3. Holden s Depression in J.D. Salinger s The Catcher in the...
Everybody feels depressed at some time or another in their lives. However, it becomes a
problem when depression is so much a part of a person s life that he or she can no longer
experience happiness. This happens to the young boy, Holden Caulfield in J.D Salinger s novel,
The Catcher in the Rye. Mr. Antolini accurately views the cause of Holden s depression as his
lack of personal motivation, his inability to self reflect and his stubbornness to overlook the
obvious which collectively results in him giving up on life before he ever really has a chance to
get it started. Holden lacks the essential ability to motivate himself, which he needs to survive in

he had spent his entire life hating. But like Mr. Antolini tells him,?You?re a student ? whether
the idea appeals to you or not. You?re in love with knowledge. And I think you?ll find, once you
get past all that, you?re going to start getting closer and closer ? that is, if you want to and if you
look for it and wait for it ? to the kind of information that will be very, very dear to your heart?
(189). Nevertheless Holden has so much personal pride he refuses lower him to that level. For if
he does, in his eyes, he will be the same as all those other ?Phony Ivy League bastards? (85). As a
result of Holden giving up on school, he is unable to proceed with the natural evolution that
must occur for him to move on in society. Mr. Antolini later points out to him ?Learning is a
beautiful reciprocal arrangement. And it isn?t education. It?s history. It?s poetry? (189). His
goal for Holden being to see school as something he loves and not something he is being forced
to do. Mr. Antolini tried to give Holden a reason to be motivated and in which case not to give
up so easily. Holden is quite skilled at citing exactly what is wrong with other people. However
he never acknowledges his own faults. He was sure the entire world was out of step with him. As
Alan Stewart explains, ?Holden seemed to divide the world into two groups. He was in one group,

important resource for the students. The students had a reference to see how to convey information
in written form or how to write expository writings. Having the model allowed the students to be
more comfortable with informational writing and to be able to focus on understanding the content.
The prewriting graphic organizer was used in order for the students to be able organize their ideas
and know what they are writing about before they begin their rough draft. This impacted student
learning by helping them produce a better and more thought out writing. My plan was for the
students to listen to the book being read and be able to get the majority of the information from my
reading, which was also projected on the board. This was not the reality and the students needed the
photocopied versions of the book to finish their prewriting. This turned out to better support the
learners by having that resource available and the students were then able to

7. Chaos In Lord Of The Flies Essay
The quote, Chaos is merely order waiting to be deciphered, by Jose Saramago, explains the
importance of keeping order in civilization. When order does not exist or is not enforced,
civilization begins to collapse or breaks down which, in turn, proceeds to ensue chaos. When
Piggy discovers the conch in the story, Lord of The Flies, by William Golding, he uses it to
establish order on the island, but when he dies order ceases to exist. The first line in the poem, In
A Dark Time, is eerily similar to the boys situation of order and civility on the island. When Piggy
first observed the conch in the beginning of the story he decided that they should use that conch to
preserve order in the tribe. Piggy explains to the group, We can use... Show more content on

After Piggy s death the boys on the island could not be more divided. The boys had split into two
groups, Jack and his tribe and Ralph who is now alone due to Piggy s death. Dark, darker my
light, and darker my desire, (Stanza 3), as said by Roethke. The boys are only falling into deeper
chaos on the island, and are continuing to become more savage. Jack s desires, in particular, are
becoming darker because he proceeds to throw spears and hunt down Ralph after he had
witnessed Piggy s death. This is a great representation of how the boys are becoming more
barbaric with the actions that they are taking. At first the boys desires were to get rescued.
However, now Jack is coming to the realization that they will probably not be rescued and he
wants to hunt down and kill Ralph. Jack starts reinstating to the boys on the island that he is
their leader. Piggy s death is the symbolization of the breakdown of order and the beginning of
disunity on the island. This breakdown of order is clearly delineated in the book. Jack sees the
chance to kill Ralph right after Piggy is killed because Ralph is vulnerable, and alone against
Jack and his tribe. Jack takes it upon himself to declare himself as the leader, I m chief! (Page
181). Jack sees the opportunity to proclaim himself as leader of the boys after Piggy dies and the
conch is destroyed. Jack then proceeds to barrage Ralph with spears in an attempt to kill him,

