Statue Of Liberty Essay
Crafting an essay on the Statue of Liberty may present both exciting opportunities and
challenges. On one hand, the subject is iconic and rich in historical, cultural, and symbolic
significance, providing ample material for exploration. However, delving into the depths of such
a well-known and extensively discussed topic requires a delicate balance between presenting
fresh insights and acknowledging established perspectives.
The challenge lies in navigating the plethora of existing literature and information on the Statue
of Liberty, which demands thorough research to avoid repetition and clichГ©s. Striking the right
chord between historical facts, cultural context, and personal interpretation adds another layer of
complexity to the writing process. It's essential to weave a narrative that not only educates the
reader but also captivates their interest, offering a unique perspective or shedding light on lesser-
known aspects.
Additionally, the essay must maintain a cohesive structure, guiding the reader through the
evolution of the Statue of Liberty, from its conceptualization to its enduring symbolism today.
Transitioning seamlessly between historical context, the artistic vision of FrГ©dГ©ric Auguste
Bartholdi, and the political motivations behind the statue's gift to the United States requires
finesse.
Furthermore, balancing the emotional resonance with analytical rigor is crucial. Connecting with
the reader on a personal level while conveying the profound impact of the Statue of Liberty on
American identity demands careful consideration of language and tone. Striking this balance can
be a formidable task, as the essay should neither become overly sentimental nor overly detached.
In conclusion, writing an essay on the Statue of Liberty involves navigating a sea of information,
presenting a nuanced perspective, and maintaining a delicate balance between historical accuracy
and emotional engagement. However, the challenge is not insurmountable with thorough
research, thoughtful analysis, and a creative approach to storytelling.

Foil Characters In Romeo And Juliet
William Shakespeare is the greatest playwright in the history of the world, and one
of his most famous tragedy plays is Romeo and Juliet. Romeo and Juliet by
William Shakespeare is about two star crossed lovers Romeo Montague and Juliet
Capulet. Their families are in a feud and brawls have taken place between these
two families. Romeo s personality can be viewed differently from different parts
of the play with the other characters he is around. At one point of the play he can
be seen as a positive, tranquil man and the next moment later he is a vicious,
stubborn person. Using foils Romeo s character is developed by contrasting
through Friar Laurence s wise personality, Balthasar s loyal personality, and
Benvolio s peaceful personality. Friar Laurence develops Romeo s character through
his wise personality making Romeo look stubborn. Romeo demonstrates as being
stubborn when he finds out he is banished and is willing to kill himself by saying,
Wert thought as young as I, Juliet thy love, an hour but married, Tybalt murdered,
doting like me and like me banished, then mightst thou speak, then mightst thou tear
thy hair, and fall upon the ground, as I do now, taking the measure of an unmade
grave man (3.3.65 70). Romeo is willing to take his life just because he can t be with

When Benvolio is talking to Romeo he says, Romeo, away, be gone! The citizens
are up, and Tybalt slain. Stand not amazed; the Prince will doom thee death
(3.1.131 133). Here Benvolio tells Romeo to be gone because he acted before
thinking. Tybalt would have died either way, but Romeo killed him and now he
would be punished. Furthermore, Romeo let anger get to him to make him kill
Tybalt. Benvolio said to Romeo before the fight not to fight Tybalt or get in the way,
which led to Mercutio dying because Romeo wanted the fight to stop. Romeo then

The Power Of Representing Problems As A Knowledge
Network
Abstract IN this paper we review the power of representing problems as a knowledge
network and some of the applications of knowledge networks in civil engineering
through explaining the search methodology of Dijkstra and kruskal algorithms which
are two of the most common algorithms applied in this field
Keywords Knowledge Network; Graph Theory; Civil Engineering, dijkstras

I.INTRODUCTION
This paper reviews 3 applications for knowledge networks in civil engineering, but
before we review these problem we talk about the importance of problem
representation and how it can transfer the experience of in certain field to another,
that s what Simon did in the known number scrabble game.
In section two we explain what is knowledge network and how does it work, in
section three we review the shortest path problem and how to apply dijkstra
algorithm, in section four we review the minimum spanning tree (MST) problem and
how to solve it using kruskal algorithm, in section five we explain the representation
of trusses as a networks and how could this be useful.
II.KNOWLEDGE NETWORK
The network consists of group of points represented by nodes and are connected
through group of lines called edges, if every edge in the graph has a direction then
the graph is directed

Strengths And Weaknesses Of The Judicial Branch
What is the Judiciary branch? The Judiciary branch is the third branch which is made
up of courts such as the supreme, circuit, the magistrate and municipal. This branch
interprets the laws and the state judges are elected by the citizens rather than being
appointed. Alexander Hamilton wrote essays to explain and defend the newly drafted
constitution, in 1788, prior to its approval. In Federalist No. 78, Hamilton argues that
the judiciarywould be the least threatening branch of government because it does not
control the military or budget of the nation. In other words, it has no power to act on
its own or to enforce what it does. The courts make the ruling only within proper
lawsuits such as cases and controversies in the United StatesConstitution. Even if a
law is passed by congress that is unconstitutional, the court... Show more content on

Another statement that Hamilton mentioned was that by the judicial branch being
independent it may fulfill its main purpose which is to protect the rights and
privileges of the people, as set forth by the constitution. In order to protect those
rights, the judiciary should be given that power of judicial review to declare and void
laws that are considered unconstitutional. Hamilton made a stamen that by giving
judges tenure is an integral part of the judiciary system. Therefore, it would help to
address some immediate concerns of appointing the unjust judge and a good behavior
itself will place the power to the citizens. With that being said, once again he
proves that the judicial branch is at mercy to the people. The only thing I disagree
is that by giving tenure to judges it mixes political views with personal values
creating a law in favor of the president, who is controlled and elected by the ruling
class. Today courts have ruled in favor of politicians who have taken liberties from
citizens one at a

Vending Machine Argumentative Essay
Have you ever been hungry before lunch or not had enough to eat during lunch? Well,
if this is so then, you might want a vending machine. A vending machine will help
get food for kids that might not eat breakfast or might not get enough to eat for lunch.
Our vending machine would have many good options to choose from. A vending
machine would help raise money for the schoolthat could be used for other things.
Also, eating breakfast before a test increases test scores. Lastly, we should get a
vending machine because it lets kids eat before they go home or have a game or

Sexual Obsession In The Maltese Falcon
Theme of Sexual Obsession and Lust for Money in The Maltese Falcon
This paper presents the theme of sexual obsession and the lust for money in the
novel The Maltese Falcon. While the novel is largely an investigative one with the
serious issues of violence and crimes, sexual obsession and the lust for money is
largely articulated. The modern American society is capitalist in nature and it is not
surprising that the love for money is captured in an investigative piece such as this.
The novel can be described as a fable of modernity as it unravels the man s strong
desire for love and money. Falcon itself is an illusion of happiness acquired through

Promise In Brave New World
Who defines peril and promise? (Add static to conclusion) When a new technology
is created there are two distinct parties who define whether it is full of promise or
peril: the creator and those who are affected by the creation. The definition used by
each party varies massively on the technology that was developed. The creator of a
new technologyis often the first person to determine whether or not it will bring peril
to society. In almost every case, the technology is constructed with the intentions of
promise, bringing a net benefit to society.

it s meaning, nations of the world join together.
The moment the Americans and the Soviets decided to collaborate and the

The reception of an alien message could result in any number of reactions from the
population of America, but Sagan chose to have the world work together to overcome
this issue. Aliens represent a threat outside of the human race, something completely
external and uninfluenced by the actions of mankind. This is why the scientific
advancement of contact aliens is seen as full of promise for our society: because the
threat is not something we created ourselves, but a threat we are responding to.
Essay Frederick Douglass and Slavery
Frederick Douglass and Slavery Frederick Douglass the most successful abolitionist
who changed America s views of slavery through his writings and actions. Frederick
Douglass had many achievements throughout his life. His Life as a slave had a great
impact on his writings. His great oratory skills left the largest impact on Civil War
time periodliterature. All in all he was the best black speaker and writer ever.
Douglass was born a slave in 1817, in Maryland. He educated himself and became
determined to escape the horror of slavery. He attempted to escape slavery once, but
failed. He later made a successful escape in 1838.

