Illiteracy And Poverty In America
I.Introduction: There is a strong correlation between student illiteracy and poverty. 25% of children
in America never learn how to read. Children who grow up in poverty stricken areas have extremely
limited exposure to reading materials. In addition, children living in poverty experience challenges
in obtaining nutritional food and tend to live in an unsafe environment, which can affect
educational advancement. According to the Heart of America foundation, 61 percent of families
living in povertydo not have children s books in their homes. Consequently, children living in
poverty already have a 50 percent weaker vocabulary than their wealthier peers at the start of
school (Hart). Along with the lack of readingmaterials, lacking proper... Show more content on

Taking children on field trips to their nearby library to teach them about the system is very
important. They can later get their personal library card and return to rent out a book they wish to
read. This is a way to promote out of school reading.
III.Conclusion: Maximizing student illiteracy in Miami Dade County comes down to three
critical factors. First, providing students with more books at school. Secondly, giving students
the knowledge and opportunity to read at home. And lastly, giving the teachers the proper
background on the students they will be teaching so that the academics are approached
accordingly. By meticulously approaching each of these areas, Miami Dade County will be able
to significantly increase student literacy in poverty stricken schools. Ernestine Walls Benedict
said, Reading empowers children by providing a virtual passport to explore the world. They can
learn about places, people and things very different from their own experiences, as well as see
themselves reflected in other children s lives. Being able to read is not only important but it is
critical for a person to succeed

Effects Of Slavery On Native Americans
When columbus first found the Americas little did he or anyone in this case know everything that
would happen in the next few years he would rewrite history and change it to how we know it now.
Many people heard about the new land and thought with this new land would come a new
beginning so they started arriving in fleets from Britain to come for the new land and with so
many people coming we needed food and settlers for them and laws. The thing is though the
people who were coming over and going to the south needed workers for farms so they used
natives at first and that didn t work out too well, many of them died because of our diseases and the
natives couldn t fight them off. The native americans also new the land much better than ... Show

The north was okay with it for a while then the learned how the slaves we treated. Many of the
slaves were whipped, beaten, underfeed, not even sleep and overworked. Northerners then wanted
people to stop slavery, this caused the south to get fed up with the north because they had been
doing it for so long and that was one of the ways the got their food supplies and money. The north
and south then went into war to stop the slavery, many people from the south didn t care though
they just wanted to be able to make money and they never cared about blacks life because they
felt superior to blacks. After slavery was officially banned the idea that whites are better than
blacks was what every white felt, this had caused the idea of racism to grow hugely and the idea
of segregation to come about. Many people believed that blacks were lower under them so they
didn t think they should have to go to the same stores or drink out of the same water fountains
for example, so they made two of everything one for whites and another for colored. They gave
blacks no rights and whites would be able to kill blacks out of cold blood and never get punished
but if a black just tried to defend themselves they were ordered to be hung.

Jabberwocky Figurative Language
Lewis Carroll (Charles Lutwidge Dodgson) was born on January 27, 1832 at Daresbury,
Cheshire. He attended the Richmond Grammar School while contributing prose, poetry and
drawings to a series of family magazines. Later, he moved to many different schools. Dodgson
also knew mathematics really well. His academic record and mathematical skills won him the
Christ Church Mathematical Lectureship in 1855. But he continued to publish his works under
name, Lewis Carroll. One Of the most famous Carroll s books is Alice s Adventures in
Wonderland. Lewis Carroll also wrote poem Jabberwocky in 1871. Jabberwocky by Lewis Carroll

natural world is imagery. Imagery means to use figurative language to represent objects, actions
and ideas in such a way that it appeals to our physical senses. It is one of the most important
devices in Jabberwocky . Without using imagery, the poem can be boring, not interesting, and
not even exiting. This literary device is based on visual images. The example of an imagery
could be this line: He took his vorpal sword in hand... (Carroll, 9) The action in this line is that
the boy is taking out his sword, he is getting ready to fight with the natural world, with the
Jabberwock. You can clearly imagine picture in your head how boy is taking out his vorpal
sword . Another example of an imagery is this stanza: The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame
/ Came whiffling through the tulgey wood/ And burbled as it came! (Carroll, 14 16). There is a
clear image of scary monster that wants to attack. Especially notice the words eyes of flame ,
whiffling , and burbled , without them image would be represented bad. Lewis Carroll uses a lot of
imagery to represent the theme of Jabberwocky . This vivid imagining of boy fighting with the
beast helps the reader in picturing human against natural

