Essay On Modern English
Anglo Saxon period, from 5th century to 1066, became the ancestor of our modern literature. There is
a big difference from then and now including our language and culture.
First is the difference between their language and the language now which is modern English. Anglo
Saxon language is the oldest known form of English language and is also called as Old English. Even
though it is referred as old English, their language is far different from modern English and is closer to
modern German. The distinction can be seen, for example, on the old English word haftling, to the
modern English word prisoner. The similarities to modern German can be seen from the old English
haftling, not changing and still being haftling now. Their rich language was used on their great works
such as the four manuscripts and, of course, the majestic Beowullf. Old English influenced modern
English in some little ways. Old English, as the ancestor, evolved and modified making it less
noticeable now but it is actually used in our everyday lives.
In terms of values, their point of view can be a bad view for us. Beowulf provided us information
about the expected values before. A person can be heroic if he shows bravery. A brave man that can ...

They have their rights equally distributed after marriage. A woman stays at home, give birth, do
houseworks or field works, or sometimes supervise the houseworks. But looking back, men actually
look higher than women. Men also do fieldworks, fight enemies and lead a group. Now, rights of
women are being fought upon every place in the world. Feminists say that there should be equal rights
for men and women because everything a man can do, can also be done by a woman. Before, the
women were more of a houseperson but now, we can see that a lot of women became anything a man
can be. There are many women who work on a job that was just for men before. Soon enough, there
will be a war on feminists and

Fusako is interested in western goods and modifies her house according to the western attitudes.
Fusako s house is displayed to be a modern household as there wasn t a single Japanese room in
Fusako s house; her mode of living was thoroughly western (Mishima 113). As a result, Fusako

Child Beauty Pageants Argumentative Essay
One of the biggest issues related to beauty pageants is engaging children, especially young girls,
taking part in these activities. America has about three million young girls between the ages of 6
months and 16 years taking part in beauty contests. Many people argue whether or not children should
be participating in these pageants. The participants and their parents are obviously all for these
children beauty pageants. However, there are many people against the idea. The people that believe
that it is okay for young girls to be a part of children s beauty pageants see them as the young girls
showing off their beauty. However, are they really showing off their beauty by walking down a
runway with big, sparkly dresses and caked on makeup? ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In her journal, Protecting Pageant Princesses: A Call for Statutory Regulation of Child Beauty
Pageants, Lindsey Lieberman recalls Brooke Breedwell, a childhood pageant contestant. As a girl, she
suffered from stress and anxiety while striving for an unrealistic standard of perfection. As a child, not
later in life, she suffered from stress and anxiety because of beauty pageants. Lieberman also speaks
about the later effects on Breedwell s life, saying, Her mother s ambition, coupled with her own
obsessive drive to win, resulted in severe social and psychological consequences. It s not just the
pageants or the other contestants that contribute to the stress, it s also the parents. The parents have a
tendency to get more competitive than their kids in these contests. They push their children to their
limits and to prove what exactly? Is this simply an opportunity for the parents to relive their own
youth through their child; or maybe a means to feel like winners themselves through the hard work
and devotion they have put in? Lieberman states that as a result, little girls who participate are prone
to persistent lifetime challenges, including body shame, perfectionism, depression and eating
disorders. Many people, after their life in pageants, suffer from low self esteem, anxiety, depression,
and eating disorders. Despite all

How Water Made A Mitten
How Water Made a Mitten When looking at a map of the United States, finding the state of Michigan
is not a difficult task. Michigan is a unique state in which it has a distinct and familiar shape, therefore
commonly referred to as the mitten state. In addition the Lower Peninsula that is shaped like a mitten,
the great state is composed of an addition peninsula. These two peninsulas are surround by 5 great
lakes , which contains 18% of the world s fresh water supply. The diverse shape and topography of
Michigan can be attributed to the processes of weathering, erosion, and deposition throughout the
area. The beautiful landscape we enjoy today began to take shape over tens of thousands of years ago
under a sheet of ice.