In reply, Douglass wrote Narrative Of The Life Of Frederick Douglass, An American
Slave (1845), which he revised in later years: in final form, it appeared in 1882 under
the title Life and Times Of Frederick Douglass. (Graves, 52 ) Frederick s oratory
skills left the largest impact on Civil War timeperiod literature. Douglass s most
significant autobiographical works include: Narrative Of The Life Of Frederick
Douglass, An American Slave: My Bondage And My Freedom: and Life And
Times Of Frederick Douglass. These three books are about the same person, and
share a similar message, but are written by Frederick at different times of his life,
looking at the past in different ways.
In Narrative Of The Life Of Frederick Douglass, Douglass used a simple, yet
educated way to show how he felt as a slave growing up in Maryland. He describes
in the Narrative I have often been so pinched with hunger as to dispute with old
Nep, the dog, for the crumbs which fell from the kitchen table. (Douglass, 34)
Douglass s Narrative was known as being a brief, descriptive (like his statement in
the above lines), and easy to read piece of literature. It showed the hardships of
slavery as seen by a real slave. I remember thinking that God was angry with the
white people because of their slave holding wickedness, and therefore his judgments
were abroad in the land (Douglass, 89) Douglass became educated through his own
means. Knowledge was truly a
Street Gangs And Gang Violence
Everyone is well aware of gangs and gang violence. Street gangs differ from
organized crime such as mobs and mafias. Street gangs commit a lot more senseless
crimes without reason. A murder can take place for something as simple as stepping
on ones shoe or looking at someone a certain way. All taken as signs of disrespect in
the gangworld; even the insane acts of what s known as initiation week where many
random murders take place. In a lot of gangs this process is done to show that an
individual has the heart to take a life, no matter whose.

Worldview Essay
Concept of Worldview
The phrase worldview is a mental framework of all people and groups to interpret
the nature of reality and the world we live in. It is philosophical, metaphysical or an
ideological reality of the world we live in. The worldview is also used in
understanding the law governing relationships among human beings, nature and the
purpose of human life. They are attitudes and ideas about the world we live in and
a thorough understanding of the systems of all the beliefs which hope will provide
all the answers to the range of questions within ourselves as human beings. In most
cases, worldviews are as a result of our human life experiences, and they
subsequently shape as individuals in the approach we have to live. This paper ... Show

Hence, there are significant influences to these worldviews whether informed or
inherited. Two of these most prevalent influences are what we call the identity based
worldview or the survival based worldviews which have been in existence throughout
human history. Subsequently, both worldviews have different cause communities to
conflict or harbor violence because of their differences in worldviews.
It is important to note that a worldview is not immediate as it developed over the
course of one s lifetime and passed on from generation to generation through
factors such as tradition, beliefs, education, political orientation, mass media, and
social interaction. When a child is born, they do not know what is moral or
immoral, acceptable or unacceptable or have any attitudes and beliefs; they do not
have a worldview. For the most of our lives, these worldviews develop in us over
time, and we take them for granted, and so they just remain below the surface of
our consciousness or awareness. Typically as human beings, we are partially
conscious of the world views we have, and it is to mean that we are not fully aware
of them. The development and comprehension of our worldviews are an evolution
and a process, and for this reason, the world views evolve in a direct response to our
collective cultural histories and individual and unique life experiences. Consequently,
depending on the type of worldview we adopt in the
How Cahokia Is The Most Influential Cities
Cahokia is arguably one of the most influential cities in its time. Although there is
little known about Cahokia, aspects of their culture (like games, artifacts, and
religious aspects) can be found throughout the Americas. If so much of the area had
not been bulldozed before being excavated, we may have known more about the area.
Cahokiahad such an impact during its time, traces of Cahokia can be found in other
communities such as the Osage, Pawnee, and many more.
1.Cahokia made its huge mark in history around 1050 BCE, when they relocated the
city and began growing rapidly. Due to advancements in agriculture and the
production of their major crop, maize, Cahokians were able to develop new traits and
skills that allowed the city to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
2. Going into the heart of this amazing city could almost be overwhelming to a
visitor. The Great Plaza was the largest public gathering area ever seen in this area.
There would have been people and houses covering miles of area. One of the more
disturbing things a visitor might see while in Cahokia is the human sacrifice.
Although to some this is barbaric, many different cultures all over the world
conducted these type of rituals. In one burial site, bodies of pregnant women,
mothers, and children of one family were found. Cahokians had a matrilineal
culture (power passed down through the women s male relatives, which is why it
is believed that this burial site was used as a political massacre of a competitor to
the elite family in the area. There is also evidence to show that the Cahokians had a
sense of astronomy and a way of telling time, which was brought on by the supernova
that occurred right before the boom. A visitor may have been able to see the
American Woodhenge that displayed this knowledge.
3.During the 19th and 20th century, archeologists were still trying to find more
information about Cahokia and its people before it was all demolished for the
growing city of St. Louis. During this time, many had flawed and misinformed ideas
about the area. A very prominent archeologist, James Griffin, believed that few
inhabitants actually live in this area and they only stayed for short periods of times.

1. What is the meaning behind the PHOSPHOLIPIDS chant?
Phospholipids make up most of the cell membrane, in a phospholipid bilayer.
Phospholipid molecules form two layers, with the hydrophilic (water loving) head
facing the extracellular fluid and the cytosol (intracellular) fluid, and the hydrophobic
(not water loving) tails facing one another. The cell membrane is constructed in such a
way that it is semipermeable, and allows oxygen, CO2 and lipid soluble molecules

5. The movement of oxygen and carbon dioxide into and out of the cell is called gas

of plasma membrane transport is used for gas exchange? Is this method best? Explain
your answer.
The two body organ systems involved in gas exchange are the respiratory and
cardiovascular systems. O2 and CO2 cross the cell membrane via simple diffusion.
Because cells all throughout the body require oxygen and the removal of carbon
dioxide, this simple method of diffusion is the best way to transport such small
molecules over a large area as efficiently as possible.
6. PHIL LIPID and PROFESSOR TOSOL discuss the Great Dehydration. Explain
what you think occurred during the Great Dehydration. Why are sports drinks
recommended to prevent, or treat, dehydration?
The Great Dehydration was a result of a stomach virus which apparently caused the
body to lose water. As the body lost water, water moved out of the cells in attempt to
keep solute concentrations balanced across the cell membrane. Sports drinks contain
water as well as electrolytes like

The lean and agile paradigms, while particularly different, can be and have been
joint within effectively designed and operated total supply chains. In the Wings and
Legs case, cost is an important market winner and this is reduced by leanness. In the
case of agility the key point is that Wings and Legs operate in an extremely volatile

