A self rescuer is a simplified gas mask that miners use in coal mines. Weighing about 1 kg, it contains chemicals like manganese dioxide and copper oxide that convert carbon monoxide (CO) gas into carbon dioxide (CO2). CO is poisonous and odorless. The self rescuer allows miners to breathe for one hour after its seal is broken in an atmosphere with 1% CO concentration. It is used when smoke, combustion gases, or unexpected dust are detected as signs of fire or explosion.
