Analysis of Financila Position of Tesco Plc.
Investment decisions companies make today will have a direct impact on their ability to reach
financial objectives. Most companies are faced with questions such as: which projects should your
company invest in, which returns are needed and what risks are the company willing to take to achieve
company goals? This paper will explain what is, and how to calculate a weighted average cost of
capital of Tesco Plc based on company s balance sheet1 and cash flow statement.2 The second part
will focus on a report on the Tesco s cash flow over the two year period starting in 2005. In the last
part essay will explain what discount rate Tesco Plc. should use when deciding on major investment
projects.
a) Calculate the company s weighted average ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
WACC is calculated by multiplying the cost of each capital component by its proportional weight and
then summing:
WACC = ke We + kd Wd
Where kd cost of debt ke cost of equity
Wd weight of debt Vd / (Vd + Ve )
We weight of equity Ve / (Vd + Ve )
Data for Tesco is:
Debt £4,509 million
Cost of debt 5.376%
Weight of debt 4,509 / (4,509 + 9 444) = 0.3231
Equity £9 444 million
Cost of equity 8.306%
Weight of equity 9 444 / (4,509 + 9 444) = 0.6768
WACC = 8.306% x 0.6768+5.376% x 0.3231
WACC = 7.4407%
Tesco s weighted average cost of capital is 7.44%, this means that if the company takes on an
investment with return lesser than that figure it will make a loss. Not being able to cover costs of
financing will force shareholders to look for value elsewhere, consequently forcing them to look for
returns in different company.
Write a brief report on the company s cash flow over the period covered by the accounts.
Cash flow statement is simple and informative way to evaluate company s financial position; both
inflows and outflows of cash are included in the statement. Usually it is taken over the period of one
year and it measure cash flow from: operation, investing and financing activities. All of the figures are
easily obtainable from the sheet.
Tesco s cash flow from net cash operating activities up 20.4% to over £2.6bn. Cash generated from
operating activities was increased by just over

Arranged Marriage And Other Types Of Marriage
An arranged marriage by definition is a marriage planned and agreed upon by the families or
guardians of the bride and groom. The amount of input a bride or groom has is based on the type of
arranged marriage (Psychology Wiki). Arranged marriage is a sensitive topic as it involves the values,
beliefs and core characteristics of many people. There are multiple views on arranged marriage, both
positive and negative. In the west, most individuals have negative opinions on arranged marriage.
Arranged marriage can be researched and analyzed from an anthropological, psychological and
sociological perspective. Through the three perspectives, many distinctive differences and similarities

The second type is traditional arranged marriage, where the parents choose their son s/daughter s

marriage, the bride/groom has significant input (Psychology Wiki). The last type is, a modern
arranged marriage with courtship, this type of marriage is the same as a modern arranged marriage,
but the bride/groom have time to connect and create a foundation for their marriage (Psychology

children, no matter the type of marriage these responsibilities do not change. Children of arranged
marriages usually follow the tradition. There are a lot of ways culture influences an arranged marriage.
In an arranged marriage the things that are observed in a spouse are, reputation, career (certain
professions are valued higher within select cultures), wealth, values, caste/religion, horoscope and
medical health (Traditional and Psychology Wiki). Within the cultures that practice arranged marriage

My Social Capital Activity
For my Social Capital activity, I chose to make a donation to the 2016 Christmas Fundraiser. I like to
give donations; especially during the holiday time because I was lucky enough to receive amazing
gifts and celebrate the holidays with my family every year, so I want to try to make that possible for
others who are not as fortunate to experience this too. It is also just as important to give as it is to
receive when it comes time for the holiday season because with all of the holiday shopping and chaos,
the giving back part is often forgotten. I decided to give donations because it is a quick way to make a
large impact on other people. I normally do not have a lot of free time, so for me, giving donations to

What Does The Wizard Of Oz Mean In The Gilded Age
For many generations, adults and children alike have relished L. Frank Baum s cleverly written
bedtime story, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. On the surface, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz seems like
an innocent fairy tale that was written solely to pleasure children today ; however a deeper look into
the main characters and symbolism inherent in the story, suggest an outlook into the Gilded Age.
Many historians, beginning with Henry Littlefield, have interpreted The Wizard of Oz as being an
allegory to the Populist Movement and the issue of money that surrounded the Gilded Age. Although
Baum mentions that The Wonderful Wizard of Oz was written as a bedtime fairy tale to be read and
enjoyed by people of all ages, the hidden symbols and deeper ... Show more content on

Therefore the Democrats pushed for a more conservative presidential candidate William Jennings
Bryan with the Populist support. On the other hand, the Republicans comprising mostly of bankers
and industrialists rallied for the gold standard because they wanted to keep the value of the dollar high
to retain their monopolistic power. The gold standard would also be beneficial to the creditors because
the amount of money they received from the debtors would be valued a lot more than that which they
initially lent out. Thus the stage was set for the battle of the standards in the elections 1896 between
the Populist and Democrat nominee William Jennings Bryan and the Republican candidate William
McKinley. Baum writes The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, with the battle between the Republicans and the
Populists as the main basis for its plot structure. L. Frank Baum s background is instrumental in
understanding the parallels between The Wizard of Oz and the Gilded Age in which Baum lived.
Baum lived in South Dakota during the period when Populism was gaining popularity. Western
farmers had naturally rallied for the Populist cause of better crop prices (inflation) because of droughts
which destroyed their crops. Baum was witness to the misery of the Western farmer and therefore
sympathetic towards them. There is however some confusion regarding Baum s political beliefs.
Henry M. Littlefield believed that Baum was a reform minded Democrat who supported Bryan and his

Essay on Dredging the Hudson River
Dredging the Hudson River
For the past year, the subject of polychlorinated biphenyls in the Hudson River and what should be
done about them has been discussed by politicians and residents all over the capital region. Often the
top story on the local news, the front page headline of the newspaper, the subject of a special on
television, or the reason for a town meeting, dredging has become a much debated topic. With all the
information being exchanged and opinions published, it is easy for the average person to become
confused. In an attempt to make things clear, the following report defines dredging, PCBs, and
presents a short discussion of each side of the Hudson River dredging debate.

