Intrinsic And Intrinsic Motivation
Intrinsic Factors
One of commonly studied types of motivation is intrinsic and extrinsic, and the difference between
them has played significant part on both developmental and educational practices. Intrinsic motivation
remains an important concept, reflecting the natural human susceptibility to learn and adapt (Ryan
Deci, 2000). Intrinsic motivation is defined as the behavior of an individual that is being stimulated by
internal rewards. The motivation to involve in a behavior arises from within the individual because it
is rewarding intrinsically, (Cherry, 2015).
According to Ryan Deci (2000), they distinguish between different types of motivation based on the
different reasons or goals that drives an individual to move. The simplest distinction is between
intrinsic motivation, which refers to doing something because it is inherently interesting or enjoyable,
and extrinsic motivation, which refers to doing something because it leads to a separable outcome.
While indicated that Intrinsic motivation is doing an activity for its individual own satisfaction rather
than for some separable significance. He added that when a person is intrinsically motivated an
individual moved for the pleasurable or challenge entailed rather than because of external urges,
pressures, or rewards.

Stoicism in Ancient Rome Essay
Stoicism made the transition from an intriguing foreign philosophy to a popular practice because it
was taken up by several high profile figures. Scipio Africanus, the original esteemed Roman Stoic
died in 129 BCE, but about 40 years later a new crop of celebrated Romans took up the Stoic practice.
During the fall of the Roman Republic a group of famed orators, generals, and statesmen including
Marcus Junius Brutus (85 42 BCE), Marcus Tullius Cicero (106 43 BCE), Pompey the Great (106 48
BCE), and Cato the Younger (95 46 BCE) all professed themselves Stoics. This group of powerful
statesmen and leaders practicing Stoicism disseminated it throughout Rome. Octavian (63 BC 14 AD)
who later became Caesar Augustus had a Stoic tutor and many ... Show more content on

He had been highly educated in both Greece and Rome. He was also a great intellectual and orator of
his time which would have put him in contact with the people who already knew of Stoicism. He
studied under the Stoic philosopher Diodotus (d. 59 BCE). They maintained such a close friendship
that Diodotus lived in Cicero s house until his death when he left everything he owned to Cicero.
While Cicero considered himself not a complete disciple of Stoicism (he followed some teaching of
Epicurus and Plato) he practiced Stoicism s ideals, especially it s ethics, throughout his life. Professor
and historian Edward Clayton writes that Cicero puts forth Stoic doctrines not dogmatically, as
absolutely and always true, but as the best set of beliefs so far developed. We ought to adhere to them
because our lives, both individually and collectively, will be better if we do. It is essentially Stoic
ethical teachings that Cicero urges the Roman elite to adopt. Cicero urges the elite to adopt these
ethics through his orations and his philosophical writings. He, himself, studied the texts of the earlier
stoic philosopher Panaetius, and this influenced his most famous work: De Officiis, or On Duty. On
De Divinationes, another of Cicero s Stoicism influenced works, the historian A E Douglas writes that:
Cicero wrote at its beginning and again at its end... that he was deliberately seeking relief through
philosophy from the political troubles of the time and an outlet

in the year 1981. He was among the youngest CEOs ever. However, Welch had to make an effort to
change the conditions of the General Electronic Co. The company initially practiced the traditional
system instead of the employee involvement (Welch, J., 2005). Therefore, Jack Welch brought the idea
to shift into the new strategy of the employee employment. This strategy would be a very relaxed
setting whereby, both the managers and the employees would have a chance to implement their
platforms. Jack introduced the Work Out Program. This would adequately diversify from traditional
hierarchy geography. A Work Out Program is an informal meeting that consists of a large cross
functional group that works in solving grievances with no horizontal or vertical boundaries. Since
then, the genius strategy has changed the culture of GE. Consequently, the program created a more
sufficient, innovative company with the active employee participation. Welch knew that the only way
to bring the change was through employee empowerment. The motivation of the 300, 000 employees
inclusive of those in the front line was the first intention of the program (Welch, J.,

A Brief Note On Death And Dying Project

Death and Dying Project
Every culture has their own way to deal with the dying and dead. Some like to bury their dead, some
will cremate, and others will just leave the body in the open. Every culture has their own special and
specific way to do things. Some might mourn and others will celebrate.
In Vietnam when a person is about to die family comes and visits, this is the moment of silence. The
olds son or daughter would then bend over to hear the persons last dying words. At this time the oldest
member of the family would then suggest a new name for the person, because it is bad luck to keep
the same name that you had when you where alive. Vietnamese men usually ... Show more content on

The funeral would normally be held three days after the person had died. On the day of the funeral,
friends and family would have a memorial dinner. Then, on the ninth day, when the soul is believed to
leave the body, a special church service and dinner are held. Fourteen days after the person has died,
the soul is said to depart for the other world, and a service and dinner party are again held. At every
one of these parties, a glass of vodka covered by a piece of black bread is left for the deceased. This
would be the opposite of the traditional Russian custom of breaking black bread when meeting
someone for the first time. Traditionally the person s body would lay untouched and uncovered for the
three days until the burial; however, cremations are becoming more popular because of how
inexpensive they are.
People would wear weeds, or drab clothing in black, to prevent the dead from returning. Covering the
head in a black kerchief and wearing black continues for 40 days after the death. People also cover
mirrors, stop watches, and take the TV from the room where the body lies in wait. When the body is
carried to be buried its carried with its legs extended forward and done so that no part of the body
touches the house on its way out, because of the fear that the dead will return to their home and take
someone with them.

