Immanuel Kant Research Paper
Immanuel Kant was born April 22, 1724 in Konigsberg.Immanuel Kant, a German philosopher best
known for his work The Critique of Pure Reason, was one of the first to describe this era with the
word Enlightenment. (Ellis 183 184). He attended the collegium Fridericianum at the age of eight,
Latin school that taught primarily classicism. (Immanuel Kant Biography). Immanuel Kant went to the
University of Konigsberg, or also know as Albertina. Kant was born into an artisan family. His father
was a harness marker and a pietist. Pietism is the stress on the emotional and personal aspects of
religion. His mother s father was also a master harness maker, and she was better educated that the
other women.
When Immanuel Kant was finished with college he became a private tutor for children outside
Konigsberg. He was a private tutor for six years, then later became a teacher at Albertina. He would
stay at Albertina for four decades and teach philosophy. He retired from teach in 1796, which ... Show

The effects of his metaphysics, epistemology ,ethics and aesthetics was important to the philosophical
movement that followed him.( Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy. ). A large part of Immanuel Kant
s work came from the question, what can we know . Kant thought that if it can be stated simply, and
our knowledge is constrained to mathematics and the science of the natural, empirical word. There
were two major methods in the early modern time of philosophy that had a major impact on Immanuel
Kant. The first one was Empiricism. Empiricism is the theory that all knowledge is derived from sense
experience. The second method was Rationalism. Rationalism is a theory that opinions and actions
should be based on reason and knowledge rather than religious belief or emotional response. Kant
believed that both of the theories of the philosophers arguments had some flaws to them. ( Internet

Essay on Art Formal Analysis
Art Formal Analysis Examining the formal qualities of Homer Watson s painting Horse and Rider In A
Landscape was quite interesting. I chose to analyze this piece as apposed to the others because it was
the piece I liked the least, therefore making me analyze it more closely and discover other aspects of
the work, besides aesthetics.
The texture of the canvas works very well with the subject matter portrayed in the painting. The grassy
hill side and the leaves of the trees are especially complimented by the canvas. It makes the leaves feel
like they are slightly moving, this combined with the lack of detail itself the leaves. This is contrasted
nicely with the very detailed renderings of the trunks and branches of the trees, the ... Show more

Perspective lines occur also in the background of the painting in the upper right in the trees getting
smaller as they descend into the painting. This painting is an example of linear perspective. All lines
converge at a vanishing point.
At first sight the house in the middle ground appears to be the destination of the rider, but the use of
linear perspective suggests that something else is important beyond the house and the green hill.
This painting appears to take place either at either dusk or dawn, when the sun is at the horizon. Likely
it is dusk, as the setting appears to be in the Northern Hemisphere and the snow in the picture residing
on the left hand side of fence would suggest it has yet to melt, so the sun would be setting in the west,
or on the right. So the viewer, as well as the subject, is facing south. This affects the painting in
several ways. The lighting is very dramatic, the middle ground being very much more lighted than the
foreground and background, therefore the colors are more saturated than the foreground and
background. Greens, browns and greys are used a lot in this piece and makes it very muddy. The
house really does stand out against the painting because of the contrast of lighting.
The piece is pretty balanced, it is more or less partitioned into four parts by the strong horizontal line
in the middle and the road meeting with the edge of the forest vertically, the lighter areas in the top
right and bottom left,

Professional Air Traffic Controllers Organization V....
PROFESSIONAL AIR TRAFFIC CONTROLLERS ORGANIZATION V. REAGAN: THE STRIKE
THAT HELPED SHAPE U. S. LABOR RELATIONS
Thirty one years ago, when President Ronald Reagan threatened to fire approximately
13,000 air traffic controllers unless they called off an illegal strike, the president not only transformed
his presidency, but also shaped the labor relations in the United States.
The Professional Air Traffic Controllers Organization (PATCO) strike of August 3. 1981 was a
remarkable day in the history of this country. Under the direction of union president,
Robert E. Poli, 14,500 members declared a nationwide strike. Approximately 11,500 members walked
off their jobs because of contract disputes with the Federal Aviation ... Show more content on

It won an order directing that the stoppage be ended and that controllers return to work. The FAA won
similar orders in Minnesota and Alaska (Northrup 169). As a direct result, the FAA fired fifty two
controllers, of whom forty six were later reinstated to their positions. The FAA also suspended nearly
on thousand more controllers for a short period of time. As a result of the strike, Bailey s tenure as
executive director of PATCO came to an end when his position was abolished. Subsequently, John F.
Leyden was chosen as president, a position that he held for the next ten years. In addition,
Assistant Secretary of Labor W. J. Usery disqualified PATCO as a bargaining agent for 126 days. The
union was later reinstated by Usery and it won exclusive bargaining rights election in 1972. In July
and August of 1976 tensions ran high again after the Civil Service Commissioner declined to
reclassified controllers to a higher salary grade. The result was that PATCO staged slowdowns for five
days at the nation s busiest airports. Its tactics proved successful when on
January 13, 1977, the Commission reversed itself and increased controllers wages (Northrup
170).
In preparations for subsequent strikes, in 1977 PATCO established a strike fund known as the National
Controller Subsistence Fund. 15 percent of the membership dues were

Criminology Theories And Social Bond Theory
Theories of Criminology Fall Term Paper: An Overview of Criminology Theories and Theorists
The theory of Travis Hirschi, which is the social bond theory focuses on the concept of the causes and
the acts of delinquency, which is what this theory is extracted from. This theory emerges when an
individual s bonds to the society and the community around them are weak or broken (Topak, 2017).
The social bond theory can be described as the belief that socialization and personal relationships are
significant aspects of human development, which keep individuals from committing crimes (Topak,
2017). The social bond theory is composed of four key components which are the following:
attachment, commitment, involvement, and beliefs (Topak, 2017). In ... Show more content on

This can then lead to individuals wanting to seek gratification, through crime (Topak, 2017). In this
essay, three theories will be compared and contrasted, which are Robert Merton s theory of crime,
Emile Durkheim s theory, and the classical criminal theory. These will be compared through the use of
the nature and characteristics of criminals, the causes of crimes in each of the theories, and the policy
suggestions, which aides to identify the similarities and differences between each theorists and their
given theories.
First and foremost, Robert Merton s theory of crime is based upon the concepts of strain and
delinquency in individuals, especially individuals who are related to gangs and gang violence (Topak,
2017). Merton states that the individuals that do partake in criminal activity are committing these acts
due to the communal strain placed upon them, in order to live up to expectations, achieve goals, and
gain respect and a status within the society (Topak, 2017). Also, there is an expectation to be
successful in politically reasonable and acquisitive goals (Topak, 2017). The characteristics and
behavior of a criminal in Merton s respective views would be an individual who possesses qualities
such as the following: an individual who results in choosing an alternative lifestyle that does not
conform to society s norms and alternative sets of values. An individual will adopt criminal activity in
order to obtain a comfortable

Comparison between Afternoons and An Arundel Tomb
Comparison between Afternoons and An Arundel Tomb
Both of Larkin s poems explore the loss of identity however they do so in different contexts.
Afternoons depicts the continuation of life and subsequent passing of time through illustration of
changing roles from a relatively carefree character to a young mother who must fully adopt this new
identity and the life changes the title entails. The leaves fall in ones and twos is representative of the
gradual nature of this changing identity which contrasts to the relatively significant transition the
young mother experiences. However leaves is use of natural imagery therefore suggesting this shift of
priorities to becoming a mother is hardly a rare, dramatic occurrence. Our Wedding, ... Show more

Alternatively Afternoons immediately begins with the pessimistic sentence summer is fading which
firstly depicts the somewhat saddening time as the positivity commonly associated with the warm
season starts to disappear and head towards a darker time. This can be interpreted to represent the
vanishing love between husband and wife as the lovers change to husbands in skilled trades and young
mothers which suggests the arrival of children to be burdening or disliked which is true to Larkin s
somewhat pessimistic style. Behind them and Before them are featured at the beginning and the end of
the second stanza, implying a sense of entrapment experienced by the mothers as they re unable to
escape the mundane, domestic situation they now find themselves in therefore relating to the empty
image illustrated by the hollows of afternoons
Larkin also comments on the future in the final stanza s of both poems. In An Arundel Tomb what will
survive us all is love implies that as long as the tomb endures then so with the couple s love
subsequently keeping them alive in people s minds. In contrast to this optimism unusual for Larkin the
quote may also suggest that the effigies are just that, there is no immortality provided by eternal love
as they ve still died and this predicament is a

Analysis Of Quarantine The Loners
The book Quarantine the loners starts out with the main character David who figures out his girlfriend
Hillary has been cheating on him with one of his teammates from his football team. David s mother
did about a year back and David s girlfriend said he hasn t been the same ever since she passed away
and Hillary wouldn t wanna be with David anymore. The next day David and Will were heading back
to school which was a new school with the same teachers and students just a new school. Right as
David and Will enter the school another part of it explodes a canopy has been dropped on top of the

virus can kill or spread to anyone of any age or size when coming close to the infected teen or people.
David has seen two teachers that have been exposed to the teens so far and they are dead. Life has
gotten worse in that area now they have food drops that come from the soldiers from a helicopter, the

comes and attacks the building and they burned it down know the loners are all homeless and starving.