Many companies produced PCBs in the 1930 s and 1940 s and because the chemical does not
decompose, PCBs are still present in soil and rivers, subsequently ending up in fish and other wildlife.
According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), PCBs build up in the environment, and
larger concentrations are found higher in the food chain. Eating contaminated fish is the most likely
way for PCBs to get into the human body. In 1997, the EPA banned the production of PCB s and they
were classified as a probable human carcinogen.
DREDGING
Dredging is the removal of soil or material from the bottom of a river, lake or ocean harbor. (Encarta
Online 8 Apr 2001). There are two distinctive types of dredging; navigation and construction
dredging, and environmental dredging. Navigation and construction dredging are used to remove
sediment that has accumulated to a level where the water depth is insufficient to support safe
navigation (Huskie 2). Navigation dredging tends to use large open clamshell dredges. Environmental
dredging utilizes hydraulic dredges that act as a vacuum to remove contaminated sediments such as
PCBs, ( Environmental Clearwater.org). A representation of these dredges is on the following page
courtesy of Keene Engineering ( Environmental Clearwater.org). A sediment that is toxic or
hazardous, once removed, must be placed in an approved hazardous waste landfill or, treated until it is

Disney Productions is one of the leading entertainment businesses, bringing tremendous profits not to

Ubbe was convinced and headed straight to Hollywood. With Walt creating stories, Ubbe producing
spectacular animation and Roy taking care of finances they had a perfect formula.
Walt often worked late at night. quot;Mice gathered in my wastebasket when I worked late at night. I

Walt s wife, Lillian, and she eventually got him to change it after days of pleading. In fact, it was
Lillian who ultimately named the mouse quot;Mickey. quot;
They first put Mickey in the short animation called, Plane
Crazy, named after Lindbergh s flight across the world.
Immediately after that short feature Walt got the idea to combine sound with the animation. This was

Essay on A Journey through the Schizophrenic World
A Journey through the Schizophrenic World
Imagine learning that your college roommate and his daughter was only a figment of your
imagination. That they never really existed. Or that it was your spouses college roommate that you
thought was his old time friend never really existed. John Nash from A Beautiful Mind was told that
his college roommate was not real, that he actually had his own room in college. That is how the
director, Ron Howard, constructed his own view of what it means to have schizophrenia. The word
schizophrenia conjures images of a nightmare world where strange and twisted realities exist
(Veague). Society views schizophrenia as imaginary, hallucinations, and paranoia. What society does

When diagnosing schizophrenia there are three different types of symptoms: positive, negative, and
cognitive. Positive Symptoms are symptoms that are would not be seen in a healthy person, such as

Hallucinations when only that person can either hear, see, or smell something that is not truly there.
The most common hallucinations are Voices ( Schizophrenia). These symptoms are what a person with
schizophrenia not only has to deal with but first come to the realization that they are symptoms and
that things there are experiencing are not necessarily true. Negative symptoms are considered to be
disturbances with regular emotions and behaviors. These symptoms are easily mistaken for

The Negative Effects Of Climate Change
Climate Change There s one issue that will define the contours of this century more dramatically than
any other, and that is the urgent threat of a changing climate. (Barack Obama). Climate change has
been a popular topic of discussion for years now, due to its crucial threat to our environment. The
world will forever be altered if climate change isn t taken into serious consideration and not in a good
way. Climate change is happening now and immediate action should be taken to stop it. The damage
to our earth cannot always be undone. Climate change has had many negative effects from damaging
coral reefs or the increase of wildfires, but most importantly rising sea levels. Rising sea levels are
caused by the melting of ice correspondingly with the rising temperature in the atmosphere. When the

Roman Empire
The Roman Empire was the post Republican period of the ancient Roman civilization, characterized
by government headed by emperors, and large territorial holdings around the Mediterranean Sea in
Europe, Africa, and Asia. The 500 year old republic which preceded it was severely destabilized in a
series of civil wars and political conflict, during which Julius Caesar was appointed as perpetual
dictator and then assassinated in 44 BC. Civil wars and executions continued, culminating in the
victory of Octavian, Caesar s adopted son, over Mark Antony and Cleopatra at the Battle of Actium in

It was the largest empire of the Classical antiquity period, and one of the largest empires in world
history. At its height under Trajan, it covered 6.8 million square kilometers and held sway over some

the Empire ensured the lasting influence of Latin and Greek language, culture, religion, inventions,
architecture, philosophy, law and forms of government on the Empire s descendants. Throughout the
European medieval period, attempts were even made to establish successors to the Roman Empire,
including the Crusader state, the Empire of Romania and the Holy Roman Empire. By means of
European expansionism through the Spanish, French, Portuguese, Dutch, Italian, German, British,
Belgian empires, Roman and Greek culture was spread on a worldwide scale, playing a significant

