King Leopold s Imperialism Happened To The Democratic...
The Effects of Imperialism Imperialism was a negative event that happened to the Democratic
Republic of Congo. The country was first impressed by the Belgian king, King Leopold II. He
ruled the land not as a colony but as his own. He treated the Congolese as slaves to gather him
resources to help make him more wealthy. Imperialism was the worst thing that happened to the
Democratic Republicof Congo, King Leopold II enslaved the people, and stripped the land of
resources, punished them which ultimately lead to the Belgian government stripping him of
Power The rule of King Leopold II instilled disturbing methods of ruling. He enslaved the people
of The democratic republic of Congo (Congolese) to gather him resources that would only
benefit him. He was willing to do whatever it took to gain resources, even if it meant enslaving
the people. King Leopold II nearly enslaved many of the Congolese people in order to gain
wealth, and to bring power (Citation) imperialism had a negative impact on the country, it had a
long lasting impacts on the country because he depleted them of their resources which means
they don t have much to export as a country now. King Leopold II used the people as slaves to
gather their resources due to the danger of the work, which resulted in many casualties and injuries.
He wanted to rule the country as he wanted rather than what was right for the people. He lied to the
Belgian government in order to gain power of the country, by saying that his

The Success Of An English Language Learner
Success in EWRT 1A From almost 8000 miles away landing here, I not only packed up my
luggage full of clothes and shoes, but also had my determination to gain a band new and successful
life here in the United States. I choose here for studying and seizing more opportunity for self
accomplishment. Undoubtedly, China, where I come from, owns the very different system of
education and language. Like many of the Chinese students studying abroad, I have gone through
the roughest part of that pattern and have been taken a glance of the outside world. I chose to
escape from where I got used to and started my journey here with my dream of a better and even
successful life. It is obvious that language would be the first major problems I need to face
directly. As an English language learner here in the United States, probably I am not at the same
level as those who are native speakers here. Thus, there will be more problems for me to
overcome it and to success. Mixed up with my confidence and faith to achieving, along with my
experiences and skills gained in learninglanguage from both China and here, I believe I can
achieve the goal of success in EWRT 1A. My family background prepared me to be successful in
English 1A. Actually they neither speak English nor train me speak in English. The reason why I
consider my background is beneficial is that I have been a bilingual since I live in China. I speak
both Cantonese and Teochew language, both of which contains the total

Martin Luther King Jr.’s Letter from Birmingham Jail Essay
Power Analysis: Martin Luther King Jr. s Letter from Birmingham Jail A statement from eight white
clergymen from Alabama prompted Martin Luther King s Letter From Birmingham Jail . This
statement criticized Kings actions of non violent protests against racial segregation and the
injustice of unequal civil rights in America (Carpenter elt al.). The eight clergymen considered
Birmingham to be their town and King was disrupting the Law and Order and Common Sense
established in coping with racial issues in Alabama during this time (Carpenter elt al. par 1). These
clergymen considered King an outsider and describe his actions as unwise and untimely (Carpenter
elt al. par 3). This statement suggests that there is an appropriate time... Show more content on

Martin Luther King s Jr. s letter was influential in inspiring and ultimately altering societal
attitude on racial issues. He used a creative use of language that addresses any plausible audience
including: the clergymen, the religious moderates, the equal rights supporters and the oppressed
black community. The use of famous icons, religious leaders, and traditional scholars as
references provided a multitude of examples that clearly illustrated King s key points. Moreover,
King carefully analyzed the duplicity of racial segregation through examples of civil
disobedience among important historical icons valued in society (King par 21). In doing this
King is able to utilize Luke s, three dimensional approach and tilt the power dynamic in his favor.
It is Luke s political strategy that helps King to create the desired power shift. His approach forces
his audience to look beyond the surface (one dimensional view), into the First Amendment rights to
protest (second dimensional view), and further into the behavior that oppresses and segregates the
black community (third dimensional view) (Lukes). King creates parallels and invokes images that
are familiar to his audience. In particular, in aims these images to the White Anglo Saxon society
by creating the awareness of their hypocrisy. King uses the examples of Shadrach, Meschack and

Many members of his executive team were also former managers with VF Corporation. With a
strategy of simplifying Carter s products, Rowan and his team returned to producing what they
called high volume, basic apparel. Product design remained relatively consistent from year to year:
About two thirds of the apparel was carried forward from season to season with the same fabric and

improving the capabilities of their supply chain while exploring offshore sourcing options.
Throughout the company s history, it had relied on domestic manufacturing to produce its clothing.
But amidst an increasingly global environment in which more and more U.S. companies were
outsourcing production abroad, Rowan sought cost improvements and manufacturing flexibility

Internal Strengths And Weaknesses Of John Lewis
Summary
The aim of this report is to explore the internal strengths and weaknesses of John Lewis and the
external threats and opportunities for this organisation. Secondly, it will explore how John Lewis
could use this SWOT analysis to benefit them in the future.
Introduction
John Lewis is a British department store that operates in the United Kindom and is well known for
its Never Knowingly Undersold policy that brings quality products to the UK high streets and
online shopping. A SWOT analysisis intended to analyse the organisation s current status and its
potential for the future. Morrison (2011, p. 158) states that a SWOT analysis is a strategic tool
used by businesses to assess the organisation s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats.
Using a SWOT analysis will encompass a detailed evaluation of the organisation for John Lewis,
which could be used to benefit the company in the future. As Wetherly Otter (2008, pp. 24 25)
says The capacity of a business to take advantage of opportunities and resist threats will depend on
its internal strengths and weaknesses. But if John Lewis has the internal strengths to undertake a
change a SWOT analysis will help as it was designed to enable an organisation to take into account
internal and external factors that may affect its strategic planning decisions and thus improve its
prospects of success (Harrison, 2014, p. 6).