The Blitz In Graham Greene s The Destructors
Sumi Sunny
ENG 274 OL
Dr. Marilyn Johnson
24 October 2017
Major Paper
Graham Greene wrote The Destructors which is about a group of boys who destroys Mr. Thomas s
house. The story takes place after WWII and explains that Germany demolished London. There are
two things that the story connects to the history of London; one is when Germany attacks London.
The attack was known as The Blitz and shows how much damage Germany has caused London.
Another connection is the movement of the Teddy Boys. The story took place after nine years
when the war ended, and the Teddy Boys movement began around the 1950s. They were known
as rebels and had a reputation for violence. Thus the society blamed the Teddy Boys for many of
society s ill in the 1950s. The history of the Blitz shows how the boys are affected and this is
connected to them because they tend to be rebels and what their response to the world around them.
Graham Greene s The Destructors explained that young people have no hope and promises and
challenges the traditional expectations of them, by showing them to be incapable of finding
something practical in the world around them and within themselves.
The Blitz began in England in September 1940; Germans required avoiding a long war. The Blitz,
also known as the Blitzkrieg is a German word for lightning. The British press applied this word
because of the frequent bomb raids that were carried out over Britain in 1940 1941. The intense
bombing on buildings and citizens started

Mental Disorder In Soldiers
Standing Down Being a member of the United States Armed Forces is one of the most dangerous
jobs in the world. These soldiers face many challenges and the chance of major harm befalling
them on, at times, on a daily basis. They are at risk of injuries that, while not unheard of amongst
civilians are on a completely different scale in terms of frequency and probability. Injuries such as:
amputations, shrapnel wounds, bullet wounds, severe burns, and PTSD are common.
The patients include: gunshot wound (GSW) to the stomach, partial amputations from a land mind,
open fractures secondary to GSW, head injury/ Struck by a tank, blast injuries, shrapnel injuries, and
dislocations (425).

PTSD and other mental disorders such as depression, anxiety, survivor s guilt and many others are
incredibly commonplace in soldiers. Most soldiers suffer with at least a minor case of a mental
disorder. Who can blame them with the terrible things soldiers have to do and see in a wartime
setting.
One trooper confides in me that he witnessed some Iraqi children get run over by a convoy. He
was in the convoy and the had strict orders not to stop. If a vehicle stops, it is isolated and an
inviting target for a rocket propelled grenade. He tells me that some women and children have
been forced out onto the road to break up the convoys so that the Iraqi irregulars can get a clear
shot. But the convoys do not stop. He tells me that dealing with that image is worse than the pain of
his injury (425).
The worst part is that even though so many of our veterans suffer with these debilitating
disorders, very few every seek help for them. Even worse those who seek help don t always receive
proper treatment. Many suffer silently for the remainder of their lives because unlike a missing

Essay about High Stakes Testing
High Stakes Testing
In 1997, President Bill Clinton stated that the United States needed, a national crusade for education
standards not federal government standards, but national standards, representing what all our
students must know to succeed in the knowledge economy of the twenty first century (http:/
/books.nap.edu/books/0309062802/html/13.html). The way to succeed in this journey is through
standardized testing that results in consequences for teachers and students.
Throughout this paper, I will be discussing how important high stakes testing is to our country.
First, I will show how these tests prevent students from moving on to the next grade level or

Out of 91,000 students tested overall, almost 26,000 failed. After summer school, 15 percent, 13
percent, and 8 percent of students were retained at the three grade levels (Chicago Public Schools,
1998a)(http://books.nap.edu/books/0309062802/html/116.html).
High stakes testing also improves students achievement. Eugene Watts, Ohio s State Senator,
discusses a new exam that will be required for high school graduation starting in September of
2004. It is a tribute to the process we have established that Ohio was one of only three states to
receive a grade of A by the Fordman Foundation in its appraisal of math standards in 1998. Ohio s
model math standards also have the highest rating by the American Federation of Teachers and a
grade of B+ for the level of rigor in a review of state standards in 1998 by the Council of Basic
Education. Before proficiency testing, Ohio schools were graduating students with second grade
math skills and fourth grade reading levels (http://www.enc.org/topics/ assessment/testing
/document.shtm?input=FOC 001574 index). The students of Ohio were given a challenge, and
they not only lived up to the standards, they surpassed them! This is the kind of attitude all students
need to have towards school, and high stakes testing is just the incentive they need. The AIMS test
in Arizona will be required to graduate in the year 2008, and the Arizona Department of Education

napping is optional it is still along with sleeping important. Sleeping and Napping are very

Feminism In Persepolis
All women in their lifetime go through an experience that makes them feel proud and dignified to
be a woman. Marjane Satrapi strives to find this feeling of self worth and the satisfaction of being a
woman in Iran as she grows up during her war torn childhood in her bildungsroman, Persepolis.
Marjane experiences both positive and negative moments throughout the memoir such as growing
up alone in Austria, speaking against womens dress codes, and her constant struggle to make her
grandma proud, all which help her learn independence and help form her into a strong feminist
woman.
As Marjane experiences new ideas and culture once she moves to Austria as a teenager, she finds
that there are many things she doesn t agree with or understand. Fitting in as a teenager is hard
enough without having to deal with being stranded all alone, which is exactly what Satrapi had
to endure for years on end. During those years of growth, Marjane ran into many obstacles
including her relationship with boys and smoking. One of Marjane s first friends that she made
while living in Austria was the influence for much of her confusion when it came to social
activities. Marjane was surprised when she attended a party and it was the opposite of what
parties were like in Iran where there was dancing and food, instead people preferred to lie around
and smoke (Satrapi 185). Almost everything Marjane experienced in Austria was against how she
was raised in Iran. Marjane thought to herself, And then,

