Comparing Belgium s Contributions To The Congo During The...
Belgium, a country in europe, was considered superior to other counties in the general area.
Belgium had a lot of advanced technology compared to the Congo. For example, the Congo was
very poor, it wasn t important as a developing nation, however, the Congo did have many resources,
Belgium for example, became interested in the Congos, copper, gold, diamonds, rubber, cobalt, and
many more resources. Thus, a lot of european countries wanted Congo s resources as well, as a
result, twelve nations got together debated dividing these resources equally. These thirteen nations
in europecomprised the Berlin Conference. However King Leopold, the ruler of Belgium, wanted
Africa all to himself. In response, King Leopold said he was going to take... Show more content on

History Of The Washington Monument
History of the Washington Monument The Washington Monument has a history that is more
complex than one may think. This monument is a timeless testament that stands in no one s
shadow, much like the first president it commemorates. The Egyptian like structure is still very
prevalent in today s society with an unique history and many controversial events. The Washington
Monument was originally meant to be placed to the South of the White House, and the West of the
Capitol Building. However, the terrain in the area would not have been able to withstand the weight
of the structure, so it was moved to the East to accommodate. The monument was originally
designed by Robert Mills, the National Mall would have had thirty columns that had statues

Zauner Ornaments -Costing and Pricing
Zauner Ornaments
Costing Pricing
Introduction
Zauner Ornaments was a large manufacturer of crystal and glass products based in Vienna Austria.
The company had an international reputation of producing high quality glass and crystal at
affordable prices due to the skill of its master artisan and using innovative technology in the
manufacturing process. Its product was used in fine restaurants, hotels and residencies around the
world.
Due to slowing growth in the fine crystal and glass tableware markets, the organization has
expanded into producing glass Christmas tree ornaments to take advantage of its Crystal s unique
capabilities. The company leased a small manufacturing facility in Taiwan to produce small glass

We compared traditional volume based costing with outcome of ABC and following findings
reported. Earlier Zauner was selling small glass ,large glass and specialty glass ball ornament at
price of $9 ,$11 and $17 per box whereas price working out by allocating overhead cost using
traditional volume based method coming to $21.12 ,$13.56 and $8.43 respectively . It is
mentioning that management has not adopted accurate method of costing and correct base of
pricing strategy. There is lot of price distortion if Zauner would have been made decision on
volume based cost findings. It means that there are many issues with allocating overhead cost in
various product lines. Here we have carried out ABC method and Findings are as tabulated below:

Religious Language And Non Cognitive Language
Religious language is essentially the communication about religious ideas, faith and belief.
Significantly religious language refers to the terms and phrases we use when discussing God and
his nature; it is an attempt to talk about God using our non cognitive language. Religious language
falls into two categories; cognitive and non cognitive. Cognitive language expresses facts and
knowledge that can be proved to be either true or false. Whereas, non cognitive language expresses
things which are neither true nor false. There is a debate whether religious language is truly
meaningful because the concept of Godis something other and timeless , yet we only talk of things
using our knowledge that is acquired through our sense experience. Therefore, if something is other
and timeless , technically is it not part of our experience and thus how can we talk about it?
Firstly, it can be argued that religious language has been proven to be meaningful. The Via
Negativa , or The Negative Way is a way of talking about God which focuses on saying what he is
not rather than what he is. It is based on the idea that because God is transcendent, we cannot
therefore speak of him. However, we can clearly say what he is not. It s a bit like the game Guess
Who , as once we know what God is not, we can work out what he is. The Via Negativa was put
forward by Pseudo Dionysius in a book called Mystical Theology . This is a good way to approach
the subject of God, since our language is

The Administration Of The U.s. Tax System
In 1990, the IRS commissioned a comprehensive nationwide survey of taxpayers to obtain their
overall perception of its administration of the U.S. tax system. NPM related questions from this
survey were re asked to taxpayers to determine any potential changes in response patterns
(VanDenburgh 2004, 2). Several questions were re asked to allow for an assessment of differences
between the 1990 responses and the 2004 responses during research by William M. VanDenburgh
(2004).
The concept of logic of action, which derives from institutional theory, is valuable to
understanding why the IRS case is not aberrant and why there exists an implicit tension between
merit ideals and the performance paradigm (Thompson 2006, 498). Patterns of behavior derive
from institutional rules that create incentives to act in one way or another. They also derive from
norms that have arisen over time that govern what behaviors are considered appropriate. Important
for the purpose of this argument is the existence of an underlying logic according to which
behavioral patterns, incentives, and norms are interlocked (Thompson 2006, 498). Adoption of a
new NPM requires an agency organizational structure to become more competitive and business
like. In other words, a private market focus is to be incorporated in the organization. The IRS was
heavily criticized because auditors forcefully went after non filers when some IRS employees
themselves were not filing tax returns (VanDenburgh 2004, 91).

James Madison And The Creation Of The Constitution
Instances of inequality, especially in regard to citizenship and voting, trace back to the birth of the
American nation, specifically, to James Madison and the creation of the Constitution. In late 1786,
a Revolutionary War Veteran by the name of Daniel Shays, led an armed insurrection of improvised
farmers who marched on the United StatesArmory in Springfield, Massachusetts in an unsuccessful
attempt to seize weapons and overthrow the government. Colonial elites, horrified by the threat to
their wealth and power, sought to reform the government, concerned with protecting their own
rights. After Shays rebellion, it was clear that elites were the vulnerable minority. Compounding this
rhetoric, the primary architect of the constitution, James Madison, writes: Complaints are

Representation in the form of a republic; the best way to settle disputes between the people and the
elite, is by making the elite the representatives of the people passing them through the medium of a
chosen body of citizens, whose wisdom may best discern the true interest of their country. Madison
even claimed that such an arrangement would render the public voice, pronounced by the
representatives of the people . . . more consonant to the public good than if pronounced by the
people themselves. Madison s fear of the general public, illuminates the intended audience for
Federalist 10, wealthy elites, being assured that their interests would be best served (and protected)
with this Republic form of government, instituted by the Constitution. Therefore, thanks to the
Constitution, the interests of the propertyless, like those of women and children, could be
represented effectively by wise, fair minded, wealthy white

Case Brief of Illinois v. Caballes
Case Brief of Illinois v. Caballes Citation: 543 U.S. 405 (2005) Case Facts: Roy Caballes was
stopped for speeding by an Illinois state trooper Daniel Gillette. During the traffic stop another
state trooper Craig Graham of the Illinois State Police Drug Interdiction Team, overheard the
stop on the radio and showed up to the scene with a narcotics detection dog. While the first
trooper was writing Roy Caballes a warning ticket for speeding the second trooper walked
around Roy s car with the narcotics detection dog. The dog alerted that it had detected narcotics
at the rear end of the car which subsequently led to the state troopers searching the trunk of the
car. Upon searching the trunk of the car the state troopers found a large quantity of marijuana
which consequently led to the arrest of Roy Caballes. The entire incident lasted no longer than
10 minutes. Roy Caballes was convicted of a narcotics offence and was sentenced to 12 years in
prison and ordered to pay a $256,136 fine. Case Issue: Does the use of a narcotics detection dog
during the course of a routine traffic stop violate the Fourth Amendment s protections against
unreasonable searches and seizures? Case Procedural History: Roy Caballes tried to suppress the
drugs seized in the stop by claiming that the state troopers did not have probable cause to search
his vehicle. The trial judge denied the motion to suppress the seized marijuana. The trial judge held
that the use of the drug dog did not prolong the duration