Stereotyping And Stereotypes
Stereotyping someone without knowing someone can bring unwanted conflicts and wrong
impressions. The other college students talked about me, as they tended to, not knowing that I
could hear what they were saying. Look at her, she looks mean and rude. The look on my face
must be ugly, I suppose. Stereotypes always upset me and when the other girls were talking
about me was no exception. After hearing what was said I began to grow angry as the elevator
started to go up. I was alone, so I started thinking and talking out loud to myself about what was
said about me, when the elevator stopped on my door room floor, I realized I shouldn t be that
upset, because it was not true. I do not have to prove anybody wrong, or explain myself to anyone
until they talked to me to see what they thoughtof me was wrong. I continued to walk in the
direction of my dorm room. I got to my dorm room and I introduced myself to one of my
roommates and her family. I picked my bed, dressers, and computer desk. I started unpacking
and moving my furniture around to accommodate me. One by one, I put my clothes in the
dressers neatly while my family brought the rest of my things into the room. After a couple of
hours, I was done unpacking and all I had to do was go to the store and get food, drinks, and
other things that I needed. I came back to my dorm and it was time for parents to leave, so I
walked my family out and talked to them and told them that I will call them later. Saying bye, was

The History Of The Big Ear Radio Telescope
Have you ever pondered what may lie beyond our solar system? Perhaps you ve decided that
there is no way anything could be out there, in the empty, seemingly endless void we call space.
However, perhaps there is other life out there, life more advanced than us, perhaps life just now
exiting what to us would be the stone age, the possibilities are truly infinite. Personally, I believe
there are other beings out there in the vast expanse. On August 15th, 1977 at 11:16 PM EDT the
Big Ear Radio Telescope located at the Ohio State University received an unknown radio
transmission that came from somewhere seemingly within the Sagittarius Constellation, bearing the
hallmarks of extraterrestrial origin. Eighteen years prior to this, Two Cornwell... Show more content

We already have the International Space Station, where some cosmonauts live in, and in the
vacuum of space temperatures reach roughly about 270.45В°C, or 454.81В°F (From The

that is earthlike only just frozen over, it d be a tad bit simpler. Next, we can take a look at the
Fermi Paradox. The Fermi Paradox states whether or not we are alone in our galaxy, and if not,
where is everyone? In life there are filters, or rather, great barriers for life to overcome. For
example, some filters we may have to go through in the future include Nuclear War, and Climate
change. Some filters that may explain why we haven t found any signs of advanced civilization
may include things such as Advanced Technology exists, but when activated, it ends up destroying
the planet. The last words of every advanced civilization would be something like This new
technology will solve all our problems once I push this button! If this is the case, then chances are,
we ourselves could be much closer to the end than we are to the beginning of human existence.
Another filter could be that there is a type 3 civilization (Simply put, a civilization with some of/the
most advanced technology imaginable) somewhere out there, and when

Media Gender Roles
Is our belief influenced by the Media
We are living in a world where your identity is influenced by the media. Media is involved in our
daily lives. Media has represented on what people think about topics, one of the most common ones
is gender roles. Media indicated their messages into our consciousness at every opportunity that it
had. Gender roles are a set of norms dictating the personality and actions of people based on their
biological sex or what they identify. Gender roles in media are used in delirious stereotypes can
cause self image in young adults, causing loss of confidence, mostly in women. Many authors had
expressed their opinion about gender roles in media through non fiction articles. For instance, Katty
Kay and Claire Shipman, who wrote, The Confidence Gap, confronts the lack of woman s
confidence impacting their performance. Another example is given by Cordelia Fine, who
wrote, Why Toys so Gendered? in which she says that gendered toy marketing doesn t create
gender stereotype, but it reinforces them. Lastly, Allison Lantagne, who wrote, Gender roles in
Media, says that is up to the individual to decide what type of role they are going to adopt. She
also includes that media reinforces social norms because the public accepts them. I agree with
Allison Lantagne says that the media has an influence on our beliefs and attitudes toward gender
because of its perfected image of genders, projects what a woman and a male should do, and what
abilities each

Football Hooligans
Football hooligans.
Football has been an attractive sport around the world. Through this sport, many inhabitants have
denominated themselves as fans of a particular football team. These people support the players in
each match they have. Every football team has a group of fans that go to the stadium to encourage
them in the game, but also they attend there to enjoy the show. Nevertheless, not all the fans go to
see the matches since there are some people who belong to groups called hooligans. Those groups
are highly violent, and they do not mind killing other people to defend their team. Consequently,
citizens who belong to these violent groups should not be able to come back to the stadiums
because hooligans do not benefit the image of football, do not understand the meaning of football,
and do not respect the diversity of preferences. Violent hooligans have been damaging the image of
the football day to day. First of all, the hooligans affect the perception of football because most
members of violent hooligans are adolescents, and it makes people think that football promotes the
violence. According to a study performed by a web page called Monographs said that of every one

that whether they have to kill someone to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The s Model Of Culture Care Theory
Healthcare in the United States of America is an ever increasing field of diversity. Many
healthcare workers are uneducated in diversity, resulting in insufficient patient care. As a result
patients from different backgrounds do not receive proper treatment, and refuse to seek medical
attention, or are over charged for simple procedures. Educating healthcare workers is the key to
decreasing unnecessary physician visits as well as providing patients with the sense of
understanding and respect regarding their health decisions. The preceding information will
provide a brief overview of Leinigner s Model of Culture Care Theory, Leinigner s theory
applied to the Colombian Culture for medical professionals, feelings about access to health care,
barriers in healthcare, alternative medicine and food preferences. The Leininger s Culture Care
Theory focuses on culturally congruent care for diverse clients based on healthcare workers
becoming cultural competent. Leininger s model can be applied to any healthcare practice as a
clinical assessment tool (Leininger, 2002). A practicing nursing professional should focus on
providing culturally adapted care, functions, and acknowledge any social norms for the client.
The client s health should also be adapted based on what is culturally defined as a positive or
negative state of well being (Creasia Friberg, 2011). If a nurse incorporates Leiniger s theory, then