Rome had begun expanding shortly after the founding of the Republic in the 6th century BC, though it

Sexual Orientation Influence
The study of the development of sexual orientation has transformed greatly in the past few decades.
Beliefs such as homosexual attraction being a choice and homosexuality being the result of faulty
psychological development caused by sexual abuse and other troubling childhood experiences have
been labelled as prejudice, incorrect and have been discarded by most scientists. But what does cause
a person to develop one sexual orientation over another? The truth is that the exact causes for the
development of a particular sexual orientation have not been discovered yet. A lot of research has been
conducted to determine the influence of genetics, hormones, development, and social and cultural
influences. These studies have led many to believe that biology and environment play a complex role
in forming a person s sexual preference. This goes along with what has been discussed in class
regarding nature vs. nurture; what determines sexual orientation more than likely lies somewhere on
the spectrum between the two extremes of nature and nurture.

Holistic Model Of Health
According to the World Health Organization (2015, para 2), the definition of holistic model of health
is a state of complete physical, mental and social well being and not merely the absence of disease or

In order to maintain a healthy balance mentally, physically and spiritually, I believe primary

Mark Twain Satire Analysis
The Satirical Musings of Mark Twain Satire is easy to use but difficult to master. If done right it can
transform any piece of literature into a perfect, and beautifully executed, criticism of society. If done
wrong, it will take that potentially beautiful literary art piece and turn it into something that society
loves to shun and schools love to ban. Huckleberry Finn is one of those novels that has the perfect
amount of satire wrapped up in a neat little bundle, and yet it is often still shunned and banned. The
author, Mark Twain, wrote this story at a time when the United States needed it most. Despite the civil
war having been long over, people were still questioning what was right and what was wrong in
regards to slavery and racism. Twain picked up on these issues, and formed his own opinions. All he
was trying to do was share them in a world that needed a wake up call. In Huckleberry Finn, Mark
Twain uses satirical techniques in his commentary including metaphors, exaggeration, and irony in
order to call attention to issues in society such as race, religion, education, morality, and slavery. The
most common approach that Twain uses in his commentary to make his point is to be very plain and
simple, but express his thoughts through metaphors and symbolism. The reader never really has to
question what his metaphors mean, but having them in his writing softens the blow a little bit. The
Mississippi river, as an example, is one of the largest metaphors in the entire story. It represents
freedom and equality, whereas the shore represents a feuding society. Chapter nineteen is where the
reader gets to see the contrast very clearly. The entire first half of the chapter is very idyllic and
serene. Huck comments on the serenity of the river saying there ... wasn t a sound [anywhere]
perfectly still just like the whole world was asleep, and that they had the sky up there, all speckled
with stars (Twain, Chapter 19). The scenes on the river paint very calming pictures in the reader s
mind. Then, Huck and Jim get off of the raft, and everything becomes chaotic. Jim almost always
finds himself back in captivity in one form or another, and Huck always finds himself questioning his
newly learned morals.

Essay about Foods Containing High Fructose Corn Syrup
Abstract:
This research paper will discuss the history, economics, and positive and negative aspects of foods
which contain high fructose corn syrup. It will cover the basic information in these aspects as well as
some specifics. The major milestones in the history of high fructose corn syrup include its creation in
1957. Three different types of high fructose corn syrup will also be briefly compared against one
another: high fructose corn syrup #1, high fructose corn syrup #2, and high fructose corn syrup #3.
Pros and cons of high fructose corn syrup will then be discussed as well as economic issues. The fact
that it is only available in liquid form is the main factor. Lastly, common foods containing high

Soon afterward, a patent on this process was issued to Marshall in 1960. In the same year, Tsumura
and Sato reported the isolation of a specific soil organism that would produce an enzyme that
converted glucose to fructose (Inglett, 88). By converting large amounts of glucose into fructose, corn
syrup was promoted to high fructose corn syrup, abbreviated as HFCS, one of the sweetest and most
widely used sweeteners available.
However, it took 10 years for it to be sold and available to the public in the United States: High
fructose corn syrup was first mass produced at Clinton Corn Processing Company in 1967 (Ettlinger,
56). Japan actually started using high fructose corn syrup earlier and was the first in the world to
produce them in limited commercial quantities that contained 14 16 percent fructose in Japan during
the mid 1960 s (Inglett, 93). Further research and expansion enabled the industry to develop a higher
conversion and the first commercial shipment of 42 percent fructose syrup took place a year later
(Corn Refiner s Association).

Constant improvements in technology allow products to be produced more cheaply and quickly, which
now make it possible to produce profitable products containing 47% fructose (Inglett, 93). High
fructose corn syrup has numerous advantages that make it so much more economically competitive.
Firstly, high fructose corn syrup, on a dry substance basis, has the same

