This presentation provides a brief introduction to the seismic data, teleseismic migration imaging method, and preliminary imaging results/interpretation that would later form the basis of Chapter 2 of my Ph.D. thesis. It was given in 2010 at the SSA meeting in Portland, OR, and won a Student Presentation Award. The final versions of the images and details of their interpretation are available in Pearce et al., JGR 2012 and Chapter 2 of my Ph.D. thesis (see LinkedIn profile for references).

The structure and composition of habitat play key roles in determining the spatial patterns of biota within marine landscapes. Understanding species habitat associations provides the information necessary to predict the diversity and abundance of species thus enabling greater control over species management and sustainability. Landscape ecology is commonly used in the terrestrial environment to understand the relationship between spatial patterns and ecological processes. While some landscape ecology metrics lend themselves to marine spatial studies more recent studies offer new ways of understanding the spatial relationships between species and the marine environment utilizing remote sensing and marine focused spatial pattern measures. Advances in remote sensing and spatial pattern recognition make it possible to assess habitat value within rocky reefs and create predictive models of fish association. Understanding habitat associations and having the ability to predict fish aggregations is a valuable tool for resource managers and marine spatial planning during development or redesign of marine protected areas. The oceans around the world are suffering a variety of abuses which may be lending to the decline in abundance of many economically valuable fish species. Improved resource management is necessary to ensure sustainability of the world’s fisheries. Multiple predictors are often used in development of predictive models for groundfish including complexity (VRM), relative topographic position (TPI), depth, distance to maximum VRM, and slope. Habitat complexity offers shelter from predation, a place for larval settlement, and is believed to be a predictor of species diversity. This study investigated use of habitat characteristics as predictors of species presence or absence at rocky reefs off the coast of Monterey, California over the Del Monte Shalebeds. Using bathymetric and fish aggregation data collected by the Seafloor Mapping Lab (SFML) at California State University, Monterey Bay (CSUMB) a probability model for groundfish aggregations in the shalebeds.

Airborne gravity anomaly over Delta State in the Niger delta basin of Nigeria has been interpreted to obtain the structural trends/types and depth to basement in the state. The residual gravity anomaly obtained from a second order polynomial operation on the observed field data was enhanced by a first order filtering operation based on the regional geology. This was converted to a gridded data and analyzed qualitatively to reveal NS and EW trending subsurface structures. Inverse and forward modeling using Oasis Montaj software were applied to selected portions using geological models of sphere and dyke to reveal syncline and anticline structures at depths of between 2005 m to 7372 m, with density contrast of between 1.12 gcm-3 and 2.70 gcm-3. The Euler deconvolution operation with a structural index of one, reveal depths between 124.2 to 16,000 m. The results show that the maximum depth to basement in the area occurs in the northern part of the state with maximum depth of 16,000 m.

An enigmatic low-backscatter, acoustic anomaly occurs on the New Jersey continental margin between Hudson and Wilmington Canyon channels. The presence of the low-backscatter anomaly, as seen with 6.5- and 12-kHz data, indicates a change in the physical properties of the seafloor or near sub-surface. Analyses of seafloor and sub-surface acoustic data with previously collected sediment cores suggest the low-backscatter feature corresponds to an outcrop of older strata uncovered by erosion and non-deposition by the Western Boundary Undercurrent (WBUC). The decrease in backscatter strength is enhanced by the presence of gas in the sub-surface sediments found in the buried Chesapeake Drift.

This paper titled Seismic Refraction Survey for Groundwater Potentials of Southern Paiko Area. Niger State, Nigeria, employs the service of seismic refraction survey method. A twelve-channel seistronix was used for the data collection. The profiles were marked at 100 m intervals, while the profiles lines traversed 1000 m (1km). A Total of 44 spreads were shot. Data were collected, Time – distance (T-S) graphs were plotted using matrix laboratory software, velocities of the underlying layers obtained and depths to the refractor layer computed and geologic cross sections were obtained. The results obtained gave an overview of the lateral variation in the lithological changes of the subsurface earth materials in the surveyed area. The basement surface varied in depth, from 10.16 m to a maximum of 14.80 m. weathered layer velocities ranging from 809 m/s to 3612 m/s and consolidated layer velocities varying between 2858 m/s to 9696 m/s. Four shot points were delineated as aquifer potentials of the area having depth to refractor varying between 13.70 m and 14.80 m with overburden velocities ranging from 1940 m/s to 3462 m/s. The rock materials identified in the surveyed area are chiefly sand, saturated clay, gravel, gneiss, igneous rock and granite.

En esta charla descubriremos las propiedades (masa, velocidad y energía) del cuerpo que impactó la Luna durante el Eclipse del 21 de Enero de 2019 y del cráter que posiblemente dejó. Las propiedades han sido obtenidas a partir del análisis de dos imágenes tomadas, una en el Observatorio La Loma en San Vicente de Ferrer (Antioquia) y la otra en Santo Domingo (República Dominicana). Además se usó un novedosa técnica numérica desarrollada en la Universidad de Antioquia para estudiar impactos de asteroides y que se describió en la charla. Trabajo fue posible gracias a una próspera colaboración entre profesioanales y aficionados que pone de relieve la importancia de la Ciencia Ciudadana, de la que que también hablamos.