Mechanical Valve Induced Lung Injury
During mechanical ventilation, patients are at risk of injuries to their lungs caused by improper
settings on ventilators. Mechanical ventilator induced lung injury (VILI) can affect the lung in
several ways. Some of the ways the lung become affected is by excessive pressure, excessive
volume, and not enough volume. When the lungs are affected by excessive pressure its termed
pulmonary barotrauma. On the other hand, if the lungs receive too much volume it s called
volutrauma. However, when the lungs don t receive enough volume its termed atelectrauma. This
paper describes how pulmonary barotrauma, pulmonary volutrauma, and pulmonary atelectrauma
affects the lungs during mechanical ventilationand ways to prevent them from happening. The first
ventilator induced lung injury that I want to discuss is pulmonary barotrauma. Pulmonary
barotrauma is a lung complication caused by too much positive pressure forced into the lungs by a
mechanical ventilator. Pulmonary barotrauma occurs when the alveolar begins to rupture due to
elevated transalveolar pressure. Transalveolar pressure is a function of both the tidal volume and
the overall compliance of the lungs. Researchers use plateau pressures to get an estimation of
transalveolar pressure. Plateau pressures can be used as a tool to help measure for the risk of
pulmonary barotrauma. Researchers have discovered that plateau pressures less than 30 cmH2O
have shown to reduce the cause of pulmonary barotrauma. Guy W. Soo wrote

The Organizational Culture And Subcultures Within A...
The organizational culture and subcultures within a business determines, to a larger extent, how the
business performs and the quality of people that comprises an organization. Such culture is often
initially created on purpose, but takes on life and identity of its own, developing organically and
eventually controls and cultivates people within the organization.
The case of Lincoln Electric Company is an interesting one, starting from the very early beginnings
when the company was run by the brothers, the original founder John Lincoln who decided to
concentrate on inventions and R D side of things, who handed the helm over to his brother, James
Lincoln. The management system and underlying philosophy at Lincoln can be characterized by
clarity and commitment. The system was instituted with clear priority and purpose and the
management had confidence and courage to commit to the decisions they made. The order of
priority, namely customers first, employees next and stockholders last, makes any subsequent
decision making simple. The values that founded this order of priority, as well as benefits provided
to each of these categories, are based on Christian values, but the empathetic approach that results is
most certainly beneficial to anyone in any of these categories. The caring attitude and evident
sincerity that was demonstrated by actual implementations not only convinced all those concerned

amount of cash they should hold in their reserve in order to be able to cover the potential loss.
Although the term Value at risk has not been used till the1990s, the origins of its measure lie
further back in time. The arithmetic behind the VaR were developed by Harry Markowitz (1952) in
his studies of effects of asset risk, return, correlation, and diversification on probable investment
portfolio returns which contributed to the modern portfolio theory. In fact, the trigger of the use of
VaR came from the crisis that tormented the financial market and the regulatory responses to these
crises. After the great depression of 1929, the Securities Exchange Act established in 1934 the
Security Exchange Commission (SEC), a federal government agency in charge of regulating stocks
and options exchanges. Since the SEC initially required banks to keep their borrowing below
2000% of their equity capital, Banks developed risk measures and control devices to ensure that
they meet the capital requirements. In the 1970, the introduction of financial derivatives markets
and floating rate exchanges have significantly increased the volatility, which is the risk, in the

Global Capital Markets When contemplating expansion and growth, it is imperative to understand

new investments, is advantageous as it is available immediately, there is no associated interest,
there aren t any restrictions imposed by outside parties, and overall, grants flexibility. However, it
can be disadvantageous, as it is not tax deductible, capital is not increased, and there is more

Racist Death Penalty
The Death Penalty is a racist practice and is costly to go through with. The death penalty must be
abolished for reasons such as punishing the poor, violating the human right to live, and being
incorrectly, or unfairly sentenced to death due to race or inaccurate evidence. What exactly gives
governments all this power to decide whether someone lives or dies? Along with inequality, the
death penalty punishes the poor. In recent studies if a defendant cannot afford good legal
representation they are more likely to head towards the death penalty. If the defendant can afford
good legal representation they are likely to get a lighter charge. In this situation money is key,
which is unfair to the poor as they cannot improve their situation. It is present that a large percent
of defendants cannot afford to hire a skillful defense lawyer and are required to use inexperienced

The issue is much broader than that of simply preventing discrimination against negroes, the

Native American Culture In The 18th And 19th Century
In the United States, there are over 500 federally recognized American and Native tribes. All which
study and practice their own set of cultures and values. Religion, language, food and way of dress
are what makes every tribe different in their own unique way. The Indian Wars of both the 18th and
19th century caused many of these tribes to relocate thus causing them to not only lose their
homelands but also their cultural identity. Native Americans were prohibited from practicing
religion and cultural ceremonies. This caused a recession in youth obtaining the knowledge to keep
their cultural renaissance alive and pass on their tribal dialects to future generations. Today,
however Native Americans are thriving at branding their youth with generation after generation of

The Problem And Its Background Essay
CHAPTER 1
The Problem and Its Background
Introduction
Diabetes is a systemic disease caused by a decrease in the secretion of insulin or reduced
sensitivity or responsiveness to insulin by target tissue. (Beale, et al., 2011) The incidence of
diabetes is growing rapidly in the United States and worldwide. An estimated 347 million people
around the world are afflicted with diabetes. (Whalen, et al., 2012) According to World Health
Organization (WHO), Diabetes prevalence among adults over 18 years of age has risen from
4.7% in 1980 to 8.5% in 2014. It is the major cause of blindness, kidney failure, heart attack, stroke
and limbic amputation. World Health Organization (WHO) projects that diabetes will be the 7th
leading cause of death in 2030. It is a complex and costly disease that can affect nearly every organ
in the body and result in devastating consequences. The leading cause of non traumatic lower
extremity amputations, renal failure, and blindness in working age adults, diabetes is also a major
cause of premature mortality, stroke, cardiovascular disease, peripheral vascular disease, congenital
malformations, perinatal mortality, and disability. (Cefalu, 2000) Insulintherapy and oral
hypoglycemic agents have demonstrated improvement in glycaemic control. However, Insulin
therapy has some disadvantages such as ineffectiveness following oral administration, short shelf
life, of the need for constant refrigeration, and fatal hypoglycaemia, in the event of excess dosage.

