all of these places, it is shown how people, when faced with
envy, act irrationally and often cause resentment and bitterness. This is shown when Gene and Phineas
are at the tree, about to jump off the tree together. This moment should have been one that would
strengthen their friendship, but in a turn of events, Gene made Phineas fall by jouncing the limb
beneath Finny. During ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Upon coming back, he describes the school as sedate and Preserved , and how he felt that the school
was like that to him, only serving as a museum of all his experiences at Devon (Knowles 9 10). He
feels all of those moments and memories were saved only to remind him of his brutal actions that he
had committed during his time. One major place he visited while coming back fifteen years later was
the tree. When he sees the tree he describes it as enfeebled , and how it was similar, yet different, that
Nothing endures, not a tree, not love, not even death by violence , which shows how at that tree there
were negative thoughts tied to it, and how even the seemingly resilient can be torn down by time
(Knowles 14). It challenges how together Gene and Finny were this dominant force, and yet as time
progressed, they lost that, becoming weaker and and eroded by their progression. The tree was a
metaphor of the relationship between Phineas and Gene, strong and resilient, but after Finny s death,
indirectly caused by Gene, now only enfeebled and

Three Varieties of Knowledge- a Critque Essay
Donald Davidson Three Varieties of Knowledge
Submitted By: Nathan Copeland 500349268

In Donald Davidsons Three Varieties of Knowledge, he sets out to more or less prove that A
community of minds is the basis of knowledge; it provides the measure of all things. (Davidson, 218).
This is done by first categorizing knowledge into three distinct categories. There is knowledge of ones
own mind, knowledge of another s mind, and knowledge of the shared physical world around us. He
argues that no one could exist without the others. According to Davidson, knowledge of ones own
mind differs from the other two types of knowledge in the sense that one knows the contents of their
own mind ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
(Davidson, pg. 217)
Davidson then goes on to say that knowledge of the propositional contents of our own minds is not
possible without the other forms of knowledge, since there is no propositional thought without
communication (Davidson, pg. 213). Furthermore, knowledge of others cannot be inferred unless we
have knowledge of ourselves, as the process of coming to know another s mind is done by matching
evidence from others behaviour to our knowledge of our own, thus showing that knowledge of our
own minds and others is also mutually dependent.
He acknowledges that there are a great deal of possible ways that we could assign our native language
to the language and behavior of another to come about an understanding. He relates this to the
measurement of weight in the sense that no matter what system you use for measurement; kilograms,
pounds ounces, etc., the invariable factor, in this case the actual weight of the object, is the fact of the
matter, not the arbitrary units of measure. His point is that there will likely always be indeterminacy in
our translations, but we will often get the general idea. He also believes that there are no strict laws
that connect mental states with physical ones, stating that such laws can exist only when concepts
connected by the laws are based on criteria of the same sort (Davidson, pg. 215).
This all leads to the fact that we will never be able to agree on how sentences and thoughts should be

Global Perspectives Signature Assignment: The Distribution of Income within and among Nations
161026
Based on three graphs from Piketty (2014)
Questions 1 4 refer to Piketty s Figure 9.8
1. The variable measured on the vertical axis of Figure 9.8 is the share of total income received by the
highest decile. What does the term, highest decile, mean in the context of this graph?
The term highest decile means the richest 10% of the population.
2. Does this graph provide information about the distribution of income among social classes within a
nation (or region, in the case of Europe), or about the distribution of income among nations or
regions?
This graph provides information ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He puts a question mark at the end of the phrase to make people question if it s truly possible for
countries like Asia and Africa to have the same GDP as the rest of the world.
Questions 11 13 pertain to Piketty s explanation of the data presented in Figure 9.8
11. What does Piketty think happens to the distribution of income and wealth if market forces are
allowed to operate without government intervention?
Market forces that are left to follow a natural path without government intervention, lead to an even
greater inequality. The rate of return investment is greater than the rate of GDP, which means the rich
control more of the economy.
12. What forces, in Piketty s view, fostered the movement towards greater equality and the creation of
mass prosperity during the mid 20th century in the wealthy democracies?
World War One and World War Two, The Great Depression, Union Rights, and Labor Corporations
fostered the movement towards greater equality and the creation of mass prosperity.
12. Describe Piketty s views about globalization and its effect on income distribution among social
classes in Europe and the United

The Roles Of Latinas On Television
The main purpose of this paper was to research the roles of Latinas in television. More specifically,
how Latinas are represented within the television industry. The study consisted of a content analysis of
three television programs from the years 2015 2017. A procedure was employed and seven characters
were selected. The categories that were used in the study were based on the character s ethnicity and
gender, but the variables were developed based on previous research. The results have revealed that
there s a slight change, however, Latinas continue to be underrepresented and negative stereotyped.
Introduction
The representation of Latinas in Television is far from mirroring the presence of Latinos in the United
States. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The two theories that the researcher will look at that fit into this research are Cultivation theory and
Agenda setting theory.
Cultivation Theory
Many people might say that prime time network programming is responsible for the way people
perceive the different situations in the real world. The theory the researcher will discuss began as a
way to test the impact that all this television viewing had on viewers (West Turner p. 421). In the late
1960s, George Gerbner developed the Cultivation Theory which later on evolved over time through
the use of mass media. Through this theory is a television based theory, its assumptions and processes
can be applied to the representation of Latinas in the media.
Cultivation Theory is being used not just in the United States, but all around the world. This theory
just like other theories is applied daily because society is constantly watching television to educate
themselves on what s happening around the world. One of the reasons why this theory can be applied
by anyone, it s because It asks people to assess their own media use alongside the socially constructed
reality of the world they inhabit (West Turner p. 435). According to George Gerbner, cultivation
theory says that as time passes more people in the real world of television are easier to believe that
social reality resembles the

False Facts About False Beliefs
Question 1: When something cannot be confirmed or is false, and is considered to be negative proof,
this is called The Socratic Method. False beliefs can be eliminated using this particular method. The
form of an argument is based on the purpose of a proposed hypothesis, then to see if the expected
implications materialize. If the hypothesis does not appear to materialize, it is considered wrong.
Therefore, if the hypothesis were true, the expected implications would not have followed.
A quote from Socrates states: If I could only find a man wiser than myself then I might go to the god
with a refutation in my hand. Socrates found that he was more knowledgeable then these men and
never did he presume to be more knowledgeable than he was. He recognized that he was more
knowledgeable but realized the point when he did not know something. The hypothesis would be for
him to find someone more knowledgeable than himself and when this did not materialize, the
hypothesis would have to be discarded.
Throughout various Socratic works, this theme is re occurring. As oppose to just satisfying ones
immediate desires, one must be virtuous. According to the will of the gods, life, which is well lived,
prosperous and long, is not necessarily a good life.
Simply he using this concept towards his prosecution manifests the Socratic Method into Plato s
dialogue, the Euthyphro. He used this concept towards ethical matters. It was first suggested
throughout the Euthyphro that

The Feminist Scarlet Letter
The Scarlet Letter can easily be seen as an early feminist piece of work. Nathaniel Hawthorne created
a story that exemplifies Hester as a strong female character living with her choices, whether they were
good or bad, and also as the protagonist. He also presents the daughter of Hester, Pearl, as an
intelligent female, especially for her age. He goes on to prove man as imperfect through both the
characters of Dimmesdale and of Chillingworth. With the situation that all the characters face,
Hawthorne establishes the female as the triumphant one, accomplishing something that, during
Nathaniel Hawthorne s time, authors did not attempt. In the beginning of the book, Hawthorne paints
the picture of a female named Hester who has sinned. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

reasoning for such elaborate stitching, but Hawthorne suggest the fact that she understands why she
must wear it and accepts that she has sinned and must pay for her sins. He depicts a female who is not
weak and who does not runs away from her problems and mistakes, but one who accepts them. She
does the same with her daughter Pearl by dressing her in elaborate garments, strictly against
Puritanical beliefs. Hester also proves herself to be a strong female character when she does not leave
the town and attempt to start a new life elsewhere, void of her scarlet letter . It may seem marvelous,
that this woman should still call that place her home, where, and where only, she must needs be the
type of shame . (pg. 72) Hawthorne goes on to state that Hester is drawn to the home because of the
events. She knows that the town is the scene of her guilt, and [there] should be the scene of her earthly
punishment . (pg. 72) Hester is a female who is she is strong and caring, helping anyone she can when
he or she are in need. She leads a pious life, and although she could retain all that she earns, she gives

to the afflicted . (pg. 142) Nathaniel Hawthorne almost all ways personifies Hester as a powerful

