The Cultural Culture Of Japan
In the world today, we are exposed to many different cultures; America is a great example of this. It
is a giant melting pot full of many unique people who bring their cultures from around the world.
Thanks to them, we have little parts of towns that are chock full of their culture, like China Town
and Little Italy. We also have them to thank for all the different types of food and styles of cooking
that they have brought over. But what about the cultures of other countries, have Americans
influenced their culturelike they did to ours? One country that really interested me in answering this
question was in Japan. Japan is packed full of culture from their old traditions of their new futuristic
culture and has Americans have any part in their pop culture transformation?
From the earliest of times Japan was full of culture. The Nara period, which is the years of the
history that covers from 710 AD to 794 AD, was a big year for writers. During this period some of
Japan s literary monuments were written, including the Kojiki and Nihongi, the Man yoshu, also
known as the Collection of Ten Thousand Leaves, and the Kaifuso.
Another major cultural development of the era was the establishment of Buddhism in Japan.
Buddhism was first introduced in the sixth century, years 501 AD to 600 AD, but had a mixed
reception until the Nara period. Shomu and his Fujiwara consort were fervent Buddhists and
actively promoted the spread of Buddhism, making it the guardian of the state and

Ignorance In Chickamauga, By Ambrose Bierce
Somewhere in the world, a war is being fought. Blood is being spilled, screams and gunshots are
filling up the sky as lives are being taken. This brutal, violent, and horrific experience is separated
from society by a wall of ignorance and misconception. In Chickamauga , Ambrose Bierce breaks
down this barrier by using the deaf mute child as a way to symbolize society s ignorance and
misconception towards war.
One way that the deaf child is being symbolized is him being a deaf mute (4). Being deaf hinders
the child s ability to comprehend sound, which prevents him from experiencing what war truly is.
During, his trip to the forest, the boy sobbed himself to sleep (1). It wasn t until later that the boy
discovers what happens while he is sleeping: Almost within a stone s throw of where he lay they
had fought a battle; but all unheard by him were the roar of the musketry, the shock of the cannon,
the thunder of the captains and the shouting. He had slept through it all (3). Due to the boy not
being able to hear, he is able to sleep through and completely ignore the ongoing battle nearby. As
loud and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The boy imagines the ongoing battle mostly as a fun interest, until suddenly, His little world
swung half around; the points of the compass were reversed. He recognized the blazing building
as his own home! (3 4). At this point, the child realizes what has happened, but it is not over yet,
There, conspicuous in the light of the conflagration, lay the dead body of a woman (4). At this
point, the boy inherits a full understanding of what war really is. Throughout the whole story he
has not come upon this until it affects him personally. Bierce uses this as a way to denote how
society is similar to boy in the way that they do not completely understand war unless it has affected

I Will Revisit Russon s Definition Of Memory, And Three...
In this paper I will revisit Russon s definition of memory, and three of the aspects that he presents
as important in the memory process. I will also argue that our body play an important role for our
remembering, as does the objects we interact with. As well as present my position on Russon
description of memory demonstrating that Russon s description is indeed relatable to the actual
human experience. Russon s definition of memory is not subjected to one main idea, but rather an
intertwining of related ideas pertaining to experience. He views memory as, What we experience as
the determinateness of objects that communicates to us what we can and cannot do, (Russon 41).
To emphasize, we experience our world through interactions with the world s objects. The contact
made with these objects provides an identity for them that later communicates to us about ourselves.
Russon present this idea of memory based on two types of memory, implicit and explicit. Implicit
memory are memories that we remember in part, while explicit memory are those that we
remember completely. An example that Russon gives in another instance that connects to this is the
idea of him terminating his lease and having a few weeks remaining is inscribed in everything
within his apartment. Each object represents the identity of the future commitment of moving
whether pervasively or occasionally. However Russon thinks that for us to remember there are
certain aspects that needs to be involve. First is

Software Testing Is A Technical Task
Art of Software Testing

Abstract
Software testing is a technical task, but it also involves some important considerations of
economics and human psychology. In technical aspects it is the process of analyzing a software
item to detect the differences between existing and required conditions (that is defects/errors/bugs)
and to evaluate the features of the software item . A software error occurs when the program does
not do, what its end user reasonably expects it to do.
Software testing is more difficult because of the vast array of programming languages, operating
systems, and hardware platforms that have evolved but at the same time ... Show more content on

Introduction
Software engineering provides the framework for building the high quality software. It integrates
the various strategies, methods and tools for the software development. The revolution of software
engineering offers the different types of software development models. It majorly ratifies the
performance of the software through the testing and maintenance phase of the software.
The testing move toward the static testing (human testing) and dynamic testing (Computer aided
testing).
There are some basic strategies that qualify the software to make sure it s good performance. These
strategies listed below
Structure testing
пѓЁWhite box testing( developer testing)
пѓЁfocuses on the inner structure of the test object
Function testing
пѓЁBlack box testing ( user testing)
пѓЁBehavior given by the specification The validation improves the performance of testing by
increasing the confidence in the quality issues of the software.
System Testing
System testing is not a process of testing the functions of the complete system or program, because
this would be redundant with the process of function testing. This testing has a particular purpose as

The “Roaring 20’S” And The “Jazz Age” Produced
Great...
The roaring 20 s and the Jazz Age produced great literature. The characters and plots were often
held together by images, ideas, sounds or words that help a reader understand an idea and help
to explain the central idea of a literary work. F. Scott Fitzgerald s The Great Gatsby is full of rich
symbols. Like many of the most interesting symbols, the green light changes and develops its
meaning through the novel. The green light that is displayed at the end of Daisy and Tom s East
egg dock, is the symbol of Gatsby s hopes and dreams. In Chapter 1, Nick observes Gatsby one
night: Something in his leisurely movements and the secure position of his feet upon the lawn
suggested that it was Mr. Gatsby himself, come out to determine what share... Show more content

Compared to the great distance that separated him from Daisy it had seemed very near to her,
almost touching her. It had seemed as close as a star to the moon. Now it was again a green light
on a dock. His count of enchanted objects had diminished by one (93). The symbol changes for
Gatsby because the present Daisy is different than the Daisy from the past that he fell in love
with in Louisville. In addition to this strong literary symbol, another great one is Dr. TJ
Eckleburg and the Valley of Ashes. The eyes of Doctor T. J. Eckleburg are: blue and gigantic
their retinas are one yard high. They look out of no face, but, instead, from a pair of enormous
yellow spectacles which pass over a nonexistent nose. Evidently, some wild wag of an oculist set
them there to fatten his practice in the borough of Queens, and then sank down himself into eternal
blindness, or forgot them and moved away. But his eyes dimmed a little by many paintless days
under sun and rain, brood on over the solemn dumping ground (24). Some readers may pick up that
the billboard represents God s eyes looking down on the society judging America s morals.Instead,
throughout the novel, Fitzgerald suggests that the mere essence of Dr. TJ Eckleburg symbolizes
deprivation of the American soul. The billboard is placed there to encourage business; however, it
lays untidy and abandoned. Also with the

The Transformation of Jean Valjean Exemplified in Les...
All humans have different morals that change based on their environment and circumstance. Jean
Valjean, in the novel Les Miserables(1961), changes from someone with confused morals to a man
with more morals than most whom with respect learns to love and share. The protagonist s
transformation begins when the bishop recognizes Jean Valjeans human soul that is capable of
goodness. When he is put out into the streets, Valjean goes from place to place being rejected for
being a convict until he meets the bishop who sees him as a common person, That men saw his
mask, but the bishop saw his face (75). Even though people might be good, they don t always see
someone s true soul. The bishop s simple act of kindness and deeper understanding... Show more

Forget not, never forget that you have promised me to use this silver to become an honest man
(33). Even though Valjean does not recall this promise, he seals it by taking not only the silver
but the two candlesticks as well. After Valjean gets wealthier, he sells all his possessions of
value except for the two candlesticks that the bishop has given him. It was a room very well
fitted with mahogany furniture, ugly as all furniture of that kind is, and the walls covered with
shilling paper. They could see nothing but two candlesticks of antique form that stood on the
mantle, and appeared to be silver (54). The constant presence of the candlesticks reminds
Valjean of the bishop and what he has done for him. He felt the bishop was there, that the bishop
was present all the more that he was dead... (75). The candlesticks are meaningful and important
to Valjean, which makes these objects symbolic. The candlesticks have an even deeper meaning
than anything else, because the bishop gives them to Valjean as a symbol for change and the
promise he makes but never recalls. Everyone needs someone to love and care for as well as
someone who can return that love and care. When Cosette comes into Valjean s life, it makes him
feel something he didn t feel in a long time, When he saw Cosette, when he had taken her, carried
her away, and rescued her, he felt his heart move (123). At this point, she becomes more than just a
girl but another symbol in Valjean s

