This document discusses the Japanese expression "ようになる" which indicates that a state changes into another state gradually over time. express ability or possibility such as potential
verbs.

(some change takes place gradually)

• You can respond to ようになる questions in
this way.
• ショパンが弾けるようになりましたか。
– はい、弾けるようになりました。
– いいえ、まだ、弾けません。
• This expression, ようになる can also be
used to express a change of habit or
acquiring something.
• When you express reversed meaning, you
could simply use plain negative +なる
– E.g. チーズが食べられなくなりました。

• ようにする is used to express that one habitually or
continuously makes efforts to do something or not to do
something.
• ようにする do ~ in such a way that, see to it that, make
sure that, bring it about that
• Dictionary form

• ようにしてください express a modest request rather than
direct request such as てください、ないでください
• ようにした方がいいです express a modest advice rather
than しなさい

6. さき：Ah! Tom, long time no see. Have you become able to speak Japanese?
トム：ah, Saki. Long time no see. Yes, I have become able to speak fairy well.
さき：Have you? Have you become able to understand TV?
トム：Yes. I have become able to watch films in Japanese too.
さき：That’s great. Then, you will be ok to write essays.
トム：no… essays is not…. I haven’t been able to write yet so I want to become
able to write soon. So I try to (make sure to) read newspaper everyday as much as
possible and study.
さき：Do you? That’s good. Have you become able to do something other than
studying?
トム：Yes, I learned a variety of things such as flower arrangement, tea ceremony,
calligraphy and have become able to do a little.
さき：That’s great!! You are more Japanese than I am.
トム：Am I? I want to know everything about Japan. So, I am making sure to
challenge various things as much as possible. I love Japanese food so (when) I
was eating lots, I got fat. Therefore, the doctor told me that please try not to eat
anything when it past 9 at night. It’s a shame.
さき：Oh dear…. But I am making sure I don’t eat sweet things much too.
トム：Well, then, two of us will be on diet, won’t we?
さき: yes, let’s give a best shot!
