This is a presentation I gave at the University of Washington in Dec 2011 that gives an overview of my Ph.D thesis work at a relatively early stage (includes updated references). It lays out the objective of my thesis, and presents three different "views" of the Hellenic subduction zone, using three complimentary seismic imaging methods: 1) Teleseismic migration, 2) Receiver functions, and 3) Local tomography.

Energy emitted by the earth surface which has ability to change the normal functioning of human beings is termed as Geopathic stress. World health Organisation in 1992 has identified that a building can make a person sick. The presence of ground water vein is closely associated with generation of such a stress and in turn it affects the built environment. Built Environment constitutes houses, roads, footpaths, shops etc. Geopathic Stress affects almost each and every part of the built environment. This energy penetrates metals, concrete and other substance which have high degree of impermeability. Although moving away from a stress zone is easier in residential built environment but it is difficult for the road environment where the accidents occurs because of such stresses. In the road environment, concrete may get deteriorated and cracks may get developed because of such stresses. The chances of lightening are more on such geopathically stressed zones. Also if geopathic stress is present on road environment, it may lead to increased reaction time of drivers in turn responsible for occurrence of accidents. If people sleep on such stress zones, they are susceptible to various diseases like cancer. Hence ‘GEOPATHIC STRESS’ is the threat to the built environment.

Azerbaijan is the site of convergent plate collisions along the Alpine-Himalayan active mountain belt. Brittle
faults in the Azerbaijan area are mostly Cenozoic in or younger. The data presented demonstrate clearly that
geological structures are commonly repeated at all scales from outcrop to regional. Several regional earthquakes
have been strongly felt and caused damages in and around Tabriz during history. Urban seismic risk is
increasing with population growth and encroachment of vulnerable built in environment into areas susceptible
seismic hazard. Seismic -hazard assessment an estimate of ground motion at the site of interest, taking into
account instrumental and historical earthquake records, information on tectonics, geology, and
attenuation characteristics of seismic waves Tabriz is important industrial city of Iran. It has a very high
population density about 2.000000 people in area just 90 km2. The main objective of the Tabriz seismic
instrumentation and microzonation study was to carry out and propose new building in Tabriz and suburbs in
order to apply these criteria its development programs and determine the potential for damage to
existing constructions during earthquake motions, and finally earthquake risk mitigation assessment.

The main features of solar cycle 23, sun enters a period of intermediate and weak solar activity in terms of sunspot number. Based on the observation from Omniweb data centre for solar- interplanetary data , geomagnetic activity and monthly mean count rate of cosmic ray intensity (CRI) variation data from Oulu / Moscow/ Keil neutron monitors (Rc=0.80 GV , Rc=2.42 GV and Rc=2.29 GV,) during solar activity cycle 23 . The phase of minimum solar activity began in May 2005 and lasted for 4.5 years the unprecedented duration of the relative sunspot numbers falls. It is observed that the strength of the interplanetary magnetic field has been falling off to new low levels, and reduces the GCR entering inner- heliosphere and it is also found that SSN positive correlated with Kp and Ap and sunspot number, 10.7 cm solar radio flux, were inverse correlated with monthly mean count rate of cosmic ray intensity.

This presentation provides a brief introduction to the seismic data, teleseismic migration imaging method, and preliminary imaging results/interpretation that would later form the basis of Chapter 2 of my Ph.D. thesis. It was given in 2010 at the SSA meeting in Portland, OR, and won a Student Presentation Award. A large impact crater beneath Hiawatha Glacier in northwest GreenlandSérgio Sacani
We report the discovery of a large impact crater beneath Hiawatha Glacier in northwest Greenland. From airborne radar surveys, we identify a 31-kilometer-wide, circular bedrock depression beneath up to a kilometer of ice. This depression has an elevated rim that cross-cuts tributary subglacial channels and a subdued central uplift that appears to be actively eroding. From ground investigations of the deglaciated foreland, we identify overprinted structures within Precambrian bedrock along the ice margin that strike tangent to the subglacial rim. Glaciofluvial sediment from the largest river draining the crater contains shocked quartz and other impact- related grains. Geochemical analysis of this sediment indicates that the impactor was a fractionated iron aster- oid, which must have been more than a kilometer wide to produce the identified crater. Radiostratigraphy of the ice in the crater shows that the Holocene ice is continuous and conformable, but all deeper and older ice appears to be debris rich or heavily disturbed. The age of this impact crater is presently unknown, but from our geological and geophysical evidence, we conclude that it is unlikely to predate the Pleistocene inception of the Greenland Ice Sheet.

