Introduction
• The Spiral Model is a type of software
development model which was first
proposed by Boehm.
Dr. Barry W. Boehm.
TRW Professor of Software Engineering. Organization. University of Southern 09/23/14 California. 7
In this system development method, we combine
the features of both, prototype model and waterfall
model.

Introduction
• In Spiral model we can arrange all the
activities in the form of a spiral.
• A spiral model is divided into number of
framework activities, called task regions.
• Typically, there are between three and six
task regions

Introduction
• Customer communication
tasks required to establish effective
communication between developer and
customer.
• Planning
tasks required to define resources, timelines,
and other project related information.

Introduction
• Risk analysis
tasks required to assess both technical
and management risks.
• Engineering
tasks required to build one or more
representations of the application.

Introduction
• Construction and release
tasks required to construct, test, install,
and provide user support (e.g.,
documentation and training).
• Customer evaluation
tasks required to obtain customer feedback
based on evaluation of the software
representations

Advantages
1. High amount of risk analysis hence,
avoidance of Risk is enhanced.
09/23/14 19
Advantages
2. Good for mission-critical projects.
09/23/14 20
Advantages
3. Strong approval and documentation
control.
09/23/14 21
Advantages
4. Additional Functionality can be added at a
later date.
09/23/14 22
Disadvantages
1. Can be a costly model to use.
09/23/14 23
Disadvantages
2. Risk analysis requires highly specific
expertise.
09/23/14 24
Disadvantages
3. Project’s success is highly dependent on
the risk analysis phase.
