Racism And Sexism In Joseph Conrad s Heart Of Darkness
Literature is a global art that throughout many languages, cultures, and as well as the course of
time, is open to a magnitude of perspectives and opinions, ranging from literary criticisms written
by literary scholars to school students undertaking VCE. From the time Heart of Darkness by
Joseph Conrad was published in 1899 the novel has been held under considerable scrutiny as many
interpretations have been developed over the novels true intent as well as the overall message
portrayed within. Chinua Achebes An Image of Africais a well known criticism on Heart of
Darkness that focuses on a Post Colonial perspective to describe the nature of the novel. Jeremy
Hawthorn s The Women of Heart of Darkness is another well known criticism... Show more content

Achebe also criticises Conrad s lack of language for his African characters as dehumanising in its
attempt to strip the characters of respectable voices by instead describing their language as
animalistic grunts and cries . The few instances within the novel where an African character
speaks English are described by Achebe as deliberate in their insinuation that the African people
are unintelligent and illiterate. Achebe again contrasts Conrad s use of Africa as a place of
dehumanisation as alienating the African people rather than inspiring inhumanity in the white
colonialists that have travelled there. While many readers would agree with the failed attempt at
the exploration of racism, one must contend that writing about something does not necessarily
remove it from criticism and as such when reading Heart of Darkness one can gather the inklings
of prejudice weaved within the text by an author who is known for racist values. While the text is
deserving of appreciation, as for some it is deemed a literary masterpiece, one cannot ignore the
racist undertones of the novel as it is clear that Conrad has prejudices towards Africa and her
people and that these feelings were intertwined into the plot. Conrad s main characters all have
some racist values ranging from blissful ignorance to downright hatred to the African people and in

Donovan Implications
We laugh about the person who says, I know I m right; don t confuse me with arguments . And
yet there are times when we find ourselves wanting to say that too. For there are situations in
which we feel sure that we know something, even though if asked to give a good argument to
back up our claim we are at a loss to know quite how to do so. I know you re the person I spoke to
on the bus yesterday. I know I have two hands. I know it is wrong to let that child starve. I know
that six minus four leaves two. Our experience of being confident that we are right in cases like
those is often called intuition. Intuitive knowing seems to be a direct, convincing way of knowing,
which needs no further argument. And it is a perfectly ordinary,... Show more content on

He is keen to point out that it is not a type of argument ( direct ) and that it is very hard to doubt it
( convincing ). By defining intuition in this way Donovan is treating it as a possibly genuine way
to gain knowledge, distinct from intellectual argument.
Finally, Donovan asks the question, are there such things as intuitions in religious matters too? This
is his key question. Given that he accepts that intuition works on some level he wants to know
whether it can be extended to also work on matters of religion, such as whether God exists and if so,
what he is like. Donovan wants to explore whether religious experience can be a basis for intuitive
knowledge of God. This is unlike Swinburne s argument from religious experience where the
conclusion God exists is deduced from premises. Instead it is not an argument at all, but an
immediate apprehension of knowledge of God from experience of God.
These are the three key aspects of Donovan s argument in the above passage. Whilst there are no
secondary points to explain the section does link to several key debates in the philosophy of religion
. Firstly, in discussing whether religious intuition exists Donovan is contributing to the debate over
whether God exists. In addition to philosophers such as Swinburne and Paley, Donovan is offering
the possibility of an alternative way to gain objective knowledge of God/that he exists

Causes of the American Revolution
The Boston Massacre was an encounter on March 5, 1770, that was five years before the
American Revolution between British troops and a group of citizens of Boston that were then in
the Massachusetts Bay Colony. British troops were quartered in the city to discourage
demonstrations. As a result of constant harassment by the citizens, a squad of British soldiers that
had been struck by snow and ice balls with rocks inside thrown during a demonstration, fired into
the crowd, killing five men. The eight soldiers and their commanding officer were tried for murder
and were defended by John Adams, later president of the United States, and Josiah Quincy. Two of
the soldiers were declared guilty of manslaughter, and the others, including the officer, were
acquitted. The incident was skillfully exploited by the American patriot Samuel Adamsto create anti
British sentiment in the colonies. After the incident the patriots of Massachusetts Bay were more

Becoming A Licensed Master Mechanic
In the technologically advancing world country that we live in, everything has to be fast and
reliable. We want it right then and now, and if not we move on elsewhere. If the fast food place
has a noticeable line in the drive thru most people just go to another more convenient place. The
growing inconvenience of commercial breaks has led to prosperity by the online media
streaming services such as Netflix and Hulu. If where we get our food and TV from has to be
fast and reliable then the demand for your car to be is an afterthought. Who is there to provide
their services that keep own country and daily lives moving? These men and women have many
names and specialties. Most would call them mechanics or automotive technicians. The most
knowledgeable and experienced of this necessary trade are master mechanics. In order to become
a licensed Master mechanic you have to be a lifelong student of the trade, have years of education
and experience, and loveand respect for the trade itself.

Dr. Heidegger s Experiment By Nathaniel Hawthorne
Experiments have been conducted for centuries; testing theories, finding cures, and analyzing
behaviors. Many studies on human nature have been conducted with various results and theories,
given the human mind and conscious is one of the most complex systems in the world. There are
many aspects to the humanmind such as moral sense and principles. The intriguing issue of human
natureis a common topic of study and is a theme of the short story by Nathaniel Hawthorne. In Dr.
Heidegger s Experiment , Nathaniel Hawthorne uses explicit characterization through internal
events to uncover that foolishness is human nature. Nathaniel Hawthorne portrays this human
nature through the four patients who were chosen by Dr. Heidegger for his experiment.... Show

Heidegger s alleged water from the fountain of youth is real or not. The extreme exhilaration the
four patients were experiencing could have been all in their heads. Some point to the placebo
effect, which is a measurable, observable improvement of health or behavior not attributable to a
medication or invasive treatment (Carrol). This theorizes that the patients were told they would
become young again, so they believed that the water they were drinking really did make them
youthful, even if it had no physical effect; it was all in their minds. The possibility of the patients
being a part of a hoax is believable, considering that Dr. Heidegger was known for illusions and
experiments. Even the example of the rose being brought back to vitality by the fountain water
could ve easily been a trick performed by a magician. The four guest could ve simply been fooled,
given that people behave differently when they are participating in an experiment than when they
are not (Carrol). The common foolish human nature allowed the patients to be tricked into thinking
they had returned to their youthful state, via placebo

Dwight Howard Research Paper
At sixth, Dwight Howard of the Houston Rockets is the sixth best center in the NBA.
Howard will turn 30 this year. He s an amazing defensive player who has enough power to shove
his way to 16 points, grab 11 double digit rebounds, and control the paint like an animal. He
usually plays 29 minutes per game. Dwight is a good player as well as a funny person and
amazing dunker. He is so good at dunking, they gave him the nickname Superman.

