Retrofitting of Masonry Buildings by Base IsolationIDES Editor
Seismic response of masonry buildings retrofitted
using base isolation technique is investigated. The concept of
seismic isolation is applied here by separating the super
structure from the foundation at plinth level by a sliding
earthquake energy reducing friction layer in the form of green
marble/geosynthetic. The dynamic interface property of the
sliding couple has been investigated. In order to investigate
the effectiveness of base isolation the response of the sliding
system is obtained numerically by solving the governing
equations of motion under under synthetically generated IS:
1893, 2002, spectrum compatible accelerogram corresponding
to most severe seismic zone of India (PGA=0.36g) and compared
with the corresponding fixed base structure. It is observed that
50% reduction in maximum roof acceleration for the base
isolated structure in comparison to the maximum roof
acceleration of conventional structures limiting the
earthquake energy transmission to super structure during
strong earthquake, leading lesser damage of masonry
buildings in earthquake prone area and can be used as a low
cost base isolation for earthquake hazard mitigation

techniques to protect structures against damage from earthquake attacks has been considered as one of the most effective
approaches and has gained increasing acceptance during the last two decades. This paper present three dimensional nonlinear
time history analysis is performed on r/c building by the use of computer program SAP 2000 v12.0.0. The dynamic analysis of the
structure has been carried out and the performance of the building with and without isolator is studied. The main objective here is
to make seismic response control by providing Isolators and comparing between the fixed based and isolated base building.

Abstract A seismic base isolation is an earthquake resistant design method that is based on reducing the seismic demand and also the ductility demand. The basic concept of base isolation system is to increase the natural time period of the fixed base building and to protect the structure from the seismic effect. The main purpose of this work is to study the dynamic response of structure when subjected to different isolators. For this purpose, a three dimensional response spectrum analysis and time history analysis is performed using a commercial structural analysis software package called as SAP 2000 to study the influence of isolation damping on building. The main objective is to make a comparison between the fixed base building and various isolation systems such as friction pendulum isolator, lead rubber bearing (LRB) isolator and high damping rubber isolator, subjected to strong earthquakes to achieve an optimal design of the base isolation system. SAP 2000, a popular large scale explicit finite element analysis software used to stimulate the behavior of base isolated structure. In the present work, it was found that base isolation substantially increases the time period of structure and hence correspondingly reduces the base shear. The top displacement for fixed and isolated cases conspicuously shows the reduction in the case of isolated frame. The study shows that the bending moment and shear force values are reduced for base isolated frame when compared to fixed base building. From design consideration the steel requirement is reduced in base isolated structures when compared to fixed base building. Key Words: Isolators, SAP2000

Abstract Seismic base isolation is a fast advancing technology in which the superstructure is isolated from the entire structure or from the substructure by means of rubber bearing isolators or frictional sliding isolators. The main aim of the base isolation technology is to isolate the structure from the harmful effects of the ground accelerations or earthquake excitations. In this paper, the procedure for the selection of the three ground motions is briefly explained and they are used in analyzing a masonry – reinforced concrete office building for the Internal Revenue Service in the Huating County of the Pingliang City in China. The structure is first analyzed with the PKPM software to ascertain the structural internal forces are within reasonable limits but because this software cannot be used to advance analysis in the area of base isolation, Sap 2000 is used to remodel the structure, analyze, then apply the seismic base isolation. This office building has been strengthened to be fortified against ultimate bearing capacity failure as it is an existing structure. The lead rubber bearing isolators, LRB 400, LRB 500 and LRB 600 are used to isolate the building model and results from the structural response are compared, first amongst the time histories and then between the enveloped time histories and the response spectrum. The floor joint accelerations are observed to be reduced and the joint velocities as well, whereas the floor joint displacements are increased. The response spectrum alone is seen to not be an enough ground acceleration parameter in a seismic analysis and design of this model; as such it is recommended to include time history analysis. The maximum percentage decrease in acceleration and velocity can be seen occurring in the response spectrum, namely, 85.82% and 59.76%, respectively. The maximum percentage increase in the displacement is also evident in the response spectrum, 57.59%. In the time histories, the maximum is seen in Ec County Y-direction for the acceleration reduction at a value of 60.57%; Delta artif records a maximum velocity reduction of 28.42% in the Y-direction and finally, the Delta artif X-direction also records a maximum displacement increment, at a value of 26.36%.