Essay on Doctor Faustus by Christopher Marlowe
Doctor Faustus by Christopher Marlowe
Elizabeth I came to the throne of England during a time of intense religious turmoil
and political uncertainty. By the end of her reign, England stood as the first officially
Protestant nation in Europe; however, tensions between Protestants and the repressed
Catholic minority continued to plague the nation. Much of the literature produced
during the time of her reign reflected sensitivities to religion and resulting political
intrigues. In his play Doctor Faustus, Christopher Marlowe places the title character
in a power struggle similar in form to those conflicts dominating Elizabethan life. Yet
rather than a battle among courtiers for royal favor, the battle in Doctor Faustus pits

In the same respect, Elizabeth s ascension to the throne created royal pressure on
Catholics. Some Catholics fled the country, while others plotted from within to
overthrow her Protestant reign and reinstate Catholicism. Religion had become an
issue of royal decree and the source of political intrigue, linked inexorably to the
power struggles and political threats of Elizabeth s reign. Political success rested not
necessarily with religious devotion but with choosing the right side under the label
of religious conviction. Just as religion became a matter of superior political power,
so does the battle between God and the devil for Doctor Faustus soul become an issue
of power.
Faustus ambitious desire for power drives him to turn away from God in his pursuit
of necromantic arts. In choosing between the righteous course that God presents and
the damning course offered by the devil, he most carefully considers which will offer
him the most power. In the opening scene, Faustus examines the merits of logic,
medicine, law, and divinity, studies acceptable in service to God. He dismisses each
in turn, declaring that he has attained the end of logic and medicine (1.1.10). He
believes that a greater subject fitteth Faustus wit (1.1.11). For Faustus, law is nothing
but mercenary drudge and external trash, far beneath his ambitious purposes (1.1.34,
35). While each of these dismissals
Literature Review On Resilience
CHAPTER 2 LITERATURE REVIEW INTRODUCTION This chapter will
provide an overview of resilience and the factors that affect it will be discussed.
The literature review will address parental rearing behaviour, social support as well
as religious faith in relation to resilience. Joseph (1994) defines resilience as the glue
that keeps individuals functioning when they are confronted with misfortunes and
challenges. It is also the attitudes, coping behaviour and personal strength in people
who manage adversity and adjust well to changes in their lives, as well as the ability
to bounce back from bad or difficult situations. Resilience is understood as a force or
power, coping mechanisms, and other personal traits that keep individuals going

Such labels implied that these individuals were in possession of a rare and
significant set of qualities that enabled them to rebound from whatever adversity
came their direction, almost as if these fortunate individuals possessed a sort of
innate magical force that protected them form all harm (Santos, nd) Implicit in the
concept of resilience as a dynamic process is the understanding that resilience can
grow or decline over time depending on the interactions taking place between an
individual and their environment and between risk and protective factors in an
individual s life (Borman Rachuba, 2001). The process of resilience is dependent on
the factors in a person s environment and other factors in their life. These concepts
will be discussed in detail in the following paragraphs. Current theories view
resilience as a multidimensional construct, which includes constitutional variables
like temperament and personality, in addition to specific skills such as active
problem solving skills that allow individuals to cope well with traumatic life

Iran s Support For International Terrorism
Introduction
The 1979 Revolution in Iran ended a truly symbiotic relationship between the United
States and the Shah, thus creating the beginning of a longwinded road of economic
sanctions imposed upon Iran. As a result of Iran s support for international terrorism
and its aggressive actions against nonbelligerent shipping in the Persian Gulf,
President Ronald Reagan, on October 29, 1987, issued Executive Order 12613
imposing a new import embargo on Iranian origin goods and services , and for when
rogue Iranians took American citizens hostage at the embassy, releasing them months
later, the relationship began to become strained. In following the history of the

will identify the problem as being one of nuclear deterrence to solve for Iran s

Queen Elizabeth s Life And Accomplishments
Queen Elizabeth was born to Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn of England at
Greenwich Palace on September 7, 1533. She was named after her grandmothers,
Elizabeth of York and Elizabeth Howard. She was a great disappointment because
her father wanted a boy. Her mother was executed of false charges if incest and
adultery on May 19, 1536. Her father then married his third wife Jane Seymour
who passed while giving birth to Henry s long wanted son, Edward. At a young
age it was very obvious that she was very gifted at learning and was well educated.
In January of 1547 her father died and his son became King Edward VI. Henry was
too young to rule himself due to the fact that he was only nine years old, so his
uncle, Edward Seymour became Protector of
The Crucial Role Of Violence In Africa
Violence plays a crucial role in the liberation of various African countries. The
necessity of the violence, and the justifications for the violence are both highly
debatable. However, knowing the prominent role that violence played in the initial
colonization, is a justifiable and necessary act of the colonized peoples in the fight
for their independence. War and violence played a large role in various political
changes throughout history; often war is used as a tactic to force change, when all
else has failed. The people of these African countries are using violence in much the
same way, to take back their freedom. An oppressed people cannot be punished for
their violent actions intended to take back their basic human rights. Especially when...

Through this mindset of the colonizers, the colonized find necessity and
justification in their violent actions for their freedom and liberation. Fanon,
discussing the Battle for Algiers, writes, The Front de la Liberation Nationale
(FLN) in a famous tract stated that colonialism only loosens its hold when the knife
is at its throat (Fanon, 23). If the governing force is willing to torture and kill many
innocent Muslim people for the suppression of the rebellion, then the only option is
more bloodshed to stop the killing and the torture. Though violent actions often hurt
innocent bystanders, the FLN believed it was still necessary in order to have their
will accepted and acknowledged. Understanding the justification of violence that
injures and sometimes even kills innocent people is hard; however, if one looks at it
from the point of view of the oppressed, the people are standing by, watching them
be treated like animals and doing nothing to help. They are now accomplices instead
of innocent bystanders, and the violence is once again
How Did Bob Marley Shape Jamaican Culture
The songs of freedom use poetry to reaches the unconsciousness of the mind of the
people who hear the words. Jamaica is known for its many attraction such as the
beautiful sandy beaches, waterfall, and resorts. Additionally, Jamaica is known for
its festivities such as rum, coffee, jerk chicken, and their national dish ackee and
salt fish. However, the island is rigid with political and gang war, poverty, and
economic struggles place on the people since slavery days. Nevertheless, despite the
many challenges, the island boosted some the most influential people on earth. Bob

poetry and songs. People around the world and in Jamaica see these two icons as

Smoking in America
The amount of American smokers is at an alarmingly high rate. Each time a smoker
has a cigarette their life expectancy lowers. There are many different ways to quit
smoking, but many of these methods are difficult to continue doing or are more
expensive then continuing to smoke. This needs to change if the nation is going to
see a time where less smokers are around. Smokingeffects more than the smokers
themselves, so to increase the health of the entire nation smoking must be stopped.
After years of smoking, most methods don t quite compare to a smoker s addiction.
Well known ways to stop a smoking habit are a nicotinepatch, counseling, nicotine
gum, and substitute cigarettes. There are other ways that are less known, but still
effective. There is a plan that s name is the acronym S.T.A.R.T. The S stands for
set a date to quit. Choose a date within two weeks, so that time to prepare is chosen
before losing the motivation to quit. The T stands for tell family, friends, and co
workers of the plan to quit. Let friends and family know, so that people can help on
the way to stopping. The A stands for anticipate and plan for the challenges that are
on the road to quitting. Some people go back to smoking because of the withdrawals
and cravings that have to be faced. The R stands for remove cigarettes and other
tobacco products that may lead to a relapse. Throw away any cigarettes in the area to
help fight any urges that have the chance to occur. Finally, the T stands for talk
The United States Health Care System
Out of the nineteen candidates running for president, Ben Carson, Hillary Clinton,
Bernie Sanders, and Donald Trump were chosen for the analysis of their plans for
the United States health care system. The United States health care system has been
in need of adjustment for years, with prices being paid over double per capita
compared to other countries. While they have some similar views on current issues,
there are drastic differences in the candidates ideas for change.
To begin, Bernie Sanders, a Democratic candidate, believes that health care in the
United States is a human right regardless of a person s income. Universal health care
is a foundation of his goals. For example, he hopes to utilize legislation to remove
fraud in the drug industry while also reducing costs. He plans to expand and
enhance the Medicaid program until universal coverage is achieved. He states that
the U.S. is the only major country that lacks health care coverage for everyone and
considers our current system to be massively dysfunctional . He is looking to move
towards a more cost effective and higher quality system. He hopes to carry this out
by establishing a single payer system like Medicare. He compares the issue of the
poor not receiving quality care to the universal public education that happened 100
years ago. One day he hopes to carry out that extensive and needed change again but
with health care.
The issue of the United States health care system is evident, and his views of