How Did Volkswagen Change Canada
ast night, the headline in a prominent German paper read that the Volkswagen compliance chief, Mrs.
Hohmann Dennhardt, will receive 12 million euro payout for quitting her job that was to run until the
end of 2018. She had been hired to clean up Volkswagen s damaged image brought about by diesel
emissions scandal. A challenging undertaking with millions of disgruntled customers spread across the

The Canadian innovation commercialization program was developed in 2012 (Government Services
Canada, 2017). To develop leadership and talent for innovation, the think tank also suggested a
national learning strategy to raise the average competency level of Canadians. This policy suggestion
has not been put into action which may give support to the forum discussion, where it was suggested
that countries are shifting their educational responsibility towards greater privatization and
commercialization (Regmi, 2017, February 1). By handing over educational responsibilities to
commercial forces, Canada may evade the long established responsibility of OECD countries to
follow fundamental educational values based on social justice and equality (Brown Tannok, 2009). At
a local level and as an educator and parent, I see no indication that schooling is preparing students for
innovation and creativity. Even when influenced by constructivist or universal design ideas, school
tasks starting in elementary school, up until CEGEP are generally highly structured, predictable and
offered in cookie cutter format. There is little room for creativity and few subjects are regularly
offered, such as music or visual arts, that support creativity and out of the box thinking to allow for a
more well rounded approach to education as suggested in the discussion forum (Hector,

Genetics And Genomics Case Study
Genetics and Genomics
1. Identify a genetic disease or disorder.
Stroke is often related to other genetic diseases or disorders. Stroke occurs by blood flow being
interrupted to the brain by either a clot or a bleed on the brain. The brain cells die quickly if blood
flow is blocked (Centers of Disease Control and Prevention, 2016a). Ischemic stroke occurs when
blood flow is blocked by clots or particles (CDC, 2016a). Hemorrhagic stroke occurs when the brain
has a bleed from blood vessels bursting (CDC, 2016a). Stroke can leave individuals with deficits and
dependent on others for care. Stroke can cause death.

Going to the hospital as soon as signs or symptoms is notice is the key to stroke treatment (CDC,
2017). Tissue plasminogen activator (TPA) can be used for ischemic stroke if arrival to the hospital is
within three hours of the first symptoms. Medicine, surgery, and rehabilitation can also be used for
treatment of stroke (CDC, 2017).
5. What are the causes or risk factors related to this disease or disorder?
Risk factors for having a stroke is often related to underlying diseases or disorders. High blood
pressure, elevated cholesterol, heart disorders, diabetes, prior stroke, and sickle cell disease are risk
factors for a stroke (CDC, 2017b). Lifestyle choices such as unhealthy diet, obesity, physical
inactivity, tobacco, and too much alcohol can also increase the risk for having a stroke (CDC, 2017a).
Genes passed on from family members, genetic disorders, age, sex, race, and ethnicity can also
increase the risk for stroke (CDC, 2016b).
6. Who is most commonly affected by this disease or disorder?
All races, ethnicity, and sex are susceptible to strokes. African Americans are at greater risk for stroke.

Technological Advancements During The First World War
A nation s ability to fight a modern war is as good as its technological ability. An English inventor
who was of great importance in the invention of the turbojet said these words. I partly agree with him,
as technology is the basis of most aspects of war. If a nation were to fight a war without the use of
technology it would fight with sticks and stones. Technological innovations in the First World War
(WW1) have led to much of the technology that we have today, ranging form the various weapons
modern armies are equipped with to the radios used for communication. If something is significant
then it has an important influence on a thing, such as an event, that will happen in the future. In this
way, did the technological innovations in WW1, such as gas, communications and the machine gun,
not only have an effect on the outcome of the war but also have an effect on how our world is shaped
today?
One technological innovation of the war was the use of poison gases, such as mustard gas. The use of
gas in WW1 was initially of huge importance as it was thought to be the weapon to break the
stalemate. During the war, Gas was a horrific weapon, which had the capability to inflict life
endangering injuries, but as the war drew on, the technology for preventing its effects, such as gas
masks, were invented and improved. Gas in the latter parts of the war was not released from canisters
but was fired in gas filled artillery shells, which led to more accurate and devastating

Telephone Conversation By Soyinka
Wole Soyinka s Telephone Conversation is an eloquent exchange of dialogue between a dark West
African man and his British landlady that inexorably verges on the question of apartheid. The poet
makes use of the most articulate means to air his views, through that of a telephone conversation,
where there is instant and natural give and take. It exhibits a one to one correspondence between the
two. The interaction between a coloured and a white individual at once assumes universal overtones.
At the outset, the poet says that the price seemed reasonable and the location indifferent . Note that as
a word, even though the word indifferent denotes being unbiased , it is a word with negative
connotations. However, as we come across the Landlady s biased nature; the word indifferent gains
positive overtones, as it is better than being impartial. The lady swears that she lived off premises .
Nevertheless, the very aspect of his colour poses a problem to her, far from her promise to remain
aloof. Nothing remains for the poet, he says, but confession. It gives a picture of him sitting in a
confessional, when he hasn t committed any crime....his crime is his colour, his remorse is
solutionless. He ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Symbols And Themes In The Scarlet Ibis By James Hurst
How Pride Can Affect Brothers Pride is a feeling of deep pleasure or satisfaction from one s own
achievements. Brother always wanted a brother who he could play with and do other brotherly things
with. Brother was very disappointed and embarrassed by his little brother Doodle because he Is not all
there. He taught Doodle how to walk, swim, run etc. So he would not have to be as embarrassed of
him. In the story, The Scarlet Ibis by James Hurst, the theme is pride can make something better or
worse through symbolism and foreshadowing.
To begin with, pride can make something better or worse with symbolism in multiple ways in this
story. One of the examples is the color red. When the people hear the color red, the reader might think
of blood and death. This is exactly how it was used in the story. Right when doodle was born,
everyone thought he was going to die because his disabilities, so when Brother saw Doodle for the
first time he described him. Doodle said, He seemed all head, with a tiny body which was red and
shriveled like an old man s. ( Hurst 1) This quote shows symbolism with the word red. They started
talking about red whenever they are speaking about death. Brother described Doodle with a red and
shriveled body when he was born because Doodle wasn t suppose to survive. It relates to the theme
because Brother had so much pride in having a little brother at first. The color red kept appearing in
Doodles life until eventually it appeared for the final time

Dr. R. Harriet Beecher Stowe, Abraham Lincoln And Many...
When learning about the topic of slavery in school you hear of names like Harriet Tubman, Fredrick
Douglas, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Abraham Lincoln and many others I have not listed. I am not taking
anything away from these brave men and women and their courageous works to end the cruelty of
slavery and how they suffered but there are some who go unmentioned and their stories are left untold.
Have you ever heard of a gentleman named Solomon Northup? Most people have not nor his story and
experience with slavery. Solomon Northup was a free black man living in Saratoga Springs, New
York. Northup had a wife and three children he loved greatly. Solomon was a very busy man, he
worked long hours on a farm. Northup was an educated man who enjoyed reading books and playing
his violin in his spare time. (Northup 1 10) One day two strangers approached Northup and asked if he
would like to join them to perform in a town miles away. Solomon agrees to join these white men on
their journey to perform. Little did Solomon know that these men were in a business where they
capture free and escaped black men to make money. Beginning in 1793, congress passed the first
Fugitive Slave Act which allowed local governments to return escaped slaves back to their rightful
owners. (Histroy.com) This law was one of the many slave laws that brought much controversy to the
nation as it was expanding westward and asking how slavery would work in the new states and if it
would even be allowed.