Ever since the first prison opened in the United States in 1790, incarceration has been the center of
the nation s criminal justice system. Over this 200 year period many creative alternatives to
incarceration have been tried, and many at a much lower cost than imprisonment. It wasn t until the
late 1980 s when our criminal justice systems across the country began experiencing a problem
with overcrowding of facilities. This problem forced lawmakers to develop new options for
sentencing criminal offenders. Unlike jail or prisons, which create an expensive cycle of violence

individual to his or her residence for specific periods of time; in most house arrest programs

restricted freedom. The first is curfew which requires offenders to be in their residence during

12. Summary Of The Poem White Lies
The poem White Lies by Natasha Trethewey, gives the reader a glimpse of Trethewey s
troublesome upbringing in a biracial family during a time when biracial marriage was illegal in
the deep South. Trethewey s poems tend to have a deeper meaning and several secreted messages.
The poem, White Lies, is a prime example of Trethewey s phenomenal work and conveys an
important, and quite dejected, message. Trethewey clearly defines her attitude as embarrassed and
ashamed of her upbringing in a biracial family.
Trethewey begins in lines 1 through 6 by telling the readers about the lies she told as a child. She
explains to the readers that these lies were just white lies and nothing more than that. In lines 1
through 6, Trethewey says, The lies I could tell, /when I was growing up /light bright, near white
/high yellow, red boned /in a black place, /were just white lies. The literal definition of a white lie
is, a harmless or trivial lie, especially one told to avoid hurting someone s feelings. Though,
Trethewey includes a double meaning within her title, White Lies. The author is clearly
referring to herself by using color imagery when she says, The lies I could tell, /when I was
growing up /light bright, near white /high yellow, red boned /in a black place, /were just white
lies. These white lies are about Trethewey hiding the fact that she comes from a biracial home in
the deep South because of how embarrassed and ashamed she is of it.
Furthermore, Trethewey further conveys her message of embarrassment and ashamedness of her
black culture and biracial family in lines 7 through 18. Trethewey speaks of how she would tell
white lies about where she lives in lines 7 through 11. The author states, I could easily tell the
white folks /that we lived uptown, /not in that shanty fied shotgun section /along the tracks.
Trethewey is using alliteration when she says, not in that shanty fied shot gun section. Likewise,
Trethewey is also embarrassed of her clothing that is homemade by her loving mother. Trethewey
says, I could act /like my homemade dresses /came straight out of the window /of Maison Blanche.
Trethewey states in lines 14 through 18, I could even /keep quiet, quiet as I kept, /like the time a

Charles married Sarah Sally Gwynne in April 1749. Sally s father, Marmaduke Gwynne, was a
friend of the Wesleys (Lloyd 89 90). John was not pleased about the engagement because he felt
that the bond he shared with Charles would be damaged as a result of the marriage. He was also
angered by the fact that Charles proposed to Sally without consulting him, breaking a promise
the two of them had made to discuss all marriage plans with each other before proceeding.
Despite his disfavor of the marriage, John did not hate Sally personally (Lloyd 93 94). Before
the marriage, Charles made her promise that the marriage would not keep him from traveling
and preaching the same amount that he did before the wedding (Tyson 167). Despite this
agreement, his itinerant ministry decreased greatly by his own choice (Lloyd 89). He wanted
Sally to accompany him on his travels, but her duties to the family and her pregnancies made
traveling difficult for her (Tyson 167). The couple had eight children, except only three survived

18. Robert Browning s Dramatic Monologue
Robert Browning was a brilliant writer. The Longman Anthology of British Literature says, More
than any other nineteenth century figure, Browning shaped the poetry of the twentieth,
influencing British and American poets from, Hardy and Yeats to Elliot, Pound, Frost, Lowell,
and Stevens (1322). One of Robert Browning s specialties was dramatic monologues. In his
dramatic monologues, Browning develops his characters really well. Throughout the monologue
Browning shows the true character of the person by not only what the character is speaking, but
also by idiomatic language, patterns of imagery, speech rhythms, and unintended ironies (The
Longman Anthology of British Literature, 1323). A good example of one of Browning s
dramatic monologues is The Bishop Orders His Tomb at Saint Praxed s Church. In this
monologue the main character is a Bishop who is trying to order a very extravagant tomb for
himself. Browning did such an excellent job at the Bishop s character development that John
Ruskin said that there is not any other writing that portrays the Renaissance spirit its worldliness,
inconsistency pride, hypocrisy, ignorance of itself, love of art, of luxury, and of good Latin (The
Longman Anthology of British Literature, 1332). Browning portrayed this in only one hundred
and twenty five lines, which shows the brilliance of Robert s writing. The Renaissance was full of
a love of luxury. People wanted to have the best of the best. Robert definitely portrayed this

