Best practices for online learning--Tulsa Tech Center PD Day Feb 18, 2014cjbonk
Abstract: There are dozens of new technologies emerging each year and endless ways in which they can be used for teaching and learning. So many technologies and pedagogical uses, in fact, that most instructors of higher education are overwhelmed. One solution for this problem is to locate and share best practices. As part of this "best practices" movement, Curt Bonk offers two simple yet powerful frameworks that can be used to understand hundreds of Web-based pedagogical ideas that can motivate students to high success in online learning environments. Bonk will provide these best practices in online teaching based on two decades of his research. Such ideas can creatively engage students into deeper and better learning. He will reveal dozens of practical examples using his widely acclaimed R2D2 (Read, Reflect, Display, and Do) framework for instructional design with technology. Not done, he will showcase his TEC-VARIETY model for student motivation with Web technology. Each letter of the TEC-VARIETY model stands for a well known motivational principle (e.g., tone, encouragement, curiosity, variety, autonomy, relevance, interactivity, engagement, tension, and yielding products.). While detailing best practices he has seen around the globe, Bonk will also discuss how his two methods can be expanded or altered to fit one’s particular preferences and needs. No matter what galaxy or planet you are on, these ideas and techniques can be linked student motivation, collaboration, interaction, and general engagement in the learning process. Those attending this session will walk away with many practical strategies that can be incorporated directly into face-to-face, blended, and virtual classes, events, or programs.

Although anyone can set up a twitter account, create a Facebook fan page, or start a new YouTube channel in a matter of minutes, it takes significantly more effort to maintain and refresh the content on these sites. Even more effort must be invested to ensure the sites are consistent with your organization’s brand and key messages. How do you know if the time invested in social media is worth the effort? In this session, we will discuss the various ways to leverage social media to positively impact your business. We will start by describing the benefits of social media done right and the challenges of social media efforts gone astray. Next, we will both discuss and demonstrate the benefits of syndicating content, which reduces costs while maintaining brand consistency. We will also describe and show some of the key metrics you should track in order to understand the ROI of your social media efforts, as well as the various analytics tools required for this task. Finally, we will cover some tips on how to deal with potential issues as you embark on your social media strategy.

Community College Online Class Size Optimization: Current Research and FindingsJoshua Murdock
With the increasing demands for online classes as well as cost-cutting measures, many institutions look at raising online course caps. How might this impact learning?
In our community college, there is an increasing demand not only for online courses, but for online programs. At the same time that we are struggling with quality assurance of our online educational experiences, we battle with state funding limitations. Put these two factors together and the natural questions emerge: Could focusing efforts on offering larger online classes solve our problems? How might larger online classes impact learning? We will present preliminary findings based on existing research, interviews with staff at peer colleges, surveys of division deans, and both formal and informal discussions with online faculty and staff. Data will be drawn from multiple resources including the Instructional Technology Council, blogs about online course sizes, current literature, and social networking sites. Session Goals: After the session, each participant will be able to 1. Identify important factors that should be considered when choosing caps for online courses. 2. Locate and utilize resources to further the study of online class size optimization.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

JoshThe Millennial Generation has emerged as a force that will shape the social and economic dynamics of the next decade (Howe & Strauss, 2000).The definition of when millennials were born varies, with estimates ranging from 1977 (Tapscott, 1998) to 1982 (Howe & Strauss, 2000).Researchers agree that the uniqueness of millennials results from technological forces that have affected this generation.Unique millennial competency is the ability to effectively use broadly networked digital communication technologies to quickly and seamlessly accomplish a variety of tasks. This competency has resulted from their experiences with Internet communities (Gorman, Nelson, & Glassman, 2004).

Hotseat, a social networking-powered mobile Web application, creates a collaborative classroom, allowing students to provide near real-time feedback during class and enabling professors to adjust the course content and improve the learning experience. Students can post messages to Hotseat using their Facebook or Twitter accounts, sending text messages, or logging in to the Hotseat Web site. http://www.itap.purdue.edu/tlt/hotseat/ http://mashable.com/2009/11/03/hotseat/
http://www.edsocialmedia.com/2011/02/the-advantage-of-facebook-groups-in-education/ HW Forums:The real beauty of this forum however, is that this model for homework promotes collaboration. Instead of grading homework assignments that are all the same, I have the students build answers to questions by adding off each other and questioning each other. Not only does this prepare a perfect study guide come test time, but it promotes academic discussion outside of the classroom. Some students are stronger in discussion when that discussion unfolds behind a computer screen with more time to analyze and articulate their thoughts in writing.Links & VideosFurthermore, I can also post links, videos, articles, pictures and documents to use in my course. Some of the students were so taken by our discussion of the events in Egypt that they posted news articles, links, and one student even posted a link of a protestor getting shot! This sharing of educational links has changed the way my students look at the facebook.