Drummond had recently turned 22, he averages 13 points and 13 rebounds each game, and shot

Influence Of Media On Self Esteem
How Influential is The Media Affecting the Self esteem of Adolescents
Self esteem is a global evaluative dimension of the self and determines if you are satisfied with
certain aspects of your life. For example, your appearance, your personality, your abilities and your
relationship with others. The media is a powerful source of tool to manipulate adolescents that
portrays unrealistic images that affect the way they feel about themselves. I believe that the social
media does affect the self esteem of adolescent s due to self image.
Studies prove that the media can have a negative impact on self image. TV, movies, magazines and
the internet all pressures what their bodies should look like. In the article, Too sexy too soon: A
mother s battle against the sexualization of girls by Tina Wolridge quoted, One of the hardest
responsibilities of being a parent to a 13 year old girl is explaining the sexualized images of
young women that are seen on TV and in skimpy clothing, magazines and sexy videos...I want
my daughter to be valued for her mind, for what s on the inside and for being a good person. I
want her to understand that you don t need to get your value from your looks alone (Wolridge,
2013). It is sad that millions of teens believe the lies and resort to unhealthy measures to try to fit
themselves into that impossible mold. They feel so much less because in their heads they see
that s what it takes to be noticed or worthy. Images they see are nothing, but air brushed ideas of
what is the vision of perfection. The insecurity one holds buries the true beauty and worthiness
that person actual holds. It is sad how the media can have a negative impact to make someone feel
ugly and insecure about themselves. They all should be able to love their self for who they really
are and how they present themselves no matter what anyone else says.
During high school, I remember people tried to do whatever it took to fit in or be accepted. My
classmate and including myself spent trying to be liked, accepted, and fearing criticism. In the
article Living For Likes Julia Kirk, a writer and a student at Rider University studying
communications, explains this imagine scenario: You post a photo or a status and every

The exit of the United Kingdom from membership of the European Union, is also known as Brexit.
Derived from Britain and Exit.
The United Kingdom held a referendum to decide if they leave the European Economic
Community (EEC) in 1975. This was mainly because in 1963 and 1967 the United Kingdom
applied for membership and was denied because Charles de Gaulle the president of France at
that time dismissed the application because of the fear that English language will dominate the
continent. In 1973 the United Kingdom made a third application and was successful but backed
out in 1973 (2 years Later). The Prime Minster of the United Kingdom David Cameron
announced on 23rd June 2016, a referendum will be held allowing the British people vote on
whether to leave or remain members of the European Union. Majority of Britain voted to leave
European Union. The prime minister talked of a target to begin the Article 50 procedure as soon

Security Enforcement And Violence Within Schools
Introduction
Throughout the 1990s crime and violence within schools had significantly increased. The
increasing presence of school shootings became a great cause for concern for parents, students, and
school staff. To respond to this significantly increasing problem within schools, local police
departments partnered with schools to implement school resource officers onto campuses to
promote safety within schools. The research question How does the presence of security
enforcement in schools affect students involvement in crime and violence within schools will
determine the overall effect school resource officers have within schools. It will determine how
their presence and increase security measures within schools truly impact students.
Thesis Statement
To determine how the presence of security enforcement in schools affects student s involvement in
crime and violence, this paper will examine the roles of various security enforcement, the size,
location, and demographics of schools with and without security enforcement, the communication
and relationships between schools and security enforcement, and the implementation of additional
security.
History of Security Enforcement Officers In the 1990 s the number of school shootings and the
overall increase of crime and violence taking place within schools was cause for action to ensure
the safety of students. There was an overwhelming majority of staff and students who did not feel
safe at school (Mckenna Pollock, 2014).

The Importance Of Revenge In William Shakespeare s Hamlet
Who ever thought acting out revenge would be so difficult. In the story, Hamlet, we have a young
man who is seeking revenge for the death of his father. The person responsible his death was
Hamlet s uncle, Claudius. Hamlet contemplates killing Claudius many times throughout the play.
There is much speculation as to why Hamlethesitated, and why he didn t just killClaudius as
quickly as possible. Hamlet wants to ensure he did it right and that it was a righteous killing.
Hamlet had every reason to be angry with Claudius, for he murdered his father. Hamlet,
throughout almost the entire play, was completely dedicated to killing Claudius. But, Hamlet
need proof to accomplish his task. Deep down, Hamlet is a good man. This does not mean that
he was perfect, nor does it mean that he was incredibly righteous in every aspect. But, he was a
good man because he always examined what it was he was doing, or what he was planning. This
explains why Hamlet contemplated killing Claudius. Hamlet is unsure if he should kill his uncle;
would he be a thought of a coward. Should he partake in the death of his uncle? He examined these
things to ensure that he went about vengeance in the most righteous manner possible for him. It
was not merely a murder for revenge, but a murder for the kingdom. It was not for Hamlet alone,
but for the society that had been harmed by the existence and the actions of Claudius. Hamlet
understood this, and needed all his time of investigation to clearly establish

In some situations female workers earn more than their male counterparts in areas that lack
women as workers (McGregor). As stated previously, the wage gap is a result of choices women
have made in their careers, either to take time off to care for children, or just accepting more
benefits as compensation. The only way the wage gap would be considerably linked to
inequality would be if women and men worked the same hours with the same benefits offered.
There is simply too many variables for the claim of a wage gap to be reasonable ( The Wage Gap
). As for women being targeted for sexual assault, that is true, but for valid reasons. Those who
would target males for sexual assault would be males and females who are attracted to men.
Male aggression is linked to presence of testosterone, which women have less of (cite

woman sexually assaulting an individual. A man can also assault a man, but 95% of men consider

Within this report, we will be mainly identifying political and grand corruption. However, the
participant observations are about petty corruption.
Masculinity: The masculinity side of culture represents a preference in achievement, heroism, and
material rewards as success. This is the opposite of femininity, which represents a preference for
cooperation, caring for the weak, and quality of life.
Power Distance: The power distance represents how the culture handles inequalities between
people. Higher power distance, the more the culture prefers and accepts a hierarchical order.
Individualism: The individualism dimension of a culture is where individuals are expected to take
care of only themselves and their immediate families. The opposite is collectivism, where an
individual is loyal to a particular in group.