The And Of A Bernoulli Random
Abstract
Abstract here
Humans, and animals, often perceive events as being random. Many lab oratory and controlled
studies have been conducted over the last half century to determine human ability to detect whether
a particular string of events is random. Often, these studies consist of detecting whether some
binary sequence has the properties of a bernoulli random variable. From the re sults of these studies,
we can conclude experimental subjects hold the Law of
Small Numbers (Tversky Kahneman, 1971) to be true. Particularly, many studies have found
humans have a skewed perception of and researchers do not understand randomness. In this paper,
we seek to answer three focused questions: 1. Can randomness be defined, and if so, how can
humans determine whether a sequence is random?
2. What have previous studies concluded with regard to decision makers skill in determining
whether a sequence is random?
3. Are we able to develop a rigorous, mathematical argument regarding randomness? Before we
begin to answer these questions, we will present definitions from the literature to facilitate the
discussion.
1
1 Definitions
Two ubiquitous concept used in studies of randomness are the gambler s fal lacy and the hot hand.
Using the definitions from Oskarsson, van Boven,
McClelland, and Hastie (2009), we will define the gambler s fallacy as the judgement the streak
will end. The gambler s fallacy is also known as neg ative recency. The hot hand is the judgement
that a streak will

Sexual Assault Case Study
Results/Discussion
General Findings From the 186 articles looked in the study, private schools where found to have
the smallest number of articles published. The smallest schools with seven articles is Gettysburg
College. Public schools have the most articles published, with Penn State University having 32
articles published. Topics that were barely mentioned were class year, alcohol and drug use,
policy, and demographics. As a part of demographics, race was only mentioned ones or twice.
Vague Descriptions
Specifics with victim
All of the articles for different type of schools used very vague language when describing the victim
of the sexual assault. Ivy League schools talk generally about the victims in media articles
published about ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The use of age also appears in Penn State University, and Pittsburg University. Since the schools are
much larger, the inclusion of age will not help anyone narrow down who the victim is. While most
of the stories do not give much information on the victim, there are a select few per school that give
much more detail about the victims.
Specifics with Offenders
Offenders also have very broad names. Interestingly if an offender is a part of a sports team or
fraternity they are more likely to be named, for example, Wolfange Ballinger from Psi Upsilon
and. All types of schools also discussed the offender in general terms. The offenders are called,
John doe, guy, friend, trusted guy, football player, soccer team, male, 21 year old, member of
Psi Upsilon, John Doe, and basketball player. Only one of the victims were identified as African
American who attended University of Pennsylvania. Two schools identified actual individuals.
Cornell cited that Wolfgang Ballinger was an offender, who was also a member of Psi Upsilon
fraternity. Ballinger was also president of the fraternity. An example of how news articles from the
New York Times about Harvard use the vague language, It said that in March 2013, Ms. Leader
and a fellow student, identified only as John Doe 1, started a relationship that grew over time to
include contact in which he

Lesbian Gay Bisexual And Transgender Rights
The Umbrella Widens To Cover Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender Rights
The business world is an ever changing environment; there are new laws, regulations, and tax
codes passed all the time that effect how we do business here in America and abroad. It is
important that we keep abreast on those changing laws to protect our companies as well as the
employees that work for us. The last few years have opened up many hot topics of debate when it
comes to rights being extended to the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community. There is
no shortage of passion, no matter what side you stand on, when it comes to same sex marriage,
transgender bathroom rights, legalized adoption for same sex couples, and non discrimination laws
being extended to cover LGBT individuals. While all of these seem like topics that should not affect
the workplace drastically, that could not be further from the truth. A new decision by the Equal
Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), Baldwin v. Foxx, extends Title VII s protections
to cover sexual orientation for federal sector employees and may lead the way for courts to
recognize similar protections in the private sector. The EEOC also now maintains that gender
identity is protected by Title VII,2 and some courts have agreed (MuГ±oz and Kalteux, 2016, p.
43). The job of a Human Resource Manager is to keep up on the changing laws, and to make sure
that the company they work for is compliant in upholding them. While women have long

How Did Roman Roads Build Bridges
Roman Roads and Bridges Introduction
The Roman road system, an intricate network of major as well as minor roads, spanned nearly
50,000 miles, allowed for quick, easy travel and military advantages, and served as a link
between many different centers of population in the Roman Empire. At first, the Romans
developed roads for military use only, utilizing them to gather troops quickly and transport
resources to certain places during wars. Soldiers were even charged with the task of constructing
roads. Eventually, civilians replaced them in this duty and even began using the roads as a means
of travel from one place to another. Sometimes roads needed to traverse rivers and other types of
gaps in the land. It was at these obstacles that Romans ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Due to the costliness of paving a road its entire length, not all Roman roads had completely paved
surfaces. Some surfaces comprised dirt and others were made of gravel. Many roads even had
more than one surface. An example of this is the Via Appia which was not paved the entire way.
Fun Fact! Did you know that paving stones were preferred because of their durability, and the
Romans had two different methods of paving a road? The first method involved shaping the paving
stones into polygons and connecting them together. In the second method, the Romans formed
rectangles out of the stones and joined them at right angles.
Significant Aspects and Features of the Roman Roads
Camber: The camber was the slightly raised center of the road. This made the road useful during
rain and other kinds of weather because it caused water to flow off of the surface and into the
drainage ditches on the sides. As a result, the roads were easily maintained.
Artificial Ruts: Roads were fitted with grooves on their surfaces in order to steer carts in
precipitous and slippery areas.
Umbones: Umbones were curbstones that lay on either side of the

The Importance Of Language Creation
How are languages created? Why are there so many different languages being created? Some
languages are constantly undergoing changes, and some languages disappear fairly quickly. What
determines when a language will emerge and how it will change over time? While the key factor
for language creation is the need for communicationon a small scale among individuals, the
pressures for languagechange mainly come from societal changes on a broader scale.
The need for communication in a small community is the most important factor for and directly
contributes to language creation. It is worthwhile to consider how human language started to
develop initially. When our ape like ancestors started to live together in communities instead of
scattering themselves in forests, a desperate need for communication emerged. Besides the fact
that they needed feet to walk and hands to hunt for food, they also needed some special
mechanism to understand and communicate with others who lived and worked in the same
community: a language (Cen 16 17). Fast forward in history, new languages are often created
under the same spirit. One of the best pieces of evidence we have for how language emerges is in
deaf communities: homesign and village sign language are two of the examples. Homesign
system, a self created system of communication used by deaf individuals who have not been
exposed to a sign language (Brentari 364), is created uniformly among deaf individuals who are
not exposed to any spoken or sign language as a means of communicating with their parents and
other family members. With that being said, homesign is not simply a system of co speaking
gestures, gestures that accompany speech, because homesigners are not modeling their gestures
after the co speech gestures their hearing parents provide (Brentari 366). Rather, homesign shows
certain linguistic properties called the resilient properties of language because they can be
developed without input from a language model (Brentari 366). Constituent structure, for example,
developed among homesigners from the United States, China, and Turkey despite the fact that each
homesigner is developing his or her system alone (Brentari 367). The resilient properties, it is fair to

