Being A Deranged Killer
You just killed your own father with a kitchen knife, you don t even know you did it but there he
is dead right in front of you. Now imagine that the whole world views you as a deranged killer. By
doing this act that you can t even remember the whole world is put against you and leaves you in a
mental ward to be with your thoughts alone. To just sit there and think about that heinous crime. Is
there something that you could have done to fix this? Is there something that someone else could
have fixed this, this thing that s wrong with your head that you can t even explain? All the doctors
in the mental ward are calling it schizophrenia. A mental disorder that sneaks up on you and seizes

sudden his mood changes and he begins loosing friends, he quit his band, then he became

His mom tried to help him out but the doctor said he had schizophrenic symptoms and gave him
anti depressants to help him. This didn t help, he began stealing his mother s Adderall pills. He
couldn t hold a single job. So his mother kicked her schizophrenic son to the curb to deal with the
problems. So he then moved in with his dad. As you can tell by how this story ended it didn t
help him at all. He only became worse and worse and it lead to him having violent outbursts,
breaking furniture. Then eventual he had an outburst and killed his own father by stabbing him
50 times. It is hard not to feel bad for this kid. McClelland also states that Houston isn t the only
person in his family that had to deal with schizophrenia. Apparently he wasn t the only one with
mental health in the family. How could he have been helped? McClelland then goes on to state
all the ways that the options that he could have received are flawed and showed be revised. He
starts with how the police can help but even with their help things can get violent. Police can come

Social Impact Of Industrialization In Germany
Mia Allen
HST 102
Paper 1: Industrialization in Germany and its Social Impact
The industrialization of cities, such as Berlin, greatly increased the price of living for the
working class. Because of this, children who were a cheap source of labor, were often times
expected to work daily for meager earnings. This process is exhibited in the engraving titled
Orphan Girls and Boys in a Welfare Institution. The images are set in Germany in 1846 and
display orphaned girls working in a sewing factory and boys working in a textile factory. This
depiction of boys and girls speaks volumes about gender roles when it comes to social standing
and job opportunities. In addition, these images show a very idealized version of child labor and
industrialization and argue that children should be a source of cheap labor to reduce the cost of
production and be separated based on sex. Many other sources such as Dronke s Excerpts from
Berlin and The Communist Manifesto by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels juxtapose this
interpretation. The conflicting viewpoints of industrialization and gender roles will hence be
analyzed in relation to the engraving and child labor in Germany in the 1800s.
The industrial revolution began in England in the 1770s and expanded to areas in Prussia and
Bohemia by the 1840s. The scope of industrialization was huge and forever changed the landscape
of modern society by increasing production, national wealth, and technological advancement.
However, it also resulted

Ordinary Political Participation
After analyzing the spectrum of environmentally related political activity, I found out that I am
an ordinary political participant. I do not fall that closely into this category but it was the closest
to where I stand. In regards to keeping up with what is happening in the media as in the news, I
do not do much of that anymore unless it is on social media. Ever since my senior year in my
undergrad I stopped watching the morning news mostly because I have very busy since then
especially with school and work . I found it satisfying watching the news first thing in the morning.
Even though now a day there are things that I as an adult should keep up with that could hinder my
surroundings. In my belief pretty much a lot of the news today is about

Nobodies Casualties Case Study
In Nobodies Casualties, Hill discusses two cases that involved the unlawful acts involving gun
violence amongst young black males. The first case Hill discussed was the murder of 17 year
old Jordan Davis of Jacksonville, Florida. The young black teen had been at a local gas station
when apparently the music from a car he was in was too loud the perpetrator asked Davis and his
friends to turn it down so he could concentrate Davis refused, and an argument broke out between
the perp Michael Dunn and victim Jordan Davis. The driver of the car Davis was in had returned
from inside the store entering the car and starting to drive off while the two remained arguing,
Dunn took out his gun and fired multiple shots into the car where Davis had been... Show more

this being a law this makes African Americans an easy target to enact these crimes on. The reason

India and Pakistan Negotiations
There have been numerous negotiations taken place between India and Pakistan since 1947. They
have ranged from inconsequential issues such as Border Railway Crossing and Time Tables to
highly disputatious ones like National Security interests including Nuclear Confidence building
measures and to the highly infamous Kashmirissue.
Before discussing the negotiations which occurred over the Kashmir issue, we need to know the
origin of the Kashmir problem!
A Walk into the History
After the departure of the British Empire from the Indian Subcontinent, it led to the formation of
two different countries India and Pakistan along religious lines (Hinduism and Islam). (Kux, 87)
These two new dominions had around 650 states run by princes. Theoretically these states had the
option of choosing either of the countries or remain independent. By remaining independent they
would have let monarchy leap over democracy. These independent states were advised by the
British Government to get associated with either of the two dominions keeping in view the
geographical and other relevant considerations, for the sole purpose of securing their defence,
foreign relations and other specified matters.
One of these newly independent states was Kashmir, which according to its geographical
positioning had the option of choosing either of the two dominions but there lied a problem which
was, the ruler of Kashmir was a Hindu believer but the majority of the population in Kashmir was
Muslim. Being

Canada s Power Regime Changes From New Face And New...
As Canada s power regime changes to a new face and new political party, the nation state receives
a new vision. A new movement is introduced for establishing Canada s name socially,
economically, and politically in its global relations. Canada has experienced this in the face of
newly elected Prime Minister Sr. Justin Trudeau. Particularly inquiring of the dialogues exchanged
within the conversation between Sr. Justin Treadeau and a press reporter in regards to a taxpolicy
change that appeared to have a concealed contentious issue. The PM s progressive plans aim to be
for the wellbeing of Canadian society and building the pavement for a prosperous economy.
Although Trudeau s interior motives may be for the common good, for example to combat
inequalities and class hierarchies between the Canadian citizens, his plan however may only be
justice for some citizens and unfairness for the others. Analyzing this argument in accordance to
the Rawls principles of justice as fairness, and Locke s interpretation of individual rights and
liberty to identify the rudimentary flaw in this exchange and the defense will be the aim of this
paper.
The exchange addresses Trudeau s new policy plan, which is attempting to give a tax break to the
middle class by taking away from the upper class or high income citizens, which in essence seems
to be resulting in resentment. On your tax plans, you talk about bringing people together but in
some ways it seems it is divisive policy...... The reporter

It shows that someone is almost never truly alone, yet cannot escape loneliness. This concept
reflects on what society seems like today. We have the world at our fingertips with technology and
social media. A virtual connection to another human being is only a couple clicks away, with our
smartphones and other devices on hand. The total number of social networking applications
astonishes the mind, whether it s Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, FaceTime, and many
others. Technology enables our connection with other people, yet it s never really enough. Some of
us still feel empty and lonely, an unsettling feeling of disconnect. Technology is enjoyable and we
are contented, but there is still loneliness. Theodore became extremely lonely through a divorce
with his wife Catherine. He spends a significant amount of time thinking about her, and there are
several flashbacks throughout the film showing Theodore s blissful relationship with her. He is
dwelling in the present, but he is somehow stuck in the past. In the beginning of the film, he can t
sleep and he engages in a futuristic physicality of phone sex, but without the actual intimacy.