How Did Josef Mengele Medical Experiments
The Holocaust was led by Adolf Hitler during World War II. There were many countries involved
such as, the United States of America, Italy, France, and Germany. The Angel of Death also
known as Dr. Josef Mengele was one of the most famous doctors that worked in the internment
camps. Some of the experiments were on twins and dwarfs. Dr. Mengele used a lot of different
experiments against the Jews and there are lasting effects/remnants from the experiments. During
the first phase of experiments, pairs of twins and people with abnormalities through heritage were
put on display for Dr. Mengele and were assigned to go through all conceived medical
examinations. These people had their picture taken. Plaster casts were made from their own jaws

The tub of ice water proved to be the fastest way to drop the body temperature. The victims of
these experiments were young, healthy Jews and Russians. Usually they were stripped and were
to be prepared for their experiments. An insulated probe, which measured the drop in the body s
temperature was put into the rectum. The probe was held in the rectum by an expandable metal
ring that would have been composed to open the inside of the rectum to hold it thoroughly in
place. After they got the probe in place the victim would then be placed into a tub of ice water
and begin to freeze. It was later learned that most victims strayed from consciousness and died
when their body temperature dropped down to 25 degrees Celsius. The intense winters in
Auschwitz made a natural place for some of these experiments. The other way to freeze a victim
was to restrain them on a stretcher and take them outside naked (Medical Experiments of the

Navigating The Csu Global Library
Option #1: Navigating the CSU Global Library
ProQuest and Business Source Complete (EBSCO) are the two databases that are being
compared in this article. Initially ProQuest seems easiest to navigate and provides a wide range of
topics. EBSCO was also chosen due to the focus on business related articles. Comparing these
databases on a business related topic will prove which one has the best outcome. Searching,
navigating, narrowing the scope and using the article tools are all important parts to identifying the
right research. Badke (2014) states in reference to searching databases that if you want results that

your research question ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When reviewing the EBSCO help tools it explains that even in a basic search there are still search
options. Help tools similarly explain, options for selecting phrases, choosing AND/OR, and even
turn on a smart text search, which leverages technology to conduct the best results. Without limiting
the search a basic search of mobile banking turns up 11,081 items. This is a much smaller pool than
what ProQuest brought up, however, EBSCO seems to be more business focused and also lists,
newspapers, magazines, trade publications and videos.
Narrowing the Scope of the Search Results
Advanced search seems like the way to go when narrowing down the scope of the research. As
you start typing it provides the user with word suggestions. While typing mobile banking it
suggested consumer and mobile banking and mobile banking adoption. There are also AND, OR
and NOT options. Selections for full text, peer reviewed and scholarly journals are also available.
There is even an option to select all kinds of publication dates. Using suggested topics, plus using
the AND feature (consumer adoption of internet banking) AND (mobile banking adoption) within
the past three years seems like the best bet. The advanced search only narrowed down the results
to 710 articles. 710 articles, is still too many and needs to be narrowed down even more. The
publication chart on the side showed the majority of the articles were published in 2015 and 2016.

The Introduction of the Electric Guitar
According to the Smithsonian Institute, electronic amplification is one of the most successful
innovations brought around at the end of the 1930s. The 1920s had a rise in the popularity of dance
music, and the recording industry was getting started. This was also the start of the Big Band Era
(guitaristsource.com). Guitarmakers started experimenting to develop a new, louder, guitar.
Electrical amplification was developed by the radio industry in the 1920s (howstuffworks.com). In
1931, George Beauchamp and Adolf Rickenbacker would go on to develop an electromagnetic
pickup they would later use to create the electric guitar. This first model would go on to be called
the Frying Pan , because of its resemblance to the cookware. This first model was often played
flat on the lap (howstuffworks.com). Eventually, electric guitars began commercial production
in the 1930s (Goertzen 435). In 1939, Les Paul, an acoustic guitarist, developed a new type of
electric guitar by placing the old pickup on a solid block of wood. This new solid body guitar
didn t have the feedback problems that the hollow bodied electric guitars had. Also, it had a
greater sustain than earlier models (howstuffworks.com). In order for an electric guitar to work, it
needs a pickup and an amplifier. Pickups are electro magnetic pieces on the guitar s body, and they
are usually found on the guitar s body in between the bridge and the fretboard. These electro
magnets create magnetic fields, which then

Factors for Economic Growth of West Germany 1945 1960 Currently, in the Middle East,
millions of people are fleeing their home s in order to seek asylum from extremist groups who
threaten their way of life. These migrants are moving into stable neighboring nations mostly
Western Europe. This huge increase in population movement is adding to economic pressures and
could potentially collapse the system. Today, a stabile global economy is heavily reliant on every
individual actor countries slowly succumbing to volatility and destabilization are a liability to our
globe s economic well being. It is becoming a necessity to look back at our global successes in
stabilizing a region s economy and the factors that lead to these successes. Within the past century, a
major reconstruction and reorganization of an economic system occurred in Germany after WWII.
From 1945 to 1960, West Germanywent from an economic money pit to a necessary asset to
secure Western civilization. This paper will discuss and analyze the factors that lead to West
Germany becoming the economic powerhouse of Western Europe, but will not include the effects

Manifest Destiny Symbolism
Manifest Destiny was an idea expressed during west ward expansion. It was the belief that God
ordained that Americans must travel from coast to coast. Americans were also supposed to share
their light to the primitive natives. Natives in the photo are showed in the darker side of the
painting. They are fleeing from the giant angel heading towards them. The angel in the middle of
the painting carrying a book and telegraph wires to insinuate their intellectual dominance. The
painting tries to show how in the early to mid 19th century Americans believed God is always on
their side and justifies everything they do from taking land to racism. In the painting, the big angel
stands out at the center intending to portray God s support of western expansion. This is done by
putting the angel smack in the center and having multiple shapes draw the eye to it. For example,
the mountain range in the background of the photo makes a triangle that has the angel where the
summit of the mountain should be. Also, the angel is carrying telegraph lines which make the
observer look at the angel. The angel is facing west towards unconquered land and seems to almost
be pointing towards that land. That land is also in the dark. Behind the angle is bright lightwhich
draws the eye. The angel is bringing light to the land it touches. This light is the light of
knowledge and God s blessing, which comes from the background of the painting. Manifest mean

Abstract The purpose of this paper is to provide a written report of the five part M M project. Part
one was sampling. We were to purchase 3 bags of M M and record the color counts of each bag
in an Excel spread sheet. For part two we calculated the sample proportions for each color, the
mean number of candies per1.69oz bag, created a histogram for the number of candies per bag, use
Excel to compute the descriptive statisticsfor the total number of candies per bag and summarize
the information. In part three we located the 95% confidence interval for the proportion of blue,
orange, green, yellow, red and brown. For part four we tested claims for percentages of each color.