Comparison of Two Similar Buildings with and without Base IsolationIJARIIT
Reinforced concrete is a major construction material for civil infrastructure in current society.
Construction design has always preceded the development of structural design methodology. Dramatic collapse of
buildings has been observed after each disastrous earthquake, resulting in loss of life. To prevent such a loss Baseisolation
is used which enables a building to survive potentially devastating seismic impact by providing flexibility into
the connection between the building and the foundation. The mechanism of the base isolator increases the natural
period of the overall structure, and decreases its acceleration response to earthquake/seismic motion. A reinforced
concrete building with lead rubber bearing is used. The study analysis performed to check for the adequacy of the
base isolation against earthquake damage when compared to the conventional earthquake resistant design. A building
was analyzed using the equivalent lateral force method and response spectrum analysis as fixed base (FB) and as
isolated base (IB) with lead rubber bearing. The analysis represents a case study for reinforced concrete to show the
ultimate capacity of the selected bearing system, and to make a comparison for the difference between the isolated
base and the fixed base buildings. R esults show that the presence of the lead rubber bearing reduces significantly the
displacement, moment and shear generated for the same mode and hence the reinforcement required is also lesser
when compared to the traditional fixed based structure.

Abstract Earthquakes can create serious damage to structures. The structures already built are vulnerable to future earthquakes. The damage to structures causes deaths, injuries, economic loss, and loss of functions. Damage to the structure causes due to ground acceleration. This can be minimizing by increasing strength of the structure. Sometimes it is not possible to increase the strength of the structure indefinitely. So it should be tried to increase the capacity of structure using seismic improvement techniques. In this study, there are three different types of G+10 structures with fixed base, structure with viscous damper and structure with high damping rubber bearing are considered. These structures are modeled using finite element software SAP2000v16. These structures have same plan area and are assumed to be situated in seismic zone IV and having medium soil condition. The analysis of these structures is done by performance based pushover analysis method and response spectrum method. The pushover analysis method is used to find out the performance point and capacity of structure. High damping rubber bearing isolators (HDRB) and viscous damper (VD) are use for seismic improvement of RC structure. The procedure of analysis adopted for fixed base structure is same repeated for structure with viscous damper (VD) and base isolated (HDRB) structure. So it will help in comparative parametric study. The results of analysis are compared in terms of storey displacements, modal time period, storey acceleration, performance point, storey drift. The comparative study shows that storey displacement, storey acceleration, storey drift is reduced substantially for structure with high damping rubber bearing (base isolated structure). composed of very special class of structure and therefore require special treatment. Hence to overcome the effects of seismic
forces, Flat slab system in which slab rests on drop or capital which is connected to column is induced with different load
resisting systems. The combined systems which is used to withstand seismic forces in this study are 1. Flat slab without lateral
load resisting system, 2. Flat slab with shear wall, 3. Flat slab with infill wall, 4. Flat slab with bracings, 5. Flat slab with shear
wall and bracings. ETABS software version is used to accomplish dynamic analysis and also building is investigated for nonlinear
static analysis in order to identify seismic demands. From the obtained results conclusions are drawn.

2007 to understand their seismic performance. The ductile behavior of eccentrically braced frame is highly desirable for structures
subjected to strong ground motion. Maximum stiffness, strength, ductility and energy dissipation capacity are provided by
eccentrically braced frame. Studies were conducted on the use of outrigger frame for the high steel building subjected to
earthquake load. Braces are designed not to buckle, regardless of the severity of lateral loading on the frame. Thus eccentrically
braced frame ensures safety against collapse.