The Psychological Assessment Practitioners
As stated by Foxcroft (2011) the psychological assessment practitioners core ethical responsibility is
that nothing should be done during testing and assessment to harm the client, and that it is their
responsibility to follow ethical practices so that the test takers can perceive the assessment to be fair
and beneficial. This discussion will be covering ethical issues in psychological assessment with an
emphasis on the South African context. We will look at what a psychological test is, what ethics is, the
history of South Africa that has had an impact on psychological testing in this country, and some
ethical issues to consider. In the South African context, a psychological test is classified as such when
the purpose of said test, results in the performance of a psychological act, according to Foxcroft,
Roodt, Abrahams (as cited in Foxcroft. 2011). Foxcroft (2011) stated that a psychological act with
regards to assessment is the use of measures to assess mental, cognitive, or behavioural processes and
functioning, intellectual functioning, aptitude, personality etc. Only registered psychologists are
allowed to perform psychological acts, and the tests devised may only be used, interpreted and
managed by psychologists according to Foxcroft (2011). Because these psychological tests are
assessing information which the client may not wish to be made public, or could potentially cause any
harm or distress on them if these results were improperly used, it is important for

Male Utopian And Dystopias
As Bammer explains, while male utopian writers are mainly interested in broadening their influence
and power and exploring other worlds, women s utopias aim to change their current situation by
reconstructing the power relations that affect their lives. She states that these fantasies are much more
achievable in theory and much more urgent than men s. However, women had no reason to turn to
such a male dominated genre while they had genres more suitable for delving into the private sphere
and its more realistic utopian possibilities (Bammer, 2004).
Bammer points out that although men s utopian fantasies take different approaches compared to
women s, women are far from absent in men s utopia. In fact, women seem to have a central role in

Dystopian fiction is engaged with the argument between the desire of the individual and the societal
demand, emphasizing the sexuality and relations among the genders as parts of this conflict (Brooker
1994, 337). Brooker states that the governments of dystopian societies in books such as We, Brave
New World or Nineteen Eighty Four all use sexuality as the primary tool to control society. Brooker
also points out that despite this consistent focus on sexuality in dystopian fiction, the major works of
the genre have done relatively little to challenge conventional notions of gender roles . Although there
is considerable emphasis on sexuality in dystopian fiction, Brooker argues that conventional notions
of gender roles remain unchallenged in major works of the genre. He observes that even though these
literary dystopias and utopias stress the importance of gender equality, they remain places where men
are men and women are women, and in relatively conventional ways . Brooker brings up More s
Utopia as an example of this trend. In Utopia, women and men are proclaimed completely equal, even
though it is a patriarchal society where men are still the head of the household and women belong to
their fathers or husbands. However, according to Brooker, More consciously tried to provide women
with opportunities for education and work

Dumb Crime Research Paper
Dumb criminals are arrested for many different crimes. One of the crimes dumb criminals are caught
for is robbery. An example of a burglary involving a dumb criminal is with a man named Milton J.
Hodges. Milton tried to rob a Lowes and ran into a nudist spa. He was the only person dressed, and
was easily spotted. He was arrested later that day. Since Milton was arrested, his arrests proves that
people can be arrested for crimes like burglary. In a situation similar to Milton s, a man breaks into a
husband and wife s house. He roots through their pantries and eats their food. Afterwards the man
takes a nap on the couch and when he eventually tries to leave, he finds an officer with a stun gun

Theft is common and many dumb criminals are arrested for the crime. An example of a person who is
arrested for theft is a twelve year old boy who stole a phone. When questioned, the boy denied stealing
the phone. Before the police left, they heard the stolen phone ring in the boy s closet and he was
arrested. The twelve year old boy committed a crime when he stole the phone. His arrest shows that he
was dumb for having the volume on when the police were at the house. His arrest also proves dumb
criminals can be arrested for crimes like theft. Like the twelve year old boy, a thirteen year old boy
was arrested for theft as well. The boy s mother called the police him after he took a pack of pop tarts
without her permission. The boy was arrested but eventually let go. Technically, the boy s actions are
considered theft. His arrest showed dumb criminals are arrested for crimes like theft. Different than
theft, a crime that dumb criminals are often arrested for is assault. An example of a dumb criminal
arrested for assault is a woman arrest for stabbing her co worker. The woman and her co worker were
arguing over who got to heat up their food first during their break. This disagreement soon turned

William Wordsworth s The Preface
Throughout history, at least until the late 1700s, poetry had always been centered on specific
guidelines that one must follow when expressing their feelings. However, once the late 1700s came
around in Europe, there was a sudden shift in the idealized poetry construction. The main reason for
this revolution was the publication of William Wordsworth s The Preface, which was a part of the
Lyrical Ballads, in which he stated his exact intentions for the Romantic Period of literature. This
period exemplified the radical changes that were beginning to occur in Europe, as well as other places
around the world.
In general, writers of this period expressed themselves through the use of imagination and emotion
instead of scholarly thoughts. In other words, they sought to use their inner eye in order to see the
world around them more clearly and accurately. Also, they believed all good aspects of life came
directly from nature, including the inherent good of humans as well as divine intervention. The writers
believed that by isolating oneself in nature, he or she would be able to become more self aware and
dependent. Due to this belief, the authors considered an important part of this period of literature to be
favoring the individual self over society as a whole. Various parts of life could be included in this, but
mostly just politics and social reform. Many poets were a part of this radical change in literature:
Samuel Taylor Coleridge, William Wordsworth, Jane Austen, and