Comparing The Robber Bridegroom And The Grimm Brothers
Fairy tales possess the ability to last throughout the decades. The stories are passed down from
generations and teach valuable lessons in extraordinary ways. In fact, most fairy tales began with oral
storytelling. However, The Grimm Brothers made multiple editions of tales that they claimed as their
own. With over 200 fairy tales, not all of their stories gained the same amount of popularity. Their
more prominent stories, such as Cinderella and Snow White, create a sense of whimsy with talking
animals and love. In contrast, The Robber Bridegroom, a lesser known fairy tale, focuses on dark
ideas: cannibalism and murder. The Grimm Brothers fairy tale The Robber Bridegroom did not reach
the same level of acclaim as other Grimm stories ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Grimm stories usually contain the standard characters of a fairy tale. In a normal fairy tale, the
characters include the fool, the fairy, the wicked crone, the charming prince, and the beautiful damsel
(Heckel). While not all of these characters are always included, most stories contain some
combination of them. These characters help make the iconic setup that makes the story popular. For
instance, the famous fairy tale Snow White shows off a wicked crone, a charming prince, and the
beautiful damsel. Snow White escapes her evil queen mother and ends up with her prince ( Snow
White ). In Snow White, the ideal structure is in place; everything comes together and it has a joyful
ending. However, in The Robber Bridegroom, there is no charming prince or a standard wicked crone
( The Robber ). The daughter is left to defend herself against the suitor and she does not end up with
love. The archetypal characters are not only missing, but the standard theme of love is not present
anywhere within the story. The fairy tale did not reach its full capability because it lacks the archetypal
characters that let readers connect to the

The Uncertainty Of Illness Theory
Introduction Mishel s Uncertainty in Illness Theory is a mid range theory, created using a bi
directional process where the theory informed and was informed by research. The theory looks at how
uncertainty is capable of influencing a patient s ability to become accustomed to their sickness and the
outcome of it. People faced with uncertainty may not know what the outcome of their illness will be or
they may be living with the possibility that their illness will come back. Either way, the theory
examines how people progress and change while dealing with uncertainty. Summary of Theory
Uncertainty as it pertains to illness, is defined as the inability to determine the meaning of illness
related events, occurring when the decision maker is unable to assign definite value to objects or
events, or is unable to predict outcomes accurately (Alligood, 2014). The uncertainty in illness theory
examines how people adapt when they are faced with the uncertainty of illness. The theory considers
patients facing an illness and how the uncertainty they are facing can cognitively be negative or
positive. Depending on the patient s perspective of the situation is the way the patient will cope and
adapt. A patient with an illness, such as cancer, can be highly stressed by the uncertainty of the events
and treatment to take place, which could lead to anxiety, depression, and hopelessness. On the other
hand, a patient who has received a poor prognosis may find hope in the uncertainty, the

Foreshadowing In A Prayer For Owen Meany
A Prayer for Owen Meany, a tragedy John Irving s A Prayer for Owen Meany tells the tragic tale of
Owen Meany, a peculiarly small boy through the eyes of his friend and classmate John Wheelwright.
John Irving creates a tragic effect through his use of third person narration, foreshadowing, and
symbolism. A Prayer for Owen Meany is told from Owen s best friend s point of view, John
Wheelwright, however the novel revolves around Owen. The book opens with John introducing Owen
as someone who greatly impacted him, and saying I am a Christian because of Owen Meany (1). This
opening makes it clear that the narrator is writing this book because of Owen Meany and that the story
is centered around Owen. Throughout the book John idolizes and idealizes ... Show more content on

Owen is a symbol of American ideals, so the loss of Owen is even more tragic because it also stands
for the loss of American ideals. Owen follows the Vietnam war and remembers everything about it. In
high school Owen is The Voice of the school newspaper and through his participation in The Voice he
expresses his ideas about the failures of America and comments on other issues as well. Since Owen s
ideas and commentary are cited as The Voice, he is detached from who he is and he comes off as
important and knowing, showing how he symbolizes American ideals. The Voice is in line with
American ideals because The Voice is always calling out Gravesend Academy, which isn t egalitarian,
and being egalitarian is a fundamental American belief. For example, The Voice calls out the school
for using a shrink for those with learning difficulties IT SEEMS TO ME THAT PEOPLE WHO DON

how Owen is a symbol of American ideals. After Owen dies, John looses faith in America because he
takes all the things Owen used to say to heart and realized that American ideals were gone. He moves
to Canada and while in Canada he can t help but continue to read American newspapers and get
frustrated. He reads The Globe and Mail and says Since when did Mr. Reagan care about remaining

Iago s Motives
In the story Othello, Iago is a very fascinating character. In many ways, he could be viewed as the
main character because of his amount of involvement in the story. His motives could be described as
being very similar to those of Charles Manson. His cunning use of words along with his ability to
relate to the other characters allow him to set up a trap for them that ultimately leads them to do evil
things. Iago is the most evil of all considerable villans because of his lack of reasoning, which makes
him an unresolvable villan.

The Education Of High School Students Essay
Introduction
In today s education of high school students, are we keeping up with the 21st century, or, are we still
doing the same old thing? The British started the idea of traditional schools hundreds of years ago.
After the American Revolution around the late 1700 s, and the early 1800 s, government supported
schools started. These schools educated students of all ages in one room with one teacher. These
schools were not free. In the late 1800 s, high schools were considered to be preparatory academies for
students who were going to attend college. In the early 1900 s, the same schools were transformed into
core elements now preparing students for work after high school. By the middle 1900 s, states
required students to attend school from the ages of 8 14 and to complete elementary school. They also
switched their emphasis back to prepare students for the growing state and private universities. In
2001, the United States entered its current era of education accountability/reform with the institution
of the No Child Left Behind law. The Every Child Succeeds Act has replaced No Child Left Behind.
The 21st century calls for a higher order of skills, abilities, and learning dispositions that society and
workplaces are expecting and demanding. Employers want deeper learning, analytic reasoning,
complex problem solving, teamwork, and experience in career fields.
I think you can agree that our technology is fantastic. We have gone one to one with computers,

The Journey Of Aeneas From Virgil s Aeneid And The...
At a first glance, the journeys of Aeneas from Virgil s Aeneid and Saint Augustine in his
autobiography The Confessions, do not seem to have much in common. In Confessions, Augustine
embarks on a spiritual journey, while Aeneas endures a physical one. After closely reading both texts,
readers can see the powerful, striking connection between Saint Augustine s journey and Aeneas . The
Confessions serves as a personal inspiration to readers by showcasing Augustine s journey towards
God, and His presence throughout that journey. Aeneas ability to overcome hardships because of his
belief in the gods and divine grace, is closely related to Augustine s ability to be exposed to God s
mercy and companionship, even when he did not have faith in Him, because of the notion instilled in
him by God. Divine Providence is evident in both The Aeneid and The Confessions through examples
such as, characters enduring storms as a result of the gods, or dreams confirming that God is in
complete control of the world. Although Augustine has strayed from God, God remains with him.
Throughout The Aeneid, Aeneas showcases divine grace, divine Providence, and self sacrifice, which
makes him relate more closely with Augustine s journey of life than the one written by Virgil. Divine
grace can be defined as the divine influence within humans, which inspires them to resist temptation
and endure tribulations. It also signifies the reawakening of people to God. Throughout The Aeneid,
Aeneas faces many

