Mismatch Capabilities
As an office working individual, you
don’t want this person working on your
equipment.
Just as a tech or engineer will keep your equipment
primed and working; not working within the office.
OnThe JobTraining
On the JobTraining is a good plan to
develop skills of an apprentice.
Apprenticeship is used in many different skilled labor functions.
This is an excellent form to train interested workers on a variety
of skills.
Mentorship
The Mentorship program matches the new employee with an
experienced employee. The goal is to bring the new employee
up to speed with the job functions and acceptable performance
levels.
Mentorship
Assumptions:
Mentor pay rate is $20/hour. Performance level is 100%.
Protégé pay rate is $15/hour. Performance level is 70%.
For every 8 hours working together, the Protégé Performance Level increases 5
percentage points. In 5 days, the Protégé Performance Level is 95%, acceptable
level.
In the end, there is increase 10,000 units per week.
This volume increase provides a 26.3% decrease
per unit basis.
WIN – WIN SOLUTION
Training Investment
Classroom or online training will provide benefit in
the long term. The class cost and time away from
the office may be high, but the one time payment
has a benefit for the life of the employee.
Let’s look at the possible benefits:
Training Investment
As an example, the total cost of training is $1,200. This includes the
class, travel, hotel, meals, etc…
The employee benefit is 5%. This improvement could be within work being
performed more efficient; or additional work load; or delegated tasks being
provided. The employee earns $15/hour.
40 hours x $15/hour x 5% = $30
$1,200 / $30 = 40 weeks
In 40 weeks you have earned full payback in your
training investment.
DelegatingTasks
As a leader, you can train your staff for
different tasks. When needed, tasks
can then be delegated.
Your delegation can provide your staff with professional
confidence. You will also increase in accomplish tasks.
Overtime: Good or Bad?
Sometimes it is necessary for an employee or
a group of employees to work overtime to
accomplish a task. Since your have avoided
the set-up of a new employee and training
process, you are better off with overtime.
Overtime: Good or Bad?
However, when a person starts to receive overtime pay, it is
typically 1.5x of normal pay. Working 5 hours overtime, the
employee sees an increase of 18.75%. When the overtime
becomes a standard, the employee will adjust their lifestyle for
the income.
Without the overtime, the employee
now faces a new life challenge.