The Decline of The U.S. Education System Essay
Education in the United States has long been a concerned issue for teachers, parents, and
communities. It is a major political topic, in which government has shown continuous efforts to
compare and evaluate standards from state to state by creating and monitoring various programs for
overall academic improvement across the country.
Proper education has now become a moral necessity in order for individuals and societies to grow and
succeed. Some of the major issues in the U.S. educational system consist of lack of equality in
education, and decline in academic test scores. The U.S. spends more per student than any OECD
nation, and other countries also seemingly invest funds differently than us. In addition, most countries

Education Secretary Arne Duncan said This is an absolute wake up call for America, The results are
extraordinarily challenging to us and we have to deal with the brutal truth. We have to get much more
serious about investing in education. ( USA Today In ranking, U.S. students trail global leaders, 2010,
para. 4)
While the U.S. has shown minor improvement in the PISA science test scores from 2006 to 2009 there
is still a large margin for improvement needed in all areas. But questions still remain to be answered
as to why there is such a large gap in comparison between the U.S. education and other countries. In
his remarks regarding the release of the PISA results, Secretary Arne Duncan quotes the fact that the
OECD has concluded in their study that the primary issue is not directly related to diversity or
disadvantaged backgrounds of public school students but that Socio economic disadvantage leads
more directly to poor educational performance in the United States than is the case in many other
countries. (Secretary Arne Duncan s Remarks at OECD s Release of the Program for International
Student Assessment (PISA) 2009 Results, December 7, 2010)
In addition OECD concluded that, children from single parent families score much lower in reading
than their peers from two parent or other types of families, even after accounting for socio economic
background.

was successful in expressing he feelings. Considering the fact that he was half Caucasian and half

it and change the course of history. On June 23, 1926, Hughes published a stunning essay called The

The judges are appointed by the President to serve for the duration of their lives, or until they choose
to retire. When the lifetime tenure was adopted, the average life expectancy was much less than what
it is now, allowing for the rotation of judges to happen more often. With the new life expectancy of
around eighty years old, a lifetime tenure can have judges serving anywhere from ten to forty years as
a Supreme Court Justice. To ensure that the alternation happens often enough, there should be a limit
to one fifteen year term per judge. These fifteen years of judgeship would be the lifetime limit for a
term in the Supreme Court (page 115). This term would encourage the President to avoid any bias
against the age of a judge. With the term limit, having a younger judge would not have much more of

The Importance Of William Shakespeare
William Shakespeare had competition for being the greatest playwright to ever live. The Importance
of William Shakespeare authored by Thomas Thrasher, nonfiction book, about Shakespeare s early life
and what happened during those times in London, England. First, John Shakespeare, William s father,
begins as an apprentice glove maker before marrying Mary Arden, receiving a coat of arms, and
opening his own shop. Furthermore, William Shakespeare s early life includes becoming an aletaster,
constable, affeeror, burgess, alderman, and finally a bailiff. Moreover, William is married to Anne

and a playwright. Next, William is attacked in secret by Robert Greene and this remark sparks a fire in
Henry Chettle. Finally, William s theater company loses moral during the plague.
Foremost, John Shakespeare started out as a humble farmer only to rise up the ranks and become a
nobleman. He moved to Stratford upon Avon where money is made and starts out as an apprentice
glove maker. During his stay, he finishes his apprenticeship and starts his own shop making enough
money to support himself. For example, when John Shakespeare creates his own shop he makes
enough money to support himself and the text states, He began to make gloves and leather goods for

A World Without Work By Derek Thompson
Every day, human beings work. To work is to be engaged in physical or mental activity in order to
achieve a purpose or result. (New Oxford American Dictionary) Thus, some people work by holding
full time jobs where they perform a task in order to get payed, while others exert their energy crafting
or caring for others, and yet others devote themselves to learning. Because work is such an integral
part of the American culture, it is hard to imagine life without it. However, this is exactly what Derek
Thompson does in the article, A World Without Work. In this piece, Thompson explores what might
happen if human work is replaced by technology. This essay challenges modern society s view that the
sole purpose of work is to earn money and boost self esteem, instead asserting that it also plays an
important role in holding together a community. Therefore, Thompson argues, the removal of it would
have many negative impacts on American society. While A World Without Work does make some
strong points about the harms of the end of work, the author fails to fully persuade the audience
because he does not clearly define his key terms or provide concrete evidence to support either his
main point or his proposed solution to the problem. In A World Without Work, Derek Thompson
argues that in the near future, technology will remove the need for the American workforce, thus
causing a major problem in our social dynamic and necessitating government intervention. At the