Much of the Martian surface is covered by a weathering layer (regolith or soil) produced by long-term surface processes such as impact gardening, eolian erosion, water weathering, and glacial modifications. China’s first Martian mission, Tianwen-1, employed the Mars Rover Penetrating Radar (RoPeR) to unveil the detailed structure of the regolith layer and assess its loss tangent. The RoPeR radargram revealed the local regolith layer to be highly heterogeneous and geologically complex and characterized by structures that resemble partial or complete crater walls and near-surface impact lenses at a very shallow depth. However, comparable radar data from the Lunar far side are rather uniform, despite the two surfaces being geologically contemporary. The close-to-surface crater presented in this study shows no detectable surface expression, which suggests an accelerated occultation rate for small craters on the surface of Mars as compared to the rate on the Moon. This is probably due to the relentless eolian processes on the Martian surface that led to the burial of the crater and thus shielded it from further erosion. The high loss tangent indicates that the regolith at the Tianwen-1 landing site is not dominated by water ice.

Ionospheric total electron contents (TEC) disturbances following the 2011 great Tohoku earthquake on March 11, 2011 were observed by a GPS network in South Korea. The impulsive TEC enhancements were first observed approximately 16.5 minutes after the beginning of the earthquake. Various types of seismic waves were also observed over South Korea.To investigate more detailed disturbances in the TEC, we processed the GPS data with a sampling rate of 1Hz and applied a band-pass filter with corner frequencies of 0.0 and 0.005 Hz. Small-scale traveling ionospheric disturbances (TIDs) with a period of approximately 4minutes (~250 seconds) were observed from 6:15 to 7:10 UT. These variations are considered to be a clear manifestation of the acoustic resonance oscillations. We also observed medium-scale TIDs with a period of approximately 15 minutes and a duration of approximately 60 minutes. A remarkable finding is that the damping of the amplitude of the medium-scale TIDs was observed clearly in the time series

The search for correlations between secondary cosmic ray detection rates and seismic effects has long been a subject of investigation motivated by the hope of identifying a new precursor type that could feed a global early warning system against earthquakes. Here we show for the first time that the average variation of the cosmic ray detection rates correlates with the global seismic activity to be observed with a time lag of approximately two weeks, and that the significance of the effect varies with a periodicity resembling the undecenal solar cycle, with a shift in phase of around three years, exceeding 6 𝜎 at local maxima. The precursor characteristics of the observed correlations point to a pioneer perspective of an early warning system against earthquakes.

As the population is increasing and will reach about 9 billion upto 2050. Also due to climate change, it is difficult to meet the food requirement of such a large population. Facing the challenges presented by resource shortages, climate change, and increasing global population, crop yield and quality need to be improved in a sustainable way over the coming decades. Genetic improvement by breeding is the best way to increase crop productivity. With the rapid progression of functional genomics, an increasing number of crop genomes have been sequenced and dozens of genes influencing key agronomic traits have been identified. However, current genome sequence information has not been adequately exploited for understanding the complex characteristics of multiple gene, owing to a lack of crop phenotypic data. Efficient, automatic, and accurate technologies and platforms that can capture phenotypic data that can be linked to genomics information for crop improvement at all growth stages have become as important as genotyping. Thus, high-throughput phenotyping has become the major bottleneck restricting crop breeding. Plant phenomics has been defined as the high-throughput, accurate acquisition and analysis of multi-dimensional phenotypes during crop growing stages at the organism level, including the cell, tissue, organ, individual plant, plot, and field levels. With the rapid development of novel sensors, imaging technology, and analysis methods, numerous infrastructure platforms have been developed for phenotyping.

Since volcanic activity was first discovered on Io from Voyager images in 1979, changes on Io’s surface have been monitored from both spacecraft and ground-based telescopes. Here, we present the highest spatial resolution images of Io ever obtained from a groundbased telescope. These images, acquired by the SHARK-VIS instrument on the Large Binocular Telescope, show evidence of a major resurfacing event on Io’s trailing hemisphere. When compared to the most recent spacecraft images, the SHARK-VIS images show that a plume deposit from a powerful eruption at Pillan Patera has covered part of the long-lived Pele plume deposit. Although this type of resurfacing event may be common on Io, few have been detected due to the rarity of spacecraft visits and the previously low spatial resolution available from Earth-based telescopes. The SHARK-VIS instrument ushers in a new era of high resolution imaging of Io’s surface using adaptive optics at visible wavelengths.

In this book, we use conservation of energy techniques on a fluid element to derive the Modified Bernoulli equation of flow with viscous or friction effects. We derive the general equation of flow/ velocity and then from this we derive the Pouiselle flow equation, the transition flow equation and the turbulent flow equation. In the situations where there are no viscous effects , the equation reduces to the Bernoulli equation. From experimental results, we are able to include other terms in the Bernoulli equation. We also look at cases where pressure gradients exist. We use the Modified Bernoulli equation to derive equations of flow rate for pipes of different cross sectional areas connected together. We also extend our techniques of energy conservation to a sphere falling in a viscous medium under the effect of gravity. We demonstrate Stokes equation of terminal velocity and turbulent flow equation. We look at a way of calculating the time taken for a body to fall in a viscous medium. We also look at the general equation of terminal velocity.