These drainage basins that formed 6,000 years ago are the origin of the Great Lakes we are familiar
with today. These glacial lakes are thought to much larger than the current bodies of water surrounding
Michigan. The evidence of these lakes can be found, for example, around Saginaw bay where there
are eroded bluffs and plains located far away from the current Lake. Glaciers also left us many
moraines in the state of Michigan. Moraines are land masses where debris, carried by glaciers has
formed ridges or mounds. Moraines can be an indicator of the end of a large glacial retreat. Moraines
are created by the wasting ice sheet and are composed of glacial till. Glacial till (unsorted glacial
sediment) is laid down quickly as the glacier moves and is composed of various sediments with many
rocks and stones. In Michigan there are many famous moraines. As the lucky residents of Marquette
we can look out our windows and see evidence of glaciers because of all of our rolling hills. Rolling
landforms are a typifying aspect of a moraine.
The great lakes have certainly influenced Michigan s unique shape and distinctive mitten shape,
however those lakes aren t the only sources of water that contribute. There are over 36,000 miles of
rivers and streams throughout the state of Michigan that have also helped shape the land we enjoy
today. Rivers help shape landscapes through erosion and the transportation and deposition of

Longoria Character Analysis
I think Longoria s character shows a lot of discipline for doing what is enforced to do. We see how
violence has affected his life and other people s perspective of him. He started out in the Army at a
very young age and carried out the harsh tasks that he was given, no matter how cruel they were.
Longoria is a strong minded person. For him to carry out some of the assignments he was given, it
takes a different kind of person. For example, the incident with the people in the village. He murdered
a whole village of innocent people. To me, this shows that Longoria is ruthless. In a sense, I would
almost say that he has lost his mind. After years of killing like he did, how does he not have Post
Traumatic Stress Disorder? Most people that must go through and witness the things like Longoria are
scarred for the rest of their life. For example, my grandfather was in the military during Vietnam. He
would wake up screaming in the middle of the night, fireworks and loud noises bothered him, among
other little things that would trigger his PTSD. Violence eventually takes its toll and I think it got the
best of Longoria. The first altercation between Antonio and Longoria happens about half way through
the book. Antonio travels to the park where Longoria usually plays chess and sets out to kill him. He
arrives and asks for Longoria but he hasn t arrived yet. After waiting, Longoria finally arrives.
Antonio, so full of hate and vengeance, attacks Longoria with a pipe. Longoria was

The Brief Wondrous Life Of Oscar Wao Summary
Díaz s Negative Portrayal of Sexuality in The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao The Brief Wondrous
Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Díaz is a story about an overweight nerd from a New Jersey ghetto who is
an aspiring writer and who dreams of finding love. Oscar s journey to find love is plagued by the fukú,
a Dominican curse believed to be placed on his family for generations. In the Dominican society, the
typical Dominican male is characterized as being sexually active, powerful and charming, and a
woman s value is largely based on her sexuality and appeal to men. The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar
Wao has two main female characters, Beli and Lola, whose youths are seized by their involvement in
sexual activity with the opposite sex, and whose ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

these women, and that he only sees them as his conquests. Women, to him, are a notch in his belt, a
sign that he is as masculine and he is expected to be. The ideas that women are sexual objects and a
man must conquer as many as possible to be masculine is an ideology sustained in the Dominican
Republic and ingrained in the minds of its people. Even when faced with the woman he could truly

women, One day she called, asked me where I d been the night before, and when I didn t have a good

let go of his habits. This book is misogynistic because of the lack of respect for women expressed
through characters like Yunior, and the ideas expressed through him that one s sexuality is dependent

Neuman Systems Model
Neuman systems model. The NSM identifies that any system has boundaries meant to protect a single
client, family, or social issue within the system (Neuman Fawcett, 2011). The model is dynamic with a
continuum of variables that influence the stability of the system. The influence, such as stressors, can
alter the system or restore the system. A principle of the NSM is optimal wellness represented as the
greatest degree of system stability (Neuman Fawcett, 2011). The NSM theory asserts nursing to care
for a complex systsem, requiring an approach to assimilate and adapt into the system. The NSM
utilizes the internal and external cues of the environment to influence the system. The nature of the
system determines the complexity of the system. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
NSM depicts stress and reaction to the stability of stress on the system. A patient and/or family
reaction to the transition from oncology care to hypervigilance in primary care can experience stress,
most often as psychological distress. The repeated cyclical nature of the response to the stresses of
changed home life, family functioning, body image, handling daily activities, or connecting with a
support group changes the client. The ideal of NSM is to attain optimal stability and reach a new
developmental level (Neuman Fawcett, 2011). NSM fits the need of the PICO project through the
interpretation of concepts and the dynamic nature of stressors and reactions to the basic structure
(patient and/or family). A key component in utilization of the NSM for screening psychological
distress after oncology care, is self report of the instability of transition to a new lifestyle. Cancer
related psychological distress is widespread (Hoffman, 2012). The distress can remain hidden as
priorities in cancer rehabilitation and family adjustment take place. The initial stressor of the cancer
diagnosis creates a change in the patient and/or family (basic structure functioning and energy
resources), however after cancer treatment (variables), the client system (patient and/or family) still is
adjusting to change (lines of resistance). Patients and families may not go back to their prior life
(environment) but transition into a new