What Is The Mood Of The Count Of Monte Cristo
Just like every great story The Count of Monte Cristo has its own particular and mesmerizing settings.
Alexandre Dumas not only amazes us with breathtaking and exotic places but he also takes us to the
darkest and goriest corners that you could ever imagine, places that could even alter the emotional
state of the strongest man. This novel begins at a French seaside town called Marseilles, Edmond s
hometown and home for all his loved ones and all his enemies. The Chateau d If is a prison
completely surrounded by water which is really conventional since it makes it impossible for the
prisoners to escape from it. This is the place where our main character spent fourteen years of his life

being a fictional setting, this place is one of the most important ones in the whole book. This is the

Ram directly behind their beater car. The man in the passenger seat of the Dodge pulls out a gun and
fires. Nervously, Octavio and Jorge duck. A school bus suddenly pulls up in front of their car.
Breaking abruptly, the bloody dog tumbles to the base of the car, and Octavio is able to flee the scene.
The Dodge is nowhere in sight. Octavio and Jorge shriek with excitement. They run a red light.
Another car suddenly appears from a corner, striking the two by surprise; and violently crashes into
the side of their car, initiating a brutal collision of destruction, flames, and blood a great deal of blood.
The striking collision opens the scene to Alejandro Inarritu s Mexican thriller, Amores Perros (2000).
This crash presents the link to three unrelated narratives that are symbolically tied together by the
chaotic lifestyle of the modern day metropolis of Mexico City. Amores Perros is an enthralling film
that captures the socio political themes regarding economic instability, social class, and gender in
contemporary Mexico City. Mexico City throughout the twentieth century was undergoing major
urbanization (Connolly). As a result, the overwhelming influx of new inhabitants brought about
economic chaos due to overpopulation, political disorder, and a distinct social class stratum

Benefits Of Hiking Shoes
BEST HIKING SHOE BRANDS
Humans started wearing shoes more than 40000 years ago. Some old Spanish cave drawings show
humans wearing animal skin or fur around their feet. Shoes have been around, in different forms, for a
very long time. Sandals were the most primitive form of footwear, however some older civilizations
preferred wearing the shoes that were soft and were used for hiking on borders of Iran. However some
of the ancient civilizations like Egypt didn t wear shoes due to their suitable climatic and landscape
situations. The Romans saw footwear as a symbol of status and power and their slaves remained
barefoot. Then high heeled shoes were introduced in the Middle Ages which were also associated with
power and status. In some cultures, people removed their shoes to show respect to some other person.
So most of the religious communities required people to remove their shoes ... Show more content on

The World Trade Center Movie Review
Julie Johnson CRISIS 302 B04 Liberty University Movie Review Submission Date: February 16,
2015 The movie The World Trade Center begins with showing the audience how an average day might
begin for residents of New York City. As the sun is coming up over the city subways are busy getting
people to work, streets are jammed with traffic and your everyday noises of the city are heard. The
movie quickly puts its focus on the civil servants that are getting ready for what they think is just

Deafening silence has now replaced the chaos and the atmosphere is sobering. The rest of the movie
focuses on Officer Jimeno and Sgt. McCloughlin being buried in the rubble of the towers. Both
officers are immobilized about twenty feet apart. The scenes of them conversing are quite dramatic
and very personal. It feels as if the viewer is right there with them experiencing the darkness that they
are in. These two men in a sense, even though they are pinned, are able to be a crisis interventionist to
each other providing encouragement in their words and driving each other to survive the ordeal until
they are rescued. The movie put most of its focus on the two officers buried in the rubble and also that
of their families. There was little shown of the people who escaped the towers in need of crisis
intervention. It really does not take much more than those few scenes to know the magnitude of the
devastation that was affecting anyone in and around the buildings. To bring any kind of order and or
provide a sense of stabilization to those traumatized by the event, it will take skilled interventionists
with knowledge, strength and the right resources. One thing that is of crucial importance when trying
to alleviate a crisis is timing. It is very important that crisis interventionist be available as soon after a

Active Crime Scene Analysis
While working as a funeral director and coroner transport, I have been on hundreds of death

Anselm Kiefer Was A German Artist Who Was Born Directly...
Anselm Kiefer was a German artist who was born directly after World War II. The art that Kiefer
created focused on a reconciliation with the shame and horror surrounding the holocaust, aimed aimed
to redefine what it meant to be German in a post Nazi World (Smith). The piece I studied is located at
the MoMa in San Francisco and is entitled Shulamite . Shulamite is a historical painting of a Nazi
Memorial Site, which Kiefer created it in 1983. In this painting, Kiefer transformed the architecture of
a site which was meant to honor Nazi heroes into a memorial for their victims. Kiefer uses some very
interesting aesthetic techniques to reflect the intense emotions of that time and to reflect the rage,
grief, and shame that Germans felt in response to the Holocaust. His intention was to reconcile with
the country s dark past through memorializing the persecuted while painting the country as no longer
representative of it s dark past.
The piece displays a cavernous interior with a series of dark arches that recede towards some
flickering flames. These huge bricks and arches make the hall resemble a sort of dungeon or a sort of
oven. The palette he used is limited to solely to shades of black, and brown. White paint is used to
outline the crevices and edges of the bricks. The windows are dark black, and the ceiling is pitched
black. The dimly lit piece seems to be an interior space solely lit by the series of small flames, and
these flames are placed at a

How Is Harrison Bergeron A Dystopian Society
Imagine if we were equal in all ways. Think about being exactly the same in all aspects; the same
haircut, intelligence level, the same routine everyday over and over again. In the short story Harrison
Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegut, it shows us the theme of equality through a futuristic dystopian society,
which can relate to the society we live in today. In the dystopian society, Harrison is an athlete and is
extremely intelligent. He tries to be above equal, therefore he is considered to be extremely dangerous.
Although equality may seem to be a necessary component in a modern progressive society, forced
equality could be harmful to itself by eliminating competition, individuality, and motivation.

Individuality is what makes everyone different, without it we wouldn t be who we are today. Above
all, individuality is what makes us unique. It s what sets us apart from everyone else. Everyone
deserves a chance to express themselves. In the story Harrison Bergeron, it says that the ballerinas,
...were masked so that no one, seeing a free and graceful gesture or a pretty face... (Vonnegut 5)The
main reason that the ballerinas had to wear masks was to eliminate the felling of them making people
feel unequal because they weren t as beautiful as the ballerinas. Another example of individuality
would be the story of Talia Joy. Talia was diagnosed with two types of cancer, neuroblastoma and
leukemia. Due to the cancers, she lost her hair and her hair was what made her feel beautiful. After her
diagnosis, she found another way to express her beauty. The way that she had learned was to express
herself through her makeup. She once said, Make up is my wig. Since she was unable to express her
beauty and individuality through her hair anymore, she directed it through another form, her makeup.
Take pride in what makes you different; individuality is what makes you different form the rest.
(Unknown) Whoever was the author of this quote was most certainly right. Our differences are what

Summary Of The Revenge Of Autobiographical Rap By Kendrick...
An autobiography is a history of a person s life written or told by that person. When most of us think
of an autobiography we think about the stories of political figures or well known celebrities. We are
interested in the events that shaped their lives and can even be inspired by the way they handled
themselves or how they achieved their goals. There are many examples of this through music and the
hip hop genre is no exception. The article, The Revenge of Autobiographical Rap , points out that
there are many albums that do just that. Jason Parham sites such albums as Kendrick Lamar s good

When I listen to this music I feel as though the artist is speaking to me personally and telling me their

we discussed earlier I can appreciate the inspirational message each one conveys. My personal
favorite of the three artists is Kendrick Lamar. I find him to be a more relatable artist and I enjoy his
music. In good kid, m.A.A.d. city, he talks about how his parents were always telling him what to do
and who to hang out with. In the end, even after making mistakes, his parents were always there for
him and they were proud of the man he has become. My parents are similar to his. They have opinions
about everything I do. And, up to now I have not done everything the way they would have liked. I
have made my own mistakes. But, my parents have taught me to be a good person and I know that
they will always be there for me. Kendrick Lamar s album depicting his life experiences is inspiring to
me. I can work hard to make something of myself and I will have people around me that will support

She describes Mandan s migration, their daily life, and the cultural characteristics of Manda, such as
festivals, as well as the pathogens of the society from hundreds of year ago. However, because
Mandan always welcome foreign immigrants and it had succeeded in international commercial status
because of these immigrant traders and explorers who brought businesses to Mandan, they also
brought disease. In 1991 , when they first suffered a smallpox injury, Mandan s life changed. The
Mandan comprised approximately 13 clans after the plague there were seven. This led to the decline
of Mandan. It is resulting in the spread of colonial disease, especially when those diseases such as
smallpox, measles, and pertussis were in the wave of epidemics outbreaks and repeated outbreaks of
toxic diseases. This was one of the main reasons for the fading of Mandan. These colonial diseases
from the outside destroyed Mandan step by step.
Fenn described Mandan through archeology, anthropology, geology, climatology, epidemiology, and
other important findings of Mandan and linked these to review their history. The disease and
motorboat are the main reasons for the decline of Mandan. Fenn bemoans that the result for the
Mandan people is a tragedy. As Fenn said, the Mandan people had their own unique tradition, but that
no longer exists, because it is interspersed with international history of the heat of the world of
international events.