Types Of Binary Fission Decay
1) Describe the difference between: autotrophs, heterotrophs, chemotrophs, and phototrophs.
Autotrophs are organisms that can synthesize their own energy supply out of inorganic matter, such as
light or chemicals Heterotrophs are organisms that cannot synthesize their own energy, so they receive
their energy by consuming organic matter, such as plants or animals. Chemotrophs are organisms that
acquire energy an oxidation reduction reaction of organic or inorganic chemicals; this meaning the
electron donors of that environment have become oxidized. Phototrophs are organisms that solely use
light as the energy source to produce nutrients, such as the process of photosynthesis.
2) Describe purpose and steps of binary fission. Also, explain how binary fission is described
mathematically and graphically and identify the two interchangeable terms used to describe this
growth.
Binary fission is the process in which a cell grows twice its normal size, and then the cell divides in
half to produce two daughter cells. This process is carried out by unicellular organisms because it is
their only way of reproduction. The cell begins this process by replicating the cell s DNA, and the
duplicated chromosomes attach to the cytoplasmic membrane or microtubules. Once attached, these
attachment sites push the chromosomes apart to expand the entire cell body. The cell now produces a
new cytoplasmic membrane, and along the mid line of the cell a septum begins to form. Upon

Alienation
Alienation
Alienation is defined as; isolation from a group or an activity to which one should belong or in which
one should be involved, but the definition can change depending on a person s experience. Alienation
can come across in many different feeling s such as powerlessness helpless and ineffectual,
meaninglessness having no significance, normlessness lack of social norms, cultural estrangement and
social isolation. In the three chosen texts; Enter Without So Much As Knocking by Bruce Dawe,
Capitalism and Alienation by Danielle Pioli and Be My Brother by Geneueve Clay, alienation is

In contrast to the pig the worker s clothes are painted dirty and unclear brush work has been used. This
brings a sense of self estrangement to the picture, as the worker doesn t care about his work otherwise

Capitalism and Alienation by Danielle Pioli is much like Enter Without So Much As Knocking by
Bruce Dawe. They both show that alienation is caused by external forces and both shows that these
types of alienation, powerlessness and meaninglessness are mainly caused by society how it values
money.
The third text is a short film called Be My Brother by Geneueve Clay. The alienation present in this
film, like the other texts, is caused by external forces. In contrast to the two texts, the film show the
cause of this alienation is a stereotypical point of view towards the main character Richard. This
causes Richard to be socially alienated throughout the film. There are also signs of cultural
estrangement and family alienation. In the establishing shot, alienation is created through the main
character Richard. This is shown through the many camera techniques, such as close up of hand as

scene shows Richard, alone on the foreshore, amusing himself with his play acting. This immediately

interesting for one to read through. The effects the social classes had on Isabella were arguably greater
than any other major character in the story. She was attracted to the drama, gossip, and vigor of that
lifestyle. Isabella thrived on knowing the important information about people in the society, and she
was well learned on other people s personal lives. The idea of having a rich and popular and important
husband caught her attention more than marrying for love did. She was engaged to James for love, but
once a better offer came along in the form of Captain Frederick Tilney, she had a change of heart.
Suddenly, she was content with leaving behind her fiancé of humble beginnings and earning for

Food Deserts in Chicago
Background
Healthy eating is vital to eliminating sickness and diseases in one s life. Many people suffer from
diabetes, obesity, heart conditions, and high blood pressure because of improper eating habits. To a
degree, most of these eating habits are related to limited access to produce healthy foods. The
increasing amount of food deserts and lack of family income contributes to African American obesity
rates, and lack of healthy choices. Ironically, these food desserts reside in communities plagued by
poverty. These income restrictions also add to the problems that are part of being in a food desert.
Literature Review
Mari Gallagher(2006). Examining the Impact of Food Deserts on Public Health in Chicago
Food deserts are places where healthy foods are not produced nor sold. Unfortunately, Chicago is
filled with food deserts. Approximately 600,000 people reside in areas that consist of food deserts
(Gallagher, 2006). Nearly 200,000 of those people are children. These children do not have the
opportunity for healthier options, which shows an increase in obesity rates (News One Staff, 2011).
There are 77 Chicago communities and out of that 77, 23 are food deserts (Gallagher, 2006).
Chicagoans particularly the black communities are forced to live off the accessible food that is near
them. The food deserts are in Austin, North Lawndale, Armour Square, Near South Side, Fuller Park,
Grand Boulevard, Washington Park, Woodlawn, West Lawn, Chicago Lawn, Englewood, Ashburn,

How Did Civilization Differ From Ancient Civilization
Throughout the centuries humans have greatly evolved. Originally nomadic tribes, people learned to
settle down and form civilizations due to the Neolithic Revolution. During this time humans learned
how to farm. This major discovery allowed us to create cities where we could rely on our own
supplies and labor for food rather than moving around to follow and hunt animals for food. For this
plan to work the people had to settle around the most ideal conditions for farming. Thus, most of the
successful ancient civilizations were formed around rivers. Ancient Egypt and Ancient India were two
of the greatest ancient civilizations and they relied on the rivers they were built around for a surplus of
food, trade, and cultural diffusion. The Nile River was the river ancient Egyptians centralized their
civilization around. This river valley provided many valuable resources to the Egyptians. One example
of this was the annual flooding of the river. According to World History Connections to Today,
Egyptians eagerly awaited the annual ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This ancient civilization is known today as the Indus valley. The civilians resided along the banks of
the Indus, Ganges, and Brahmaputra. These rivers carry melted snow from the Himalayan mountain
range to the cities allowing the people of the Indus Valley to farm. (Esler Pg. 52) These rivers gave the
people of the Indus valley access to the Persian Gulf allowing them to trade with people of that area.
This caused the spread of Buddhism as well as new ideas being brought back to the Indus Valley. One
example of this is the Indus people s connections to Sumer. According to the text, Contact with Sumer
may have stimulated Indus Valley people to develop their own system of writing. To sum up, the rivers
expanded the Indus Valley civilization by providing fertile soil and by increasing the civilization s

Aristotle s Duality Of Virtue Ethics
Aristotle s philosophy on virtue ethics involves the essence of what it means to be human, how to live
the most fulfilling and effective life, and how this affects one s responsibility to others. This theory is
applicable to virtually any profession, engineering included. As has been instilled in my perceptions
about my chosen career field since my first day at Texas A M University, engineering is far beyond the
intellect to do calculus and write computer code; engineering is making decisions that will affect
countless others and could even hold others life at stake. For this reason, Aristotle s duality of
intellectual and moral virtues deserves a more substantial introspective role in the engineering field.
Within Nichomachean ethics, Aristotle ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The reason for this non exhaustive list of qualities is that an engineer needs to be able to work and do
business with an array of people, and showing too much emotion or anger is generally unproductive
for the group and can lead to serious interpersonal issues. Engineers should actively work to find ways
to improve their skills, learning from all others, as well be humble enough to admit when somebody
else has a better idea than them. Lastly, engineers should have a personal drive, a personal telos, to
improve not only themselves but to improve society as a whole, be it via increasing the technological
knowledge and capabilities or by providing aid during a humanitarian crisis.
There is much that can be said of engineering in terms of Aristotle s theory of virtue ethics. Engineers
must strive to attain a high level of virtuosity in both the intellectual and moral categories, as
engineers can make decisions that affect the welfare and the very lives of those that use the products
of their labor. While Texas A M University does present many relevant virtues to its students in their
coursework, these are mostly intellectual virtues; moral virtues will have to come through practice in
each of our individual

Humpback Whale Definition
Rescuers on Sunday morning were planning to spare a child humpback whale that got stranded only
20 feet from West Seattle shore, yet endeavors fizzled and the youthful one died, reports say.
The 30 foot adolescent humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) was discovered caught in the
shallows close West Seattle s Fauntleroy Ferry dock in the small hours of the morning on August 7.
That day, several individuals rushed to the ship terminal and endeavored to help in protecting the
stranded creature, as indicated by a report from King5 News.
Tragically, endeavors were futile. A representative from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration (NOAA) says that the child humpback whale kicked the bucket hours after the fact.