The Roles Of Gladiators In The Movie Pompeii
The movie Pompeii portrays two slaves fighting as gladiators in ancient Rome and the eruption of a
nearby volcano. Gladiators were people who were armed with a weapon to in a public area against
another person or a wild animal, for the entertainment of the audience (dictionary.com). There,
gladiator fights occurred often in arenas. One of the most famous was the Colosseum. Half of the
time, gladiators were actually slaves (Wood). Though they seldom died, other spinoffs of their battles
would transpire. For instance, sea battles and fights fought with wild animals would take their place
(Wood). These types generally resulted in more than one death. Ancient Romans enjoyed watching
them clash their swords together and, if they paid extra, battle until death (Bancroft Hunt). People who
needed to pay off debts, were ex soldiers, prisoners of wars, volunteers (in place of military service),
or slaves became gladiators (Wood). One derivative of the fights were them being showcased in water
sea battles. Frequently, they ended up with more than one ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Ironically, they were former soldiers, volunteers, prisoners of wars, people who needed to pay off

as well (Wood). Although they were well fed, paid for each fight, able to keep the gifts and rewards
they received, had medical treatment, and commonly they only needed to engage in fights three to five
times per year, schools were rough nonetheless. Novicius , new gladiators, were bound with restraints.
Training occurred every day, but the gladiator s actual viewed fight had few designated times
throughout the year (Alchin). Even though gladiators used to be at the bottom of the social status
triangle, Roman citizens would spend a great deal of money on

Analysis Of Van Eyck s Arnolfini Wedding
Comparison Visual Analysis In the previous writings I wrote about Hendrick van der Burch, An
Officer and a Standing Woman . I wrote on how well he composed the figures, the use of color and
light throughout the image, and the amount of symbolism. I ended the paper saying I will compare this
painting to another, and I chose Van Eyck s Arnolfini Wedding. The contrast and the similarities are
great between the two the artist. First of all they re both oil painters and from Northern Europe,
specifically Netherlands. Although they re from the same location, the both lived in two different time
eras being 200 years apart from another. Starting with the composition of the figures of Hendrick s
painting we see three human figures and an animal. The male figure is sitting down on a chair
slouched drinking white wine, while wearing his officer uniform. The other two female figures appear
to look like servants; one standing next to the officer, and the other in the background in another room
sewing clothes. To compare this to Van Eyck s painting this is similar. In the foreground they both
have a man and woman together, both being the main focus of the painting. The use of space in both
of the images are quite beautiful. In one image we have three figures and an animal, and in the other
one it two figures and an animal. Hendrick added another room to his image showing that it s a big
room, while Van Eyck did something that was pure marvelous. He added a small mirror to the back

Essay On Honesty
Honesty is the best policy. We have always been taught this and also that to lie is a bad thing to do.
There is a certain beauty in living life with honesty. While the benefits of and motivations for
choosing honesty in life are many including that truthfulness and honesty are integral to one s sense of
moral integrity living a life of honesty ultimately means having little to regret. Living with honesty is
less about persistently resorting to truth over deception, and is more about living your life in a way
that is honest to who you are on the inside your strengths, your gifts, and your passions, as well as
your beliefs and morals. Being true to ourselves should undoubtedly help lead us to what most of us

In many situations it is a good idea to keep quiet or, better still, be diplomatic and tactfully handle
sensitive issues. The line dividing honesty and diplomacy is a thin one. We have to be careful in
deciding when to be honest and when to be at our diplomatic best. We also have to decide whether we
should be absolutely candid, or use the truth as a matter of convenience.
Wars are won by words not weapons. For centuries people have tried to solve their problems by
negotiation. To escape conflicts and wars they have used words to persuade their opponents. That is
where diplomacy begins. Diplomacy is an intellectual activity and decision making derived from
ongoing analysis of current situations. Diplomacy includes the combination of ways and abilities
which any state can use for its worthy existence in the world and for establishing cooperation with
other members of international community.
In modern day and age, one has to practice diplomacy as it is essential to get one s way in a world that
is highly competitive. What you say matters a lot. One has to be careful while conveying issues as
they would have an impact on one s surroundings. Building up of personal relationships depends upon
your choice of words, how you convey them to the concerned