Once again, we have a new president who is working hard to put change once again to America.
Our new president Donald Trump is using executive orders to try and replace Obamacare. What
are executive orders? Executive order are orders that the current president gives to the government
and basically has the full force of power to make changes. Obamacare was a plan that our former
president Barak Obama created to make affordable healthcare and insurance (Amadeo). The issue
that Donald Trumpwas trying to go at was completely removing Obamacare and puting in a new
plan that will be more affordable and more beneficial to people. Is it going to be hard for Donald

What are the other major changes with Donald Trump s executive plan on removing
Obamacare? According to the company Motely Fool , With a spotless cancelation taking a
gander right now, Congressional Republicans may swing to a procedure known as compromise,
which would enable them to annul the segments of Obamacare that effect the government
spending plan. All together for a compromise bill to pass the Senate, a lion s share of 51 votes is
all that would be required, and Republicans voting along partisan loyalties can achieve this
aggregate. Compromise would wipe out Obamacare s endowments, and the Common Duty
Installment, which would positively affect how a huge number of Americans set up their
charges (William). Another issue is that on one hand, the ACA is yet the wellbeing rule that
everyone must follow, regardless of the possibility that it is by all accounts living on re
appropriated time. This implies the individual order is still law, and the individuals who pick
not to buy medical coverage ought to pay the SRP, unless they re excluded. Then again, without
line 61 filled in, the IRS has no certification that the citizen paid the SRP or was even
safeguarded in 2016 (William). The IRS has proposed that in the event if it has a question about
a specific expense form it ll catch up with those citizens after the recording procedure is over.
Notwithstanding, the IRS has likewise already said that it wouldn t embellish compensation or
pursue a man s property for not paying the SRP (William). Trump s official request has made it
almost unimaginable for the IRS to gather the SRP or to solidly confirm a people s medical
coverage status. Trump was unsuccessful in reforming Obamacare using executive orders, but we
can see how Trump s executive orders were put into action. He commanded officials and federal
government agents to start attacking Obamacare to find it s weak

It was very unlike Billy to ever do something so rash; he brought out the best in everyone. Captain
Vere felt in his heart that Billy s actions were a mistake, but he could not be sure. The accusation
Claggart made was mutiny, and mutiny was a serious crime. Vere had no proof that Billy was not
guilty, so for the safety of himself and his crew, he sacrificed Billy s life.
In his decision making, Vere reminded himself he was under the oath of the King, not human
inclinations. If Vere had not done this Billy might have lived. This was not, however, the real
reason for changing his mind. The real reason was because others would have followed in Billy
s alleged footsteps if he were not punished. Billy Budd s life was sacrificed for an unjust reason,
and the circumstances surrounding his death were definitely questionable. However, Vere made
the decision that he had to although it wasn t morally right for Captain Vere it was the only fair
decision he could have made to hang him. The consequences of what might have happened if his
life had been spared were far greater that those of grief for Billy s death. Billy s death was truly
necessary for things to remain in order on the ship, especially without crew members entertaining

Hamilton was appointed the first Secretary of Treasurer and Jefferson was the first Secretary of
State. Jefferson was the older man of the two with twelve years being born on 1743, in Virgina to
a wealthy family, while Hamilton was born on 1755 in the West Indies to a poor family. Jefferson
had the best education the colonies could offer due to his family s status as wealthy planters and

Jefferson believes the constitution protected the right of the people and for independence both
Hamilton and Jefferson had opposing views. Jefferson argues that independence comes from
land ownership and if all the people can have an agrarian lifestyle. The idea mostly comes from
how he was born into a rich family and his father and himself were planters. Therefore he
believed that if the people are living fine independent lives where members of society can make
their own food and live on their own property the country as a collective will be independent as
well. Hamilton disagreed and believed the opposite that if the nation is independent than the people
will have independence. For this belief he wanted to start trade with other countries and in order to
do that he thought America had to start manufacturing and creating its own goods to trade with
other countries. Hamilton s point is stating how if the society wants people to make products that
can be traded with other countries, then it can open job opportunities for the citizens. Therefore
the country will have independence by creating their own goods for profit and the people will
have independence by finding a job and being able to pay for their food leading to their
independence. Jefferson argued against this stating that if we got to war with the countries that
were trading with what happens then. Later on, after Hamilton s death and during Jefferson s

issue is a social phenomenon that affects every city across the country; small or large. It is
important to understand that consequently, one way or another, this issue affects not only the
homeless veteran, the city, state and government, but every citizen within each city. Bring forth
more attention to the fact that additional resources are required; resources such as prevention
programs, services, education and vocational training, affordable housing, and medical services. In
the last few years, government officials have realized that the current services for veterans are
inadequate or insufficient. The government realizes that with the end of both wars, Iraq and
Afghanistan, the number of homeless veteranwill surely increase. Additionally let s not forget that

The whole literature of this period was inspired with a growing spirit of patriotism, and an

Government
Rome like Carthage traces it s founding myth back to the Phoneticians of Tyre and shared many of
the same governmental structures as Carthage with a Senate, assemblies, etc (Duncan, 2016).
Undoubtedly it was influence by the Greeks, however it grew beyond the simple city states of
Greece. It was the evolution of Roman government which differentiated themselves and allowed
them to eventually surpass their Greek neighbors.
Military
Early Rome was a warrior people whose success was founded not just based on that of their
military but their ability to adapt and absorb the military strategies and tactics of those they fought.
The navel vessels via the Carthaginians where derived from the Greek triremes, and even the
formations hearken back to the Trojan phalanx. They took what worked, improved it and made