Observation of large scale precursor correlations between cosmic rays and ear...Sérgio Sacani
The search for correlations between secondary cosmic ray detection rates and seismic
effects has long been a subject of investigation motivated by the hope of identifying a new
precursor type that could feed a global early warning system against earthquakes. Here we show
for the first time that the average variation of the cosmic ray detection rates correlates with the
global seismic activity to be observed with a time lag of approximately two weeks, and that the
significance of the effect varies with a periodicity resembling the undecenal solar cycle, with a
shift in phase of around three years, exceeding 6 𝜎 at local maxima. The precursor characteristics
of the observed correlations point to a pioneer perspective of an early warning system against
earthquakes.

Normal Cell Metabolism:
Cellular respiration describes the series of steps that cells use to break down sugar and other chemicals to get the energy we need to function.
Energy is stored in the bonds of glucose and when glucose is broken down, much of that energy is released.
Cell utilize energy in the form of ATP.
The first step of respiration is called glycolysis. In a series of steps, glycolysis breaks glucose into two smaller molecules - a chemical called pyruvate. A small amount of ATP is formed during this process.
Most healthy cells continue the breakdown in a second process, called the Kreb's cycle. The Kreb's cycle allows cells to “burn” the pyruvates made in glycolysis to get more ATP.
The last step in the breakdown of glucose is called oxidative phosphorylation (Ox-Phos).
It takes place in specialized cell structures called mitochondria. This process produces a large amount of ATP. Importantly, cells need oxygen to complete oxidative phosphorylation.
If a cell completes only glycolysis, only 2 molecules of ATP are made per glucose. However, if the cell completes the entire respiration process (glycolysis - Kreb's - oxidative phosphorylation), about 36 molecules of ATP are created, giving it much more energy to use.
IN CANCER CELL:
Unlike healthy cells that "burn" the entire molecule of sugar to capture a large amount of energy as ATP, cancer cells are wasteful.

Observation of Io’s Resurfacing via Plume Deposition Using Ground-based Adapt...Sérgio Sacani
Since volcanic activity was first discovered on Io from Voyager images in 1979, changes
on Io’s surface have been monitored from both spacecraft and ground-based telescopes.
Here, we present the highest spatial resolution images of Io ever obtained from a groundbased telescope. These images, acquired by the SHARK-VIS instrument on the Large
Binocular Telescope, show evidence of a major resurfacing event on Io’s trailing hemisphere. When compared to the most recent spacecraft images, the SHARK-VIS images
show that a plume deposit from a powerful eruption at Pillan Patera has covered part
of the long-lived Pele plume deposit. Although this type of resurfacing event may be common on Io, few have been detected due to the rarity of spacecraft visits and the previously low spatial resolution available from Earth-based telescopes. The SHARK-VIS instrument ushers in a new era of high resolution imaging of Io’s surface using adaptive
optics at visible wavelengths.

Since the loophole-free Bell experiments of 2020 and the Nobel prizes in physics of 2022, critics of Bell's work have retreated to the fortress of super-determinism. Now, super-determinism is a derogatory word - it just means "determinism". Palmer, Hance and Hossenfelder argue that quantum mechanics and determinism are not incompatible, using a sophisticated mathematical construction based on a subtle thinning of allowed states and measurements in quantum mechanics, such that what is left appears to make Bell's argument fail, without altering the empirical predictions of quantum mechanics. I think however that it is a smoke screen, and the slogan "lost in math" comes to my mind. I will discuss some other recent disproofs of Bell's theorem using the language of causality based on causal graphs. Causal thinking is also central to law and justice. I will mention surprising connections to my work on serial killer nurse cases, in particular the Dutch case of Lucia de Berk and the current UK case of Lucy Letby.
THE IMPORTANCE OF MARTIAN ATMOSPHERE SAMPLE RETURN.Sérgio Sacani
The return of a sample of near-surface atmosphere from Mars would facilitate answers to several first-order science questions surrounding the formation and evolution of the planet. One of the important aspects of terrestrial planet formation in general is the role that primary atmospheres played in influencing the chemistry and structure of the planets and their antecedents. Studies of the martian atmosphere can be used to investigate the role of a primary atmosphere in its history. Atmosphere samples would also inform our understanding of the near-surface chemistry of the planet, and ultimately the prospects for life. High-precision isotopic analyses of constituent gases are needed to address these questions, requiring that the analyses are made on returned samples rather than in situ.