War, Disobedience And Provision From Judges And Carries...
1 Samuel picks up the theme of war, disobedience and provision from Judges and carries them
forward through God s use of Samuel and Saul. God used them to bring Israel victory over their
oppressors despite Israel s continued disobedience. Through his provision of the judges, victories
and kings, God displayed his omnipotence over the Israelites. Since these themes are carried over
throughout Judges and 1 Samuel, Godis shown to be the same God over his people.
From the start of Judges, war is a prevalent theme. This theme is present in the first verse when
the Israelites asked, Who shall go... against the Canaanites to fight against them? Time and time
again the Lord raised up judges to deliver Israel from the oppression they faced. Even Gideon was
referred to by God as a mighty warrior in chapter 6. Similar to the judges, Samuel was called by
God to deliver the people. According to the New Oxford Annotated Bible, Samuel is depicted as a
transitional figure leading up to the king the people asked for. Saul was appointed the king despite
God s warning that, he will appoint for himself commanders of thousands...to make his implements
of war and the equipment of his chariots in chapter 8. Saul s reign continued the theme of war
present in Judges and 1 Samuel. The Philistines were still a strong force to be reckoned with. The
Israelites were humbled when defeated by the Philistines. As a result, they went back to their roots,
the Ark of the Covenant. God used the Ark to

The Sweetest Place On Earth
The sweetest place on Earth is Hersheypark, and not just because of all the Hershey s chocolate.
It truly is a fun, family friendly amusement park that is worth the two hour drive through rural
Pennsylvania. Hersheypark started as a small retreat created by Milton Hershey for his factory
workers. It was a small picnic site with a little pond where the workers could take a break from
their job. This site sits between the Chocolate World building and the main entrance to Hersheypark
with it s iconic red and white striped mini lighthouse marking the location. The park opened to
the public in 1907 and slowly grew to the park we enjoy today. It continues to grow each year
with new rides added and older rides refurbished or replaced making sure that Hersheypark
continues to please its patrons and continues to live up to its Sweetest Place on Earth reputation.
Hersheypark is in rural Hershey, Pennsylvaniaright outside Harrisburg. It is a beautiful two hour
drive from the Washington D.C. suburbs up route 15 through Gettysburg. Though there are other
local amusement parks that are closer, the drive down 95 to Kings Dominion or up 95 to Six Flags

them standing more proud, revealing their bodies to the camera, with more serious looks. The

Corso was also a writer and poet, popular in the 1960s and 1970s, who, just like the rest of the

Juxtaposition King Lear
Essay Question: Alexander Pope has said that King Lear is a play that centre around opposition and
juxtaposition. Discuss with reference to symbolism, metaphor, motif, plot or character whether you
believe the statement is accurate.
King Lear is about the tragic events and the conflicts between fathers and their children. In the play
King Lear written by William Shakespeare has many motifs and symbolism throughout the play.
Alexander Pope was an English poet who had said King Lear is a play centered around opposition
and juxtaposition. Although there is a parallel story between King Lear and Gloucester, the motifs
and symbolism in this play contrasts from one another in different ways. I believe what Alexander
Pope has said was quite accurate because of the motifs and symbolism that affects one another with
a juxtaposition affect.
Many of the motifs and symbolism in the play are opposites from one another. One of the motifs
that happens frequently throughout the play was loyalty and betrayal. In the play Lear has
three daughters named Goneril, Regan, and Cordelia. This happened in the beginning of the
play where King Lear wanted to retire and give bigger portions of his land based on the daughter
who loved him most. Goneril and Regan praised their love for Lear but Cordelia refused to do
so. In Act 1 Scene 1 (Li 101 102), Cordelia says ...I love your Majesty, according to my bond no
more no less. This indicates that although Cordelia loves Lear very dearly she refused to lie to
get land from her father. Unlike her sisters who have boasted about their love for Lear who they
don t love him to that extent and lies. It seems as if Cordelia is the sign of betrayal but Cordelia
is actually a sign of loyalty because she refuses to love her father in such a way of getting
inheritance where Cordelia wants to love her father in a genuine way. She represents loyalty and
honesty to her father in this part of the play. While Goneril and Regan represents the lies and
foreshadows the sign of betrayal. These two signs are opposites from one another and it creates a
juxtaposition affect. Not only does this part of the play represent betrayal, loyalty, lies and honesty
but it also has a sign of sight. The reason is because

D.H. Lawrence Essay

The Navajos Indians were a peaceful simple people. D.H. Lawrence found this culture a wonder,
and he portrays it in Mornings in Mexico. D.H. traveled all around the world and found that New
Mexico was his favorite place. Mornings in Mexico by David Herbert Lawrence reflects upon the
culture, religion, and other white influences over the people that the work portrays.
David Herbert Lawrence was born on September 11th, 1885. He was the fourth child and he had
two older brothers. D.H. was always second to his older brothers in his mother s eyes, especially
his brother Ernest. He was not into sports like his brothers and he enjoyed hanging out with girls

During their travels to Italy, Frieda and D.H. met a woman name Mabel Dodge Sterne, and she

book as it is in reality. (Meyers, p. 283) D.H. was cautious at first to respond but soon became
excited about traveling to the New World. Lawrence found that his trips to the New World were
the greatest experience that he had ever experienced from the outside world. Lawrence enjoyed the
liberation he felt from the shackles of civilization he had been forced to live in while in England.
The Navajos were a peaceful tribe usually raising sheep and goats. They were nomadic people

Religion played major roles in the life of the Navajos. Their pagan rituals: he writes about the

How Has Social Class Made In My Life
The difference that social class has made in my life is that it leaves no aspect of life untouched.
If I had to rank my families social class, I would consider us as the lower middle class. My husband
and I are the main sole providers in our family and we work for the upper middle classes. We live
off from paycheck to paycheck and we struggle here and there, but we learn how to manage our
money wisely on things that are needed the most.
Social class determines what opportunities you ll have in life. It also determines what kind of
structure values you ll attach with those experiences. For example, if there are two people one

