Colonial powers like Spain and England colonized other peoples and lands for exploitative reasons such as capturing slaves, stealing natural resources, and becoming wealthy. The Spanish colonized much of Latin America to do this, and as a result the population became primarily mixed European and native ancestry. English colonization of North America similarly stole land and brought slaves from Africa rather than enslaving native peoples. Colonialism spread European languages and religions to conquered peoples and led to the global spread of Western culture that threatens traditional ways of life worldwide.