What Is The Difference Between Arx And Engel s Theory Of...
arx and Engels believed that the system at work of labor in society created a general alienation of
people from consciousness of their species being ; consciousness of being human. Within this theory
of human alienation, Marx and Engels provide three components from which people are generally
estranged from: the objects of labor, from nature, and from the labor itself. Plato, in contrast, believed
that human alienation lived on the basis of specialization, efficiency, and lack of education. That
people, in Socrates Kallipolis, were generally alienated from the Form of the Truth and Ideas. He
derails from Marx and Engels in the sense that Plato never believed in an inevitable Communist
Revolution, but in a possible political revolution, needed in order to maintain moderation and avoid
the clash of ideas in society. Where Marx and Engels believe in communism for the good of economy,
Socrates believed in communism for the good of the government and his Republic.
Marx and Engels believed that the economy during the Industrial Revolution created a mechanical
system in which people came to be alienated from the reality of being a human being. They argue that
because society is putting in all of its effort to compete with each other so that production becomes a
competition, people lose their sense of living, the sense of themselve, their species being. In the
Communist Manifesto, they argue, The bourgeoisie cannot exist without constantly revolutionising the
instruments of

The Face Of Battle By John Keegan
John Keegan describes his book, The Face of Battle, as a personal attempt to catch a glimpse of the
face of battle. This personal aspect that Keegan mentions is essential to his book and is excellently
articulated, driving home his point. Keegan, who taught at Royal Military Academy Sandhurst for
over 25 years, begins by acknowledging his uneasiness with the fact that even though he taught British
cadets military history, I have not been in a battle; not near one, nor heard one from afar, nor seen the
aftermath . . . And I grow increasingly convinced that I have very little idea of what a battle can be
like. Keegan is clear to state his proposition that almost all military history has functioned simply as a
battle piece description in which one can see all the larger moving aspects followed by the outcome.
However, this sort of recounting fails to acknowledge the personal side of war, the experience of
battle. What really ensues when a cavalry unit meets an infantry unit? What are the vital features in
determining whether soldiers stand and fight or turn and run?
Having proposed that military history has been failing in its duty, Keegan then continues to
demonstrate how it should be done. The battles of Agincourt, Waterloo, and the Somme are the main
interests of the book; these battles took place centuries apart and all involved British armies. He
examines, in detail, which aspects of war changed or remain constant between the three battles.
Keegan brilliantly and

Personal Injury Lawyer
The first thing you must do as soon as possible after being involved in a car accident or other grievous
accident is to call your personal accident lawyer. It s bad enough that you have sustained injuries, but
not contacting your lawyer as soon as you are able to could be a huge mistake. Below are several
critical mistakes that could severely hurt your personal injury claim.
1. Not Calling Your Personal Injury Lawyer
As mentioned, failing to place a call to your lawyer as soon as possible after the accident is a huge
mistake. If you are able to, call your lawyer immediately after the accident or as soon as possible
thereafter. If you are indisposed in such a way that you are not able to place the call yourself, ask a
friend or a family member to do so on your behalf. By all means, get your lawyer on the case as soon
as possible.

Not Getting the Contact Information of the Driver at Fault
While you might not be able to get the contact information of the driver at fault, at least try to get their
plate number. It would be almost impossible to prove a compensation case if you don t have the driver
s contact information or the other car s plate number.
4. Accepting Responsibility for the Accident
Never accept responsibility for an accident. In fact, don t talk or argue with anyone as to who was at
fault. Let that be the headache of your claims lawyer. Accepting responsibility can seriously hurt your
personal accident claims case.
5. Waiting Too Long to See a Doctor
Besides the fact that you need to have your injuries treated, seeing a doctor immediately starts off a
series of documents about your injuries and how they were sustained. Demonstrating that the injuries
you are seeking compensation for were a result of an accident can be difficult to prove if you wait too
long to see a doctor. A clever insurance lawyer may argue that the injuries may have been caused by
other reasons other than the accident.

An autopsy revealed that the cause of death was an overdose of Amytal Barbiturate. The coroner

During an election rally on 25 August 1988, the appellant challenged the PAPs claim to be an open

Stereotypes In Gran Torino
Films represent groups to differ from one another due to their physical characteristics. This is
especially true in Clint Eastwood s f2008 film Gran Torino. The film follows the changing attitudes of
Walt Kowalski, as he learns that cultural difference between himself and his Hmong neighbours are
only surface deep. Walt s friendship with his neighbours evolves into a need to save them from the
Hmong gangs who harass them, and in doing so, find his own salvation. The characterisation of Walt
challenges the stereotypical representation of both the elderly, and war heroes. The representation of
the Hmong also challenges dominant attitudes towards this group of people, revealing them to be very
similar in values to Walt himself. The way that

how to make good choices. The authors in chapter eleven advise teachers to be prepared to correct the
economics confusion that children bring into the classroom at a young age. According to Maxim, Even

their traditions alive in the US, despite an overwhelming and coercive Roman Catholic influence. Late

their owners disapproved of. Despite their desire to keep their African traditions alive, they were
powerless to stop the forceful nature of the Roman Catholic traditions. After many years, a new ritual