Abstract
Infill panels are widely used as partition walls as well as external walls of the building to fill the gap between RC frames. Non-structural member may provide considerable stiffness to the building and hence may improve the performance of the RC building during ground motions. But In most of the cases, the ignorance of this property of masonry in designing of the RC frame may get an unsafe design. There are two methods are used to determine the effect of ground motion. The effect of ground motion on RC frame building has been carried out by considering with and without the stiffness of infill wall. A comparative study is carried out with RC building using Equivalent Lateral Force method and Response Spectrum method. The masonry infill has been modeled as an equivalent diagonal strut element using Hendry formula. Pushover analysis is carried out on bare frame and frame with infill wall. The model has been generated using STAAD Pro and results obtained from the analysis are compared in terms of strength and stiffness with bare frame.

Seismic Response of Structure with Single Coreijtsrd
Shear walls and outriggers have been used so far to resist the seismic waves of earthquake and heavy winds actions. The complete failure of the structures that has occurred in the past due to catastrophic earthquake may be avoided with the use of shear wall in the structure. The study is concerned with the use of shear wall as a single core in structure that will resist the seismic waves of earthquake. In the present study analysis of RCC building has been carried out by changing the locations of shear walls in the building. The seismic analysis performed is linear dynamic response spectrum analysis using the well known analysis and design software ETABS 16.2.0. Seismic performance of the building has been investigated based on parameters such as strorey drift, base shear and storey displacement. INTRODUCTION The concept of base isolation system had been suggested in last few decades and the available technologies and the knowledge of base isolation system are getting mature and well established. Seismic isolation systems are more effective when applied to high stiffness, low-rise buildings, owing to their abilities to alter the characteristic of the building from rigid to flexible. An increasing number of structures to be isolated reflect the fact that base isolation system is gradually becoming accepted as a proven technology in earthquake hazard mitigation. Base isolation is an anti-seismic design strategy that can reduce the effect of earthquake ground motion by decoupling the superstructure from the foundation. The structure can be decoupled from the horizontal components of the ground motion by interposing structural elements with low horizontal stiffness between the foundation and superstructure [1]. To minimize the transmission of potentially damaging earthquake ground motions into a structure is achieved by the introduction of flexibility at the base of the structure in the horizontal direction while at the same time introducing damping elements to restrict the amplitude or extent of the motion caused by the earthquake somewhat akin to shock absorbers. In recent years this relatively new technology has emerged as a practical and economic alternative to conventional seismic strengthening. This concept has received increasing academic and professional attention and is being applied to a wide range of civil engineering structures [2].
2. TYPES OF ISOLATOR
Many types of isolation system have been proposed and have been developed to varying stages, such as elastomeric bearings, Lead plug bearings, Friction pendulum bearings .In the present study we considered the friction pendulum bearings .The cross section of bearing is as shown in Fig-1.

The friction pendulum system (FPS) is a widely used bearing based on the principle of sliding system and with a pendulum type isolator to provide a damping function using friction. The FPS isolator has an articulated slider moving on a spherical friction surface. The surface of the articulated slider in contact with the spherical friction surface is all coated with a self-lubricating composite material. The other side of the slider is attached to the stainless steel concave, spherical surface and also covered with low-friction composite material. When the slider moves over the