Essay on William Faulkner’s As I Lay Dying
Through the use of many characters monologues the narrative point of view presents an objective
view of what really happened.
This statement is not adequate in connection with William Faulkner s novel, As I Lay Dying. Though
many points of view are expressed through the use of interior monologue, even when compiled, they
cannot serve as an objective view of what really happened.
There are many monologues by many different people, often with opposing ideas and beliefs.
Together the novel is a collection of half truths, with each set of events shaped by what the current
narrator believes is truth. To each individual what they say and think, they consider reality, however it
is merely their perception of reality and consequently it is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
But then I realised I had been tricked by words, older than Anse or love, and that the same word had
tricked Anse too. This quote taken from Addie s monologue reveals the untrustworthiness of language
and words. Originally she believed that the word love meant something but when she became
pregnant with Darl she learned that love didn t mean what the word meant and could in fact be very
deceiving. I knew that that word [love] was like the others: just a shape to fill a lack. To Addie words
lacks the power say what they mean and to give any other human being the experience. Words like
love, pride, fear and motherhood, she believes were all made by people who had not experienced those
things before. The space and emotions and ideas which language cannot fill leaves room for different
interpretations, thus through languages lack, an objective view is unachievable.
Throughout the novel, each character has not only brought their own viewpoints, they have also
brought their own past experiences, accounts of the present and dreams of the future. In their interior
monologues, more so when they slip into stream of consciousness, they meld the past, present and
future and consequently view the occurrences through the coloured glass of their mind. Everything
they say, think and do is corrupted by their underlying belief system and previous experiences, making
it unfathomable that an objective account of events could be drawn from this compilation of

An Argument In Shakespeare s Work
Therefore, Edward De Vere is a strong contender s an alternative writer to Shakespearean work.
Although Earl De Vere is the most likely candidate to have authored Shakespeare s work, there are
other alternative possibilities such as Francis Bacon and a group of individual writers. Francis Bacon
was a famous philosopher of this time period, who kept company and traveled with other well
educated aristocrats. (bbcamerica.com) Bacon s travels as well as his social rank make him a notable
contender as an alternate writer of Shakespearean plays. As a leading figure of the English

These believers cite important counter arguments supporting William Shakespeare as the true author.
For instance, No Elizabethan documents support the claim that Shakespeare s plays and poems were
written by someone else, or that the actor Shakespeare was not the author Shakespeare. (shakespeare

from the Elizabethan period when Shakespeare was alive rather it was a theory started well after
Shakespeare s passing. A more specific counter argument concentrates on the number one alternate to
William Shakespeare Edward De Vere 17th Earl of Oxford. In examining, the historical data, the dates
do not support the theory that the Earl of Oxford wrote all of Shakespeare s work. Oxford died in
1604, and significant evidence indicates that some of Shakespeare s work was produced years later.
(For instance, The Tempest was influenced by a voyage to the Americas that did not occur until 1610).

To summarize the findings of writers, The Heskett and Colleagues framework (Appendix 1) shows
how staffs productivity affects consumer opinions and loyalty and how internal management factors
affect staff opinions and loyalty. This framework also helps organisation to a better view of how

Authors suggest that staff impressions of the job have a greater impact than staff achievements on

two dimensions (Bitner et al. 1990, Bettencourt and Brown 2003). Consumer opinions and control

indirect effects is that although the direct effects of staff achievements are not very important to

Ophelia s madness in the play consists of a mad language, violent reactions and distraught behaviour.

Besides the curiosity and easy accessibility, another reason the number of drug users across the United
States would increase would be because marijuana is a gateway for other drugs. Since the legalization
of marijuana would make smoking weed out in public and smoking in general a social norm, many
users of marijuana could possibly fall under the curiosity of what other drugs can do and how they
could make them feel while on them. The high that marijuana causes is what drives many people to
start using. Although other drugs provide different types of high, the high people experience from
marijuana may not be enough anymore if it were legalized throughout the states. Since smoking weed
would be a social norm if it were legalized, there is a high chance that many users of the drug may

How To Write An Essay About The Battle Of Chattanooga

HIST 2010
November 25th, 2015
The Battle of Chattanooga, that ensued November 23rd through the 25th, 1863, was a Civil War battle
that followed the The Battle of Chickamauga. Since the Union had lost the Battle of Chickamauga,
they retreated to Chattanooga. However, the Confederate army followed in an effort to starve the
Union soldiers and take over the land ( Battle of Chattanooga 1.) The Battle of Chattanooga ultimately
forced the confederates back into Georgia and paved the way for William T. Sherman s Atlanta

In September of 1863, the Union army, led by General William Rosecrans, took a loss to the

10 years. Charleston, Myrtle Beach and Hilton head have added over 150,000 new residents in since
2010 collectively, with over half being in Charleston. South Carolina represents one of our primary
markets and an established base of operations for our company.
In the Atlanta market, growth is expected to be even more advantageous with over 400,000 healthcare