Students Can t or Won t ? Can t or Won t: The Culture of Helplessness article by Lori Isbell was about
how students always find a way to expand instructions and make the teachers have the responsibility.
Isbell started off with a story about one of her students who asked her a stupid question.
It was a stupid question because the student had the book which had the name of the author on the
front cover. Although, in the defence of the student it can be really stressful writing an essay ,so it may

Dr. Pepper TEN the Manliest Low Calorie Soda in the History of Mankind. This slogan is displayed at
the end of every Dr. Pepper TEN commercial. During these commercials a man is shown outdoors

commercial is short and simple this man is manly and he drinks Dr. Pepper TEN because of its bold
flavor but when viewed under other lenses questions arise: How are the ideas of bold flavor and
manliness expressed in the commercial and how are they connected to the low calorie soda?
The correlation between the bold flavor with low calories and the manliness ensued is one of

advancing. This pushed for masculinity to be that of a very technical idea. On the other side at the
time of the Dr. Pepper TEN commercial society had reached an understanding of the complex

this and redefined manliness as that of getting in touch with the simpler side of technology by means

Fuel Your Muscles Essay
Fuel Your Muscles with Amino Acids
If you are trying to build up your body and help boost your athletic performance, you need more than
just time in the gym. Amino acids should be added to any serious athlete s routine if you want to
provide your body with what it needs in order to build stronger, more powerful muscles. Your muscles
store fatty acids, glucose, as well as amino acids from protein and all three are used as energy and fuel
during exercise. However, in order to help preserve muscle mass, your muscles will burn off fatty
acids and glucose first before it uses amino acids as fuel. Used as your last line of defense, amino
acids are used as a building block for new muscle. When your muscles are consistently contracting it

Alfred Hitchcock Blackmail Essay
Early forms of creative filmmaking such as German Expressionism and Soviet montage theory are

Alfred Hitchcock s Blackmail. This essay will determine whether the most frequently viewed mode of

In 1929, Hitchcock released Blackmail, the first all talkie film from Great Britain. Although the film
was not produced in Hollywood, it is still considered as Hollywood cinema as it exhibits the stylistic
traits identified in The Classical Hollywood Cinema. These devices include linear timelines, unstable
equilibriums, psychologically motivated characters, shot/reverse shot, continuity editing and three
point lighting. Furthermore, this supports the perspective that there is a definitive history of
Hollywood cinema. Blackmail fits within the time period of Hollywood cinema, whilst also displaying
the forms narrative and cinematography techniques. However, Blackmail also mimics prominent
features associated with German Expressionism and Soviet Montage, such as mise en scene, dramatic
lighting and shadows. In one scene in Blackmail, Hitchcock manipulates the use of shadows when an
Artist, sexually assaults a young woman called Alice. He stands in his room after being refused a kiss,
coated in the shadows of the set looming over his face. The prominent use of shadows, create a
visually uneasy atmosphere and convey a narrative without dialogue. Hitchcock s use of shadow
manipulation is comparable to the importance of shadows in many famous German Expressionist
films, Nosferatu (1922) and The Cabinet of Dr Caligari (1920). Hitchcock himself stated that he had
acquired a strong German influence by working at the UFA studios in Berlin . Therefore, it can be
argued that Hollywood cinema does not have a definitive history. The examples Bordwell and
Thompson use in Film History: An Introduction supports the perspective within one form of history,
Hollywood cinema. However, it is evident that some films which fit perfectly within the Hollywood
cinema definition, include traits of German Expressionism. The film history is blurred and not

Social Cohesion And Its Effects On Society
Individuals create friendships, bonds, and relationships in society to strengthen not only that
individual s social cohesion, but the social cohesion of the collective community. Social cohesion is
used to maintain the structure and integrity of a society. There are many aspects of society which draw
individuals and groups, either closer, or further away from other individuals or groups. However,
many times social cohesion depends heavily on the act of inclusion and exclusion of certain
individuals from a given society or community. Exclusion or inclusion depends greatly on financial
status and resources an individual has. In recent years researchers have seen variant decreases in social
cohesion, and have seen governments take action in order to prevent the downfall. In general, social
cohesion is created through means of communication amongst a society, along with the relationships,
connections, and bonds formed within the society (Berger Schmitt, 2002, p. 405). However, it goes
much deeper than just purely relations formed within communities, social cohesion in itself has a lot
to do with economic status and the ability to obtain and access resources required to be able to partake
in society and maintain subjective well being (Klein, 2011, p. 900). Examples of resources that may
strengthen social cohesion are; access to improved healthcare or education, access to community
centres, parks, public events, and employment. Access to proper resources can bring communities

larger mat. It was probably for one on one training, she thought, like the boxing ring in Seattle. Her

The Issue Of Gun Violence
Gun Violence
Guns have been is society for centuries. They have been used for hunting, war, and even safety.
However, in the past several years they have begun to take the lives of many innocent victims, often
young children. In response to the killings in Newtown, Conn., it has been noted, If this were a
country, the number of children killed by gun violence would violate international law. (Browne
Marshall) F.B.I. data shows in 2011, 1,668 African American children were killed due to guns. Day by
day gun violence is rising and it is not only in ghetto neighborhoods.
It has spread to the suburbs and small towns. Gun violence rates have increased in the last decade due
to hatred and societal issues, and while shooters and victims both face many difficult obstacles, there
are some solutions that the public and schools can enforce through awareness.
One major cause of Gun Violence is hatred, which can lead to many different outcomes. These
outcomes can either have a good affect on some or a negative. For example, Getting caught and now
having a criminal record. Some may learn from this and never commit another crime. The rest on the
other hand can be more raged when released from jail. This will cause them to escalate down the same
path as before. These people are causing the same problems to society as before. Therefore they are a
living threat to everyone around them.
Another cause of gun violence is social

Summary Of The Record Of The Peach Blossom Spring By Tao...
In the 4th century, there was a story about a fisherman. After an exhausting day, he accidentally
encountered a lovely stream full of peach trees on the shores. He followed the trace of the water, and
entered an extremely narrow cave. Yet, when he eventually walked through the tunnel, the scene he
saw stunned him:
After walking another twenty or thirty paces, he suddenly exited onto an open clearing. The land
became flat and broad. Houses were neatly arranged in rows. There were fertile fields, beautiful
ponds, mulberry trees, bamboo groves and the like. Pathways crisscrossed the fields, and one could
hear the intermingled sounds of chickens and dogs. There were people walking back and forth,
busying themselves with planting crops. The clothing of the men and women was unlike anything he
had ever seen. Old and young alike seemed happy and contented. (Tao Yuanming, The Record of the
Peach Blossom Spring, excerpt of the 2nd paragraph)
What an ideal life of retreat! Deep in the unknown mountain range hidden a traditional village with
pleasant scenery, careful orderliness, empowered productivity, and most importantly, happy residents.
The author of the ancient text, Tao Yuanming, was himself a reclusive figure who quit his
governmental post in exchange of a peaceful rural life in which he was able to interact harmoniously
with nature and his own spirit. Under his pen, a village with an idealized beauty protrudes a sense of
nature and a landscape that was shaped by people in a

Visiting Phantom Bodies
Art 1010 Art Appreciation
Visiting Phantom Bodies at the Frist Center for the Visual Arts (919 Broadway) was one of the most
thrilling experiences I have experienced in the recent past. The exhibition provided me with an
excellent opportunity to view countless works of art by a wide range of artists, an opportunity I
treasure especially because I got to learn a lot from the different works of art available at the center.
Phantom Bodies essentially refers to works of art that take a provocative approach in addressing
themes such as loss, trauma, and transformation, and which aim to demonstrate the possibility that an
animating spirit could potentially exist independently of the body (Frist Center for the Visual Arts
2015). I was most fascinated ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Therefore, the work engages the mind in a lot and this happens because of the powerful impact of
color and texture, which serves to demonstrate emphasis and variety, which also occurs because the
artist has combined them in a perfectly symmetrical manner (John F. Kennedy Center for the
Performing Arts 2014). The thoughts relating to the body are powerful to the reader, and they serve to
remind the audience that death is inevitable and that we all have to face it as some point in our lives.
Therefore, the principles of texture and color trigger remembrance especially because of the numerous
repetitions that help to create balance, unity, harmony, and symmetry (Sayre 2012).
I find this painting to be quite appealing because it evokes many thoughts and emotions relating to the
mind, body, and the soul. More importantly, I find it very appealing because of its stunning beauty,
which mainly happens because the artist has focused a lot on achieving harmony, unity, balance, and
symmetry, all of which are critical in ensuring excellent art work. The use of butterflies helps to
enhance its appeal. Similarly, the use of different colors and different sizes of butterflies contributes a
lot in creating some form of texture and form that is appealing to the