The Killer Angels Book Review

The Killer Angels Book Review
June 21, 2012 The Killer Angels by Michael Shaara: The Random House Publishing Group, New
York, 1974.
The Killer Angels is a stunning recollection of the telltale battle of the Civil War: the Battle of
Gettysburg. Set from June 29 to July 3, 1863 and told from the vantage points of several soldiers
and commanding officers from both sides, including Lee, Longstreet, and Chamberlain, Michael
Shaara effectively paints a picture of the war that divided America, from the tactical planning to
the emotional hardships The book opened with a sodden Confederate spy as he blazed through the
Union lines in the dead of night on June 29, 1863 toward the headquarters of Confederate general

During one such moment, Chamberlain is reminded of a Shakespearean speech: What a piece of
work man is...in action how like an angel! (page 126). Upon hearing this, Chamberlain s father
commented, Well, boy, if he s an angel, he s sure a murderin angel. (page 126). From this
interaction, Chamberlain came up with Man: the Killer Angels , a thought he often revisited over
the course of the Battle of Gettysburg, and from which the book acquires its title. Chamberlain
acted with the intention of getting something positive out of the war. He never treated the
Confederates as though they were less than him: Chamberlain put out a hand. Sir he said. The
Alabama man nodded slightly. His voice was so low Chamberlain could hardly hear it. Do you
have some water? Certainly. Chamberlain offered his own canteen. (page 243). It is even known
that he had his troops salute the surrendering South at Appomattox. Overall, I found Michael Shaara
s The Killer Angels an interesting book; it shed a new and different light on the Battle of Gettysburg
by showing it from multiple points of view. I believe that Shaara was successful in writing in the
diction of his chosen narrators; he used slang and dropped g s for the Confederate soldiers and
used proper grammar and British terminology for the Englishman, Freemantle. I was also impressed
by his knowledge of military terms and the effectiveness of which he used them. The terms were

Unsupervised Transcription Of Piano Music
Unsupervised Transcription of Piano Music

1. Motivation
Audio signal processing has been a very active research area. Automatic piano music transcription,
of all the tasks in this area, is an especially interesting and challenging one. There are many
examples of how this technique can contribute to our life. For instance, in today s music lessons and
tests, we often rely on people s hearing ability to judge whether a piano player performed well
based on whether the notes played are accurate or not. The process requires man power and is not
always fair and accurate because people s judgement is subjective. If a good automatic transcription

To tackle this problem, source separation techniques must be utilized.
2. Existing Approaches
In this section, we will discuss what has been done in this area of unsupervised music transcription.
Undoubtedly there are different aspects to this task. And different ways and techniques are used in
attempt to solve this problem efficiently and accurately. In an effort to provide a clear picture of
what has been done, we will categorize different approaches based on technique used.
The classic starting point for the problem of unsupervised piano transcription where the test
instrument is not seen during training, is a non negative factorization of the acoustic signal s
spectrogram [1]. Most research work has been improving on this baseline in the one of the
following two ways: better modeling of the discrete musical structure of the piece being transcribed
[2,3] or by better adapting to the timbral properties of the source instrument [4,5].
Combining the above two approaches are difficult. Hidden Markov or semi Markov models are
widely used as the standard approach to model discrete musical structures. This approach needs fast
dynamic programming for inference. To combine discrete models with timbral adaption and source
separation, it would break the conditional independence assumptions that dynamic programming
rely on. Previous research work to avoid this inference problem typically postpones detailed
modeling the discrete structure of timbre

addition, it may promote health in various ways. I will focus on the comparison of HIIT and
traditional exercise on the exercise performance, fat loss, fitness, insulin resistance, etc. Possible
mechanisms underlying HIIT induced fat loss and implications for the use of HIIT in the treatment
and prevention of obesity are also discussed.
High Intensity Interval Training versus Traditional Exercise Interventions for Promoting Health
Abstract:

1. Introduction: High intensity interval training (HIIT) as a compromise between time consuming
moderate intensity training and sprint interval training requiring all out efforts, is emerging as a
potential time efficient strategy for health promotion. Current recommended guidelines of 150
minutes of moderate physical activity per week is reduced by half to 75 minutes if the week s
activity is done at a vigorous intensity (ACSM, 2014).
HIIT, when compared to Traditional Exercise

Ruby Mine Short Story
Ruby Mines, please come to the office. A voice said over the intercom. Even though Ruby was my
best friend, I wasn t worried. Calls down to the office are just usually minor things. That s what I
thought. But, as I was about to discover, they could also be major.
Ruby ran up to me after school that day with her face creased with worry. She explained that she
was suspected of stealing the 7th grade student files, a crime that was committed a day earlier. I
knew she never did it. She said that Lexi Marker, a girl in our grade was the one that turned her
in. Lexi was a very popular girl, but loved attention (too much), and so probably just wanted to put
the spotlight on her. I really didn t want to have to be involved in a mystery, they re ... Show more

Why would you do that when you just could go home and use your phone, since you were the
one that stole your phone. I retorted. No... she started, but stopped when Mr. Johnston glared at
her. Silence. he said. Rose, thank you. I ll talk to you later. The next half hour was Lizzi trying
to get out of confessing. Eventually, he found out that she was behind it all just because she
wanted to get Ruby kicked off the basketball team. Lizzi was so annoying! She said she didn t
like how good Ruby was because she didn t want Ruby to take her spot on the A team. This was
probably the only logical thing she ever did, although it was mean. I m sure Ruby will be a little
scared when she hears that Lizzi thought she was good enough to kick her off the team! Lizzi
was forced to hand everything over, including her spot on the basketball team, but I couldn t sit

