Colonialism involves one group colonizing another people or land by going to a distant place to live and potentially conquer the local population. Countries and peoples often colonized others for negative reasons like capturing slaves, stealing land and resources, and becoming wealthy. Examples include Spain colonizing much of the Americas, taking the land and native people for these exploitative purposes, and England colonizing what is now the United States, bringing Africans as slaves rather than native Americans. Colonialism contributed to globalization by spreading the colonizers' language and religion, and as the world globalizes more, traditional cultures risk being lost forever.