Use Of Birds In Poetry
The use of nature in poetry and stories has a long history in Ireland going back to the early use of bird
song to describe divine messages. (Melia, 1999). The natural world gives writers the ability to
communicate expression through the use as symbols and Celtic traditions describe how animals and
birds were important parts of society. The use of natural world subjects give a poet such as Oscar
Wilde the inspiration for some of his best works in poetry and short story. Oscar Wilde s use of birds
and how they are used throughout his writings show great examples of the use of the natural world.
The connection to nature in Irish literature can be shown by examining some of Oscar Wilde s most
important works such as The Nightingale and the Rose and The Happy Prince as well as poems such
as Magdalen Walks. Oscar Wilde was an Irish poet who was born in Dublin Ireland and lived from
1854 1900. throughout his life Oscar Wilde wrote many poems and short stories. Some of his most
endearing short stories were fairytales for young children and were told using birds, animals and
nature. Oscar Wilde s descriptive writing style was very beautiful and in the Nightingale and the Rose
describe a bird that ultimately chooses ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Both birds play hero types that ultimately sacrifice everything. (EastoftheWeb, 2015). The swallow in
the Happy Prince is normally a migrating bird but stays with the happy prince in order to make others
happy throughout the city. The swallow does this through sacrifices to jewels in the prince s statue
ending in his eyes. The swallow continues to take the gold plates of the happy prince and acts as his
eyes until ultimately winter kills the bird and the heart of the happy prince and the bird are the only
thing left. The moral is do what is right to your fellow people and you will be recognized by

Analysis Of John KeatsTo Autumn
Journal To Autumn
Observation
In his ode To Autumn, John Keats praises fall as the yielder of abundance and fruitfulness. Throughout
the poem, Keats uses strong imagery to create a beautiful picture of fall. For example, in stanza twenty
five, Keats writes ...barred clouds bloom the soft dying day, and touch the stubble plains with rosy
hue... (Keats 738). Through these words, Keats uses the word bloom, an action associated with
flowers, to describe a fall sunset. This effect makes the readers imagine a sky breaking forth lively in
full bright, rosy colors like flowers. Through this description, the author leads his readers to admire in
awe one of the beauties of fall. Also, Keats describes the activities of autumn through unique
personification. As an illustration, Keats describes fall as conspiring with [the sun] how to load and
bless with fruit the vines that round the that eaves run; as sitting careless on a granary floor , and as
[by a cider press, with patient look, [watching] the last oozing hours by hours (Keats 738). Through
these words, Keats shows the productive and fruitful activities completed in the harvest autumn
season.
Interpretation
Through his poem, John Keats wants to awaken the readers to an appreciation of fall. Towards the end
of the poem, he writes Where are the songs of Spring? Ay, where are they? Think not of them, thou
hast thy music too (Keats 738). Although Fall may seem as the end to the life of spring and summer,
Keats wants people to realize that fall enriches their lives with the ripe fruits, rewarding activities, and
new sights and sounds (Keats 738). Through his description of the beauty, abundance, and rich harvest
that people experience during the fall season, Keats encourages people to accept the blessings of fall
with thankfulness.
Integration
Deuteronomy 16:13 15 states Celebrate the Feast of Tabernacles for seven days after you have
gathered the produce of your threshing floor and your winepress. Be joyful at your Feast... for the
Lord your God will bless you in all your harvest and in all the work of your hands, and your joy will
be complete. Also, in 1 Timothy 4:4 5, Paul writes For everything God created is good, and nothing is
to be rejected...it

Argumentative Essay On Global Citizenship
While the very definition of the term global citizenship may vary, The Global Citizens Initiative has
simplified such profound term into a person who identifies with being part of an emerging world
community and whose actions contribute to building this community s values and practices (Israel,
2012). When looking at citizenship from a worldview, cosmopolitanism and globalization are the two
main factors that are inevitably crucial, as they expand one s perspective to the extent where one
individual form a global link and form a relationship based on shared beliefs and inclusive mutual
respect, which also resulted in interconnectedness and intercultural communication.
Cosmopolitanism is the belief system that every single individual has a place with a solitary group, in
view of a mutual ethical quality. In political phrases, it consists of an ideological function of
awareness and criticism. In sociological phrases, it is far a reconfigured device for members of the
family in a worldwide global (Gonçalves, 2015). To quote Appiah, cosmopolitanisms is an ideology
that can be define as citizen of the world (cited in Brookes, 2006). Moreover, cosmopolitans
additionally agree with that each one human beings come under the same ethical requirements. In the
face of cosmopolitanisms, the limits between nations, states, cultures or societies are therefore morally
inappropriate, as cosmopolitanism indicates a commitment to universal values (Pitty, Stokes Smith,
2008).

Analysis Of Before I Fall
Before I Fall directed by Ry Russo Young and written by Maria Maggenti is a teen drama film
released in 2017 that is about a teenage girl who lives the same day over and over again. Despite
having a compelling lead performance played by Zoe Deutch and a powerful soundtrack full of
ballads, Before I Fall still took a turn with a generic plot line, choppy dialogue and cliché. Although I
loved the performance given by Deutch and how she was able to show the characters development
through emotions and her acting, that still doesn t mean the movie was perfect.
The movie was like Mean Girls put through a time loop. Before I Fall deals with a teenage girl forced

Sam s whole story is that she s a mean girl who realizes that maybe she shouldn t be mean to people.
(by the way it took her too long to figure out that maybe Juliet was the reason she was living the same
day over and over again). The mind irking thing is that she never once told her friends that they should
stop bullying Juliet or try to befriend her. Instead, she presents this half played, pitiful redemption that
leaves the audience thinking that it was an act of heroism (I begged a differ).
There are moments in Before I Fall where the dialogue lacked intelligence. It was almost as if the
director wanted to be quick and get to the point of creating a movie that deals with time loop, and not
think twice about whether the dialogue should make sense. There s a scene in the movie where Sam is
thinking back on the last 24 hours of her life before the car accident where her and the other three girls
are bullying Juliet, and then she says this line That was forever ago... that was yesterday. There were
reasons that the audience watching this film to think okay that doesn t make sense. Saying something
forever ago and that it happened yesterday just contradicts itself, the line I think should have been

Gender Stereotypes In The Ordeal Of Gilbert Pinfold
Gender Stereotypes in The Ordeal Of Gilbert Pinfold In The Ordeal Of Gilbert Pinfold by Evelyn
Waugh, Gilbert Pinfold has plenty of interactions with other characters and exhibits many gender
stereotypes. There is evidence to support this by the way in which Gilbert presents himself to various
characters. His dominance over women for example is evident in his relationship with Margaret.
Gilbert also takes on a challenge of manhood presented by Fosker. Finally Gilbert demonstrates the
men are always right stereotype throughout his interactions with the B.B.C. Therefore, whether it is a
hallucination or a real life encounter Gilbert is constantly seeking appraise and an opportunity to
demonstrate his masculinity. Gilbert and Margaret share a unique relationship throughout the novel.
Margaret serves as Gilbert s most fond hallucination despite having great doubt and confusion towards
Margaret as he is never able to interact with her face to face. It is not until Gilbert is presented with an
opportunity to take her virginity that he shows any interested in her. It is now that Gilbert can truly
feel like a man that he shows any signs of dominance. After receiving an invitation into Gilbert s cabin
Margaret refuses resulting in Gilbert saying, Oh, don t be such a little ass. I ve been sitting here for
goodness knows how long. Come in if you re coming. If you re not, I want to go back to bed. (143).
Gilbert believes that for Margaret it is an honour to sleep with him and Gilbert feels that he should not
have to spend any extra energy than required. This is for multiple reasons such as age. Gilbert is many
years older than Margaret and with that comes a status and power. Gilbert feels as if he is higher than
Margaret and too good to wait even another minute for her to enter the room. He would rather go back
to bed then to spend anymore time waiting for Margaret to come and sleep with him. Another reason
is the simple fact that Margaret is a female. With Margaret being a female Gilbert is given an excuse
to be a jerk throughout the whole situation. This is not the first time Gilbert has demonstrated a lack of
respect towards females. In a prior interaction with Margaret s mother, Gilbert is caught up in the

