Environmental and sustainability considerations for very large systems
As mentioned above, the demand for faster and smaller devices with higher
performance is increasing. However with increasing devices, there is increase in
data generated. Large companies like google, amazon, Microsoft and many others
generate huge amounts of data which is stored in large storage centres called Data
centres. It is estimated that by 2020, around 35 zettabytes of data will be generated
every year [6]. To store and manage such large data, huge data centres are required.
However there are many challenges faced while operation of these datacentres.
One of the challenges faced by the data centres is land occupied by these data
centres. Due to increasing amounts of data, larger and more number of data
centres are being built. For example, one of the largest data centre by digital realty
occupies 1.1 million ft2 of land and require 53 generators [6]. It is estimated that by
2017 there will be around 8.6 million data centres around the world and although the
numbers might decrease after 2017, the space occupied will increase. Data centre
swill occupy around 1.94 billion ft2 by 2018 [7].
Second and the most important challenge faced by the companies are the amount of
energy required to manage data centres. All the data centres around the world use
around 30 billion watts of energy on average, which is equal to output by 30 nuclear
power plants [6]. By 2020 it is expected that, US datacentres

Color Vision in Spider Monkeys
Objective:
To determine the color vision abilities of four individual spider monkeys (Ateles
geoffroyi). Certain New World monkeys, such as spider monkeys, vary in the types
of color they can see. Furthermore, the color vision abilities of these monkeys vary
among individuals due to the differing genetics of males, who have dichromatic
vision and certain females who have trichromatic vision similar to humans (Regan
et al., 2005). Additionally, only one behavioral study has been conducted with
spider monkeys to test their color vision abilities (Ateles fusciceps and Ateles
belzebuth; Blakeslee Jacobs, 1982). However, with a sample size of only two spider
monkeys who were a different species than the spider monkeys housed at the zoo, this
research should be reinvestigated. Ultimately, the implications of the study will give
us more insight into spider monkey color vision and increase opportunities for
improved environmental enrichment for animals based on their individual color
abilities.
Procedure: We will use a match to sample paradigm to test color vision. In the match
to sample paradigm, animals are presented with a ... Show more content on

Initially, the animal will not be asked to discriminate between two boxes, but rather
just touch the only box presented to them after the delay. Once the animal learns
touching the box presented to them after the delay leads to reinforcement, we will
begin to present two boxes of differing color to the animals. In order to gain
reinforcement at this stage of training, the animal must be able to correctly
discriminate color based on the sample they just previously saw. Due to an absence
of other studies to access information from, I am uncertain of how many sessions it
will take before this behavior is fully
The Effect Of Second World War On Women
War has always been a catalyst for change, whether that means in terms of politics,
economy, or even individual lives. Throughout the course of wars that occurred
within America, or been associated with America, change has been brought or was a
major recurring effect. It can be even said that war is essentially fought for change or
development. The Second World War was no exception, having an overwhelming
impact on the United Statesduring the time. The war affected all phases of American
life, even though no battles occurred on mainland America. It required
groundbreaking efforts to coordinate strategy and tactics with other members of the
Grand Alliance and then to plunge into battle against the Axis powers Germany, Italy,
and Japan. At... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They had fought against totalitarian dictatorships for democratic ideals and they

big business and solidified military industrial links. It brought about permanent
demographic change. For groups discriminated against in the past, the war was a

The Necklace Dishonest
In the story ВЁThe NecklaceВЁ by Guy de Maupassant Mme. Loisel ends up
losing her friends necklace and has to buy her a new one. She has many
misfortunes and blames them all on her friend, Mme. Forestier. She does not take
her own responsibilities by blaming it on other people instead of herself. Mme.
Loisel does not tell Mme. Forestier about the lost necklace, she instead lies to her
about it by saying she will return it soon. In the story, it is also clear that Mme.
Loisel s husband buys her an invitation and is unhappy because she has nothing to
wear. This shows that Mme. Loisel is ungrateful, irresponsible, and dishonest Mme.
Loisel had many misfortunes because of the diamond necklace. She did not take any

Examples Of Gross Profit Costings
Based on the ABC data below are the gross profit margins for each product produced.
ABC is short for activity based costing. Companies follow a two stage process when
allocating indirect costs using ABC. The first stage entails assigning costs to pools
based on the activities that cause the costs to be incurred. The second stage involves
allocating the costs in the activity costs pools to products through the use of a variety
of cost drivers. Furthermore, activity based costing generates a suitable allocation
since it disperses the applicable overhead costs to the appropriate products. Also, it
enhances precision in ascertaining the costs of products and services. Therefore, it
calls attention to the need to acquire a better ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

With the ABC system, there is a variety of cost drivers used. Thus, a different cost
driver is used for each category of overhead cost. Furthermore, with the ABC
system, a larger amount of overhead costs are allocated to OS 367. Therefore, since
OS 367 utilizes greater proportions of some of the resources than other products, the
overhead costs for those categories are allocated to OS 367 in larger amounts.
Hence, the total overhead cost per unit increased for OS 367 (Edmonds et al., 2011).
Furthermore, traditional costing does not classify the specific overhead charges or
resource used to fabricate a specific product and distributes costs by assigning
average overhead rates. However, ABC categorizes specific activities employed for
producing each individual product and allocates them based on their consumption of
resources. Drilling Innovations used traditional costing, which in turn, caused them
to assign overhead based on machine hours and ignore other overhead activities
used to produce each product. However, by using ABC, the costs were allocated
based on the activities used to produce each individual drilling head. Therefore, the
cost was more accurately spread based on the overhead consumption of each product
individually. Costs that were incurred to produce OS 367 were being allocated to GS
157 and HS 241 with the traditional costing method. Once
The Body Shop Sociology
Here is a quick and present scenario: Two children, a boy and a girl, are watching
television together. In the show they are watching, the father figure is off working
a fantastic job and virtually becoming a superhero to his son, while the wife
remains nothing more than a housewife, which seems to be her only reason for
existing on the show. While the time frame the woman appears on the show is
small, it manages to have a sociological impact on the children. The company The
Body Shop observes this impact with a billboard questioning the lack of dominance
for women in media. The Body Shop displays an advertisement meant for the
socially unaware. However, when examined closely, this is not the case. Looking at
the image, it displays two children, one male and one female. The boy is... Show

The image manipulates its viewers without their knowledge. The problem in the
image lies visually. English readers read from left to right, making the boy the first
child they see after reading the words Meet Alex... , so that they automatically
assume that Alex is the boy while their brains are interpreting this information.
Ironically enough, the girl in the advertisement is smaller and less noticeable,
which portrays the same stereotype the shop is trying to destroy. If the image had
the boy and girl set as equals, only then would the viewers have a reason for feeling
remorseful about their internalized misogyny. Some viewers of the image might
even feel resentful towards the image and realize how it distorts their frame of
reference, which can lead to harsh feelings about the feminist movement. While the
image may help bring others to look into feminism, it can also push others away
from it, which the movement does not need. It is hardly fair of the board to make
viewers believe they are sexist when the image is set up to make sure the
interpretation will go a specific