20. Sexism In The Chocolate War
On March 22nd, 1972, America finally passed the 19th Amendment which equalized women in the
United States. In 1974, The Chocolate War by Robert Cormier was published, while women
continued fighting against the sexual discrimination that was happening within our country. NOW
(National Organization for Women) was in full effect striving to protect women s rightsas they are
today. This novel not only contributed against the women s rights movement, in some opinions, it
also almost excludes women all together. In The Chocolate War, an immense undertone of sexism
exists as no definite feminine roles are prominent; the women featured in the novel are sexualized,
the boys are barbaric and irrational, and the death of Jerry s mother is trivialized.... Show more

His mother was not given a name, there was no background story given to her, and it merely

this loss is not in any way significant at all. His own father also expresses no feeling of loss or
depression, especially with the loss of someone who would be expected to be the love of his life.
You finish school, found an occupation, got married, became a father, watched your wife die, and
then live through days and nights that seem to have no sunrises, no dawns, and no dusks, nothing
but a gray drabness. (Cormier 64)
Where is the sympathy for his loss? Where is the emotion for losing someone who should be
considered so dear to a husband. Losing a wife is not something to forget or even act like it never

death. The only thing significant about this woman is that she, in fact,

The girl stood in front of a mirror. Her bleach blond hair hung in perfect formation, resting

I want to be in Playboy. She was looking at her own reflection, but she was talking to me.
I had heard her say this before so it wasn t as much of a shock as it was an annoyance.

I said defiantly. Just then she changed her face in the way that only pretty girls can.

22. Analysis Of Bartleby The Scrivener By Herman Melville
Have you ever gone to work and question yourself, Why Am I Here? ? Bartleby the Scrivener is
a short story written by Herman Melville. Melville lived during the Industrial Revolution, which
was a time where workers were not getting treated fairly. Even till now, some workers are not
getting treated fairly with their bosses and getting paid minimum wage. It is still complex for
some people to survive with the money they are earning. When he was a teen, Melville did not
have a stable job so he followed ships around and he once traveled from New York to England and
back. During this time was when it was popular for people to get the oil from whales. Herman
Melvillewrote Bartlebybecause he wanted to inform readers how the work style was like back in
his days. In this story, Herman Melville wanted to relate his life to Bartleby and relate it to
society. He wants people to appreciate the life they have now since it was not easy back in the
days. As profounding as life seems to be now, back in Melville s time people had to find or hunt
their necessities instead of buying them, like oil. Life was difficult for Melville as a teen when
he lost his father and was put in debt so he had to work hard in order for his family to be stable
again. In Bartleby by Herman Melville, the narrator is the lawyer who owns a law firm. He has
two workers but one only functions in the morning and the other one only functions in the
afternoon. The lawyer hired Bartleby and gives him a space in the

Colonization was such an important prosses to the world we live in today. Explorer would cross
the ocean and overcome many obstacles to try to find new land for their countries. The lands that
they did find were distinct in many different ways. The English, French, and the Spanish each
had unique settlements and geography. Each one had different governments, and religions.
Lastly, each colony had separate and different relations with the Native Americans. Each of
these three colonies had very different settlement patterns, and geographies. First most of all the
English colonies were created by the royal people of the colony, and were settled in Quebec,
Montreal, and Louisiana. Some of the very first trading s began were in Virginia and
Massachusetts, but then they all began to spread. On the other hand, in France the first colonies
that they began to trade with was in Newfoundland, but then continued with places like parts of
Canada, and the Mississippi River. Lastly, Spain has the longest colonization story. Colonization
in Spain began in 1492 when Christopher Columbus sailed the ocean blue looking for India but
ended up in Central America, which became a thriving colony of Spain becoming a huge value
due to the cash crop of sugar. He was looking for ways to become rich and spread the Catholic