Tweeter Case Study
Tweeter
Case Questions
1. Objectively and subjectively, is Tweeter price competitive? Why or why not?
Tweeter is an electronics store that pride itself on selling middle and high end goods. To see if
they were price competitive, we would have to evaluate them with similar stores like Cambridge
sounds waves as opposed to Walmart. Before APP in 1993, it would not have been possible to
evaluate Tweeter s price competitiveness since there was no systematic benchmarking present.
However with the APP, objectively, I think that Tweeter did try to price their goods competitively
with other similar goods. The APP strategy showed that their prices were competitive even in
comparison with cost leader competitors like Lechmere. This ... Show more content on

Customers now perceive Tweeter as expensive but not more than its other competitors. By changing
the marketing mix and including the buyer guide, it tells the customers who are interested in high
quality, the features of the products and ensures them that they are taking a calculated decision.
These customers who are particular about the product now appreciate Tweeter s efforts to provide
technical advice and provide fair advices about the product through the guide.
Doing all these helps change the customer s perception of Tweeter of being expensive, it is trying to
convey to customers that their price on the high quality goods are matched to its other competitors.
Its unique selling proposition of high quality and customer service is embedded in the minds of its
customers and that s how they are differentiating themselves from the other retailers. I think overall,
their new marketing strategy really fits well and targets their niche market of Quality/Service
customer. Such customers are interested in premium products yet concern about price and I think
Tweeter s marketing message and marketing mix really targets those customers.
I also think that the buyer s guide is Tweeter s great way of establishing itself as the tech go to
and standard for tech products, similar to Kelly s blue book for cars. Also, the buyers guide is a
great way to establish brand image and relationship between its customers and

Recent innovations in technology restoration have made it possible to make a tile floor look
new and be much easier to keep clean than the original surface. No matter what the previous

Comparing Zeffirelli s Adaptation Of Romeo And Juliet
For never was a story of more woe/ Than this of Juliet and her Romeo. The last line of Romeo

Romeo, aged at around 16, belongs to the Montague family. The two lovers cross paths and the
next day they are already married. The play itself was written by William Shakespearein 1595.
Whether it a book or a movie, in all the spin offs, there are sometimes many difference or just a

Essay Monotheism vs. Polytheism
Monotheism and polytheism are two very different belief systems. Monotheism is the belief in one
god and polytheism is the belief in more one than one god. The concept of morality can and does
exist within cultures that have only one god, as well as cultures that have multiple gods. Without
morality, the world would be a place of extreme chaos and pandemonium. However, the foundation
for morality within polytheistic religions is quite contradictory to the foundation for morality with
monotheistic religions. Morality within polytheismis somewhat inconsistent and relative; whereas in
monotheism, morality becomes more consistent and absolute. Morality exists throughout all
cultures and religions of the world in some shape or form. In... Show more content on

However, the foundations for morality in polytheism and monotheism are quite different.
In polytheism the foundation for morality seems inconsistent and relative. Polytheistic religions
have no ultimate reality or god to set a standard for morality that all the followers must obey.
Instead, each of the many gods could have their own set of standards for morality. The
inconsistency of morality could theoretically lead one to be faced with the dilemma of which
god is correct. Let s suppose one is having an extramarital affair and is not sure if she should
continue the affair or stop. Should she pray to the goddess of lust and passion, to the god that is
all knowing or to the god of family and relationship? Not only does the inconsistency of morality
standards cause followers to be faced with choosing which gods to embrace, but also cause them
to be faced which god is appropriate to pray for moral guidance on different subjects. The notion
that each of the multiple gods can set their standards for morality, allows for the follower to
circumstantially pick and choose which god to follow. It is possible for a follower to be
circumstantially selective because they do not have to answer to one specific god. One can
choose to follow a certain god because that particular god s set of morals allows them to fulfill
some desire or need that would otherwise not fulfilled under other

favourite character of the movie, John Bender (Played by Judd Nelson). John Bender is a
stereotypical Criminal/Rebel complete with Denim Jacket, Leather Gloves and a Bandana. He
talks with confidence as he says what he pleases to either to annoy or anger others for his own

character of John brilliantly as you can really imagine Judd in real life truly acting this way as he
has given such a realistic performance that is both entertaining and true. I believe that without the
character of John Bender, The Breakfast Club as a movie would really be missing that extra punch
that made it such a hit with all his funny comebacks and entertaining scenes lead by Bender. Claire

The second option was chosen for several reasons. Having only one chart control makes the
program a good deal easier to follow for someone editing. It is also found to take less processing
power to redraw the same chart as opposed to having many run at the same time.
The channels are saved in each tab item but these channels are needed in the SamRunJobCtrl . The
channels are processed in that control and are used only there to create the data in the chart. In
SamRunJobCtrl the channels are written as _listVisChannels. These _listVisChannels need to be
updated every time. This is necessary to have two separate lists getting passed back and forth
because the _listVisChannels are updated when one of the pre defined buttons Add , Remove or

informs the TabChartCtrl of the change so that it can save the new channel. When the tab is
changed, the TabChartCtrl searched what channels are associated with the selected tab and passes
it to the SamRunJobCtrl so that it can write the _listVisChannels to the chart. This process is

Prison inmates should be allowed to take college courses because an education offers a positive
change for their release back into society. The education they receive will offer life skills and
provide them with positive reinforcement to change their lives for the better; while restructuring
the way some think and continue through life and society through making proper choices and

While in prison, education would provide a crucial key for inmate rehabilitation. Part of that

Many of the petty crimes and minor violations are therefore, reduced because the need to commit
those crimes on a financial basis is no longer there if the inmate can find a job. If the prisoner has
also been educated, they will more than likely have a broader moral compass than if they were just
doing their time . Some inmates, upon their release, make similar mistakes and commit crimes;
with an educated prison populous, this potentially becomes eliminated for most inmates. With a
decrease in crimes, the prison population decreases, as does the cost to house them in prisons. The
increased revenue is then used in educating first time offenders, thus reducing the risk of them
becoming repeat offenders.
Creating positive influences on our prisoners can reap many more benefits than just educating and
releasing back into society. Just as we invest money to educate our children, we can reinvest
money to target populations that our prisoners come from to prevent crimes. When we teach them
new skills that can better their lives, they can then teach others by example. Once an inmate enters
back into society and gets a job in his or her field, stays away from crime, and makes better
choices, they can make a positive impact on their communities. Younger generations can see the
encouraging example set forth and know that they too can make wiser decisions and hope for the

hierarchical structures of authority, there is often times, pressure from the higher officials toward
the subordinates to make commitments and goals. This, as stated by Jackall, calls for the

