Davina Thompson CSD 301 November 13, 2014 Article Analysis Authors Jonathan L. Preston,
Nickole Brick, and Nicole Landi did a study to determine if ultrasound boifeedback for children
with childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) was efficient. Biofeedback feedbacks are instrumentals
that allow clinicians to be able to gather visual information on the client s performance, which can
only target lingual phonemes. This study has very little evidence that support it, but it is expanding
to may more research that will be tested in the near future. This study was focuses on CAS to see if
biofeedback of tongue movements could help these children improve their target speech while
talking. These studies have discovered that this method has improved

Winston Churchill
Churchill, Sir Winston Leonard Spencer
Churchill was born at Blenheim Palace, his family s ancestral seat in Oxfordshire, on November
30, 1874. He was the older son of Lord Randolph Henry Spencer Churchill, a British statesman
who rose to be chancellor of the Exchequer and leader of the House of Commons. His mother was
an American, Jennie Jerome, the daughter of a New York financier. Churchill inherited a family
tradition of statesmanship that went back to the great English general John Churchill, the 1st Duke
of Marlborough, in the 17th century.

the most substantial work he wrote before entering Parliament.
Churchill resigned his army commission in 1899 and turned to journalism and politics. He ran
for a seat in Parliament as a Conservative candidate but was not elected. He then went to South
Africa to cover the Boer War that had just broken out between Britain and the Boers, descendants
of Dutch settlers. He was captured by the Boers and imprisoned at the State Model School in
Pretoria. He managed to escape from prison and then take the railroad into Portuguese East Africa,
a neat little trick that made him a national hero. He then returned to South Africa and sought
another army commission. He fought and wrote about the war until he returned to London in the
summer of 1900. His newspaper dispatches were promptly reprinted in two books, London to
Ladysmith via Pretoria (1900) and Ian When Churchill returned to England in 1900, his South
African exploits had made him famous, and he was elected to the House of Commons. Though he
was a Conservative, he criticized military spending and supported free trade, which soon resulted
in a conflict with the Conservative leadership, who supported large military budgets and protective
tariffs. In 1904 he crossed the floor of the House to take a seat with the Liberal Party.

Discussion The gram stain result showed that my unknown was a pink long individual rods this
means that it is a gram negative bacilli. The growth on the agar of unknown appear off white with
straight growth and the broth growth was uniform fine turbidity. Uniform fine turbidity means
there is cloudy growth throughout the test tube. As time progressed the broth appeared clear with
some sediment. This could suggest that the bacterium is a slow grower or that the cells are older
and dying. This can affect the results of testing. We did to place an agar slant and broth tube in the
incubator for 48 hours at 25 degrees Celsiusto see if the temperatureaffects the growth. The agar
slant looked the same as agar slant that was grown at 37 degrees Celsius. The broth that was
incubated for 48 hours at 25 degrees Celsius did suggest that it was able to grow better at this
temperature being the growth in tube with the thick white clunks floating throughout and the
uniform fine turbidity. All of the biochemical testing on this unknown was done at 37 degrees
Celsius except when checking growth at 25 degree Celsius. The unknown showed a negative result
citrate test. This means the unknown doesn t use citrate as its sole carbon source for energy. The
thiogycollate test with unknown resulted with the growth within the band and below it. The

5. African American Perspective in Early 20th Century America
Throughout the era after the Civil War, Blacks struggled to show themselves and create an identity
outside of the confines of slavery. There were many different ideas that display how Black should
be perceived and how Blacks should carry themselves in order to uplift the race. Uplifting the race
was one of the most influential ideas of the time. Miscegenation, sexuality, and education are just
three of the issues that were influenced by the racial attitudes of the times. Many authors
commented on these issues and the other issues of the time. Nella Larsen, Booker T. Washington,
and Charles Chestnutt are three authors that share their views with their readers. Miscegenation

We make our customs lightly; once made, like our sins, they grip us in bands of steel, we
become creatures of our creations. By one standard the office boy should have never been born.
Yet he is a son of Adam and came into existence in the way ordained by God from the beginning
of the world (Chestnutt, 24). Chestnutt shows the judge in the same struggle that he leaves his
reader feelings. The customs of society say one thing; yet, true seems to be saying another.
Chestnutt leaves his readers with this dichotomy in his book. Chestnutt balances between
Larsen and Washington s views. He makes his reader think though the reasons why or why not
miscegenation should or should not be allowed. Sexuality was also an issue for Blacks in this
time period. Most black women were classified as either a respectable, almost asexual, lady or a
whore. They were classified as a mammy or a jezebel. There was a dichotomy between what
women were allowed to be. Sexual desire needed to be separate from respectability. And
respectability was highly prized. Larsen s character Helga struggles greatly with this dichotomy
between sexual desire and respectability. She has been taught to be a respectable woman in order to
uplift the race and that black women should be perceived in a certain way. Larsen writes of Helga
and Dr. Anderson s conversation about Helga s upbringing. Dr. Anderson says, Perhaps I can best