Human Connections With The Land
Human Connections with the Land
The life sustaining bond of human beings with the land has a strong connection. Centuries have
gone by... throughout the many years, humans have relied on the land to provide, evolve, help
survive, and move forward with their lives. The land provides for humans in a non costly manner.
The land provides humans free shelter. For example, Humans use the dirt we walk on to build
shelter. The Earth provides humans natural resources, such as water from lakes, streams and rain.
The land gives humans bountiful, healthy nourishing food. The Earth provides free healthcare for
every living creature. The land has a bond with humans because the land provides natural resources,
it provides shelter, and it evolves the human body.
The Earth was formed about 4.54 billion years ago in one in many galaxies. After many years
have passed the Earth has evolved and land was created. Many species have formed also the life of
nature. The land provides humans nutrients and resources for people to survive, such as nourishing
foods and materials for building shelter.
The life sustaining bond between humans and the land is that the land provides humans with many
things that they need in order to survive and thrive with for the future. The land provides us with
water, meat, vegetables, medicinal herbs, materials for shelter, and much more. This is what
connects humans to the land.

deeper influence in people s lives. Now days fashion show parts of individual s identities, which

Identity can be defined as a form of social presentation that shows a relationship between an
individual and an social world. There are many other reasons that an individual the need to express
themselves and their identity and they mainly revolve around issues like social status, economic
class, gender, sexual orientation, age, race, ethnicity, religious condition, recreation and
individualism. With the use of fashion individuals we can either show or no show factors of their
identities. This is done by transmitting visual messages about themselves, and according to Bennett
Fashion and visual appearances play a considerable part on informing notions of commonality
(2005: 96). With the help of fashionable items, Individuals demonstrated their memberships to a
particular social group, and their distance from groups who held a lower social position (Bennett,
2005: 100). This can refer to Thorstein Veblen theory of conspicuous consumption that by
consuming fashionable goods. The term refers to consumers who buy expensive items to display

Nightmare Scenarios
How Do You Survive a Nightmare Scenario without Any Skills or Training?
A previous article talked about the lack of basic survival skills among Millennials, and how
technology has replaced certain physical skills that some in older generations took for granted.
The technology was there so why not use it right, if technology allows you to use a chainsaw to cut
down a tree why would you use an ax, or if we went back in time 3,500 years you may have used a
bronze ax.

lonely desolate road can be one, getting lost on a short hike, or a sudden weather event leaves you

However, let s talk about basic wilderness survival skills or the lack thereof. What does it take to

Part A Sole Proprietorship: A type of business that is owned by and run by one person with no
legal difference between the business and the owner. It is easy to form with no cost or time to

owner can be established not allowing a partner. Also, unlimited liability puts the owner s
personal assets in jeopardy with the creditors. В·LIABILITY The owner is held responsible for
all debts and expenses accrued by the company via the concept of unlimited liability. If the
expenses and debts aren t satisfied, the owner of the business can be sued for breach of contract.

incident on December 28, 2010. (Cavalier, 2015) Bangor Daily News reported that eight

Effects Of The Sakoku Policy On Japan
Sakoku was the policy introduced to Japan in medieval times. Sakoku translates to a country in
chains or the lock up of a country . This policy proclaimed that no foreigner or Japanese could
enter or leave the country, without the threat of death. The Tokugawa Shogunate, under
Tokugawa Iemitsu, created this policy as well as an array of other edicts and policies to prevent
foreigners and Japanese alike from entering or leaving Japan. These were established and put into
action in 1633 1639 and remained in effect until 1853 when Matthew Perry and the Americans
forced the Japanese rulers to remove these laws. However, these laws did not entirely isolate Japan,
as some trade was allowed just under tight control. The Shoguns of medieval Japan... Show more

However, there were some unforeseen adverse effects. These effects have influenced and affected
Japan as a nation and culture, enriching the culture and lifestyle that we associate with Japan today.
Japan s isolation allowed them to develop their culture without the influence of other countries or
religions. The economy of Japan also flourished during the Sakoku period. The long period of
stability and peace was central to the economic boom. Moreover, the Japanese culture became
richer because of the sakoku. Without foreign influence, they further developed their own unique
culture. For example, traditional rituals and customs. The Japanese politics were also affected by
the sakoku; the emperor continued to appoint the shoguns to keep his subjects in and foreigners
out. These foreign traders and Christians were not welcomed by authorities. This was because they
were afraid they would cause an uprise in the feudal system. On the other hand, this isolation had a
negative effect because overtaxing and the rice payment continued. Sakoku also adversely affected
the environment; the most noticeable impact was widespread deforestation. Without the ability to
import wood, there was not enough for every person in the country. With an ever growing need for

Have you ever noticed that people and animals can relate with each other in many different
ways? It s probably never even crossed your mind. But,now you are reading my story and that
thought will cross your mind every second, every minute, and every hour of your life. In my three

meaning of people and animals relating are Monkey Master , from My Life With the Chimpanzees
, and Black Cowboy,Wild Horses.
If you were asked What is a painter? the first word that will come out of your mouth is person.
But people aren t the only living thing able to paint . Monkey Master is a perfect representation of
how people relate to animals because in this story a monkey named Congo can paint. Congo was a
monkey who opened people s eyes on not excluding animals but understanding their capability. He
relates to humans because when artists or regular people are in the middle of their artwork and it

Financial Statements Of American Heart Association
The financial statements of American Heart Association convey valuable information to outside
users about the organization and how it utilizes financial resources. The objective of this essay is to
identify five things that can be learned about an organization from their financial statements.
The first thing that can be learned about every nonprofit comes from reviewing the Statement of
Activities and the following Statement of Functional Expenses. These statements describe a broad
categorization of the different program related services provided and the supporting services
needed to run those programs. Expenses related to these programs are defined as those directly
relating to the organization s mission or purpose. For AHA, their programs include research, public
health education, professional education and training, and community services. Supporting services
are those that do not directly relate to the mission or purpose of the organization, and therefore can
be further split into services required to generate future contributions and services to run the
administrative side of the organization. The Statement of Functional Expenses provides a
breakdown of natural expenses (salaries, rent, professional fees, etc.) by the different program and
supporting services. This allows the user to see a breakdown of the salaries expense number by
program, fundraising, and administrative staff. A common tool for comparing and evaluating
nonprofits is to compare program expenses to

The Effects Of Obesity On The United States
An epidemic is happening in the United States of America; obesity is on the rise. The United
States is currently is second in the world s most obese countries with more than two thirds of
adults being overweight ( Overweight and Obesity Statistics ). Countermeasures to promote a
healthier living style are on the rise, also. For instance, Michelle Obama s Let s Move program
promotes eating healthy food and increasing exercise. The NFL promotes sixty minutes of play
for children each day to promote healthier living and establishing an active lifestyle. However,
the one area of healthy living promotion is lacking and that is food information. The United
States must change their source of food information; the food label must be changed. Currently
the food label is inaccurate, loose in regulations, and hard to read. By changing the food label to
an easier, clearer, and more accessible source of information, then the American public will have
easier access to information. Furthermore, the American public will have an easier time
choosing healthier options towards food. First off, in order to revise the food label, we need to
understand how it is supposed to work. The food label was develop, and is currently regulated by
the Food and Drug Administration since 1993 (Rosso Grossman, Food Labels ). The food label is

Policy And Its Effect On Public Services
Policy and its effect on Public services Economists employed by the government are involved in
implementing policies, which were especially established to meet government s objectives that are
very often multidimensional. There are four very fundamental objectives for viable economy,
including decreasing the unemployment rates in certain regions, lower or stabilise the inflation,
constant economic growth and a satisfactory balance of payments position. The UK economy
continues to suffer from a number of underlying structural weaknesses. The government is now set

There are many questions what arise from the topic of the economic growth. For instance, how can
nations speed up their economic growth? There are many successful strategies to self sustained
economic growth. According to Keynesian policy prescriptions, long term growth can be achieved
through structural policies such as supply side policies, which would improve the long term
performance of the economy. Supply side policies emphasize incentives and tax cuts as a means of
increasing economic growth. Such policy was espoused by President Reagan in the USA, but also
Prime Minister Thatcher in Great Britain, (Nordhaus Samuelson, 2005). Supply side economists
argue, that high taxes lead people to reduce their labour and capital supply. Arthur Laffer has
suggested that the high tax rates might actually lower tax revenues, (Nordhaus Samuelson, 2005).
This Laffer curve preposition holds that high tax rates shrink the tax base because they reduce
economic activity. However, mainstream, economists doubt the Laffer preposition that cutting tax
rates would increase tax revenues, ref. They believed that there s a need for a radical restructuring
of the tax system called supply side tax cut, REF. According to this philosophy, reform should
improve incentives by lowering marginal tax rates . This would lead to lowering tax burden on high
income individuals, but also encourage productivity and supply

The History of Insane Asylums Essay
What comes to mind when you hear the words insane asylum ? Do such terms as lunatic, crazy,
scary, or even haunted come to mind? More than likely these are the terminology that most of us
would use to describe our perception of insane asylums. However, those in history that had a heart s
desire to treat the mentally ill compassionately and humanely had a different viewpoint. Insane
asylums were known for their horrendous treatment of the mentally ill, but the ultimate purpose in
the reformation of insane asylums in the nineteenth century was to improve the treatment for the
mentally ill by providing a humane and caring environment for them to reside. The mentally ill