A Formal Description For A Youth Gang
Adolescence is a time of life spanning from the ages of 13 till about 25 when the brain has fully
developed. It is a period of life characterized by many up and downs where the individual experiences
multiple personal changes (Gladding, 2012, p. 255). In this time of turbulence young individuals may
enter into groups that society often refers to as gangs. It is accurate to say that gangs contribute
immensely to crime and delinquency however, to say that this is the purpose of all gangs would be
misleading. Gangs should instead be seen as existing on a continuum, some ranging from groups of
peers who spend time together and may get into trouble, to others who participate in more serious
crimes (Gorden, 2000, p. 4). In terms of a specific definition for a gang, there really is not one that has
been fully accepted by all. That being said looking at research a formal description for a youth gang
perhaps would be that it is a self formed group of individuals, consisting of three or more members,
generally ages 13 to 25, who share a sense of identity, and may or may not take part in delinquent
behaviour or crime (Preston Carr Stewart, 2012. P. 1 2). Often time s news stories claim that youth
gangs are on the rise and must be stopped and the members disbanded. However, to pursue this would
be saying that the formation of all gangs are negative and solely for the purpose of delinquent
behaviour and crime, which is not always the case. For society to take an active approach on

Essay On Nacirema Culture
Cosmetics are a large part of the Nacirema culture, particularly for women. Cosmetics are geared
toward women so they can improve upon or even completely change their natural looks. Their goal is
often to make themselves fit the standard of beauty often shown in magazines, television or other
media.
Women are often expected to wear cosmetics as a way to enhance their appearance. This is because
appearance plays a large role in Nacirema culture. If you do not look a certain way, especially as a
female, you may be ostracized and condemned by others. Women are expected to make themselves
look attractive and presentable at all times, this is a double standard as the expectations are not the
same for men. While in a professional setting, both men and women are expected to dress formally,
but there is no push for men to enhance the features they were born with. Commercials for cosmetics
are aimed toward women, often regaling them with stories of how if they buy said product they will be
more successful in life, feel better about themselves or finally get the guy they ve been after.
This can tell us a lot about Nacirema beliefs. The biggest one being that women are, above ... Show

How Does Reflexology Work
Reflexology is a form of alternative medicine that focuses on the soles of the feet and sometimes the
palms of the hands. The zone therapy theory behind reflexology was first introduced in 1915 by an
ear, nose and throat doctor named William Fitzgerald. It was later developed into modern reflexology
by American physiotherapist Eunice Ingram. Practitioners believe that certain regions on the hands
and feet correspond to other parts of the body, including internal organs and glands, and applying
pressure to these points can encourage health in the corresponding areas through natural energy
pathways. Although reflexology is not proven to directly affect the course of disease, many who
receive it report relief of physical symptoms.
How Does Reflexology Work?
One way reflexology may work is by relaxing the body and relieving stress, which encourages natural
healing and regeneration. Another theory is that it works with the central nervous system, taking
advantage of the connections between peripheral nerves, skin and internal organs. The application of
pressure to specific points sends a message to peripheral nerves to adjust the corresponding areas

to which they dispatched officers Hymon and Wright. Upon arrival at the scene, a woman directed
them to a neighboring house from her porch and informed the officers that she had heard glass

Hymon proceeded to circle around behind the house, while Wright radioed dispatch to inform them

Comparing El Paso, Texas And London Essay
Imagine yourself moving to a different city. You have looked at all the cities you would most likely
move to and you have finally picked out that El Paso, Texas and London, England are your two final
choices. After narrowing down the options to two cities its important to look at similarities and
differences. Although El Paso, Texas and London, England are similar in their cheap housing and
exuberant job opportunities, they differ in their getaways, job opportunities, and housing. El Paso and
London are very similar in that the cities don t only offer housing at a very affordable rate, but also
have created ways to employ its citizens. The similarities between the cities affordable homes is that
both are using cheaper areas to reconstruct or build new homes. This causes cheaper rent and
mortgages. A similar way the cities are creating jobs is through teaching skills. El Paso offers the Jobs
Corps which provides a counselor to walk students through steps in getting a job. London also offers a
mentor to help guide employees through the daily routines and requirements to get the job. The two
similarities of the cities are just a few, but there are differences as well. El Paso has many enjoyable

Huntingtons Disease Essay
Huntington s Disease
Huntington s disease, also known as Huntington s chorea is a genetic disorder that usually shows up in
someone in their thirties and forties, destroys the mind and body and leads to insanity and death within
ten to twenty years. The disease works by degenerating the ganglia (a pair of nerve clusters deep in the
brain that controls movement, thought, perception, and memory) and cortex by using energy
incorrectly. The brain will starve the neurons (brain cells), and sometimes make them work harder
than usual, causing extreme mental stress. The result is jerky, random, uncontrollable, rapid movement
such as grimacing of the face, flailing of arms and legs, and other such movement. This is known as

Some 30,000 Americans are currently suffering for this genetic disorder. Named in 1872 for George
Huntington the New York Doctor who first wrote down it s devestating symtoms, Huntingtons disease
up to now was a silent time bomb.
13,000 people, the largest known concentration of sufferers from Huntington s
Disease, live in the Lake Maracaibo region of Venezuela. The origins of this gene pool has been traced
back to the 1800 s to a woman named Maria Concepcion.
It was from blood samples of these people that scientists became extraordinarily lucky and isolated the
genetic marker that shows the presence of this disorder.
Today, it is believed that Maria obtained the disease when she was birthed by a european sailor.
Since it was first recorded by George Huntington, a Long Island doctor,
Huntington s disease had remained fairly low key. No one heard about it until it infected Woodie
Guthrie, A famous folk singer from the 1920 s who showed symptoms of the disease. In 1967, he died.
This put Huntington s Disease on the map, but it still was not well known. But, before Woodie guthrie
died, he had a son, Arlo Guthrie. He, too became a famous folk singer, this time from the
Seventies. He became extremely famous, but had to live with the fact that he has a 50% chance of
having the disorder. That aroused huge public interest and made the disease well known.