HSBC, as with other banks, took advantage of many poor consumers looking to
own their own home. These consumers had low credit scores, are in default or have
low income, which means there was a higher probability of them not paying back

When you have lenders not collecting the right information on consumers to help
predict if they are able to pay the loan or not and not explaining the loan correctly

they just knew they would become homeowners. Subprime loans are the worst, to

song he talks about how in society today everyone is obsessed with money and
gaining status. Money is the main focus which is what makes the song title so clever.
The double meaning goes with the theme of his entire new album.
The double meaning of ATM stands for At The pp

money rules the world around us at this point in time. He give an insightful view on
how people view money and the need for money today. The beginning of the chorus
of the song, count it up, count it up, count it up, count it refers to how people will
spend so much time making money their main goal and just spend so much
Medieval Castles In Medieval Times
Medieval castles In the medieval times castles were super important. They were
used/known for many things. But one of the main things were that they used to
symbolize the status. They usually belonged to wealthy people like kings, nobles,
and knights. They used to symbolize you during war and peace. But also seats of
local powers and justice. These castles were built to be strong and difficult to
attack, but easy to defend. They were difficult to attack because they had huge
walls between 15 to 20 feet thick. Also they attacked buttresses which were a outer
thick layer on the wall so no weapon could go through. In these castles evn the
things that look like no use come in real handy, like the tower and keeps. These were

Earl Warren s Impact On American Society
Nearly 100 years after the emancipation of slaves, African Americans still
experienced the brutality of discrimination and various forms of oppression. Jim
Crow laws and Black Codes during the 1890 s, segregated public facilities and
increased tensions between races. Individuals like 36th President Lyndon B. Johnson,
and Chief Justice Earl Warren, attempted to address civil right issues within American
society. Their important contributions led to an increase in rights and equality among
all Americans.
As a justice, Earl Warren s rulings overturned many laws and expanded individual
rights. A significant court case Warren dealt with was Brown vs Board of Ed. It
involved a girl named Linda Brown who had to walk through dangerous pathways
to get to her all black elementary school. She could not go to an elementary school
five minutes away from her house because it was segregated. Brown s family took
the case to court and declared that the segregation of schools, was a violation of their
14th amendment. In his decision, Earl Warren decided that separate educational
facilities are inherently unequal and not just in society. He overturned a ... Show more

Johnson, had also tried to resolve and diminish problems of prejudice. Johnson
passed the Civil Rights Act of 1964 which banned discrimination based on race,
gender , and religion in all public places. This Act re enforced the 14th amendment,
and played a huge role in achieving rights among African Americans. Another Act he
passed was the Voting Rights Act of 1965, which guaranteed equal voting rights to
African Americans. Not only did these acts increase individual rights, many
Americans have used it to challenge discrimination and harassment based on race,
religion, gender etc. The promise of equality among all Americans sparked the Civil
Rights Movement in the 1960 s. Activists had the ability to protest their civil rights

Carolina College Essay
Growing up in South Carolina, there is a lot heard about the Clemson Tigers and
the South Carolina Gamecocks. The biggest college football rivalry of the State.
There are commercials, billboards, and flyers that advertise the big game every year.
The amount of people that show up to the game is incredible. Thousands of people
go to watch these college players duke it out to prove that their college is better than
the other. The event brings in thousands of dollars, yet what most do not understand
is that the same athletes who are bringing in the money aren t getting paid to do their
jobs. South Carolinacollege athletes should have some type of compensation for

Jadeveon Clowney, a National Football League and former University of South
Carolina athlete, also believes that the athletes should get some form of
compensation for the money they bring in for the schools. CBS Sports reported,
Unsurprisingly, Clowney also believes that college athletes should be paid and
told Rome as much. I think so, Clowney said. They are selling our jerseys with our
numbers and making money off of ticket sales so I think college athletes should get
paid. ... he certainly has a good case for wanting to receive some compensation for
generating so much money for his school. (Brinson). Given from the numbers of the
revenue, one may say that the University of South Carolina could afford to put aside
at least fifty percent, of the twenty one million dollars made off of ticket sales, to
give college athletes stipends.
Athletes would also possibly stay longer if they were paid. This could be
beneficial to both the player and the college. If an athlete is good enough to play a
pro sport, then they are more likely to only play one year in college due to the one
and done rule. The one and done rule states that a professional athlete must play at
least one year, in college or overseas, before they are able to play a professional sport.
Since athletes aren t getting paid in college, some athletes leave after their first year
in order to support their families. Jadeveon Clowney
The Ethics Of The Patient
One of the essential qualities of the clinician is interest in humanity, for the secret of
the care of the patient is in caring for the patient Francis F Peabody. As I continued
my journey in internal medicine and hematology, I realized that ethical practice and
empathy are the essence of medicine every single day.
My interest in Internal Medicine developed during my 12 month long internship at
Dhaka Medical College Hospital, the largest teaching hospital serving patients
with all types of medical complaints from all over Bangladesh. Each admission day,
I was enthralled by the diversity of problems and the complexity of clinical
presentations of the diseases. Because Internal Medicine deals with diseases
involving all organ systems of human body, it requires a vast yet, in depth clinical
knowledge and diagnostic acumen. I found it intensely satisfying for an intelligent
and inquisitive mind to formulate a list of differentials for any presenting complaint
and deduce one final diagnosis using clinical and laboratory clues. Even more
rewarding was developing relationships with the patients as I cared for them from
admission to discharge. I remember how Mr. K s face lit up when I said, Ah! You
and your grandson have the same birthday, right?
My favorite Internal Medicine rotation, however, was in the hematology
department. To me it was a blend of basic science and clinical medicine including
critical care, infectious disease and palliative care. I noticed the
The Fatah And The Arab Nationalist Movement
The PFLP is Fatah s primary rival within the PLO and claims to offer a
fundamentally different ideological and organizational approach in achieving
Palestinian goals. Founded in late 1967, the PFLP has its roots in the Arab
Nationalist Movement (ANM) and in the political styles of its own principle
founders, George Habash and Wadi Haddad both from Greek Orthodox Christian
backgrounds. The Arab Nationalist Movement particularly attracted to Christians,
who saw a secular ideology based on Arab unity as a way to equalize their status in a
predominately Muslim world and to shape out a special niche for themselves within
the Palestinian resistance movement. Unlike Fatah, the PFLP soon adopted a Marxist
oriented approach, which it believed to be

