This document provides an overview of nickel-based superalloys, including their processing, microstructure, properties, and applications. Nickel-based superalloys can operate at high temperatures, often above 90% of their melting point, due to solid solution strengthening from elements like W, Mo, Ta, and Nb, as well as precipitation strengthening from γ' phases like Ni3(Al,Ti). Their microstructure consists mainly of a γ matrix with γ' precipitates, as well as carbides that form at grain boundaries. Key applications include turbine blades, jet engines, nuclear reactors, and industrial gas turbines due to their high strength and corrosion resistance at elevated temperatures.