Confounded Study Results Although the outcome proved the NPCT intervention of DSME
education and medical management were effective, something other than the interventions used
could have caused other results but not confounded results. The use of multiple locations and a
larger randomized sample size may have helped avoid obstacles such as time, fuel, cost and
transportation issues and allowed for generalizability. Different outcomes could have been achieved
if individualized education plans were completed separately for the insulin dependent and non

study is the degree to which research findings can be generalized to other groups and settings (Polit

generalizability, the results of the study can be applicable to those within similar programs with the
same disease process (Jessee Rutledge, 2012). In my every day practice, though I work with a
different patient population, the results of this study show the applicability of health education for
family and patients in improving health outcomes. Even with health topics other than diabetes,
health education is pivotal to improve knowledge, self management, and patient compliance. With
adequate knowledge in disease processes, patients can make better choices, maintain their health,
and adequately prevent complications. Though the demographic aspects will be different, the
outcome achieved in this study would remain relatively similar. Collaboration and multi

The Equal Pay Act 1970 is an Act of the United Kingdom Parliament which prohibits any less
favourable treatment between men and women in terms of pay and conditions of employment. It
was passed by Parliament in the aftermath of the 1968 Ford sewing machinists strike[1][2][3][4]
and came into force on 29 December 1975. The term pay is interpreted in a broad sense to
include, on top of wages, things like holidays, pension rights, company perks and some kinds of
bonuses. The legislation has been amended on a number of recent occasions to incorporate a
simplified approach under European Union law that is common to all member states.

17. There are several dimensions to the problem of the wage gap: First, there is the classic case
of a man and a woman doing exactly the same job (whether in a factory or on the stock market

Western Europe, and many countries have outlawed this type of wage discriminationthere even
exists an ILO Convention designed to eliminate it21, dating back to 1951, as well as a 1975
European Council Directive22. But, as several recent studies conclude, even this type of classic
wage discrimination persists in many countries, which prompted the European Commission to
issue a (non binding) Code of Practice on the implementation of equal pay for work of equal
value of women and men as recently as 199623. For example, a Eurostat study of 2003 showed
that the average earnings of women in full time employment in the EU (at that time, of 15 member
states) stood at only 70 90% of those of men. Similarly,

How Laura Kipnis Opposites Depicted In The Break-Up
The Break Up is categorized as a romantic comedy starring Jennifer Aniston, as Brooke Meyer, and
Vince Vaughn, as Gary Growboski. The film portrays what happens when individuals in a
relationship gets comfortable. Romantic comedies are typically funny with a happily ever after, but
this movie was more dramatic than funny. It gives us a glimpse of the actions taken at times to get
the others attention. The Break Up shows the heartache of what happens when people don t

At the end of the movie, Gary said, I m just saying we shouldn t wait so long the next time before

Importance Of Physical Activity And Physical Fitness And...
Evidence from multiple studies suggests that increasing physical activity and physical fitness
may improve academic performance. Evidence also states that dedicated time to recess in a
school day, physical education class, and physical activity in the classroom may facilitate
academic performance. Research shows that cognitive performance and brain health are
improved by single sessions of long term participation in physical activity. The people who
benefit the most are the ones who participate in vigorous or moderate intensity physical activity
during this period. In school, this long term period would be during either the child s recess,
physical education class, or physical activity in the classroom. Through multiple tests, physical
activity and physical fitness has been proved to improve academic performance. One example of a
test used to prove this theory was when a seminal research was conducted by Gabbard and Barton
(1979). This experiment consisted of six different conditions of physical activity (no activity, 20,
30, 40, and 50 minutes) and was completed by 106 2nd graders during physical education. Each of
the physical education sessions were followed by a 5 minute rest and then a completion of 36 math
problems. The authors found a potential threshold effect when noticing that only the 50 minute
condition improved in mathematical performance. Other experiments like this one have also been
conducted to prove academic improvement from physical activity.

Carnival And Calypso Dance
The West Indian Dance of Calypso has a long history. Where its origins trace back to Africa it s
become popularized in Trinidadian culture and becomes the most popular around the holiday time
of Christmas. Since Calypso and Carnival have such strong connections there is some background
information that you definitely need to know. Carnival and Calypso are part of the colonial and
post colonial history of Caribbeanislands such as Trinidadand Antigua. As early as the 18th century,
Africans, who were at the time slaves living in Antigua, celebrated Carnival. They had used these
dances as a form of communication between each other, often times this was used to mock the
slave masters without them knowing. During this time in the 18th century the French planters used
carnival times to celebrate the period as a pre Lenten celebration, which was basically a
preparation period for the coming of lent . (Hughes)
All through these carnivals involved street procession costumes, music, dancing, and feasting. The
culture continued even after the British changed the French as colonial rulers. all through colonial
instances, slaves held separate celebrations. Their Carnival practices included stick fighting,
dancing, drumming, making a song and the staging of quick plays. role playing turned into an
integral a part of Carnival and remains the case these days. Ex slaves masqueraded as White slave

Prostitution In Canada Essay
The oldest profession in the world ; this is how prostitution is often defined or referred to.
However, the reality of prostitution in the 21st century is much more complex than it was before.
With the emergence of nation states and democracy, the question of the legal status of prostitution
became an issue now more controversial than ever. In Canada, this question resurfaced in the last
decade with the Bedford case, which eventually led to a change in laws pertaining to prostitution
with Bill 36 in 2014. While the Conservatives supported an abolitionist view on prostitution, their
bill was severely criticized by the opposition parties and many groups defending human rights.
Thus, a critical question arises: should prostitution be... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, the new legislation is now facing legal challenge on the grounds that it doesn t improve
safety conditions for sex workers, which contravenes to section 7 of the Canadian Charter (Ivison
A1). Still, opposition by the NPD and Liberal Party, Amnesty International and other women s
rights organization was for now unsuccessful in proving the bill to be unconstitutional (Ivison A1).
In order to fully understand the debate created by Bill C 36, we must start be defining some terms
pertaining to prostitution and its legal status. First, there are three main model of intervention when
it comes to prostitution: legalization, decriminalization and criminalization (Phoenix 7).
Legalization is when criminal sanctions are replaced by civil regulation of the contract between
prostitutes and clients, such that prostitution acquires a status similar to another type of
employment (8). Decriminalization refers the repeal of laws prohibiting prostitution without the
institution of civil regulations, such that health and safety legislation become the main regulatory
instrument (8). Finally, criminalization corresponds to the current type of legislation in Canada,
which aims to repress and prohibit prostitution (7). The dubbed Nordic model , or abolitionist
approach, describes a legal approach to prostitution which was applied in Sweden and follows the
model of criminalization, but redefines sex work as a problem of violence