Financial benchmarking involves running a financial analysis and making a
comparison of the results in order to assess a company s overall competitiveness,
efficiency and productivity.
The information gained from such a comparison allows firms to determine how well
they perform in comparison with the best and, in turn, develop new and better
strategies to work towards making improvements or adopting certain best practices.
Benchmarking is usually an ongoing process in which companies continuously seek
the improvement of their practices. (Debitoor, 2017)
Trend analysis reviews past data and tries to predict the future . A ratio analysis is a
quantitative analysis of information contained in a company s financial statements.
Ratio analysis is based on line items in financial statements like the balance sheet,
income statement and cash flow statement; the ratios of one item or a combination of
items to another item or combination are then calculated. Ratio analysis is used to
evaluate various aspects of a company s operating and financial performance such as
its efficiency, liquidity, profitability and solvency. The trend of these ratios over time
is studied to check whether they are improving or deteriorating. (https:/

Ponyboys Maturity
Confidence comes with maturity, being more accepting of yourself. Nicole
Scherzinger. Throughout the novel Ponyboy develops a new level of maturity. He
discovers that there is more in life other than his viewpoint. He learns how to get
through the tough times. He learns who to look to for help and guidance. Ponyboy
most importantly learns that he must stay gold. Stay gold, Ponyboy. Stay gold...
(Hinton, pg 148) To me this quote means that Ponyboy should stay true to the kind,
sensitive, and cautious person that he really is deep down inside of him. One of the
ways that Ponyboy matured through the novelis through his friendships. One of the
friendships that matured the most was Ponyboy s friendship with Dally. When the
book started Ponyboy admired Dally. Ponyboy admired that Dally was brave and
risky. Dally knew what to do in every situation because he had experience from all
of the times he had gotten in trouble himself. Ponyboy especially admired this
when he and Johnny were in a pickle and needed help. Ponyboy then slowly
throughout the novel realizes who Dally really is. Don t you know a rumble ain t a
rumble without me? (Hinton, pg. 126). Dally is really a thief who causes trouble and
isn t trusted by many people. He is selfish and the only person he truly loved was
Johnny. When Ponyboy slowly came to these realizations, I think he might have
been slightly disappointed. I believe this because when you truly look up to
someone and you realize their real character, you feel let down or upset at yourself.
Ponyboy, even though upset, still had Dally s back because no matter what Dally
did the Greasers had each other s backs. Ponyboy s mind, immensely shut, didn t
accept the fact that not all Soc s were bad until a little bit later in the book. He then
realizes that the Soc s are also just humans who have just as many harsh problems
as the Greasers. He then is proven this when he meet Cherry. Cherry is a Soc who is
kind, witty, and watches the same sunset that Ponyboy does. They end up sharing an
immense amount of things in common, and get along well. Ponyboy then takes a
couple of steps back and awe s at that fact that even though Cherry is a Soc she is not
mean but instead pleasant to be around.
Self Awareness And Self-Knowledge In Relationships
Self awareness and self knowledge in relationships What self knowledge? It can
not be bought at the price of effort or practice. Self knowledge happens by
observing yourself in your relationship with your classmates, your teachers and all
those around you; it happens when you observe the ways of the other, his gestures,
his way of dressing, talking, contempt or flattery, and your reaction; it happens
when you observe everything that is happening in you and around you and you
see as clearly as you see your face in the mirror. When you look in the mirror, you
see yourself as you are, is not it? You may wish to have another head having
another form, with a little more hair, a less ugly face, but the facts are there,
clearly reflected by the mirror, and you can not sweep them and say, That I am
beautiful! If you can look in the mirror of relationship exactly as you do in an
ordinary mirror, then self knowledge is endless. It s like walking into an
unfathomable ocean without shores. Now we want mostly to an end, we want to be
able to say, I have come to the knowledge of me and I m happy. But things are not
happening as well. If you can look without condemning what you see without
comparing yourself to others, without wishing to be more beautiful or more virtuous,
if you can just watch what you are and continue on your way, you will discover that
it is possible to go infinitely far. So the journey is endless and there is the mystery,
the beauty of the thing. What is

Abstract
Hamilton (Albert) Fish (1870 1936) was an American serial killer, child rapist, and
cannibal. He was known as the gray man, the werewolf of wisteria, the Brooklyn
vampire, the moon maniac, and the boogey man. Albert (born Hamilton) Fish came
from a family seemingly stricken by mental illness, with six close relative in
mental hospitals. At the age nine his father died, and Fish was sent to an orphanage.
At that point Fish experienced bullying, and whippings from caretakers. It wasn t
until three years later that his mother took on a government job and was able to
take him back. He began a relationship with another boy, where he was introduced to
urine drinking and feces eating. In 1890 he moved to New York, where he became a
prostitute and began raping young boys. At some point he became interested in
penises themselves and began sexual mutilations. In 1917 Fish s wife ... Show more

them in his abdomen and groin. After his death, needles were found in his pelvic and

Measuring The Absorbance Of Light Of A Reaction

Title: Measuring the Absorbance of Light of a Reaction Between Potassium Iodide
(KI) and Iron (lll) Chloride (FeCl3 ) to Determine the Order and Rate Law
Expression Introduction: The purpose of this experiment was to determine the order
and rate law expression of the reaction between KI and FeCl3 . This was done by
using a colorimeter to measure the absorbance of light of the solution over
time.Originally, both solutions of KI FeCl3 are opaque, but when mixed the solution
changes to a darker yellow. The degree of color change (light absorption) throughout
the experiment was used to measure the rate of reaction via colorimeter. During each
test, the concentrations of KI and FeCl3 were altered to determine the effect of each
reactant.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The contents of the beaker were quickly poured into the cleaned cuvette such that
it was 3/4 full. The cuvette was tapped on the tabletop surface to dissipate bubbles.
The cuvette was placed within the calorimeter, the hatch was closed and data
collection began. After 200 seconds, data collection was stopped. The Vernier
interface was set to linear fit, and initial slope from the time between 20 and 50
seconds was recorded. The Vernier interface was reset, the cuvette was taken out
of the Colorimeter. The cuvette s contents were poured out and cleaned via
KimWipe. The contents of the beaker were disposed of and the beaker was cleaned
and dried. The previous steps were repeated using measurements of FeCl3 and KI
listed in the specific iteration. Once all the iterations were completed the
experimentation process was stopped. Analysis The motivation of this lab was to
determine the rate law of the reaction between KI FeCl3, the rate orders of the
reactants, and the rate constant. Different concentrations of FeCl3, KI, and water
were used through multiple iterations. The initial rate of each iteration was found.
Data gathered from the trials was used to determine the rate orders. The rate order of
FeCl3, calculated from the results of trials 1 3 was 0.604. The second rate order of
FeCl3, which was calculated from the data of trials 2 5, was