Analysis Of The Film Princess Mononoke
I selected the film Princess Mononoke from director Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli. The
animated film consists of the genres action, adventure, fantasy, drama, and historical. Mamoru
Fujisawa, also known professionally as Joe Hisaishi, is the sole composer of the film Princess
Mononoke. The music pinpointed the battles that would take place in the film and even
introductions of some integral characters that would have an affect on the story. The music even

The story begins when a prince named Ashitaka had gotten cursed with pain and death on his

losing his status as a prince by cutting off his hair. On his journey, he finds two injured men and

makes sure the men are fine and goes to another town called IronTown. In IronTown, the men greet
him and the women demonstrate their job to Ashitaka and Lady Eboshi examines the cursed
wound that he harbors on his right arm which she casted on the Boar God. Unplanned, the same
girl who drank the poisoned blood attacks the village. Her name is Princess Mononoke and her
other name is San. San starts a brawl with weapons with Lady Eboshi and Ashitaka stuns both of

Why Is The Crusades Justified Dbq
The Crusades were Holy Wars during the 11th century that intended to expand Christian territory.
The Crusades began when Christians initiated military campaigns to take control of the Holy
Lands around the city of Jerusalem. Ever since the fall of the Roman Empire, Christianity had been
so strong that people were able to spread it through campaigning. Different people from the time
period of the Crusadeshave varying viewpoints on it, a few of which being that the Crusades
caused fear and destruction, the violence of the Crusades were justified because of religious
reasons, and that the Crusades were not only harmful to Muslims, but Jews and Christians.
The first viewpoint believed by many is that the Crusades caused fear and destruction. Documents
4 and 5 especially support this opinion. These sources both explain the demolition caused in
Southwest Asia by the Europeans during the Crusades. Document 4, the excerpt from The
Crusades Through the Arabs Eyes, describes the torture and murder of Arabs by Franks. One vivid
description in the source is, The Franks arrived at dawn. It was carnage. As Ibn ... Show more

Documents 3 and 7 support this opinion. Document 3 shows the harm Christians brought to Jews
during the Crusades. The writer of this chronicle describes how heavily the Jews prayed in fear of
the Christians attacks. A piece of information not mentioned in this document, but that is relevant
to the topic, is that attacks during the Crusades on Jews originally started from small groups of
peasants and were condemned by the Church, but soon the Jews started getting attacked by bigger
and bigger mobs. The author of Source 7, is outraged by the attacks on Christians from Crusaders,
and believes it is a violation of the Church. A quote describing these attacks is, the divine body and

Difference Between Latin American Spanish

The difference between Latin American Spanish (LAS) and Castilian Spanish (CS) is something
that is increasingly prominent in the global Hispanic society. These differences lie in the
grammatical, lexical and phonological features of the two variations of both the variant and the
original form of the language. Latin American Spanish, spoken in countries such as Mexico,
Panama, Chile and Honduras all adopted the Spanish language in the late 15th century and have
since made Latin American Spanish one of the most widely spoken variations of the Spanish
language in the world. It is also worth noting that in Spain there are four different co official

Dr. Mary Edwards Walker frequently wore clothing deemed inappropriate by society in order to
support the women s Dress Reform movement. She believed that women should not be confined
to a dress standard and opposed this societal norm on many occasions. She wore a suit at her

Persuasive Essay On The Kneeling Movement
Since March 3, 1931, the Star Spangled Banner has been instilled in almost every citizen in
America as the National Anthem. It is ingrained that every person should show respect to the flag
and the nation. In almost every classroom, students are told to stand facing the American flag
with a hand over their heart and recite the pledge, or during any sporting, event fans are asked to
stand to face the flag as a guest performer sings the National Anthem. This is an American tradition
that everyone is expected to follow. However, what happens when someone decides to sit or take a

Peaceful protesting has been a form of displaying a person s civil rights through the history of
America. There have been several demonstrations of non violent protest and violent protest in
America. For an example, during the Civil Rights Movement, there were plenty of protests that
were not violent such as sit ins, boycotts, and marching. The equivalent to those protest in the
present is kneeling for the National Anthem. No one is being harmed during this demonstration,
it is simply people expressing their civil rights by kneeling for a cause they believe should be
bought in the limelight of America s attention. However, there have been violent protests in
America. In 1963 in Birmingham, Alabama, a riot was provoked by bombings that targeted
black leaders who fought for racial justice by the Birmingham police who were apart of the Ku
Klux Klan. After the attacks, the African Americans in the area began to riot because of the
police involvement, so the bombings were repressed by the Birmingham Police Department.