The Bank of New York and it s History On February 23, 1784, a small advertisement appeared in
The New York Packet, one of the many New York newspapers of that era. This advertisement
announced that prominent New York citizens had established a bank. The bank, established by the
prominent, would not officially open for business until June 9, 1784. That bankwould come to be

Global expansion began with an office in London in 1966, but a major breakthrough occurred
with the acquisition of The Irving Bank Corporation in 1988. This acquisition created the tenth
largest bank at that time and set the stage for what the Bank of New York is today. The

The interactive software can even replace many tools that educators have used for years. The
Smart Board allows for the virtual manipulation of tools like stop watches, scales, calculators, dice
and other educational manipulative (Carter, 2006) . The Smart Board also makes classroom
management easier. Unlike a computer which must be controlled at the mouse and keyboard which
is usually located at a desk in the corner of the classroom, Smart Boards are operated from the
actual board itself and even allows the instructor to control the computer in the corner of the room
remotely, leaving them to stay in the front of the classroom rather than off to the side during
lessons (DeCraene, 2003) .
The Smart Board is able to integrate into every subject in the curriculum. In a science classroom,
the smart board can be used to simulate experiments that have been run by students or will be
run. Variables can be swapped out or altered to show students, what if situations. Chemistry and
biology classes can use the smart board to perform virtual dissections, display three dimensional
models of molecules and atoms and can even be use the smart board as the display for an

8. Pros And Cons Of A Just War
Can participating in war ever be morally acceptable? Many people in history have asked this
question and attempted to answered it. This has resulted in different theories and opinions on the

war, why they should go to war, and what they should be permitted to do during wartime (Demy).
Many wars in history have show the devastation that man s cruelty to one another can cause. The

The Great Depression was a massive devastation throughout the whole of America where people
suffered and the economy was at a huge crisis. The Unemployment rose from 3% to 26% and
many people had died, showing how hard the citizens coped to survive in between this difficult

Steinbeck presents another character which I think is one of the most hindered upon Crooks.
Crooks is highly discriminated, especially at this time, because he is black. He is a black man
that lives in America at the time of segregation from the colour of his skin. This was tragic and
sad for the black community as they were marginal. Living as a black man being employed was
one of the most hardest job, this caused a lot of unemployment for the coloured public .The only
upper hand crooks had was a job in the ranch, it still was very risky, the boss beat him for no
reason, but this was all he could do for a living.
S pose you didn t have nobody. S pose you couldn t go to the bunk house and play rummy cause
you was black. 72. Steinbeck often demonstrates towards his audience that Crooks is a victim of
isolation and loneliness, this illustrates the high level of prejudice and separation against the black
ethnic minority of the 1930s. Crooks use of the word S pose twice in short time to show the
emphasis of his feelings.
The appearance and physical disability of Crooks also makes him impoverished, he has a crooked
back and thus is called by the name Crooks .
Now and then he poured a few drops of the liniment into his pink palmed hand and reached up
under his shirt to rub again. He flexed his muscles against his back and shivered. 67. Steinbeck

10. Discipline Models Of The Assertive Discipline Model
3.Using the discipline models presented in this chapter, which one or combination of models
best fits your personality and your own belief about discipline? Explain why this is so. I believe
I would use a combination of two discipline models, assertive and positive. I would utilize all five
steps of the assertive discipline model, yet modifying it a bit. Additionally,I would use certain
aspects of Positive Discipline Model.
Assertive Model
Step 1: Develop Positive Student Teacher Relationship
Step 2: Set Clear Rules and Expectations
Step 3: Monitor and Rack Inappropriate Behaviors
Step 4: Use Punishment When Rules Are Broken
Step 5: Use Rewards for Appropriate Behaviors
Step 5: Get The Parents on Side
I would also use positive model steps 1, checking frequently, especially at the beginning of the
year, that students know what is expected of them after setting clear rules and expectation. I
would modify the assertive model once again by using positive model step two, exploring
between sets three and four of the assertive model. I believe students learn from making
independent decisions, some of which may lead to mistakes. Mistakes can be a learning
experience and are ok. I would also use positive model step 4, celebrating student s positive actions
and decisions between assertive model steps 4 and 5. Positive reinforcement would be a reward
system I would go to first and use most frequently. Finally, I would adopt positive model step 5,
respecting students. I

Shakespeare s Rebuttal to Possibilities in Sonnet 96
Shakespeare s apostrophic Sonnet 96, one of the sonnets written to the blond young man, is
arranged similar to a rebuttal in an argument or debate. In the first three quatrains, he describes
several possibilities, such as the youth s winning nature and potential for mischief, only to refute
them in the couplet. He begins with concise one line points in the first quatrain, moves to a
comparison utilizing the entire quatrain in the second, and transitions to two line arguments in the
final quatrain, evoking the idea of a logical, organized argument. Along with reason, however, are