An Analysis Of Anne Sexton s Freedom To Die

Freedom to die
In Wanting to die , Anne Sexton illustrates an analogy that compares her desire to commit suicide
and an addiction. Sexton writes this confessional poem to clearly and powerfully express her
feelings for death and how she perceives it. Sexton is obsessed with death and believes that it gives
her purpose which is why she has to commit suicide. Sexton believes that death will put her to rest
and that she is meant to be with it, as if it were alive.
Throughout the poem, Sexton says how much and why she desires death like how people desire
love. In the first stanza, Sexton talks of how her present state of mind is towards suicide. Sexton is
describing how her thoughts aren t clear ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The narrator describes death as something she longs for because of how death gives her hope of
being at rest. Sexton continues to reflect upon her attitude and behavior to thoughts of suicide.
The narrator says how she did not think of my body at needle point and that suicides have
already betrayed the body (16 18). With this, Sexton emphasizes that her body alienates her. That
her body and mind are out of sync. She wants to die, but does not see the physical signs or
symptoms of the toll death is taking on her. Sexton says that suicide becomes the person it is
affecting. It consumes them entirely, both physically and mentally. And although not all
suicides are successful, the rush from it is as addictive as a drug on its own which is why she
said a drug so sweet (20). In the lines still born, they don t always die, / but dazzled, they can t
forget a drug so sweet , Sexton describes how failed suicide attempts can affect the mind by
explaining how it tends to leave the victim fascinated in awe after one s close encounter with
death (19 20). A suicidal person s first confrontation with death can be closely paralleled with one
s first encounter with a highly addictive drug. Most commonly, this sort of encounter leads one
into a sort of curious state of mind. Like a suicidal person, it leaves them in a position where the

The Disadvantages Of Artifice
Emily Olenik December 1, 2017 Ms. Dolan AP Language The Disavowal of Artifice As a
society we are guided by false veneers and deceit. Artifice is unfortunately a prominent tactic
used in hope of gaining the respect of the public. Politicians and celebrities who we look up to
utilize artifice on a daily basis to gain our recognition and approval. Even teenagers are being
taught how to use artifice to their advantage. Chris Hedges believes that the use of artifice is a
necessary device to achieve success. In his book, The Empire of Illusion, he discusses the
appeal of artifice and how individuals become unreal and ignored if they do not utilize it. His
viewpoint is immensely untrue because this strategy causes a never ending cycle of conflict. If
we continue to feign our true appearances, we will become unable to fix societal issues we face
to today. The celebrities in the media are typically portrayed as people we should look up to and
let guide us. They use artifice to make themselves come across and trustworthy and generous,
when in reality they are just the opposite. One serious problem has surfaced this year regarding
the sexual harassment of actresses in Hollywood. Producers, directors, and other actors have been
using artifice to keep their crimes a secret from the public. One of the most noteworthy examples is
the accusations made against film executive and producer, Harvey Weinstein. Over eighty women
have stepped forward to share their stories about his

Persuasive Essay On True Education
A true education can be defined as enough knowledge given to a student to be successful after
completing school. The purpose of school is to give students this true education, but as time passes,
so must the old ways of accomplishing this. Reformists have made an effort to adjust the education
system to accompany the changing economy and surpass competition, and in doing so, have lost
sight of a true education. The schools of today s society attempt to prepare students for the future
by providing them with basic academic skills; although these skills are handy for doing well on
standardized tests, they are nearly ineffectual for thriving in daily life.
The first time the education of children became serious was in the Age of Enlightenment. During
this time, the quality of education was based on the economy, thus it was a primitive basis of
education. The current education system still runs on some of these old ideas, but in truth, the
validity of these principles has expired (RSA). However, the education system has developed
somewhat, and some aspects of the information taught to students have advanced. Nevertheless, it
is advancing in the wrong direction. The education students receive prepares them for college; it
doesn t prepare them for any other pathway. When we went to school, we were kept there with a
story which is if you worked hard and did well and got a college degree, you would have a job
(RSA). This is a common misconception presently, because some students choose not to attend
college, and they find success elsewhere. The mentality that one has to go to college to become
successful is inapt and was more accurate in the Age of Enlightenment, when those without an
education simply ended up in the factories and coal mine with insufficient wages.
One effect from the changing view of the ideal education system is the pressure on the schools
themselves. With a rapidly changing world, countries find themselves competing for the upper
hand; this includes having the best educated citizens. Hence, the US tries to cram as much
information into the heads of students as fast as possible. The students have only the slightest
understanding of what they learned before they are pushed on to the next subject.

Allusions In The Hollow Men
T.S. Eliot s The Hollow Men is a broad allegory for trying to find deliverance in a landscape
reminiscent of purgatory. Eliot provides examples of allusion and imagery to describe a fully

in five sections, narrated by the forsaken hollow men. The speakers are a paradox stuffed with
straw and empty at the same time.
Before the first section are two allusions: literary and historical. Mistah Kurtz he dead is reference
to Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad. Kurtz was a man who had lost his humanity after traveling
to Africa and succumbing to insanity. A penny for the old Guy is a question traditionally asked by

contemporary America can learn from the past. The period covered by the book spans from 1620
until Reagan s presidency in the late 1980s. However, Meacham focuses on the Founding Fathers
stances and their continued impact on American politics. More specifically, the book details the
conflict over the separation of private religious expression and the more neutral public religion .
One of Meacham s main purposes in writing the American Gospel is to correct common
misconceptions of both secularists and evangelists in addition to moderates. In doing so, he quotes

Although, Meacham notes that it was an excuse to search for gold in a new land as Virginia s
charter instructed the settlers to search for all Manners of Mines of Gold, Silver, and Copper.
Only 3% of that charter was about God (61). While the Spanish went to great lengths to convert
the natives of Mexico, the English did not. Meacham mentions the criminal treatment of Native
Americans perhaps three times and implies that religion was a factor (65). Nonetheless, he does
not linger on the topic and provides no specific details. This is rather surprising considering his
description of Andrew Jackson s era as a time of religious revival and growing nationalism (141).
A time during which Jackson signed the Indian Removal Act and his successor Martin Van Buren
authorized the forced removal of the Cherokee people from their native lands in what became
known as The Trail of Tears. Yet Meacham ignores this completely while instead comparing Jackson
s stance on religion and government to that of Thomas Jefferson. Similarly to his discussion of
Native Americans, Meacham classifies the religious and cultural implications for the faiths and
customs of those brought here in bondage as largely overlooked, but fails to expand upon the topic
of African American slavery and its effects