Fashion Design Essay
In the last few months, I have been studying the market of clothing manufacturing heavily. From
quality to fabric cost, the whole idea of clothing manufacturing is very appealing to a young man
that would like to pursue a career in graphic and architectural design. I will be sharing my personal
experience with clothingmanufacturing, as well as the differences between trade offs and
opportunity costs. A lot of times, people overlook how difficult it really is to establish a
successful brand or collection for a clothing line. A significant amount of thought must go into
this process because of all of the resources that are necessary to take into account. With a clothing
line, I believe that it is absolutely necessary for one to take the economic portion equally, if not,
more seriously than the actual creative direction and design. Fabric is the number one reason for
this. Based on trends of the last few years in street wear , more brands that have a primary teenage
audience have sprouted into replicating the aesthetic of higher end brands because of the shift in
culture that the social media market has cultivated. This caused a boom in the street wear market,
because the cost of replicating a high end fashion t shirtin a country like China, is very
inexpensive. The reason for this has to do with the fabric, and as well as the advertising
manipulation that goes on behind the scenes. See, most of the kids who are purchasing these
replicated high end products, haven t felt

What Is The Mexican Mafia Prison Gang La Familia
The California drug cartel investigation essentially revealed how rooted and connected gang
members are within their own gang, yet, shockingly, this article displays how separate gangs were
able to unite and form relationships with one another.
In generic terms, I guess some may say that gangs tend to keep to themselves (meaning they keep
relationships with only those associated with that gang), group of people with similar ideas and
visions, simply, just up to no good. Interaction with other gangs would merely be for retaliation
purposes, initiation purposes (having to kill a member of a rival gang or some random innocent
civilian). Gangs are exceptionally territorial and the fact that the Mexican Mafia prison gang and

the growth of united national feeling in the country, they decided to follow more actively a policy
of divide and rule and to divide people along religious lines. In other words, to encourage communal

The Pros And Cons Of Tattoos
Society has a lot of say when it comes to things being socially acceptable or unacceptable. One
things that has become more accepted by many are tattoos, the current generation has more
tattoos than most. As a college student with more than thirteen tattoos I get asked this question
all the time, Where do you plan on working? , Do you think you will actually be able to get good
job Do this mean the workplace has become more considerate when it comes to the recent trend
of tattoos? Over the years tattoos were not as popular as they are today. Tattoos were genuinely
for a few specific group or behavior. The image tattoos usually give were associated with gangs,
bikers, rappers, and rockstars. Now tattoos are looked at in a completely different way. They are
a form of expressing yourself, showing your love for art, and the most common reason people get
tattoos is to honor someone or something. According to a similar article, a lot of people who hold
entry level jobs, work industrial jobs, along with high executive positions have tattoos. Now that
tattoos are common for women and men questions are now going unanswered. The ongoing
question in this article is, what is an employer to do when it comes to employees having body art?
Do tattoos speak say something about the individual? (Gross, Barrie. Tattoos in the Workplace:

The Greeks Were Deeply Religious People
The Greeks were deeply religious people. They worshiped many Gods who they believed
appeared in human like form and yet had superhuman strength including ageless beauty. The
Iliad and the Odyssey, were cultures earliest surviving examples of Greek literature that told
stories of men encountering with a variety of Gods and goddesses. Roman Religion was more
practical and less poetical than the Greek religion was however; they both had similar roles and
duties. The Greek religion was more of some ceremonies and big rituals. It included all sorts of
deities including Zeus, Hera, and Poseidon, (Alchin). The Greeks focused their entire life on
pleasing their gods with the exception of wine and animal offerings for the gods. The Romans...

Whereas Rome was divided into four different social systems: Freedmen, Slaves, Plebeians, and
Patricians (Binns). In the Roman society, the women were not treated as insignificant individuals,
as they were in Greece. Women were rather considered citizens, if they were not born into slavery,
therefor they were not able to hold political offices or vote. They were both known for their
architecture and contributions for some of today s society s buildings. The Greeks were responsible
for incorporating three different types of architectural styles: Corinthian, Doric, and Ionic. Most of
the Greek architecture inspired the Romans, who in turn adopted the Greek style however the
incorporated arches and aqueducts into their buildings. Another architectural notation is that the
Greeks chose to use statue figures to honor the human form, while Romans seemed to focus more
on the actual technique and the building design. The Greeks used materials like wood, plaster,
metals, and some marble to create their architecture. While the Romans did use some of the same
materials as the Greeks, they were responsible for the new incorporation of concrete as a new
building material, something the Greeks never had. In Greek class structure only free, landowning,

As most of the ultraviolet radiations are blocked by the Ozone layer, so it was very difficult to
study ultraviolet radiations from earth s surface. In order to better understand the Ultraviolet
radiation an observatory was created and sent beyond the Earth s atmosphere. IUE was the first
telescope that used Ultraviolet technology. Its purpose was to explore astronomical objects such
as galaxies, comets, asteroids, and stars. It weighed 1,420 lbs. and measured 14 feet by 5 feet by
5 feet. It surveyed the sky for 18 years using 45 cm aperture telescope and two spectrographs.
The major success of IUE mission was the identification of exploding star supernova 178A and
comet Hyakutake as it underwent chemical changes for five days. Originally, IUE was made to