The second quatrain adjusts from end stopped lines to enjambed lines, with each idea occupying
two lines, and the comparison of royalty s humble jewels to the young man s slight faults
encompassing the entire quatrain. The quatrain becomes less like a simple argument and more
like a well developed line of reasoning as the ideas in the first and third lines spill over to the
second and fourth. Shakespeare contrasts the concept that [t]he basest jewel will be well esteem d
(6) by association on the hand of royalty as errors the young man commits are [t]o truths translated
(8). Although the technical pronunciation of translated puts the stress on the second syllable, many
people commonly stress the first syllable, which creates a trochee in the second foot of line eight.
The change from iambic to trochaic emphasizes the change from error to truth in the opinion of
those who know the blond young man.
The third quatrain differs again from the style of the second, shifting from enjambed lines two end
stopped lines. However, the end stop is not as forceful as in the first quatrain, with each complete
thought covering two lines, rather than one. As with the first quatrain, Shakespeare uses parallel
structure to make his point apparent. He compares the full force of the young

War is not a thing that to many people are able to describe, but there are the select few that can

for their country, some woman does not want their husband going and being killed , and some
have to live with the thought that they have to kill someone it all depends on the way you look at
it. There are four poets that exhibits and that is Vera Brittain: Perhaps , Wilfred Owen Dulce et

Owen includes very descriptive details showing how the soldiers have to live while they are at
war, Come gargling from the froth corrupted lungs, Obscene as cancer, bitter as the cud . The

is the author Rendezvous, he shows how people fear death. He shows that even though people
know that they are going to more than likely die they will still go and fight for their country.
Seeger tries to show how men keep their pledge to fight for their country And I to my pledged
word am true, I shall not fail that rendezvous. . This alone shows how heroic our soldiers are, it
shows that they are willing to take the chance so that their family will have the freedom they want.
Rupert Brooke is the author of The Soldier and he expresses how he hopes that when he does die
he hopes heaven is like his home. Brooke is showing the good thoughts that a soldier would have
if they felt like they was going to die And think, this heart, all evil shed away, also in this line

How far is language a tool of oppression in The Handmaid s Tale and Nineteen Eighty Four ?
Most dystopian novels contain themes of corruption and oppression, therefore in both The
Handmaid s Tale and Nineteen Eighty Four language is obviously used as a form of the states
control, enabling dystopian leaders to remain in power by manipulating language to restrict free
thought. Orwell and Atwood have utilized language as a key tool of oppression throughout their
novels. The use of language is mostly repressive, language can also be seen as liberating, and used
as an act of rebellion, which the state wishes to eliminate.
The novel Nineteen Eighty Four contains a world in which language is being systematically
corrupted. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Ministry of peace concerned itself with war , The Ministry of Truth dedicated itself to
destroying the truth and The Ministry of Love was described as frightening with gorilla faced

they are a threat. In addition the face of the party Big Brother is extremely ironic as Orwell uses
this as a tactic to make you feel reassured. This is because the word Big Brother is an example of
a double entendre as a big brother is commonly associated with protection, care and love which is
the extreme opposite in this case as the party seeks power...for its own sake conveying the irony
further as it is not what it seems at first glance. The constant motif of BIG BROTHER IS
WATCHING YOU exemplifies the idea they will always try to control you, and they have great
power. The fact that Orwell chose these names is a reflection of the Party s of the brainwashing of
their society and the desire for control over the people. It is a warning as it emphasises the abusive
nature of dictators, as they use psychological manipulation as a means of control. The use of names
in Nineteen Eighty Four presents a false sense of security and desirability to citizens, as it makes
the state appear friendly and trust worthy regardless of their demeaning acts. The slogan of the

20. Smoke Signals Analysis
The film, Smoke Signals was about an adolescent name Victor and his friend Thomas on a
journey to see what happened to Victor s father. Throughout the movie, Victor has trouble trying
to forgive his father for leaving his mother and himself behind. The context behind the movie did
a great job in illustrating the culture of Native Americans and threw in some of the common
stereotypes that are associated with Native Americans. Some of the stereotypes about Native
Americans were domestic violence, them being alcoholics and a scene where one of the female
characters, Lucy, says we barter because we re Indian. The depiction of poverty and struggle in
the movie was not as concise because of the difference in living space between Victor s familyand
Thomas s. Victor and his mother live in a decent home. In contrast, Thomas and his grandmother
live in a higher standard living space. No one in the film was really struggling to meet ends met
like how it is in the real world. If the movie was not focused on Victor and Thomas journey, the
story would have taken a different path.
In the scene where Victor and Thomas were on the bus, Victor stated there s three things that are
needed to be a true Indian. The first thing being is that you have to be stoic, if not White people will