US-MEXICAN WAR Essay
The U.S. Mexican War was a violent and shattering event for Mexican citizens that lasted from 1846
1848 in what is now the state of Texas. It drastically altered the course of Mexican and American
history for years to come. It occurred because of the unsettled disputes about the borders of newly
annexed Texas. Once the debilitating battle ended, the United States emerged a world power having
acquired more than 500,000 square miles of valuable territory. There are many potentially feasible
explanations on the cause of the war; including, fault laying with American slaveholders for conquest
of Mexico, the war as an American plot and responsibility lying with President Polk of the United
States. However, this paper focuses on the three ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The U.S. soon saw themselves masters of Louisiana, [ready to] spread their snares at once for the rest
of the Floridas, and the province of Texas. Mexico did not know how to handle this migration from the
U.S. as its citizens were still in the midst of the Mexican Revolution. It was the insatiable ambition of
the United States, favored by [Mexican] weakness that was the principle cause of the U.S. Mexican
War. However, soon after the Mexican Republic was formed, it was realized that the U.S. expansion
into Mexico could become a real danger. Mexico had just attained its freedom from Spain in the 1820s
and as such, did not want to fall into another malevolent trap with the U.S., leaving its citizens unsure
on how to proceed without starting a war. This is in part because not all migration was unsolicited
before the annexation of Texas. After Mexico declared its independence from Spain it needed more
settlers to populate the areas of Mexico without many citizens living in its regions. Thus, in order to
ease tensions between the countries a proposal was created that involved U.S. citizens living in Texas
to become citizens of Mexico and pledge allegiance to the Mexican nation. They would become
Catholics and obey the laws of their new nation. However, what was decided on paper and what the
settlers actually did were inconsistent with each other. The settlers were unhappy with the rules of
their new government,

Classroom Behavior Scenarios
The chosen scenario for the final assignment that was chosen was scenario C. The given scenario
stated Jose is a seventh grader who has been escalating all day. His teachers have been able to
deescalate him and manage his behaviors by keeping a close eye and constantly intervening. However,
he has suddenly pushed over a desk and begun to yell and threaten another student. His teachers
remove the other students from the classroom and begin to attempt to deescalate Jose verbally. He

The scenario describes a student who didn t know how to regulate his behaviors and didn t have the
strategies that could help the student deescalate before it would get to the point of being aggressive
and having to be restrained. The student is showing through his aggressive behavior that he doesn t
feel safe in school and could feel as if the teachers were not there to support him due to the restraining
that happens. In the past when I have had experience with students having to be restrained can cause
fear within them and to the people around them. When students get to the point where being restrained
is the only option the student is at the point where they can t comprehend and understand what is
happening around them. Every teacher wants the point of restrain to be the last possibly action but in
order for that strategies need to be implemented prior between the teacher, student, parents,
administration and BCBA. In the past few years, I had worked in a general education classroom that
had three students that would exhibit similar behavior as the students above and with the teacher
working with the BCBA, they began using PBIS in the classroom to help dissolve the issues

  • 2. Jealousy In A Separate Peace In the book A Separate Peace, the narrator, Gene, recalls of his friendship he shared with Phineas at Devon. In the beginning, Phineas and Gene are portrayed as this complimentary companionship in which both sides helped the other. But as this connection progresses, this sense of jealousy and resentment floods through Gene in a moment of anger. Throughout the book there are many places in which their friendship collapses, and in all of these places, it is shown how people, when faced with envy, act irrationally and often cause resentment and bitterness. This is shown when Gene and Phineas are at the tree, about to jump off the tree together. This moment should have been one that would strengthen their friendship, but in a turn of events, Gene made Phineas fall by jouncing the limb beneath Finny. During ... Upon coming back, he describes the school as sedate and Preserved , and how he felt that the school was like that to him, only serving as a museum of all his experiences at Devon (Knowles 9 10). He feels all of those moments and memories were saved only to remind him of his brutal actions that he had committed during his time. One major place he visited while coming back fifteen years later was the tree. When he sees the tree he describes it as enfeebled , and how it was similar, yet different, that Nothing endures, not a tree, not love, not even death by violence , which shows how at that tree there were negative thoughts tied to it, and how even the seemingly resilient can be torn down by time (Knowles 14). It challenges how together Gene and Finny were this dominant force, and yet as time progressed, they lost that, becoming weaker and and eroded by their progression. The tree was a metaphor of the relationship between Phineas and Gene, strong and resilient, but after Finny s death, indirectly caused by Gene, now only enfeebled and ... • 3. Three Varieties of Knowledge- a Critque Essay Donald Davidson Three Varieties of Knowledge Submitted By: Nathan Copeland 500349268 Submitted to: Prof. Checkland PHL550 April 15, 2013 In Donald Davidsons Three Varieties of Knowledge, he sets out to more or less prove that A community of minds is the basis of knowledge; it provides the measure of all things. (Davidson, 218). This is done by first categorizing knowledge into three distinct categories. There is knowledge of ones own mind, knowledge of another s mind, and knowledge of the shared physical world around us. He argues that no one could exist without the others. According to Davidson, knowledge of ones own mind differs from the other two types of knowledge in the sense that one knows the contents of their own mind ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... (Davidson, pg. 217) Davidson then goes on to say that knowledge of the propositional contents of our own minds is not possible without the other forms of knowledge, since there is no propositional thought without communication (Davidson, pg. 213). Furthermore, knowledge of others cannot be inferred unless we have knowledge of ourselves, as the process of coming to know another s mind is done by matching evidence from others behaviour to our knowledge of our own, thus showing that knowledge of our own minds and others is also mutually dependent. He acknowledges that there are a great deal of possible ways that we could assign our native language to the language and behavior of another to come about an understanding. He relates this to the measurement of weight in the sense that no matter what system you use for measurement; kilograms, pounds ounces, etc., the invariable factor, in this case the actual weight of the object, is the fact of the matter, not the arbitrary units of measure. His point is that there will likely always be indeterminacy in our translations, but we will often get the general idea. He also believes that there are no strict laws that connect mental states with physical ones, stating that such laws can exist only when concepts connected by the laws are based on criteria of the same sort (Davidson, pg. 215). This all leads to the fact that we will never be able to agree on how sentences and thoughts should be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Questions 11 13 pertain to Piketty s explanation of the data presented in Figure 9.8 11. What does Piketty think happens to the distribution of income and wealth if market forces are allowed to operate without government intervention? Market forces that are left to follow a natural path without government intervention, lead to an even greater inequality. The rate of return investment is greater than the rate of GDP, which means the rich control more of the economy. 12. What forces, in Piketty s view, fostered the movement towards greater equality and the creation of mass prosperity during the mid 20th century in the wealthy democracies? World War One and World War Two, The Great Depression, Union Rights, and Labor Corporations fostered the movement towards greater equality and the creation of mass prosperity.