Zen Gardens Essay
Zen Gardens
Zen Buddhism began to show up in Japan during the eighth century. It went through
various periods of popularity and disregard, but constituted one of the most important
influences on Japanese culture. All Buddhist temples include gardens. The first
temple gardens evolved from well groomed landscaping around Shinto shrines. Later,
the gates and grounds surrounding Buddhist temples began to use gardens to beautify
the temple, similar to the Heian mansion gardens. Jodo Buddhism (Pure Land) used
temple gardens as a way to symbolize the pure land created by Amida Buddha to aid
suffering souls in pursuit of enlightenment. These Zen gardens were meant to
encompass the nature of the universe. The garden ... Show more content on

Fishing on small boats to catch fish in their ponds was one popular activity. Poetry
reading and writing was also essential.
According to Feng shui, all structures have to be laid out carefully along compass
lines and in certain configurations to allow ki (Chinese chi ), the mystic energy of
life to flow properly. A reduced ki flow in a home was thought to cause sickness and
disharmony. For example, the builders, after consulting with a Yin yang diviner,
would usually create special arrangements to prevent bad ki from entering the home
from the northwest. In the first Japanese garden design manual, the Sakuteiki, it is
explained how water courses should flow from the northwest to the southeast so
that any bad ki could be cleansed by the protective deity of the east Kamogawa
(blue dragon), then proceed west again passing under a veranda of the house so as
to draw away any evil spirits that might have somehow slipped into the house.
Heavy stones were thought to serve as gates or landing points for spirits and were
thus placed very carefully. Other design rules applied as well. Influenced by esoteric
Buddhism, the garden design was expected to include an island in a pond connected
to the mainland by a bridge. This represented the world of enlightenment separated
from the world of man. The bridges were frequently arched and coated with bright red
lacquer (another Chinese influence).

Termites Behavior Lab Report
After completing the lab The Effect Colors of Pen have on Termites Behavior it
could be identified that termites like black pens the most and prefer to follow an
ink line. In both trials the termites seemed to avoid the squares for the most part,
but when they got near one they would walk around the outside of the square. Out
of all the colors it was evident black was the preffered color because they spend 11
seconds inside that square 2 seconds in the blue, and 3 seconds in the red. While
this seems like a short period of time considering each trial was 2 minutes long the
termites spend a good majority of that time near the black square which we did not
put into our data table. If three squares are drawn in different colors, then the
termites will mostly stay in the red square, because it likely has the strongest scent.
This was the hypothesis made in the beginning of the experiment and it was rejected
based off the lab results. The termites defintely prefered the white portion of the
paper and also liked the black pen the most as they spent most of their time in the
white or walking around the black square. According to Joe Culin from Clemson
University this is because the pen s... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This ended up affecting the results because termites spent a majority of the time in
the white part of the paper. If the amount of white was closer to the size of the
colored squares then the termites likely would of spent more time in the colored
squares. Halfway through the experiment a termite died which was another large
source of error. This affected the experiment because the new termite behaved
differently then the one who died. A student in another biology class peformed a
similar experiment where they drew a red and black circle and found the termite
preffered the black circle. This helps validate the experiment we did, as the termites
were also attracted to the black
Outliers, By Malcolm Gladwell
Outliers, a statistical observation that is markedly different in value from the
others of the sample. This basically states that anything that lies outside of the
norm is an outlier. In the book Outliers, by Malcolm Gladwell he focuses on the
different set of skills, timing, background, and effort a successful person needs to
have in order to become successful. Unlike most books or biographies that write
about the intelligence and ambition of an individual, this book looks around the
individuals, instead of directly at them. Gladwell look at the outliers of these
individuals, and determines how they have become successful, either by their
skill, their luck, their effort, and their whole background and what lies around
them. Gladwell had several ideas he had based people s successes on, one of
which were their skills. He focused on whether a person was capable of being
successful in their career path. Not just their IQ, or their ability to perform a task
well, but whether their social skills were also capable or not. Gladwell states that it
is not possible to make it far alone, so he would check to see if an individual wasn t
an awkward loner who excelled in only academically. Gladwell would not only
look at SAT scores and how well they did in school, but look at how creative or
innovative an individual was. Another concept that Gladwell looked at was the
timing of their birth, or the importance of their birth. Gladwell was able to look at
the trends and how well one was
Is Hamlet Sane Or Insane
The play Hamlet was written by William Shakespeare between 1599 and 1601.
Shakespeare was a dramatist, whose job was to entertain and edify audiences
(Bevington 3) he wrote plays making you view and see both sides of the play. Hamlet
presents himself as mad north north west (II.ii.376), defining himself that he is mad
sometimes and sane other times. Hamlettransforms among sanity and insanity, this
does not help him in seeking revenge against his uncle that the king wishes him to
do. With his own melancholy thoughts, Hamlet often is remembered as taking his
own life. Is Hamlet sane in an insane world or insane in a sane world? Rather than
being insane, Hamlet s flustering emotions are in fact a tactical move allowing him to
seek revenge... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Hamlets behaviour and appearance were a first time to Ophelia. She told Polonius
about the encounter that had happened and that she fears it. Polonius accused his
Hamlets behaviour right away. Ophelia explained the physical harshness Hamlet
was with her he took me by the wrist and held me hard; (act2scene1 87). Polonius
did not take this lightly believing Hamlets insanity was a love sick madness over
Ophelia even though she did not admit to that only that she feared it.Claudius told
Ophelia to stay away from Hamlet with him being a prince that their relationship
would not work with his royalty. Polonius had a fear of intimacy for his daughter
and hamlet. The chronic and overpowering feeling that emotional closeness will
seriously hurt or destroy us and that we can remain emotionally safe only by
remaining at an emotional distance from others at all times. (16 Psychoanalytic
criticism) Ophelia listening to her father, Claudius thinks this is the reason
Hamlets behaviour has changed so dramatically and suddenly. Polonius always
thinking he is correct spies on Hamlet when speaking to his mother about all the
madness he is having. Polonius being killed by Hamlet, has caused everyone to see
fully of his madness that Hamlet has created himself. Later with Hamlet admitting
to his mother that his madness is only fake I essentially am not in madness, But
mad in craft (III. iv. 187 8.) is his way of seeking revenge in a smart way of act.
Hamlet murdered Polonius when he thought it was Claudius. Hamlet does not show
affection like a sane person would after killing an innocent person. This is what
causes Laertes to seek revenge for Polonius towards Hamlet by wanting to kill

