Mertajam Seberang Prai dan Madrasah Al-Masyhur di Pulau Pinang.
2. Sekolah agama atau madrasah lebih sistematik daripada sekolah pondok,
iaitu dari segi kurikulum (berstruktur), waktu belajar (tetap) dan
peralatan (kerusi meja).
3. Ditubuhkan dengan tujuan melahirkan pelajar yang bermoral tinggi.
4. Walau bagaimanapun, terdapat kelemahan pada sekolah agama atau
madrasah. Sekolah-sekolah ini tidak dapat melahirkan masyarakat Islam
yang moden kerana tiada penekanan kepada Sains, Matematik dan
Bahasa Inggeris.
Sekolah Vernakular
1. Sekolah vernakular merujuk kepada sekolah yang menggunakan bahasa
ibunda dalam pelaksanaan penyelidikan dan pembangunan (P&P) di
sekolah.
2. Terdapat tiga jenis sekolah vernakular, iaitu Melayu, Cina dan Tamil.
3. Sekolah vernakular Melayu yang pertama sekali ditubuhkan ialah pada
tahun 1855, iaitu di Bayan Lepas, Pulau Pinang.
4. Sekolah Melayu Gelugor, Pulau Pinang menggunakan bahasa Melayu
sebagai bahasa pengantar.
5. Pada tahun 1872, A.M. Skinner memperkenalkan persekolahan dua sesi,
iaitu:
i. Pagi bagi Bahasa Melayu, Matematik, Ilmu Alam dan mata
pelajaran vokasional
ii. Petang bagi Bahasa Arab dan al-Qur'an
1. Kekurangan guru merupakan faktor tiada sekolah menengah Melayu
2. pada waktu itu. Ini telah mendorong sehingga tertubuhnya dua buah
maktab perguruan, iaitu
i. MPSI Tanjung Malim pada tahun 1922 dan
ii. MPPM di Melaka pada tahun 1935.
2. Sekolah vernakular Cina ditubuhkan pada tahun 1815 oleh kumpulan
pendakwah baru Persatuan Pendakwah London. Terdapat juga sekolah
Cina yang dibuka oleh orang perseorangan.
3. Sekolah Cina menggunakan bahasa Cina/Mandarin (Kuv Yu) sebagai
bahasa pengantar, manakala guru-guru dan buku teks diimpot dari
Negara China.
4. Contoh sekolah vernakular Cina ialah
i. SJK (C) Hua Lian, Tanjung, Perak dan
ii. SJK (C) Chung Hwa, Kota Bharu, Kelantan.
5. Kelas Bahasa Cina diadakan di semua `Free School', iaitu di Melaka,
Pulau Pinang danSingapura, namun ia gagal dan telah dihentikan.
6. Sekolah vernakular'I'amil menggunakan bahasa Tamil sebagai bahasa
pengantar. Guru, kurikulum dan buku teks diimpot dan India.
Contohnya, SJK (T) Manikavasagam, Tanjung Malim, Perak.
7. Pada tahun 1925, Kod Buruh berkuat kuasa, di mana semua estet vang
mempunyai 10 orang kanak-kanak dalam umur persekolahan diwajib
menyediakan sekolah yang bertujuan membasmi buta huruf.
8. Sekolah Inggeris hanya terdapat di kawasan bandar dan menggunakan
bahasa Inggeris sebagai bahasa pengantar.
9. Pendidikan bahasa Inggeris mula diperkenalkan di kalangan anak
bangsawan Melayu pada tahun 1905. Penang Free School (1816 )
merupakan sekolah Inggeris pertama yang ditubuhkan. Guru-guru yang
mengajar di sekolah Inggeris ini terdiri daripada paderi yang mendapat
pendidikan di Eropah.