The Bears Of British Columbia
1. Connor Baldwin Discusses the Bears of British Columbia
As a media and public relations agent for the Canadian Province of British Columbia, Connor
Baldwin has spent many years photographing the bears of the region. There are two distinct species
of bear that are native to British Columbia, the Grizzly Bear and the Kermode Bear. Each of these
bear species are unique, and important to the wildlife and ecology of their habitat.
The Grizzly Bear, or Ursus arctos horribilus, is the second largest land based carnivore in all of
North America. It has a life expectancy of twenty years, and the average male Grizzly Bear can
reach an astounding three hundred fifty kilograms. While there are many bears that have the same
brown coloring as the Grizzly, these are easily spotted due to their anatomy. The Grizzly Bear
has a large hump or protrusion on its back, near the area of the shoulder blades. This mass of
tissue and muscle helps to support the enormous front legs of the bear. Other distinctive
characteristics of the Grizzly Bear include a concave snout, extremely long claws, and poor
eyesight. Though dark brown is the most commonly viewed fur color, the Grizzly can be any
shade from ivory to nearly black.
The Kermode Bear, also known as the Ghost Bear or Spirit Bear, is a cultural symbol for the
British Columbia Province. This white bear, is actually a black bear that carries a recessive gene.

Imagine living in a world where everyone is happy. One is free to have sexual intercourse with a
partner of his or her choosing without any repercussion. However, there is a catch; one is required
to be happy all the time. In the novel Brave New World, their society is controlled and everyone is
forced to be happy. There are three characters that are not happy. Bernard who feels that he is an
outsider and miss treated, John who is also known as the savage and was hot raised in the world
state society, and Helmholtz who feels his work is meaningless and wants to be able to write
meaningful things. Humanity suffers in the world state society because the members of society are
not making their own decisions, which is the cause of the World State unhappiness.
The world state is not as truthful as it appears to be. The society is forced but the government
makes the citizens feels as if they make decisions on their own .An example of this is soma.
Soma is a free drug that is given to everyone. By talking soma citizens avoid the truth of their

The Crime Of The Criminal Justice System
The criminal justice system in England and Wales is made up of multiple agencies which all have

of a civilized society with a society s formal response to crimebeing the responsibility of the
criminal justicesystem more specifically in terms of a series of decisions and actions being taken by

In England and Wales adversarial justice is the main principle used in the criminal justice

justice is not to get to the truth, the first barrier to a conviction is the lack of evidence. Once law
enforcement has a suspect and has collected all the evidence possible the case is put to the CPS
who will then have to decide whether it is likely a trial shall result in prosecution, and also whether

always scared that she was going to do something wrong. This made her life difficult for her

Three ways she made a difference is when she lost faith and love for God and prayer, then she
overcame that and is now a saint. When Teresa of a teenager she would sin a lot and she only
cared about friends and parties, then she changed her life around and started devoting her life to
a life of prayer. She also set up convents and many women with no place to live and nuns who
found it hard to pray would go to them, which inspired them to follow a life of prayer.
1.D How faith was important to her
Faith was important to Saint Teresa because she never gave up. When she was growing up she
went in and out of loving her religious life, but also sinning because she was caught up with
friends and popularity. She always found her way back to her religious life. When she became sick
she had inner experiences of joy and peace and that brought back her faith that God can make

A Literary Explication Of Acquainted With The Night
A Literary Explication of Acquainted with the Night In the poem Acquainted with the Night by
Robert Frost, the speaker sets a tone of loneliness, acceptance, and depression, all throughout the
poem. In this poem the speaker surroundings are all distant, he has no family or friends. He walks
down the saddest city lane (Frost, 1928, 4) feeling helpless but has never found anything to
comfort his depression. Leaving the reader a connection and a better understanding of his life. In
his poem, Acquainted with the Night Frost uses imagery, a metaphor, and irony to illustrate how
depression and loneliness affects the speaker. In this poem the first literary element that Frost uses
is imagery. The use of imagery gives his readers a deep... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The use of allegory is to help the reader understand the poet and why he wrote this poem. The
speaker experiences many difficult challenges and also suffering through depression most of his
life. When Frost began to explain that he has been one acquainted with the night (Frost, 1928,
1), which referred to loneliness and isolation he felt. The speaker states, I walked out in rain and
back in rain (Frost, 1928, 2). This is also where Frost uses the literacy element of allegory. He
was always in and out of depression. I have stood still and stopped the sound of feet (Frost, 1928,
7) or someone attempted to communicate, but nobody was around to acknowledge him. Frost
wanted the reader to feel the darkness and loneliness that he felt while walking down the street.
The speaker felt that nobody was concerned but not to call me back or say good by (Frost, 1928,
10) and nobody cared. Proclaimed in the time was neither wrong nor right (Frost, 1928, 13),
meaning that Frost was giving up his fight against depression. What the readers may have not paid
attention to is how the depression is affecting the speaker. This is the allegory of depression
because you never know what an individual may or may not be going through. This can be very
heartbreaking and hard to understand for families and

Walking Into A Normalized Prison
INTRODUCTION
As you walk into a haunted house, you are surrounded by complete darkness you do not know
where you are, where your friends are, what s going to happen, when someone will jump out at
you to scare you, if someone is following you, or even if someone is watching you. Your pupils
dilate and your heart beat intensifies. You try to understand your surroundings by carefully
stepping one foot in front of the other and extending your arms out to feel for what s around you;
you even yell to see if there are people around to listen to you. This feeling of being lost, helpless,
anxious, and scared is how prisoners feel every moment when they are in prison. They do not know
if they are being watched, who is watching them, from where they ... Show more content on

In the introduction, I have walked you into a prisoner s shoes to help you think about their daily
lives in an isolated and marginalized prison. Understanding their daily lives will allow you to
connect to the prisoner s emotions and feelings on a more comfortable and empathetic level.
Here, I have briefly introduced to you the ideas that will be presented and analyzed in this paper:
the invisibility and visibility, and discipline and normalization. In the theoretical and conceptual
framework section, I will thoroughly define and describe the ideas of discipline and
normalization, prison architecture, and visibility and invisibility within prison architecture, as
presented by Michel Foucault, author of the book Discipline and Punish, to help you better
understand my analysis. The analysis section will serve primarily to analyze the visibility and
invisibility of prison architecture to achieve my goal of showing you how this element of prison
architecture fails to create disciplined and normal prisoners. I will analyze parts of Dominique
Moran s book, Carceral Spaces: Mobility and Agency in Imprisonment and Migrant Detention, and
the chapter, Panopticism, from Michel Foucault s book, Discipline and Punish. I will conclude that
by analyzing the visibility and invisibility in prison architecture, we can see that prisons fail to
discipline and normalize a prisoner to be able to reintegrate back into mainstream

