Media shot angles and types
-Establishing Shot- tells the audience
when and where we are (it’s usually an
exterior shot so you can see weather and
time of day). Quite often the establishing
shit is also a wide angle shotso the
audience can see more about the setting
at once.
-Long Shot- a long shot is where you can
see the entire of the person in shots body
and it can show multiple things such as
more detail the surrounding setting to the
actors costume and things we wouldn’t
otherwisesee in a mid-shot. These are
quite often wiseshots as well as it give the
audience more info about what’s going on.
-Mid-shot- also called a ‘medium shot’
shows only the middle to upper portion of
the actors body and it is used to show
more closely the details on someone’s
face and smaller details like emotions.
-Close-up- this shotshows very little
background and mainly focuses on the
main focal point of the shotwhether that
be an object that
-Extreme close-up- this shotshow a very
intensely close shootof an object or of a
person’s faceusually is used to show
emotion or importance and it makes the
audience feel uncomfortable.
-Point of view shot- this is a shotused to
make the audience feel as if they are in
the situation or position of the actor and
it’s done by placing the camera so it looks
as if you are seeing through their eyes.
-Over the shoulder shot- a shot that’s
often used in conversations or scenes
with two people in to make the audience
feel as if they werereally there.
-low angle shot- as the title say the shot is
from a low angle and shows the person or
object in the frameis high in status or
powerful.
-Highangle shot- again self-explanatory
but it’s a shottaken from a high angle
looking down on the main focus of the
shotto show that it is weak or vulnerable.
-Bird’s eye view shot- this is a shottaken
froma crane or possibly a
helicopter/drone if it’s really high up and it
looks directly down or out and across a
landscapeto show the setting or to give
the audience a broader view of where the
shotis taking place.
-Crane Shot- shot taken fromhigh up and
usually used for action scenes as the crane
can more in big arcing movements so it
can move very freely and change levels
easily too to follow the focus of the shot.
-Two shot- when two people are in a shot
together. This is used to determine the
relationship between the people as if
they’restanding right next to each other it
suggests they are close/working together
or possibly romantically involved. If
they’restanding face on but distinctly
separated then it shows they aren’tfond of each other.
-The 180 degree rule- this is a rule used when filming a
conversation mostoften and it basically states that
when filming the two people you need to pick one side
of them to film on (e.g. always p1’s left and p2’s right)
otherwiseit will confusethe audience as to wherethe
conversation is taking place.
-Shot, reverse, shot- also filmed during a conversation, this
is when the shots cut fromp1 saying something, p2 saying
something, then back to p1 saying so its kind of like
conversation tennis and cuts between the two people dependent on the flow
of the dialogue.
-Pans and tilts- this is where the camera is
stationary on a tripod so only the head of the
camera moves. If it’s a pan the tripod head
swivels left to rightso horizontally often used
to show more of the scenery or to track
action. If the tripod head moves vertically up
or down the it’s a tilt.
-Dolly shots- the camera is placed on a
moving dolly (somekind of moving vehicle, it
can vary froma chair on wheels to a
motorbike) and then physically moves to
follow the action.
-Tracking shots- a physicaltrack is laid down in
the path of where you want the camera to
move to and the camera is attached to a cart
with wheels so it can be smoothly rolled
around the track in one continuous shot.
-Handheldshots- these are pretty self
explanatory but its basically a shot that is
moving in someway that is being physically
moved by hand so no track or dolly meaning
its slightly less stable and smooth.