24. The Impact of World War I on Canadian Economic Development
Introduction
World War I has had traumatic effects on the countries that participated in it in terms of
many aspects such as the tremendous amount of debt and war costs that they had to
encounter at the end of the war. Such effects were usually long term in nature and were
most strongly reflected in the form of changing political, economic and social structures,
and public opinion across those participant nations or even other parts of the world for
decades even after the official end of World War I
.1
At the end of the War, changes in political structures were evident in many countries,
especially those in Western Europe, as they began to adopt more liberal forms of
government. In addition, the optimistic outlook and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

I. Preceding Years of the War
During the preceding years of WWI, Canada had little doubt about the power and
importance of its own Empire, Great Britain, home to the world s greatest industrial
power and highest concentration of capital before WWI.7 Thus, as a young country
dependent on the political and economic relations with Britain, its economic growth was
closely correlated to the economic well being of its Empire. As a result, Canada
25. possessed an optimistic outlook on its economic development that came not only from its
own growth but from its participation as a member of the Empire of nations of the
world s greatest industrial power. 8
A sharp recession took place in the nation in early 1913 that marked the end of a cycle
that Canada was closely linked to which was the long cycle of international prosperity
that had begun in the late 1890s. Economists at the time argued that this recession was
due to a tightening of credit on the London money market.9 As a result, money became

29. Red Figure Fish Plate Analysis
The different forms of early art from ancient Greece and Rome were not only used in grand
objects such as architecture and sculpture. Much art was government sponsored and intended for
public display, which instilled a sense of pride. Greeks and Romans also used art to decorate other
commonly used day to day items. Some examples would include pitchers, funerary kraters, and
vases. In the case of this article the Red Figure Fish Plate. The plate or platter demonstrates that
although it is over two thousand years old, the people from that time in history found it important to
incorporate art into many parts of their lives. Even to the point where it is used to decorate things
they used in their house or the houses themselves. This particular piece is important because of the
detail and sophistication in which it was made. There are many examples of ancient pottery and
everyday items that anthropologists have found over time. Most frequently though they are crude

31. The Rights And Roles Of Women
The rights and roles of women in Chinese society have gone through drastic changes over the past
couple centuries. From the age of foot binding to communism today, women have had to adjust
repeatedly to the changing values and customs of China. Women have been bound by obedience
and traditions. From centuries ago, men have been considered the core of the family. Early records
of women only exist to indicate the problems they created for men. Confucius greatly influenced
the role of women in their family. He emphasized family virtues like filial piety. Women s roles
were mostly kinship roles: wife, mother, sister, daughter, daughter in law, and mother in law. These
roles established that women had to go with the wishes and needs of the closely related men.
Women had to listen to their father when young, their husbands after marriage, and sons after
husband s death. Chinese women have had to go through male dominance from birth and fail to
receive proper treatment in both social and physical aspects. However, in the rise of the new
century drastic changes are seen in the treatment and roles of Chinese women. The harshness and
cruelty of Chinese society on females is seen throughout Chinas history up till the mid 1950s when
Mao demanded equality. During the late 19th and early 20th century many girls from poor
families were disposed of by their parents or guardians who either were unwilling or unable to
spend their resources on a female. They were either brought as servants

32. The Nature Of The Good Life
Philosophers have been thinking about the nature of the good life since ancient times. The good
life was a central topic during the ancient period of philosophy. Many people say that the good life
is living a prosperous life full of happiness. There are many different ideologies of the good life and
each philosopher has their own values and beliefs. I decided to pick one of the most well known
philosophers, Karl Marx. Karl Marx s philosophy is by far one of the most looked at. He called
capitalism the dictatorship of the upper class. , saying that it was run by the wealthy class solely to
make profit and maximize their own benefits. The end product and goal of capitalism was simply
economic gain. In this philosophy there has to be organized production, which includes the means
of production, such as factories, facilities, machines, and raw materials. Throughout this paper I
will describe certain aspects of Karl Marx s philosophy mainly focusing on why capitalism is not
the way to road to the good life. A good example of this can be looked at by recognizing the class
struggle between bourgeoisie and proletariat, otherwise known as the upper and lower class.
The bourgeoisie owns the means of production and the proletariats are the labor and means of
production. The relationship between these two social classes is very unique. While they both
work together in a way, and have similar interests, they are completely different from each other.
This is called the relation