21. We Wear The Mask Literary Devices
Since the major part of the poem s recitation process has reached its finish line, I am relaxed,
satisfied, and able to reflect on it adequately. I regard to the whole process as a fascinating, valuable
and challenging adventure.
Approximately two months ago, I began looking for a poem, which was a serious work since I
pursued a powerful verse that was appropriate to my present state. Moreover, the poem s selection
procedure involved studying historical and cultural aspects, for the reason that I was grown under a
different circumstance and shared another background. I acknowledge the challenge of reading
poetry in a foreign language due to an effort to realize the main message of the poem immediately
and recognize the literary devices directly. Conversely, reading poetry in a native language seems
natural and habituated inasmuch the sounds, music, vocabulary, phraseology, images and events

22. Customer Complaints At The Hospitality Industry
Abstract
This paper delves into the realm of customer complaints in the Hospitality Industry. Issues that
relate to customer complaints in general, complaining as a process, the impact of customer
complaints, the most common complaints in the Hospitality Industry, hotel brands with the highest
rate of complaints, and handling guest complaints are discussed.
By examining the use of the LEARN Model to settle guest complaints by using the 5 elements of
Listening, Empathy, Apology, Reaction and Notification.
Themes explored include the value of complaining, customer satisfaction, widespread industry
complaints, and tools and methods of resolution.
Conclusions are presented as to the value of the discussed techniques and procedures in ... Show

Barlow and MГёller claim that complaints are not problems to be avoided but gifts to be
welcomed. They also write that complaints are important for several reasons, including:
You don t know how to improve your product or service if you don t know what s wrong.
Customer complaints can give you ideas for new products and services.
Complaints give you valuable information about what s important to people and what they re
willing to spend money on.
Complaints also tell you that the customer still wants to do business with you Most customers don t
complain they just take their business elsewhere, because they ve given up hope of getting what
they need from you.
Complaining as a Process:
Landon (1980) also argues that it is extremely useful to study the complaining process and that
companies can benefit greatly from the process of endeavoring to understand the causes, types,
motives, and style of consumer complaining. The author explains that the complaint process
involves the consumer s evaluation of dissatisfaction and the choice to make the dissatisfaction
known. The interaction between the consumer and the responsible party represents a process of
confrontation and negotiation.
Impact of Customer Complaints:
General knowledge is that customers are more perceptive to losses than gains which means that
worse than expected service is more damaging than better than expected service is beneficial (Rust
et al. 1999).

24. The European Union s Democratic Deficit
The European Union has greatly evolved over the decades since it has begun into a well evolved
quasi state of over 28 countries, and over five hundred million citizens. The European Union has
been regarded as a method to bring democratic stability and economic prosperity to less developed
democracies in East and Central Europe. Although the European Unionhas a mandate to bring all of
these standards, the European Union lacks these basic standards for their overall institution. This
structural problem has given the European Union its own democratic deficit . The rise of the
democratic deficit has arisen from many undemocratic characteristics of EU institutions, and a
lack of a demos or a lack of a single socio cultural European identity. In order for a political body
to remain legitimate, it must have the trust and support of the citizens it governs, and make changes
for the continuation of its future. In other words, if the European Union does not take action to
combat its democratic deficit, the future of the European Unions institution will be at risk. Another
serious issue is the European Union has seen democratic backsliding of many Eastern European
countries. This paper will discuss the major issues that the Democratic Deficit has caused for the
European Union, and what possible reforms can be done to help fix the democratic deficit. The
European Union is one of the world s greatest economic superpowers. Although the EU does not

A. Watt (personal communication, August, 7, 2015) commented that out of all the members at
the gym she works at, only 7% of them fit into older population category. Based on this
statement, I think the amount of physically active older adults needs to increase dramatically. It
is important to promote and support physical activity for the older population try and raise the
amount of physically active older adults. Physical activity is defined as any bodily movement
produced by skeletal muscles that require energy expenditure . (World Health Organisation, 2015,
para. 1). I believe it is important for the older population to be physically active because there are
so many benefits which come from it. Some of the many benefits include reduced risk of getting
diseases, prevention of obesity, better quality of life, reduced muscleshrinkage, increased energy
and improved moods. (Berger, Cardina, Tobar Zi, 2015, p. 43). The benefits which I believe are
most beneficial to the older population are having reduced disease risk, a better quality of life and
improved mood. Supporting and encouraging the older population to participate in physical
activity is crucial, especially since starting becoming active and doing something you have never
done before can be off putting and make you think twice before taking part. I believe the 3 most
important steps that need to be taken in order to support and promote physical activity are
informing the older adults on the exercisebenefits,

trips and cultural activities) that some families cannot afford.
There was more of a presence of meritocracy a number of years ago, and most schools have made
decisions to end streaming classes. Purely from a social inequity point of view this is a smart
move. We have already established that working class students fare less well so by streaming they
would more than likely be in the one class. Unfortunately Smyth et al (2004) states that streaming
of students is more prevalent in schools in disadvantaged areas which is the case in our schools.
As illustrated in Hart et al (2007) Government sponsored initiatives to raise standards and improve
practice in schools have placed particular emphasis upon the need to differentiate by ability . DEIS
schools have a stem test for students entering the schools at the beginning. It is clearly evident that
the brightest students are put in a higher level of class with a breakdown of other students
afterwards. The schools reproduce such inequality that even those students that the test do not