Japan s Attack On Pearl Harbor Essay
World War Two was a conflict between the Axis powers (Germany, Japan and Italy) and the
Allied powers (Great Britain, France, USSR, United States and China). The conflict was
sparked when Hitler took over Poland during September of 1939. This invasion was the last
straw for Hitler as the world had already warned him many times not to invade any more
countries. As Germany waged war on Poland, days later, Britain, Canada and France had
declared war on Germany. This was the official start of what is known as the deadliest war in the
history of the world. As the fighting went on the Germans were doing very well until their ally,
Japan, made a fatal mistake that would end up causing them the war. On December 7th 1941,
Japan attacked Pearl Harbor. Pearl Harbor was the United States naval base in Hawaii that
housed a large amount of their naval fleet during the 1940 s. Japan s attack on Pearl Harbor was
the breaking point for the United States, so they finally ended their times of being Isolationists
and declared war on Japan and Germany just a day later. This was the most fatal mistake in the
war for the Axis powers, because at the time, the US had immense wealth, weaponry and allies. If
it were not for Japan s attack on Pearl Harbor, America may have never joined the war, however,
because they did attack them, the US ended up winning the war for the Allied powers because of
their advanced weaponry and technology. Because of the United States of America s involvement

Analysis Of Blink By Malcolm Gladwell
Is Blink Good Psychology? Swiss psychiatrist, Carl Jung, once said, The pendulum of the mind
oscillates between sense and nonsense, not between right and wrong. In his book, Blink,
Malcolm Gladwell sets out to prove that the real difference between good and bad decision
making has more to do with our abilities as humans to focus on select, particular details about a
situation as opposed to the sheer amount of information we process, but are the tactics utilized
by Gladwell in his novel good psychology? It is of my belief that Gladwell s work is psychology
due to the amount of outside studies, research, and applications Gladwell incorporates into his
book in addition to the fact that it attempts to follow the eight critical thinking guidelines as per
Psychology and the DSM 5. While Gladwell does not specifically outline how his theory of thin

How Absinthe Is A Alcoholic Distilled Spirit
Absinthe is a highly alcoholic distilled spirit, reputed to have psychotropic qualities. In the
history of liquors it holds a special place for being one of the most controversial drinks of French
history. Yet it wasn t always that way, for a period in the late 1800 s absinthe was one of the
most popular liquors in the western world. Some companies at the height of its popularity
produced over 30,000 liters of it a day. American Chemist T. A. Breaux has spent years
researching the drink; through his research he has found that the drink originated as a medicine
developed as a digestive aide in the late 1700 s (pg.2 3). The drink then rose in popularity after
the 1840 s when the French government would dispense rations of the drink to its soldiers
fighting in foreign campaigns as a means of purifying unclean water. These soldiers developed a
taste for the drink claiming it to be the drink of a true man, due to its strong bitter taste (pg. 4 5).
By the late 1870 s it became the most coveted drink, especially among artist and intellectuals who
would feature the iconic drink in their works. Such as Edgar Degas famous Painting L Absinthe

Among the critical responses to Home to Harlem, W.E.B. Du Bois s criticism of Claude McKay s
text seemingly speaks from an essentialist perspective. Du Bois simply found that McKay s
representation of black culture within his novel reproduced stereotypical and crude images which
white audiences desired in the midst of the Harlem Renaissance. In response to Du Bois, McKay
argued that the novel was created for a black audience, but, to delve even deeper outside of
Claude McKay s views, it could be argued that Home to Harlem does not produce a single identity
at all. Rather, Home to Harlem s perpetual mobility and movement invests in the idea of black
identity as production rather than as the exhibition of a collective one true self ... Show more content

exactly how he d started, having been thinking a gitting away from the stinking mess [of

Throughout the text, Jake frequents a variety of unique places, from Harlem to Pittsburgh to

audience is privy to a plethora of details regarding Jake s rousing endeavors in every new

needs a litre of diesel fuel for processing and transport, and 220 litres of water for irrigaton and
washing the fruit. The water may be a renewable resource, but the fuel is not only irreplaceable but
is a pollutant, too.
The problem is that fossil fuels, such as petrol and diesel are ... Show more content on

The aluminium for the yogurt jar lids has come from mines many thousands of miles from the
packaging plant. Then there is the machinery used for packaging the yogurt, which had to be
brought in from Switzerland, perhaps, or Britain, to say nothing of the transport of the workers in
the yogurt processing plant going to and from their homes every day. And the transport of
shoppers from their homes to the shops, in order to buy the yogurt.. So the circle widens, at every
point adding to the real costs of the yogurt, but which do not get added to the price and instead
must be paid for in other ways at other times.
|Food miles are big in the food aisles. |
|In early September, home grown seasonal fruit and vegetables like apples, onions, carrots and
green beans were available |

from the USA, onions over 12,000|

Kenya (3,600miles). |
And then there is the question of the true cost of meat, and the vast tracts of land devoted to the
growing of feedstuffs for rearing animals. This land is referred to in the British study of food
miles (published by the SAFE Alliance) as ghost acres .

Ethnic Cleansing In The United States
Ethnicity is defined as an ethnic group; a social group that shares a common and distinctive
culture, religion, or language. There can be many different ethnic groups in each country. In
China alone there are 56 recognized ethnic groups. In the United States there are six recognized
ethnic groups. They are White American, Black or African American, Alaska Native or Native
American, Native Hawaiian, Asian American, or people of two or more races. The US census
also groups Americans into the category of Hispanic or Latino or Not Hispanic or Latino .