It is important to use trend analysis and company comparisons when evaluating the
performance of a company. Using this information helps one determine if the
company is within acceptable ranges, or has gone off track into left field. When
specific areas of differences are noted, management can determine what steps need
to be taken to return to the track and head down the correct path. Trends and

consumers not only want dry goods at a discount, but they also want groceries

OECD paper:
History of the OECD:
The Organization for European Economic Co operation (OEEC), was established by
the Marshall plan to coordinate the American and Canadian aid for reconstruction of
Europe in 1948. Since then and as an extension for the with the convention on the
Organization for Economic Co operation and Development, the OECD an
international economic organization was established in Paris, on the 14th of
December 1960 with the aim of building strong economies in its member countries,
and contribute to development in industrialized as well as developing countries.
Nowadays, the OECD is trying to expand their missions and agenda to include
cooperating according to the requirements of the market economy. Particularly to
help the countries which are making their transition from centrally planned to
capitalist systems. The founding member countries of the OECD include a list of
some of the biggest economies in the world such as the United States of America.
Other founding members include other countries such as most of the European
Countries, Turkey and Japan. Today, the OECD includes up to 34 verity of countries
including countries from Latin America, such as Chile that got accepted as a member
in 2010.
The Aims of the OECD:
The OECD functions mainly as an organization that provides governments a setting
to discuss, develop and perfect economic and social policy in a way that allows them

Presentation In The Military
Presentations can be unforgettable. They cause us to envision possibilities and
contemplate the future. Unfortunately they can also be unforgettable in how they
make us suffer. They can be tedious. Both examples were apparent during my 24 year
career in the military.
Bovee and Thill state, Planning oral presentations are much like planning any other
business message: You analyze the situation, gather information, select the right
medium, and organize the information (p.434). Presentations in my organization
accomplish this and other times don t. Usually one can tell when this has been done
and when it hasn t. Several are effective and others aren t.
There are basic reasons why specific presentations capture attention and certain don t.
One of the biggest problems with presentations in our workplace is, redundancy. They
pound the same information repeatedly. There have been presentations delivered,
where person decided that a word or point needed to change that would create little to
no difference in the presentation; however, we would be required to view another
presentation of the same material, occasionally less than a month after having it
presented. This goes against one of Bovee and Thills purpose for a message, Will
anything change as a result of your message (p. 94).
Others are quite the opposite. There are times we have ... Show more content on

Several of the junior members would become frustrated over making mistakes. If one

The Origins Of The Colosseum
Rome s greatest arena, which began in 72 CE during the reign of Vespasian and
dedicated by Titus in 80 CE, was used to cater the taste for sports for the Romans.
This would be known as the famous Colosseum, because of a gigantic statue of Nero,
called the Colossus, that stood next to the great architectural building (144). The
Romans used the Flavian Amphitheater, another name for the Colosseum, for blood
sports and spectacles including animal hunts, fights to the death, and performances by
trained animals and acrobats. The Romans were considered huge fans of
entertainment and sport, which made this arena a pinnacle of theatre. The origins of
the Olympics were also found during this time, most of which were held in this arena.

Augustus s Use Of Portraiture In The Emperor Augustus
Portraiture in Rome and specifically portraiture in Roman politics has always been
a clever game of propaganda to the people for the people in Rome. During the reign
of the Emperor Augustus there is vast usage of imagery, deification, portraiture and
political symbolism to help him carry out his subtle political propaganda and win the
people of Rome his adoptive father Julius Caesarwas assassinated in 44 BC. It is
specifically in Augustuscoinage and how he used the mints and distribution of money
to the Roman Empire, as a method of directly ensuring his political statements and
beliefs would be instigated within his empire. Augustus use of the coins helped
influence his reign and considerably during the 13 year civil war between himself...

It was considered taboo for a man to put his visage on coins whilst he was still
alive perhaps in reference to the Greek influenced predecessor where the usage of
divine figures or Gods were used. Thus would mean one could be implying some
sort of association with the divine and that they were in fact a God, which refers to
the concept of deifying powerful leading figures only after they are dead. Yet in 44
BCE Julius Caesar became the first living person in Rome to put his own portrait
onto the faces of coins [See Figure.1]. By placing his image on the coins Caesar
had gone against the Republican norm, as well as ensuring his portrait was
recorded in the Republican veristic style which depicts his features with wrinkles
and his receding hairline . Along with the laurel wreath to symbolise victory and
the inscription that translates to Dictator for Life would summarise and enforce a
public opinion of Caesar and his accomplishments simply by being distributed to
the Roman community in the form of coins . Perhaps this disregard of the typical
modesty most Romans would display and, instead would appear arrogant is what
added fuel to the fires which resulted in Caesars death on the Ides of March.
Nevertheless this type of self portraiture on the coinage became a method of
political expression and a ways for rulers or Emperors as in the case of Emperor
Augustus, Caesars adoptive son and nephew by blood, to spread his ideals,
accomplishments and ensure the favour of his people through cleverly designed

The Studies Of Music And How It May Not Help The
Alzheimer...
In order to understand how the studies of music and how it may or may not help the
Alzheimer s disease (AD) one would need the background of it. AD is a progressive
neurological disease that leads to deterioration in cognitive abilities. People with AD
encounter a progressive decline in their neurological capabilities, which manifest in
languagedeficits, among other cognitive difficulties. The main failures in speech
include naming difficulties, verbal fluency deficit, comprehension problems, and
deterioration of spontaneous speech. People with AD tend to have discourse deficits,
which include empty phrases, indefinite words, and repetitions. The speech of a
person with the deficits is difficult for an interlocutor to follow. Thus, theses
progressive language failures can lead people with AD to isolation. Due to their
progressive inability to communicate, people with AD need interventions that address
their communication needs and help prevent social isolation (Dass, A., Amir, D.
2014).
Increased social interaction can improve quality of life by enabling people with AD
to remain socially engaged. Communication trainings include active instruction such
as role playing and analyzing video observations of conversations with people with
AD. Computer based systems are also used, providing multimedia stimuli.
Reminiscence therapy uses the intact long term memory that enabling people with
AD to engage in a conversation about their past experiences (Dass, A., Amir, D.
Examples Of Psychological Resilience
Psychological Resilience
People contend with many difficult and trying times every day. These may be the
loss of a loved one, a serious illness, the loss of a job or source of income, a terrorist
attack, to mention but a few tragic events. More often than not, these events tend to
be life changing, and how people react to them matters. For the most part, most
people react to such incidences with a sense of uncertainty, accompanied by a
flood of strong emotions. In retrospect, people have the tendency to adapt
c0onsidrably to such life changing situations, albeit over time. This process
involves a lot of resilience, which is an ongoing process that necessitates effort,
time, and engagement, with the people going through a series of stages. Of
interest to this discourse, therefore, are some of the coping strategies individuals
employ, to cope with some of these challenging situations. To do this, this essay
uses the example of Frederic Henry in Ernest Hemingway s A Farwell to Arms.
First, we will talk about how Henry has a series of misfortunes from his past, which
he appears to cope with rather well. Second, we will talk about Catherine Barkley,
Frederic s love interest. She has also lost her fiancГ© when she meets ... Show more

psychological dysfunction may range from persistent negative moods, or even a
mental illness. This constitutes the mainstream perception of psychological
resilience. In this sense, Neill observes that psychological stressors, also dubbed risk
factors, are those experiences of major chronic or acute stress, such as the death or
someone close, chronic illness, or even the sexual, emotion, or even physical abuse
(par. 2). Other common stress factors include sudden employment, fear, or even
community violence, such as the recent upheaval of terrorist attacks across the
Post Modernism and City of Glass
There is no clear definition of what postmodernism is. However, City of Glass is
considered to be the by far the text which is most visibly postmodernism. This is
precisely because it offers the kind of narrative that zigzags visibly, deliberately
missing at all angle the sense of a foundation. The postmodernist discourse remains
central to the understanding of City of Glass. Perhaps the only thing that makes the
story alluring is the fact that it is steeped in postmodernist features. Otherwise, it
would have been just a cold and ambiguous story about too many coincidences. To
understand the novels play with predictability, we must have recourse to the post
modernist discourse about it. Aristotle primarily argued in Poetics that:... Show more