Persuasive Essay On Cedar Lake Dnr
Cedar Lake has been known for years to be a swamp of pestilence that many are afraid to touch, and
for good reason. The Factories that surround the lake used to dispose of their waste directly into the
water. Most of the chemicals are no longer in the water system, and the water quality is now good
enough to harvest fish from the lake. The problems faced now are sedimentation that has made the
lake shallow, and people s perception of the lake. The Iowa DNR working alongside the Friends of
Cedar Lake have a plan to deal with those issues, and make the lake a healthy center of outdoor
recreation for the city. Restoring, and improving the lake will give the people what they need.
People want to enjoy the outdoors, but many don t have the time or money to travel to rural recreation
areas. In The Hamburg Case Study, results showed that people felt recreation areas within the city

The first thing these people should see is a run down industrial area with some water by it that doesn t
look like much. In an article by Tim Smedley he discusses how being by a body of water has a great
impact on mental health, even more so than places like woodlands or gardens. This means that the
people who live here, and see that body of water every day will show improved mental health even
without using the lake directly. Then when people drive through the city, they will not only see a
beautiful lake that makes them think highly of the city, but they will also have improved mental

European Refugee Crisis Essay
The European refugee crisis began in 2015, when a rising number of refugees and migrants made the
journey to the European Union (EU) to seek asylum. Refugees are people who have been forced to
leave their country in order to escape war, persecution, or natural disaster. According to the data that
was shown in Business Standard and also confirmed by BBC News, the top ten nations which account
for 90% of the sea arrivals in 2015 were: Syria (49%), Afghanistan (21%), Iraq (8%), Eritrea (4%),
Pakistan, Nigeria and Somalia (2 %), Sudan, Gambia and Mali (1%). Also the United Nations High
Commissioner for Refugees confirms that the top three nationalities of refugees are Syrian, Afghan
and Iraqi. Of the refugees and migrants arriving in Europe by sea in 2015, 58% were men, 17%
women and 25% children. (Wright, 2015). According to Eurostat, EU member states received over 1.2
million first time asylum applications in 2015, 4 countries (Germany, Hungary, Sweden, and Austria)
received around two thirds, while Latvia received a very small part of them.
Latvia did not have any experience receiving or integrating refugees from other parts of the world
before refugee s crisis in Europe. At this moment, in Latvia the number of refugees is 776.
Unfortunately, the society s attitude towards refugees is negative in Latvia, if Latvia could they would
not take any more refugees, however, because Latvia is in EU Latvia has received an quota 1,29% of
refugees and Latvia needs to give them

Notes On Death Valley
Ashleigh Hartsock Death Valley Patterned ground in Death Valley Salt can be thought of as the warm
form of ice. In some extreme cases, geologists that go to Death Valley substitute salt into their
lemonade as a refreshing treat. Gabriel Chevalier Patterned ground, which refers to a ground whose
surface has developed orderly patterns, such as polygons, circles, steplike forms (terracettes), and
stripes (Hunt, Charles B., Robinson, Bowles, Washburn; B104), is characteristic of and reaches a great
level of development in areas of intense frost action, such as high latitude and alpine regions
(Washburn, 1956). However, while patterned ground is particularly developed in areas of intense frost

al.; 1966). In fact, Hunt (1975) states that since the ground patterns of the two regions are similar, salt
can be thought of as the warm form of ice. In the saltpan of Death Valley and the surrounding
floodplain similarities of patterned ground between these two types of regions can be seen, and will be
further described in this paper. Patterned Ground of Death Valley: The patterned ground
morphologies, characteristic of playa environments, which formed as a result of the expansion and
contraction of saline rich sediments, are similar to such crack morphologies seen in periglacial
environments, as a result of freeze thaw cycles. In periglacial environments the extent of development
of patterned grounds is proportional to the intensity of frost action, while in playa environments; the
extent of patterned ground is proportional to salt content (Hunt, et. al.; 1966). The prominent patterned
ground morphology among colder climates is ice wedge polygons that develop on the permanently
frozen ground. Similarly to the permanently frozen grounds of periglacial environments, a salt
hardened ground in a playa environment can develop extensive polygonal crack morphologies (Hunt,
et. al.; 1966). In desert regions, such as Death Valley, desiccation cracks that lead to the formation of
polygonal systems are the most prominent crack morphologies. The general rapid drying of fine
grained sediments within the Death Valley Basin leads to

Drug Trafficking In Mexico
Drug trafficking, as an actual problemátic around the world, has been a problem since long time ago,
and Mexico has come into notice around the world for this matter. Since approximately the 19th
century, the world has been worried because of illegal drug trafficking, but in the beginning, drugs
were not illegal and widely used throughout the world as they are today. Laws that banned the
commercialization use of drugs were approved less than 80 years ago in the mayor part of the world´s
countries, In the early 1900 s, drugs were not considered a serious issue, because the government
believed the abuse would not stop if citizens could not get drugs after they were banned, but it would
grow. Among the years, México has been gaining a bad image related with drug trafficking and ...