This one swung the mentally ill person around while he/she was in a harness. This treatment

and unbelievable. In the eighteenth century at Bethlem Royal Hospital in London, the public
could pay a penny for a privilege to watch the freaks ; they could poke the caged patients with a
long stick (Taylor). Overcrowding was a huge issue in the insane asylums. In 1900 based on the
authority of the Lunacy Commissioners report, it was stated that there was one registered lunatic
per every three hundred people. (Chapman 164). Danvers State Hospital was built in 1878 to
house 500 patients. This institution had over 2300 patients at its peak in the 1940s (Taylor). The
over population of insane asylums began to deteriorate them and make them some of the most
horrible places that existed. The conditions in these institutions were barely livable. The workers
were also mean to the patients and did many awful things to them. There were too many patients
and not enough nurses and doctors. This made the nurses work harder and put a lot more stress on
them ( Pennhurst State ). In the 1950s, the Trans Allegheny Lunatic Asylum was occupied by over
2500 people. However, it was built to occupy only 250 people. The conditions were so filthy that
occupants began to get sick and die. Some people were euthanized during this time

Playing against a Computer or a Human Research
Background and significance Individuals participating in an interaction perceive one another as
rational agents who possess beliefs, desires and intentions that might be different than their own.
Assumptions made about these mental states are used to interpret and predict behavior. Conferring
such attributes to an agent (human, computer, whatever) has been described as adopting an
intentional stance (Dennet, 1996). Adopting an intentional stance is part of our broader ability to
mentalize which involves representing and attributing mental states to oneself and others. Research
concerned with understanding the neural system of mentalizing has indentified a network of
regions that minimally involve the temporoparietal region (TPJ) and the medial prefrontal cortex
(MPFC) (Abu Akel and Shamay Tsoory, 2011). However, it is not completely clear the extent to
which humans readily mentalize (or adopt an intentional stance) with other humans or non humans
(e.g., computers). Thus an important goal of this study is to investigate how the neural network
associated with adopting an intentional stance is modulated under various interaction conditions in
which the interacting partner and the context are varied. Several studies employing various
interactive games have been conducted to uncover the neural basis involved in adopting an
intentional stance. These studies followed a similar script according to which participants were led
to believe that they are playing either against a

This report will provide the Sustainability Appraisal in relation to the findings of the Baseline Study

3SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
Sustainable development is at the heart of the National Planning Policy Framework of 2012, and is
defined as meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations
to meet their own needs. Sustainable development includes three key pillars social, environmental
and economic, however in reality these issues often overlap and do not fit directly into one
category (Hopwood, Mellor and O Brien, 2005).
To ensure the concept of sustainable development is integrated into development plans, a
Sustainability Appraisal (SA) shall be conducted which requires that economic, environmental and
social matters are taken into account (Adur District Council, 2011). This integration will ensure that
future development meets the needs of local people whilst ensuring a healthy economy and
environment.

Essentialist Theory Of The Queer Theory
sexuality often impacts the success of claims made by bi sexual refugees. The author argues that
this dominant understanding jettisons complex subjective positions and disregards varying
realities. The refugee determination system misinterprets and misidentifies the lived experiences of
bisexual claimants because of this knowledge, further disadvantaging this group of refugees.
Rehaag observes that individuals seeking asylum on the basis of oppression for their bisexual
tendencies have significantly higher rejection rates compared to other claimants.
To investigate this assertion, Rehaag uses the queer theory as the main theoretical framework.
According to Rehaag, the Queer theory is an interdisciplinary medium that examines the complex
interactions between sexuality and gender, and conceptualizes such views of sexual orientation as
essentialist. The essentialist view dichotomizes individuals as being either straight or gay on the
basis of early childhood psychological factors or biological traits. Consequently, this essentialist
argument comprehends sexual orientation as unchangeable and inflexible. Essentialists may, in
selected instances, acknowledge groups beyond gay and straight, such as transgendered and
bisexual individuals. Queer theorists reject the essentialist view arguing that these categories are
not inflexible. Rather, these categories are regularly recreated through socio historical patterns or

The On The Gaming Industry
The gaming industry took America so far in entertainment for generations of young and old to
play for decades to come. Starting from one of the developers of the atomic bomb used in World
War II to the present day console wars of PC, Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo games have been
played. Computer engineers took steps and chances with their ideas, making them into
successful business men in a brand new industry, creating new products of imagination, science,
and reality. If there were no video games modern day products and small industries such as apple
would not exist since Atari hired Steve Jobs to come work for them and not pushing him to the
limit of the apple computer. New worlds were in place for developers and customers to explore
and enjoy. The developer of the atomic bomb and first person to take a chance was William
Higinbotham. His game started in Brookhaven in which he took charge and calling it Tennis for
Two. His invention was simulated on a screen was a vertical side view of a tennis court showing
the edge floor with the edge of a floor with the edge of the net perpendicular to it (Games...). The
game system came with two controls having one knob and button on each one giving players to hit
a small dot representing the ball moving back and forth. The actual device was connected to an
oscilloscope having a simple design, although Higinbotham worked with technical specialist Robert
V. Dvorak, who built it and Alexander Elia is designing, designs the blueprints.

Building a Gaming Computer
Building a gaming computer may be an intimidating endeavour, but in all actuality with a little
hard work anyone can be a whiz at putting together a gaming computer. Why build a custom
gaming PC? Well it ll save money, and give the builder a great experience. It s always fun to
learn how different things work. The price of a top of the line retail gaming computer runs from
two thousand on up to five thousand dollars and beyond, a monitor alone could cost one thousand
dollars. The two types of gaming PC builds are , the hardcore gamerbuild which will cost a little
extra, and the casual gamer build which isn t as expensive; moreover, the steps in building a
gaming PC are: creating a budget, researching what the builder/user wants the PC to... Show more

If the user of the PC is a hardcore gamer and he/she wants the games to play on high or ultra
graphics settings without looking glitchy, or lagging out, then, the graphics card, RAM, and
CPU are going to be the main focus of spending. Although if the user is just a casual gamer who
doesn t care about the look of the games he/she plays, and just really wants a computer for
everyday browsing then the bare essentials are all that is needed. For, a hardcore build the base
budget is in the range of twelve hundred to fifteen hundred dollars. The budget for a casual
gaming PC is four hundred to six hundred dollars. One big rule when deciding a budget,
NEVER try to save money on the power supply. The power supply is the heart of the PC, it gives
the computer life. Without the power supply the other components would not be anything but
metal and plastic. The first portion of the computer build for either casual or hardcore, is the
CPU. There are two major companies to pick from, Intel and AMD.The only difference in the two
is the compatibility with certain motherboards. Whichever is picked, Intel or AMD, will help
narrow the decisions on the motherboard, which will in turn help figure out the RAM needed.
After the decision has been made of one company or the other, the next step is to pick which CPU
from either company is the right one for the builder. Intel has the new

Evaluation Of A Project And The Developer
During the early steps of the projects until reaching commercial and financial close, the parties
initiating the project and the developer will have to make critical decision to structure the project.
An important part of the negotiation will focus on the risk allocation to the various stakeholders of
the project in order to satisfy the prim objectives and drivers of the parties involved and distribute
the riskto the party most able to manage and bear them.
The risk allocation will require some transfer of risk ownership between the parties developing the
project and third parties or other stakeholders in order to assign the risk identified to the party in
the best position to deal with it. This should take in consideration the nature of ... Show more

In this regard, the recent researches and academic works tend to suggest some adjustment to the
risk allocation between the main parties public and private in order to achieve value for money in
the provision of a service.
Risk allocation in connection with the individual perspectives, goals and requirements of the
various project stakeholders
In the structuring phase of a project, the developers, whether directly or with the assistance of a
mandated advisor will develop a network of contract supporting the project initiative. If the
project is based on non recourse finance or limited recourse, the developer will aim to set a
Special Propose Company initially bearing all the risks involved in the project. Then, a set of
contract to provide the main components of the project purpose delivering a service required by
the public sector. For merchant project (service not required or tendered for the public service),
most of the consideration below will apply but the public entity will be substituted by the market
needs. In this situation, the private sector will directly contract with the SPV which is a private
entity for the delivery of a service.
The developer and later the SPV will aim to allocate all the risk identified to third party involved
in the project through contract terms agreed for the scope of supply of the various contract. The
main transfer of risks are achieved via the key contract intending to secure the

