Whether you work in a formal or informal
environment, a Project Charter is the first step in a
project. The Project Charter has different names.
Below are a few:
• Scope of Work
• Estimate / Quote
• Request for Proposal
• Business Case
• Organizational Process

3. SIX SIGMA
Since the Project Charter is developed in the
Define stage of DMADV & DMAIC, the document
will be simple document providing estimates from
an overview.

4. SIX SIGMA
The Project Name will start the Project Charter. It
is good to provide a Project Name that is direct to
the Project.

5. SIX SIGMA
The Project Description is the second step. You
want to describe the project.

6. SIX SIGMA
In the Project Scope you want to define the
deliverables of the Project. What changes will be
made to the current structure.

7. SIX SIGMA
The next step will be defining the Project
Managers, their functions and responsibilities.

8. SIX SIGMA
Now you need to define the Milestones. Since the
document is in the beginning of the project, these
Milestones need to be your target time line. During
the next steps the time frame may be adjusted. This is
acceptable. Keep everyone informed of the change in
the time line.

9. SIX SIGMA
The Project Budget:You need to define the costs of
the project. In addition, you need to define the
possible monetary and non-monetary benefits.

10. SIX SIGMA
The final step is the submission of the document to
the Project Sponsor (usually an officer or owner) for
signature and date. The agreement with the Project
Sponsor provides the necessary authorization to
proceed with the Project.

11. SIX SIGMA
It may be the Project Sponsor would like to see
adjustments in the Project. This is common.
With the notes of changes, you can rewrite the
Project Charter under the revised direction from
the Project Sponsor.

12. SIX SIGMA
Once the Project Charter has been approved, you
can move forward with the Measure stage of
DMADV or DMAIC.

13. You have completed the PROJECT CHARTER
section of DMADV & DMAIC.