27. The Bible By Abel Cain And The Other Abel
In the Bible there is a story of two brothers, one called Cain, and the other Abel. Cain and Abel
were the first humans created by Adam and Eve, who, according to the Bible, were the first
humans created. A day came when Cain and Abel both went to make an offering unto God of
their harvest and flock. Cain s offering of his first harvest of fruits was rejected by God but Abel
s flock was not, and out of hatred and jealousy Cain violently slew his brother. Humanity is not
supposed to behave violently towards one another. Before Cain and Abel, human blood had
never been spilled in vain, and from the spewing of Abel s blood the evil tendencies of man were
unleashed into the world. Prior to Abel s murder, there was no war, man had not fought and sword
had not been raised. It was from Cain punishment, which struck the feeling of hatred and the idea
of war to solve problems. The Vietnam War, also known as the Second Indochina War, was a
military struggle fought in Vietnam from 1959 to 1975 between the United StatesForces and the
Vietnamese army. Vietnam was the first significant war lost by the United States of America. It
was the first war to be broadcasted nightly through television sets across the nation. The Vietnam
war was not favored by the majority of Americans, partly because of the compulsory draft and anti
war culture of America. The aftermath of the Vietnam War is the subject for many texts by several

In the world today their has been a surge of scientific, political and economical forces hurdling to
prove and disprove the existence of global climate change. I assert that the symptoms that our
planet is suffering are the truest indications to justify worrying about our collective future on this
land; which I will present in terms of how the ecology is being effected by global climate change. In
an article reporting the findings of a study conducted in Israel by Tarryn Schuldiner Harpaz and
Moshe Coll entitled Effects of Global Warmingon Predatory Bugs Supported by Data Across

Less profitable firms or high debt firms could use SER disclosures to legitimise activities to
lenders and shareholders (Haniffa and Cooke 2005). SERs can be used by managers to frame how
Financial stake holders interpret financial information, specifically to manipulate stakeholders
reaction to disappointing financial reports, by changing the focus and constructing a
disconfirmatory effect on the financial figures (Neu et al., 1998, p.270). Qualitative positive
disclosures with quantitative negative disclosures (Gibbins et al., 1990) can be used as a method
to down play managerial incompetence and persuade financial stakeholders to excuse past
mistakes by using their ethical or socially responsible displays to compensate. This is a contrasting
view to legitimacy theory which emphasizes an organisations need for actions to be perceived by
stakeholders as legitimate (Deegan and Unerman, 2011). In this instance, SERs are used as a
method to manage a situation when the expectations of stakeholders are not met. When an
organisation fails to be perceived as legitimate, they use SERs to demonstrate that it can only
improve upon its past actions and regain legitimacy.
A factor influencing management to produce SERs would be to attract investment funds and take
advantage of the practical market for ethically responsible investment funds (Deegan, 2002). If an
organisation can demonstrate favourable environmental performance they are more likely to be

But when North Carolinians see a manatee which may be rare to see why would they wish to see
one entangled in a net. These poor animals are already endangered why does it have to be made
worse by commercial fishermen. Manatees are aquatic mammals kind of like whales they are the
gentle giants of the Intracoastal waterway. Manatees are like the whales of inshore but unlike
whales manatees are more inept to being harmed by humans and the fishing. Sea turtles use both
inshore and offshore waters so they are always in danger from the fisheries from being run over by

ASSESSMENT OF BOD, COD AS ORGANIC POLLUTION INDICATOR LEVELS OF
VARHALA LAKE ABSTRACT Lakes are of great importance both from the natural and
economic point of view. Lake water is a source of drinking and domestic water supply for people
living in and around the area. The present study was conducted to assess the organic pollution
indicators like BOD, COD and DO. The sampling of water was based on human and aquatic
activities around the lake. Water from five sampling stations of Varhala Lake was monitored for
seasonal variations from May 2011 to April 2012. The BOD was positively correlated with COD
of 0.609, as both are the products of oxidation. The correlation between DO and BOD, gave a
negative relationship of 0.517 between two variables. Keywords: Water quality monitoring;
pollution indicators; Varhala Lake INTRODUCTION Most of our water resources are gradually
becoming polluted due to the addition of foreign materials from the surroundings. Rapid
urbanization and industrialization has put a lot of pressure on the existing water bodies (Waziri
et al., 2009; Sawant and Telave, 2009). Anthropogenic development and changes around lakes
affects their ecosystems (Mouri, G et al 2011). Lakes have a complex and fragile ecosystem, as
they do not have a self cleaning ability and therefore readily accumulate pollutants (Abida et al