As we see there is no clear structure in the novel. It is characterized by
fragmentation and these fragmentations can stand on their own which is contrary to
Aristotle s concept of order in the novel. For instance, City of Glass can stand on its
own even if it is only part of The New York Trilogy. The story can start anywhere
and end anywhere. Auster s story branches out in all directions, without a
beginning, middle or end like some structureless rhizome and it actually reflects the
typical the postmodern central emptiness under the absent god . He therefore,
disrupts the usual order of things. Moreover, chance becomes the order by which
the story operates. In fact, chance becomes what makes the story moves forward.
For instance, if Quinn had not received the wrong call by pure chance, there
probably would not have been any story. The story begins on hazard circumstances
and thrives on hazards to develop. Even the ending of City of Glass is one that is
prone to lead to more hazard instances. The story in itself does not deny the hand of
chance as Quinn; himself states nothing is real except the chance . The result of this
is endless possibilities and alternatives. This reflects what Baudrillard maintains in
Chance, Culture and the Literary Text where he claims that certain phenomena
happen beyond our control and hence chance allowed certain space to escape
responsibility for such phenomena.
It should be considered that memory plays a
How Does Darcy Mature
One of the hardest things to understand as you mature is that you will be wrong a
lot. What is even harder, though, is admitting to yourself that you are incorrect, and
intentionally changing yourself based on new information. The novel Pride and
Prejudice revolves around Elizabeth Bennet and her interactions with Mr. Darcy, a
man she originally takes to be rude and cold, but later realizes is generous and well
mannered. This realization is part of her coming into maturity. Though she appears as
twenty one in the novel, she still only truly comes into womanhood in the moment
she admits she was wrong about Mr. Darcy after reading his explanatory letter. More
than half of the novel shows Elizabeth hating the man she met at a Netherfield ball.

Family, a close weaved group of people inseparable because of links of shared
history, love, caring, and understanding which links them to one another and ignites
a since of belonging and togetherness. Members of a family are like the patches of a
patchwork quilt. Like the patches of the quilt, family members are of different sizes,
shapes, and colors but although different they all play a part in creating a
masterpiece which bond is only as strong as the weakest link. It s these differences in
sizes, shapes, and colors which makes patchwork quiltso unique and amazing to the
public today. Family works the same way you have different types of people with
completely different mindsets, hobbies, and careers but family is special. Family
has a linkage between them, a certain bond that may not be visible by eye but the
bond is so strong that no matter what happens or how far apart they are, they will
always be linked back to the other members of the family. But what happens when
you put another angle to the common institution of family? What happens when that
person in your family who shares this linkage is a pet? Does this change the definition
of family just because the subject at hand is something other than human?
My substantive definition of family helps me too be able to accept pets as members
of the family. Under the definition of law, family is the formal social recognition and
affirmation of a bond as family, particularly in the form of marriage and adoption.

Strikers Played A More Transformative Role During The...
Strikers played a more transformative role during the progressive era. The strikers
were the face of grievances facing workers. They gathered and fought for the rights
they thought they deserved. They were able to accomplish demands that had plagued
their lives for years. Without the use of striking or unionized assemblies, a push for
rights would have been lost in the aggressive and influential employers. The
reformers and push to give workers rights came about from the loud voice of strikes.
The AnthraciteIndustry is one such unionized group that transformed the work of
miners. The Shirtwaist factory workers is another group of strikers that helps prove
that strikers played a more transformative role. These two groups embody the spirit of
transformation towards a better working life. Anthracite coalmining consisted of
differing levels of skill and precision that could be lucrative depending upon the
miner s luck. A coal miner would be lucky to find steady employment, or to even
survive to the day s end. The procedures involved in preparing the coal from the
mines to the shipping was filled with dangers that led the industry as one of the
world s most hazardous. Mine owners to maintain overhead costs and keep mine
workers in the industry, would tactfully engage in underemployment. This left
workers in state of constant need for more work, or higher wages to offset working
part time. These Anthracite miners were largely paid more than the average miner, but
A Metacognitive Analysis
Metacognition is a crucial part of the critical thinking process. It is referred to as
thinking about thinking or the monitoring and control of thought (Martinez 696).
During the last decades, topic of metacognition gets more and more attention from
psychologists, educators, and students. The incoming data, supporting the
significance of metacognitive abilities and their development, serves as a base for
implementation of the teaching of metacognition. Metacognition can and should be
taught in the conditions of the modern educational system.
Metacognition plays a major role both in individual s academic and everyday life. In
the article The Power of Reflection , Stephen Fleming agrees with Flavell s definition
of metacognition as a key to educational success (2). Many studies have proved that
highly cultivated metacognitive abilities enhance individual s academic performance
and lead to academic success (Jacobson 5). Furthermore, Fleming argues that
metacognition, being applied in a wide range of the situations, turns out to be a vital
survival skill (7). Thus, given the significance of metacognition, the teaching of
metacognitive strategies should become one of the primary goals of modern
education system. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Modern studies suggest that metacognition is an independent function of the brain
and not just a skill individuals acquire during their lifetime (Fleming 4). However,
our ability to reflect and appraise our own thinking process is not an automatic
process but is a result of long term development of the cognitive system (Jacobson 4).
Therefore, metacognition needs to be cultivated in a person through different
approaches and techniques. Moreover, continuous work on the metacognitive
development in both academic and everyday life is the only way to master and gain
proficiency of metacognitive
Francisco Goya May 3 1808
Francisco Goya s The Executions of May 3, 1808, is a remarkably interesting
piece of art. This piece represents a protest against the Napoleon Occupational
Army in Madrid. There are various visual elements and design principles in the art,
which will be covered. The beginning of this ILO will contain the visual elements
first, followed by the design principles, and what they mean in the artwork. In
Goya s art, we can see the primary, visual element of lines. Lines represent motion,
dynamics, and direction. The soldiers are aiming their rifles at a group of prisoners
waiting for execution. Horizontal lines indicate a peaceful scene, however, in this
case, it would be appropriate to say they mean a sense of destruction or death, as
the title of the art depicts. As the view follows the direction of the lines, the viewer
is immediately drawn to the man with the bright white shirt. The values of the piece
are relatively dark and morbid, however, when we look at the man with the white
shirt, we can see the opposite effect of the bright white shirt. Going back to the
element of lines, once the viewer looks at the man with the white shirt, you can see
his hands are in a diagonal position. These diagonal lines represent dynamics and
tension. The pressure comes from the imminent execution of that man.