Belgium had a lot of advanced technology compared to the Congo. For example, the Congo was very poor, it wasn t important as a developing nation, however, the Congo did have many resources, Belgium for example, became interested in the Congos, copper, gold, diamonds, rubber, cobalt, and many more resources. Thus, a lot of european countries wanted Congo s resources as well, as a result, twelve nations got together debated dividing these resources equally. These thirteen nations in europecomprised the Berlin Conference. However King Leopold, the ruler of Belgium, wanted Africa all to himself. In response, King Leopold said he was going to take... This monument is a timeless testament that stands in no one s shadow, much like the first president it commemorates. The Egyptian like structure is still very prevalent in today s society with an unique history and many controversial events. The Washington Monument was originally meant to be placed to the South of the White House, and the West of the Capitol Building. However, the terrain in the area would not have been able to withstand the weight of the structure, so it was moved to the East to accommodate. The monument was originally designed by Robert Mills, the National Mall would have had thirty columns that had statues ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Religious Language And Non Cognitive Language Religious language is essentially the communication about religious ideas, faith and belief. Significantly religious language refers to the terms and phrases we use when discussing God and his nature; it is an attempt to talk about God using our non cognitive language. Religious language falls into two categories; cognitive and non cognitive. Cognitive language expresses facts and knowledge that can be proved to be either true or false. Whereas, non cognitive language expresses things which are neither true nor false. There is a debate whether religious language is truly meaningful because the concept of Godis something other and timeless , yet we only talk of things using our knowledge that is acquired through our sense experience. Therefore, if something is other and timeless , technically is it not part of our experience and thus how can we talk about it? Firstly, it can be argued that religious language has been proven to be meaningful. The Via Negativa , or The Negative Way is a way of talking about God which focuses on saying what he is not rather than what he is. It is based on the idea that because God is transcendent, we cannot therefore speak of him. However, we can clearly say what he is not. It s a bit like the game Guess Who , as once we know what God is not, we can work out what he is. The Via Negativa was put forward by Pseudo Dionysius in a book called Mystical Theology . This is a good way to approach the subject of God, since our language is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. The Administration Of The U.s. Tax System In 1990, the IRS commissioned a comprehensive nationwide survey of taxpayers to obtain their overall perception of its administration of the U.S. tax system. NPM related questions from this survey were re asked to taxpayers to determine any potential changes in response patterns (VanDenburgh 2004, 2). Several questions were re asked to allow for an assessment of differences between the 1990 responses and the 2004 responses during research by William M. VanDenburgh (2004). The concept of logic of action, which derives from institutional theory, is valuable to understanding why the IRS case is not aberrant and why there exists an implicit tension between merit ideals and the performance paradigm (Thompson 2006, 498). Patterns of behavior derive from institutional rules that create incentives to act in one way or another. They also derive from norms that have arisen over time that govern what behaviors are considered appropriate. Important for the purpose of this argument is the existence of an underlying logic according to which behavioral patterns, incentives, and norms are interlocked (Thompson 2006, 498). Adoption of a new NPM requires an agency organizational structure to become more competitive and business like. In other words, a private market focus is to be incorporated in the organization. The IRS was heavily criticized because auditors forcefully went after non filers when some IRS employees themselves were not filing tax returns (VanDenburgh 2004, 91). Due to ... • 7. James Madison And The Creation Of The Constitution Instances of inequality, especially in regard to citizenship and voting, trace back to the birth of the American nation, specifically, to James Madison and the creation of the Constitution. In late 1786, a Revolutionary War Veteran by the name of Daniel Shays, led an armed insurrection of improvised farmers who marched on the United StatesArmory in Springfield, Massachusetts in an unsuccessful attempt to seize weapons and overthrow the government. Colonial elites, horrified by the threat to their wealth and power, sought to reform the government, concerned with protecting their own rights. After Shays rebellion, it was clear that elites were the vulnerable minority. Compounding this rhetoric, the primary architect of the constitution, James Madison, writes: Complaints are everywhere heard from our most considerate... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Representation in the form of a republic; the best way to settle disputes between the people and the elite, is by making the elite the representatives of the people passing them through the medium of a chosen body of citizens, whose wisdom may best discern the true interest of their country. Madison even claimed that such an arrangement would render the public voice, pronounced by the representatives of the people . . . more consonant to the public good than if pronounced by the people themselves. Madison s fear of the general public, illuminates the intended audience for Federalist 10, wealthy elites, being assured that their interests would be best served (and protected) with this Republic form of government, instituted by the Constitution. • 8. Case Brief of Illinois v. Caballes Case Brief of Illinois v. Caballes Citation: 543 U.S. 405 (2005) Case Facts: Roy Caballes was stopped for speeding by an Illinois state trooper Daniel Gillette. During the traffic stop another state trooper Craig Graham of the Illinois State Police Drug Interdiction Team, overheard the stop on the radio and showed up to the scene with a narcotics detection dog. While the first trooper was writing Roy Caballes a warning ticket for speeding the second trooper walked around Roy s car with the narcotics detection dog. The dog alerted that it had detected narcotics at the rear end of the car which subsequently led to the state troopers searching the trunk of the car. Upon searching the trunk of the car the state troopers found a large quantity of marijuana which consequently led to the arrest of Roy Caballes. The entire incident lasted no longer than 10 minutes. Roy Caballes was convicted of a narcotics offence and was sentenced to 12 years in prison and ordered to pay a $256,136 fine. Case Issue: Does the use of a narcotics detection dog during the course of a routine traffic stop violate the Fourth Amendment s protections against unreasonable searches and seizures? Case Procedural History: Roy Caballes tried to suppress the drugs seized in the stop by claiming that the state troopers did not have probable cause to search his vehicle. The trial judge denied the motion to suppress the seized marijuana. The trial judge held that the use of the drug dog did not prolong the duration ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. The And Of A Bernoulli Random Abstract Abstract here Humans, and animals, often perceive events as being random. Many lab oratory and controlled studies have been conducted over the last half century to determine human ability to detect whether a particular string of events is random. Often, these studies consist of detecting whether some binary sequence has the properties of a bernoulli random variable. From the re sults of these studies, we can conclude experimental subjects hold the Law of Small Numbers (Tversky Kahneman, 1971) to be true. Particularly, many studies have found humans have a skewed perception of and researchers do not understand randomness. In this paper, we seek to answer three focused questions: 1. Can randomness be deп¬Ѓned, and if so, how can humans determine whether a sequence is random? 2. What have previous studies concluded with regard to decision makers skill in determining whether a sequence is random? 3. Are we able to develop a rigorous, mathematical argument regarding randomness? Before we begin to answer these questions, we will present deп¬Ѓnitions from the literature to facilitate the discussion. 1 1 Deп¬Ѓnitions Two ubiquitous concept used in studies of randomness are the gambler s fal lacy and the hot hand. Using the deп¬Ѓnitions from Oskarsson, van Boven, McClelland, and Hastie (2009), we will deп¬Ѓne the gambler s fallacy as the judgement the streak will end. The gambler s fallacy is also known as neg ative recency. The hot hand is the judgement that a streak will ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The use of age also appears in Penn State University, and Pittsburg University. Since the schools are much larger, the inclusion of age will not help anyone narrow down who the victim is. Specifics with Offenders Offenders also have very broad names. • 11. Lesbian Gay Bisexual And Transgender Rights The Umbrella Widens To Cover Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender Rights The business world is an ever changing environment; there are new laws, regulations, and tax codes passed all the time that effect how we do business here in America and abroad. It is important that we keep abreast on those changing laws to protect our companies as well as the employees that work for us. The last few years have opened up many hot topics of debate when it comes to rights being extended to the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community. There is no shortage of passion, no matter what side you stand on, when it comes to same sex marriage, transgender bathroom rights, legalized adoption for same sex couples, and non discrimination laws being extended to cover LGBT individuals. While all of these seem like topics that should not affect the workplace drastically, that could not be further from the truth. A new decision by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), Baldwin v. Foxx, extends Title VII s protections to cover sexual orientation for federal sector employees and may lead the way for courts to recognize similar protections in the private sector. The EEOC also now maintains that gender identity is protected by Title VII,2 and some courts have agreed (MuГ±oz and Kalteux, 2016, p. 43). The job of a Human Resource Manager is to keep up on the changing laws, and to make sure that the company they work for is compliant in upholding them. While women have long ... How Did Roman Roads Build Bridges Roman Roads and Bridges Introduction The Roman road system, an intricate network of major as well as minor roads, spanned nearly 50,000 miles, allowed for quick, easy travel and military advantages, and served as a link between many different centers of population in the Roman Empire. At first, the Romans developed roads for military use only, utilizing them to gather troops quickly and transport resources to certain places during wars. Soldiers were even charged with the task of constructing roads. Eventually, civilians replaced them in this duty and even began using the roads as a means of travel from one place to another. Due to the costliness of paving a road its entire length, not all Roman roads had completely paved surfaces. Some surfaces comprised dirt and others were made of gravel. Many roads even had more than one surface. An example of this is the Via Appia which was not paved the entire way. Fun Fact! Did you know that paving stones were preferred because of their durability, and the Romans had two different methods of paving a road? The first method involved shaping the paving stones into polygons and connecting them together. In the second method, the Romans formed rectangles out of the stones and joined them at right angles. Significant Aspects and Features of the Roman Roads Camber: The camber was the slightly raised center of the road. This made the road useful during rain and other kinds of weather because it caused water to flow off of the surface and into the drainage ditches on the sides. As a result, the roads were easily maintained. Artificial Ruts: Roads were fitted with grooves on their surfaces in order to steer carts in precipitous and slippery areas. • 13. The Importance Of Language Creation How are languages created? Why are there so many different languages being created? Some languages are constantly undergoing changes, and some languages disappear fairly quickly. What determines when a language will emerge and how it will change over time? While the key factor for language creation is the need for communicationon a small scale among individuals, the pressures for languagechange mainly come from societal changes on a broader scale. The need for communication in a small community is the most important factor for and directly contributes to language creation. It is worthwhile to consider how human language started to develop initially. When our ape like ancestors started to live together in communities instead of scattering themselves in forests, a desperate need for communication emerged. Besides the fact that they needed feet to walk and hands to hunt for food, they also needed some special mechanism to understand and communicate with others who lived and worked in the same community: a language (Cen 16 17). Fast forward in history, new languages are often created under the same spirit. One of the best pieces of evidence we have for how language emerges is in deaf communities: homesign and village sign language are two of the examples. Homesign system, a self created system of communication used by deaf individuals who have not been exposed to a sign language (Brentari 364), is created uniformly among deaf individuals who are not exposed to any spoken or sign language as a means of communicating with their parents and other family members. With that being said, homesign is not simply a system of co speaking gestures, gestures that accompany speech, because homesigners are not modeling their gestures after the co speech gestures their hearing parents provide (Brentari 366). Rather, homesign shows certain linguistic properties called the resilient properties of language because they can be developed without input from a language model (Brentari 366). Constituent structure, for example, developed among homesigners from the United States, China, and Turkey despite the fact that each homesigner is developing his or her system alone (Brentari 367). The resilient properties, it is fair to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