What is High Speed Rail? Although there is no universal and authoritative speed definition for
High Speed Rail (HSR), the threshold can be found in many administrations or official

of 250 kilometers per hour (kph) (150 mph), or Existing lines upgraded to speeds of 200 kph
(125 mph), or Upgraded lines whose speeds are constrained by circumstances such as topography
or urban development. High Speed Rail in the World The world s first high speed rail line,
between Tokyo and Osaka, Japan, was built in time for the 1964 Olympics. Known as the

Because God has been revealed in the history of oppressed Israel and decisively in the Oppressed

viewed Gollum s voice as intrinsically linked to his physicality, with Gollum s body being
controlled by the ring and then his voice and the gollum sounds he makes being an involuntary
manifestation. Accidently, Serkis used his own pet cat to create Gollum s distinctive voice. He
noticed how when his cat threw up a furball, it was like the whole body writhes from the tip of
the neck to the tip of the tail and convulses. And you see this ripple goes down its spine (cite
NPR). Although Serkis started with Gollum s voice, the character s voice and his physicality were
always linked. This technique is reminiscent with our own experiments with animal masks in class.
While working on our character pieces, we picked an animal that matched that character and then
experienced the character as that animal. This method proves to be incredibly helpful because it

In 2015 the United States produced an average of 9.4 million barrels of crude oil a day, a rate of
production not seen in over 45 years (EIA, 2015). In 2008 production averaged 5 million barrels
a day. This drastic increase in production can be attributable, in part, to advances in hydraulic

technology has been in use for over 6 decades, but has otherwise contributed relatively little to
total crude oil output. In 2000 23,000 hydraulic fractured wells produced 102,000 barrels of oil a

A 2008 assessment by the United States Geological Survey (2013) of Bakken shale formation
determined that an estimated 3.65 billion barrels of oil were technically recoverable. A subsequent
reassessment in 2013 found the formation contained 7.4 billion barrels of undiscovered and
technically recoverable oil reserves (USGS, 2013). Nevertheless, many in the shale production
industry believe the Bakken formation may contain over 20 billion barrels of technically
recoverable oil (SAFE, 2012).
What is Hydraulic Fracturing? Certain geological formations may contain deposits of natural gas
and petroleum; however, these formations generally have extremely low permeability
(Earthworks (EW), 2016). Hydraulic fracturing is process that increases the permeability of
these rock formations, making the fossil fuels contained within more extractable (EW, 2016).
Although hydraulic fracturing has been in use for over 60 years, only recently has it gained
widespread use. Fracking begins by drilling a well and inserting a steel pipe known as a casing.
The casing contains perforations within a target zone where there is assumed to be natural gas or
oil supplies (EW, 2016). Once the casing is in position fracturing fluid is pumped into the casing,
and injected into the well through the perforations at the target zone (EW, 2016). The rock
formation absorbs the fluid until it becomes saturated, at which point pressure begins to build in the
well, causing

Over the past three decades, China has been undergoing economic reforms and changes to its

variegated form of state permeated capitalism(Brink, 2013), refurbished state capitalism (McNally,

Thus, this paper examines the complications of China s political structure and aims to determine if
it is economically beneficial.
In order to clearly understand the implications of this political structure on China s economy, this
paper will discuss the following sections:
1.What is China s current GDP growth rate?
2.What is China s political structure like?
3.Are there underlying problems arising from its political structure?
4.What is the impact on its economy?
What is China s current GDP Growth rate?
China s economy has been largely influenced by political activities before the 1990s. Several
economic reforms had already been put in to place since 1978 but the defining change was only
triggered in 1992 with the speech by Mr. Deng Xiaoping, where he affirmed the nation of their shift
towards a market oriented system (Chen, Quan, Liu, 2013).
Empirical data represented in Figure 1a 1b shows the rapid change in China s Gross Domestic
Product (GDP) and Consumer Price Index (CPI) that started from 1992 (Chen, Quan, Liu, 2013). It
has a relatively high average GDP growth of 10% per year over the last 30 years and its greatest
increase occurred between 2001 and 2007 with an average of 11.6% (Malkiel, et al., 2008). This
equates to a GDP growth increase of nearly