Ancient Era Vs Renaissance Era
Great discussion post this week! You have chosen some great artifacts from each era. All are great
advanced designs for each era and truly fascinating to look at as well. Between the Saqqara Bird,
The Morgan Crusader Bible, and The Gutenberg Press you can see each era s culture through the
artifacts and how they do all differ. It is funny to notice though that the Ancient Era and the
RenaissanceEra artifacts that you have chosen are both made out of wood. Even though these
periods are during two different times, wood was still used and carved for both artifacts. This
was something I just thought when looking at the images you have provided. I also wanted to
mention that the artifact you have chosen for the Ancient Era is similar to what I have chosen as
well. I chose the Shabti dolls, which is similar to the artifact you have chosen, although the
Saqqara Bird s purpose is still not really known. Anyway, there are many differences between all
three artifacts. All three are beautifully crafted, but in three different and unique ways for each era.
The Saqqara Bird is smoothly crafted and rather simple where the Bible and printing pressfrom the
other two eras are more detailed and elaborate. You can see the changes in time through the artifacts
and the skills and culture through each. The printingpress is a huge advancement and just goes to
show you the culture during this time period. The bird and the Bible also show the spirituality
and faith and even religion of each era, while the printing press does not. The manuscript that
you have selected is also made and written by hand in this era and the printing press in the next
era shows how all that can now be done by machine. All three artifacts are created differently
because of the changes in each time frame. You can see how the artifacts advance and how the
cultures have evolved as well and what was really important during each era. It seems like in the
ancient era the afterlife was a huge concern and belief for these people, while during the middle era
it has more of a focus on religion and sharing that, while in the Renaissance era it was more focused
on advancements and production created from the printing press. Contemporary human creative
expression can

Analysis Of Goffman s Impression Management
The process of adjusting the self to new environments is described by Goffman as impression
management (1959, p.70). People in their everyday lives manage settings, clothing, words, and
nonverbal actions to convey an impression to others (1959, p.2) like actors on the stage. They
strive to maintain the face they have created in social situations. This process occurs everywhere
in society and provides a clear cut dimension for formal sociological analysis (1959, p.8). Thus, it
can be said that in communicating with others, persons all assume different roles and they act in
the way that suits their incumbent roles. Moreover, behind that performance of the actors, it is
necessary to have a working consensus (Goffman, 1959, p.4) or a commitment between them.
This consensus is formed according to invisible and unspoken norms and rules (such as greeting
and thanking) that members of society follow. It is norms and rules that make everything that
people are doing, minute by minute not natural but socially constructed. In brief, from the point
of view of microsociology, the issue of social order is brought back to the arena of everyday
talks. Within face to face interaction, social order can be seen as a process to co construct and
understand mutual identities between members in their interactions. To maintain order is to avoid
collision (Goffman, 1971, p.6) and preserve the desire for face of self and others. However, social
order, especially in modern society, is

The United Vs Federal Election Commission
Today s American society is plagued by the concept and the idea that the wealthy are secretly
pulling the strings behind every political action and every policy move made by our national
government. The government has preventative measures that prevent obscenely large donations
from wealthy businesses, labor unions, and individuals, right? Actually, that all changed in 2010 in
a court case called Citizens United vs Federal ElectionCommission (Hasen). The Supreme Court
ruled that the First Amendment barred a federal law preventing corporations and unions from
spending their own funds to influence the outcome of elections, which does not sound too horrific
or detrimental does it (Hasen)? Well, as Mr. Donald Trump would say: Wrong! This ruling
allowed for the creation of a horrific creation of what are now referred to as Super PACs. Super
PACs are organizations that operate independently from any candidate or political party. These
organizations are allowed to receive any amount of money from any person or organization,
which they can they allot towards their own support of a political candidate. A good example of
this would be Mitt Romney s Super PAC entitled Restore America, which spent over twelve
million dollars launching an ad campaign that attacked Newt Gingrich (MacMillen). These new
Super PACs have no purpose other than to allow the rich and wealthy to gain leverage in politics
and to push their own agenda by throwing money at candidates. Super PACs and PACs

Therapeutic Recreational Types Of Therapeutic Recreation
What does therapeutic recreation mean to me? Therapeutic recreation is a process that utilizes
recreation and education as a way to enable a being with any type of disorder, mentally, physically
or emotionally. My personal belief is that recreation can be used to help anyone become happier or
more comfortable than they already are. To put it simply, I believe that therapeutic recreation is a
very organized way to help people, no matter the circumstance, without prejudices, or
discrimination, and judgments. It doesn t matter whether the person was born with a disability,
physically or mentally, or even if they were born with no disability and are considered to be
clinically healthy , I believe as a TR representative it is our job to improve the lives of others in
any way we possibly can because if someone isn t as happy as they can be we theoretically can at
least try to help. Although I have yet to work in a therapeutic recreational type environment, I
feel that I have learned many helpful skills that translate from other fields that I can apply to the
field of TR. This past summer I worked two jobs in two completely different fields from each
other and therapeutic recreation. Working at a bar taught me that you need to be patient and
accommodating to peoples needs and wants. I also learned how big of an impact you could make
on someone s day just by doing the simplest tasks. This is especially important in TR because our
goal fully revolves around improving health and