Military Status Protection Covers The Employment Rights Of...
Military status protection covers the employment rights of military veterans and reservists. The two
most important laws that protect the rights of veterans and reservists are the Vietnam Era
Readjustment Assistance Act (VERA) of 1974 and the Uniformed Service Employment and
Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA) of 1994 (Mathis, Jackson, Valentine, Meglich, 2017). In this
paper we are going to focus on the most recent law that effect employers the USERRA.
Part One The Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act of 1994 is a Federal
law that establishes rights and responsibilities for uniformed service members and their civilian
employers. USERRA prohibits employers from making unfavorable action which would deny initial
employment, re employment, advancements, or benefits against individuals from the uniformed
services on account of their military service. USERRA also prohibits employers from
discriminating against past and current members of the uniformed services and applicants to the
uniformed Services (EGSR, n.d.). USERRA is a Federal law intended to ensure that upon their
return from service, individuals who serve or have served in the Armed Forces, National Guard, or
other uniformed Services will be free from discrimination in their place of employment as well as
be able to retain their prior employment and benefits. Typically to qualify for reemployment, the

Marriage By Gregory Corso Summary
Should I Get Married? Is marriage still a thing of happiness, or is marriage just a cultural necessity
in today s society? In the poem Marriage by Gregory Corso, the author implicitly argues whether
marriage is more effectively understood through abstract consideration of love or through cultural
images of love. Corso repeatedly makes the main character question his thoughts on whether or not
he should get married. In this poem there are many different aspects that the author brings into
society s perspective of love and marriage. Throughout the poem you may realize that the
protagonist brings up multiple reasons he should or should not get married, but rarely brings up the
female party in his situation. This poem has a very emotional... Show more content on

The author rarely uses the character to convince the reader of what love and marriage is like and
making this big life decision. Lastly the author mentions, Because what if I m 60 years old and
not married all alone in a furnished room with pee stains on my underwear and everyone else is
married! (lines 106 107). Here the author is using the character to bring an age issue into play
trying to persuade the reader that when we are old, all of our friends will be married and we will
just be trying to take care of ourselves. The appeal of logic does not necessarily make sense in
such a persuasive, but challengeable

The Theory Of Social Contract Theory
Social Contract
Brian Horvath
Cleveland State University
Business Society Government
The concept of social contract theory is that in the beginning man lived in the state of nature. They
had no government and there was now law to regulate them. There are three main philosophers
Thomas Hobbes, John Locke, and Jean Jacques Rousseau that are best known for the social contract
theory. In the twentieth century moral and political theory with John Rawls Kantian version of
social contract theory and was then followed by David Gaunthier. Feminists and race conscious
philosophers have argued that social contract theory is an incomplete picture of our moral and

Another is Hobbes argues is that humans are not only self interested but they are reasonable; he
believes people have it in them to be rational when they pursue their desires. Rationality is an
instrument that sums up the best means to whatever ends we might happen to have. As we
learned Hobbes believes men are naturally self interested and also rational so then this means
they will listen to the authority of a Sovereign this way they can live in a civil society that shares
a common interests with them. An argument he uses for this is the State of Nature of men. State
of nature is when men are only self interested so they are more or less equal to one another.
Hobbes believes that in a society that runs off a State of Nature would be brutal to live in,
because everyone is always in fear of losing their life to another person in this state. Since men
are reasonable they can find their way out of this society by recognizing the laws of nature. The
laws of nature can show people in a harsh society the means it takes to escape a State of Nature
society and create a civil society. The most important thing to understand when talking about the
laws of nature is that everyone must be willing to pursue peace while also continuing the right to
pursue war only when others do not pursue peace. Being

The Importance Of Civil Rights In The United States
Throughout the history of the United States of America, various groups have risen to demand equal
treatment under the law. In many cases the treatment they were seeking was in part pursued based
on the fact that they believed they were entitled to as a American citizen. In many instances these
groups were successful in advocating their position based what they felt were their rights under the
Constitution of the United States. Some of the rights sought were based on civil right, and some
were based on civil liberties. Each time a group or an individual has risen to protect such rights;
they have been met with considerable opposition from the many who interpret such rights
differently. A great many lives have been lost in the continued pursuit

Often groups will leverage civil liberties protections to make their case for acceptance or to gain
political clout to progress their cause. The pursuit of such an advantage means that a decision of
which fundamental value will be used to advance the issue. Some of the values that provide the
best argument are often competing with each other. The Value of Freedom, or complete absence
of restrictions or barriers, is a concept that was relevant during the times of slavery but is in
direct conflict with the concept of order. Order is achieved by erecting restrictions and barriers.
However the very order reduces the purity of Freedom. The most commonly pursued value is that
of equality. The desire for equality has driven groups to organize effectively and make the case to
end slavery, and eventually capitalize on legislation that created the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
Though Freedom, Equality and order can be mutually compatible there is tension among

Exorcism And Harijan Possession During Modern Society
t.Catholic Exorcism and Harijan Possession in Modern Society
What is the importance of Catholic exorcism and Harijan possession rituals in today s society?
Each group of people still practices rituals of exorcism, and although there are some differences
between each practice, there are more similarities than variations. There is a sense of importance in
the very fact that exorcism and possession practices are still happening in the present day in
America and India, and they are strongly linked together despite rarely being a part of mainstream
society. Each practice involves ways of healing perceived problems for both groups of people and
mirrors other issues within their respective societies.

