Research is a systematic and structured
process of investigation that involves the
collection, analysis, and interpretation of
data in order to answer a specific question or
solve a problem. The purpose of research is
to generate new knowledge, test theories, or
develop practical applications that can be
used to address real-world issues.
Purpose of Research
The purpose of research in education is to
generate new knowledge, test theories, and
develop practical applications that can be
used to improve teaching and learning
outcomes. The aims, objectives, and goals
of educational research may vary depending
on the specific research question being
investigated, but some common purposes
include:
 To improve teaching and learning: One of the
main aims of educational research is to identify effective
teaching practices, develop new instructional methods, and
improve student learning outcomes.
 To understand student development:
Educational research can help educators better
understand how students develop cognitively,
socially, and emotionally, and how this development
can be supported in the classroom.
 To evaluate educational programs:
Research can be used to evaluate the
effectiveness of educational programs and
interventions, and to identify areas for
improvement.
 To inform policy: Educational research can
provide evidence to inform policy
decisions related to curriculum,
assessment, teacher training, and
other educational issues.
 To address equity and access:
Research can be used to identify and
address disparities in educational
outcomes among different student
groups, and to develop strategies to
improve equity and access in
education.
The objectives of educational research may
include:
1. Identifying gaps in existing knowledge related to a
particular topic or issue.
2. Developing new theories or models to explain
educational phenomena.
3. Evaluating the effectiveness of educational
interventions or programs.
4. Identifying factors that contribute to student
success or failure.
5. Understanding the impact of social, cultural,
and economic factors on education.
The goals of educational research may
include:
1. Improving student learning outcomes and
academic achievement.
2. Enhancing the effectiveness of teaching
and instructional practices.
3. Promoting equity and access in education.
4. Informing policy decisions related to
education.
5. Contributing to the advancement of
knowledge and understanding in the field
of education.