No Face Movie Sociology
Perhaps the best example of the negative views on society come when the character, No Face,
shows up. He is normal when Chihiro meets him outside of the bathhouse. Later in the film, as he is
let into the bathhouse, he offers money to the spirits, revealing an incredible amount of greed from
them. What is interesting is that the spirits were so harsh toward Chihiro for being human,
probably because they used to have jobs as spirits but due to human nature they now work at the
bathhouse. This causes the spirits to then reflect human nature themselves. Again, it goes back to
what man has created, and in the bathhouse the spirits draw many parallels with the business man.
No Face then starts to eat people, and becomes very obsessed with... Show more content on

This can be interpreted very deeply. Chihiro left the door open in the bathhouse for No Face. She
was a human, opening the door (literally) to a seemingly unsuspecting free spirit to society. Society
drove No Face crazy, and his obsession could represent his resentment toward the source of his
transformation, in this case Chihiro, the human. As human caused the problem, Chihiro takes
responsibility for letting him in, and makes the comment that the bathhouse (society) makes him
crazy. No Face represents the extreme end of the negativities in society, such as the rise of mental
disorders, depression, suicide, etc. Chihiro shows the female s ability to empathize, allowing her to
refrain from violence yet still solving the problem. Miyazaki presented the issue, and resolved it in
an alternative way, with a character that is the paradox of feminism

Guidelines And Suggestions For A Recommendation
Introduction
Having a well known and standard process to create a policy or procedure is crucial in an
organization. The lack of one could lead to confusion and hindrance in the implementation of a
potentially necessary process. In many organizations, however, there is room for improvement.
Recommendations and suggestions should be encouraged, as they can aid in the success of these
plans. It is not enough, though, to simply suggest improvements. Action must be taken on the
suggestions, or they will likely remain unchanged. Succeeding this, once a recommendation has
been implemented, and organization must implement some way of measuring the status of it. This
paper focuses on the metrics Organization A uses to measure the success of a recommendation. All
opinions expressed in this paper are that of the author unless otherwise specified. The policy
development process in Organization A is contingent upon what department a policy affects. For
example, if the Accounting department needs to develop a process that handles, for example,
sending a report to a supervisor, then the procedure simply must be worked out within the
department. In this example, the policy may not be written down; it may just be understood and
common practice. However, if the Accounting department found the need to implement a policy
that specified how all employees must handle expense reports, then this must be decided by the
core business unit (BU) leaders.

Pretty in Pink Essay
Pretty in Pink В– Summary
Pretty in Pink is essentially a love story about a girl from the wrong side of the tracks, the rich
high school hunk who has his eye on her, and the peer pressure that threatens their budding
romance. Molly Ringwald plays the character of Andie Walsh, an unpopular poor girl living in the
shabbier side of town. Andrew McCarthy portrays the role of Blane McDonnagh, a wealthy
heartthrob who asks her out to the prom. As their romance evolves, both characters struggle with
increasing pressure from their peers whom are unsupportive of the relationship mostly because of
the difference in social class. This, however, doesn t necessarily hold true for two of the characters
whose objections appear to derive from other ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is a pretty classic high school fight with teachers running out of their classrooms to intervene.
I don t think this scene does have a big modeling effect because unfortunately the kind of
violence nowadays has escalated to a whole different dimension. Long gone are the days where
two kids fought it out one on one with only their hands as weapons. Gangs, knives, bats, guns, or
some other kind of weapon play center stage in most of the altercations today. There is a level of
underlying aggression in this movie, almost like a pressure cooker slowly building until
someone blows. Steff as the bad guy is aggressive in nature, verbally harassing anyone he deems
below him or in Andie s case, anyone who has the gall to say no to him. He is really setting the
stage for Duckie s (good guy) moment of aggression, when exasperated and fed up with the entire
situation, he physically attacks Steff. I think Duckie has just about had it, and although most
blows are obviously in defense of Andie, I think he snuck in a couple for himself (unpopular teen)
too! I would say the justification for this moment of violence comes from the fact that this is
probably years in the making. These teens are seniors in high school, and I m sure anyone would
blow their lid after what was most certainly fours years of bullying. When Duckie glares Steff
down in the hallway, he seems angry but also apprehensive of acting upon his feelings until a cocky

Geico Advertising Appeals
Geico Advertising Appeal Out of the many appeals that companies use to advertise their product
or service, the need to achieve is one of the most commonly seen. In our highly competitive
society, everybody is trying to get ahead. Everybody is looking for that little advantage that will
push them forward. The appeal of achievement correlates with success and winning, ideas that
represent the outcomes of hard work on which people like to pride themselves. In many of their
ads, Geico likes to tap into our competitive nature by offering us incentives, such as saving time and
money, which speak specifically to our consumer culture. Such a tactic proves to be effective
because for the most part, consumers in our ambitious society... Show more content on