The Youth And Their Risks
If you take no risks, you will suffer no defeats. But if you take no risks, you win no victories.
(Richard M. Nixon). In his investigative biography, Into the Wild, Jon Krakauer, expresses that
even though young people can be ignorant and take treacherous risks, these can be used as
knowledge enhancers and can be life changers. Krakauer gives us insight by giving examples of
what risk really are, how people take them, and how it actually affects those people. Throughout
the whole book, there are instances where Krakauer uses real life examples of things that have
happened where people have taken risks and the outcomes of that. In general, one has to take
risks in life to truly find oneself and Krakauer says It can be argued that youthful derring do is in
fact evolutionarily adaptive, a behavior encoded in our genes (182). Krakauer explains that for
teenagers the idea of doing outrageous things comes easily to them because it s only natural for
them. Krakauer explains that for teenagers, doing crazy things is due to the fact that adventure
lives in their blood and this has been going on for many centuries. For a teenager death and
injury seems like a joke, they don t even consider these, the absence of fear of death makes them
feel invincible and causing them to take so many risks. There are so many examples in history of
young people who have left so much behind only to start what they would believe is a new life.

Photoshopping in the United States has a positive side and a negative side. Unfortunately, the

scrolling through the popular news feeds on their favorite social media apps constantly being

teenagers who contemplate suicide the most are the ones who are overweight, but teens who

can lead someone down a deep, dark path. The suicide rate has increased a tremendous amount
over the past few years, and the main reason why is from young females viewing themselves as
fat or overweight. These issues would not occur if the models in retail stores or magazines were
true to their size. If these juvenile children are becoming suicidal from these reasons, the
photoshopping industry should begin to create their models to have those extra stretch marks and

The Ancient Olympic Games celebrated culture and politics as much as athleticism. Examining the
Ancient Games through these lenses reveals a contradiction between fostering national Greek unity
and the rivalries between Greece s many city states. Every four years, tens of thousands of Greeks
from hundreds of different city states came together to compete against each other in sports but also
to conduct politics and important business. On the one hand, the Games were grounded in religion

many prizes from their hometown city state. This often took the form of money, though some
athletes were allowed to dine for life at public expense. One scholar reported that an Olympic victor
from Athens received a cash award of 500 drachma a fortune. Another victor was rewarded with
immediate rights of citizenship. One victorious runner was given a lavish homecoming by his

America. It describes multiple species that have been in danger of extinction, or gone extinct. The
book goes into depth on how these animals came to the brink of extinction and why they couldn t
be saved or the measures taken to restore them. One of the major themes throughout the book was
habitat destruction in forests and aquatic ecosystems alike. This led to the extinction of some species

Wilcove describes ecosystem restoration, where usually humans put concentrated effort into
recreating original habitats to restore indigenous populations. This is, unless a very different
assemblage of species has taken hold of the land and cannot be dislodged, also known as a new
steady state (Wilcove, 2000, p. 12). Wilcove himself joined the effort by studying the impacts
humans have caused on woodland critters. He surveyed an area in Maryland to detect predators
by setting cardboard coated in masonry powder to record footprints. He concluded that there were
six predators: opossum, raccoon, striped skunk, dog, cat, and blue jay. All are animals that benefit
mightily from their association with people (Wilcove, 2000, p. 42). He also mentions how
extensive data can only be collected when looking at the observations of many people over the

In order to reach this population, an email containing the link to the 2014 2015 survey was
emailed to administrators and special education directors from each local education agency or
district. One of the major deficiency with the survey was the low response rate. While over 200
participants were targeted, only 22 actually completed the survey (G. Katch, personal
communication, February 2, 2016). In addition to the low return rate, many participants skipped
questions or only completed the first ten questions. In total, only 16 participants completed the
survey in its integrity. Due to the low response rate, these results are not valid as the opinions of
such a small sample may not reflective of the larger target