Don John In Shakespeare s Much Ado About Nothing
Stories are a reflection of real life. We can see real life messages and examples of how to act
through the actions of the characters. Don John from Shakespeare s Much Ado About Nothing
is not a good influence, but a careful reader can still use him as an example of how a godly
Christian should not behave. Don John is morose while God calls us to be joyful, he attempts to
cause strife when God tells us to live in harmony with others, and he flees and does not take
responsibility for his actions while Christ freely took on responsibility for the actions of all
mankind. Don John himself states that he is naturally sullen. He uses his natural bad temper as
to excuse himself from taking responsibility for his actions. Don John says, it must not be
denied, but I am a plain dealing villain(Much). The bible tells us in Thessalonians 5:16 18,
Always be joyful. Never stop praying. Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God s will for
you who belong to Christ Jesus. Don John is a morose person and does not strive to be better as

Examples Of False Love In Romeo And Juliet
In modern society, love is a buzzing topic. Whether it be true love or the mushy Valentine s Day
cards, love is all around. Love is something the human mind thrives on, for it creates a sense of
calm and peace, thus making it human nature to yearn for love. In literature, there are many love
stories . William Shakespeare, often called a true expert on love(based on his many plays, sonnets,
etc.), has written many of these love stories . One of the most well known stories is Romeo and
Juliet. Romeo and Juliet, often remarked as one of Shakespeare s greatest works, is a perfect
example of false love. Throughout the course of the play, it is revealed in many ways this is a

Throughout the course of the play, it is revealed in many ways this is a story of artificial
devotion in which Juliet is in love, and Romeo is merely infatuated. Although Shakespeare is
known to many as a love expert , the story of Romeo and Juliet is equivalent to an impersonal
Valentine s Day card. Love is all around, but true love is something very hard to find. Due to the
lack of support for a truly love based relationship, it is easily seen that this is not a case of true love,

The Influence Of Nathaniel Bacon On The American Revolution
Historians tend to view events in a black or white approach. That kind of thinking would
describe Nathaniel Bacon battling for liberty and against English oppression, as paving the way
for the American Revolution. In reality, Bacon was an Indian hating landowner who was part of
the nobility, just not part of Gov. Berkeley s in crowd although he was a relative of Berkeley.
Gov. Berkeley of Virginia and his cronies in the great planter oligarchy [1] ran every aspect of
life in Virginia. Berkeley grabbed control of the House of Burgess, and he and his buddies got the
best land, filled most of the public offices and monopolized the fur trade. Besides reinstituting poll
taxes, the governor also began religious persecution of Quakers and... Show more content on

Berkeley prohibited trade with Indians without permission, and trade was conducted in forts
which were controlled by Berkeley cronies. He sanctioned unprovoked attacks against friendly
tribes, instituted trading restrictions and a general policy of all out war against Indians which he
began in 1675. Indian retaliated by raiding some frontier plantations, one which was owned by
Nathaniel Bacon. Instead of trying to end the wars, Berkeley built defensive forts, which
prolonged it. [3]Bacon s plantation and the plantations of his friend s, were unprotected and
isolated on the western frontier. They asked for protection against Indian attacks and raids on their
plantations and petitioned for an armed troop. Berkeley denied and then outlawed all such
petitions. Bacon, along with two other landowners decided to raise their own army and fight the
Indians themselves. He began a march to track hostile Indians, killing friendly Indians by mistake.
According to Rothbard (2011), when the three founders, Bacon, Byrd, and Crew, and their friends
ran into some militiamen at Jordan s Point, the militia decided to mutiny and follow Bacon. When
Bacon came back home most of the Virginians viewed him as a hero.

and Harry s story became known as a literary phenomenon. Since publication of the first novel,
and its subsequent popularity among young readers, there have been some who have contested
the books, ostracizing them because they believe the books promote the occult and make
witchcraft desirable. Lord Voldemort, the most powerful and evil dark wizard for one hundred
years, is often used as an example of why people believe that the books entice readers into the
world of Satanism and the occult. They also believe that because Harry sometimes has to lie, cheat,

In The Wisdom of Harry Potter, it is stated that truth telling, submission to authority, and following
the rules are not always the moral thing to do in regard to tensions between rules and

A Reflection On My Values Speech
By reflecting upon my Values Speech, I will be more aware of what skills I have already
accomplished and what skills I need to improve on in order to prepare myself better for the next
big speech as well as to further improve my public speaking skills. Now that I look back at the
recording of my presentation, I clearly saw strengths that were shown, but there were also
weaknesses that I revealed, diminishing the overall powerful effect that my speechshould have
gave. As I watched Amy Cuddy s TED talk called Your body language
shapes who you are , I
learned more about body language and what I should ve done when I presented my Values Speech.
Throughout my reflection, I will discuss my strengths that I portrayed during my speech such as
pacing and eye contact as well as the limitations, for instance, stuttering and abruptly finishing my
sentences, and then I will finish off my reflection with the levels of confidence and body language I
portrayed.
First off, there were many strengths that I believed were demonstrated within my Values Speech
such as pacing and eye contact with my fellow classmates, but despite the strengths that were
seen, the weaknesses of stuttering and finishing sentences abruptly created a weak feeling at the
end of my presentation. As I watched the recording of my presentation on repeat, I noticed that
my pacing was very well executed. I didn t speak too fast nor did I speak too slow, which is
good because my classmates were able to follow along with what I was saying. Not only that,
but I also provided eye contact to my classmates, showing that I was well prepared and did not
need to read my note cards as much. Of course, with strengths, there were also weaknesses
portrayed. I often stuttered at a couple of phrases because of my anxiety and I would also finish
some of my sentences abruptly, leaving a poor execution. I realized that once I began saying a
certain sentence and mess up mid way through, I would end the sentence with words that wouldn t
be as clear. Now knowing my weaknesses and strengths, I will better prepare myself for my next
upcoming speech by practicing my speeches with more word choices when I say it verbally,
allowing myself to become more aware of the variety of

Gender Roles In My Antonia
My ГЃntonia takes place in a time in which gender roles were more enforced and more
commonplace than they are today. Women were expected to take care of the children and the

such a prominent aspect of the era, many characters worked against them. Willa Catherportrays
these characters in a positive light because of their deviations from genderroles rather than despite
them.

the fields just much as she works in the house, but she never expresses disdain for this fact. Rather,
she enjoys it, stating Oh, better that I work out of doors than in a house...I

Patrick Stewart Macbeth
Director Rupert Goold created a very unconventional version of Macbeth. He gives the setting a
Soviet Union feel a makes Macbeth s character almost like Joseph Stalin in brutality and
ruthlessness. The majority of the production takes place in these underground bunkers making you
feel like they are in World War II. Goold put so much thought into this rendition of the
Shakespearean play so you can assume he out as much though as who he casted as the main roles
and how they should portray them. Some things about his character I liked, however, I did have
many complaints. Goold chose Patrick Stewart as Macbeth,Kate Fleetwood as Lady Macbeth, and
Sophie Hunter, Polly Frame, and Niamh McGrady as the three witches. Patrick Stewart is a great
actor, but I did find it hard to get past his age. He was way too old for the part and was subpar
compared to other movies I have seen him in. He plays Macbeth as a deranged psychopath were
as I see Macbeth more as an arrogant man who became drunk on power. He has obviously gone
mad by the end of the play, but Stewart s adaptation is disturbed. Stewart nevertheless brought a
fantastic element of suspense to the film. He is the best angry sandwich maker I have ever seen.