This commercial, in particular, is known for its comedic success. The ridiculous camel has
become a viral sensation as it is now considered amusing to yell out Hump Day on a Wednesday.
In fact, the commercial has over 16 million views on Youtube. Ultimately, Geico does a great job
of exposing its overall message about achievement sense the build up to their trademark slogan
is so appealing in itself. If 16 million people know about a camel yelling hump day, then 16
million people know about the time and money that can be saved by using Geico s insurance. Jibs
appeal of achievement is one that correlates completely with our society. We constantly strive to
compete and win while we admire those who reach the pentacle of their field or profession; even if
it is about something as minimal as saving money. Geico, in particular, gives people the incentive to
achieve by offering people them the opportunity to save their time and money, and they respond
accordingly. However, it is not the promise of getting ahead alone that attracts their target audience;
humor, is a fundamental component that is used to grab and keep the customer s attention.
Apparently, Geico does this better than anyone. What better way is there of holding a car owner s
attention then by having an obnoxious, talking camel yell Hump Day! ? That was a rhetorical
question; there is not a better way. Geico is just the

  • 2. Illiteracy And Poverty In America I.Introduction: There is a strong correlation between student illiteracy and poverty. 25% of children in America never learn how to read. Children who grow up in poverty stricken areas have extremely limited exposure to reading materials. In addition, children living in poverty experience challenges in obtaining nutritional food and tend to live in an unsafe environment, which can affect educational advancement. According to the Heart of America foundation, 61 percent of families living in povertydo not have children s books in their homes. Consequently, children living in poverty already have a 50 percent weaker vocabulary than their wealthier peers at the start of school (Hart). Taking children on field trips to their nearby library to teach them about the system is very important. They can later get their personal library card and return to rent out a book they wish to read. This is a way to promote out of school reading. III.Conclusion: Maximizing student illiteracy in Miami Dade County comes down to three critical factors. First, providing students with more books at school. Secondly, giving students the knowledge and opportunity to read at home. And lastly, giving the teachers the proper background on the students they will be teaching so that the academics are approached accordingly. By meticulously approaching each of these areas, Miami Dade County will be able to significantly increase student literacy in poverty stricken schools. Ernestine Walls Benedict said, Reading empowers children by providing a virtual passport to explore the world. They can learn about places, people and things very different from their own experiences, as well as see themselves reflected in other children s lives. The north and south then went into war to stop the slavery, many people from the south didn t care though they just wanted to be able to make money and they never cared about blacks life because they felt superior to blacks. After slavery was officially banned the idea that whites are better than blacks was what every white felt, this had caused the idea of racism to grow hugely and the idea of segregation to come about. Many people believed that blacks were lower under them so they didn t think they should have to go to the same stores or drink out of the same water fountains for example, so they made two of everything one for whites and another for colored. The example of an imagery could be this line: He took his vorpal sword in hand... (Carroll, 9) The action in this line is that the boy is taking out his sword, he is getting ready to fight with the natural world, with the Jabberwock. The Blitz In Graham Greene s The Destructors Sumi Sunny ENG 274 OL Dr. Marilyn Johnson 24 October 2017 Major Paper Graham Greene wrote The Destructors which is about a group of boys who destroys Mr. Thomas s house. The story takes place after WWII and explains that Germany demolished London. There are two things that the story connects to the history of London; one is when Germany attacks London. The attack was known as The Blitz and shows how much damage Germany has caused London. Another connection is the movement of the Teddy Boys. The story took place after nine years when the war ended, and the Teddy Boys movement began around the 1950s. They were known as rebels and had a reputation for violence. Thus the society blamed the Teddy Boys for many of society s ill in the 1950s. The history of the Blitz shows how the boys are affected and this is connected to them because they tend to be rebels and what their response to the world around them. Graham Greene s The Destructors explained that young people have no hope and promises and challenges the traditional expectations of them, by showing them to be incapable of finding something practical in the world around them and within themselves. • 31. Ancient Era Vs Renaissance Era Great discussion post this week! You have chosen some great artifacts from each era. All are great advanced designs for each era and truly fascinating to look at as well. Between the Saqqara Bird, The Morgan Crusader Bible, and The Gutenberg Press you can see each era s culture through the artifacts and how they do all differ. It is funny to notice though that the Ancient Era and the RenaissanceEra artifacts that you have chosen are both made out of wood. Even though these periods are during two different times, wood was still used and carved for both artifacts. This was something I just thought when looking at the images you have provided. I also wanted to mention that the artifact you have chosen for the Ancient Era is similar to what I have chosen as well. I chose the Shabti dolls, which is similar to the artifact you have chosen, although the Saqqara Bird s purpose is still not really known. Anyway, there are many differences between all three artifacts. All three are beautifully crafted, but in three different and unique ways for each era. The Saqqara Bird is smoothly crafted and rather simple where the Bible and printing pressfrom the other two eras are more detailed and elaborate. You can see the changes in time through the artifacts and the skills and culture through each. The printingpress is a huge advancement and just goes to show you the culture during this time period. The bird and the Bible also show the spirituality and faith and even religion of each era, while the printing press does not. The manuscript that you have selected is also made and written by hand in this era and the printing press in the next era shows how