Researchers have yet to decide the reason for the creature s demise, however tissue tests have been
taken. The youthful one s body was secured with whale lice, a sign of weakness, agents say.
Then, Huggins says authorities were unrealistic to choose whether to tow the well evolved creature to
somewhere else for a full necropsy or the tissue tests taken would suffice for an examination.
There are heaps of logistics required in doing an examination, says Huggins.
Barre says it is not exceptional to see humpback whales in Puget Sound on the grounds that the
populace has become in the course of recent years.
Indeed, even along these lines, NOAA s National Marine Fisheries Service suggests that a few
sections of the whale populace in the Northwest Pacific ought to be recorded as debilitated.
Barre says sightings of humpback whales have turned out to be less uncommon than they used to be,
however it is still unordinary to discover live whales get stranded.
In June, a 35 foot humpback whale was discovered dead in the Bremerton ship, yet a full necropsy did

Good And Evil In The Tell-Tale Heart
Some would say good and some would say evil, some would say that humans are both, unless forced

a footnote to this subject, I have since done some research and have learned that unpaid interns in a for
profit environment need to have an agreement in the beginning before the co op begins, as to the
conditions and obligations on both parts. Also regarding the start date, she was very last minute and
not very communicative. I had to track her down for the start date. Therefore, the form that I filled out
for the co op was not as complete as I would have liked it to be, but it was like pulling teeth. Also
important to note that getting the initial agreement back to Ramapo in time from Susan also required
several calls and emails from both myself and Eileen Quaglino. Future interns need to know that they
need to stay on top of Susan or Dave for Ramapo forms or anything else they might need. I had to

Argumentative Speech On Social Media
Mental health is one of the biggest rising health problems among teens and young adults but surely
this isn t down to social media, right? Wrong. With the rates of anxiety and depression increasing by
70% over the past 25 years and an increase from 10,500 to more than 17,500 girls aged 17 or under
being admitted to hospital due to self harm over the past decade but have rapidly increased in the last
5 years coinciding with the increased use of social media from young people. This sickening statistic
highlights the horrid emotions our younger generations feel, every like or retweet symbolising their
worth or attraction. In an article by the telegraph it was stated that over 27% of children who spend 3
or more hours on social media a day have symptoms of mental health issues compared to 12% of
children who spend no time on social media. Furthermore in an article published by the guardian Dr
Bernadka Dubicka chair of the Child and Adolescent Faculty at Royal College of Psychiatrists stated
that the use of social media is adding to a growing culture of sleep deprivation among young people
this also proving that social media isn t only affecting our children s mental health but their physical
health too.
Admit it you re guilty of marvelling over other people s relationships and comparing them to your
own but don t worry we all do it. Little do you know that your sneaky looks on Facebook could be
destroying your relationship. In an article by Forbes it was stated that 45% of millennial feel that the
increased use of social media has had a major impact on their relationships. Likewise in the same
article it was stated that a quarter of those surveyed felt that their spouse was more interested in their
phone when they were together, this showing that even date night is affected by the addictive antics of
social media. Elsewhere in a survey carried out for woman s health magazine showed that those who
logged onto social media site Facebook more times than the daily average are more likely to have
Facebook related conflicts and negative outcomes within their relationships. Similarly Russell Clayton

Temple Grandin Reflection
This film was based on a real person, Temple Grandin, who be diagnosed with autism when she was
four years old. Temple s mom worked very hard to teach her language, basic living and social skills;
and she be sent to schools to receive an education like other children. One of her high school teachers,
Dr. Carlock, not only taught Temple science knowledge, but also guided Temple to view herself more
positively. He taught Temple to view changes in her life as different doors, and all she needs to do is
go through. Temple kept using that measure when she faced challenges. Before she went to university,
Temple found out she like to work with animals in her aunt s farm. She also tried to use a machine,
which farmers used to calm cows, to help herself relax. Later, when she felt stressful in university, she
built a similar machine to calm herself. In order to keep and use that machine in her room, Temple
created her own science experiment which proved that her machine could benefit other people. She
also made friend with her roommate. After graduated from university, Temple continued to engage in
animal research. She completed her master degree, and designed facilities for feedlots and
slaughterhouses. When she visited national meeting with her mom in 1981, Temple made public
speech and shared her personal experiences with others. The story in this film goes through the end of
the asylum era (between the 1870s to the 1960s), and parts of the post asylum era in history (2). In the

Importance Of A Career In Nursing
Mastering and understanding the body s response to diet and exercise intrigued me. Being
knowledgeable in promoting a high quality of life and optimum health appealed to me. Studying the
art and science of human anatomy and movement interested me, which resulted in choosing nursing as
my career. For me to be a successful nurse, it is vital that I complete a nursing program. USF would be
great for me because I am a dedicated achiever of my goals, and will finish your program with an
open mind and a driven spirit. A career in nursing would be my way of giving back to my community
and those that have supported me along my educational journey. People I have crossed paths with didn
t expect much from me as a student because of my upbringing. I come from a split family home in
Compton, California and I have learned to overcome adversity and treat obstacles as a stepping stone,
leading me to my greater purpose. I am not afraid to make mistakes, as I have learned that this is the
greatest opportunity for growth. I believe that hard work and a good attitude could get me far in this
field and I am willing to take on the challenge of continuing my higher education, as it would be an
honor to do so in your program.
My experiences from volunteering and shadowing health professionals has taught me a great deal
about professionalism in the field. I observed my grandmother at an early age, assist patients in the

parts of the telecommunications world. * The company has covered the entire Indian nation with its

Weaknesses
* An often cited original weakness is that when the business was started by Sunil Bharti Mittal over 15
years ago, the business has little knowledge and experience of how a cellular telephone system

recently Airtel did not own its own towers, which was a particular strength of some of its competitors
such as Hutchison Essar. Towers are important if your company wishes to provide wide coverage
nationally. * The fact that the Airtel has not pulled off a deal with South Africa s MTN could signal
the lack of any real emerging market investment opportunity for the business once the Indian market
has become mature.

The World is Flat -Chapters 7 8 Essay example
The Right Stuff
Constant change and a flat, global competitive market landscape were described by Thomas Friedman,
author of The World is Flat, as triple convergence and was a result of the ten flatteners. Friedman also
stated that in Globalization 1.0, countries had to think globally. In Globalization 2.0, companies had to
think globally to thrive, or at least survive. In Globalization 3.0, individuals have to think globally to
thrive, or at least survive. (Friedman, 2007) The concept of needing individuals to think globally and
thrive in the market led Friedman to travel and report on various educational cultures across the world.

The first ability required in the right stuff is learning how to learn. Friedman discussed the ability to
learn as constant absorption, and self teaching techniques that manifest crystallized intelligence and
enhance the ability of the individual to new innovation. (Friedman, 2007) Life learning is essential to
being competitive individually in the new flat world. Individuals that love learning and are motivated
to search for data or self learn will be stewards of their own compounding education. (Friedman,
2007)
Navigation, is the second required critical skill set outlined by Friedman s right stuff theory.
Information sourcing is readily available on the web. As internet availability has increased social
thinking that the source of data that flattens the world is credible and factual. However, students and
individuals need to remember that filtering of open source information is critical to understanding the
difference between information, facts and wisdom. (Friedman, 2007) The youth of the future will need
to be able to discern the difference between information and carry forward credible information and
spin it into a new innovation.
Passion and curiosity is a third ability or personality quotient of the right stuff noted by Friedman is
created by culture and an individual s innate desire to improve or self actualize. Passion and the

Itp Research Paper
What is ITP? ITP stands for Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura which is a scientific way of saying
the body has an abnormally low number of platelets. These platelets are cells in the blood that help
blood clot. When these cells are present in low numbers excessive bleeding and bruising often occur.
A common symptom is red blotches on the skin that do not blanch. These spots are caused by bleeding
underneath the skin. ITP affects both adults and children. In children, it is normally a temporary
condition. In adults, the condition is often chronic. A diagnosis of ITP is a process of exclusion as
similar symptoms appear in a range of other conditions including HIV and lupus. Once these
conditions are ruled out, treatment begins. The first step to any sort of treatment is to speak with a
physician. Only a doctor is able to diagnose ITP and specialists often work for years or decades to
treat conditions such as ITP. As the condition is often chronic in adults and potentially life threatening,
the most important step to recovery is to see a physician. What is Traditional Chinese Medicine? ...