We must also deduce whether the balance is symmetrical or asymmetrical. If one
splits the painting in half, one can see it is not completely balanced. You have more
weight on the right hand side than you do on the left. However, regarding art, it is
balanced. Even though there are more objects on the right, the values of the bright
white shirt give it a sense of equal distribution. This uneven, yet balanced proportion
of the art tells the viewer that it is asymmetrical. It is asymmetrical because it is
unequally distributed, yet it is still

How I learn through journal articles is definitely different than from a novel or a

them a couple times thoroughly. The strategy I find to be the most beneficial is I
will first read the abstract (if there is one), read the introduction, browse through
the headings and finally read the conclusion so that when I go back and read the
whole article I will have a guide and a general idea about what the article is about

dense and you can get trapped in the language and you end up reading a paragraph

By connecting the ideas from the articles and applying them with Things Fall Apart
which I believe is always helpful when discussing theory is to apply it to a modern
or relevant sense. It makes it much easier to comprehend somewhat complex
theoretical ideas on what identity is by seeing it played out in a novel we had just
previously examined. This links to what I said before with connecting concepts to my
own personal experiences or previous understandings for a more holistic
understanding. Although there is the argument that a good researcher is able to
separate oneself from their work and simply display the facts; however, I do not
think that this is what the course requires from students. I think that because identity
is such an intricate part of your daily lives it would be near impossible to separate
oneself from the research (or these two articles), well at least for myself.
To improve my learning on the theories of identity and reading scholarly journal
articles in general I think it is important to do more research. To be able to put the
articles you read within the greater context of what has already been written, was this
ground breaking work, or was it expanding on concepts that had already been studied?
I think that it is important to know where the article you are reading stands in

The Productivity Benefits Of Staying Up Late
The Productivity Benefits Of Staying Up Late Can You Get More Done? There is
just as much evidence suggesting that people that work late at night are as
unproductive as early birds, as there is suggesting the opposite, and one would be
foolish to conclude on one side of the fence or another. Yet, despite the fact there is
no conclusive proof that night owls are more productive than early birds are, there
are benefits to working later in the evening and night. Working While Tired Is Not
Productive Let us first address a few common sense issues before moving on to the
benefits staying up late. If you wake up early and try to stay up late, then you will
be less productive because you will be tired. Furthermore, if you try to stretch
yourself with things such as caffeine and other stimulants, then this will have a
damaging long term effect on your concentration, productivity and health.
(Research Showing Harmful Effects of Caffeine) We all need enough sleep, even
insects experience Drosophila Melanogaster when they are tired. (Sleep Tiredness)
There Are Fewer Distractions At Night A night owl is more easily able to block
out distractions at night. People do not tend to pop around at night, fewer people
call, you are not expected to do your washing or take your car in to be fixed. If you
are working and a distraction takes up ten minutes of your time, you lose around an
hour of productivity. (Maker s Schedule). If you personally find it easier to block out

Environmental and sustainability considerations for very large systems As mentioned above, the demand for faster and smaller devices with higher performance is increasing. However with increasing devices, there is increase in data generated. Large companies like google, amazon, Microsoft and many others generate huge amounts of data which is stored in large storage centres called Data centres. It is estimated that by 2020, around 35 zettabytes of data will be generated every year [6]. To store and manage such large data, huge data centres are required. • 3. Spider Monkeys Lab Report Color Vision in Spider Monkeys Objective: To determine the color vision abilities of four individual spider monkeys (Ateles geoffroyi). Certain New World monkeys, such as spider monkeys, vary in the types of color they can see. Furthermore, the color vision abilities of these monkeys vary among individuals due to the differing genetics of males, who have dichromatic vision and certain females who have trichromatic vision similar to humans (Regan et al., 2005). Additionally, only one behavioral study has been conducted with spider monkeys to test their color vision abilities (Ateles fusciceps and Ateles belzebuth; Blakeslee Jacobs, 1982). However, with a sample size of only two spider monkeys who were a different species than the spider monkeys housed at the zoo, this research should be reinvestigated. Ultimately, the implications of the study will give us more insight into spider monkey color vision and increase opportunities for improved environmental enrichment for animals based on their individual color abilities. Procedure: We will use a match to sample paradigm to test color vision. In the match to sample paradigm, animals are presented with a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Once the animal learns touching the box presented to them after the delay leads to reinforcement, we will begin to present two boxes of differing color to the animals. In order to gain reinforcement at this stage of training, the animal must be able to correctly discriminate color based on the sample they just previously saw. Due to an absence of other studies to access information from, I am uncertain of how many sessions it will take before this behavior is fully

  • 6. Examples Of Gross Profit Costings Based on the ABC data below are the gross profit margins for each product produced. ABC is short for activity based costing. Companies follow a two stage process when allocating indirect costs using ABC. The first stage entails assigning costs to pools based on the activities that cause the costs to be incurred. The second stage involves allocating the costs in the activity costs pools to products through the use of a variety of cost drivers. With the ABC system, there is a variety of cost drivers used. Thus, a different cost driver is used for each category of overhead cost. Furthermore, with the ABC system, a larger amount of overhead costs are allocated to OS 367. Therefore, since OS 367 utilizes greater proportions of some of the resources than other products, the overhead costs for those categories are allocated to OS 367 in larger amounts. Hence, the total overhead cost per unit increased for OS 367 (Edmonds et al., 2011). Furthermore, traditional costing does not classify the specific overhead charges or resource used to fabricate a specific product and distributes costs by assigning average overhead rates. However, ABC categorizes specific activities employed for producing each individual product and allocates them based on their consumption of resources. Drilling Innovations used traditional costing, which in turn, caused them to assign overhead based on machine hours and ignore other overhead activities used to produce each product. However, by using ABC, the costs were allocated based on the activities used to produce each individual drilling head. Therefore, the cost was more accurately spread based on the overhead consumption of each product individually. Costs that were incurred to produce OS 367 were being allocated to GS 157 and HS 241 with the traditional costing method. Once
  • 7. The Body Shop Sociology Here is a quick and present scenario: Two children, a boy and a girl, are watching television together. In the show they are watching, the father figure is off working a fantastic job and virtually becoming a superhero to his son, while the wife remains nothing more than a housewife, which seems to be her only reason for existing on the show. While the time frame the woman appears on the show is small, it manages to have a sociological impact on the children. The company The Body Shop observes this impact with a billboard questioning the lack of dominance for women in media. The Body Shop displays an advertisement meant for the socially unaware. Ironically enough, the girl in the advertisement is smaller and less noticeable, which portrays the same stereotype the shop is trying to destroy. If the image had the boy and girl set as equals, only then would the viewers have a reason for feeling remorseful about their internalized misogyny. Some viewers of the image might even feel resentful towards the image and realize how it distorts their frame of reference, which can lead to harsh feelings about the feminist movement. While the image may help bring others to look into feminism, it can also push others away from it, which the movement does not need. It is hardly fair of the board to make viewers believe they are sexist when the image is set up to make sure the interpretation will go a specific