43. Essay on Evolution Embedded in Symbols
Evolution Embedded in Symbols
Two billion years ago two prokaryotes bumped into each other and formed the first multi cellular
organism. 65 million years ago an asteroid hit the earth and dinosaurs became extinct. Three days
ago, in your notebook you drew a mess of squiggles which to you represented Jackson Pollock s
painting, Number 1, 1948. You wrote the word entropy on the upper left handcorner of the page. On
the bottom right hand side you wrote, Creativity is based on randomness and chance.
This paper is, in part, an exploration of the pictures and words that we place in notebooks; it is an
investigation of the human fixation with the creation of symbols via art and writing. But is also
about how the symbols drawn in one s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In her book, On Beauty and Being Just, Elaine Scarry states that beauty incites replication (4). Like
a history of evolution, a history of human symbolic representation is heavily dependent on the act of
reproduction. This reproduction has manifested itself quite literally. For example, when a painter
finds something in nature to be beautiful, she can reproduce it on the canvas and when a writer
finds a moment to be inspiring, she can transcribe the moment into a set of instructions [i.e. words]
about how [a reader] can imagine or construct [that moment] (Dreaming by the Book, Scarry, 6).
Like sexual reproduction which allows organisms to share their genetic material in order to
continue species and to create new organisms, pictures and words help with a lateral transfer of
cultural information, its continuance and recombination. To create a symbol of something with a
string of words or with an art material is to perpetuate that which is beautiful for future generations.
According to Dennett, before there were words, there were no word meanings, even if there were
other sorts of meanings. (402) Dennett s hypothesis reminds us, at the most basic level that symbols
mean something. To say that there are only a couple of meanings behind all artwork and writing
would be to deny the complexity of the human symbol making and

44. Analysis Of The Book Comic Party Poster Essay
Genres: Comedy, Slice of Life, Manga
comic party poster
Summary: Just when high school nears the close, a Japanese student named Kazuki and his
girlfriend, is pulled by his scheming best friend Taishi into the world of fan comics. As Kazuki s
obsession with finishing his comic in time for the next convention threatens his schoolwork and his
relationships, he must decide how he will use his time or risk losing Mizuki.
STORY 4.1
Tragically, it has been a long time since I watched the show, and clearly my methods changed over
the years. From the fragments I do remember comes a great, clean story of one named Kazuki and
his introduction into Manga (specifically doujinshi) that takes us on a journey through an industry.
When most people think of Manga in America, they might compare it to Marvel Comics, which is
somewhat misleading. Manga is not reserved for super heroes nor to trite concepts that may be
disgusting in America (see The Mask) but yet never quite puts us inside. This is not to say Comic
Party attempts this, rather it expresses the deeply woven nature of the Manga universe that should
give any foreigner a pause before stereotyping the industry negatively.
This is perhaps the biggest appeal and weakness to Comic Party, in that as an educational comedy
it seeks to balance self deprecating jokes with giving its audience a better comprehension of the
work involved, all while not coming off as boring or uninspired.
Whether it succeeds is largely up to you, however

world champions. Initially the Imran Khan s world cup campaign wasn t up to the mark as out of
first six matches Pakistan secured only 1 victory that too against Zimbabwe and a draw against
England (In which Pakistan was nearly defeated but rain interfered). The seventh match was against
Australia in which Imran and his team made a comeback with a victory. Imran and his team

46. Psychological Self-Flagellation
As I sit down reflecting on what topic I will write about, I suddenly realize something ominous is
lurking in the depths of my mind. Dreadfully waiting for another vicious session of self hatred to
reveal itself from the abyss of lunacy, I begin to question my current purpose in life. Am I here
to satisfy the American society and become a cog of the perverse machine know as capitalism?
Am I to please my culture and heritage I was put in bondage upon birth? Or am I here to satisfy
my personal needs which still seem unclear to me despite my want for happiness? No, that dread
never made me question what I am doing here, it only revealed the truth behind my existence as my
own individual through psychological self flagellation. That dread brought the existence of fear and

that streamed down those chubby cheeks every time I wanted to feel important and loved by
those who had abandoned him. Tears, I remember the watery flames stream down my face as

47. Endosymbiosis
The hypothesized steps for the evolution of eukaryotic cells from prokaryotic organisms involved
mitochondria and plastids. Eukaryotic cells classical membrane bound organelles evolved from the
bacteria through a process called endosymbiosis, which ranks amongst the most important
evolutionary events in history. In the early 1960s, Stanier, Douderoff, and Adelberg referred to the
prokaryote eukaryotedivide as the greatest single evolutionary discontinuity to be found in the
present day world While chloroplasts organelles in a plant celloriginated from cyanobacteria
through endosymbiosis as well. Therefore, the process involved the following steps: The eukaryote

The primitive eukaryotic cell was also eventually able to eat prokaryotes, a marked improvement to
absorbing small molecules from its environment ( Endosymbiosis The Appearance of the
Eukaryotes , 2017). This whole process of endosymbiosis started when the eukaryote engulfed and
could not digest an autotrophic bacterium; there is evidence suggesting that this bacterium was
alphaproteobacteria, which uses photosynthesis for energy. This opened up a new trend where the
eukaryote provided protection and nutrients to the prokaryote, and in return the prokaryotic
endosymbiont returned the favour by providing additional energy to its eukaryotic host through
respiratory cellular mechanism. In the long run this became a permanent arrangement in
completing the endosymbiosis process because the endosymbiont lost genes it previously used for
its independent life and transferred others to eukaryotes nucleus as it became more dependent on its
new host for organic molecules and inorganic