Current Status of the Electronic Health Records in the...
For years now, the healthcare system in the United States have managed patient s health records
through paper charting, this has since changed for the better with the introduction of an electronic
medical record (EMR) system. This type of system has helped healthcare providers, hospitals and
other ambulatory institutions extract data from a patient s chart to help expedite clinical diagnosis and
providing necessary care. Although this form of technology shows great promise, studies have shown
that this system is just a foundation to the next evolution of health technology. The transformation of
EMR to electronic heath record system (EHR) is the ultimate goal of the federal government.
Adoption of Meaningful Use in Today s Healthcare ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Currently only 4.4% of hospital meet a majority of the fourteen core measures of meaningful use (pg.
122). With such a slow progression to adopt an EHR system, government groups such as CMS have
been encouraged by the government to provide financial incentives to providers who adopt the
meaningful use requirements via EHR and those who fail to adopt may face penalties like the
reduction of Medicare and Medicaid reimbursements (Hebda Czar, 2013, p.281). Benefits to EHR
over Paper charting One of the primary reasons that the electronic health system exist is to allow
universal access to a health records by all healthcare professionals providing care to a particular
patient. In a society with a vastly growing population with increasing comorbidities and demands for
sooner diagnoses; the role of the paper charting no longer meets the demands of today s healthcare
system. If for example a patient with a history of Type II diabetes was admitted to the ER, the
presence of his records through an EHR system can confirm that is he has had uncontrolled diabetes
for some years now and fast interventions can be initiated to provide optimal care. This system
provides an updated and accurate snapshot of a patient s health history, most importantly this type of
communication is a key element in emergent situations when a patient finds themselves

`` Repent, Harlequin, By Harlan Ellison
Harlan Ellison uses strong imagery in his short story Repent, Harlequin! said the Ticktockman to
better develop the characters and setting. The personalities of both the Harlequin and the Ticktockman
are developed through Ellison s imagery of their physical forms and of their personas. The dull setting
of the short story is created through the author s imagery of machinery, particularly clockwork, and
Mondrian arrangements. Ellison s use of imagery allows the reader to pull from this story deeper,
more significant meaning than what appears on the surface. According to White, the disruptive and
rebellious Harlequin is an anomaly: the only human being distinguishable from machines (White, 1).
In order to clearly establish the Harlequin as the only individual within his society, Ellison employs
the use of strong imagery to cause him to stand out among the rest of the characters. One way that
Ellison does this is using rather outlandish language to describe the Harlequin. Aside from being a
personality, which in and of itself is outrageous to the System, the Harlequin is also a laughing,
irresponsible japer of jabberwocky and jive (953, 955). This imagery of a jester or a jokester creates
the idea that the Harlequin is merely a nuisance to his society rather than a dangerous rebellious force.
When the Harlequin is flying the air boat that he uses to drop jelly beans on to the metronomic Timkin
workers, he is not described as merely flying this boat over the people

The Prince Chapter Summaries
The Prince
The Prince was written nearly 500 years ago; it serves as a practical guide for successful ruling. The
book s 26 chapters can be divided into four sections: Chapters 1 11 discuss the different types of
principalities or states, Chapters 12 14 discuss the different types of armies and the proper conduct of
a prince as military leader, Chapters 15 23 discuss the character and behavior of the prince, and
Chapters 24 26 discuss Italy s desperate political situation. The final chapter is a plea for the Medici
family to supply the prince who will lead Italy out of humiliation. Machiavelli starts the book by
describing the different kinds of states. Arguing that all starts are either republics or principalities.

Agricultural Export Commodities ( Stokes Howden 2010 )
The wine industry in Australia is one of the most highly valued agricultural export commodities
(Stokes Howden 2010). Viticulture is an agricultural sector that is closely associated with climate as
the production of unique wine is reliant upon specific combinations of climate, soils and landscape to
create particular styles (Stokes Howden 2010; Webb et al. 2008). Changes in climate have potential to
adversely affect the quality of winegrape production. Thus, climate change is set to become a major
challenge for the wine industry, and contest the adaptive capability of the industry. As a result of the
increasing awareness of the potential consequences of significant climate variability, it is essential that
the industry explores possible strategies to enable adaptation to change.
The Margaret River wine region
The Margaret River wine region of Western Australia is highly regarded as a premium wine region in
Australia (Jones et al. 2010). The production of high quality wines, however, means that the region
has potential to suffer from modifications in quality by the slightest climatic changes. Thus, climate
change has potential to adversely impact the viticultural industry. At present, the Margaret River wine
region experiences a Mediterranean style climate, with factors of temperature, soil quality and
humidity all well suited to high quality wine production. The economic impact of the Margaret River
wine industry is approximately an annual $250 million. Climate

Fusion Research Paper
Fusion
is the process of combining the nuclei of smaller atoms(less protons neutrons and hence, a smaller
atomic number) to create a larger atom. In many stars, the process starts with hydrogen (H) atoms
combining to form helium atoms (He) then combining again to form Beryllium (Be) atoms and so
on... The process stops when all the atoms are converted to Iron (Fe) and the star is thus dead. The
reason for this is that once the atoms reach Iron and higher, the energy required to fuse the atoms
becomes greater than the energy released by the atoms.
Fusion occurs naturally in environments where a sufficiently large amount of matter is collapsed under
gravitational pressure that atoms are stripped of their electrons and nuclei have a sufficiently low
mean free path (i.e. their density is fairly high). The aggregate of matter forming such an object is then
usually referred to as a star.