PART 2:
Dispute: Humans and fish are nothing alike: we have hands with fingers, they have
fins. It s an alligator! It s a crocodile! It s a lizard! It s.. a fish? All educated guesses
even preschoolers can notice. The discovery of Tiktaalik has given many scientists
something to think about. The first being that humans may after all be closely
related to fish. When first hearing this theory, for anyone it is hard to believe.
Humans have fingers and fishes have fins! They have gills and we have lungs!
Many things point towards the fact that humans have nothing in common with fish
until one looks at the bone structure of each and how exceptionally similar they are.
The reason for the similarity is because both species share a common ancestor. All
animals with limbs have a common design. If a batwing were to be formed from a
person s hand, make the fingers extremely long; a horse elongates the middle
fingers and reduce and lose the outer ones; frogs elongate the bones of the leg and
fuse several of them together. All in all, despite radical changes in what limbs do and
what they look like, this underlying blueprint is always present. Before Tiktaalik was

Using a Variety of Evidence from the Tomb of
Tutankhamun,...
The pharaoh was undoubtedly the most important terrestrial figure in ancient Egypt
and played a significant role in the functioning of Egyptian society. Entrusted with
governing the realm of Egypt and providing a link between the Egyptian people and
the gods, pharaohs were an essential element in the maintenance of the position of
society in the order of creation . This idea has been substantiated through the various
artefacts located in tombs in the Valley of the Kings, particularly that of
Tutankhamun. These finds have shed light on the role and lifestyle of the pharaoh in
ancient Egypt. Through the discovery and analysis of these items, historians and
archaeologists alike have been able to glean considerable amounts of information in...

This latter point is exceedingly salient, and the prominent featuring of Egyptian gods
throughout Tutankhamun s tomb denotes the considerable cultural significance of
religion and the way in which it essentially governed much of ancient Egyptian
society. Correspondingly, such artefacts as the Shabti dolls further emphasize the
importance of the afterlife, as the minuscule dolls are intended to represent servants
for the pharaoh in life after death. This illustrates that the pharaoh was regarded as a
hugely esteemed figure and shows the focus that was placed upon ensuring that the
afterlife was a comfortable and hospitable environment for the ruler.
Similarly, the pharaoh s responsibility in warfare and conflict in ancient Egyptian
society was significant, and they were seen as an intrinsic guiding force. In contrast
to later civilizations, Egyptian pharaohs often joined their forces on the battlefield
and became physically involved in the hostilities. Evidence of this has been sourced
in Tutankhamun s tomb, as a range of the items elucidate that the boy king would
have been immersed in the battles fought. The unhinged remnants of six chariots
were found in the antechamber of Tutankhamun s tomb, and are believed to have
been used for both ceremonial and wartime purposes. One chariot in particular differs
from most of the others, as it has a light frame and simple construction. Analysis of
the chariot has indicated that there was a wheel change in ancient times,

For both bacterial infections, some researchers recommend that to eliminate
persistent infections, it should use a laboratory test after the first infection before
estimating the number of repeat infections. In contrast, other researchers consider
that the infected patient should be asymptomatic for at least two weeks before
counting as a new infection. However, the majority of researchers set a number of
days after the initial infection to determine the burden of repeat infections (Hillis

The most common time frame for consideration as a repeat infection for CT and

Advancement in Diabetes Technology
The advancement in diabetes technologies, and treatments over the past 100 years
has been astounding! There have been many new ways to treat diabetes, each one
more promising than the last! From syringes to bionic pancreases the future for
diabetes care is very promising. Diabetes or diabetes mellitus is an autoimmune
disease that has no know cure. There are three main types of diabetes, Type one
diabetes, type two diabetes, and gestational diabetes. Each one has a different way of
being treated and different causes Type one diabetes is caused when the autoimmune
system attacks and eventually kills the pancreatic beta cells, which produce insulin.
There is no know reason why the autoimmune disease attacks the beta cells. Type
two diabetes is caused when the body becomes resistant to insulin. The reason for
type two diabetes is usually the body mass of the patient is large or the patient has
abnormally thick skin. Type two diabetes usually affects the minority groups in
America, while Type one diabetes affects mostly Caucasians. Gestational diabetes is
the least common type of diabetes among the three. Gestational diabetes is caused
during pregnancy when the mother has elevated levels of glucose. Gestational
diabetes affects one out of twenty five pregnant women around the world. Diabetes
was first described by a first century A.D. Greek man named Atetaeus. He described
the disease as a painful death because when the patients urinate they were practically

further detail to show how it explains money laundering. Control theory will also be
discussed to show how it does not explain money laundering. The two theories will
help the reader the understand why it is the crimes are committed. First, I will give
an overview of what white collar crimeis. I will then explain money laundering
specifically. I will also briefly discuss the statute currently in place for money
laundering and what is being done to prevent it from happening. Then I will connect
money laundering to the movie American Hustle. This will allow the reader to
connect the crime to a modern day example. Finally, I will end with my conclusion
and shed light on the answered questions and challenges on the topic.
While white collar crime can be defined in various ways, in the textbook,
Understanding White Collar Crime, it is defined as crime committed by a person of
respectability and high social status in the course of his occupation ... Show more

The statute regarding money laundering is Section В§ 1956(a)(1). To prove the
statute has been violated, The defendant conducted or attempted to conduct, financial
transaction (Strader 295). This means that there has to be sufficient evidence to show
the person was conspiring or has actually committed the act of money laundering.
Although this is in place, money laundering is still happening. Money laundering is
not a crime that takes place in one location, but rather all over the world. There
should more done to enforce the monetary transactions of companies. I believe if
there were more audits on corporations, more white collar criminals would be caught.
Because most places are not strictly monitored, they can get away with money
The British Withdrawal, East Of The Suez
Subsequent to the British withdrawal east of the Suez, the United States (US)
assumed the mantle of guarantor of Middle East stability. In furtherance of that
stability, prior to the Islamic Revolution, Iran, along with Saudi Arabia, was
considered one of the Twin Pillars of American support aimed at limiting Soviet
access to Middle East Oil. As a result of the revolution in Iran, President Jimmy
Carter, in his 1980 State of the Union Address, defined what came to be called The
Carter Doctrine: An attempt by any outside force to gain control of the Persian Gulf
region will be regarded as an assault on the vital interests of the United States of
America, and such an assault will be repelled by any means necessary, including
military force. A new Iran, hostile to America, threatened American interests by
potentially allying itself with the Soviet Union and placing the vital Strait of Hormuz
at risk to commercial shipping carrying oil to the United States. Now, after nearly
four decades of American provided security in the Arabian Gulf, the Soviet threat is
gone and a highly integrated global oil market is swamped with excess supply.
However, the Strait of Hormuz, and the Arabian Gulf, remains of vital interest to the
US and events there continue to threaten global maritime security. The Strait of
Hormuz is a narrow waterway connecting the Gulf of Oman to the Arabian Gulf and
is contained within the territorial waters of both Iran and Oman. This sea line of

An oligopoly is defined as a small number of companies in a particular market who