The Rise Of Christianity With Charlemagne
The Rise of Christianity with Charlemagne
Through a series of events, Charles Magnus the Great became well known by the French version of
his name, Charlemagne. Charlemagne was famous for his aggressive spirit, accessibility, and an
efficient manager. Most of all, there was no denial that during his reign, Charlemagne was Champion
of Christianity (McClintock, 220 222). The leadership of Charlemagne began in a controversial period
during the rise of Christianity. Before Charlemagne s time, the Roman Empire fell, causing the
division of Western Europe into kingdoms, including the Franks. The Franks were a group of
Germanic peoples, unruly barbarians, from lowlands east and north of the Roman Empire that
outlasted predictions of a short kingdom (McKay, 227). After the division, the people faced conflicts
and confusion and searched for unity and order. Christianity spread rapidly and met the needs of the
people who had once been part of Rome and her empire (Spielvogel, 361). Christianity, even with all
of the hardships, spread throughout Britain between A.D. 325 and A.D. 600. Over time, people from
every class were tired of war and feared the empire s end. Thus, they were drawn to admire Christians
and their faith (Spielvogel, 354). Charles the Great, son of King Pepin of the Franks, began his throne
after the death of his father (r. 768 814). During his rule, Charlemagne not only achieved many

  • 2. Intrinsic And Intrinsic Motivation Intrinsic Factors One of commonly studied types of motivation is intrinsic and extrinsic, and the difference between them has played significant part on both developmental and educational practices. Intrinsic motivation remains an important concept, reflecting the natural human susceptibility to learn and adapt (Ryan Deci, 2000). Intrinsic motivation is defined as the behavior of an individual that is being stimulated by internal rewards. The motivation to involve in a behavior arises from within the individual because it is rewarding intrinsically, (Cherry, 2015). According to Ryan Deci (2000), they distinguish between different types of motivation based on the different reasons or goals that drives an individual to move. The simplest distinction is between intrinsic motivation, which refers to doing something because it is inherently interesting or enjoyable, and extrinsic motivation, which refers to doing something because it leads to a separable outcome. • 3. Stoicism in Ancient Rome Essay Stoicism made the transition from an intriguing foreign philosophy to a popular practice because it was taken up by several high profile figures. Scipio Africanus, the original esteemed Roman Stoic died in 129 BCE, but about 40 years later a new crop of celebrated Romans took up the Stoic practice. During the fall of the Roman Republic a group of famed orators, generals, and statesmen including Marcus Junius Brutus (85 42 BCE), Marcus Tullius Cicero (106 43 BCE), Pompey the Great (106 48 BCE), and Cato the Younger (95 46 BCE) all professed themselves Stoics. He was also a great intellectual and orator of his time which would have put him in contact with the people who already knew of Stoicism. He studied under the Stoic philosopher Diodotus (d. 59 BCE). They maintained such a close friendship that Diodotus lived in Cicero s house until his death when he left everything he owned to Cicero. While Cicero considered himself not a complete disciple of Stoicism (he followed some teaching of Epicurus and Plato) he practiced Stoicism s ideals, especially it s ethics, throughout his life. Professor and historian Edward Clayton writes that Cicero puts forth Stoic doctrines not dogmatically, as absolutely and always true, but as the best set of beliefs so far developed. We ought to adhere to them because our lives, both individually and collectively, will be better if we do. It is essentially Stoic ethical teachings that Cicero urges the Roman elite to adopt. Cicero urges the elite to adopt these ethics through his orations and his philosophical writings. He, himself, studied the texts of the earlier stoic philosopher Panaetius, and this influenced his most famous work: De Officiis, or On Duty. On De Divinationes, another of Cicero s Stoicism influenced works, the historian A E Douglas writes that: Cicero wrote at its beginning and again at its end... that he was deliberately seeking relief through philosophy from the political troubles of the time and an outlet ... Fourteen days after the person has died, the soul is said to depart for the other world, and a service and dinner party are again held. At every one of these parties, a glass of vodka covered by a piece of black bread is left for the deceased. This would be the opposite of the traditional Russian custom of breaking black bread when meeting someone for the first time. Traditionally the person s body would lay untouched and uncovered for the three days until the burial; however, cremations are becoming more popular because of how inexpensive they are. People would wear weeds, or drab clothing in black, to prevent the dead from returning. Covering the head in a black kerchief and wearing black continues for 40 days after the death. People also cover mirrors, stop watches, and take the TV from the room where the body lies in wait. When the body is carried to be buried its carried with its legs extended forward and done so that no part of the body touches the house on its way out, because of the fear that the dead will return to their home and take someone with them. The Psychological Assessment Practitioners As stated by Foxcroft (2011) the psychological assessment practitioners core ethical responsibility is that nothing should be done during testing and assessment to harm the client, and that it is their responsibility to follow ethical practices so that the test takers can perceive the assessment to be fair and beneficial. This discussion will be covering ethical issues in psychological assessment with an emphasis on the South African context. We will look at what a psychological test is, what ethics is, the history of South Africa that has had an impact on psychological testing in this country, and some ethical issues to consider. In the South African context, a psychological test is classified as such when the purpose of said test, results in the performance of a psychological act, according to Foxcroft, Roodt, Abrahams (as cited in Foxcroft. 