In an online article from the Catholic Education Resource Center, author Paul Burnell interviews
exorcist Father James LeBar, who explains that people suffer the phenomena without actually
being possessed. An exorcism is primarily used for people who are possessed by the devil.
Burnell also interviews psychologist Father John Hampsch who credits the recent rise in people
claiming to be possessed to their involvement in the occult, with practices such as Ouija board or
tarot cards or some kind of New Age practice. The other form is through some kind of sin
addiction such as alcohol, drugs or pornography. For Catholics, there has been an increasing amount
of claims to possession, while priests have at the same time emphasized their doubts that most of
these possessions are worthy of actual exorcisms.
Within the Catholic community, there has been a change in the exorcism ritual in the past several
years that reflects the influence of dominant scientific thinking. According to an article titled
Exorcism Rite Reformed by Crista Kramer von Reisswitz, this ritual change was made public at a
Vatican conference in 1999 in which Cardinal Medina explained that exorcists must distinguish
between the truly possessed and those who are suffering from hysteria or mental illness (Kramer
von Reisswitz). Kramer von Reisswitz also explains that the document encourages pastors to use

The Argument For The Legality Of US State Laws
Right now, somewhere in the world, in the united states, and even this specific state, there is
thousands of innocent dogs living in inhumane conditions that are unfit for healthy substance. They
do this legally, and illegally, and those doing it legally are almost the worst because state laws
condone it. The legislature recognizes that they specifically include, and exclude specific
requirements, or restricts entirely. These dogs not only life in obscene conditions, but they are also

commonly known chains. There are so many ways everyone can help stop this trend. Stop

Working with the Service Learning team has shown many of my classmates just what exactly
the real world looks like. For many of them I assume this was there first time doing a project of
this nature and seeing this sort of chaos. Luckily for many of them this project was handled

very noticeable that their efforts were halfhearted, and quickly they would back out of

condescending it s by no means meant to take away from their efforts. They all showed up when

well there is, women are heavily pushed away from mathematical careers due to multiple factors.
Although there are not many females in the math field, the ones that are bring different ways of

Persuasive Essay On Juvenile Justice
When it comes to the age limit of children who go to the juvenile court, and the kind of crimes that
are to be judged by the juvenile court, a lot of controversies are seen. Going into details, we realize
that these controversies originate from the concept that the system wants to make sure that these
childrenthough still in the growing stage end up being changed into better individuals. Adding the
fact that children are the ones to be judged, it makes it more difficult to condemn them because a
lot of factors come to play from psychology to the emotions surrounding the case. But, I will base
myself on the fact that at the end of everything, the most important is that we want these children to
be better individuals and not commit any crimes in the future. Though it is generally accepted that
sending children to a juvenile prisonor facility is a better punishment, the juvenile system is not
enough to provide discipline to all the children they receive, hence not necessarily guaranteeing a
better future for these children and the society.

Terrified and petrified is how Curtis described his

What Mysterious Effect Does Calcium Found In Every Milk...
What mysterious effect does calcium found in every milk carton have? The answer to this question
will be explored throughout the essay. Today, there are many people who want to know the
numerous benefits of drinking milk. So what exactly are they? Extensive research has shown that
milk is healthy for humans and contains very important nutrients and vitamins, so everyone should
try to drink milk. In addition to the nutrition, milk is vital to growing children and even to those
that have digestion issues with milk. As it s well known, milk contains many nutrients like
calcium and vitamins A and D. According to the authors at ProCon.org, [m]ilk is an excellent
source of calcium, which can help build and maintain strong bones and teeth (ProCon.org).
Calcium and vitamins A and D help to build strong bones, so humans should drink milk. For
example, if a child drinks lots of milk while growing up, they will grow up into an adult with a
strong bone structure and lower their risk of bone disease, such as osteoporosis. For a growing
child, milk has many kinds of nutrients that are important and needed. Erlich Rita writes that [m]ilk

The Ambivalence of Direct Democracy Essay
The California Constitution states, All political power is inherent in the people. Government is
instituted for their protection, security, and benefit, and they have the right to alter or reform it
when the public good may require. (CA Const. art. 2, sect. 1) Indeed, the age old maxim that the
government is for the people is evident in California s Constitution, and the inception of direct
democracyby the early 20th century Progressive movement follows this ideology. The 2nd article of
California s constitution includes three forms of direct democracy: the initiative, referendum, and
recall. Respectively, these forms of direct democracy grant electors the power to propose statutes
and amendments, adopt or reject statutes and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Direct democracy s initiative sounds appealing in theory, but realistically, history has shown that
the average voter is incapable of truly assessing the effects and repercussions of these ballot
proposals. This is clearly exemplified by Proposition 13, an initiative that, as author Isaac
Martin states, became a nationwide symbol of tax revolt (Martin). Proposition 13 essentially set
the property tax rate to 1% and stated that the assessed value of homes could not exceed the
1975 76 assessed value. This reduced taxes by about 57% (californiataxdata.com), a truly drastic
decrease, which translates to a loss of $7 billion in property taxes during the 1978 79 fiscal year
(McCaffery Bowman, 530). Consequently, Proposition 13 led to intense repercussions; the huge
decreases in finances forced local agencies to look for funding elsewhere, and severe cuts were
made. The Los Angeles Times conducted a survey of 70 southern school districts and found that
two thirds of them had eliminated or sharply curtailed summer school. Also, Long Beach school
sent layoff notices to nearly half of its staff of teachers, and by June 28th there was a total of 3,252
estimated layoffs with 165,000 imminent layoffs. The repercussions continued, with prices
escalating to cover the decline of financing. And ironically,

Game of Thrones Essay
The Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin A Game of Thrones is set in the Seven Kingdoms
of Westeros, a land reminiscent of medieval Europe. Fifteen years prior to the novel, the Seven
Kingdoms were torn apart by a civil war, known as the War of the Usurper. Prince Rhaega
Targaryen kidnapped Lyanna Stark angering her family and of her fiancГ©, Lord Robert
Baratheon. The Mad King, Aerys II Targaryen had Lyanna father and brother executed when they
demanded her safe return. Her second brother, Eddard, joined his boyhood friend Robert Baratheon

Each perspective is held within a chapter which, when the characters move away from each
other, allows the author to leave minor cliff hangers at the end of each chapter. While six of the
characters from this first book are from the same family, the perspective is shifted around in
preceding books. Death is common is this book and it s was one of the best things about it
because it played well to the realism of the time that is depicted. Main characters are not safe like
in other novels I have read and this made for very exciting reading. Self preservation is often the
cause for character splits and confrontations, and by the end of the book characters you assumed
you would be attached too for some time are left headless and gutless or simply gone.
The novel, A Game of Thrones, begins with an encounter with supernatural beings; this may give
a false impression as to what will come. As the story begins to unfold, the theme moves strongly
into the area of political intrigue and this forthcoming war that will happen as a result. The
fantasy element, while always there plays only a minor role in the majority of the rest of the
book. A Game of Thrones in not your usual fare, it is hard hitting and bad things do happen to the
good people. Two families take centre stage in a battle for the Throne the Starks and the Lannisters.