Prior Appropriation
The dust settled as the last vehicle departed the newly established ghost town. What was once a
bustling rural community in eastern Colorado, complete with a school and church, and businesses off
the main street, has become deserted due to a lack of water. This has become an all too familiar scene
in rural communities across Colorado as the increasing demand for water and the dwindling water
supply pits water users against one another. The state s free market style of appropriating water,
known as prior appropriation, allows for this highly competitive, and often detrimental situation to
persist. As climate change and population growth continue to strain the water supply in Colorado, it

The environment, and recreational activities that are essential to the outdoors, have also been
negatively impacted by this system for allocating water rights. The issue of whether or not this system

companies, and manufacturing. Furthermore, as Jones and Cech point out, environmental concerns

The Killer Angels Book Review
June 21, 2012 The Killer Angels by Michael Shaara: The Random House Publishing Group, New

The Killer Angels is a stunning recollection of the telltale battle of the Civil War: the Battle of
Gettysburg. Set from June 29 to July 3, 1863 and told from the vantage points of several soldiers and
commanding officers from both sides, including Lee, Longstreet, and Chamberlain, Michael Shaara
effectively paints a picture of the war that divided America, from the tactical planning to the emotional

During one such moment, Chamberlain is reminded of a Shakespearean speech: What a piece of work

Well, boy, if he s an angel, he s sure a murderin angel. (page 126). From this interaction, Chamberlain
came up with Man: the Killer Angels , a thought he often revisited over the course of the Battle of
Gettysburg, and from which the book acquires its title. Chamberlain acted with the intention of getting
something positive out of the war. He never treated the Confederates as though they were less than
him: Chamberlain put out a hand. Sir he said. The Alabama man nodded slightly. His voice was so low
Chamberlain could hardly hear it. Do you have some water? Certainly. Chamberlain offered his own

Appomattox. Overall, I found Michael Shaara s The Killer Angels an interesting book; it shed a new
and different light on the Battle of Gettysburg by showing it from multiple points of view. I believe
that Shaara was successful in writing in the diction of his chosen narrators; he used slang and dropped
g s for the Confederate soldiers and used proper grammar and British terminology for the Englishman,
Freemantle. I was also impressed by his knowledge of military terms and the effectiveness of which
he used them. The terms were used enough that

Theme Of Sin In The Scarlett Letter
Sin and Symbols in The Scarlett Letter Sin is present in everyone s life and no human can escape its
reach. In The Scarlett letter the main conflict is rooted in one sin between a man and a woman in
colonial Massachusetts. The sin was adultery and there are several vital themes and symbols that stem
from it. Sin controls and characterizes lives in so many ways that people do not realize. This is
highlighted throughout The Scarlett Letter. Sin and revenge are symbolized by Pearl and nature in
many instances throughout several different chapters. Sin is the most prominent and reoccurring
theme in The Scarlett Letter. Opportunities arose due to Hester s husband being away for an extended
period. After Hester committed adultery with Reverend Dimmesdale her life was forever changed and
furthermore characterized by this theme. He could never escape his inner guilt for his sin with Hester
but could not bring himself to publicly repent. Hester continued her series of poor choices by agreeing
to keep the father of her baby a secret, so he would not be publicly punished and shamed. The theme

Essay On Mrs. Miniver
The film, Mrs. Miniver, is a 1942 American romantic war drama film based on the 1940 novel of the
same name. Mrs. Miniver portrays life in England during the Second World War. The film shows how
the life of an unassuming British housewife in rural England is touched by World War II. She sees her
eldest son go to war, finds herself confronting a German pilot who has parachuted into her idyllic
village while her husband is participating in the Dunkirk evacuation, and loses her daughter in law as
a causality. The film opens up with a title sequence describing the setting and time: Summer 1939 in
Belham, England, a fictional village outside the big city of London. Mrs. Miniver has three kids:
young Toby and Judy, and the older Vin. The events of the movie begin with Mrs. Miniver navigating
the streets of London trying to get to a store to buy a hat. The atmosphere of the country is conveyed
by describing the excessive shopping of the locals without a care for cost. As Lady Beldon puts it,
Trying to be better than their betters. Action turns to the Miniver household, called Starlings. Here, the
layout of such a middle class suburban house is displayed: ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The show/festival acts as a sense of tradition a way to celebrate and come together in mutual high
spirit of life. Lady Beldon is the winner, despite the fact that it is made obvious that Mr. Ballard s rose
was the better flower. Out of good spirit, Lady Beldon concedes to Mr. Ballard. Nevertheless, the
festivities are cut short as air sirens are sounded as German airplanes are approaching. Mrs. Miniver
and Carol drive Vin back to the airfield to partake in the ongoing dogfight as everyone heads for
cover. On the way back from dropping Vin off, Carol is wounded from a spray of bullets from one of
the German planes. Before an ambulance can be brought to the Miniver house, Carol

Oedipus And John Anderton Comparison
Some questions are better left unanswered. Today we have the technology to tell you all the possible
diseases one person can ever get. While this technology exists, it is not used as often as one would
think. The thing is, no one wants to know what is going to happen to them. There are certain things we
cannot change. What if it was not a disease? What if it was something you had the power to change?
Would you still not want to know the answer? This situation occurs time and again. Everyone wants
the power to change their fate, but not many know they have this power until they no longer have the
opportunity to use it. John Anderton from Steven Spielberg s Minority Report and Oedipus from
Sophocles Oedipus the King search for wisdom, but John uses it to save himself while Oedipus uses it
to damn himself. Both of these characters search for wisdom affects their lives and the people around
them. The wisdom they pursued gave them both at one point or another the opportunity to change. But
was this change for better or for worse? Oedipus was living in ignorant bliss. He ... Show more