The Importance Of Oral Communication
I remember your son[ s] graduation / That s when I met your friends / And they was all havin
conversation / But they was sayin stuff that I couldn t understand / Then all of a sudden it felt like, I
understood something I missed my whole life / For the first time I was wearin your shoes / For the
first time I was hearin your views / I never knew how complicated life is when you feel so isolated /
And I know we don t speak much / Cause when talking got hard all I ever did was throw the peace up
/ My big sister Grace, I m sorry I never learned to sign / And even though you were born deaf / I pray
you forgive me for the years I lived blind These lyrics from the song Hear My Heart by rapper Andy
Mineo were written as an apology to his deaf sister Grace. He wrote this song that would serve two
purposes: as a public apology to Grace for never learning how to communicate with her and as well as
to bring awareness to a culturally neglected community. Andy Mineo was communicating the idea of
restoration and hope which was spreading life to others and likewise we should use our words to
encourage and upift. Oral communication is very important and essential in an age that is heavily
inundated with electronics and technology. Everyday we use our mouths, body or some sort of gesture
to express our feelings or thoughts. Today I d like to examine how certain words stimulate our brain in
different ways, how technology can remove the significance of spoken words, and how we can

Contemporary Issues
Contemporary Issues This paper will discuss a contemporary health issue and its potential impact on
the nursing profession. As the nursing profession continues to grow, society has begun to see a
decrease in the number of nurses in the profession. According to NursingWorld (2005) The nation s
hospitals have 126,000 vacancies for nursing professions. In addition, 75 percent of all hospitals
vacancies are for nurses. Currently Registered Nurses are at the top of the list of occupations with
projected job growth. So why are so many nurses leaving the profession resulting in a shortage? Is
America truly experiencing a nursing shortage or are nurses just better educated, resulting in
additional responsibilities? Today most ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

How to Reduce Teenage Pregnancy in America A nightmare can strike, even when the eyes of it s
victims are wide open. It can be unexpected, terrifying, a nightmare to see the dreaded two lines on the
test especially as a teenager. Even if teenagers are old enough to decide whether or not they want to
engage in sexual intercourse, the rate of teenage pregnancy should be reduced as much as possible.
Teenage pregnancy is not only expensive, but also puts the lives of the mother and child in danger.
Teenage pregnancy is not a new concept, having been around since the dawn of humanity. Most
humans, at a certain point, will hit a stage in life called puberty. During this time, ... Show more

Not only that, but teens who are in a less favorable economic situation, or are on welfare, are more
likely to become pregnant than girls who are not. (About Teen Pregnancy). Those statistics are not
very promising, especially when babies are being born to girls on welfare or governmental assistance.
(Teen Birth Rates) When a baby is born, it is a priority that said baby is healthy and happy. It is also
important that the mother takes care of herself and the baby before it arrives, including taking
vitamins, going to checkups, and eating healthy. It s not easy, but teenage pregnancy is much more
risky than adult pregnancy. Pregnant teens and their babies are at a higher risk than adult mothers and
their babies, risks including high blood pressure, preeclampsia, premature birth, postpartum
depression, and low birth weights (Teenage Pregnancy: Medical). However, this is not always the
case. ...not every baby born to a teen mother will have health problems but the risks are definitely
higher. (Beirne, Dr.) Medical risks such as the ones listed can be very dangerous, to both the mother
and the child. Children born to teenage mothers are not only at risk for medical reasons, but for
educational reasons. These children are, more often than not, usually less ready for school than
children born to older mothers, lacking childhood development skills such as social,

The Prestige Analysis
The Prestige Analysis
The Prestige is a film adaptation of the Christopher Priest novel bearing the same name. The story is
set in the turn of the century London about two stage magicians, their rivalry, and their obsession to be
the best with the artistry and secrecy of illusion. The analysis of The Prestige will examine several
aspects of the film including plot, character development, use of sound, use of photography, set
design, lighting, and role of the collaborators. Each of these areas is important to create the emotion,
suspense, and energy for a successful and entertaining film.
The Plot
The filmmakers introduce a man who designs the equipment to pull off the illusions. The magic of a
successful illusion consists of three ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Other key characters include Mr. Cutter, Sarah Borden, and Olivia Wenscombe. Mr. Cutter, the
engineer that designs the mechanical devices used for the illusions, tells the story leading up to the
death of Mr. Angier and Mr. Borden. Sarah Borden, Alfred Borden s wife, displays confusion over the
on again, off again love received by Mr. Borden. Throughout the film, she expresses this confusion by
telling Alfred, Today, it s true, or Today, you don t mean it (Nolan, Ryder, and Thomas). She believes
on some days, his love of magic is greater than his love for her. Olivia Wenscombe, Mr. Angier s
assistant and later Mr. Borden s mistress, represented a woman who loved the attention of the stage.
Her outgoing personality embodied through her clothing and her dialogue.
The Use of Sound
Even though the film is essentially a visual experience, the use of sound has become extremely
important in modern film. The modern viewer hears a complicated soundtrack that is as meaningful as
the image on the screen. Three elements comprise the film s soundtrack: the dialogue, the sound
effects, and the musical score. The proper balance and mix of these elements produced the essential
emphasis required, which created the desired effects. As explained by Joseph Boggs and Dennis
Petrie,
Because we are more consciously aware of what we see than what we hear, we generally accept the
soundtrack without much thought, responding intuitively to the

First Generation Student Essay
First generation students can easily blend in with all other college groups, but can be distinguished by
them self disclosing, on a check box or drop down menu, during the application process. A first
generation student is one who is the first in their family to attend a four year university in pursuit of a
bachelor s degree. This particular group of students lacks Precollege preparation, study skills, and
major exploration, to name a few. They also suffer from a phenomenon known as the Imposter
Phenomenon, which states it is a feeling the students receive that is far beyond not fitting in, but
thoughts so deep that the students feel they do not deserve to be at the institution and the experience
should have gone to someone else (Davis, p. 49). Thoughts of having to meet with a professor face to
face instills fear in many first generation students and it takes time for them to gain courage to
approach office hours and build awareness of multiple resources the campuses have to offer, in which
they can take advantage of (Davis, p. 52). Community Colleges have been increasing the number of
students and the fastest growing population is that of first generation students. California Community
Colleges Chancellor s Office reports that first generation student population is slightly above 40% and
on the rise. A community college is the perfect place to offer the group sessions I have put together
due to the large number of students I can target. The group will serve students who

Analysis Of The Accidental Billionaires By Aaron...
The Social Network reveals an ironic story of a computer genius who creates a global social
networking website that now benefits over 5 million users, while he is alone in the end because of his
cynical, unsympathetic and egocentric personality and behavior. The Social Network is a compelling
movie and the movie makers had done a magnificent job using sophisticated cinematography, editing,
sound and lighting techniques to attract their audience s attention and affection throughout the whole
movie. In addition, they clearly appealed to pathos, ethos and logos to persuade their audience to
perceive Mark Zuckerberg s negative personality traits. The film is directed by David Fincher, and the
screenplay is written by Aaron Sorkin and adapted from The Accidental Billionaires written by Ben
Mezrich. The story portrays the creation of Facebook by the founder, Mark Zuckerberg, in his early
twenties, and begins when he was the sophomore at Harvard University.
In October 2003, after Zuckerberg broke up with his girlfriend, Erica Albright, he was so angry and
created a website known as Facemash to allow male viewers to rate female students based on their
attractiveness. The university s network was crashed due to an enormous amount of traffic to the site,
and Zuckerberg was penalized because of his willful misconduct. The popularity of his Facemash
appealed to his schoolmates, Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, and Divya Narendra to engage him for
programing their ideas of Harvard

United States Marine Corps ( Usmc ) Base Of Military Bases...
Jacksonville, North Carolina, and the surrounding area is full of military bases. The biggest base is a
United States Marine Corps (USMC) base called Camp Lejeune. Some of the other bases: Air Station
New River (USMC), Camp Geiger (USMC), Air Station Cherry Point, smaller adjacent posts, and
reserve stations (Google, n.d.). Every military personal that separates from their given branch is
required to turn in their individual issue gear. Camp Lejeune s Consolidated Issue Facility (CIF) states
Dirty, cracked, missing or broken gear is the last thing on the mind of a Marine returning from Iraq
(Muth, 2006). This can be a challenging thing for Marines to accomplish the CIF department at
Lejeune explains just one of the challenges that they face The only thing about cleaning the gear is
that Marines are taking the flak jackets apart and drying them in a dryer. The problem with that is that
the outer shell will shrink so it s harder to get the SAPI (Small Arms Protective Inserts) plates back
into them. If you wash it you have to let the outer shell air dry (Muth, 2006). This causes an extra
amount of stress while trying to transition out of the military. The gear has to be clean, undamaged and
the correct generation that the service member was issued. A private origination that is dedicated to
helping with the military to civilian transition is USMC IIF they warn Again there is no reason to have
dirty gear. Take your time and take care of business. I know we all want to go