Ethnic cleansing is defined as the systematic removal of ethnic or religious groups from a given
territory by a more powerful ethnic group, with the intent of making it ethnically homogenous.
This basically means, one ethnic groups removes another group to make a certain place s
population just their ethnic group. Ethnic cleansing can be carried out in many ways, such as
forced migration, intimidation, and mass murder. One of the most cruel and widespread
examples of this was the Holocaust. It was portrayed in the book The Diary of Anne Frank . In
1933, a man named Adolf Hitler was elected as chancellor of Germany. Germany was angry and
embarrassed from WW1, and they wanted someone to blame. Hitler gave them someone, the
jews. He blamed them for Germany s defeat. The Franks are the main focus of the book The
Diary of Anne Frank . After Hitler was elected the Franks started to notice the anger and hatred
around them, so they fled to Amsterdam. In 1940, Germany invaded The Netherlands and they
began to place restrictions on the jews. Anne Frank and her sister had to switch to an all jewish
school, they had to wear stars on their clothes, and they weren t allowed in certain places. In
1942 Anne s sister received a call up notice to be relocated to a work camp. Her father then
decide it was time to tell them about their hiding place. They left their house a mess and left a
note about leaving for Switzerland to throw the authorities off. They moved into the attic of Otto
Frank s office building. They were joined by a few others shorty after. During her time there, Anne
kept a very detailed diary about her daily life and her thoughts. They lived there for two years until
August 4, 1944 the German police stormed the building and found them from an anonymous tip.
The family was then sent to a concentration camp called Auschwitz. The men and women were
separated and those who were too young or