Ambivalence In Hitchcock s 1946 Notorious
Hitchcock s 1946 Notorious takes place in the morally ambiguous world in the midst of post
World War Two where the questioning of alliances and moralities have reached a breaking point.
Alicia, the daughter to an incarcerated Nazi supporter, finds herself in the midst of a purgatory
world stuck in between loveand hate, in other words one of ambivalence. In this state of
conflicting feelings of hatred and like for the same individual that results in a state of
uncertainty or irrationality, alcohol, which is the driving force of the story line aims to showcase
the extremes of this transference. This glitch, meaning this a flaw in our thinking, most
predominantly affects ideas of who or what is defined as love, hate and their differences.
Although Alicia is the only one seen as an alcoholic in Notorious, all the characters have a
relationship to this reoccurring theme that results in their undoing. These ideas of emotional
extremes, ambivalence, are always reinforcing and surrounded the idea of alcohol, seeing it as a
destroying force as it is the initiating quality of the story lines and is present throughout. Poe s
Black Cat aims to showcase the existing parallels of this alcoholic glitch as well as the

Paikea In Niki Caro s Whale Rider
In Whale Rider, director Niki Caro crafts the story of a young girl name Paikea who strives to
ascend to leadership in her Maori tribe despite the sexist beliefs of the grandfather and leader,
Koro. Paikea is conditioned to think that something about her birth, as well as her very existence
is wrong; that, if her brother had survived and not her, circumstances in her town would be better.
Koro, even says, When she was born, that s when things went wrong for us. This attitude affects
Paikea, since Koro is a father figure to her. Her dedication to the traditions of old and the

Analysis Of The Poem The Lone Ranger And Tonto Fistfight
Many characters in The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven show beneficial traits,
physically and mentally from telling their stories. The author of this book, Sherman Alexie,
portrays that the art of telling stories opened new avenues for native Indians to preserve or,
more or less perceive their historical and cultural traditions. One of the main characters, Thomas
Builds The Fire tells stories that had historical settings and viewpoints. They offered knowledge
on tribal insights and how Indians have experienced change over the years. Victor, the other
main character in the story also tells many stories about his past, but unlike Thomas Builds the
fire, his stories are more bleak and realistic. Storytelling helped show how the White people
treated Native Indians, and how they fared against each other. In one of the short stories The
Trial of Thomas Builds the Fire , the main character Thomas tells a very interesting story about
all of the native Indians past. Thomas closed his eyes and began to tell his story, It all started

The Stamp Act and the Appropriate Response
The American Revolution was not the consequence of any single event or any single legislation. It
was a result of some combined factors playing against the wellbeing of the colonists and imposed
upon the colonists by the British government. But a series of laws related to taxation which were
passed between 1763 and 1775 can be considered as one of the most important factors which
instigated the American Revolution. It was in respect of responding to such legislations that debate
began on what should be the appropriate nature of such response. For opined that the response to

government which argued that all British subjects enjoyed virtual representation in Parliament,
even if they could not vote for members of Parliament ( STAMP ACT , n.d.). Looking at the
failure of the moderates in forcing the British government to reconsider the taxation process, the
radicals started hinting on extreme measures for repealing the Stamp Act. It is to be noted that
These radical voices warned that the tax was part of a gradual plot to deprive the colonists of their

Conflict naturally occurs in the health care environment. Conflict, in the right quality and quantity,
can produce growth. Conflict in large amounts, or if managed poorly can negatively impact
motivation and productivity (Marquis and Huston, 2015). Conflict resolution is critical to a
healthy work environment, because a breakdown in communication and collaborations can lead to
patient care errors (Johansen, 2012). Conflict I had a conflict with a peer over scheduling. We

As a nurse manager, if this problem were presented to me today, I would try to use collaboration to
address the issue. Getting both sides to recognize and work toward a common goal is important.
Although there are times when this approach may not work due to time constraints or other
reasons. My nurse manager also used the strategy of third party consultation. Marquis and Huston
(2015) suggest confrontation, third party consultation, behavior change, responsibility charting,
structure change, and soothing one party as strategies to manage conflict. This was an effective
strategy to use to assure her and the staff nurses that the conflict was being handled appropriately.
This would be a good technique for me to utilize, as it would give me reassurance of doing the
right thing. How Conflict Management Relates the Effective Leader The effective leader needs to
recognize conflict early, be proactive, actively listen, remain calm, define the problem, and seek a
solution (Johansen, 2012). The conflict I described took several weeks to come to a final solution.
The nurse manager handled the situation fairly, however the time it took to resolve the conflict
allowed for breakdown in the team morale. Unresolved conflict can lead to poor communication
and affect patient outcomes (Marquis Huston, 2015). Summary

focusing on one certain aspect of culture but a broad range of different ideas of society. I think
that this approach may be more difficult because there os so much more that has to be looked at

Continental s internal forecasts indicated that a further decline in passenger volume should be
anticipated throughout 2009, with a recovery in travel possibly occurring by the middle of 2010.
To summarize, adverse economic conditions in the U.S., coupled with the rise in fuel costs, were
dragging down Continental s profits and relief was unlikely through the foreseeable future.
THE DECISION TO REDUCE FLYING CAPACITY AND THE IMPACT ON
OPERATING COSTS
Given the situation described above, management needed to act swiftly to restore profitability.
Several strategic options were evaluated. Since the U.S. and much of the world was facing a
severe recession, the prospect for growing revenues by either raising airfares or passenger volume
seemed futile. Contrary to raising revenue, Continental s managers believed that raising fares could
potentially erode future revenues beyond the present level. Discounting fares did not seem a
plausible solution either, because given the severity of the economic situation a fare cut could fall
short in stimulating additional passenger demand and lead to lowering revenues.
Thus, because management anticipated that revenues would remain flat for most of the year, the
only viable short term solution to restoring profits was a substantial and swift reduction in
operating costs. This could most effectively be accomplished in two ways. First, through a
reduction in flying

Theme Of Imperialism In The Second Jungle Book
The Jungle Books The First Jungle Book and The Second Jungle Book is a collection of short
stories, several of which have the same protagonist, by Rudyard Kipling, published in 1894 and
1895 respectively. The stories that are relevant for this essay take place in the jungles of India and
in a bungalow in the 19th century. The Mowglistories tell the story of a boy, found and raised in
the jungle, whose primal life is full of adventures, all the while struggling with his own humanity.
Meanwhile, Rikki Tikki Tavi is about a mongoose, separated from his relatives, who ends up with a
British family whom he must save from the local fauna. Kipling wrote these, and many other
stories, with children in mind, therefore one might assume that the message is as innocent as can be

Although limited, one can observe evidence of imperialism in the stories in both literal and
symbolic references. As we have seen, the English are the ones who provide safety and
protection for those who need their help, and the animals and Mowgli both represent the
inhabitants of the Raj. While this is the case, imperialism is more apparent in the tale of Rikki
Tikki Tavi than The Jungle Books. It is easier to compare Rikki Tikki s story with that of India s
during colonial times, as the symbols are clearer and the plot seems historically telling.
Additionally, Mowgli share some similarities with Kipling s childhood, both being born (...) a
god among mere mortals, struggling to find a real home. Finally, while some critics praise
Kipling s literature, a few condemn his work for being in favor of the empire, but is this the case
for the Jungle Books? Perhaps so, but it could also be the result of subconscious thoughts that he