Video Games And The Video Game Industry
According to several studies, women are now making up a significant portion of the gaming
demographic, but the industry hasn t done much to make them feel welcome. During the last
decade, the mainstream video game industry has seemed to operate under the same apparent
assumptions: girls don t play big action games, boys like the sexualization of girls in video games
and won t play as a female character unless she is heavily sexualized, and that girls play video
games for the attention of boys. These assumptions are what allows the gaming industry to continue
to focus on their male players, particularly young men, despite the fact that the number of women
playing games today may someday soon rival the number of men.
For many years, the video game industry catered to the tastes of young men with their overly
sexualized, one dimensional female characters, and their beefy male protagonists (to identify
with or aspire to). Of course there are exceptions, as there are with anything. There have been
many fully realized, non sexualized, and interesting female characters, notably more modern
characters such as Chloe Price in Dontnod s second game, Life is Strange, Amita in Far Cry 4, and
Square Enix s more recent portrayals of Lara Croft in Tomb Raider (2013), and Rise of the Tomb
Raider, but despite the occasional good example, there are many poor examples to go along;

Global Climate Change Triggered By Global Warming
The article, Global Climate Change Triggered by Global Warming by Stuart D. Jordan, seeks to
provide evidence that global climate change caused by global warming is currently in affect and
requires immediate attention and action. Jordan claims that the Earth s climate has been
undergoing significant and alarming changes for the past thirty years. He provided evidence based
on observations, theoretical models, and calculations made by other researchers.
The article addressed the increase in temperature over the years and claimed 2005 to be the
warmest year in the last century. There is much fear, as temperature continues to increase, that
possible ice reduction and melted ice sheets and glaciers in the Artic, Antarctica, and Greenland
may occur and cause a rise in sea levels. If the Antarctic ice sheet melts, the sea level is calculated
to rise two hundred feet, while if the ice sheet in Greenland melts, the sea level is calculated to
rise seven meters, approximately twenty feet. The rise in sea level is affecting coastal areas.
Many coastal areas are expected to sooner or later be flooded or below sea level. This can have
terrible consequences for high populated coastal areas. Another problem that global warming may
have on the world s oceans is the possible change in the global oceanic conveyor belt . The
conveyor belt controls the ocean s currents which has impact on regional climate change. However,
scientists have yet to agree on whether or not reduction of flow has

Then, we have internal users of accounting information, such as employees and the various types of

Revolutions In The 1820s
The revolutions of the 1820s and the 1830s were based on the power struggle between liberals
and conservative and motivated by liberalism and nationalism. In France, the Battle at the Rue de
Rohan on July 29, 1830, occurred due to the results of the election of July 25, 1830, which created
a more liberal Chamber of Deputies. This enraged King Charles X, an ultraroyalist, who wanted
absolute monarchic rule. Charles X implemented the Four Ordinances which, restricted freedom of
the press, dissolved the recently elected Chamber of Deputies, and called for new elections under a
franchise restricted to the wealthiest people in the country. Deliberately making it so that the
monarchy would have absolute control. The working class, infuriated with the Four Ordinances,
took the streets of Parisand built barricades; whilst, Charles X called the troops. On August 2
Charles X abdicated the throne and was exiled in England and Louis Philippe was named King of
the French, marking a shift in power from one of absolute monarchical control to a more liberal
government, labeled the July Monarchy. Whereas, in the German speaking lands the Hambach
Festival took place on May 27, 1832. Students marched to the Hambach castle, influenced by the
French Revolution two years prior. Radical and democratic leaders led a protest that was attended
by 30,000 people, they called for a republican government, rule of law, and freedom of expression.