  • 3. The Success Of An English Language Learner Success in EWRT 1A From almost 8000 miles away landing here, I not only packed up my luggage full of clothes and shoes, but also had my determination to gain a band new and successful life here in the United States. I choose here for studying and seizing more opportunity for self accomplishment. Undoubtedly, China, where I come from, owns the very different system of education and language. Like many of the Chinese students studying abroad, I have gone through the roughest part of that pattern and have been taken a glance of the outside world. I chose to escape from where I got used to and started my journey here with my dream of a better and even successful life. It is obvious that language would be the first major problems I need to face directly. As an English language learner here in the United States, probably I am not at the same level as those who are native speakers here. Thus, there will be more problems for me to overcome it and to success. Mixed up with my confidence and faith to achieving, along with my experiences and skills gained in learninglanguage from both China and here, I believe I can achieve the goal of success in EWRT 1A. My family background prepared me to be successful in English 1A. Actually they neither speak English nor train me speak in English. The reason why I consider my background is beneficial is that I have been a bilingual since I live in China. I speak both Cantonese and Teochew language, both of which contains the total ... Martin Luther King Jr.’s Letter from Birmingham Jail Essay Power Analysis: Martin Luther King Jr. s Letter from Birmingham Jail A statement from eight white clergymen from Alabama prompted Martin Luther King s Letter From Birmingham Jail . This statement criticized Kings actions of non violent protests against racial segregation and the injustice of unequal civil rights in America (Carpenter elt al.). The eight clergymen considered Birmingham to be their town and King was disrupting the Law and Order and Common Sense established in coping with racial issues in Alabama during this time (Carpenter elt al. par 1). These clergymen considered King an outsider and describe his actions as unwise and untimely (Carpenter elt al. par 3). This statement suggests that there is an appropriate time... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Martin Luther King s Jr. s letter was influential in inspiring and ultimately altering societal attitude on racial issues. He used a creative use of language that addresses any plausible audience including: the clergymen, the religious moderates, the equal rights supporters and the oppressed black community. The use of famous icons, religious leaders, and traditional scholars as references provided a multitude of examples that clearly illustrated King s key points. Moreover, King carefully analyzed the duplicity of racial segregation through examples of civil disobedience among important historical icons valued in society (King par 21). In doing this King is able to utilize Luke s, three dimensional approach and tilt the power dynamic in his favor. It is Luke s political strategy that helps King to create the desired power shift. His approach forces his audience to look beyond the surface (one dimensional view), into the First Amendment rights to protest (second dimensional view), and further into the behavior that oppresses and segregates the black community (third dimensional view) (Lukes). King creates parallels and invokes images that are familiar to his audience. In particular, in aims these images to the White Anglo Saxon society by creating the awareness of their hypocrisy. Internal Strengths And Weaknesses Of John Lewis Summary The aim of this report is to explore the internal strengths and weaknesses of John Lewis and the external threats and opportunities for this organisation. Secondly, it will explore how John Lewis could use this SWOT analysis to benefit them in the future. Introduction John Lewis is a British department store that operates in the United Kindom and is well known for its Never Knowingly Undersold policy that brings quality products to the UK high streets and online shopping. A SWOT analysisis intended to analyse the organisation s current status and its potential for the future. Morrison (2011, p. 158) states that a SWOT analysis is a strategic tool used by businesses to assess the organisation s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. Using a SWOT analysis will encompass a detailed evaluation of the organisation for John Lewis, which could be used to benefit the company in the future. As Wetherly Otter (2008, pp. 24 25) says The capacity of a business to take advantage of opportunities and resist threats will depend on its internal strengths and weaknesses. But if John Lewis has the internal strengths to undertake a change a SWOT analysis will help as it was designed to enable an organisation to take into account internal and external factors that may affect its strategic planning decisions and thus improve its prospects of success (Harrison, 2014, p. 6). • 7. Stereotyping And Stereotypes Stereotyping someone without knowing someone can bring unwanted conflicts and wrong impressions. The other college students talked about me, as they tended to, not knowing that I could hear what they were saying. Look at her, she looks mean and rude. The look on my face must be ugly, I suppose. Stereotypes always upset me and when the other girls were talking about me was no exception. After hearing what was said I began to grow angry as the elevator started to go up. I was alone, so I started thinking and talking out loud to myself about what was said about me, when the elevator stopped on my door room floor, I realized I shouldn t be that upset, because it was not true. I do not have to prove anybody wrong, or explain myself to anyone until they talked to me to see what they thoughtof me was wrong. I continued to walk in the direction of my dorm room. I got to my dorm room and I introduced myself to one of my roommates and her family. I picked my bed, dressers, and computer desk. I started unpacking and moving my furniture around to accommodate me. One by one, I put my clothes in the dressers neatly while my family brought the rest of my things into the room. After a couple of hours, I was done unpacking and all I had to do was go to the store and get food, drinks, and other things that I needed. I came back to my dorm and it was time for parents to leave, so I walked my family out and talked to them and told them that I will call them later. Saying bye, was ... Perhaps you ve decided that there is no way anything could be out there, in the empty, seemingly endless void we call space. However, perhaps there is other life out there, life more advanced than us, perhaps life just now exiting what to us would be the stone age, the possibilities are truly infinite. Personally, I believe there are other beings out there in the vast expanse. On August 15th, 1977 at 11:16 PM EDT the Big Ear Radio Telescope located at the Ohio State University received an unknown radio transmission that came from somewhere seemingly within the Sagittarius Constellation, bearing the hallmarks of extraterrestrial origin. In life there are filters, or rather, great barriers for life to overcome. For example, some filters we may have to go through in the future include Nuclear War, and Climate change. Some filters that may explain why we haven t found any signs of advanced civilization may include things such as Advanced Technology exists, but when activated, it ends up destroying the planet. The last words of every advanced civilization would be something like This new technology will solve all our problems once I push this button! If this is the case, then chances are, we ourselves could be much closer to the end than we are to the beginning of human existence. Media has represented on what people think about topics, one of the most common ones is gender roles. Media indicated their messages into our consciousness at every opportunity that it had. Gender roles are a set of norms dictating the personality and actions of people based on their biological sex or what they identify. • 16. Mechanical Valve Induced Lung Injury During mechanical ventilation, patients are at risk of injuries to their lungs caused by improper settings on ventilators. Mechanical ventilator induced lung injury (VILI) can affect the lung in several ways. Some of the ways the lung become affected is by excessive pressure, excessive volume, and not enough volume. When the lungs are affected by excessive pressure its termed pulmonary barotrauma. On the other hand, if the lungs receive too much volume it s called volutrauma. However, when the lungs don t receive enough volume its termed atelectrauma. This paper describes how pulmonary barotrauma, pulmonary volutrauma, and pulmonary atelectrauma affects the lungs during mechanical ventilationand ways to prevent them from happening. The first ventilator induced lung injury that I want to discuss is pulmonary barotrauma. Pulmonary barotrauma is a lung complication caused by too much positive pressure forced into the lungs by a mechanical ventilator. Pulmonary barotrauma occurs when the alveolar begins to rupture due to elevated transalveolar pressure. Transalveolar pressure is a function of both the tidal volume and the overall compliance of the lungs. Researchers use plateau pressures to get an estimation of transalveolar pressure. Plateau pressures can be used as a tool to help measure for the risk of pulmonary barotrauma. Researchers have discovered that plateau pressures less than 30 cmH2O have shown to reduce the cause of pulmonary barotrauma. Guy W. Soo wrote ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The organizational culture and subcultures within a business determines, to a larger extent, how the business performs and the quality of people that comprises an organization. Such culture is often initially created on purpose, but takes on life and identity of its own, developing organically and eventually controls and cultivates people within the organization. The case of Lincoln Electric Company is an interesting one, starting from the very early beginnings when the company was run by the brothers, the original founder John Lincoln who decided to concentrate on inventions and R D side of things, who handed the helm over to his brother, James Lincoln. The management system and underlying philosophy at Lincoln can be characterized by clarity and commitment. The