War, Disobedience And Provision From Judges And Carries... 1 Samuel picks up the theme of war, disobedience and provision from Judges and carries them forward through God s use of Samuel and Saul. God used them to bring Israel victory over their oppressors despite Israel s continued disobedience. Through his provision of the judges, victories and kings, God displayed his omnipotence over the Israelites. Since these themes are carried over throughout Judges and 1 Samuel, Godis shown to be the same God over his people. From the start of Judges, war is a prevalent theme. This theme is present in the first verse when the Israelites asked, Who shall go... against the Canaanites to fight against them? Time and time again the Lord raised up judges to deliver Israel from the oppression they faced. Even Gideon was referred to by God as a mighty warrior in chapter 6. Similar to the judges, Samuel was called by God to deliver the people. • 19. Juxtaposition King Lear Essay Question: Alexander Pope has said that King Lear is a play that centre around opposition and juxtaposition. Discuss with reference to symbolism, metaphor, motif, plot or character whether you believe the statement is accurate. King Lear is about the tragic events and the conflicts between fathers and their children. In the play King Lear written by William Shakespeare has many motifs and symbolism throughout the play. Alexander Pope was an English poet who had said King Lear is a play centered around opposition and juxtaposition. Although there is a parallel story between King Lear and Gloucester, the motifs and symbolism in this play contrasts from one another in different ways. I believe what Alexander Pope has said was quite accurate because of the motifs and symbolism that affects one another with a juxtaposition affect. Many of the motifs and symbolism in the play are opposites from one another. One of the motifs that happens frequently throughout the play was loyalty and betrayal. In the play Lear has three daughters named Goneril, Regan, and Cordelia. This happened in the beginning of the play where King Lear wanted to retire and give bigger portions of his land based on the daughter who loved him most. Goneril and Regan praised their love for Lear but Cordelia refused to do so. In Act 1 Scene 1 (Li 101 102), Cordelia says ...I love your Majesty, according to my bond no more no less. This indicates that although Cordelia loves Lear very dearly she refused to lie to get land from her father. Unlike her sisters who have boasted about their love for Lear who they don t love him to that extent and lies. It seems as if Cordelia is the sign of betrayal but Cordelia is actually a sign of loyalty because she refuses to love her father in such a way of getting inheritance where Cordelia wants to love her father in a genuine way. She represents loyalty and honesty to her father in this part of the play. While Goneril and Regan represents the lies and foreshadows the sign of betrayal. These two signs are opposites from one another and it creates a juxtaposition affect. Not only does this part of the play represent betrayal, loyalty, lies and honesty but it also has a sign of sight. The reason is because ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 33. Importance Of Physical Activity And Physical Fitness And... Evidence from multiple studies suggests that increasing physical activity and physical fitness may improve academic performance. Evidence also states that dedicated time to recess in a school day, physical education class, and physical activity in the classroom may facilitate academic performance. Research shows that cognitive performance and brain health are improved by single sessions of long term participation in physical activity. The people who benefit the most are the ones who participate in vigorous or moderate intensity physical activity during this period. In school, this long term period would be during either the child s recess, physical education class, or physical activity in the classroom. Through multiple tests, physical activity and physical fitness has been proved to improve academic performance. One example of a test used to prove this theory was when a seminal research was conducted by Gabbard and Barton (1979). This experiment consisted of six different conditions of physical activity (no activity, 20, 30, 40, and 50 minutes) and was completed by 106 2nd graders during physical education. Each of the physical education sessions were followed by a 5 minute rest and then a completion of 36 math problems. The authors found a potential threshold effect when noticing that only the 50 minute condition improved in mathematical performance. Other experiments like this one have also been conducted to prove academic improvement from physical activity. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