Marketing Theories Applied, And Calculations Essay
Marketing Theories Applied, and Calculations Return on Investment with Social Media Marketing
While these mobile opportunities were enticing, Ms. Bornstein still had to make a business case to
Suliteanu. It would be necessary to define key metrics to measure the success of social media, video,
and mobile for 2011 and beyond, as part of her long term strategy for Sephora s online media
spending. To measure its return on investment, Ms. Bornstein reviewed a Third Party Social Media
Evaluation Framework (Ofek Wagonfield, 2012, Exhibit 14). Using this framework, Ms. Bornstein
could measure the current investments Sephora was making in its social media and make three key
arguments in her proposal. First, Sephora successfully generated a wide range of interactions with its
social media (See Appendix, Exhibit 1). According to the third party, consumers could be sorted into
three categories based on their levels of engagement: Advocates, Followers, and Searchers. Using a
conversion rate, Sephora can see clearly that its social media participants turned into buyers. Ms.
Bornstein must direct her attention to these metrics as they provide the most straight forward return on
investment numbers for Sephora s social media outlet. Second, Ms. Bornstein already knows the value
of its Facebook followers. Sephora entered the Facebook scene in 2008 by creating a Facebook Fan
Page. By 2009, it had 300,000 followers and by September 2010, it had 812,000. Based on the

Analysis Of We Real Cool
We Real Cool, by Gwendolyn Brooks is a lyrical poem that tells a story of teenage rebellion. Although
the poem is relatively short, it packs an extremely powerful message about youth. Gwendolyn Brooks
centered her works predominately around the African American consciousness. During the time in
which the poem was written, many teens, especially young African American men felt misunderstood
and like the world was set up for them to fail. At first glance, it appears this poem is a mere
description of misunderstood young adults who are enjoying their youth. However, with further
analysis, it is made clear that this poem talks about much more than that. While it is obvious that this
poem is about rebellious youths, it is also about self identity and the dangers of herd mentality. Herd
mentality describes how people follow and adapt the behaviors of certain groups. Herd mentality is in
no way new; moreover, most people are subject to its effects. However, herd mentality becomes
dangerous when a group has enough influence to dictate an individual s way of thinking. When an
individual is desperate to find a place to belong, they will most likely follow the crowd even if they
know that they are participating in something immoral; this can be seen in We Real Cool.
In the opening lines of the poem, the reader is introduced to the subjects The Pool Players. Seven at
the Golden Shovel (line 1 2), they are the we in the poem. It becomes apparent to the reader that the
speaker is one of the seven pool players mentioned.
The speakers tone in the poem is very prideful and defiant, but at the same time, it is filled with
uncertainty. This poem is a formal verse ballad which uses simple sentences that have a steady meter
that gives the poem a jazz like quality to the poem which further emphasizes the speaker s nonchalant
attitude and their disdain for the establishment.
The speaker contempt for the system is shown in the line We real cool. We Left school. (line3 4) The
speaker feels misunderstood by society and yearns to find a place for themselves in the world. The
danger in this is that the speaker of a poem gives up on conventional means of education in search for
a place where they can belong, which