Oedipus situation seems absolutely futile, he already carried it out, it is already in the past and he
cannot change any of his actions because they already happened. A character trait both of these
characters share is a stubbornness that will never sway them from their search. John says to Agatha, a
precog, played by Samantha Morton, I can t, I have to know, I have to find out, after she tells him that
he has a choice and he can walk away. John s stubbornness comes through in this moment. Oedipus
says something very similar when Jocasta tries to do the same thing and pleads with him not to pursue
the truth, and to leave his questions unanswered, he says, Such is my lineage and I shall not betray it. I
will not give up the search for the truth about my birth, (Sophocles

A Case Study On Southwest And Will Address Acquisitions
Mergers and acquisitions have always been around and have been popular in the United States for
decades. It has been said that that mergers and acquisitions have contributed to the reconstruction of
businesses during the 80 s and 90 s. The following is an analysis of a case study on Southwest and will
address acquisitions, mergers, and restructuring. Acquisitions are popular in the United States and
there are many reasons why a company decides to acquire another company. Companies will decide to
acquire a business in order to increase market power. Market power happens when a company sells its
good or services above competitive levels. If a company attains a high market power, it can become a
leader (Hitt, Ireland, Hoskisson, 2015). Acquisitions that are competing in the same industry as the
acquiring firm is called a Horizontal acquisitions Horizontal acquisitions also increase a company s
market power. According to the class textbook, horizontal acquisition are a result in higher
performance when a company have similar characteristics (Hitt, Ireland, Hoskisson, 2015). For
example, has somewhat of the same strategy and decision making styles. Another type of acquisition
is vertical acquisitions, which refers to a company who purchases a supplier or a distribution of
products they use. A vertical acquisition gives the firm additional controls (Hitt, Ireland, Hoskisson,
2015). A merger is a strategy where two companies agree to combine. Mergers are popular among

Listening To Aretha s Song R-E-S-E-T
Band Members: King Curtis (Sax)(Tenor), Carolyn Franklin (Vocals)(background), Willie Bridges
(Sax)(Baritone), Charles Chalmers (Sax)(Tenor), Gene Chrisman(Drums), Tommy Cogbill(Bass), Tom
Dowd(Engineer), Jimmy Johnson(Guitar), Melvin Lastie (Trumpet, Cornet), Chips Moman(Guitar),
Dewey Oldham(Organ). Track 1 ( Respect ): This is one of my favorite song in this album and by far
one of the most popular! The song starts out with an uplifting and exciting piano introduction. At 1:50,
I think it was quite a brilliant idea to spell R E S P E C T out for people in case they missed it. Aretha
sings with a lot of confidence and command and her spirit is just as inspirational as the lyrics she sings
which also speaks for freedom, faith, love, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I could feel her singing with such amazing subtlety soulful passion. Aretha s approach is almost
spiritual by comparison, reflecting her gospel roots of her being a pastor s daughter. During the bridge,
I think she sounds like she has entered a state of joyful religious excitement. I also enjoyed this track
and how she also sang with confidence. Track 3 ( I never loved a man the way ): All I could think of
this track is Wow! to me this song was how Aretha Franklin we have come to know as truly
introduced herself to the word as The Queen of Soul. The song starts out with a nicely played piano
and drums which was an intro to start singing. In the first couple of lines I could feel the pain/emotion
in her voice (from 0:08 0:24). I also loved when the trumpets came in at 0:40, this added a bit of a
Jazzy flavor to the song. Track 4 ( Do right woman, do right man ): This song just happens to also be
one of my favorites. This is quite possibly to my understanding the best version of the song, although
Gram Parsons had a good composition. The song is a combination of beautifully recorded piano and
bass instruments. Aretha Franklin s vocals is totally wonderful and full of emotion, sadness, yet joy all
at the same time. I liked the chorus with the background vocals starting at 1:15, it really gives a

Rite Of Passage ( 1983 )

ENGL 111
10/7/2015
Rite of Passage (1983) Sharon Olds
As the guests arrive at my son s party they gather in the living room short men, men in first grade with
smooth jaws and chins.
Hands in pockets, they stand around jostling, jockeying for place, small fights breaking out and
calming. One says to another
How old are you? Six. I m seven. So?
They eye each other, seeing themselves tiny in the other s pupils. They clear their throats a lot, a room
of small bankers, they fold their arms and frown. I could beat you up, a seven says to a six, the dark
cake, round and heavy as a turret, behind them on the table. My son, freckles like specks of nutmeg on
his cheeks, chest narrow as the balsa keel of a model boat, long hands cool and thin as the day they
guided him out of me, speaks up as a host for the sake of the group.
We could easily kill a two year old, he says in his clear voice. The other men agree, they clear their
throats like Generals, they relax and get down to playing war, celebrating my son s life.
.Introduction/Overview
In Sharon Olds Rite of Passage , talk about how the rite of passage, a ceremony of whose definition
are a significant transition or an important event or achievement, is seen as having great meaning in
lives of individuals; but portrayed by the lives of a mother and son in a twisted and dark way when
these events lies on the negative side of society. The poem become darker and more disturbing as it
progresses, and the

Promoting Media Literacy Through Early Exposure to Technology
Promoting Media Literacy Through Early Exposure to Technology
Introduction:
The concept of media literacy is an increasingly important one in our everyday lives. The television,
the internet and mobile smartphones have allowed for the penetration of media based technology in
virtually every aspect of our collective lifestyle. The need for and use of such technologies is
inescapable if one aspires to interact with the modern world in a social or professional manner. And
for younger media and technology users in particularly, Social Networking, blogging and a need for
smart navigation of the web have generally become normative experiences. Therefore, it is incumbent
upon us to ensure that our children our educated according to these evolving conditions. Indeed, while
questions persist as to the balance of risks and opportunities in exposing children to certain
technologies at an early age, the discussion here will promote the thesis that properly controlled early
exposure to television and web use are important to the critical process of teaching media literacy to
young learners.
Goal:
The primary goal of the present study is to provide an overview of the value in providing children
with early exposure to evolving media technology such as television and the internet while also
offering some notes of caution that might better inform parents and educators on how to control this
exposure experience. Indeed, as the research presented hereafter will demonstrate, there

