Spirometry is a test that measures how much air the lungs can hold and how fast air can move in and out of the lungs. A spirometer is a device used to measure lung volumes and capacities during breathing maneuvers. It quantifies volumes of air inhaled and exhaled over time. Spirometry provides key metrics like FVC, FEV1, and FEF25-75 that can help diagnose respiratory conditions when compared to reference values adjusted for age, height, sex and ethnicity. Proper technique is important for accurate results, including full inhalation/exhalation and minimizing leaks, hesitation or obstruction during forced maneuvers.