  • 2. Immanuel Kant Research Paper Immanuel Kant was born April 22, 1724 in Konigsberg.Immanuel Kant, a German philosopher best known for his work The Critique of Pure Reason, was one of the first to describe this era with the word Enlightenment. (Ellis 183 184). He attended the collegium Fridericianum at the age of eight, Latin school that taught primarily classicism. (Immanuel Kant Biography). Immanuel Kant went to the University of Konigsberg, or also know as Albertina. Kant was born into an artisan family. His father was a harness marker and a pietist. Pietism is the stress on the emotional and personal aspects of religion. His mother s father was also a master harness maker, and she was better educated that the other women. When Immanuel Kant was finished with college he became a private tutor for children outside Konigsberg. He was a private tutor for six years, then later became a teacher at Albertina. He would stay at Albertina for four decades and teach philosophy. He retired from teach in 1796, which ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The effects of his metaphysics, epistemology ,ethics and aesthetics was important to the philosophical movement that followed him.( Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy. ). A large part of Immanuel Kant s work came from the question, what can we know . Kant thought that if it can be stated simply, and our knowledge is constrained to mathematics and the science of the natural, empirical word. There were two major methods in the early modern time of philosophy that had a major impact on Immanuel Kant. The first one was Empiricism. Empiricism is the theory that all knowledge is derived from sense experience. The second method was Rationalism. Rationalism is a theory that opinions and actions should be based on reason and knowledge rather than religious belief or emotional response. Kant believed that both of the theories of the philosophers arguments had some flaws to them. ( Internet Encyclopedia of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Essay on Art Formal Analysis Art Formal Analysis Examining the formal qualities of Homer Watson s painting Horse and Rider In A Landscape was quite interesting. I chose to analyze this piece as apposed to the others because it was the piece I liked the least, therefore making me analyze it more closely and discover other aspects of the work, besides aesthetics. The texture of the canvas works very well with the subject matter portrayed in the painting. The grassy hill side and the leaves of the trees are especially complimented by the canvas. It makes the leaves feel like they are slightly moving, this combined with the lack of detail itself the leaves. This is contrasted nicely with the very detailed renderings of the trunks and branches of the trees, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Perspective lines occur also in the background of the painting in the upper right in the trees getting smaller as they descend into the painting. This painting is an example of linear perspective. All lines converge at a vanishing point. At first sight the house in the middle ground appears to be the destination of the rider, but the use of linear perspective suggests that something else is important beyond the house and the green hill. This painting appears to take place either at either dusk or dawn, when the sun is at the horizon. Likely it is dusk, as the setting appears to be in the Northern Hemisphere and the snow in the picture residing on the left hand side of fence would suggest it has yet to melt, so the sun would be setting in the west, or on the right. So the viewer, as well as the subject, is facing south. This affects the painting in several ways. The lighting is very dramatic, the middle ground being very much more lighted than the foreground and background, therefore the colors are more saturated than the foreground and background. Greens, browns and greys are used a lot in this piece and makes it very muddy. The house really does stand out against the painting because of the contrast of lighting. The piece is pretty balanced, it is more or less partitioned into four parts by the strong horizontal line in the middle and the road meeting with the edge of the forest vertically, the lighter areas in the top right and bottom left, ... LABOR RELATIONS Thirty one years ago, when President Ronald Reagan threatened to fire approximately 13,000 air traffic controllers unless they called off an illegal strike, the president not only transformed his presidency, but also shaped the labor relations in the United States. The Professional Air Traffic Controllers Organization (PATCO) strike of August 3. 1981 was a remarkable day in the history of this country. Under the direction of union president, Robert E. Poli, 14,500 members declared a nationwide strike. Approximately 11,500 members walked off their jobs because of contract disputes with the Federal Aviation ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It won an order directing that the stoppage be ended and that controllers return to work. The FAA won similar orders in Minnesota and Alaska (Northrup 169). As a direct result, the FAA fired fifty two controllers, of whom forty six were later reinstated to their positions. The FAA also suspended nearly on thousand more controllers for a short period of time. As a result of the strike, Bailey s tenure as executive director of PATCO came to an end when his position was abolished. Subsequently, John F. Leyden was chosen as president, a position that he held for the next ten years. In addition, Assistant Secretary of Labor W. J. Usery disqualified PATCO as a bargaining agent for 126 days. The union was later reinstated by Usery and it won exclusive bargaining rights election in 1972. In July and August of 1976 tensions ran high again after the Civil Service Commissioner declined to reclassified controllers to a higher salary grade. The result was that PATCO staged slowdowns for five days at the nation s busiest airports. Its tactics proved successful when on January 13, 1977, the Commission reversed itself and increased controllers wages (Northrup 170). In preparations for subsequent strikes, in 1977 PATCO established a strike fund known as the National Controller Subsistence Fund. 15 percent of the membership dues were ... • 5. Criminology Theories And Social Bond Theory Theories of Criminology Fall Term Paper: An Overview of Criminology Theories and Theorists The theory of Travis Hirschi, which is the social bond theory focuses on the concept of the causes and the acts of delinquency, which is what this theory is extracted from. This theory emerges when an individual s bonds to the society and the community around them are weak or broken (Topak, 2017). The social bond theory can be described as the belief that socialization and personal relationships are significant aspects of human development, which keep individuals from committing crimes (Topak, 2017). The social bond theory is composed of four key components which are the following: attachment, commitment, involvement, and beliefs (Topak, 2017). In ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This can then lead to individuals wanting to seek gratification, through crime (Topak, 2017). In this essay, three theories will be compared and contrasted, which are Robert Merton s theory of crime, Emile Durkheim s theory, and the classical criminal theory. These will be compared through the use of the nature and characteristics of criminals, the causes of crimes in each of the theories, and the policy suggestions, which aides to identify the similarities and differences between each theorists and their given theories. First and foremost, Robert Merton s theory of crime is based upon the concepts of strain and delinquency in individuals, especially individuals who are related to gangs and gang violence (Topak, 2017). Merton states that the individuals that do partake in criminal activity are committing these acts due to the communal strain placed upon them, in order to live up to expectations, achieve goals, and gain respect and a status within the society (Topak, 2017). Also, there is an expectation to be successful in politically reasonable and acquisitive goals (Topak, 2017). The characteristics and behavior of a criminal in Merton s respective views would be an individual who possesses qualities such as the following: an individual who results in choosing an alternative lifestyle that does not conform to society s norms and alternative sets of values. • 8. Comparison between Afternoons and An Arundel Tomb Comparison between Afternoons and An Arundel Tomb Both of Larkin s poems explore the loss of identity however they do so in different contexts. Afternoons depicts the continuation of life and subsequent passing of time through illustration of changing roles from a relatively carefree character to a young mother who must fully adopt this new identity and the life changes the title entails. The leaves fall in ones and twos is representative of the gradual nature of this changing identity which contrasts to the relatively significant transition the young mother experiences. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Alternatively Afternoons immediately begins with the pessimistic sentence summer is fading which firstly depicts the somewhat saddening time as the positivity commonly associated with the warm season starts to disappear and head towards a darker time. This can be interpreted to represent the vanishing love between husband and wife as the lovers change to husbands in skilled trades and young mothers which suggests the arrival of children to be burdening or disliked which is true to Larkin s somewhat pessimistic style. Behind them and Before them are featured at the beginning and the end of the second stanza, implying a sense of entrapment experienced by the mothers as they re unable to escape the mundane, domestic situation they now find themselves in therefore relating to the empty image illustrated by the hollows of afternoons Larkin also comments on the future in the final stanza s of both poems. In An Arundel Tomb what will survive us all is love implies that as long as the tomb endures then so with the couple s love subsequently keeping them alive in people s minds. In contrast to this optimism unusual for Larkin the quote may also suggest that the effigies are just that, there is no immortality provided by eternal love as they ve still died and this predicament is a ... The stories are passed down from generations and teach valuable lessons in extraordinary ways. In fact, most fairy tales began with oral storytelling. However, The Grimm Brothers made multiple editions of tales that they claimed as their own. With over 200 fairy tales, not all of their stories gained the same amount of popularity. Their more prominent stories, such as Cinderella and Snow White, create a sense of whimsy with talking animals and love. Grimm stories usually contain the standard characters of a fairy tale. In a normal fairy tale, the characters include the fool, the fairy, the wicked crone, the charming prince, and the beautiful damsel (Heckel). While not all of these characters are always included, most stories contain some combination of them. These characters help make the iconic setup that makes the story popular. For instance, the famous fairy tale Snow White shows off a wicked crone, a charming prince, and the beautiful damsel. Snow White escapes her evil queen mother and ends up with her prince ( Snow White ). In Snow White, the ideal structure is in place; everything comes together and it has a joyful ending. However, in The Robber Bridegroom, there is no charming prince or a standard wicked crone ( The Robber ). The daughter is left to defend herself against the suitor and she does not end up with love. The archetypal characters are not only missing, but the standard theme of love is not present anywhere within the story. • 11. The Uncertainty Of Illness Theory Introduction Mishel s Uncertainty in Illness Theory is a mid range theory, created using a bi directional process where the theory informed and was informed by research. The theory looks at how uncertainty is capable of influencing a patient s ability to become accustomed to their sickness and the outcome of it. People faced with uncertainty may not know what the outcome of their illness will be or they may be living with the possibility that their illness will come back. Either way, the theory examines how people progress and change while dealing with uncertainty. Summary of Theory Uncertainty as it pertains to illness, is defined as the inability to determine the meaning of illness related events, occurring when the decision maker is unable to assign definite value to objects or events, or is unable to predict outcomes accurately (Alligood, 2014). The uncertainty in illness theory examines how people adapt when they are faced with the uncertainty of illness. The theory considers patients facing an illness and how the uncertainty they are facing can cognitively be negative or positive. Depending on the patient s perspective of the situation is the way the patient will cope and adapt. A patient with an illness, such as cancer, can be highly stressed by the uncertainty of the events and treatment to take place, which could lead to anxiety, depression, and hopelessness. On the other hand, a patient who has received a poor prognosis may find hope in the uncertainty, the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Foreshadowing In A Prayer For Owen Meany A Prayer for Owen Meany, a tragedy John Irving s A Prayer for Owen Meany tells the tragic tale of Owen Meany, a peculiarly small boy through the eyes of his friend and classmate John Wheelwright. John Irving creates a tragic effect through his use of third person narration, foreshadowing, and symbolism. A Prayer for Owen Meany is told from Owen s best friend s point of view, John Wheelwright, however the novel revolves around Owen. The book opens with John introducing Owen as someone who greatly impacted him, and saying I am a Christian because of Owen Meany (1). This opening makes it clear that the narrator is writing this book because of Owen Meany and that the story is centered around Owen. Throughout the book John idolizes and idealizes ... Owen follows the Vietnam war and remembers everything about it. In high school Owen is The Voice of the school newspaper and through his participation in The Voice he expresses his ideas about the failures of America