Italian Piano Research Paper
Two types of stringed keyboard instrument were available to the household or court musician from the
16th century to the middle of the 18th: the harpsichord and its near relations, the spinet and virginal;
and the clavichord. In the harpsichord family the string is plucked by a small plectrum, originally of
quill. The variety of sound from these plucked instruments is achieved not primarily by finger
pressure, but more subtly by phrasing and articulation. Variety of tonal color can be obtained, on a
harpsichord by judicious choice of registration. The harpsichord was used both for solo performance
and accompanying in chamber groups and in larger ensembles of the period. It typically had two sets
of strings per key, tuned either to the same pitch or with one set sounding an octave higher (a 4
register). The registers were controlled by hand stops above the keyboard. Two manuals (keyboards)
were to be found on certain larger instruments, which usually featured three sets of strings. Found
from the beginning of the 16th century, the Italian harpsichords were lightly ... Show more content on

Flemish instruments were more solidly constructed than the Italian, invariably with the basic two sets
of strings (either one 8 and a 4 or both at 8 pitch). Two manuals were common, though the upper
manual was originally used for transposing; only in the second half of the 17th century was the
additional manual used for contrast of tone with the ability to couple the registers of both manuals for
a fuller sound. The Flemish often painted their instruments, decorative lids and soundboards being
common features. French instruments developed from the Flemish design. Many so called French
harpsichords were in fact Flemish in origin, rebuilt by French makers who increased the compass in

