This document provides instructions for shading an object to show light and shadow. It instructs the reader to: 1) Sketch the object (an apple) and background (table) lightly, then determine the light source location. 2) Draw the apple's cast shadow by aligning a ruler to the light source and apple edge. 3) Shade the apple, distinguishing the light and shadow sides, with the darkest shading at the core shadow and where the apple touches the table. 4) Gradually blend the shading to avoid hard edges, with the area under the apple darker than further areas.

1. Activity 7: Space light and Volume.

2. First sketch your fruit, in this example an apple

3. Try to keep your outlines as light as possible

4. Draw the edge of the table behind your fruit, then erase any unneeded lines

5. The next step is to determine where the light is coming from. Let's have one shining down from the top
left draw a little flashlight just to remember where it is where the fruit blocks light from reaching the table

6. Let's draw a cast shadow you can use a ruler to find the cast shadows length just align it to your light source and the edge of the apple

7. Now we know how long to draw the cast shadow I'm just gonna draw a long oval shape

8. Where the dotted lines touch the apple we have our boundary between the light and shadow side

9. Draw a core shadow making sure the thickest section is the darkest

10. Where the Apple touches the table there's less light so let's shade that area darker

11. Now that We've taken care of those two areas, we are going to fill in the rest of the shadow side by adding a flat layer
of graphite that is lighter than the core shadow

12. Once you're done soften the transition between each area to avoid that hard edge between light and dark values

13. Shade the area directly under the apple darker than the far right

14. How bright do you want the light side of the fruit to be it's totally up to you. Pick a light value and then shade the entire
space flatly

15. Where the form turns away from the direct light add your mid-tones which will immediately make the surface
appear rounder

16. Use an eraser to indicate the highlight

17. If you want your drawing to pop out of the page exaggerate some of those values to create depth
