The Dutch first introduced Africans as slaves to America in 1619, establishing a system of slavery and abuse that would divide the nation. Africans captured in their homelands suffered terrible conditions as they were transported by ship to Cartagena, the main slave port, where they were sold at auction. Once purchased, slaves were branded with identifying marks and forced to perform difficult labor on plantations and in mines under harsh conditions, facing severe punishments such as amputation if they did not meet expectations.