  • 2. The Cultural Culture Of Japan In the world today, we are exposed to many different cultures; America is a great example of this. It is a giant melting pot full of many unique people who bring their cultures from around the world. Thanks to them, we have little parts of towns that are chock full of their culture, like China Town and Little Italy. We also have them to thank for all the different types of food and styles of cooking that they have brought over. But what about the cultures of other countries, have Americans influenced their culturelike they did to ours? One country that really interested me in answering this question was in Japan. Japan is packed full of culture from their old traditions of their new futuristic culture and has Americans have any part in their pop culture transformation? From the earliest of times Japan was full of culture. The Nara period, which is the years of the history that covers from 710 AD to 794 AD, was a big year for writers. During this period some of Japan s literary monuments were written, including the Kojiki and Nihongi, the Man yoshu, also known as the Collection of Ten Thousand Leaves, and the Kaifuso. Another major cultural development of the era was the establishment of Buddhism in Japan. Buddhism was first introduced in the sixth century, years 501 AD to 600 AD, but had a mixed reception until the Nara period. Shomu and his Fujiwara consort were fervent Buddhists and actively promoted the spread of Buddhism, making it the guardian of the state and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Ignorance In Chickamauga, By Ambrose Bierce Somewhere in the world, a war is being fought. Blood is being spilled, screams and gunshots are filling up the sky as lives are being taken. This brutal, violent, and horrific experience is separated from society by a wall of ignorance and misconception. In Chickamauga , Ambrose Bierce breaks down this barrier by using the deaf mute child as a way to symbolize society s ignorance and misconception towards war. One way that the deaf child is being symbolized is him being a deaf mute (4). Being deaf hinders the child s ability to comprehend sound, which prevents him from experiencing what war truly is. During, his trip to the forest, the boy sobbed himself to sleep (1). It wasn t until later that the boy discovers what happens while he is sleeping: Almost within a stone s throw of where he lay they had fought a battle; but all unheard by him were the roar of the musketry, the shock of the cannon, the thunder of the captains and the shouting. He had slept through it all (3). Due to the boy not being able to hear, he is able to sleep through and completely ignore the ongoing battle nearby. As loud and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The boy imagines the ongoing battle mostly as a fun interest, until suddenly, His little world swung half around; the points of the compass were reversed. He recognized the blazing building as his own home! (3 4). At this point, the child realizes what has happened, but it is not over yet, There, conspicuous in the light of the conflagration, lay the dead body of a woman (4). At this point, the boy inherits a full understanding of what war really is. Throughout the whole story he has not come upon this until it affects him personally. Bierce uses this as a way to denote how society is similar to boy in the way that they do not completely understand war unless it has affected ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. I Will Revisit Russon s Definition Of Memory, And Three... In this paper I will revisit Russon s definition of memory, and three of the aspects that he presents as important in the memory process. I will also argue that our body play an important role for our remembering, as does the objects we interact with. As well as present my position on Russon description of memory demonstrating that Russon s description is indeed relatable to the actual human experience. Russon s definition of memory is not subjected to one main idea, but rather an intertwining of related ideas pertaining to experience. He views memory as, What we experience as the determinateness of objects that communicates to us what we can and cannot do, (Russon 41). To emphasize, we experience our world through interactions with the world s objects. The contact made with these objects provides an identity for them that later communicates to us about ourselves. Russon present this idea of memory based on two types of memory, implicit and explicit. Implicit memory are memories that we remember in part, while explicit memory are those that we remember completely. An example that Russon gives in another instance that connects to this is the idea of him terminating his lease and having a few weeks remaining is inscribed in everything within his apartment. Each object represents the identity of the future commitment of moving whether pervasively or occasionally. However Russon thinks that for us to remember there are certain aspects that needs to be involve. First is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Software Testing Is A Technical Task Art of Software Testing Prof.Sheetal N.Khanore Bunts Sangha`s S.M.Shetty College Science, Commerce and Management Studies, Abstract Software testing is a technical task, but it also involves some important considerations of economics and human psychology. In technical aspects it is the process of analyzing a software item to detect the differences between existing and required conditions (that is defects/errors/bugs) and to evaluate the features of the software item . A software error occurs when the program does not do, what its end user reasonably expects it to do. • 7. The “Roaring 20’S” And The “Jazz Age” Produced Great... The roaring 20 s and the Jazz Age produced great literature. The characters and plots were often held together by images, ideas, sounds or words that help a reader understand an idea and help to explain the central idea of a literary work. F. Scott Fitzgerald s The Great Gatsby is full of rich symbols. Like many of the most interesting symbols, the green light changes and develops its meaning through the novel. The green light that is displayed at the end of Daisy and Tom s East egg dock, is the symbol of Gatsby s hopes and dreams. In Chapter 1, Nick observes Gatsby one night: Something in his leisurely movements and the secure position of his feet upon the lawn suggested that it was Mr. Gatsby himself, come out to determine what share... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Compared to the great distance that separated him from Daisy it had seemed very near to her, almost touching her. It had seemed as close as a star to the moon. Now it was again a green light on a dock. His count of enchanted objects had diminished by one (93). The symbol changes for Gatsby because the present Daisy is different than the Daisy from the past that he fell in love with in Louisville. In addition to this strong literary symbol, another great one is Dr. TJ Eckleburg and the Valley of Ashes. The eyes of Doctor T. J. Eckleburg are: blue and gigantic their retinas are one yard high. They look out of no face, but, instead, from a pair of enormous yellow spectacles which pass over a nonexistent nose. Evidently, some wild wag of an oculist set them there to fatten his practice in the borough of Queens, and then sank down himself into eternal blindness, or forgot them and moved away. But his eyes dimmed a little by many paintless days under sun and rain, brood on over the solemn dumping ground (24). Some readers may pick up that the billboard represents God s eyes looking down on the society judging America s morals.Instead, throughout the novel, Fitzgerald suggests that the mere essence of Dr. TJ Eckleburg symbolizes deprivation of the American soul. The billboard is placed there to encourage business; however, it lays untidy and abandoned. Also with the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. The Transformation of Jean Valjean Exemplified in Les... All humans have different morals that change based on their environment and circumstance. Jean Valjean, in the novel Les Miserables(1961), changes from someone with confused morals to a man with more morals than most whom with respect learns to love and share. The protagonist s transformation begins when the bishop recognizes Jean Valjeans human soul that is capable of goodness. When he is put out into the streets, Valjean goes from place to place being rejected for being a convict until he meets the bishop who sees him as a common person, That men saw his mask, but the bishop saw his face (75). It was a room very well fitted with mahogany furniture, ugly as all furniture of that kind is, and the walls covered with shilling paper. They could see nothing but two candlesticks of antique form that stood on the mantle, and appeared to be silver (54). The candlesticks are meaningful and important to Valjean, which makes these objects symbolic. The candlesticks have an even deeper meaning than anything else, because the bishop gives them to Valjean as a symbol for change and the promise he makes but never recalls. • 12. The Introduction of the Electric Guitar According to the Smithsonian Institute, electronic amplification is one of the most successful innovations brought around at the end of the 1930s. The 1920s had a rise in the popularity of dance music, and the recording industry was getting started. This was also the start of the Big Band Era (guitaristsource.com). Guitarmakers started experimenting to develop a new, louder, guitar. Electrical amplification was developed by the radio industry in the 1920s (howstuffworks.com). In 1931, George Beauchamp and Adolf Rickenbacker would go on to develop an electromagnetic pickup they would later use to create the electric guitar. This first model would go on to be called the Frying Pan , because of its resemblance to the cookware. This first model was often played flat on the lap (howstuffworks.com). Eventually, electric guitars began commercial production in the 1930s (Goertzen 435). In 1939, Les Paul, an acoustic guitarist, developed a new type of electric guitar by placing the old pickup on a solid block of wood. This new solid body guitar didn t have the feedback problems that the hollow bodied electric guitars had. Also, it had a greater sustain than earlier models (howstuffworks.com). In order for an electric guitar to work, it needs a pickup and an amplifier. Pickups are electro magnetic pieces on the guitar s body, and they are usually found on the guitar s body in between the bridge and the fretboard. Financial Statements Of American Heart Association The financial statements of American Heart Association convey valuable information to outside users about the organization and how it utilizes financial resources. The objective of this essay is to identify five things that can be learned about an organization from their financial statements. The first thing that can be learned about every nonprofit comes from reviewing the Statement of Activities and the following Statement of Functional Expenses. These statements describe a broad categorization of the different program related services provided and the supporting services needed to run those programs. Expenses related to these programs are defined as those directly relating to the organization s mission or purpose. For AHA, their programs include research, public health education, professional education and training, and community services. Supporting services are those that do not directly relate to the mission or purpose of the organization, and therefore can be further split into services required to generate future contributions and services to run the administrative side of the organization. The Statement of Functional Expenses provides a breakdown of natural expenses (salaries, rent, professional fees, etc.) by the different program and supporting services. This allows the user to see a breakdown of the salaries expense number by program, fundraising, and administrative staff. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There are many questions what arise from the topic of the economic growth. For instance, how can nations speed up their economic growth? There are many successful strategies to self sustained economic growth. According to Keynesian policy prescriptions, long term growth can be achieved through structural policies such as supply side policies, which would improve the long term performance of the economy. Supply side policies emphasize incentives and tax cuts as a means of increasing economic growth. Such policy was espoused by President Reagan in the USA, but also Prime Minister Thatcher in Great Britain, (Nordhaus Samuelson, 2005). Supply side economists argue, that high taxes lead people to reduce their labour and capital supply. Arthur Laffer has suggested that the high tax rates might actually lower tax revenues, (Nordhaus Samuelson, 2005). However, those in history that had a heart s desire to treat the mentally ill compassionately and humanely had a different viewpoint. Insane asylums were known for their horrendous treatment of the mentally ill, but the ultimate purpose in the reformation of insane asylums in the nineteenth century was to improve the treatment for the mentally ill by providing a humane and caring environment for them to reside. In the eighteenth century at Bethlem Royal Hospital in London, the public could pay a penny for a privilege to watch the freaks ; they could poke the caged patients with a long stick (Taylor). Overcrowding was a huge issue in the insane asylums. In 1900 based on the authority of the Lunacy Commissioners report, it was stated that there was one registered lunatic per every three hundred people. (Chapman 164). Danvers State Hospital was built in 1878 to house 500 patients. This institution had over 2300 patients at its peak in the 1940s (Taylor). The over population of insane asylums began to deteriorate them and make them some of the most horrible places that existed. The conditions in these institutions were barely livable. The workers were also mean to the patients and did many awful things to them. There were too many patients and not enough nurses and doctors. This made the nurses work harder and put a lot more stress on them ( Pennhurst State ). In the 1950s, the Trans Allegheny Lunatic Asylum was occupied by over 2500 people. • 35. Playing against a Computer or a Human Research Background and significance Individuals participating in an interaction perceive one another as rational agents who possess beliefs, desires and intentions that might be different than their own. Assumptions made about these mental states are used to interpret and predict behavior. Conferring such attributes to an agent (human, computer, whatever) has been described as adopting an intentional stance (Dennet, 1996). Adopting an intentional stance is part of our broader ability to mentalize which involves representing and attributing mental states to oneself and others. Research concerned with understanding the neural system of mentalizing has indentified a network of regions that minimally involve the temporoparietal region (TPJ) and the medial prefrontal cortex (MPFC) (Abu Akel and Shamay Tsoory, 2011). However, it is not completely clear the extent to which humans readily mentalize (or adopt an intentional stance) with other humans or non humans (e.g., computers). Thus an important goal of this study is to investigate how the neural network associated with adopting an intentional stance is modulated under various interaction conditions in which the interacting partner and the context are varied. Several studies employing various interactive games have been conducted to uncover the neural basis involved in adopting an intentional stance. These studies followed a similar script according to which participants were led to believe that they are playing either against a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 39. Essentialist Theory Of The Queer Theory sexuality often impacts the success of claims made by bi sexual refugees. The author argues that this dominant understanding jettisons complex subjective positions and disregards varying realities. The refugee determination system misinterprets and misidentifies the lived experiences of bisexual claimants because of this knowledge, further disadvantaging this group of refugees. Rehaag observes that individuals seeking asylum on the basis of oppression for their bisexual tendencies have significantly higher rejection rates compared to other claimants. To investigate this assertion, Rehaag uses the queer theory as the main theoretical framework. According to Rehaag, the Queer theory is an interdisciplinary medium that examines the complex interactions between sexuality and gender, and conceptualizes such views of sexual orientation as essentialist. The essentialist view dichotomizes individuals as being either straight or gay on the basis of early childhood psychological factors or biological traits. Consequently, this essentialist argument comprehends sexual orientation as unchangeable and inflexible. Essentialists may, in selected instances, acknowledge groups beyond gay and straight, such as transgendered and bisexual individuals. Queer theorists reject the essentialist view arguing that these categories are not inflexible. Rather, these categories are regularly recreated through socio historical patterns or structured social exchanges. Consequently, the queer theory ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