On the surface, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz seems like an innocent fairy tale that was written solely to pleasure children today ; however a deeper look into the main characters and symbolism inherent in the story, suggest an outlook into the Gilded Age. Many historians, beginning with Henry Littlefield, have interpreted The Wizard of Oz as being an allegory to the Populist Movement and the issue of money that surrounded the Gilded Age. On the other hand, the Republicans comprising mostly of bankers and industrialists rallied for the gold standard because they wanted to keep the value of the dollar high to retain their monopolistic power. The gold standard would also be beneficial to the creditors because the amount of money they received from the debtors would be valued a lot more than that which they initially lent out. Thus the stage was set for the battle of the standards in the elections 1896 between the Populist and Democrat nominee William Jennings Bryan and the Republican candidate William McKinley. Baum writes The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, with the battle between the Republicans and the Populists as the main basis for its plot structure. L. Frank Baum s background is instrumental in understanding the parallels between The Wizard of Oz and the Gilded Age in which Baum lived. Baum lived in South Dakota during the period when Populism was gaining popularity. Western farmers had naturally rallied for the Populist cause of better crop prices (inflation) because of droughts which destroyed their crops. Baum was witness to the misery of the Western farmer and therefore sympathetic towards them. There is however some confusion regarding Baum s political beliefs. Henry M. • 20. Mark Twain Satire Analysis The Satirical Musings of Mark Twain Satire is easy to use but difficult to master. If done right it can transform any piece of literature into a perfect, and beautifully executed, criticism of society. If done wrong, it will take that potentially beautiful literary art piece and turn it into something that society loves to shun and schools love to ban. Huckleberry Finn is one of those novels that has the perfect amount of satire wrapped up in a neat little bundle, and yet it is often still shunned and banned. The author, Mark Twain, wrote this story at a time when the United States needed it most. Despite the civil war having been long over, people were still questioning what was right and what was wrong in regards to slavery and racism. Twain picked up on these issues, and formed his own opinions. All he was trying to do was share them in a world that needed a wake up call. In Huckleberry Finn, Mark Twain uses satirical techniques in his commentary including metaphors, exaggeration, and irony in order to call attention to issues in society such as race, religion, education, morality, and slavery. The most common approach that Twain uses in his commentary to make his point is to be very plain and simple, but express his thoughts through metaphors and symbolism. The reader never really has to question what his metaphors mean, but having them in his writing softens the blow a little bit. The Mississippi river, as an example, is one of the largest metaphors in the entire story. It represents freedom and equality, whereas the shore represents a feuding society. Chapter nineteen is where the reader gets to see the contrast very clearly. The entire first half of the chapter is very idyllic and serene. Huck comments on the serenity of the river saying there ... wasn t a sound [anywhere] perfectly still just like the whole world was asleep, and that they had the sky up there, all speckled with stars (Twain, Chapter 19). The scenes on the river paint very calming pictures in the reader s mind. Then, Huck and Jim get off of the raft, and everything becomes chaotic. Jim almost always finds himself back in captivity in one form or another, and Huck always finds himself questioning his newly learned morals. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In the same year, Tsumura and Sato reported the isolation of a specific soil organism that would produce an enzyme that converted glucose to fructose (Inglett, 88). However, it took 10 years for it to be sold and available to the public in the United States: High fructose corn syrup was first mass produced at Clinton Corn Processing Company in 1967 (Ettlinger, 56). • 26. `` Repent, Harlequin, By Harlan Ellison Harlan Ellison uses strong imagery in his short story Repent, Harlequin! said the Ticktockman to better develop the characters and setting. The personalities of both the Harlequin and the Ticktockman are developed through Ellison s imagery of their physical forms and of their personas. The dull setting of the short story is created through the author s imagery of machinery, particularly clockwork, and Mondrian arrangements. Ellison s use of imagery allows the reader to pull from this story deeper, more significant meaning than what appears on the surface. According to White, the disruptive and rebellious Harlequin is an anomaly: the only human being distinguishable from machines (White, 1). In order to clearly establish the Harlequin as the only individual within his society, Ellison employs the use of strong imagery to cause him to stand out among the rest of the characters. One way that Ellison does this is using rather outlandish language to describe the Harlequin. Aside from being a personality, which in and of itself is outrageous to the System, the Harlequin is also a laughing, irresponsible japer of jabberwocky and jive (953, 955). This imagery of a jester or a jokester creates the idea that the Harlequin is merely a nuisance to his society rather than a dangerous rebellious force. When the Harlequin is flying the air boat that he uses to drop jelly beans on to the metronomic Timkin workers, he is not described as merely flying this boat over the people ... Viticulture is an agricultural sector that is closely associated with climate as the production of unique wine is reliant upon specific combinations of climate, soils and landscape to create particular styles (Stokes Howden 2010; Webb et al. 2008). Changes in climate have potential to adversely affect the quality of winegrape production. Thus, climate change is set to become a major challenge for the wine industry, and contest the adaptive capability of the industry. As a result of the increasing awareness of the potential consequences of significant climate variability, it is essential that the industry explores possible strategies to enable adaptation to change. The Margaret River wine region The Margaret River wine region of Western Australia is highly regarded as a premium wine region in Australia (Jones et al. 2010). The production of high quality wines, however, means that the region has potential to suffer from modifications in quality by the slightest climatic changes. Thus, climate change has potential to adversely impact the viticultural industry. • 29. Fusion Research Paper Fusion is the process of combining the nuclei of smaller atoms(less protons neutrons and hence, a smaller atomic number) to create a larger atom. In many stars, the process starts with hydrogen (H) atoms combining to form helium atoms (He) then combining again to form Beryllium (Be) atoms and so on... The process stops when all the atoms are converted to Iron (Fe) and the star is thus dead. The reason for this is that once the atoms reach Iron and higher, the energy required to fuse the atoms becomes greater than the energy released by the atoms. Fusion occurs naturally in environments where a sufficiently large amount of matter is collapsed under gravitational pressure that atoms are stripped of their electrons and nuclei have a sufficiently low mean free path (i.e. their density is fairly high). While this technology exists, it is not used as often as one would think. The thing is, no one wants to know what is going to happen to them. There are certain things we cannot change. What if it was not a disease? What if it was something you had the power to change? Would you still not want to know the answer? This situation occurs time and again. Everyone wants the power to change their fate, but not many know they have this power until they no longer have the opportunity to use it. John Anderton from Steven Spielberg s Minority Report and Oedipus from Sophocles Oedipus the King search for wisdom, but John uses it to save himself while Oedipus uses it to damn himself. Track 1 ( Respect ): This is one of my favorite song in this album and by far one of the most popular! The song starts out with an uplifting and exciting piano introduction. At 1:50, I think it was quite a brilliant idea to spell R E S P E C T out for people in case they missed it. Aretha s approach is almost spiritual by comparison, reflecting her gospel roots of her being a pastor s daughter. During the bridge, I think she sounds like she has entered a state of joyful religious excitement. I also enjoyed this track and how she also sang with confidence. Track 3 ( I never loved a man the way ): All I could think of this track is Wow! to me this song was how Aretha Franklin we have come to know as truly introduced herself to the word as The Queen of Soul. The song starts out with a nicely played piano and drums which was an intro to start singing. In the first couple of lines I could feel the pain/emotion in her voice (from 0:08 0:24). I also loved when the trumpets came in at 0:40, this added a bit of a Jazzy flavor to the song. Track 4 ( Do right woman, do right man ): This song just happens to also be one of my favorites. This is quite possibly to my understanding the best version of the song, although Gram Parsons had a good composition. The song is a combination of beautifully recorded piano and bass instruments. Aretha Franklin s vocals is totally wonderful and full of emotion, sadness, yet joy all at the same time. I liked the chorus with the background vocals starting at 1:15, it really gives a groovy ... Rite Of Passage ( 1983 ) Duc Tran ENGL 111 10/7/2015 Rite of Passage (1983) Sharon Olds As the guests arrive at my son s party they gather in the living room short men, men in first grade with smooth jaws and chins. Hands in pockets, they stand around jostling, jockeying for place, small fights breaking out and calming. One says to another How old are you? Six. I m seven. So? They eye each other, seeing themselves tiny in the other s pupils. They clear their throats a lot, a room of small bankers, they fold their arms and frown. I could beat you up, a seven says to a six, the dark cake, round and heavy as a turret, behind them on the table. My son, freckles like specks of nutmeg on his cheeks, chest narrow as the balsa keel of a model boat, long hands cool and thin as the day they guided him out of me, speaks up as a host for the sake of the group. We could easily kill a two year old, he says in his clear voice. The harpsichord was used both for solo performance and accompanying in chamber groups and in larger ensembles of the period. It typically had two sets of strings per key, tuned either to the same pitch or with one set sounding an octave higher (a 4 register). The registers were controlled by hand stops above the keyboard.