The Dangers Of The Atomic Bomb
On August 6, 1945, at 8:15 am America released an atomic bomb on the city of Hiroshima in
Japan, (Hersey 1). This action was done to put an end to World War II, and bring the soldiers of
America back home. For many Americans, the dropping of the bomb meant nothing but to do
what had to be done. The end results were not taken into account because there was no way to
know what could happen when using new technology, (Okazaki). The results of the atomic
bomb alone had a casualty rate of about 135,000 people, of that 66,000 died and 69,000 were
injured, (The Atomic Bombings). Prior to the atomic bomb, Japan had already lost their a
majority of their defense, only had their navy left and was nearly destroyed. From data, we were
able to find out an equivalent to that bomb had more power than two thousands tons of TNT,
(Hersey 49). The excessive amount of power did not help to solve anything, it only created a

Courage In Finding Forrester
Having courage to accomplish a new task may not only be extremely difficult for most, but also
harder for one to apply that courage to go out of their way to an unfamiliar place. In the movie
Finding Forrester, both of the main characters, Forrester and Jamal, portray the idea of courage
throughout the entire movie. Finding Forrester is a classic movie about a forgotten author,
Forrester, and a teenager, Jamal, with a hidden dream. Jamal and Forrester create a special bond
between the two of them through their love of writing. This bond between the two allows for
each of them to gain courage. Through this courage, Jamal is able to share his dream with his
peers and Forrester is able to overcome his fear to help Jamal with a conflict with his... Show more

Since Forrester gained a new sense of courage from his friendship with Jamal, it enables him to
go to professor Crawfords classroom and to stand up for Jamal. Jamal is accused of plagiarizing
a paper that he wrote for Crawford s class, but the catch behind is that the beginning of the paper
is actually Forrester s work. This accusation on Jamal creates a new conflict not only for Jamal,
but also for Forrester. Jamals conflict is to either break his promise with Forrester or risk being
accused of cheating. For Forrester, his obstacle is to either overcome his fear or let Jamal suffer
from his mistake. Forrester builds up his courage and goes to read one of Jamal s writings to the
class, and prove that he did not actually plagiarize. Since Forrester secluded himself from all of
society because of his self guilt, it takes a tremendous amount of courage to go out into an
unfamiliar place, especially to a classroom with a professor who attempted to tear him down by
criticizing Forrester.Movielocity (2000) stated, It comes down to a moment of truth for both
men; for Jamal, a choice between following his dream or betraying a friend, and for Forrester, a
decision to remain closed off or to look at the world through new eyes (p.3). Here, movielocity is
saying that because this conflict occurred, it gave both of the men another conflict within
themselves. For Forrester, it was to either remain secluded or to see the world through new eyes
and to help his friend. Since Forrester gained confidence from Jamal, it helped him to make the
right decision with his inner conflict and go to Crawfords classroom and see the world through
fresh eyes. Jamal also portrays courage when he transfers to a new private school. Jamals
previous school is a normal public school while this new private school is prestigious. Since this
is a big change in atmosphere, courage plays a key role in helping Jamal make the transfer from
one school to

Strengths And Weaknesses Of Human Resource Management
Human Resource Management (HRM) is described as a distinctive approach to employment
management (University of Leicester, 2006:5), which mainly focuses on employees as the key
driving force to achieve organisational success. This qualitative approach differs from traditional
personnel management systems that aim to integrate HRM into strategic managementbeyond HRM
s routine functional role. This integration supports sought after organisational objectives to include
quality, commitment, and flexibility. This paper examines the key HRM function of reward
management, in particular, performance related pay systems, presenting their main concepts, roles,
weaknesses and strengths in comparison to the old traditional pay system.

This created a never ending dilemma for senior managers who could only reward high performing
employees when there was a job available. The traditional system operated well during periods of
low inflation and low corporate income. It was predictable, secure, and by most measures,
permanent. However, it also paid employees in accordance to their length of service, an
unsustainable system (Schuster Zingheim, 1992).
Organizations, hungry for more response options to reward their good employees, have widely
adapted the emerging HRM technique of reward managementthat includes all sorts of monetary and
non monetary rewards in exchange for their performed work (University of Leicester, 2006). The
value of combining base pay along with other performance related pay and non financial rewards
spurs the recruitment and retention of good caliber employees and creates a feeling of achievement,
recognition, responsibility, influence and personal growth amongst the employees (Armstrong,

An Analysis Of James Farmer s Freedom Rides
A hero is someone who will sacrifice themselves, or go out of their way to help people, without
expecting something in return. James Farmer was a true hero because he did all of these things.
James Farmer believed in equality amongst all people, whether they were black, white, female,
or male. His philosophy was that people are not to be defined by what they are but to be defined
as who they are. This philosophy led to the creation of Freedom Rides, in 1961. Freedom Rides
were a nonviolent effort in which blacks and whites, who believed in equality, would get together
and sit on a bus in the South, a place where blacks were not welcome, to desegregate long distance
buses and bus terminals in the South. This was not the first non violent

John Hus Essay
John Hus was born in Husinec, an area of the modern day Czech Republic. He joined the
priesthood in order to escape poverty, and was eventually the preacher at one of the most popular
church s in Prague. Hus was inspired by the writings of John Wycliffe, as well as many of his
colleagues at the University of Prague, and this caused a major split between the Czech s and
Germans who studied at the university. Hus and his faction of Bohemians wanted to expand the
power of church councils, and decrease the power of the Pope, as well as focus on a moral reform of
the clergy, due to the abuses of power that were beginning to take place. Hus focused his teachings
and sermons on the Scriptures, similar to how John Wycliffe had. Due to the effects... Show more

Without their contributions towards idea of reformation, what people see today could be a lot
different. However, it was not just those two men who gave birth to a new age of reasoning and
thought. Men such as Petrarch founded a completely different school of thought than what
Wycliffe and Hus had started with their dissentions. Petrarch delved into the lost classics,
literature of antiquity, and rediscovered many things that were lost when Rome fell in the 5th
century. He is considered the founder of Humanism, a school of thought that allowed for the
return of the pagan classics and the philosophy of secularism. Above all things Humanism is
considered the assertion of a man or woman s personal independence and expression. The idea
that Humanism was one of the major reasons for the causes of the reformation is one that is not
often put forth. However, if Humanism is broken down into its simplest form, it is the idea that a
man can challenge what he sees before him, and indulge in knowledge outside the scripture,
however much John Hus and Wycliffe suffered for the people s right to follow the Scripture.
Because of the beliefs of Petrarch, and his rediscovery of the lost classics, people were able to
gravitate away from the Scripture that had dominated their lives and dictated how they lived their