2011). Foxcroft (2011) stated that a psychological act with regards to assessment is the use of measures to assess mental, cognitive, or behavioural processes and functioning, intellectual functioning, aptitude, personality etc. Only registered psychologists are allowed to perform psychological acts, and the tests devised may only be used, interpreted and managed by psychologists according to Foxcroft (2011). Male Utopian And Dystopias As Bammer explains, while male utopian writers are mainly interested in broadening their influence and power and exploring other worlds, women s utopias aim to change their current situation by reconstructing the power relations that affect their lives. She states that these fantasies are much more achievable in theory and much more urgent than men s. However, women had no reason to turn to such a male dominated genre while they had genres more suitable for delving into the private sphere and its more realistic utopian possibilities (Bammer, 2004). Bammer points out that although men s utopian fantasies take different approaches compared to women s, women are far from absent in men s utopia. Dystopian fiction is engaged with the argument between the desire of the individual and the societal demand, emphasizing the sexuality and relations among the genders as parts of this conflict (Brooker 1994, 337). Brooker states that the governments of dystopian societies in books such as We, Brave New World or Nineteen Eighty Four all use sexuality as the primary tool to control society. Brooker also points out that despite this consistent focus on sexuality in dystopian fiction, the major works of the genre have done relatively little to challenge conventional notions of gender roles . Although there is considerable emphasis on sexuality in dystopian fiction, Brooker argues that conventional notions of gender roles remain unchallenged in major works of the genre. He observes that even though these literary dystopias and utopias stress the importance of gender equality, they remain places where men are men and women are women, and in relatively conventional ways . Brooker brings up More s Utopia as an example of this trend. In Utopia, women and men are proclaimed completely equal, even though it is a patriarchal society where men are still the head of the household and women belong to their fathers or husbands. • 11. William Wordsworth s The Preface Throughout history, at least until the late 1700s, poetry had always been centered on specific guidelines that one must follow when expressing their feelings. However, once the late 1700s came around in Europe, there was a sudden shift in the idealized poetry construction. The main reason for this revolution was the publication of William Wordsworth s The Preface, which was a part of the Lyrical Ballads, in which he stated his exact intentions for the Romantic Period of literature. This period exemplified the radical changes that were beginning to occur in Europe, as well as other places around the world. In general, writers of this period expressed themselves through the use of imagination and emotion instead of scholarly thoughts. In other words, they sought to use their inner eye in order to see the world around them more clearly and accurately. Also, they believed all good aspects of life came directly from nature, including the inherent good of humans as well as divine intervention. The writers believed that by isolating oneself in nature, he or she would be able to become more self aware and dependent. Due to this belief, the authors considered an important part of this period of literature to be favoring the individual self over society as a whole. Various parts of life could be included in this, but mostly just politics and social reform. (New Oxford American Dictionary) Thus, some people work by holding full time jobs where they perform a task in order to get payed, while others exert their energy crafting or caring for others, and yet others devote themselves to learning. Because work is such an integral part of the American culture, it is hard to imagine life without it. However, this is exactly what Derek Thompson does in the article, A World Without Work. In this piece, Thompson explores what might happen if human work is replaced by technology. This essay challenges modern society s view that the sole purpose of work is to earn money and boost self esteem, instead asserting that it also plays an important role in holding together a community. Therefore, Thompson argues, the removal of it would have many negative impacts on American society. While A World Without Work does make some strong points about the harms of the end of work, the author fails to fully persuade the audience because he does not clearly define his key terms or provide concrete evidence to support either his main point or his proposed solution to the problem. Within this theory of human alienation, Marx and Engels provide three components from which people are generally estranged from: the objects of labor, from nature, and from the labor itself. Plato, in contrast, believed that human alienation lived on the basis of specialization, efficiency, and lack of education. That people, in Socrates Kallipolis, were generally alienated from the Form of the Truth and Ideas. He derails from Marx and Engels in the sense that Plato never believed in an inevitable Communist Revolution, but in a possible political revolution, needed in order to maintain moderation and avoid the clash of ideas in society. Where Marx and Engels believe in communism for the good of economy, Socrates believed in communism for the good of the government and his Republic. Marx and Engels believed that the economy during the Industrial Revolution created a mechanical system in which people came to be alienated from the reality of being a human being. • 23. The Face Of Battle By John Keegan John Keegan describes his book, The Face of Battle, as a personal attempt to catch a glimpse of the face of battle. This personal aspect that Keegan mentions is essential to his book and is excellently articulated, driving home his point. Keegan, who taught at Royal Military Academy Sandhurst for over 25 years, begins by acknowledging his uneasiness with the fact that even though he taught British cadets military history, I have not been in a battle; not near one, nor heard one from afar, nor seen the aftermath . . . And I grow increasingly convinced that I have very little idea of what a battle can be like. Keegan is clear to state his proposition that almost all military history has functioned simply as a battle piece description in which one can see all the larger moving aspects followed by the outcome. However, this sort of recounting fails to acknowledge the personal side of war, the experience of battle. What really ensues when a cavalry unit meets an infantry unit? What are the vital features in determining whether soldiers stand and fight or turn and run? Having proposed that military history has been failing in its duty, Keegan then continues to demonstrate how it should be done. The battles of Agincourt, Waterloo, and the Somme are the main interests of the book; these battles took place centuries apart and all involved British armies. He examines, in detail, which aspects of war changed or remain constant between the three battles. Keegan brilliantly and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