all that can now be done by machine. All three artifacts are created differently because of the changes in each time frame. You can see how the artifacts advance and how the cultures have evolved as well and what was really important during each era. It seems like in the ancient era the afterlife was a huge concern and belief for these people, while during the middle era it has more of a focus on religion and sharing that, while in the Renaissance era it was more focused on advancements and production created from the printing press. Contemporary human creative expression can ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 32. Analysis Of Goffman s Impression Management The process of adjusting the self to new environments is described by Goffman as impression management (1959, p.70). People in their everyday lives manage settings, clothing, words, and nonverbal actions to convey an impression to others (1959, p.2) like actors on the stage. They strive to maintain the face they have created in social situations. This process occurs everywhere in society and provides a clear cut dimension for formal sociological analysis (1959, p.8). Thus, it can be said that in communicating with others, persons all assume different roles and they act in the way that suits their incumbent roles. Moreover, behind that performance of the actors, it is necessary to have a working consensus (Goffman, 1959, p.4) or a commitment between them. This consensus is formed according to invisible and unspoken norms and rules (such as greeting and thanking) that members of society follow. It is norms and rules that make everything that people are doing, minute by minute not natural but socially constructed. In brief, from the point of view of microsociology, the issue of social order is brought back to the arena of everyday talks. Within face to face interaction, social order can be seen as a process to co construct and understand mutual identities between members in their interactions. To maintain order is to avoid collision (Goffman, 1971, p.6) and preserve the desire for face of self and others. However, social order, especially in modern society, is ... • 34. The United Vs Federal Election Commission Today s American society is plagued by the concept and the idea that the wealthy are secretly pulling the strings behind every political action and every policy move made by our national government. The government has preventative measures that prevent obscenely large donations from wealthy businesses, labor unions, and individuals, right? Actually, that all changed in 2010 in a court case called Citizens United vs Federal ElectionCommission (Hasen). The Supreme Court ruled that the First Amendment barred a federal law preventing corporations and unions from spending their own funds to influence the outcome of elections, which does not sound too horrific or detrimental does it (Hasen)? Well, as Mr. Donald Trump would say: Wrong! This ruling allowed for the creation of a horrific creation of what are now referred to as Super PACs. Super PACs are organizations that operate independently from any candidate or political party. These organizations are allowed to receive any amount of money from any person or organization, which they can they allot towards their own support of a political candidate. A good example of this would be Mitt Romney s Super PAC entitled Restore America, which spent over twelve million dollars launching an ad campaign that attacked Newt Gingrich (MacMillen). These new Super PACs have no purpose other than to allow the rich and wealthy to gain leverage in politics and to push their own agenda by throwing money at candidates. Super PACs and PACs ... • 35. Therapeutic Recreational Types Of Therapeutic Recreation What does therapeutic recreation mean to me? Therapeutic recreation is a process that utilizes recreation and education as a way to enable a being with any type of disorder, mentally, physically or emotionally. My personal belief is that recreation can be used to help anyone become happier or more comfortable than they already are. To put it simply, I believe that therapeutic recreation is a very organized way to help people, no matter the circumstance, without prejudices, or discrimination, and judgments. It doesn t matter whether the person was born with a disability, physically or mentally, or even if they were born with no disability and are considered to be clinically healthy , I believe as a TR representative it is our job to improve the lives of others in any way we possibly can because if someone isn t as happy as they can be we theoretically can at least try to help. Although I have yet to work in a therapeutic recreational type environment, I feel that I have learned many helpful skills that translate from other fields that I can apply to the field of TR. This past summer I worked two jobs in two completely different fields from each other and therapeutic recreation. Working at a bar taught me that you need to be patient and accommodating to peoples needs and wants. I also learned how big of an impact you could make on someone s day just by doing the simplest tasks. This is especially important in TR because our goal fully revolves around improving health and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Later in the film, as he is let into the bathhouse, he offers money to the spirits, revealing an incredible amount of greed from them. What is interesting is that the spirits were so harsh toward Chihiro for being human, probably because they used to have jobs as spirits but due to human nature they now work at the bathhouse. The lack of one could lead to confusion and hindrance in the implementation of a potentially necessary process. In many organizations, however, there is room for improvement. Recommendations and suggestions should be encouraged, as they can aid in the success of these plans. It is not enough, though, to simply suggest improvements. Action must be taken on the suggestions, or they will likely remain unchanged. Succeeding this, once a recommendation has been implemented, and organization must implement some way of measuring the status of it. This paper focuses on the metrics Organization A uses to measure the success of a recommendation. All opinions expressed in this paper are that of the author unless otherwise specified. The policy development process in Organization A is contingent upon what department a policy affects. For example, if the Accounting department needs to develop a process that handles, for example, sending a report to a supervisor, then the procedure simply must be worked out within the department. In this example, the policy may not be written down; it may just be understood and common practice. However, if the Accounting department found the need to implement a policy that specified how all employees must handle expense reports, then this must be decided by the core business unit (BU) leaders.