Essay on Character And Theme In Rip Van Winkle
In Washington Irving s Rip Van Winkle, Rip s character is closely correlated with the theme of
nature and its prominence over the ever changing world. The story is set in the Kaatskill
Mountains, an important setting with a luminance that does not falter throughout. Similarly, Rip is
immediately described as a respectable and well liked man in his mountainous setting. Right off
the bat, the two can be easily associated. The magical elements in the story cause Rip to fall
asleep for twenty years, and upon waking, he is in a world completely changed by the progression
of time. However, despite the extreme alterations, only Rip and the nature that he is so familiar
with are able to prevail, remaining ultimately unaffected by the... Show more content on

Almost as soon as the grand setting is told, the designation of the story itself, the character Rip
Van Winkle, is introduced. He is depicted ideally as well, said to be simple and widely liked, and
most importantly good natured. Without hesitation, it is stated that he is a descendant of a family
who played a more than respectable role in the history that helped to capture and establish the
land that is now his mountainous village. He is recognized as more than the average citizen
already, perhaps one of great influence, not unlike the nature itself. He was, moreover, a kind
neighbor and an obedient henpecked husband. Indeed, to the latter circumstance might be owing
that meekness of spirit which gained him such universal popularity, (Irving 702). Despite this
constant distressing of his spouse, made eminent in the opening pages, Rip was able to ignore the
chronic squabbling and seek elsewhere for loyal friendships, which in turn, boosted his regard.
After some time, however, the nagging became overbearing, and he was forced to flee to the
highest peak of the mountains where he would be surrounded by nature, and thus was at ease with
himself. However, Irving introduces a twist; the nature of the mountains cast a magical command
upon Rip and forced him into a sound sleep for twenty years. When he awoke Rip found himself

learned how they were built. We also got to go down into Cliff Palace. This is a ranger led
program. Our guide was from Tennessee, but he knew so much information about Mesa Verde

morning if you re visiting during the summer. We toured Cliff Palace at 10:30 and it was
complete shade. Cliff Palace is not a hike that you need to take if you have heart, hip, knee, or
shoulder problems. This hike requires climbing down steep stairs and climbing ladders. There is
one short ladder before you get to Cliff Palace, and then there is a very long ladder when you
leave Cliff Palace. Bring water when you come to Mesa Verde, even in the morning. Also be
mindful of altitude changes. Cliff Palace is located at a 7,000 foot attitude. My house in
Tennessee is located at 440 feet. So it s easy to get winded even if you re not really doing that

What Is Artemis Good
Once upon a time, there was a girl name Artemis. Artemis is really good at using a sword.
Everyday after school, she would get better and better at using a sword. Artemis started using a

Both her sister and father persuaded Artemis to join their league, but Artemis never insisted to join

able to defeat both of them and change their minds about being in the bad side.
One day, Artemis got an invitation to join the good league. She went to the address that was shown

Shadow. He wanted to challenge her to a battle in order for her to join the league. Even though she

Artemis was hesitant on joining the team. Shadow said, Members of the league, I would like to

Introduction
Domestic violence in the United States is a serious and grave social concern. Alarmingly, the rate
at which this very intimate violence occurs is increasing. The recent events concerning the
criminal trial of former football star O.J. Simpson have shed light upon domestic violence as a
national and social ill. The fate Nicole Brown Simpson endured is identical to that of thousands of
women who are caught within the vicious cycle of abuse and pay the ultimate price of death as a
result.
Domestic violence essentially affects everyone. It is not merely a personal or private problem
within families. With this idea in mind, just how horrifying are the facts about domestic violence?
According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics (US Department of Justice), a woman is beaten every
15 seconds somewhere in the United States. The FBI reports that domestic violence is the leading
cause of injury to women between 15 and 44 in the United States more than car accidents,
muggings, and rapes combined. Furthermore, the US Surgeon General recounts that battered
women are more likely to suffer miscarriages and to give birth to babies with low birth weights.

the study of aerodynamics and gravity Essay
My topic for the science fair is Which falling objects fall the fastest? . Many factors affect the
speed of aerodynamics such as the different forces on the object. The aerodynamics of the object
and the physics surrounding the object. Great scientists have studied falling objects such as Galileo
Galilei and Sir Isaac Newton. I will discuss their lives, experiments and scientific findings.
Aerodynamics is the study of force on an object. It has been called the science of flight.
Aerodynamics consists of two Greek words. Aerios means concerning the air , while dynamis
means powerful . The wind duct is the basic experimental tool in the studies of dynamics. The three

Why couldn t the apple go up, or left, or right? Why did it go down? In his experiments, he found
that an invisible force is pulling us down and keeping everything on the ground. This explained
why the apple fell down and not in any other direction. Newton figured out that the force keeps
everything on the earth. He discovered that the force even held the atmosphere around the earth.
Newton called this force gravity. For example, when you jump, you come back down to earth. If
there was no gravity, you would float up and disappear into space. He also discovered different
planets have more or less gravity. For instance, Pluto has almost the same amount of gravity as
earth, but the moon has much less gravity than the earth. If you jumped on the moon, it would take
you more time to get down. Since there is less gravity on other planets, their atmosphere does not
keep in much oxygen, thus it is harder to breathe on other planets. That is why astronauts wear
spacesuits, to give them air. Because planets with weak atmospheres cannot hold in much heat, it is
cold on the other planets, except for those close to the sun.
Since we have already figured out who discovered gravity in the physics section, then we will go
straight to what gravity does and how it affects us. Gravity holds the atmosphere. The atmosphere
holds heat and air as well and it blocks us from the sun s harmful rays. Without the atmosphere we
would all die. We would either choke

The numbers are quoted on their
Web sites and in their corporate documents with a tremendous sense of pride. However, becoming
diverse should not be thought of as a goal. In reality it s a train that has
already left the station.
So what does diversity mean in today s corporate world? Many organizations have rapidly become
diverse. With shifting populations in the United States, achieving diversity doesn t require much
effort.
But for many, diversity is still a code word for affirmative action. Many companies have
developed diversity programs, but their only metric for success is measuring the hiring and
promotion of women and people of color. Yet progressive companies understand that diversity
management extends far beyond hitting the numbers or compliance. It includes a wide range of
activities designed to proactively create an inclusive work culture succinctly described by the U.S.
Military s Officer
Training Corp. as an environment that gives all members of the workforce the opportunity to be
productive, without disadvantaging anyone.
Having diversity, while inevitable, does not automatically bring harmony, success and profitability.