Battle Of Kings Mountain Essay
Thesis
This paper will examine the British and American Southern Loyalist defeat in the
Battle of Kings Mountain and discuss the assumptions the British made including
loyalist support, logistic support, and terrain advantage.
Introduction
The Battle of King s Mountain between the American Loyalist and American Patriots
took place on October 7, 1780 near Blackburn, South Carolina and Kings Mountain,
North Carolina. Major Patrick Ferguson s American Loyalist augmented to the Ninety
Six District, South Carolina, totaled 1,200 men. (Hickman, 2015) Ferguson s 1,200
men included, Tories from the King s American Rangers, New Jersey Volunteers, and
the Loyal American Regiment. (Wicker, 1998)
The American Patriots totaled 900 men under the leaderships of William Campbell,
James Johnston, John Sevier, Benjamin Cleveland, Joseph Winston, Joseph
McDowell, Frederick Hambright, James Williams, and Colonel Isaac Shelby.
(Hickman, 2015) These American Patriots referred to as the Over the Mountain Men

Some came on horseback while others walked. They wore doeskins, carried large
knives around their waist, and had long rifles. (Wicker, 1998) They were skilled
hunters and all sharpshooters. They men organized, but lacked military discipline.
They did not follow any protocol. They chose among themselves, whose leadership
they would follow. (Wicker, 1998) The British dismissed them to be no threat.
(Jones, 2009) While waiting for other men to arrive, the patriot militia prepared for
the cross country march. They prepared their clothing and equipment. They packed
food such as corn and jerky for the journey. They tended to the horses and cleaned
their rifles. They mined lead from near hillsides to make ammunitions. Their local
populace supplied them gunpowder. (Jones,
Ronald Reagan s Positive Influences
There were many influential individuals that shaped the world around what people
do today in everyday life. In the 20th century, influential people either changed the
way we lived today for the good or for the bad. One major political influential figure
was Ronald Reagan. He has been credited with ending the cold war, which abolished
many of the political and military tensions between the Eastern and Western Blocs.
He called the former USSR government wicked and demanded for the Berlin Wall,
that separated east and West Germany, to be torn down. I believe Ronald Reagan, a
former double termed president of the United States and actor, changed society for
the better for his choices in politics and what he had done with the military and cold
war. His actions shaped the world then and continue to do so now. His philosophy
still dominates politics today as he is often quoted and referenced by current
prominent leaders especially regarding fiscal policies.
Ronald Reagan created a Strategic Defense Initiative that was intended to defend the
United States from any nuclear weapon missile threat from other countries. This was
proposed mainly to protect the U.S. from its extent threat, which was the Soviet Union
at the time. Reagan wrote down in his diary addressing his Evil Empire Speech, I
did the bulk of the speech on why our arms build up was necessary and then finished
with a call to the Science community to join me in research starting now to develop a
defensive weapon that
An Adaptive Leader
Another key way to become an adaptive leader is to have a Deliberate
Development Plan. We all need goals. Developing a deliberate plan for those you
influence will keep them motivated and goal focused knowing that someone is
interested in seeing them succeed. It also allows you to create milestones and
monitor the effectiveness of the plan. Personally, I have negatively and positively
been effected by development plans. I did not have the supervision to create a plan
for my career as a young airman. Therefore, I took it upon myself to review others
career moves and developed a plan for myself to execute. However, if you are not
intentional in reviewing an individual s strengths and weaknesses and then adjusting
and creating a plan for
General Brain Size
Hi all, in topic 10 one of the subjects that capture my attention was how our large
brains are produced (Bingham, Paul M., and Souza J. 2009). Human brain is
around three times as large as that of our nearest living relatives, the considerable
apes. General brain size is a decent indicator of cognitive performance in an
assortment of tests in primates (Deaner R, Isler K, Burkart JM, et al. 2007, Reader S,
Hager Y, Laland KN. 2011). Subsequently, theories clarifying the advancement of this
momentous distinction have pulled in much intrigue. On the off chance that
subjective advantages are various and predominant, it is conceivable that the vast
majority of the variety in relative brain size among surviving primates is clarified by
variety... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Independent of the particular ecological setting, improved intellectual prowess in
this manner is relied upon to involve a survival advantage (Reader S, Laland K.
2002). Some semi solitary species that show prolonged mother offspring contact yet
need not bother with social abilities, for example, astute coalitions (for instance,
orangutans) are all things considered extensive brained, though a few species living
in complex gatherings with low social resilience, (for example, hyenas) obviously
did not evolve bigger brains (Holekamp K.
A Feminist Analysis of Cloud Nine Essay
Feminist Analysis of Cloud Nine
In 1979, Caryl Churchill wrote a feminist play entitled Cloud Nine. It was the result
of a workshop for the Joint Stock Theatre Group and was intended to be about
sexual politics. Within the writing she included a myriad of different themes ranging
from homosexuality and homophobia to female objectification and oppression.
Churchill clearly intended to raise questions of gender, sexual orientation, and race
as ideological issues; she accomplished this largely by cross dressing and role
doubling the actors, thereby alienating them from the characters they play. (Worthen,
807) The play takes part in two acts; in the first we see Clive, his family, friends, and
servants in a Victorian British Colony in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Her daughter, Victoria, is a child so she is virtually classless, while Maud is the
mother in law and part of the upper class. Ellen is the governess and part of the
servant/working class, and Mrs. Saunders, while part of the upper class, is also a
widow, which sets her apart from the other women; she is independent and a
threat. We are reminded in several places of the social classes within the story; an
obvious example would be when Maud tells Betty of Ellen You let that girl forget
her place (Churchill, 812). In the second act, there are four female characters; Betty
and Victoria are carried over from act one while Lin and Cathy are new. The classes
the women fall under have changed by this act. They are no longer in the Victorian era
and are all part of the middle to lower upper class economically speaking. The
hierarchy is still present, but it isn t nearly as apparent as it is in first act.
Class consciousness is central to economic, social, and cultural institutions (Bryant
Bertail, 2). A good example of this tenet can be found in the character of Maud.
Maud is primarily in Act One of the play, she is Betty s mother and serves and
something of a guide to Betty; she often informs Betty how the proper Victorian
woman would react given a situation. In the third scene of Act One, Maud has a lot
of dialogue in which her beliefs can be seen. For example, when speaking to Betty
and Mrs.

Statue Of Liberty Essay. Statue of liberty essay. Statue of Liberty Essay. 2022-11-24

  • 1. Statue Of Liberty Essay Crafting an essay on the Statue of Liberty may present both exciting opportunities and challenges. On one hand, the subject is iconic and rich in historical, cultural, and symbolic significance, providing ample material for exploration. However, delving into the depths of such a well-known and extensively discussed topic requires a delicate balance between presenting fresh insights and acknowledging established perspectives. The challenge lies in navigating the plethora of existing literature and information on the Statue of Liberty, which demands thorough research to avoid repetition and clichГ©s. Striking the right chord between historical facts, cultural context, and personal interpretation adds another layer of complexity to the writing process. It's essential to weave a narrative that not only educates the reader but also captivates their interest, offering a unique perspective or shedding light on lesser- known aspects. Additionally, the essay must maintain a cohesive structure, guiding the reader through the evolution of the Statue of Liberty, from its conceptualization to its enduring symbolism today. Transitioning seamlessly between historical context, the artistic vision of FrГ©dГ©ric Auguste Bartholdi, and the political motivations behind the statue's gift to the United States requires finesse. Furthermore, balancing the emotional resonance with analytical rigor is crucial. Connecting with the reader on a personal level while conveying the profound impact of the Statue of Liberty on American identity demands careful consideration of language and tone. Striking this balance can be a formidable task, as the essay should neither become overly sentimental nor overly detached. In conclusion, writing an essay on the Statue of Liberty involves navigating a sea of information, presenting a nuanced perspective, and maintaining a delicate balance between historical accuracy and emotional engagement. However, the challenge is not insurmountable with thorough research, thoughtful analysis, and a creative approach to storytelling. • 2. Foil Characters In Romeo And Juliet William Shakespeare is the greatest playwright in the history of the world, and one of his most famous tragedy plays is Romeo and Juliet. Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare is about two star crossed lovers Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet. Their families are in a feud and brawls have taken place between these two families. Romeo s personality can be viewed differently from different parts of the play with the other characters he is around. At one point of the play he can be seen as a positive, tranquil man and the next moment later he is a vicious, stubborn person. Using foils Romeo s character is developed by contrasting through Friar Laurence s wise personality, Balthasar s loyal personality, and Benvolio s peaceful personality. Friar Laurence develops Romeo s character through his wise personality making Romeo look stubborn. Romeo demonstrates as being stubborn when he finds out he is banished and is willing to kill himself by saying, Wert thought as young as I, Juliet thy love, an hour but married, Tybalt murdered, doting like me and like me banished, then mightst thou speak, then mightst thou tear thy hair, and fall upon the ground, as I do now, taking the measure of an unmade grave man (3.3.65 70). Tybalt would have died either way, but Romeo killed him and now he would be punished. Furthermore, Romeo let anger get to him to make him kill Tybalt. Benvolio said to Romeo before the fight not to fight Tybalt or get in the way, which led to Mercutio dying because Romeo wanted the fight to stop. Romeo then got aggressive and fought