system was instituted with clear priority and purpose and the management had confidence and courage to commit to the decisions they made. The order of priority, namely customers first, employees next and stockholders last, makes any subsequent decision making simple. The values that founded this order of priority, as well as benefits provided to each of these categories, are based on Christian values, but the empathetic approach that results is most certainly beneficial to anyone in any of these categories. Although the term Value at risk has not been used till the1990s, the origins of its measure lie further back in time. The arithmetic behind the VaR were developed by Harry Markowitz (1952) in his studies of effects of asset risk, return, correlation, and diversification on probable investment portfolio returns which contributed to the modern portfolio theory. In fact, the trigger of the use of VaR came from the crisis that tormented the financial market and the regulatory responses to these crises. After the great depression of 1929, the Securities Exchange Act established in 1934 the Security Exchange Commission (SEC), a federal government agency in charge of regulating stocks and options exchanges. Since the SEC initially required banks to keep their borrowing below 2000% of their equity capital, Banks developed risk measures and control devices to ensure that they meet the capital requirements. In the 1970, the introduction of financial derivatives markets and floating rate exchanges have significantly increased the volatility, which is the risk, in the financial markets. The latter was confirmed by the failure in 1995 of Barings, the British investment bank, by the unauthorized trading in Nikkei (Japan s stock market) financial derivatives (futures and options) by Nick Leeson, a young trader in Singapore. Jefferson was the older man of the two with twelve years being born on 1743, in Virgina to a wealthy family, while Hamilton was born on 1755 in the West Indies to a poor family. Jefferson had the best education the colonies could offer due to his family s status as wealthy planters and slave owners giving Jefferson plenty of opportunities to be successful himself. Hamilton had a different route due to his poor family and mothers death and fathers abandonment of the family. Hamilton received his education through people paying for him to go to the colonies... Jefferson argues that independence comes from land ownership and if all the people can have an agrarian lifestyle. The idea mostly comes from how he was born into a rich family and his father and himself were planters. Therefore he believed that if the people are living fine independent lives where members of society can make their own food and live on their own property the country as a collective will be independent as well. Hamilton disagreed and believed the opposite that if the nation is independent than the people will have independence. For this belief he wanted to start trade with other countries and in order to do that he thought America had to start manufacturing and creating its own goods to trade with other countries. Hamilton s point is stating how if the society wants people to make products that can be traded with other countries, then it can open job opportunities for the citizens. Therefore the country will have independence by creating their own goods for profit and the people will have independence by finding a job and being able to pay for their food leading to their independence. Jefferson argued against this stating that if we got to war with the countries that were trading with what happens then. Later on, after Hamilton s death and during Jefferson s ... • 36. Japan s Attack On Pearl Harbor Essay World War Two was a conflict between the Axis powers (Germany, Japan and Italy) and the Allied powers (Great Britain, France, USSR, United States and China). The conflict was sparked when Hitler took over Poland during September of 1939. This invasion was the last straw for Hitler as the world had already warned him many times not to invade any more countries. As Germany waged war on Poland, days later, Britain, Canada and France had declared war on Germany. This was the official start of what is known as the deadliest war in the history of the world. As the fighting went on the Germans were doing very well until their ally, Japan, made a fatal mistake that would end up causing them the war. On December 7th 1941, Japan attacked Pearl Harbor. Pearl Harbor was the United States naval base in Hawaii that housed a large amount of their naval fleet during the 1940 s. Japan s attack on Pearl Harbor was the breaking point for the United States, so they finally ended their times of being Isolationists and declared war on Japan and Germany just a day later. This was the most fatal mistake in the war for the Axis powers, because at the time, the US had immense wealth, weaponry and allies. If it were not for Japan s attack on Pearl Harbor, America may have never joined the war, however, because they did attack them, the US ended up winning the war for the Allied powers because of their advanced weaponry and technology. Personal Narrative Draft Personal Narrative Draft The Meriam Webster dictionary defines a cheerleader as a person who is a member of a group (typically a group of young women) who shout out special songs or chants to encourage the team and entertain the crowd during a game in sports like American football and basketball. This definition described my involvement itself in my beloved sport, but it also explains who I am as a whole person. In my life, I am a cheerleader whether I am on the sidelines under the Friday night lights, or off the field when it comes to being a cheerleader for my family and companions. Once I made my first impression on the judges, it was time for the waiting game. It took a solid three weeks until I got my letter in the mail that held my future cheer sealed inside. To my delight once more, the contents of the letter were more than exciting. Congratulations! You are invited to cheer on Saint Francis Junior Varsity Cheerleading! stated the letter in big bold block letters. The season flew by faster than the speed of light, and before I knew it I was feeling the adrenaline rush again inside the sticky, hot gym. I put my spot on the squad in jeopardy by going for the varsity squad as a junior, which was something very risky because the seniors always got selected above a junior. Taking this risk was something I would have never done, as I used to always play it safe. • 38. Analysis Of Blink By Malcolm Gladwell Is Blink Good Psychology? Swiss psychiatrist, Carl Jung, once said, The pendulum of the mind oscillates between sense and nonsense, not between right and wrong. In his book, Blink, Malcolm Gladwell sets out to prove that the real difference between good and bad decision making has more to do with our abilities as humans to focus on select, particular details about a situation as opposed to the sheer amount of information we process, but are the tactics utilized by Gladwell in his novel good psychology? It is of my belief that Gladwell s work is psychology due to the amount of outside studies, research, and applications Gladwell incorporates into his book in addition to the fact that it attempts to follow the eight critical thinking guidelines as per Psychology and the DSM 5. While Gladwell does not specifically outline how his theory of thin slicing and snap decision making relates to the eight guidelines, this information follows these guidelines; this enables us to more accurately judge the content of his novel because he analyzed the information he used. The first of these is define your terms: In the first several chapters of his book, Gladwell explains to readers the terms he uses such as the adaptive unconscious The adaptive unconscious is thoughtof, instead, as a kind of computer that quickly and quietly processes a lot of the data we need in order to keep functioning as human beings (pg. 11) and priming experiments by giving... • 40. How Absinthe Is A Alcoholic Distilled Spirit Absinthe is a highly alcoholic distilled spirit, reputed to have psychotropic qualities. In the history of liquors it holds a special place for being one of the most controversial drinks of French history. Yet it wasn t always that way, for a period in the late 1800 s absinthe was one of the most popular liquors in the western world. Some companies at the height of its popularity produced over 30,000 liters of it a day. American Chemist T. A. Breaux has spent years researching the drink; through his research he has found that the drink originated as a medicine developed as a digestive aide in the late 1700 s (pg.2 3). The drink then rose in popularity after the 1840 s when the French government would dispense rations of the drink to its soldiers fighting in foreign campaigns as a means of purifying unclean water. These soldiers developed a taste for the drink claiming it to be the drink of a true man, due to its strong bitter taste (pg. 4 5). By the late 1870 s it became the most coveted drink, especially among artist and intellectuals who would feature the iconic drink in their works. Such as Edgar Degas famous Painting L Absinthe or The Absinthe Drinker, painted in 1876 the painting depicts two figures of a woman and a man sitting inside a French cafГ©, CafГ© la Nouvelle AthГЁnes in Paris. Du Bois s criticism of Claude McKay s text seemingly speaks from an essentialist perspective. Du Bois simply found that McKay s representation of black culture within his novel reproduced stereotypical and crude images which white audiences desired in the midst of the Harlem Renaissance. In response to Du Bois, McKay argued that the novel was created for a black audience, but, to delve even deeper outside of Claude McKay s views, it could be argued that Home to Harlem does not produce a single identity at all. Rather, Home to Harlem s perpetual mobility and movement invests in the idea of black identity as production rather than as the exhibition of a collective one true self ... Thus, the picaresque novel employment of the episodic form is vital for Home to Harlem as it allows for the motif of movement to be used for its potential. Ethnic cleansing can be carried out in many ways, such as forced migration, intimidation, and mass murder. One of the most cruel and widespread examples of this was the Holocaust. Germany was angry and embarrassed from WW1, and they wanted someone to blame. Hitler gave them someone, the jews. He blamed them for Germany s defeat.