From the midnight book release parties to new movie releases to the new Wizarding World of Harry Potter theme park, fans, the world over, love Harry and can t seem to get enough of him. While scores of fans immerse themselves in the fantasy world of Harry Potter, there are some people that believe that Harry Potter is the work of the devil, and the world J.K. Rowling created entices readers to abandon God and pursue the occult. However, Harry Potter does not promote evil. Finally, in 1995, she finished the manuscript. Rowling found an agent, and he began the hunt for a publisher. Finally, in 1997, seven years after Harry became part of Rowling s life, his story was published, by Bloomsbury Publishers, for the children of Britain as Harry Potter and the Philosopher s Stone. Scholastic, Inc. purchased the American publication rights to the novels, and the first book was renamed Harry Potter and the Sorcerer s Stone for American readers. Potter fever soon swept the entire world, and Harry s story became known as a literary phenomenon. Since publication of the first novel, and its subsequent popularity among young readers, there have been some who have contested the books, ostracizing them because they believe the books promote the occult and make witchcraft desirable. Lord Voldemort, the most powerful and evil dark wizard for one hundred years, is often used as an example of why people believe that the books entice readers into the world of Satanism and the occult. They also believe that because Harry sometimes has to lie, cheat, and break school rules, he is not the kind of hero that children should be reading about (citation?). In The Wisdom of Harry Potter, it is stated that truth telling, submission to authority, and following the rules are not always the moral thing to do in regard to tensions between rules and ... • 48. A Reflection On My Values Speech By reflecting upon my Values Speech, I will be more aware of what skills I have already accomplished and what skills I need to improve on in order to prepare myself better for the next big speech as well as to further improve my public speaking skills. Now that I look back at the recording of my presentation, I clearly saw strengths that were shown, but there were also weaknesses that I revealed, diminishing the overall powerful effect that my speechshould have gave. As I watched Amy Cuddy s TED talk called Your body language shapes who you are , I learned more about body language and what I should ve done when I presented my Values Speech. Throughout my reflection, I will discuss my strengths that I portrayed during my speech such as pacing and eye contact as well as the limitations, for instance, stuttering and abruptly finishing my sentences, and then I will finish off my reflection with the levels of confidence and body language I portrayed. First off, there were many strengths that I believed were demonstrated within my Values Speech such as pacing and eye contact with my fellow classmates, but despite the strengths that were seen, the weaknesses of stuttering and finishing sentences abruptly created a weak feeling at the end of my presentation. As I watched the recording of my presentation on repeat, I noticed that my pacing was very well executed. I didn t speak too fast nor did I speak too slow, which is good because my classmates were able to follow along with what I was saying. Not only that, but I also provided eye contact to my classmates, showing that I was well prepared and did not need to read my note cards as much. Of course, with strengths, there were also weaknesses portrayed. I often stuttered at a couple of phrases because of my anxiety and I would also finish some of my sentences abruptly, leaving a poor execution. I realized that once I began saying a certain sentence and mess up mid way through, I would end the sentence with words that wouldn t be as clear. Now knowing my weaknesses and strengths, I will better prepare myself for my next upcoming speech by practicing my speeches with more word choices when I say it verbally, allowing myself to become more aware of the variety of ... • 49. Gender Roles In My Antonia My ГЃntonia takes place in a time in which gender roles were more enforced and more commonplace than they are today. Women were expected to take care of the children and the home, while men were expected to earn money and work the fields. Even though these roles were such a prominent aspect of the era, many characters worked against them. Willa Catherportrays these characters in a positive light because of their deviations from genderroles rather than despite them. ГЃntonia differs from what the perfect woman was thought to be in multiple ways. She works in the fields just much as she works in the house, but she never expresses disdain for this fact. Rather, she enjoys it, stating Oh, better that I work out of doors than in a house...I ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 51. Patrick Stewart Macbeth Director Rupert Goold created a very unconventional version of Macbeth. He gives the setting a Soviet Union feel a makes Macbeth s character almost like Joseph Stalin in brutality and ruthlessness. The majority of the production takes place in these underground bunkers making you feel like they are in World War II. Goold put so much thought into this rendition of the Shakespearean play so you can assume he out as much though as who he casted as the main roles and how they should portray them. Some things about his character I liked, however, I did have many complaints. Goold chose Patrick Stewart as Macbeth,Kate Fleetwood as Lady Macbeth, and Sophie Hunter, Polly Frame, and Niamh McGrady as the three witches. Patrick Stewart is a great actor, but I did find it hard to get past his age. He was way too old for the part and was subpar compared to other movies I have seen him in. He plays Macbeth as a deranged psychopath were as I see Macbeth more as an arrogant man who became drunk on power. He has obviously gone mad by the end of the play, but Stewart s adaptation is disturbed. Stewart nevertheless brought a fantastic element of suspense to the film. He is the best angry sandwich maker I have ever seen. The scenes did drag on though. So much focus was on Macbeth creating suspense that it became dry. Lady Macbeth, played by Kate Fleetwood did an... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I would have like the scene a bit more if the bodies would rise and say the prophecies themselves. It was very disappointing when the witches just said them. It is one of many disappointments regarding the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 52. Video Games And The Video Game Industry According to several studies, women are now making up a significant portion of the gaming demographic, but the industry hasn t done much to make them feel welcome. During the last decade, the mainstream video game industry has seemed to operate under the same apparent assumptions: girls don t play big action games, boys like the sexualization of girls in video games and won t play as a female character unless she is heavily sexualized, and that girls play video games for the attention of boys. These assumptions are what allows the gaming industry to continue to focus on their male players, particularly young men, despite the fact that the number of women playing games today may someday soon rival the number of men. For many years, the video game industry catered to the tastes of young men with their overly sexualized, one dimensional female characters, and their beefy male protagonists (to identify with or aspire to). Of course there are exceptions, as there are with anything. There have been many fully realized, non sexualized, and interesting female characters, notably more modern characters such as Chloe Price in Dontnod s second game, Life is Strange, Amita in Far Cry 4, and Square Enix s more recent portrayals of Lara Croft in Tomb Raider (2013), and Rise of the Tomb Raider, but despite the occasional good example, there are many poor examples to go along; Polygon cites Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes as [one of] the worst depictions of women in gaming {in 2014} in ... • 53. Global Climate Change Triggered By Global Warming The article, Global Climate Change Triggered by Global Warming by Stuart D. Jordan, seeks to provide evidence that global climate change caused by global warming is currently in affect and requires immediate attention and action. Jordan claims that the Earth s climate has been undergoing significant and alarming changes for the past thirty years. He provided evidence based on observations, theoretical models, and calculations made by other researchers. The article addressed the increase in temperature over the years and claimed 2005 to be the warmest year in the last century. There is much fear, as temperature continues to increase, that possible ice reduction and melted ice sheets and glaciers in the Artic, Antarctica, and Greenland may occur and cause a rise in sea levels. If the Antarctic ice sheet melts, the sea level is calculated to rise two hundred feet, while if the ice sheet in Greenland melts, the sea level is calculated to rise seven meters, approximately twenty feet. The rise in sea level is affecting coastal areas. Many coastal areas are expected to sooner or later be flooded or below sea level. This can have terrible consequences for high populated coastal areas. Another problem that global warming may have on the world s oceans is the possible change in the global oceanic conveyor belt . The conveyor belt controls the ocean s currents which has impact on regional climate change. However, scientists have yet to agree on whether or not reduction of flow has ... Then, we have internal users of accounting information, such as employees and the various types of managers (i.e., purchasing managers and marketing managers). Accurate accounting is extremely crucial to these individuals who make important financial and business decisions within an organization that directly affect the business itself (Wild, Larson amp; Chiapetta, 2007, p. 6). A company, aims to sell goods and services to customers at prices that will provide an adequate return to its owners (Kanter amp; Pressley, n.d., Slide 1 13). A business must maintain an adequate level of profitability and liquidity to continue operating (Kanter amp; Pressley, n.d., Slide 1 14). However, without accounting information, this is not possible. A firm s management needs this information to properly conduct daily activities within the business, such as finance the company, invest its resources, produce its goods and/or services, market those goods and/or services, and manage the employees (Kanter amp; Pressley, n.d., Slide 1 29). • 56. Revolutions In The 1820s The revolutions of the 1820s and the 1830s were based on the power struggle between liberals and conservative and motivated by liberalism and nationalism. In France, the Battle at the Rue de Rohan on July 29, 1830, occurred due to the results of the election of July 25, 1830, which created a more liberal Chamber of Deputies. This enraged King Charles X, an ultraroyalist, who wanted absolute monarchic rule. Charles X implemented the Four Ordinances which, restricted freedom of the press, dissolved the recently elected Chamber of Deputies, and called for new elections under a franchise restricted to the wealthiest people in the country. Deliberately making it so that the monarchy would have absolute control. The working class, infuriated with the Four Ordinances, took the streets of Parisand built barricades; whilst, Charles X called the troops. On August 2 Charles X abdicated the throne and was exiled in England and Louis Philippe was named King of the French, marking a shift in power from one of absolute monarchical control to a more liberal government, labeled the July Monarchy. Whereas, in the German speaking lands the Hambach Festival took place on May 27, 1832. Students marched to the Hambach castle, influenced by the French Revolution two years prior. Radical and democratic leaders led a protest that was attended by 30,000 people, they called for a republican government, rule of law, and freedom of expression. The German monarchs did not comply and did exactly the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