Now imagine that the whole world views you as a deranged killer. By doing this act that you can t even remember the whole world is put against you and leaves you in a mental ward to be with your thoughts alone. To just sit there and think about that heinous crime. Is there something that you could have done to fix this? Is there something that someone else could have fixed this, this thing that s wrong with your head that you can t even explain? • 3. Social Impact Of Industrialization In Germany Mia Allen HST 102 Paper 1: Industrialization in Germany and its Social Impact The industrialization of cities, such as Berlin, greatly increased the price of living for the working class. Because of this, children who were a cheap source of labor, were often times expected to work daily for meager earnings. This process is exhibited in the engraving titled Orphan Girls and Boys in a Welfare Institution. The images are set in Germany in 1846 and display orphaned girls working in a sewing factory and boys working in a textile factory. This depiction of boys and girls speaks volumes about gender roles when it comes to social standing and job opportunities. In addition, these images show a very idealized version of child labor and industrialization and argue that children should be a source of cheap labor to reduce the cost of production and be separated based on sex. Many other sources such as Dronke s Excerpts from Berlin and The Communist Manifesto by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels juxtapose this interpretation. The conflicting viewpoints of industrialization and gender roles will hence be analyzed in relation to the engraving and child labor in Germany in the 1800s. The industrial revolution began in England in the 1770s and expanded to areas in Prussia and Bohemia by the 1840s. The scope of industrialization was huge and forever changed the landscape of modern society by increasing production, national wealth, and technological advancement. However, it also resulted ... African American s are already a target in America already so with this being a law this makes African Americans an easy target to enact these crimes on. They have ranged from inconsequential issues such as Border Railway Crossing and Time Tables to highly disputatious ones like National Security interests including Nuclear Confidence building measures and to the highly infamous Kashmirissue. Before discussing the negotiations which occurred over the Kashmir issue, we need to know the origin of the Kashmir problem! A Walk into the History After the departure of the British Empire from the Indian Subcontinent, it led to the formation of two different countries India and Pakistan along religious lines (Hinduism and Islam). (Kux, 87) These two new dominions had around 650 states run by princes. Theoretically these states had the option of choosing either of the countries or remain independent. By remaining independent they would have let monarchy leap over democracy. These independent states were advised by the British Government to get associated with either of the two dominions keeping in view the geographical and other relevant considerations, for the sole purpose of securing their defence, foreign relations and other specified matters. One of these newly independent states was Kashmir, which according to its geographical positioning had the option of choosing either of the two dominions but there lied a problem which was, the ruler of Kashmir was a Hindu believer but the majority of the population in Kashmir was Muslim. A new movement is introduced for establishing Canada s name socially, economically, and politically in its global relations. Canada has experienced this in the face of newly elected Prime Minister Sr. Justin Trudeau. Particularly inquiring of the dialogues exchanged within the conversation between Sr. Justin Treadeau and a press reporter in regards to a taxpolicy change that appeared to have a concealed contentious issue. The PM s progressive plans aim to be for the wellbeing of Canadian society and building the pavement for a prosperous economy. Although Trudeau s interior motives may be for the common good, for example to combat inequalities and class hierarchies between the Canadian citizens, his plan however may only be justice for some citizens and unfairness for the others. Analyzing this argument in accordance to the Rawls principles of justice as fairness, and Locke s interpretation of individual rights and liberty to identify the rudimentary flaw in this exchange and the defense will be the aim of this paper. The exchange addresses Trudeau s new policy plan, which is attempting to give a tax break to the middle class by taking away from the upper class or high income citizens, which in essence seems to be resulting in resentment. On your tax plans, you talk about bringing people together but in some ways it seems it is divisive policy...... The reporter ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Barrett says, We decided that the movie wasn t about technology, or if it was, that the technology should be invisible (VanHemert 2). It shows that someone is almost never truly alone, yet cannot escape loneliness. This concept reflects on what society seems like today. We have the world at our fingertips with technology and social media. A virtual connection to another human being is only a couple clicks away, with our smartphones and other devices on hand. The total number of social networking applications astonishes the mind, whether it s Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, FaceTime, and many others. • 13. Marriage By Gregory Corso Summary Should I Get Married? Is marriage still a thing of happiness, or is marriage just a cultural necessity in today s society? In the poem Marriage by Gregory Corso, the author implicitly argues whether marriage is more effectively understood through abstract consideration of love or through cultural images of love. Corso repeatedly makes the main character question his thoughts on whether or not he should get married. In this poem there are many different aspects that the author brings into society s perspective of love and marriage. Throughout the poem you may realize that the protagonist brings up multiple reasons he should or should not get married, but rarely brings up the female party in his situation. This poem has a very emotional... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Here the author is using the character to bring an age issue into play trying to persuade the reader that when we are old, all of our friends will be married and we will just be trying to take care of ourselves. Another is Hobbes argues is that humans are not only self interested but they are reasonable; he believes people have it in them to be rational when they pursue their desires. Rationality is an instrument that sums up the best means to whatever ends we might happen to have. As we learned Hobbes believes men are naturally self interested and also rational so then this means they will listen to the authority of a Sovereign this way they can live in a civil society that shares a common interests with them. An argument he uses for this is the State of Nature of men. State of nature is when men are only self interested so they are more or less equal to one another. Hobbes believes that in a society that runs off a State of Nature would be brutal to live in, because everyone is always in fear of losing their life to another person in this state. Since men are reasonable they can find their way out of this society by recognizing the laws of nature. The laws of nature can show people in a harsh society the means it takes to escape a State of Nature society and create a civil society. The most important thing to understand when talking about the laws of nature is that everyone must be willing to pursue peace while also continuing the right to pursue war only when others do not pursue peace. In many instances these groups were successful in advocating their position based what they felt were their rights under the Constitution of the United States. Some of the rights sought were based on civil right, and some were based on civil liberties. Some of the values that provide the best argument are often competing with each other. The Value of Freedom, or complete absence of restrictions or barriers, is a concept that was relevant during the times of slavery but is in direct conflict with the concept of order. Order is achieved by erecting restrictions and barriers. However the very order reduces the purity of Freedom. The most commonly pursued value is that of equality. The desire for equality has driven groups to organize effectively and make the case to end slavery, and eventually capitalize on legislation that created the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Persuasive Essay On Juvenile Justice When it comes to the age limit of children who go to the juvenile court, and the kind of crimes that are to be judged by the juvenile court, a lot of controversies are seen. Going into details, we realize that these controversies originate from the concept that the system wants to make sure that these childrenthough still in the growing stage end up being changed into better individuals. Adding the fact that children are the ones to be judged, it makes it more difficult to condemn them because a lot of factors come to play from psychology to the emotions surrounding the case. But, I will base myself on the fact that at the end of everything, the most important is that we want these children to be better individuals and not commit any