However, the reality of prostitution in the 21st century is much more complex than it was before. With the emergence of nation states and democracy, the question of the legal status of prostitution became an issue now more controversial than ever. In Canada, this question resurfaced in the last decade with the Bedford case, which eventually led to a change in laws pertaining to prostitution with Bill 36 in 2014. While the Conservatives supported an abolitionist view on prostitution, their bill was severely criticized by the opposition parties and many groups defending human rights. Thus, a critical question arises: should prostitution be... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, the new legislation is now facing legal challenge on the grounds that it doesn t improve safety conditions for sex workers, which contravenes to section 7 of the Canadian Charter (Ivison A1). Still, opposition by the NPD and Liberal Party, Amnesty International and other women s rights organization was for now unsuccessful in proving the bill to be unconstitutional (Ivison A1). In order to fully understand the debate created by Bill C 36, we must start be defining some terms pertaining to prostitution and its legal status. First, there are three main model of intervention when it comes to prostitution: legalization, decriminalization and criminalization (Phoenix 7). Legalization is when criminal sanctions are replaced by civil regulation of the contract between prostitutes and clients, such that prostitution acquires a status similar to another type of employment (8). Decriminalization refers the repeal of laws prohibiting prostitution without the institution of civil regulations, such that health and safety legislation become the main regulatory instrument (8). Finally, criminalization corresponds to the current type of legislation in Canada, which aims to repress and prohibit prostitution (7). The dubbed Nordic model , or abolitionist approach, describes a legal approach to prostitution which was applied in Sweden and follows the model of criminalization, but redefines sex work as a problem of violence ... Sexton believes that death will put her to rest and that she is meant to be with it, as if it were alive. The narrator describes death as something she longs for because of how death gives her hope of being at rest. Sexton continues to reflect upon her attitude and behavior to thoughts of suicide. The narrator says how she did not think of my body at needle point and that suicides have already betrayed the body (16 18). With this, Sexton emphasizes that her body alienates her. That her body and mind are out of sync. She wants to die, but does not see the physical signs or symptoms of the toll death is taking on her. Sexton says that suicide becomes the person it is affecting. It consumes them entirely, both physically and mentally. And although not all suicides are successful, the rush from it is as addictive as a drug on its own which is why she said a drug so sweet (20). In the lines still born, they don t always die, / but dazzled, they can t forget a drug so sweet , Sexton describes how failed suicide attempts can affect the mind by explaining how it tends to leave the victim fascinated in awe after one s close encounter with death (19 20). A suicidal person s first confrontation with death can be closely paralleled with one s first encounter with a highly addictive drug. Most commonly, this sort of encounter leads one into a sort of curious state of mind. Like a suicidal person, it leaves them in a position where the idea of relapse ... • 38. The Disadvantages Of Artifice Emily Olenik December 1, 2017 Ms. Dolan AP Language The Disavowal of Artifice As a society we are guided by false veneers and deceit. Artifice is unfortunately a prominent tactic used in hope of gaining the respect of the public. Politicians and celebrities who we look up to utilize artifice on a daily basis to gain our recognition and approval. Even teenagers are being taught how to use artifice to their advantage. Chris Hedges believes that the use of artifice is a necessary device to achieve success. In his book, The Empire of Illusion, he discusses the appeal of artifice and how individuals become unreal and ignored if they do not utilize it. His viewpoint is immensely untrue because this strategy causes a never ending cycle of conflict. If we continue to feign our true appearances, we will become unable to fix societal issues we face to today. The celebrities in the media are typically portrayed as people we should look up to and let guide us. They use artifice to make themselves come across and trustworthy and generous, when in reality they are just the opposite. One serious problem has surfaced this year regarding the sexual harassment of actresses in Hollywood. Producers, directors, and other actors have been using artifice to keep their crimes a secret from the public. One of the most noteworthy examples is the accusations made against film executive and producer, Harvey Weinstein. Over eighty women have stepped forward to share their stories about his ... • 39. Persuasive Essay On True Education A true education can be defined as enough knowledge given to a student to be successful after completing school. The purpose of school is to give students this true education, but as time passes, so must the old ways of accomplishing this. Reformists have made an effort to adjust the education system to accompany the changing economy and surpass competition, and in doing so, have lost sight of a true education. The schools of today s society attempt to prepare students for the future by providing them with basic academic skills; although these skills are handy for doing well on standardized tests, they are nearly ineffectual for thriving in daily life. The first time the education of children became serious was in the Age of Enlightenment. During this time, the quality of education was based on the economy, thus it was a primitive basis of education. The current education system still runs on some of these old ideas, but in truth, the validity of these principles has expired (RSA). However, the education system has developed somewhat, and some aspects of the information taught to students have advanced. Nevertheless, it is advancing in the wrong direction. The education students receive prepares them for college; it doesn t prepare them for any other pathway. When we went to school, we were kept there with a story which is if you worked hard and did well and got a college degree, you would have a job (RSA). This is a common misconception presently, because some students choose not to attend college, and they find success elsewhere. The mentality that one has to go to college to become successful is inapt and was more accurate in the Age of Enlightenment, when those without an education simply ended up in the factories and coal mine with insufficient wages. One effect from the changing view of the ideal education system is the pressure on the schools themselves. With a rapidly changing world, countries find themselves competing for the upper hand; this includes having the best educated citizens. Hence, the US tries to cram as much information into the heads of students as fast as possible. The students have only the slightest understanding of what they learned before they are pushed on to the next subject. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In American Gospel: God, the Founding Fathers, and the Making of a Nation, Jon Meacham explores the dynamic relationship between religion and government in America in the hope that contemporary America can learn from the past. The period covered by the book spans from 1620 until Reagan s presidency in the late 1980s. However, Meacham focuses on the Founding Fathers stances and their continued impact on American politics. More specifically, the book details the conflict over the separation of private religious expression and the more neutral public religion . One of Meacham s main purposes in writing the American Gospel is to correct common misconceptions of both secularists and evangelists in addition to moderates. In doing so, he quotes ... Meacham mentions the criminal treatment of Native Americans perhaps three times and implies that religion was a factor (65). Nonetheless, he does not linger on the topic and provides no specific details. This is rather surprising considering his description of Andrew Jackson s era as a time of religious revival and growing nationalism (141). A time during which Jackson signed the Indian Removal Act and his successor Martin Van Buren authorized the forced removal of the Cherokee people from their native lands in what became known as The Trail of Tears. Yet Meacham ignores this completely while instead comparing Jackson s stance on religion and government to that of Thomas Jefferson. Similarly to his discussion of Native Americans, Meacham classifies the religious and cultural implications for the faiths and customs of those brought here in bondage as largely overlooked, but fails to expand upon the topic of African American slavery and its effects ...
