1) Social media can significantly increase the visibility, downloads, and citations of research publications and other work. Sharing publications and research on social media platforms like Twitter can lead to more than 10 times the downloads compared to works not shared online.
2) The number of citations a researcher receives is impacted by their social media presence. One researcher found growth in their own citations correlated with increased social media use. Metrics like the h-index are also influenced by social visibility and are being used more in evaluating researchers.
3) Researchers are encouraged to create profiles on social media platforms for academics to raise their visibility and credibility. Sharing work and building an online community can multiply the impacts on downloads, citations, and career advancement

At the same time, traditional scholarly metrics and indexing are converging with social media, resulting in new approaches for measuring scholar-practitioner influence. The emerging scene challenges libraries to support scholars, practitioners and students to engage with an evolving environment in which much may be gained or forfeited depending on how reputation is curated. For librarians to assist scholars in this new altmetrics environment, more needs to be known about how students and faculty are or are not engaging with emerging tools available to them. This presentation gives an overview of the considerations, perceptions, and issues related to the use of altmetrics by graduate students and scholar-practitioners at VIU and Royal Roads University.

Traditional bibliometric methods of evaluating academic research, such as journal impact factors and article citations, have been supplemented in the past 5-10 years by the development of altmetrics (alternative metrics or article level metrics). Altmetrics measures impact of research, data and publications, such as references in data and knowledge bases, article views, downloads and mentions in social media and news media. This presentation gives a brief background to altmetrics and demonstrates how Rhodes University librarians are using social media to raise the visibility of the research output of their institution. About one-fifth of current scientific papers are being shared on Twitter. With nearly 69 million active U.S. Twitter users (24% of the U.S. adult population) and 328 million monthly active users worldwide, Twitter is one of the biggest social networks worldwide. Understandably, hopes are high that tweets mentioning scientific articles and research findings can reach peers and the general public. Studies show that most of the engagement with scientific papers on Twitter takes place among members of academia and thus reflects visibility within the scientific community rather than impact on society. However, there are ways to reach the broader public. This webinar will provide an overview of using Twitter to reach peers and non-specialist groups, the relationship between tweets and citations, and provide tips for building an academic Twitter presence.

The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. • Hirsch found that the h-index is slightly more accurate than the
number of citations, and substantially better than the number of
publications (productivity) and mean number of citations.
• The h-index does seem to be able to identify good scientists, and it
is becoming widely used informally, for example to rank applicants
for research posts

index as one of the criteria both for appointments and for grants
allocation”, says Hirsch. “I have seen several job applicants send us

• A paper in a median impact factor journal uploaded to Academia.edu receives 16%
more citations after one year than a similar article not available online, 51%
more citations after three years, and 69% after five years.
• Articles posted to Academia.edu had 58% more citations than articles only posted
to other online venues, such as personal and departmental home pages, after five
years.