  • 4. Strengths And Weaknesses Of The Judicial Branch What is the Judiciary branch? The Judiciary branch is the third branch which is made up of courts such as the supreme, circuit, the magistrate and municipal. This branch interprets the laws and the state judges are elected by the citizens rather than being appointed. Alexander Hamilton wrote essays to explain and defend the newly drafted constitution, in 1788, prior to its approval. In Federalist No. 78, Hamilton argues that the judiciarywould be the least threatening branch of government because it does not control the military or budget of the nation. In other words, it has no power to act on its own or to enforce what it does. The courts make the ruling only within proper lawsuits such as cases and controversies in the United StatesConstitution. Even if a law is passed by congress that is unconstitutional, the court... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Another statement that Hamilton mentioned was that by the judicial branch being independent it may fulfill its main purpose which is to protect the rights and privileges of the people, as set forth by the constitution. In order to protect those rights, the judiciary should be given that power of judicial review to declare and void laws that are considered unconstitutional. Hamilton made a stamen that by giving judges tenure is an integral part of the judiciary system. Therefore, it would help to address some immediate concerns of appointing the unjust judge and a good behavior itself will place the power to the citizens. With that being said, once again he proves that the judicial branch is at mercy to the people. The only thing I disagree is that by giving tenure to judges it mixes political views with personal values creating a law in favor of the president, who is controlled and elected by the ruling class. Today courts have ruled in favor of politicians who have taken liberties from citizens one at a

Douglass s most significant autobiographical works include: Narrative Of The Life Of Frederick Douglass, An American Slave: My Bondage And My Freedom: and Life And Times Of Frederick Douglass. These three books are about the same person, and share a similar message, but are written by Frederick at different times of his life, looking at the past in different ways. Although to some this is barbaric, many different cultures all over the world conducted these type of rituals. In one burial site, bodies of pregnant women, mothers, and children of one family were found. Cahokians had a matrilineal culture (power passed down through the women s male relatives, which is why it is believed that this burial site was used as a political massacre of a competitor to the elite family in the area. There is also evidence to show that the Cahokians had a sense of astronomy and a way of telling time, which was brought on by the supernova that occurred right before the boom. A visitor may have been able to see the American Woodhenge that displayed this knowledge. 3.During the 19th and 20th century, archeologists were still trying to find more information about Cahokia and its people before it was all demolished for the growing city of St. Louis. During this time, many had flawed and misinformed ideas about the area. The cell membrane is constructed in such a way that it is semipermeable, and allows oxygen, CO2 and lipid soluble molecules through easily, while other molecules like glucose, amino acids, water, and ions cannot pass through quite as easily. The movement of oxygen and carbon dioxide into and out of the cell is called gas exchange. Which two body organ systems are involved in gas exchange? Which type of plasma membrane transport is used for gas exchange? Is this method best? Explain your answer. The two body organ systems involved in gas exchange are the respiratory and cardiovascular systems. O2 and CO2 cross the cell membrane via simple diffusion. Because cells all throughout the body require oxygen and the removal of carbon dioxide, this simple method of diffusion is the best way to transport such small molecules over a large area as efficiently as possible. 6. PHIL LIPID and PROFESSOR TOSOL discuss the Great Dehydration. Explain what you think occurred during the Great Dehydration. Why are sports drinks recommended to prevent, or treat, dehydration? The Great Dehydration was a result of a stomach virus which apparently caused the body to lose water. As the body lost water, water moved out of the cells in attempt to keep solute concentrations balanced across the cell membrane. Sports drinks contain water as well as electrolytes like

The lean and agile paradigms, while particularly different, can be and have been joint within effectively designed and operated total supply chains. In the Wings and Legs case, cost is an important market winner and this is reduced by leanness. In the case of agility the key point is that Wings and Legs operate in an extremely volatile marketplace. Therefore the solution is to develop a hybrid supply chain. • 16. Essay on Doctor Faustus by Christopher Marlowe Doctor Faustus by Christopher Marlowe Elizabeth I came to the throne of England during a time of intense religious turmoil and political uncertainty. By the end of her reign, England stood as the first officially Protestant nation in Europe; however, tensions between Protestants and the repressed Catholic minority continued to plague the nation. Much of the literature produced during the time of her reign reflected sensitivities to religion and resulting political intrigues. In his play Doctor Faustus, Christopher Marlowe places the title character in a power struggle similar in form to those conflicts dominating Elizabethan life. In the same respect, Elizabeth s ascension to the throne created royal pressure on Catholics. Some Catholics fled the country, while others plotted from within to overthrow her Protestant reign and reinstate Catholicism. Religion had become an issue of royal decree and the source of political intrigue, linked inexorably to the power struggles and political threats of Elizabeth s reign. Political success rested not necessarily with religious devotion but with choosing the right side under the label of religious conviction. Just as religion became a matter of superior political power, so does the battle between God and the devil for Doctor Faustus soul become an issue of power. Faustus ambitious desire for power drives him to turn away from God in his pursuit of necromantic arts. In choosing between the righteous course that God presents and the damning course offered by the devil, he most carefully considers which will offer him the most power. In the opening scene, Faustus examines the merits of logic, medicine, law, and divinity, studies acceptable in service to God. He dismisses each in turn, declaring that he has attained the end of logic and medicine (1.1.10). He believes that a greater subject fitteth Faustus wit (1.1.11). For Faustus, law is nothing but mercenary drudge and external trash, far beneath his ambitious purposes (1.1.34, 35). While each of these dismissals
  • 17. Literature Review On Resilience CHAPTER 2 LITERATURE REVIEW INTRODUCTION This chapter will provide an overview of resilience and the factors that affect it will be discussed. The literature review will address parental rearing behaviour, social support as well as religious faith in relation to resilience. Joseph (1994) defines resilience as the glue that keeps individuals functioning when they are confronted with misfortunes and challenges. It is also the attitudes, coping behaviour and personal strength in people who manage adversity and adjust well to changes in their lives, as well as the ability to bounce back from bad or difficult situations. Such labels implied that these individuals were in possession of a rare and significant set of qualities that enabled them to rebound from whatever adversity came their direction, almost as if these fortunate individuals possessed a sort of innate magical force that protected them form all harm (Santos, nd) Implicit in the concept of resilience as a dynamic process is the understanding that resilience can grow or decline over time depending on the interactions taking place between an individual and their environment and between risk and protective factors in an individual s life (Borman Rachuba, 2001). The process of resilience is dependent on the factors in a person s environment and other factors in their life. These concepts will be discussed in detail in the following paragraphs. Current theories view resilience as a multidimensional construct, which includes constitutional variables like temperament and personality, in addition to specific skills such as active problem solving skills that allow individuals to cope well with traumatic life