More specifically, how Latinas are represented within the television industry. The study consisted of a content analysis of three television programs from the years 2015 2017. A procedure was employed and seven characters were selected. The categories that were used in the study were based on the character s ethnicity and gender, but the variables were developed based on previous research. The two theories that the researcher will look at that fit into this research are Cultivation theory and Agenda setting theory. Cultivation Theory Many people might say that prime time network programming is responsible for the way people perceive the different situations in the real world. The theory the researcher will discuss began as a way to test the impact that all this television viewing had on viewers (West Turner p. 421). In the late 1960s, George Gerbner developed the Cultivation Theory which later on evolved over time through the use of mass media. Through this theory is a television based theory, its assumptions and processes can be applied to the representation of Latinas in the media. Cultivation Theory is being used not just in the United States, but all around the world. This theory just like other theories is applied daily because society is constantly watching television to educate themselves on what s happening around the world. One of the reasons why this theory can be applied by anyone, it s because It asks people to assess their own media use alongside the socially constructed reality of the world they inhabit (West Turner p. 435). According to George Gerbner, cultivation theory says that as time passes more people in the real world of television are easier to believe that social reality resembles the ... • 7. False Facts About False Beliefs Question 1: When something cannot be confirmed or is false, and is considered to be negative proof, this is called The Socratic Method. False beliefs can be eliminated using this particular method. The form of an argument is based on the purpose of a proposed hypothesis, then to see if the expected implications materialize. If the hypothesis does not appear to materialize, it is considered wrong. Therefore, if the hypothesis were true, the expected implications would not have followed. A quote from Socrates states: If I could only find a man wiser than myself then I might go to the god with a refutation in my hand. Socrates found that he was more knowledgeable then these men and never did he presume to be more knowledgeable than he was. He recognized that he was more knowledgeable but realized the point when he did not know something. The hypothesis would be for him to find someone more knowledgeable than himself and when this did not materialize, the hypothesis would have to be discarded. Throughout various Socratic works, this theme is re occurring. As oppose to just satisfying ones immediate desires, one must be virtuous. According to the will of the gods, life, which is well lived, prosperous and long, is not necessarily a good life. Simply he using this concept towards his prosecution manifests the Socratic Method into Plato s dialogue, the Euthyphro. He used this concept towards ethical matters. • 8. The Feminist Scarlet Letter The Scarlet Letter can easily be seen as an early feminist piece of work. Nathaniel Hawthorne created a story that exemplifies Hester as a strong female character living with her choices, whether they were good or bad, and also as the protagonist. He also presents the daughter of Hester, Pearl, as an intelligent female, especially for her age. He goes on to prove man as imperfect through both the characters of Dimmesdale and of Chillingworth. With the situation that all the characters face, Hawthorne establishes the female as the triumphant one, accomplishing something that, during Nathaniel Hawthorne s time, authors did not attempt. She does the same with her daughter Pearl by dressing her in elaborate garments, strictly against Puritanical beliefs. • 12. Technological Advancements During The First World War A nation s ability to fight a modern war is as good as its technological ability. An English inventor who was of great importance in the invention of the turbojet said these words. I partly agree with him, as technology is the basis of most aspects of war. If a nation were to fight a war without the use of technology it would fight with sticks and stones. Technological innovations in the First World War (WW1) have led to much of the technology that we have today, ranging form the various weapons modern armies are equipped with to the radios used for communication. If something is significant then it has an important influence on a thing, such as an event, that will happen in the future. In this way, did the technological innovations in WW1, such as gas, communications and the machine gun, not only have an effect on the outcome of the war but also have an effect on how our world is shaped today? One technological innovation of the war was the use of poison gases, such as mustard gas. The use of gas in WW1 was initially of huge importance as it was thought to be the weapon to break the stalemate. During the war, Gas was a horrific weapon, which had the capability to inflict life endangering injuries, but as the war drew on, the technology for preventing its effects, such as gas masks, were invented and improved. • 13. Telephone Conversation By Soyinka Wole Soyinka s Telephone Conversation is an eloquent exchange of dialogue between a dark West African man and his British landlady that inexorably verges on the question of apartheid. The poet makes use of the most articulate means to air his views, through that of a telephone conversation, where there is instant and natural give and take. It exhibits a one to one correspondence between the two. The interaction between a coloured and a white individual at once assumes universal overtones. At the outset, the poet says that the price seemed reasonable and the location indifferent . Note that as a word, even though the word indifferent denotes being unbiased , it is a word with negative connotations. However, as we come across the Landlady s biased nature; the word indifferent gains positive overtones, as it is better than being impartial. The lady swears that she lived off premises . Nevertheless, the very aspect of his colour poses a problem to her, far from her promise to remain aloof. Nothing remains for the poet, he says, but confession. The art that Kiefer created focused on a reconciliation with the shame and horror surrounding the holocaust, aimed aimed to redefine what it meant to be German in a post Nazi World (Smith). The piece I studied is located at the MoMa in San Francisco and is entitled Shulamite . Shulamite is a historical painting of a Nazi Memorial Site, which Kiefer created it in 1983. In this painting, Kiefer transformed the architecture of a site which was meant to honor Nazi heroes into a memorial for their victims. Kiefer uses some very interesting aesthetic techniques to reflect the intense emotions of that time and to reflect the rage, grief, and shame that Germans felt in response to the Holocaust. His intention was to reconcile with the country s dark past through memorializing the persecuted while painting the country as no longer representative of it s dark past. The piece displays a cavernous interior with a series of dark arches that recede towards some flickering flames. These huge bricks and arches make the hall resemble a sort of dungeon or a sort of oven. The palette he used is limited to solely to shades of black, and brown. White paint is used to outline the crevices and edges of the bricks. The windows are dark black, and the ceiling is pitched black. Although the film was not produced in Hollywood, it is still considered as Hollywood cinema as it exhibits the stylistic traits identified in The Classical Hollywood Cinema. Furthermore, this supports the perspective that there is a definitive history of Hollywood cinema. Blackmail fits within the time period of Hollywood cinema, whilst also displaying the forms narrative and cinematography techniques. However, Blackmail also mimics prominent features associated with German Expressionism and Soviet Montage, such as mise en scene, dramatic lighting and shadows. In one scene in Blackmail, Hitchcock manipulates the use of shadows when an Artist, sexually assaults a young woman called Alice. He stands in his room after being refused a kiss, coated in the shadows of the set looming over his face. The prominent use of shadows, create a visually uneasy atmosphere and convey a narrative without dialogue. Hitchcock himself stated that he had acquired a strong German influence by working at the UFA studios in Berlin . Therefore, it can be argued that Hollywood cinema does not have a definitive history. However, in the past several years they have begun to take the lives of many innocent victims, often young children. In response to the killings in Newtown, Conn., it has been noted, If this were a country, the number of children killed by gun violence would violate international law. (Browne Marshall) F.B.I. data shows in 2011, 1,668 African American children were killed due to guns. Day by day gun violence is rising and it is not only in ghetto neighborhoods. It has spread to the suburbs and small towns. Gun violence rates have increased in the last decade due to hatred and societal issues, and while shooters and victims both face many difficult obstacles, there are some solutions that the public and schools can enforce through awareness. One major cause of Gun Violence is hatred, which can lead to many different outcomes. These outcomes can either have a good affect on some or a negative. For example, Getting caught and now having a criminal record. Some may learn from this and never commit another crime. The rest on the other hand can be more raged when released from jail. • 43. Summary Of The Record Of The Peach Blossom Spring By Tao... In the 4th century, there was a story about a fisherman. After an exhausting day, he accidentally encountered a lovely stream full of peach trees on the shores. He followed the trace of the water, and entered an extremely narrow cave. Yet, when he eventually walked through the tunnel, the scene he saw stunned him: After walking another twenty or thirty paces, he suddenly exited onto an open clearing. The land became flat and broad. Houses were neatly arranged in rows. There were fertile fields, beautiful ponds, mulberry trees, bamboo groves and the like. Pathways crisscrossed the fields, and one could hear the intermingled sounds of chickens and dogs. There were people walking back and forth, busying themselves with planting crops. The clothing of the men and women was unlike anything he had ever seen. Old and young alike seemed happy and contented. (Tao Yuanming, The Record of the Peach Blossom Spring, excerpt of the 2nd paragraph) What an ideal life of retreat! Deep in the unknown mountain range hidden a traditional village with pleasant scenery, careful orderliness, empowered productivity, and most importantly, happy residents. The author of the ancient text, Tao Yuanming, was himself a reclusive figure who quit his governmental post in exchange of a peaceful rural life in which he was able to interact harmoniously with nature and his own spirit. Under his pen, a village with an idealized beauty protrudes a sense of nature and a landscape that was shaped by people in a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 44. Visiting Phantom Bodies Art 1010 Art Appreciation Visiting Phantom Bodies at the Frist Center for the Visual Arts (919 Broadway) was one of the most thrilling experiences I have experienced in the recent past. The exhibition provided me with an excellent opportunity to view countless works of art by a wide range of artists, an opportunity I treasure especially because I got to learn a lot from the different works of art available at the center. Phantom Bodies essentially refers to works of art that take a provocative approach in addressing themes such as loss, trauma, and transformation, and which aim to demonstrate the possibility that an animating spirit could potentially exist independently of the body (Frist Center for the Visual