Alternate Protection Materials It is difficult for most civilians to have provision for a chemical war. One should resort to any means around him/her to have at least minimal protection against attacks or terrors employing chemical agents if he/she does not have proper protection equipment. It is essential to find alternate civilian materials which can work best for NBC protection. Most of the possible alternate materials showed performance results lower than expected level (lower than the level of protection achieved by standard materials currently used in the military). While the military standard impermeable cloth used for protective suit showed 100 minutes of resistance against blister and 200 minutes against gas, most raincoats - both military and commercial - showed less than 20 minutes of resistance.
42.
Alternate Protection Materials Protective hood, military standard material, lasted longer than 30 minutes while vinyl plastic as alternate material lasted less than 10 minutes. When layers of vinyl plastic were doubled or tripled and additional vinyl plastic cover was added, relatively high level of protection was acquired. The protection capability of Agricultural vinyl plastic increased from 10~20 minutes to 40~100 minutes by simply overlapping 2 or 3 vinyl plastic covers. Adding one layer of vinyl plastic, covers without any protective capability achieved the protection level of 50 minutes. ※ Based on these results we can utilize civilian materials as alternate protection materials.