War and violence played a large role in various political changes throughout history; often war is used as a tactic to force change, when all else has failed. Fishing on small boats to catch fish in their ponds was one popular activity. Poetry reading and writing was also essential. According to Feng shui, all structures have to be laid out carefully along compass lines and in certain configurations to allow ki (Chinese chi ), the mystic energy of life to flow properly. A reduced ki flow in a home was thought to cause sickness and disharmony. For example, the builders, after consulting with a Yin yang diviner, would usually create special arrangements to prevent bad ki from entering the home from the northwest. In the first Japanese garden design manual, the Sakuteiki, it is explained how water courses should flow from the northwest to the southeast so that any bad ki could be cleansed by the protective deity of the east Kamogawa (blue dragon), then proceed west again passing under a veranda of the house so as to draw away any evil spirits that might have somehow slipped into the house. Heavy stones were thought to serve as gates or landing points for spirits and were thus placed very carefully. Other design rules applied as well. Influenced by esoteric Buddhism, the garden design was expected to include an island in a pond connected to the mainland by a bridge. This represented the world of enlightenment separated from the world of man. The bridges were frequently arched and coated with bright red lacquer (another Chinese influence). The Heian nobles

Gladwell states that it is not possible to make it far alone, so he would check to see if an individual wasn t an awkward loner who excelled in only academically. The reason for the similarity is because both species share a common ancestor. All animals with limbs have a common design. The pharaoh was undoubtedly the most important terrestrial figure in ancient Egypt and played a significant role in the functioning of Egyptian society. Entrusted with governing the realm of Egypt and providing a link between the Egyptian people and the gods, pharaohs were an essential element in the maintenance of the position of society in the order of creation . This idea has been substantiated through the various artefacts located in tombs in the Valley of the Kings, particularly that of Tutankhamun. These finds have shed light on the role and lifestyle of the pharaoh in ancient Egypt. Through the discovery and analysis of these items, historians and archaeologists alike have been able to glean considerable amounts of information in... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This latter point is exceedingly salient, and the prominent featuring of Egyptian gods throughout Tutankhamun s tomb denotes the considerable cultural significance of religion and the way in which it essentially governed much of ancient Egyptian society. Correspondingly, such artefacts as the Shabti dolls further emphasize the importance of the afterlife, as the minuscule dolls are intended to represent servants for the pharaoh in life after death. This illustrates that the pharaoh was regarded as a hugely esteemed figure and shows the focus that was placed upon ensuring that the afterlife was a comfortable and hospitable environment for the ruler. Similarly, the pharaoh s responsibility in warfare and conflict in ancient Egyptian society was significant, and they were seen as an intrinsic guiding force. In contrast to later civilizations, Egyptian pharaohs often joined their forces on the battlefield and became physically involved in the hostilities. Evidence of this has been sourced in Tutankhamun s tomb, as a range of the items elucidate that the boy king would have been immersed in the battles fought. The unhinged remnants of six chariots were found in the antechamber of Tutankhamun s tomb, and are believed to have been used for both ceremonial and wartime purposes. One chariot in particular differs from most of the others, as it has a light frame and simple construction. Analysis of the chariot has indicated that there was a wheel change in ancient times,

Although I have loved working at Cantina, the right administration has consistently been missing. In contrast, other researchers consider that the infected patient should be asymptomatic for at least two weeks before counting as a new infection. However, the majority of researchers set a number of days after the initial infection to determine the burden of repeat infections (Hillis et al., 1994; Richey et al., 1999; Barnett and Brundage, 2001; Burstein et al., 2001). Diabetes or diabetes mellitus is an autoimmune disease that has no know cure. There are three main types of diabetes, Type one diabetes, type two diabetes, and gestational diabetes. Each one has a different way of being treated and different causes Type one diabetes is caused when the autoimmune system attacks and eventually kills the pancreatic beta cells, which produce insulin. In furtherance of that stability, prior to the Islamic Revolution, Iran, along with Saudi Arabia, was considered one of the Twin Pillars of American support aimed at limiting Soviet access to Middle East Oil. As a result of the revolution in Iran, President Jimmy Carter, in his 1980 State of the Union Address, defined what came to be called The Carter Doctrine: An attempt by any outside force to gain control of the Persian Gulf region will be regarded as an assault on the vital interests of the United States of America, and such an assault will be repelled by any means necessary, including military force. In the 20th century, influential people either changed the way we lived today for the good or for the bad. One major political influential figure was Ronald Reagan. He has been credited with ending the cold war, which abolished many of the political and military tensions between the Eastern and Western Blocs. He called the former USSR government wicked and demanded for the Berlin Wall, that separated east and West Germany, to be torn down. I believe Ronald Reagan, a former double termed president of the United States and actor, changed society for the better for his choices in politics and what he had done with the military and cold war. His actions shaped the world then and continue to do so now. His philosophy still dominates politics today as he is often quoted and referenced by current prominent leaders especially regarding fiscal policies. Ronald Reagan created a Strategic Defense Initiative that was intended to defend the United States from any nuclear weapon missile threat from other countries. This was proposed mainly to protect the U.S. from its extent threat, which was the Soviet Union at the time. General brain size is a decent indicator of cognitive performance in an assortment of tests in primates (Deaner R, Isler K, Burkart JM, et al. 2007, Reader S, Hager Y, Laland KN. 2011). It was the result of a workshop for the Joint Stock Theatre Group and was intended to be about sexual politics. Within the writing she included a myriad of different themes ranging from homosexuality and homophobia to female objectification and oppression. Churchill clearly intended to raise questions of gender, sexual orientation, and race as ideological issues; she accomplished this largely by cross dressing and role doubling the actors, thereby alienating them from the characters they play. (Worthen, 807) The play takes part in two acts; in the first we see Clive, his family, friends, and servants in a Victorian British Colony in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Her daughter, Victoria, is a child so she is virtually classless, while Maud is the mother in law and part of the upper class. Ellen is the governess and part of the servant/working class, and Mrs. Saunders, while part of the upper class, is also a widow, which sets her apart from the other women; she is independent and a threat. We are reminded in several places of the social classes within the story; an obvious example would be when Maud tells Betty of Ellen You let that girl forget her place (Churchill, 812). In the second act, there are four female characters; Betty and Victoria are carried over from act one while Lin and Cathy are new. The classes the women fall under have changed by this act. They are no longer in the Victorian era and are all part of the middle to lower upper class economically speaking. The hierarchy is still present, but it isn t nearly as apparent as it is in first act. Class consciousness is central to economic, social, and cultural institutions (Bryant Bertail, 2). A good example of this tenet can be found in the character of Maud. Maud is primarily in Act One of the play, she is Betty s mother and serves and something of a guide to Betty; she often informs Betty how the proper Victorian woman would react given a situation. In the third scene of Act One, Maud has a lot of dialogue in which her beliefs can be seen. For example, when speaking to Betty and Mrs.