The History of Blood Agents and their Presences in Industry
SSG Sanders, Charles A.
17 February 2017
SLC 001 017
World War I was known as the chemist war because a lot of the modern day chemical weapons
were developed, improved and employed during this time. Blood agents got their start a few
centuries early, but did not see tactical use until the first Great War. In this paper I will discuss the
origin and types of blood agents. Hydrogen cyanide is the most effective of the blood agents and is
the most prominently used therefor we will discuss it in more detail. Blood agents make up a small
portion of the chemical weapons known throughout the world but are in great abundance in the
manufacture world, so it is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The term blood agent comes from World War I
, when most of the agents at the time produced
localized effects, cyanide when inhaled triggered systematic effects thought to be transported by
the blood, which coined the term blood agent. When in reality cyanide is any compound that
contains carbon and nitrogen with a triple bound. It inhibits enzymes inside the body by bonding
with the iron present in cells. This prevents intercellular oxygen utilization and causes the cells to
die. The heart and brain are affected the most because they require a lot of oxygen. The most
effective means of delivery is cyanide in confined spaces to capture the gas to prevent evaporation.
Cyanide is also present in human tissue in small amounts and the body natural metabolizes it
through enzyme in the urinary tract. This makes it unique among chemical agents because of its
practical rate of detox it requires a greater length of exposure.
If exposed to cyanide with in the first 15 seconds rapid breathing will begin and within 30 seconds
convulsions can begin. After two to three minutes respiratory activity stops, and cardiac activity
cease around six to eight minutes of inhalation at high concentrations. Small amounts result in
similar symptoms for example rapid breathing, restlessness, dizziness, weakness, headache, nausea,
and rapid heart rate. Small amounts rarely result in death. If exposed the best thing to

The Marriage Of Figaro Analysis
The Marriage of Figaro During the first eighteen centuries AD the freedom of speech was under
brutal attack. Everywhere, in the world there was political instability. Different part of the world
was rocked by tyranny. In this time, to restore parity people had fought hard. One of the spotlight
was France. Although, the Roman Empire had split long time ago, the monarchical division of
the iron empire spread across the side of Europe. The revolution had to be choreographed
appropriately and carefully, to counter this growing European tyranny and aristocracy. An art was
used as a mode of communicating revolutionary ideas by artists. Using an art, a wave of
revolution was established in France which turn out to be a fruit for the people of France.
However, the force emerging from that piece of art was so high that no political opposition could
managed to encounter, though they had banned the Marriage of Figaro. Against, the will of the
people the government have been keeping artistic restrictions to stop the ideas the consider
unfriendly for their survival and continued service. All most of all ways were using to stop the
spread of a specific piece of art across all possible media. The marriage of Figaro, a story of a
servant who stoop up to his boss and outwitted his master in France faced an original bean.
Beaumarchais, the author of the play depicted the French aristocracy as lustful, degenerate and
depraved. The game was considered revolutionary and banned at long last by

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Esomeprazole
Nexium or esomeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) prescribed to people who are suffering
from gastroesophageal reflux disease or in short, GERD. This is a type of chronic digestive
disease where the stomach s content comes back up into the esophagus because the lower
esophageal sphincter (LES) improperly relaxes. The LES is responsible for preventing the food to
return to the esophagus but when a person is suffering from GERD, it causes the LES to be weak

Chamomile is derived from the two Greek words kamai melon meaning ground apple because of
its apple like aroma and because this herb grows near the ground. Studies show that drinking
German chamomile tea does not only promote general relaxation, it also helps in lessening the
severity of digestive problems such as stomach pain, diarrhea, cramps, nausea and acid reflux if
taken at least three times a day. Other uses of German chamomile include soothing burns and skin
rashes, alleviate sleeping disorder (insomnia) and heal mouth sores and prevent gum disease.
Though this soothing plant s common form is tea, it is also available in capsule, tincture,
essential oil, cream and ointment forms. Whether this gentle herb is used internally or topically,
the side effect is very uncommon that s why it is very safe to be used by both adult and children.
German chamomile is even included in the list of substances Generally Recognized as Safe
(GRAS) in the United States. But for those who are allergic to ragweed, daisies and the likes
should avoid taking this

Essay On Bulimia Nervosa
Bulimia Nervosa is another eating disorder discussed in the DSM 5 (2013), that is most
prevalent in later adolescence and young adulthood in females (p. 437). In order for one to be
diagnosed, one must meet four criterion. Criteria A is recurrent episodes of binge eating
characterized by the following; eating in a discrete period of time (2 hours), and amount of
food that is larger than most individuals would eat in a similar period and the second a sense of
lack of control over eating during the episode (DSM v, 2013, p. 346). Women who are bulimic
tend to eat a vast amount of food in a short period of time just to purge as a result. This intensity
it of consuming, must happen in a moderate amount of time in order to be considered bulimic.
Better understood by Abraham (2008) she states, an episode of binge eating occurs when the
woman s resistance to eating fails and she has an irresistible desire to eat (p. 280). This type of
behavior represents a sense of lack of control. Women who binge have a hard time stopping and
controlling what and how much they are consuming.
Unlike Anorexia Nervosa, individuals with bulimia have the capability of recognizing when they
are wrong. Bulimics are typically ashamed of their behaviors and can ... Show more content on

Although some characteristics may exist in both disorders, there is certain criterion that makes
them distinct. The huge distinction between the two is the inappropriate compensatory behavior
that Bulimics exhibit (DSM V, 2013). In other words, people who binge eat don t necessarily
result in getting rid of the food afterward. Another differential diagnosis would be someone who
is Anorexia nervosa, binge eating /purging types. As stated in the DSM V (2013), these types of
behaviors can look similar to one who is bulimic in the beginning stage of someone who is
anorexic (p.