As I continued my journey in internal medicine and hematology, I realized that ethical practice and empathy are the essence of medicine every single day. My interest in Internal Medicine developed during my 12 month long internship at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, the largest teaching hospital serving patients with all types of medical complaints from all over Bangladesh. Each admission day, I was enthralled by the diversity of problems and the complexity of clinical presentations of the diseases. Because Internal Medicine deals with diseases involving all organ systems of human body, it requires a vast yet, in depth clinical knowledge and diagnostic acumen. I found it intensely satisfying for an intelligent and inquisitive mind to formulate a list of differentials for any presenting complaint and deduce one final diagnosis using clinical and laboratory clues. Even more rewarding was developing relationships with the patients as I cared for them from admission to discharge. I remember how Mr. K s face lit up when I said, Ah! You and your grandson have the same birthday, right? My favorite Internal Medicine rotation, however, was in the hematology department. To me it was a blend of basic science and clinical medicine including critical care, infectious disease and palliative care. I noticed the

  • 18. Ponyboys Maturity Confidence comes with maturity, being more accepting of yourself. Nicole Scherzinger. Throughout the novel Ponyboy develops a new level of maturity. He discovers that there is more in life other than his viewpoint. He learns how to get through the tough times. He learns who to look to for help and guidance. Ponyboy most importantly learns that he must stay gold. Stay gold, Ponyboy. Stay gold... (Hinton, pg 148) To me this quote means that Ponyboy should stay true to the kind, sensitive, and cautious person that he really is deep down inside of him. One of the ways that Ponyboy matured through the novelis through his friendships. One of the friendships that matured the most was Ponyboy s friendship with Dally. When the book started Ponyboy admired Dally. Ponyboy admired that Dally was brave and risky. Dally knew what to do in every situation because he had experience from all of the times he had gotten in trouble himself. Ponyboy especially admired this when he and Johnny were in a pickle and needed help. Ponyboy then slowly throughout the novel realizes who Dally really is. Don t you know a rumble ain t a rumble without me? (Hinton, pg. 126). Dally is really a thief who causes trouble and isn t trusted by many people. He is selfish and the only person he truly loved was Johnny. When Ponyboy slowly came to these realizations, I think he might have been slightly disappointed. I believe this because when you truly look up to someone and you realize their real character, you feel let down or upset at yourself. Ponyboy, even though upset, still had Dally s back because no matter what Dally did the Greasers had each other s backs. Ponyboy s mind, immensely shut, didn t accept the fact that not all Soc s were bad until a little bit later in the book. He then realizes that the Soc s are also just humans who have just as many harsh problems as the Greasers. He then is proven this when he meet Cherry. Cherry is a Soc who is kind, witty, and watches the same sunset that Ponyboy does. They end up sharing an immense amount of things in common, and get along well. Ponyboy then takes a couple of steps back and awe s at that fact that even though Cherry is a Soc she is not mean but instead pleasant to be around.

Self knowledge happens by observing yourself in your relationship with your classmates, your teachers and all those around you; it happens when you observe the ways of the other, his gestures, his way of dressing, talking, contempt or flattery, and your reaction; it happens when you observe everything that is happening in you and around you and you see as clearly as you see your face in the mirror. When you look in the mirror, you see yourself as you are, is not it? You may wish to have another head having another form, with a little more hair, a less ugly face, but the facts are there, clearly reflected by the mirror, and you can not sweep them and say, That I am beautiful! If you can look in the mirror of relationship exactly as you do in an ordinary mirror, then self knowledge is endless. It s like walking into an unfathomable ocean without shores. Now we want mostly to an end, we want to be able to say, I have come to the knowledge of me and I m happy. But things are not happening as well. If you can look without condemning what you see without comparing yourself to others, without wishing to be more beautiful or more virtuous, if you can just watch what you are and continue on your way, you will discover that it is possible to go infinitely far. This was done by using a colorimeter to measure the absorbance of light of the solution over time.Originally, both solutions of KI FeCl3 are opaque, but when mixed the solution changes to a darker yellow. The degree of color change (light absorption) throughout the experiment was used to measure the rate of reaction via colorimeter. Unfortunately they can also be unforgettable in how they make us suffer. They can be tedious. Both examples were apparent during my 24 year career in the military. Bovee and Thill state, Planning oral presentations are much like planning any other business message: You analyze the situation, gather information, select the right medium, and organize the information (p.434). Presentations in my organization accomplish this and other times don t. Usually one can tell when this has been done and when it hasn t. Several are effective and others aren t. There are basic reasons why specific presentations capture attention and certain don t. One of the biggest problems with presentations in our workplace is, redundancy. They pound the same information repeatedly. There have been presentations delivered, where person decided that a word or point needed to change that would create little to no difference in the presentation; however, we would be required to view another presentation of the same material, occasionally less than a month after having it presented. This would be known as the famous Colosseum, because of a gigantic statue of Nero, called the Colossus, that stood next to the great architectural building (144). The Romans used the Flavian Amphitheater, another name for the Colosseum, for blood sports and spectacles including animal hunts, fights to the death, and performances by trained animals and acrobats. The Romans were considered huge fans of entertainment and sport, which made this arena a pinnacle of theatre. The origins of the Olympics were also found during this time, most of which were held in this arena. From the

It is specifically in Augustuscoinage and how he used the mints and distribution of money to the Roman Empire, as a method of directly ensuring his political statements and beliefs would be instigated within his empire. It was considered taboo for a man to put his visage on coins whilst he was still alive perhaps in reference to the Greek influenced predecessor where the usage of divine figures or Gods were used. Thus would mean one could be implying some sort of association with the divine and that they were in fact a God, which refers to the concept of deifying powerful leading figures only after they are dead. Yet in 44 BCE Julius Caesar became the first living person in Rome to put his own portrait onto the faces of coins [See Figure.1]. By placing his image on the coins Caesar had gone against the Republican norm, as well as ensuring his portrait was recorded in the Republican veristic style which depicts his features with wrinkles and his receding hairline . Along with the laurel wreath to symbolise victory and the inscription that translates to Dictator for Life would summarise and enforce a public opinion of Caesar and his accomplishments simply by being distributed to the Roman community in the form of coins . Perhaps this disregard of the typical modesty most Romans would display and, instead would appear arrogant is what added fuel to the fires which resulted in Caesars death on the Ides of March. Nevertheless this type of self portraiture on the coinage became a method of political expression and a ways for rulers or Emperors as in the case of Emperor Augustus, Caesars adoptive son and nephew by blood, to spread his ideals, accomplishments and ensure the favour of his people through cleverly designed political

