This document discusses self-defense mechanisms in several different taxa. It describes camouflage, mimicry, alarm call systems, biting and pinching used by walking sticks, mantis shrimp, surgeonfish, and vervet monkeys. For molluscs, defenses include hard shells, retracting into shells, camouflage, toxins, and regeneration. Echinoderms use spikes, regeneration of limbs, expelling toxic guts and mucus, and hiding under shells and rocks.
