This document discusses using social media in science. It begins with an introduction on the goals for the workshop which are to discuss some theory on social media, examples of its use, and next steps. It then asks whether attendees currently use social media privately or for work/research and what their goals are. The document presents some theory on how social media is changing communication from one-to-one to many-to-many. Examples discussed include blogging for exposure, microblogging on Twitter to share information, open science networks to speed research, and crowd-funding initiatives.