and comments on other issues as well. Since Owen s ideas and commentary are cited as The Voice, he is detached from who he is and he comes off as important and knowing, showing how he symbolizes American ideals. The Voice is in line with American ideals because The Voice is always calling out Gravesend Academy, which isn t egalitarian, and being egalitarian is a fundamental American belief. For example, The Voice calls out the school for using a shrink for those with learning difficulties IT SEEMS TO ME THAT PEOPLE WHO DON T LEARN AS EASILY AS OTHERS SUFFER FROM A KIND OF LEARNING DISABILIY...WHAT DOES A SHRINK HAVE TO DO WITH THAT PROCCESS? His motives could be described as being very similar to those of Charles Manson. His cunning use of words along with his ability to relate to the other characters allow him to set up a trap for them that ultimately leads them to do evil things. Iago is the most evil of all considerable villans because of his lack of reasoning, which makes him an unresolvable villan. • 14. The Education Of High School Students Essay Introduction In today s education of high school students, are we keeping up with the 21st century, or, are we still doing the same old thing? The British started the idea of traditional schools hundreds of years ago. After the American Revolution around the late 1700 s, and the early 1800 s, government supported schools started. These schools educated students of all ages in one room with one teacher. These schools were not free. In the late 1800 s, high schools were considered to be preparatory academies for students who were going to attend college. In the early 1900 s, the same schools were transformed into core elements now preparing students for work after high school. By the middle 1900 s, states required students to attend school from the ages of 8 14 and to complete elementary school. They also switched their emphasis back to prepare students for the growing state and private universities. In 2001, the United States entered its current era of education accountability/reform with the institution of the No Child Left Behind law. The Every Child Succeeds Act has replaced No Child Left Behind. The 21st century calls for a higher order of skills, abilities, and learning dispositions that society and workplaces are expecting and demanding. Employers want deeper learning, analytic reasoning, complex problem solving, teamwork, and experience in career fields. I think you can agree that our technology is fantastic. • 15. The Journey Of Aeneas From Virgil s Aeneid And The... At a first glance, the journeys of Aeneas from Virgil s Aeneid and Saint Augustine in his autobiography The Confessions, do not seem to have much in common. In Confessions, Augustine embarks on a spiritual journey, while Aeneas endures a physical one. After closely reading both texts, readers can see the powerful, striking connection between Saint Augustine s journey and Aeneas . The Confessions serves as a personal inspiration to readers by showcasing Augustine s journey towards God, and His presence throughout that journey. Aeneas ability to overcome hardships because of his belief in the gods and divine grace, is closely related to Augustine s ability to be exposed to God s mercy and companionship, even when he did not have faith in Him, because of the notion instilled in him by God. Divine Providence is evident in both The Aeneid and The Confessions through examples such as, characters enduring storms as a result of the gods, or dreams confirming that God is in complete control of the world. Although Augustine has strayed from God, God remains with him. Throughout The Aeneid, Aeneas showcases divine grace, divine Providence, and self sacrifice, which makes him relate more closely with Augustine s journey of life than the one written by Virgil. Divine grace can be defined as the divine influence within humans, which inspires them to resist temptation and endure tribulations. It also signifies the reawakening of people to God. • 16. Types Of Binary Fission Decay 1) Describe the difference between: autotrophs, heterotrophs, chemotrophs, and phototrophs. Autotrophs are organisms that can synthesize their own energy supply out of inorganic matter, such as light or chemicals Heterotrophs are organisms that cannot synthesize their own energy, so they receive their energy by consuming organic matter, such as plants or animals. Chemotrophs are organisms that acquire energy an oxidation reduction reaction of organic or inorganic chemicals; this meaning the electron donors of that environment have become oxidized. Phototrophs are organisms that solely use light as the energy source to produce nutrients, such as the process of photosynthesis. 2) Describe purpose and steps of binary fission. Also, explain how binary fission is described mathematically and graphically and identify the two interchangeable terms used to describe this growth. Binary fission is the process in which a cell grows twice its normal size, and then the cell divides in half to produce two daughter cells. This process is carried out by unicellular organisms because it is their only way of reproduction. The cell begins this process by replicating the cell s DNA, and the duplicated chromosomes attach to the cytoplasmic membrane or microtubules. Once attached, these attachment sites push the chromosomes apart to expand the entire cell body. The cell now produces a new cytoplasmic membrane, and along the mid line of the cell a septum begins to form. Upon completion of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 23. Food Deserts in Chicago Background Healthy eating is vital to eliminating sickness and diseases in one s life. Many people suffer from diabetes, obesity, heart conditions, and high blood pressure because of improper eating habits. To a degree, most of these eating habits are related to limited access to produce healthy foods. The increasing amount of food deserts and lack of family income contributes to African American obesity rates, and lack of healthy choices. Ironically, these food desserts reside in communities plagued by poverty. These income restrictions also add to the problems that are part of being in a food desert. Literature Review Mari Gallagher(2006). Examining the Impact of Food Deserts on Public Health in Chicago Food deserts are places where healthy foods are not produced nor sold. Unfortunately, Chicago is filled with food deserts. Approximately 600,000 people reside in areas that consist of food deserts (Gallagher, 2006). Nearly 200,000 of those people are children. These children do not have the opportunity for healthier options, which shows an increase in obesity rates (News One Staff, 2011). There are 77 Chicago communities and out of that 77, 23 are food deserts (Gallagher, 2006). Chicagoans particularly the black communities are forced to live off the accessible food that is near them. • 24. How Did Civilization Differ From Ancient Civilization Throughout the centuries humans have greatly evolved. Originally nomadic tribes, people learned to settle down and form civilizations due to the Neolithic Revolution. During this time humans learned how to farm. This major discovery allowed us to create cities where we could rely on our own supplies and labor for food rather than moving around to follow and hunt animals for food. For this plan to work the people had to settle around the most ideal conditions for farming. Thus, most of the successful ancient civilizations were formed around rivers. Ancient Egypt and Ancient India were two of the greatest ancient civilizations and they relied on the rivers they were built around for a surplus of food, trade, and cultural diffusion. The Nile River was the river ancient Egyptians centralized their civilization around. This river valley provided many valuable resources to the Egyptians. Aristotle s Duality Of Virtue Ethics Aristotle s philosophy on virtue ethics involves the essence of what it means to be human, how to live the most fulfilling and effective life, and how this affects one s responsibility to others. This theory is applicable to virtually any profession, engineering included. As has been instilled in my perceptions about my chosen career field since my first day at Texas A M University, engineering is far beyond the intellect to do calculus and write computer code; engineering is making decisions that will affect countless others and could even hold others life at stake. For this reason, Aristotle s duality of intellectual and moral virtues deserves a more substantial introspective role in the engineering field. Within Nichomachean ethics, Aristotle ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The reason for this non exhaustive list of qualities is that an engineer needs to be able to work and do business with an array of people, and showing too much emotion or anger is generally unproductive for the group and can lead to serious interpersonal issues. Engineers should actively work to find ways to improve their skills, learning from all others, as well be humble enough to admit when somebody else has a better idea than them. Lastly, engineers should have a personal drive, a personal telos, to improve not only themselves but to improve society as a whole, be it via increasing the technological knowledge and capabilities or by providing aid during a humanitarian crisis. There is much that can be said of engineering in terms of Aristotle s theory of virtue ethics. Engineers must strive to attain a high level of virtuosity in both the intellectual and moral categories, as engineers can make decisions that affect the welfare and the very lives of those that use the products of their labor. While Texas A M University does present many relevant virtues to its students in their coursework, these are mostly intellectual virtues; moral virtues will have to come through practice in each of our individual ... First Generation Student Essay First generation students can easily blend in with all other college groups, but can be distinguished by them self disclosing, on a check box or drop down menu, during the application process. A first generation student is one who is the first in their family to attend a four year university in pursuit of a bachelor s degree. This particular group of students lacks Precollege preparation, study skills, and major exploration, to name a few. They also suffer from a phenomenon known as the Imposter Phenomenon, which states it is a feeling the students receive that is far beyond not fitting in, but thoughts so deep that the students feel they do not deserve to be at the institution and the experience should have gone to someone else (Davis, p. 49). Thoughts of having to meet with a professor face to face instills fear in many first generation students and it takes time for them to gain courage to approach office hours and build awareness of multiple resources the campuses have to offer, in which they can take advantage of (Davis, p. 52). Marketing Theories Applied, And Calculations Essay Marketing Theories Applied, and Calculations Return on Investment with Social Media Marketing While these mobile opportunities were enticing, Ms. Bornstein still had to make a business case to Suliteanu. It would be necessary to define key metrics to measure the success of social media, video, and mobile for 2011 and beyond, as part of her long term strategy for Sephora s online media spending. To measure its return on investment, Ms. Bornstein reviewed a Third Party Social Media Evaluation Framework (Ofek Wagonfield, 2012, Exhibit 14). Using this framework, Ms. Bornstein could measure the current investments Sephora was making in its social media and make three key arguments in her proposal. First, Sephora successfully generated a wide range of interactions with its social media (See Appendix, Exhibit 1). According to the third party, consumers could be sorted into three categories based on their levels of engagement: Advocates, Followers, and Searchers. Using a conversion rate, Sephora can see clearly that its social media participants turned into buyers. Ms. Bornstein must direct her attention to these metrics as they provide the most straight forward return on investment numbers for Sephora s social media outlet. • 52. Analysis Of We Real Cool We Real Cool, by Gwendolyn Brooks is a lyrical poem that tells a story of teenage rebellion. Although the poem is relatively short, it packs an extremely powerful message about youth. Gwendolyn Brooks centered her works predominately around the African American consciousness. During the time in which the poem was written, many teens, especially young African American men felt misunderstood and like the world was set up for them to fail. At first glance, it appears this poem is a mere description of misunderstood young adults who are enjoying their youth. However, with further analysis, it is made clear that this poem talks about much more than that. While it is obvious that this poem is about rebellious youths, it is also about self identity and the dangers of herd mentality. Herd mentality describes how people follow and adapt the behaviors of certain groups. Herd mentality is in no way new; moreover, most people are subject to its effects. However, herd mentality becomes dangerous when a group has enough influence to dictate an individual s way of thinking. When an individual is desperate to find a place to belong, they will most likely follow the crowd even if they know that they are participating in something immoral; this can be seen in We Real Cool. In the opening lines of the poem, the reader is introduced to the subjects The Pool Players. Seven at the Golden Shovel (line 1 2), they are the we in the poem. It becomes apparent to the reader that the speaker is one of the seven pool players mentioned. The speakers tone in the poem is very prideful and defiant, but at the same time, it is filled with uncertainty. This poem is a formal verse ballad which uses simple sentences that have a steady meter that gives the poem a jazz like quality to the poem which further emphasizes the speaker s nonchalant attitude and their disdain for the establishment. The speaker contempt for the system is shown in the line We real cool. We Left school. (line3 4) The speaker feels misunderstood by society and yearns to find a place for themselves in the world. The danger in this is that the speaker of a poem gives up on conventional means of education in search for a place where they can belong, which ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