crimes in the future. Though it is generally accepted that sending children to a juvenile prisonor facility is a better punishment, the juvenile system is not enough to provide discipline to all the children they receive, hence not necessarily guaranteeing a better future for these children and the society. Proposition 13 essentially set the property tax rate to 1% and stated that the assessed value of homes could not exceed the 1975 76 assessed value. This reduced taxes by about 57% (californiataxdata.com), a truly drastic decrease, which translates to a loss of $7 billion in property taxes during the 1978 79 fiscal year (McCaffery Bowman, 530). The nurse manager handled the situation fairly, however the time it took to resolve the conflict allowed for breakdown in the team morale. Unresolved conflict can lead to poor communication and affect patient outcomes (Marquis Huston, 2015). Summary ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. Ethnographic Research Essay Ethnographic research is the scientific description of specific human cultures, foreign to the ethnographer. Each ethnographer has his or her own way of conducting research and all of these different ideas can be transmitted and understood in a number of different ways. Because there is no one set idea of how an ethnographer should go about his or her research, conflicts arise. In Reflections on Fieldwork in Morocco, Paul Rabinow uses a story like process to discuss his experiences during his research in Morocco. This makes it easier for the reader to understand his ideas then just having a technical book about the many different aspects of Moroccan life that he may have discovered. Once I had become comfortable with myself and the language I would pick a part of the society that I would like to focus on. Similar to what Paul Willis s study, which Marcus described in his paper, of a group of twelve boys in a working class school, I would first go straight to the primary source. In Rabinow s book he takes the opposite approach and goes from place to place not focusing on one certain aspect of culture but a broad range of different ideas of society. I think that this approach may be more difficult because there os so much more that has to be looked at and understood. For instance, Rabinow must learn two different languages, French and Arabic just to understand the people around him. Then travel all around Morocco and obtain information on a numerous amount of different cultures. Though this practice of fieldwork has its benefits, describing one aspect of a society goes more in depth. Focusing on one aspect of a culture, I would want to obtain an exact understanding of what these people were doing and how they felt they fit into society. After obtaining as much information as I could from my informants, I would go back to my notes and try to make some sense of them without trying to distort their views of themselves in any way. I would then go to another source of information, in Willis s example this would be the teachers. By getting more then one perspective of a certain ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Specifically, the case focuses on the harsh financial situation faced by Continental as a result of the recent financial crisis and the challenges it faces to remain profitable. Continental s internal forecasts indicated that a further decline in passenger volume should be anticipated throughout 2009, with a recovery in travel possibly occurring by the middle of 2010. To summarize, adverse economic conditions in the U.S., coupled with the rise in fuel costs, were dragging down Continental s profits and relief was unlikely through the foreseeable future. THE DECISION TO REDUCE FLYING CAPACITY AND THE IMPACT ON OPERATING COSTS Given the situation described above, management needed to act swiftly to restore profitability. Several strategic options were evaluated. Since the U.S. and much of the world was facing a severe recession, the prospect for growing revenues by either raising airfares or passenger volume seemed futile. Contrary to raising revenue, Continental s managers believed that raising fares could potentially erode future revenues beyond the present level. Discounting fares did not seem a plausible solution either, because given the severity of the economic situation a fare cut could fall short in stimulating additional passenger demand and lead to lowering revenues. Thus, because management anticipated that revenues would remain flat for most of the year, the only viable short term solution to restoring profits was a substantial and swift reduction in operating costs. This could most effectively be accomplished in two ways. First, through a reduction in flying ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 40. Theme Of Imperialism In The Second Jungle Book The Jungle Books The First Jungle Book and The Second Jungle Book is a collection of short stories, several of which have the same protagonist, by Rudyard Kipling, published in 1894 and 1895 respectively. The stories that are relevant for this essay take place in the jungles of India and in a bungalow in the 19th century. The Mowglistories tell the story of a boy, found and raised in the jungle, whose primal life is full of adventures, all the while struggling with his own humanity. Meanwhile, Rikki Tikki Tavi is about a mongoose, separated from his relatives, who ends up with a British family whom he must save from the local fauna. Kipling wrote these, and many other stories, with children in mind, therefore one might assume that the message is as innocent as can be to suit the young readers. However, in post colonial times, many have criticized... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although limited, one can observe evidence of imperialism in the stories in both literal and symbolic references. As we have seen, the English are the ones who provide safety and protection for those who need their help, and the animals and Mowgli both represent the inhabitants of the Raj. While this is the case, imperialism is more apparent in the tale of Rikki Tikki Tavi than The Jungle Books. It is easier to compare Rikki Tikki s story with that of India s during colonial times, as the symbols are clearer and the plot seems historically telling. Additionally, Mowgli share some similarities with Kipling s childhood, both being born (...) a god among mere mortals, struggling to find a real home. Finally, while some critics praise Kipling s literature, a few condemn his work for being in favor of the empire, but is this the case for the Jungle Books? Jamal is accused of plagiarizing a paper that he wrote for Crawford s class, but the catch behind is that the beginning of the paper is actually Forrester s work. This accusation on Jamal creates a new conflict not only for Jamal, but also for Forrester. Jamals conflict is to either break his promise with Forrester or risk being accused of cheating. For Forrester, his obstacle is to either overcome his fear or let Jamal suffer from his mistake. Forrester builds up his courage and goes to read one of Jamal s writings to the class, and prove that he did not actually plagiarize. Since Forrester secluded himself from all of society because of his self guilt, it takes a tremendous amount of courage to go out into an unfamiliar place, especially to a classroom with a professor who attempted to tear him down by criticizing Forrester.Movielocity (2000) stated, It comes down to a moment of truth for both men; for Jamal, a choice between following his dream or betraying a friend, and for Forrester, a decision to remain closed off or to look at the world through new eyes (p.3). Here, movielocity is saying that because this conflict occurred, it gave both of the men another conflict within themselves. For Forrester, it was to either remain secluded or to see the world through new eyes and to help his friend. Since Forrester gained confidence from Jamal, it helped him to make the right decision with his inner conflict and go to Crawfords classroom and see the world through fresh eyes. Petrarch delved into the lost classics, literature of antiquity, and rediscovered many things that were lost when Rome fell in the 5th century. He is recognized as more than the average citizen already, perhaps one of great influence, not unlike the nature itself. He was, moreover, a kind neighbor and an obedient henpecked husband. Indeed, to the latter circumstance might be owing that meekness of spirit which gained him such universal popularity, (Irving 702). Despite this constant distressing of his spouse, made eminent in the opening pages, Rip was able to ignore the chronic squabbling and seek elsewhere for loyal friendships, which in turn, boosted his regard. After some time, however, the nagging became overbearing, and he was forced to flee to the highest peak of the mountains where he would be surrounded by nature, and thus was at ease with himself. He discovered that the force even held the atmosphere around the earth. Newton called this force gravity. For example, when you jump, you come back down to earth. If there was no gravity, you would float up and disappear into space. He also discovered different planets have more or less gravity. For instance, Pluto has almost the same amount of gravity as earth, but the moon has much less gravity than the earth. If you jumped on the moon, it would take you more time to get down. Since there is less gravity on other planets, their atmosphere does not keep in much oxygen, thus it is harder to breathe on other planets. That is why astronauts wear spacesuits, to give them air.