In 2006, last Mexican President Felipe Calderon proposed an initiative, in partnership with the United
States, wanting to combat the cartels with military force, which significantly escalated violence and
claimed thousands of lives, including civilians. Mexico s drug war has turned violent in recent years,
resulting in tens of thousands of deaths. Law enforcement attempts to put cartels out of business by
arresting key figures have led not to the demise of the drug trade, but to bloody deaths of both guilty
and innocent people, so we come to question the usefulness of this measurements. The drug trade will
mightily continue, no matter how risky or violent the the commercialization of it gets. In Afghanistan,
illicit opium (a substance derived by collecting and drying the milky juice that comes from the seed
pods of the poppy plant) production is so huge that a non corrupt central government is nearly
impossible to achieve. It is noticeable that the bigger it gets, the more difficult it is to

Mom, I m scared, trembled Juliana.
Of what? Mom retorted.
Of what? Of dying! the eldest sister shrieked. My other sister and I glanced at each other, too scared to
complain at that point. We were sitting at a wobbly picnic table, the surface of it almost as smooth as
marble because of the years of use, stuck in a room full of people bouncing their leg up and down with
sweat dribbling down their forehead while trying to sign the liability paper stating that death could
occur.
After you have signed the liability document, return it to the desk and head to the life jacket shack, a

We finally made it to the rickety rocky shore where we were supposed to put the boats in and float to
our inevitable death. My mom, sisters and I got assigned to a boat with another woman and her two
daughters.
Hi ladies, everyone here calls me McFly and man am I lucky to be on this boat today, our instructor
gawked at my mom and sisters, under the assumption that he was being flattering. He s already
annoying, bye bye McFly, I thought to myself.
Alright, purty ladies. First, let s start off with how to row, and what to do if you fall outta the boat,
McFly snickered. With those random tidbits of knowledge, we were off. Our boat led the others, since
McFly was the main instructor, which made me feel safe until he mentioned how he loved working at
ACE Adventure camp because he got to drink and party all weekend with his counselor buddies. After
that, my stomach flipped at just the mere sight of white water.
Whoosh! The water grumbled as it got swallowed by its own current wrapping around the rocks. Here
we go! McFly yelled over the powerful current. Everyone began to row their hearts out, putting so
much focus into making a rhythm like a beautiful orchestra. I drilled into my brain, rowing is vital,
vital to staying afloat, vital to staying alive. Our boat swiftly guided itself as the current carried it
through the rapids. First drop down, one to go.
Before the biggest wave, we drifted through the calm part of the river where Mcfly gave us a

Essay What are the factors behind the rise of megacities
What are the factors behind the rise of Mega Cities, and to what extent are these urban areas
sustainable?
Megacities, defined by population, have at least 10 million inhabitants. In recent years, megacities in
the developing world have grown rapidly with little or no planning. As a result, they face cries of
infrastructure, poverty and unemployment. The driving force for the rise of megacities is mass
urbanisation between rural urban areas, as well as rates of natural increase that are higher in urban
than rural areas. An example of a megacity is Mexico City, population estimates range between 16 30
million depending on where the boundaries are drawn. Either way, Mexico City is now considered the
world s 3rd largest city and still ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Many projects have been created to make sure that the mega cities remain sustainable. For example in
Dhaka, the Bangladesh Environmental Network works on reducing the high levels of arsenic in
Bangladesh s water supply and combats the countries severe flooding problem. Another example of
how megacities are environmentally sustainable is the Blue Skies Project in Jakarta, Indonesia. This
project is pushing towards a completely natural gas conversion and is working towards the installation
of dedicated filling stations, establishing a fleet of natural gas fuelled passenger busses, supplying
conversion kits for gasoline fuelled cars, and creating suitable inspection and maintenance facilities.
Economically, megacities thrive. Most of the time mega cities are also world cities, which mean they
are resource and learning centres. This strongly suggests that business and global trade is strong
between other countries (that they have high levels of synergy). Regarding how socially sustainable
megacities are, lots is being done to make sure that they are socially sustainable. For example, in
Jakarta there are traffic problems but they are being faced to rid the city of pollution and congestion.
The city has launched a three to one policy, demanding that every car on major thruways carry at least
three passengers when passing through special zones between 4:30pm to 7:30pm. The city has also
undertaken the construction of a nearly 17 mile