42. Rap Or Hip Hop Is More Than Just Another Music Genre
Rap or Hip Hop is more than just another music genre, it is a movement full of more aspects than
one could imagine. The film The Art of Rap directed, produced, and hosted by Ice T, exemplifies
the different aspects and explains the importance of Hip Hop while taking a journey
interviewing many legendary MC s, giving the viewer an inside perspective of this music and
the art of MC ing. This film also heavily resonates with the book Rap Music and Street
Consciousness. Ice T interviews many influential and important MC s in the rap game, both old
school and new school, enabling the viewer to really gain knowledge on the role of the MC.
Three MC s interviewed that really explain the role of the MC is Grandmaster Caz, Ice T, and
Big Daddy Kane. During Grandmaster Caz s interview, he explains how he started out as an MC,
taking his parents old funk and soul records and rappingover the beats. He believes the most
important part of rap is the lyrics, explaining his technique of trying to go beyond what the next
MC is going to do. Throughout the film, Ice T adds in his own commentary about the MC and
being one himself has important points about the role of the MC. Ice T stresses the MC has a
gift of communication and states the MC, Gets everybody s attention with displays of verbal

43. Employee Paid Time
Effectively managing and retaining today s human capital is a continual process that is
affected by every policy, procedure and decision related to people (Brundage Koziel, 2010).
There are benefits of paid time off other than reducing the amount of unscheduled time off. Not
all employers provide employees with paid time off, but for those that do it would be in the best
interest of the organization to have a written policy to prevent confusion. First, employees are
able to manage their work/life balance. If employees have 12 PTO days to use throughout the
year, they will plan to use their PTO according to upcoming events in their lives. Employees will be
able to schedule time off to take care of personal issues and leavesome PTO available

44. The Oversexualization And Objectification Of Women
The Oversexualization and Objectification of Women
On all platforms of media, women and even young girls are oversexualized; thus leading to men
viewing women as no more than breasts, vaginas, legs, or any other body part they prefer. Even in
current television shows, movies, comic books, and advertisements, women are still depicted as
sexual objects, which can damage a woman s confidence. The oversexualization of women s bodies
can degrade a young woman s confidence, and when girls try to boost confidence by dressing or
acting like the women they see in the media, they are reprimanded for it. Girls cannot be blamed for
their sexualization; they are just emulating what they see in the media. On television and in movies,
women are often portrayed as the love interest for the main male character or the succubus that tries
to gain the main character s love through temptation. Most the women depicted in the romances are
white, thin, and busty. Often the attractive female lead has a best friend who is deemed overweight
and never receives any romantic interactions. The only goal the female character has is to gain the
attention of the main character. In other movies and television shows when the female character is
not considered attractive, she must go through a complete makeover before her love interest even
notices her. Once the makeover is complete, the girl s love interest is completely stupefied with her
beauty and instantly falls in love with her. This plot device leads

45. Authority in the Public Services
Authority in the public services
Authority means the right or power to enforce rules or give orders. To do this they need
legislations to enforce their laws, to function properly the uniformed pubic services need to have
legislations.
The extent of authority relates to the limit of control held by an individual or organisation. The
limit of control is governed by the job description of the role, as well as the jurisdiction, with
authority coming either from statute or company policy.

we may be attracted to them or respect them.
Position
When we talk about someone being in a position of authority we usually mean that they hold a
certain rank or status within society or within an organisation such as the public services. There
are several ways in which a person could find himself or herself in a position of authority. For
example, a priest has the authority of the church while a mother or father has parental authority
over children. In the uniformed public services, positions of authority come with promotion. An
officer may be promoted because of certain achievements and special attributes, such as
experience in the service, good character, knowledge of the job, dedication, self discipline and the
respect of one s colleagues. If you join the uniformed public services and are placed in a position of
authority, you may lawfully command team members, who recognise your authority and their duty
to obey those legitimate commands. When authority is legitimate, there is no need to influence or
use power. Indeed, if a senior officer were unable to gain the respect of a team member by
command alone, then there would be no recognisable authority.
For someone to be placed in a position of authority they should have power and