West African slaves in the south kept their traditions alive in the US, despite an overwhelming and coercive Roman Catholic influence. Late in the evening, and behind closed doors, slaves returned to their roots to practice the traditions that their owners disapproved of. Despite their desire to keep their African traditions alive, they were powerless to stop the forceful nature of the Roman Catholic traditions. • 31. A Formal Description For A Youth Gang Adolescence is a time of life spanning from the ages of 13 till about 25 when the brain has fully developed. It is a period of life characterized by many up and downs where the individual experiences multiple personal changes (Gladding, 2012, p. 255). In this time of turbulence young individuals may enter into groups that society often refers to as gangs. It is accurate to say that gangs contribute immensely to crime and delinquency however, to say that this is the purpose of all gangs would be misleading. Gangs should instead be seen as existing on a continuum, some ranging from groups of peers who spend time together and may get into trouble, to others who participate in more serious crimes (Gorden, 2000, p. 4). In terms of a specific definition for a gang, there really is not one that has been fully accepted by all. That being said looking at research a formal description for a youth gang perhaps would be that it is a self formed group of individuals, consisting of three or more members, generally ages 13 to 25, who share a sense of identity, and may or may not take part in delinquent behaviour or crime (Preston Carr Stewart, 2012. P. 1 2). Often time s news stories claim that youth gangs are on the rise and must be stopped and the members disbanded. However, to pursue this would be saying that the formation of all gangs are negative and solely for the purpose of delinquent behaviour and crime, which is not always the case. Cosmetics are geared toward women so they can improve upon or even completely change their natural looks. Their goal is often to make themselves fit the standard of beauty often shown in magazines, television or other media. Women are often expected to wear cosmetics as a way to enhance their appearance. This is because appearance plays a large role in Nacirema culture. If you do not look a certain way, especially as a female, you may be ostracized and condemned by others. Women are expected to make themselves look attractive and presentable at all times, this is a double standard as the expectations are not the same for men. While in a professional setting, both men and women are expected to dress formally, but there is no push for men to enhance the features they were born with. Commercials for cosmetics are aimed toward women, often regaling them with stories of how if they buy said product they will be more successful in life, feel better about themselves or finally get the guy they ve been after. • 35. How Does Reflexology Work Reflexology is a form of alternative medicine that focuses on the soles of the feet and sometimes the palms of the hands. The zone therapy theory behind reflexology was first introduced in 1915 by an ear, nose and throat doctor named William Fitzgerald. It was later developed into modern reflexology by American physiotherapist Eunice Ingram. Practitioners believe that certain regions on the hands and feet correspond to other parts of the body, including internal organs and glands, and applying pressure to these points can encourage health in the corresponding areas through natural energy pathways. Although reflexology is not proven to directly affect the course of disease, many who receive it report relief of physical symptoms. How Does Reflexology Work? One way reflexology may work is by relaxing the body and relieving stress, which encourages natural healing and regeneration. Another theory is that it works with the central nervous system, taking advantage of the connections between peripheral nerves, skin and internal organs. The origins of this gene pool has been traced back to the 1800 s to a woman named Maria Concepcion. It was from blood samples of these people that scientists became extraordinarily lucky and isolated the genetic marker that shows the presence of this disorder. The Rise Of Christianity With Charlemagne The Rise of Christianity with Charlemagne Through a series of events, Charles Magnus the Great became well known by the French version of his name, Charlemagne. Charlemagne was famous for his aggressive spirit, accessibility, and an efficient manager. Most of all, there was no denial that during his reign, Charlemagne was Champion of Christianity (McClintock, 220 222). The leadership of Charlemagne began in a controversial period during the rise of Christianity. Before Charlemagne s time, the Roman Empire fell, causing the division of Western Europe into kingdoms, including the Franks. The Franks were a group of Germanic peoples, unruly barbarians, from lowlands east and north of the Roman Empire that outlasted predictions of a short kingdom (McKay, 227). After the division, the people faced conflicts and confusion and searched for unity and order. Christianity spread rapidly and met the needs of the people who had once been part of Rome and her empire (Spielvogel, 361). Christianity, even with all of the hardships, spread throughout Britain between A.D. 325 and A.D. 600. Over time, people from every class were tired of war and feared the empire s end. Thus, they were drawn to admire Christians and their faith (Spielvogel, 354). Charles the Great, son of King Pepin of the Franks, began his throne after the death of his father (r. 768 814).