There is no differentiation among students who do or do not wear glasses and they either have little or
no income (associated with part time work). The research identified UTS undergraduate students value
products that are widely accessible, function properly (related to high quality) and allow them to
express their individuality. They look for low prices and brand familiarity and they prefer humour
advertising appeals.
The majority of target customers are brand switchers . Evidence of brand switchers was shown by the
majority of survey respondents who browse a variety of brands and styles when purchasing eyewear.
Additionally, price influences the eyewear choices more than any other factor. Although they prefer
familiar brands (which may appear as multi brand loyals activity), there was still a multitude of other
smaller eyewear retailers listed by target customers.
Further psychographic information on the target customer is described below:
 They want stylish frames to keep up with trends and won t become outdated quickly
 They wear sunglasses as a fashion accessory and not just for eye protection
 They are always looking to try smaller retailers which are perceived as new and modern
 They shop for eyewear online, but mainly from retailers with complementary physical stores

Drug Abuse Sociology
Using sociology imagination to understand why drug abuse might happen we have to understand the
movies of individuals. However, like all things in life we might not be able to justify one individual
motive with another s motives. Thus, we have to look at drug abuse as a bigger picture. What makes
people more accepting to drug abuse and why were they willing to do so. In many cases of drug abuse
that I have seen or experience the individual don t mean to abuse it starts out as a fun peer pressure
activity harmless fun as people like to say many do it only one time while others might be more
inclined to try it once more and might lead to an addiction of sorts. But to get to the main point of why
young individuals might seem to accept drug abuse

How Do Mothballs Or Ammonia Help In Spelling Squirrels
Do mothballs or ammonia help in repelling squirrels? Moth balls and ammonia are one of the most
common repellents that people use to get rid of nasty squirrels, but, unfortunately, they are not very
useful. There are several ways how to use these repellents and hope for the best results, although it
usually won t fix your problem with the rodents. Ammonia drives the squirrels mad because of their
developed sense of smell and can scared them away for some time. Also, it reminds them to the urine
of the predators and natural enemies. All you have to do is to wet some rags with ammonia and put
them in the area in which squirrels are living in. You have to do that in a proper manner and very
safely and at the same time effective. Make sure that

Currently, there has been growing importance of social cohesion all over the world. A cohesive society

Transition In Willy Russell s Educating Rita
Transitioning into the new world may allow the individual to face new experiences that may become
obstacles or barriers they must overcome before being able to transition. During this transition,
individuals may also gain a new sense of self and others. Willy Russell s play, Educating Rita explores
obstacles as Rita transitions from an uneducated class to the educated and how it impacts her life as a
woman as she is forced to be someone she does not want to be (the role of women). Another text that
explores transition is a story by Gill Hickson, Identity in the face of terror from TEDx Talk. The story
involves terrorism attack in a subway which included Gill Hickson who nearly died to a bomber but

Rita s transitioning does not initially go well for her as the middle working class she belongs to ties
her down and the fact that Rita does not have the knowledge to be able to overcome the differences of
her world and the intellectual world. During the initial stages of Rita s transitioning, obstacles stopped
her from moving forward to her goal. Near the end of Russell s play, Rita claims to have transitioned
successfully from the middle class to the educated class. Rita states to Professor Frank, I m not an

Democracy In America By Alexis De Tocqueville
The project that Alexis de Tocqueville undertook in writing Democracy in America was highly
ambitious, and became one of the most influential texts of the nineteenth century, and remains to this
day a classic in political science literature. Having witnessed the failure of France to democratize,
Tocqueville sought out to study a prosperous democracy. The United States of America during the
writing of this text exemplified stability and democratic governance, allowing Alexis de Tocqueville to
gain insight into making a democratic government succeed. His travels and studies in the United
States ultimately led him to conclude that the transition toward a democratic government and equality
of conditions had developed strongest in America, though he suggests that it is indeed a universal
phenomenon and a perpetual historical tendency that could not be stopped. This conclusion that
democratic development is inevitable encouraged him to examine the process in an attempt to
understand the strengths, as well as the dangers, associated with democratic governance. ... Show

Paradise Lost And Antigone Comparison
To educate a man in mind and not in morals is to educate a menace to society. (Roosevelt). Since the
beginning of time societies have existed, thriving among mankind. Societies dictate norms and
regulations for the people living within them by establishing a status quo. Since the status quo exists, a
large majority of people alter their actions and words they do and say to fit the societal norm, the
status quo in order to seem normal . As common as a status quo is to societies, so is the reality of a
rebel: someone who goes against the status quo, such as Antigone. Societies also have people who
overly conform, in turn suffering negative consequences, such as Eve. If a comparison of both works
(Antigone and Paradise Lost) are taken, it will remain obvious that Antigone materializes as a
stronger, more self independent character who is against the societal norms, whereas Eve lacks enough
inner strength and willpower to avoid conforming to the origin of the negativity of social norms. In
general, society is not an evil device to have a part in, rather, it is completely normal. If an individual
lives in a community, neighborhood, city, town, village, etc., they belong in a society. Societies
provide chaos management ; they keep people supposedly in line and provide rules. Rules are not
wicked, but sometimes certain rules may go against the morals of a person, making the rules a
negative aspect of society. This transforms the relationship of an individual existing in