Arts 2015). I was most fascinated ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Therefore, the work engages the mind in a lot and this happens because of the powerful impact of color and texture, which serves to demonstrate emphasis and variety, which also occurs because the artist has combined them in a perfectly symmetrical manner (John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts 2014). The thoughts relating to the body are powerful to the reader, and they serve to remind the audience that death is inevitable and that we all have to face it as some point in our lives. Therefore, the principles of texture and color trigger remembrance especially because of the numerous repetitions that help to create balance, unity, harmony, and symmetry (Sayre 2012). I find this painting to be quite appealing because it evokes many thoughts and emotions relating to the mind, body, and the soul. More importantly, I find it very appealing because of its stunning beauty, which mainly happens because the artist has focused a lot on achieving harmony, unity, balance, and symmetry, all of which are critical in ensuring excellent art work. The use of butterflies helps to enhance its appeal. Similarly, the use of different colors and different sizes of butterflies contributes a lot in creating some form of texture and form that is appealing to the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 45. Use Of Birds In Poetry The use of nature in poetry and stories has a long history in Ireland going back to the early use of bird song to describe divine messages. (Melia, 1999). The natural world gives writers the ability to communicate expression through the use as symbols and Celtic traditions describe how animals and birds were important parts of society. The use of natural world subjects give a poet such as Oscar Wilde the inspiration for some of his best works in poetry and short story. Oscar Wilde s use of birds and how they are used throughout his writings show great examples of the use of the natural world. The connection to nature in Irish literature can be shown by examining some of Oscar Wilde s most important works such as The Nightingale and the Rose and The Happy Prince as well as poems such as Magdalen Walks. Oscar Wilde was an Irish poet who was born in Dublin Ireland and lived from 1854 1900. throughout his life Oscar Wilde wrote many poems and short stories. • 46. Analysis Of John KeatsTo Autumn Journal To Autumn Observation In his ode To Autumn, John Keats praises fall as the yielder of abundance and fruitfulness. Throughout the poem, Keats uses strong imagery to create a beautiful picture of fall. For example, in stanza twenty five, Keats writes ...barred clouds bloom the soft dying day, and touch the stubble plains with rosy hue... (Keats 738). Through these words, Keats uses the word bloom, an action associated with flowers, to describe a fall sunset. This effect makes the readers imagine a sky breaking forth lively in full bright, rosy colors like flowers. Through this description, the author leads his readers to admire in awe one of the beauties of fall. Also, Keats describes the activities of autumn through unique personification. As an illustration, Keats describes fall as conspiring with [the sun] how to load and bless with fruit the vines that round the that eaves run; as sitting careless on a granary floor , and as [by a cider press, with patient look, [watching] the last oozing hours by hours (Keats 738). Through these words, Keats shows the productive and fruitful activities completed in the harvest autumn season. Interpretation Through his poem, John Keats wants to awaken the readers to an appreciation of fall. Towards the end of the poem, he writes Where are the songs of Spring? Ay, where are they? Think not of them, thou hast thy music too (Keats 738). Although Fall may seem as the end to the life of spring and summer, Keats wants people to realize that fall enriches their lives with the ripe fruits, rewarding activities, and new sights and sounds (Keats 738). Through his description of the beauty, abundance, and rich harvest that people experience during the fall season, Keats encourages people to accept the blessings of fall with thankfulness. Integration Deuteronomy 16:13 15 states Celebrate the Feast of Tabernacles for seven days after you have gathered the produce of your threshing floor and your winepress. Be joyful at your Feast... for the Lord your God will bless you in all your harvest and in all the work of your hands, and your joy will be complete. • 47. Argumentative Essay On Global Citizenship While the very definition of the term global citizenship may vary, The Global Citizens Initiative has simplified such profound term into a person who identifies with being part of an emerging world community and whose actions contribute to building this community s values and practices (Israel, 2012). When looking at citizenship from a worldview, cosmopolitanism and globalization are the two main factors that are inevitably crucial, as they expand one s perspective to the extent where one individual form a global link and form a relationship based on shared beliefs and inclusive mutual respect, which also resulted in interconnectedness and intercultural communication. Cosmopolitanism is the belief system that every single individual has a place with a solitary group, in view of a mutual ethical quality. In political phrases, it consists of an ideological function of awareness and criticism. In sociological phrases, it is far a reconfigured device for members of the family in a worldwide global (Gonçalves, 2015). To quote Appiah, cosmopolitanisms is an ideology that can be define as citizen of the world (cited in Brookes, 2006). Moreover, cosmopolitans additionally agree with that each one human beings come under the same ethical requirements. In the face of cosmopolitanisms, the limits between nations, states, cultures or societies are therefore morally inappropriate, as cosmopolitanism indicates a commitment to universal values (Pitty, Stokes Smith, 2008). ... • 48. Analysis Of Before I Fall Before I Fall directed by Ry Russo Young and written by Maria Maggenti is a teen drama film released in 2017 that is about a teenage girl who lives the same day over and over again. Despite having a compelling lead performance played by Zoe Deutch and a powerful soundtrack full of ballads, Before I Fall still took a turn with a generic plot line, choppy dialogue and cliché. Although I loved the performance given by Deutch and how she was able to show the characters development through emotions and her acting, that still doesn t mean the movie was perfect. The movie was like Mean Girls put through a time loop. Before I Fall deals with a teenage girl forced to live the same day over and over again till she figures out why she s living ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Sam s whole story is that she s a mean girl who realizes that maybe she shouldn t be mean to people. (by the way it took her too long to figure out that maybe Juliet was the reason she was living the same day over and over again). The mind irking thing is that she never once told her friends that they should stop bullying Juliet or try to befriend her. Instead, she presents this half played, pitiful redemption that leaves the audience thinking that it was an act of heroism (I begged a differ). There are moments in Before I Fall where the dialogue lacked intelligence. It was almost as if the director wanted to be quick and get to the point of creating a movie that deals with time loop, and not think twice about whether the dialogue should make sense. There s a scene in the movie where Sam is thinking back on the last 24 hours of her life before the car accident where her and the other three girls are bullying Juliet, and then she says this line That was forever ago... that was yesterday. There were reasons that the audience watching this film to think okay that doesn t make sense. Saying something forever ago and that it happened yesterday just contradicts itself, the line I think should have been That was yesterday. Then there s another scene where Sam and Lindsay are talking in the cafeteria about how Lindsay and Juliet use to be friends and went on a camping trip together. • 49. Gender Stereotypes In The Ordeal Of Gilbert Pinfold Gender Stereotypes in The Ordeal Of Gilbert Pinfold In The Ordeal Of Gilbert Pinfold by Evelyn Waugh, Gilbert Pinfold has plenty of interactions with other characters and exhibits many gender stereotypes. There is evidence to support this by the way in which Gilbert presents himself to various characters. His dominance over women for example is evident in his relationship with Margaret. Gilbert also takes on a challenge of manhood presented by Fosker. Finally Gilbert demonstrates the men are always right stereotype throughout his interactions with the B.B.C. Therefore, whether it is a hallucination or a real life encounter Gilbert is constantly seeking appraise and an opportunity to demonstrate his masculinity. Gilbert and Margaret share a unique relationship throughout the novel. Margaret serves as Gilbert s most fond hallucination despite having great doubt and confusion towards Margaret as he is never able to interact with her face to face. It is not until Gilbert is presented with an opportunity to take her virginity that he shows any interested in her. It is now that Gilbert can truly feel like a man that he shows any signs of dominance. After receiving an invitation into Gilbert s cabin Margaret refuses resulting in Gilbert saying, Oh, don t be such a little ass. I ve been sitting here for goodness knows how long. Come in if you re coming. If you re not, I want to go back to bed. (143). Gilbert believes that for Margaret it is an honour to sleep with him and Gilbert feels that he should not have to spend any extra energy than required. This is for multiple reasons such as age. Gilbert is many years older than Margaret and with that comes a status and power. Gilbert feels as if he is higher than Margaret and too good to wait even another minute for her to enter the room. He would rather go back to bed then to spend anymore time waiting for Margaret to come and sleep with him. Another reason is the simple fact that Margaret is a female. With Margaret being a female Gilbert is given an excuse to be a jerk throughout the whole situation. This is not the first time Gilbert has demonstrated a lack of respect towards females. In a prior interaction with Margaret s mother, Gilbert is caught up in the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It drastically altered the course of Mexican and American history for years to come. It occurred because of the unsettled disputes about the borders of newly annexed Texas. Once the debilitating battle ended, the United States emerged a world power having acquired more than 500,000 square miles of valuable territory. There are many potentially feasible explanations on the cause of the war; including, fault laying with American slaveholders for conquest of Mexico, the war as an American plot and responsibility lying with President Polk of the United States. It was the insatiable ambition of the United States, favored by [Mexican] weakness that was the principle cause of the U.S. Mexican War. However, soon after the Mexican Republic was formed, it was realized that the U.S. expansion into Mexico could become a real danger. Mexico had just attained its freedom from Spain in the 1820s and as such, did not want to fall into another malevolent trap with the U.S., leaving its citizens unsure on how to proceed without starting a war. This is in part because not all migration was unsolicited before the annexation of Texas. After Mexico declared its independence from Spain it needed more settlers to populate the areas of Mexico without many citizens living in its regions. Thus, in order to ease tensions between the countries a proposal was created that involved U.S. citizens living in Texas to become citizens of Mexico and pledge allegiance to the Mexican nation. They would become Catholics and obey the laws of their new nation. However, what was decided on paper and what the settlers actually did were inconsistent with each other.
