always abide by in

this and don’t want

ideation, depression, drug use, self-

unprotected sex.

JAZZ/RHYTHM & BLUES: Introverted
misfits, loners.

anger, street gang membership, drug

Pop music has to appeal
to all demographics to
allow the album/singles
sales to increase. Star
image is important as it is
how everyone will
recognise a certain artist
and remember them as

Lady Gaga is recognised by her
obscure outfits in both her videos
and at music events around the
globe

To sell music it is all now

media hype of the music
and the music video itself
Many artists promote their music video release dates on Twitter,
so they are able to gain more views for the video, even if it isn’t
that good, but by the millions of followers going to watch the
video allows more people to hear and know about their music.
Implying that they will buy the artist’s music. For example, One
Direction started the hashtag “#StealMyGirlVideo24Oct” to allow
fans to talk about it, which meant the hashtag would trend,
possibly gaining a wider audience for the band’s new music video
Award shows always
seem to help record
sales as the audience
will realise that the
artists that are
winning awards are
good artists, this
influences them to
buy their albums or
singles, hence the
change in the sales
after the award show
Music videos that are shown
on mainstream channels like
4Music and MTV are able to
receive highly certified sales,
like gold and platinum
Record companies work
with the channels so
they are able to promote
their artists and receive
the record sales that they
want to
Some channels, like
MTV, cater for some
genres but not
others, which
doesn’t allow other
genres to be shown
as much
The bribing for
promotion can only
increase the
advertisement on
TV, the television
channel decides on
the amount of
music videos they
show, including a
percentage of
music videos that
the record label
has chosen for
them to show
People are hired to
request songs to
be played which
will increase the
times that a single
song is played
Genres shown on certain
channels:
• The Box – all genres
• 4Music – all genres
• Clubland TV - dance
• Kerrang! TV - nu
metal and pop punk/skate
punk
• MTV – all genres
• Rockworld TV - rock
• Smash Hits – pop
• Viva - pop
Music channels usually only
play high-cost videos from
artists such as Beyoncé and
Rihanna due to their music
video being in the criteria
that they want them to be in
Due to the conglomerates
having more money
compared to the
independent companies
they are able to “bribe”
MTV and other music
channels to play their
client’s videos. This puts
the independent
companies in a less
fortunate position when it
comes to playing their
music videos
Artists are more
successful if their music
and albums are
promoted on MTV,
meaning if MTV showed
independently made
music videos they
would excel in sales
Music channels
cooperate with
conglomerates in
the music video
business to turn
their artists into
stars
Some people only
buy the artist’s
albums and music
because they think
that they are
physically appealing
and not because they
like their music
Album sales are increased if
the artist/band is featured on
MTV
MTV believe that the most
popular and prominent
voice/music video is the
one that will please most
people as a whole, which
is the reason why the
channel play some of the
same music videos over
and over
Due to
mainstreaming
and popularity of
certain things
make people not
think for
themselves as
everyone stops
thinking for
themselves and
they follow their
friends and don’t
care if they
actually like it or
not
Star Image of Britney Spears in ‘Hit Me Baby One
More Time’
 Britney’s star image in her music video of ‘Hit Me Baby One More Time’
revolves around her body and her appearance
Britney’s abdomen/torso area is
showing, which revels a sexual
nature of the music video;
however her two pigtails are
supposed to portray her as
innocent within the music video
as it is usually young school girls,
not teenagers who wear their hair
like this
She is able to
dance, which is very
common in pop
music videos as it is
visually appealing
to the audience if
the performer can
dance

For example, One Direction started the hashtag “#StealMyGirlVideo24Oct” to allow fans to talk about it, which meant the hashtag would trend, possibly gaining a wider audience for the band’s new music video
