even be speaking the same language? Important questions about the definition of a
language arise when temporal shifts come into play. Where is the line between a
new language, and simply a dialect? Were Shakespeare and Chaucer writing in

Washington did? The deciding factor of whether a languagehas evolved past the point
of dialectical variation is mutual intelligibility, which can apply to linguistic changes
based on geography, ethnicity, and, although it is less concrete, time. But this begs an
important question: how can we test this? Because we are relying solely on textual...
If two dialects of a language change enough because of the combination of geographic
distance and time so that the dialect from one region is not understandable by the
people using the other dialect, then the two are no longer dialects of one language.
Instead, they have become two entirely different languages. Although it is, for the
most part, impossible to isolate geography from time, it is possible to isolate time
from geography. The rule of mutual intelligibility still applies: when a language
changes to the point where its modern users cannot understand its traditional texts,

In recent years, a form of performance which relies as much on the audience as it
does an artist has be growing increasingly popular among those who appreciate the
meta. There is a sort of curiosity associated with participating in art and the creation
of art which is refreshingly different from what is often found in performance. In this
paper, I will focus on the audience and their role in watching, thinking about,
interpreting, and changing performance art, I will not be interested in the intention
of any artists. It is especially important to focus on the interactions and feelings
which are formed from attending and participating in performance (even if that
participation is simply viewing). Thus, the works that I will be examining will have
no spoken words because I feel that words serve to distract from the interpretation of

World renowned astrophysicist Carl Sagan once said Exploration is in our nature.
We began as wanderers, and we are wanderers still. We have lingered long enough
on the shores of the cosmic ocean. We are ready at last to set sail for the stars. For
as long as mankind has been able to look up at the night sky, it has been the destiny
of humans to one day travel to and colonize the stars. There are two possible paths
that humans can take as we continue into the future. The first path would be to
remain on Earth forever and risk eventual extinction on a singular planet. The second
alternative path is to become a space bearing civilization and a multi planetary
species (Musk 46). In our solar system, Marsis humanity s best chance at
successfully creating a self sustaining civilization because of how similar it is to

Lack of Free Will
In Joseph Conrad s Heart of Darkness one important theme in the novel is
predetermined fate. The lack of free will that Marlow exhibits points to a driving
sense that he has only one way out of the jungle. Marlow s only mission is to find
Kurtz. Tunnel vision captures Marlow s psyche and his want of destruction is only
rivaled by his need to find Kurtz. Heart of Darknessexemplifies the absurdist and
existentialist viewpoints that reside in literature written before and after human
conflicts. Two other works that support this theme are a poem The Old Sexton and a
modern novel, Fight Club. These works share similar motifs such as a nonlinear
timeline and an ambiguous, unreliable narrator.
An extension of the one way out theme, that all three works share, is the unrelenting
hopelessness that dominates the lives of not only the main narrators but also those
characters to which they interact with inside the plot of each story. The existentialist
question, Why do we struggle? is felt by every central character that exist within
each tale. Humanity as a whole asks this question after viewing the horrors of war

Socrates, Frederick Douglass, And Web Du Bois
In every culture, there are the strong and there are the weak, the oppressor and the
oppressed. Sometimes they are of the same race and sometimes not, but they all
rely on a difference in power. Socrates, Frederick Douglass, and WEB Du Bois each
experience this power differential through the course of their lives. Socrates
experiences this through his experience with the jury of Athens and his trial;
Douglass through his life as a slave and his eventual escape. Du Bois experiences it
through being a black man in the time of Reconstruction and being well of in
comparison to other African Americans at the time. Each man s unique perspective
on equalitycan illuminate why authority is so instrumental in the development of
equality. Certain groups or individuals have the power of authority often because
the larger populace has chosen them. Because of this, the authoritative figures rely
on the general population as their source of power. We see this in the democratic
societies such as the one Socrates lived in. The council that tried Socrates has the
power to do so because the people elected them to those positions. Thus, they must
uphold the law as best they can. Socrates tells the jury that it is not the purpose of a
juryman s office to give justice as a favor to whoever seems good to him, but to
judge according to law (Apology 35c). The juryman must put aside his personal

Perspectives of Success Everybody s views and ideas of success are different.
Some think of money as success. Others think of dreams as success. Few people
may even think love is success. Ideas of success can be influenced by one s values.
Gatsby Daisy have very different views on success. Gatsby is head over heals for
Daisy. Daisy is his epic, romantic love. Meeting daisy for the first time, he had
already knew that she was his future. His heart beat faster and faster as Daisy s
white face came up to his own. He knew that when he kissed this girl, and forever
wed his unutterable visions to her perishable breath, his mind would never romp

If throwing city wide parties, buying a fancy house, and planning a fake tea visit
will get her closer to him, so be it. Having her again means the world to him. Thats
his only goal, his only idea of success. He wouldn t be fully content without her.
Daisy on the other hand, is a little bit different. Her idea of success is stability and
security to where she can be pleasantly happy. She indeed does love and miss
Gatsby, but she also is with Tom and has a security built love for him. Daisy loves
the feeling of security and wealth. That is her idea of success for herself. When she
meets Gatsby again, she feels like he can protect her, he s fun, she loves him and
she misses him, so she thinks she can possibly be with Gatsby but the thought of
telling Tom scares her. When Gatsby and Tom meet, the truth starts to fall out, over
conflict. Daisy sees Gatsby freak out which isn t a good addition with the fact that
he has secrets and he might not have been the guy she thought he was. Daisy will
always love Gatsby, but she needs that security feeling, and now Gatsby isn t so
stable for her with all of his secrets and tantrums. Now is he? Change is also not