48. Jeremy Bentham Utilitarianism
On February 15th 1748, Jeremy Bentham, who would become the chief expounder of
utilitarianism, was born in London, England. Born to two attorneys, Jeremy grew up in a time of
major economic, social and political reform. The Industrial Revolution, rise of the middle class,
and the coming revolutions in France and America were just some major changes Bentham was
able to witness. Entering Queens College in 1760, and studying law at Lincoln s Inn in 1764.
Despite being qualified to practice law, he never did so. Bentham prefered to write matters of legal
reform although, he never went on to publish much of his work.
Utilitarianism was developed in the late 18th and 19th century by Jeremy Bentham alongside fellow
philosopher, John Stuart Mill. Utilitarianism is defined as the moral worth of an action is
determined by its contribution in overall utility by maximizing happiness or pleasure as summed
among all people. Utility in philosophy is defined as actions or behaviours that promote happiness
and pleasure are right, while actions and behaviours that cause unhappiness are wrong. A man of
positive law, Bentham believed morals and legislation could be described scientifically, but they
needed an account of human nature. Human nature and behaviour could be explained and
controlled by two primary motives: pain and pleasure. Bentham believed pain and pleasure not
only act a explanations for people s actions, but they can also define an individual s good.

49. Symbols In John Irving s A Prayer For Owen Meany
There are numerous symbols that John Irving incorporated into A Prayer for Owen Meany. While
some symbols only appear in the novel once, other symbols happen to recur throughout the novel.
Such recurring symbols are the several manifestations of armless figures, which are Tabby s
dressmaker s dummy, the armadillo, and the statue of Mary Magdalene. The most significant
manifestation of the armless figures is Tabby s dressmaker s dummy since its symbolism of Tabby
primarily contributes to the reader s understanding of Owen s belief that he was Gods instrument, as
well as the overall theme of predestination. Tabby s dressmaker s dummy was first introduced in
chapter three, The Angel . One of the first things that John reveals about it... Show more content on

According to John, the dressmaker s dummy was an exact replica of Tabby s body, therefore it
can be assumed that it symbolizes Tabby herself. Tabby is significant to the novel because she
contributes to the reader s understanding of Owen s belief that he was God s instrument. The
novel circulates around Owen s belief that he was God s instrument and the accident involving
Tabby s death emphasized this belief, thus enabling readers to really grasp what Owen meant by
being God s instrument. Since disturbing the angel, Owen felt it was his destiny to aid in Tabby s
death, thus aiding in an act that God destined to happen. Owen saw the accident as God acting
through him to make the task happen, which is exactly what Owen means by being God s
instrument. Tabby s character also contributes to the overall theme of predestination because her
death is what Owen believed was supposed to happen, that s why he didn t feel guilty about the
baseball striking her left temple. Furthermore, the armlessness of the dressmaker s dummy
foreshadows to Owen s predestined death when he loses his arms by the grenade.Without Tabby s
presence in the novel, Owen s poof for being God s instrument and his belief in predestination
would not be visible to the others living in Gravesend, including John. Owen s beliefs impacted
many individuals, especially John and the

Value adding promotions including free gifts, samples, loyalty schemes, or competition are often
overlooked. These types of sales promotions may play a more positive role of adding entertainment
value for what is paid (Wakefield Barnes,
1996). Lichtenstein, Netemeyer, and Burton (1995), on the other hand, classified sales
promotions into price or non price promotions. Notwithstanding, price based value increasing
promotions have the potential to erode the image of the company as consumers often use price as a
surrogate measure of quality (Tellis Gaeth, 1990).
In contrast, value added promotions tend to offer the customer something extra, which might
provide the customer with extra incentives to purchase the product (Peattie Peattie, 1995). Along
that line, the central

premise of the research by Chandon, Wansink, and Laurent (2000) is that the value that sales
promotions have for brands or for customers is related to the value. Several researchers (Henderson,

explain different promotional responses. Following this rationale, the primary objective of this

52. Compare And Contrast Existentialism And Nihilism
Let s say that you had to choose to believe in one of the following schools of philosophies:
Existentialism and Nihilism. What would you choose? You wouldn t take a long time deciding
because these two are significantly different from one another. Existentialism is when you
appreciate life and you live your life passionately; believing that your actions will determine your
fate and therefore you can change it. Nihilismhowever, is the exact opposite. Anything that restrains
you from living your life to the fullest is considered to be nihilistic and you just believe in nothing
because at the end that s worthless. In Grendel, the two most dominant schools of philosophy
presented are Existentialismand Nihilism because Grendel spends a significant... Show more content

and kept attacking every time Grendel tried to communicate. Throughout the novel, we also see
how Grendel passes through the three stages of existentialism designed by the 19th century
philosopher, Kierkegaard. The three stages are called aesthetic and ethical stage and the