  • 2. Racism And Sexism In Joseph Conrad s Heart Of Darkness Literature is a global art that throughout many languages, cultures, and as well as the course of time, is open to a magnitude of perspectives and opinions, ranging from literary criticisms written by literary scholars to school students undertaking VCE. From the time Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad was published in 1899 the novel has been held under considerable scrutiny as many interpretations have been developed over the novels true intent as well as the overall message portrayed within. Chinua Achebes An Image of Africais a well known criticism on Heart of Darkness that focuses on a Post Colonial perspective to describe the nature of the novel. Jeremy Hawthorn s The Women of Heart of Darkness is another well known criticism... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Achebe also criticises Conrad s lack of language for his African characters as dehumanising in its attempt to strip the characters of respectable voices by instead describing their language as animalistic grunts and cries . The few instances within the novel where an African character speaks English are described by Achebe as deliberate in their insinuation that the African people are unintelligent and illiterate. Achebe again contrasts Conrad s use of Africa as a place of dehumanisation as alienating the African people rather than inspiring inhumanity in the white colonialists that have travelled there. While many readers would agree with the failed attempt at the exploration of racism, one must contend that writing about something does not necessarily remove it from criticism and as such when reading Heart of Darkness one can gather the inklings of prejudice weaved within the text by an author who is known for racist values. While the text is deserving of appreciation, as for some it is deemed a literary masterpiece, one cannot ignore the racist undertones of the novel as it is clear that Conrad has prejudices towards Africa and her people and that these feelings were intertwined into the plot. Conrad s main characters all have some racist values ranging from blissful ignorance to downright hatred to the African people and in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Donovan Implications We laugh about the person who says, I know I m right; don t confuse me with arguments . And yet there are times when we find ourselves wanting to say that too. For there are situations in which we feel sure that we know something, even though if asked to give a good argument to back up our claim we are at a loss to know quite how to do so. I know you re the person I spoke to on the bus yesterday. I know I have two hands. I know it is wrong to let that child starve. I know that six minus four leaves two. Our experience of being confident that we are right in cases like those is often called intuition. Intuitive knowing seems to be a direct, convincing way of knowing, which needs no further argument. And it is a perfectly ordinary,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He is keen to point out that it is not a type of argument ( direct ) and that it is very hard to doubt it ( convincing ). By defining intuition in this way Donovan is treating it as a possibly genuine way to gain knowledge, distinct from intellectual argument. Finally, Donovan asks the question, are there such things as intuitions in religious matters too? This is his key question. Given that he accepts that intuition works on some level he wants to know whether it can be extended to also work on matters of religion, such as whether God exists and if so, what he is like. Donovan wants to explore whether religious experience can be a basis for intuitive knowledge of God. This is unlike Swinburne s argument from religious experience where the conclusion God exists is deduced from premises. Instead it is not an argument at all, but an immediate apprehension of knowledge of God from experience of God. These are the three key aspects of Donovan s argument in the above passage. Whilst there are no secondary points to explain the section does link to several key debates in the philosophy of religion . Firstly, in discussing whether religious intuition exists Donovan is contributing to the debate over whether God exists. In addition to philosophers such as Swinburne and Paley, Donovan is offering the possibility of an alternative way to gain objective knowledge of God/that he exists ... This theorizes that the patients were told they would become young again, so they believed that the water they were drinking really did make them youthful, even if it had no physical effect; it was all in their minds. The possibility of the patients being a part of a hoax is believable, considering that Dr. Heidegger was known for illusions and experiments. From this interaction, Chamberlain came up with Man: the Killer Angels , a thought he often revisited over the course of the Battle of Gettysburg, and from which the book acquires its title. Chamberlain acted with the intention of getting something positive out of the war. He never treated the Confederates as though they were less than him: Chamberlain put out a hand. Sir he said. The Alabama man nodded slightly. His voice was so low Chamberlain could hardly hear it. Do you have some water? Certainly. Chamberlain offered his own canteen. (page 243). Motivation Audio signal processing has been a very active research area. Automatic piano music transcription, of all the tasks in this area, is an especially interesting and challenging one. There are many examples of how this technique can contribute to our life. For instance, in today s music lessons and tests, we often rely on people s hearing ability to judge whether a piano player performed well based on whether the notes played are accurate or not. Existing Approaches In this section, we will discuss what has been done in this area of unsupervised music transcription. Undoubtedly there are different aspects to this task. And different ways and techniques are used in attempt to solve this problem efficiently and accurately. In an effort to provide a clear picture of what has been done, we will categorize different approaches based on technique used. The classic starting point for the problem of unsupervised piano transcription where the test instrument is not seen during training, is a non negative factorization of the acoustic signal s spectrogram [1]. Most research work has been improving on this baseline in the one of the following two ways: better modeling of the discrete musical structure of the piece being transcribed [2,3] or by better adapting to the timbral properties of the source instrument [4,5]. Combining the above two approaches are difficult. Hidden Markov or semi Markov models are widely used as the standard approach to model discrete musical structures. This approach needs fast dynamic programming for inference. To combine discrete models with timbral adaption and source separation, it would break the conditional independence assumptions that dynamic programming rely on. Previous research work to avoid this inference problem typically postpones detailed modeling the discrete structure of timbre ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I will focus on the comparison of HIIT and traditional exercise on the exercise performance, fat loss, fitness, insulin resistance, etc. Possible mechanisms underlying HIIT induced fat loss and implications for the use of HIIT in the treatment and prevention of obesity are also discussed. High Intensity Interval Training versus Traditional Exercise Interventions for Promoting Health Abstract: Keywords: 1. Introduction: High intensity interval training (HIIT) as a compromise between time consuming moderate intensity training and sprint interval training requiring all out efforts, is emerging as a potential time efficient strategy for health promotion. Current recommended guidelines of 150 minutes of moderate physical activity per week is reduced by half to 75 minutes if the week s activity is done at a vigorous intensity (ACSM, 2014). Tweeter is an electronics store that pride itself on selling middle and high end goods. To see if they were price competitive, we would have to evaluate them with similar stores like Cambridge sounds waves as opposed to Walmart. Before APP in 1993, it would not have been possible to evaluate Tweeter s price competitiveness since there was no systematic