In order to understand how the studies of music and how it may or may not help the Alzheimer s disease (AD) one would need the background of it. AD is a progressive neurological disease that leads to deterioration in cognitive abilities. People with AD encounter a progressive decline in their neurological capabilities, which manifest in languagedeficits, among other cognitive difficulties. The main failures in speech include naming difficulties, verbal fluency deficit, comprehension problems, and deterioration of spontaneous speech. People with AD tend to have discourse deficits, which include empty phrases, indefinite words, and repetitions. The speech of a person with the deficits is difficult for an interlocutor to follow. Thus, theses progressive language failures can lead people with AD to isolation. Due to their progressive inability to communicate, people with AD need interventions that address their communication needs and help prevent social isolation (Dass, A., Amir, D. 2014). Increased social interaction can improve quality of life by enabling people with AD to remain socially engaged. Communication trainings include active instruction such as role playing and analyzing video observations of conversations with people with AD. Computer based systems are also used, providing multimedia stimuli. Reminiscence therapy uses the intact long term memory that enabling people with AD to engage in a conversation about their past experiences (Dass, A., Amir, D.

These may be the loss of a loved one, a serious illness, the loss of a job or source of income, a terrorist attack, to mention but a few tragic events. More often than not, these events tend to be life changing, and how people react to them matters. For the most part, most people react to such incidences with a sense of uncertainty, accompanied by a flood of strong emotions. In retrospect, people have the tendency to adapt c0onsidrably to such life changing situations, albeit over time. This process involves a lot of resilience, which is an ongoing process that necessitates effort, time, and engagement, with the people going through a series of stages. Of interest to this discourse, therefore, are some of the coping strategies individuals employ, to cope with some of these challenging situations. To do this, this essay uses the example of Frederic Henry in Ernest Hemingway s A Farwell to Arms. First, we will talk about how Henry has a series of misfortunes from his past, which he appears to cope with rather well. Second, we will talk about Catherine Barkley, Frederic s love interest. This is precisely because it offers the kind of narrative that zigzags visibly, deliberately missing at all angle the sense of a foundation. The postmodernist discourse remains central to the understanding of City of Glass. Perhaps the only thing that makes the story alluring is the fact that it is steeped in postmodernist features. Otherwise, it would have been just a cold and ambiguous story about too many coincidences. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As we see there is no clear structure in the novel. It is characterized by fragmentation and these fragmentations can stand on their own which is contrary to Aristotle s concept of order in the novel. For instance, City of Glass can stand on its own even if it is only part of The New York Trilogy. The story can start anywhere and end anywhere. Auster s story branches out in all directions, without a beginning, middle or end like some structureless rhizome and it actually reflects the typical the postmodern central emptiness under the absent god . He therefore, disrupts the usual order of things. Moreover, chance becomes the order by which the story operates. In fact, chance becomes what makes the story moves forward. For instance, if Quinn had not received the wrong call by pure chance, there probably would not have been any story. The story begins on hazard circumstances and thrives on hazards to develop. Even the ending of City of Glass is one that is prone to lead to more hazard instances. The story in itself does not deny the hand of chance as Quinn; himself states nothing is real except the chance . The result of this is endless possibilities and alternatives. This reflects what Baudrillard maintains in Chance, Culture and the Literary Text where he claims that certain phenomena happen beyond our control and hence chance allowed certain space to escape responsibility for such phenomena. It should be considered that memory plays a

What is even harder, though, is admitting to yourself that you are incorrect, and intentionally changing yourself based on new information. The novel Pride and Prejudice revolves around Elizabeth Bennet and her interactions with Mr. Darcy, a man she originally takes to be rude and cold, but later realizes is generous and well mannered. This realization is part of her coming into maturity. Though she appears as twenty one in the novel, she still only truly comes into womanhood in the moment she admits she was wrong about Mr. Darcy after reading his explanatory letter. More than half of the novel shows Elizabeth hating the man she met at a Netherfield ball.

They gathered and fought for the rights they thought they deserved. They were able to accomplish demands that had plagued their lives for years. Without the use of striking or unionized assemblies, a push for rights would have been lost in the aggressive and influential employers. The reformers and push to give workers rights came about from the loud voice of strikes. The AnthraciteIndustry is one such unionized group that transformed the work of miners. The Shirtwaist factory workers is another group of strikers that helps prove that strikers played a more transformative role. These two groups embody the spirit of transformation towards a better working life. Anthracite coalmining consisted of differing levels of skill and precision that could be lucrative depending upon the miner s luck. A coal miner would be lucky to find steady employment, or to even survive to the day s end. The procedures involved in preparing the coal from the mines to the shipping was filled with dangers that led the industry as one of the world s most hazardous. Mine owners to maintain overhead costs and keep mine workers in the industry, would tactfully engage in underemployment. This left workers in state of constant need for more work, or higher wages to offset working part time. These Anthracite miners were largely paid more than the average miner, but

It is referred to as thinking about thinking or the monitoring and control of thought (Martinez 696). During the last decades, topic of metacognition gets more and more attention from psychologists, educators, and students. The incoming data, supporting the significance of metacognitive abilities and their development, serves as a base for implementation of the teaching of metacognition. Metacognition can and should be taught in the conditions of the modern educational system. Metacognition plays a major role both in individual s academic and everyday life. In the article The Power of Reflection , Stephen Fleming agrees with Flavell s definition of metacognition as a key to educational success (2). Many studies have proved that highly cultivated metacognitive abilities enhance individual s academic performance and lead to academic success (Jacobson 5). Furthermore, Fleming argues that metacognition, being applied in a wide range of the situations, turns out to be a vital survival skill (7). However, our ability to reflect and appraise our own thinking process is not an automatic process but is a result of long term development of the cognitive system (Jacobson 4). Therefore, metacognition needs to be cultivated in a person through different approaches and techniques. Moreover, continuous work on the metacognitive development in both academic and everyday life is the only way to master and gain proficiency of metacognitive

This piece represents a protest against the Napoleon Occupational Army in Madrid. There are various visual elements and design principles in the art, which will be covered. The beginning of this ILO will contain the visual elements first, followed by the design principles, and what they mean in the artwork. In Goya s art, we can see the primary, visual element of lines. Lines represent motion, dynamics, and direction. The soldiers are aiming their rifles at a group of prisoners waiting for execution. Horizontal lines indicate a peaceful scene, however, in this case, it would be appropriate to say they mean a sense of destruction or death, as the title of the art depicts. As the view follows the direction of the lines, the viewer is immediately drawn to the man with the bright white shirt. The values of the piece are relatively dark and morbid, however, when we look at the man with the white shirt, we can see the opposite effect of the bright white shirt.