spherical surface, the supported mass will be lifted and the
movement will provide the restoring force to the system.
Under extreme loads such as earthquakes, the slider moves
along the concave surface, causing the supported structure to
move in small arcs like a pendulum. The isolators reduce
transmission of the earthquake forces to the structure by
deflection (the pendulum motion) and by friction (damping)
on the sliders. The radius of the curvature of the concave
surface will dominate the effective stiffness and the system
period.
3. INFLUENCE OF MASONRY INFILL WALLS
Infills interfere with the lateral deformations of the RC
frame, separation of frame and infill takes place along one
diagonal and a compression strut forms along the other.
Thus, infills add lateral stiffness to the building. The
structural load transfer mechanism is changed from frame
action to predominant truss action the frame columns now
experience increased axial forces but with reduced bending
moments and shear forces. When infills are non-uniformly
placed in plan or in elevation of the building, a hybrid
structural load transfer mechanism with both frame action,
and truss action may develop. In such structures, there is a
large concentration of ductility demand in a few members of
the structure. For instance, the soft-storey effect (when a
storey has no or relatively lesser infills than the adjacent
storey), the short-column effect (when infills are raised only
up to a partial height of the columns), and plan-torsion effect
(when infills are unsymmetrical located in plan), cause
excessive ductility demands on frame columns and
significantly alter the collapse mechanism. Another serious
concern with such buildings is the out of plane collapse of
the infills which can be life threatening. Even when the
infills are structurally separated from the RC frame, the
separation may not be adequate to prevent the frame from
coming in contact with the infills after some lateral
displacement; the compression struts may be formed and the
stiffness of the building may increase.

Stafford Smith (1966) developed the formulations for αh

7. MODELING AND ANALYSIS The three different building models are analyzed in Etabs as shown in Fig-3, 4, 5. 7.1 Model 1 The properties of the considered building configurations in the present study are summarized below:
Height of each floor: 3 m
Plan dimensions of each storey block: 6X5m
Floor thickness: 0.15m
Wall thickness: 0.2m
Parapet wall thickness: 0.15
Density of concrete: 25KN/m3
Live load: 3KN/m2
Floor finish: 1KN/m2
Poisson ratio of concrete: 0.15
Poisson ratio of masonry: 0.16
Damping: 0.05
Size of column: 200X450mm
Size of beams: 200X450mm
The structural material is assumed to be isotropic and homogenous. Joint between the building elements has been modelled by using semi-rigid diaphragm as constraints.

Similarly the fixed base structure without infill is having zero displacement at the base; the displacement is gradually increased to storey to storey. The top storey displacement is more than the fixed infill structure but it is lesser than the isolated structure. The base isolated structure is having displacement at the base. It is increased storey to storey. In that the drifts have minor changes from base to top storey in the base isolated structure. The storey drift in with infill rapidly decreases from base to first storey. Then it decreases gradually for further storey height. Without infill structure have more storey drift compared to base isolated structure and with infill structure. This shows that by using isolated system we can reduce the storey drift. The storey drift is the displacement of one level relative to the other level above or below. According to IS 1893-2002 finally permissible value of storey drift is 0.004h, where „h‟ is storey height in mm. Analysis shows storey drift of all structure are within permissible limit. The storey drift in bare frame is increased to 95.32%, 95.33%, 95.33% and 95.34% with zone 2, zone 3, zone 4 and zone 5 respectively with infill structure and decreased to 28.47%, 28.5% and 28.48% with zone 2, zone 3 and zone 4 respectively in base isolated structure, but in zone 5 the storey drift decreased to 41.75% in the base isolated structure.

9. CONCLUSION The Effect of adding infill as diagonal strut increases the stiffness of the structure. Dynamic analysis of bare frame and infill frame reveals that infill counteract with the lateral forces due to earthquake and reduces building model time period. Simple steps for design of FPS type bearing have been represented in flowchart. Comparison of the dynamic response analysis between infill and without infill structure showed that the proposed model make design more economical. Increase in flexibility of system due to isolation increase of total displacement compare to infilled frame and bare frame structure. Implementation of the isolation system results into reduction of the inter storey drifts to negligibility level so it can be said that they practically don‟t exist. This reduction enables the structure to behave as almost ideally stiff. Storey drift values are within the permissible limit as specified in IS 1893-2002 i.e. 0.004 times of height of storey and inclusion of strut reduces storey drift value along with base isolation. Base Isolation Scheme was selected as best meeting the retrofit objectives and providing the most favourable performance. REFERENCES [1].