benchmarking present. However, the foundations for morality in polytheism and monotheism are quite different. In polytheism the foundation for morality seems inconsistent and relative. Polytheistic religions have no ultimate reality or god to set a standard for morality that all the followers must obey. Instead, each of the many gods could have their own set of standards for morality. The inconsistency of morality could theoretically lead one to be faced with the dilemma of which god is correct. Let s suppose one is having an extramarital affair and is not sure if she should continue the affair or stop. Should she pray to the goddess of lust and passion, to the god that is all knowing or to the god of family and relationship? Not only does the inconsistency of morality standards cause followers to be faced with choosing which gods to embrace, but also cause them to be faced which god is appropriate to pray for moral guidance on different subjects. The notion that each of the multiple gods can set their standards for morality, allows for the follower to circumstantially pick and choose which god to follow. It is possible for a follower to be circumstantially selective because they do not have to answer to one specific god. One can choose to follow a certain god because that particular god s set of morals allows them to fulfill some desire or need that would otherwise not fulfilled under other ... Some inmates, upon their release, make similar mistakes and commit crimes; with an educated prison populous, this potentially becomes eliminated for most inmates. With a decrease in crimes, the prison population decreases, as does the cost to house them in prisons. The increased revenue is then used in educating first time offenders, thus reducing the risk of them becoming repeat offenders. Creating positive influences on our prisoners can reap many more benefits than just educating and releasing back into society. Just as we invest money to educate our children, we can reinvest money to target populations that our prisoners come from to prevent crimes. He walks down the saddest city lane (Frost, 1928, 4) feeling helpless but has never found anything to comfort his depression. Leaving the reader a connection and a better understanding of his life. The use of allegory is to help the reader understand the poet and why he wrote this poem. The speaker experiences many difficult challenges and also suffering through depression most of his life. When Frost began to explain that he has been one acquainted with the night (Frost, 1928, 1), which referred to loneliness and isolation he felt. The speaker states, I walked out in rain and back in rain (Frost, 1928, 2). This is also where Frost uses the literacy element of allegory. He was always in and out of depression. I have stood still and stopped the sound of feet (Frost, 1928, 7) or someone attempted to communicate, but nobody was around to acknowledge him. Frost wanted the reader to feel the darkness and loneliness that he felt while walking down the street. The speaker felt that nobody was concerned but not to call me back or say good by (Frost, 1928, 10) and nobody cared. Proclaimed in the time was neither wrong nor right (Frost, 1928, 13), meaning that Frost was giving up his fight against depression. What the readers may have not paid attention to is how the depression is affecting the speaker. This is the allegory of depression because you never know what an individual may or may not be going through. This can be very heartbreaking and hard to understand for families and ... • 41. Walking Into A Normalized Prison INTRODUCTION As you walk into a haunted house, you are surrounded by complete darkness you do not know where you are, where your friends are, what s going to happen, when someone will jump out at you to scare you, if someone is following you, or even if someone is watching you. Your pupils dilate and your heart beat intensifies. You try to understand your surroundings by carefully stepping one foot in front of the other and extending your arms out to feel for what s around you; you even yell to see if there are people around to listen to you. This feeling of being lost, helpless, anxious, and scared is how prisoners feel every moment when they are in prison. They do not know if they are being watched, who is watching them, from where they ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the introduction, I have walked you into a prisoner s shoes to help you think about their daily lives in an isolated and marginalized prison. Understanding their daily lives will allow you to connect to the prisoner s emotions and feelings on a more comfortable and empathetic level. Here, I have briefly introduced to you the ideas that will be presented and analyzed in this paper: the invisibility and visibility, and discipline and normalization. In the theoretical and conceptual framework section, I will thoroughly define and describe the ideas of discipline and normalization, prison architecture, and visibility and invisibility within prison architecture, as presented by Michel Foucault, author of the book Discipline and Punish, to help you better understand my analysis. The analysis section will serve primarily to analyze the visibility and invisibility of prison architecture to achieve my goal of showing you how this element of prison architecture fails to create disciplined and normal prisoners. I will analyze parts of Dominique Moran s book, Carceral Spaces: Mobility and Agency in Imprisonment and Migrant Detention, and the chapter, Panopticism, from Michel Foucault s book, Discipline and Punish. I will conclude that by analyzing the visibility and invisibility in prison architecture, we can see that prisons fail to discipline and normalize a prisoner to be able to reintegrate back into mainstream ... The term blood agent comes from World War I , when most of the agents at the time produced localized effects, cyanide when inhaled triggered systematic effects thought to be transported by the blood, which coined the term blood agent. When in reality cyanide is any compound that contains carbon and nitrogen with a triple bound. It inhibits enzymes inside the body by bonding with the iron present in cells. This prevents intercellular oxygen utilization and causes the cells to die. The heart and brain are affected the most because they require a lot of oxygen. The most effective means of delivery is cyanide in confined spaces to capture the gas to prevent evaporation. Cyanide is also present in human tissue in small amounts and the body natural metabolizes it through enzyme in the urinary tract. This makes it unique among chemical agents because of its practical rate of detox it requires a greater length of exposure. If exposed to cyanide with in the first 15 seconds rapid breathing will begin and within 30 seconds convulsions can begin. After two to three minutes respiratory activity stops, and cardiac activity cease around six to eight minutes of inhalation at high concentrations. Small amounts result in similar symptoms for example rapid breathing, restlessness, dizziness, weakness, headache, nausea, and rapid heart rate. Small amounts rarely result in death. • 45. Essay On Bulimia Nervosa Bulimia Nervosa is another eating disorder discussed in the DSM 5 (2013), that is most prevalent in later adolescence and young adulthood in females (p. 437). In order for one to be diagnosed, one must meet four criterion. Criteria A is recurrent episodes of binge eating characterized by the following; eating in a discrete period of time (2 hours), and amount of food that is larger than most individuals would eat in a similar period and the second a sense of lack of control over eating during the episode (DSM v, 2013, p. 346). Women who are bulimic tend to eat a vast amount of food in a short period of time just to purge as a result. This intensity it of consuming, must happen in a moderate amount of time in order to be considered bulimic. Better understood by Abraham (2008) she states, an episode of binge eating occurs when the woman s resistance to eating fails and she has an irresistible desire to eat (p. 280). This type of behavior represents a sense of lack of control. Women who binge have a hard time stopping and controlling what and how much they are consuming. Unlike Anorexia Nervosa, individuals with bulimia have the capability of recognizing when they are wrong. Bulimics are typically ashamed of their behaviors and can ...
