Discussion and conclusions
We discovered that social media data on consumer emotions
was collected most commonly using APIs and web crawling. The
datasets used in detecting emotions ranged from small data
(e.g., 50 customer postings) to what can be considered as big
data in terms of volume (e.g., 17 million tweets).
A major deficiency in the research is that less than half of the
studies report the accuracy of the computational method used.
Furthermore, in those studies that report the accuracy, it ranged
between 73% and 95%. The findings affirm the view of Boyd and
Crawford (2012) that objectivity and the accuracy of the data is
the challenge of big data research.
Our results indicate that, in addition to data gathering
approaches, researchers should also focus on the processing of
the data, as well as on its documentation in detail to ensure the
replicability of results, as suggested e.g. by Bruns (2013)

Computational methods used (main categories) Sentiment analysis tools: SentiStrenght 2, SentiWordNet Machine learning approaches: Support Vector Machine (SVM), Support Vector Regression (SVR), Naïve Bayes (NB), Multinomial naïve bayes (MNB), Supervised machine learning algorithm DAN2 Lexicon based approaches: Wiebe’s polarity lexicon, Hu and Liu lexicon, MPQA subjectivity lexicon, opinion lexicon, Harvard- IV dictionary, Strapparava emotions lexicon, Lexitron dictionary, domain specific Loughran and McDonald (LM). Data mining approaches: regression analysis, clustering, chi-square, Ontology based approaches: Ontology based semantically enabled system (SEM), Ontology support (ONT); Custom built system without ontology learning techniques (CUS).
  • 12. Discussion and conclusions We discovered that social media data on consumer emotions was collected most commonly using APIs and web crawling. The datasets used in detecting emotions ranged from small data (e.g., 50 customer postings) to what can be considered as big data in terms of volume (e.g., 17 million tweets). A major deficiency in the research is that less than half of the studies report the accuracy of the computational method used. Furthermore, in those studies that report the accuracy, it ranged between 73% and 95%. The findings affirm the view of Boyd and Crawford (2012) that objectivity and the accuracy of the data is the challenge of big data research. Our results indicate that, in addition to data gathering approaches, researchers should also focus on the processing of the data, as well as on its documentation in detail to ensure the replicability of results, as suggested e.g. by Bruns (2013)