  • 2. Essay On Modern English Anglo Saxon period, from 5th century to 1066, became the ancestor of our modern literature. There is a big difference from then and now including our language and culture. First is the difference between their language and the language now which is modern English. Anglo Saxon language is the oldest known form of English language and is also called as Old English. Even though it is referred as old English, their language is far different from modern English and is closer to modern German. The distinction can be seen, for example, on the old English word haftling, to the modern English word prisoner. The similarities to modern German can be seen from the old English haftling, not changing and still being haftling now. Their rich language was used on their great works such as the four manuscripts and, of course, the majestic Beowullf. Old English influenced modern English in some little ways. Old English, as the ancestor, evolved and modified making it less noticeable now but it is actually used in our everyday lives. In terms of values, their point of view can be a bad view for us. Beowulf provided us information about the expected values before. A person can be heroic if he shows bravery. A brave man that can ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Feminists say that there should be equal rights for men and women because everything a man can do, can also be done by a woman. • 4. Child Beauty Pageants Argumentative Essay One of the biggest issues related to beauty pageants is engaging children, especially young girls, taking part in these activities. America has about three million young girls between the ages of 6 months and 16 years taking part in beauty contests. Many people argue whether or not children should be participating in these pageants. The participants and their parents are obviously all for these children beauty pageants. However, there are many people against the idea. The people that believe that it is okay for young girls to be a part of children s beauty pageants see them as the young girls showing off their beauty. However, are they really showing off their beauty by walking down a runway with big, sparkly dresses and caked on makeup? ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In her journal, Protecting Pageant Princesses: A Call for Statutory Regulation of Child Beauty Pageants, Lindsey Lieberman recalls Brooke Breedwell, a childhood pageant contestant. As a girl, she suffered from stress and anxiety while striving for an unrealistic standard of perfection. As a child, not later in life, she suffered from stress and anxiety because of beauty pageants. Lieberman also speaks about the later effects on Breedwell s life, saying, Her mother s ambition, coupled with her own obsessive drive to win, resulted in severe social and psychological consequences. It s not just the pageants or the other contestants that contribute to the stress, it s also the parents. The parents have a tendency to get more competitive than their kids in these contests. They push their children to their limits and to prove what exactly? Is this simply an opportunity for the parents to relive their own youth through their child; or maybe a means to feel like winners themselves through the hard work and devotion they have put in? Lieberman states that as a result, little girls who participate are prone to persistent lifetime challenges, including body shame, perfectionism, depression and eating disorders. Many people, after their life in pageants, suffer from low self esteem, anxiety, depression, and eating disorders. Despite all ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In addition the Lower Peninsula that is shaped like a mitten, the great state is composed of an addition peninsula. These drainage basins that formed 6,000 years ago are the origin of the Great Lakes we are familiar with today. These glacial lakes are thought to much larger than the current bodies of water surrounding Michigan. The evidence of these lakes can be found, for example, around Saginaw bay where there are eroded bluffs and plains located far away from the current Lake. Glaciers also left us many moraines in the state of Michigan. Moraines are land masses where debris, carried by glaciers has formed ridges or mounds. Moraines can be an indicator of the end of a large glacial retreat. Moraines are created by the wasting ice sheet and are composed of glacial till. Glacial till (unsorted glacial sediment) is laid down quickly as the glacier moves and is composed of various sediments with many rocks and stones. In Michigan there are many famous moraines. As the lucky residents of Marquette we can look out our windows and see evidence of glaciers because of all of our rolling hills. Rolling landforms are a typifying aspect of a moraine. The great lakes have certainly influenced Michigan s unique shape and distinctive mitten shape, however those lakes aren t the only sources of water that contribute. There are over 36,000 miles of rivers and streams throughout the state of Michigan that have also helped shape the land we enjoy today. • 6. Longoria Character Analysis I think Longoria s character shows a lot of discipline for doing what is enforced to do. We see how violence has affected his life and other people s perspective of him. He started out in the Army at a very young age and carried out the harsh tasks that he was given, no matter how cruel they were. Longoria is a strong minded person. For him to carry out some of the assignments he was given, it takes a different kind of person. For example, the incident with the people in the village. He murdered a whole village of innocent people. To me, this shows that Longoria is ruthless. In a sense, I would almost say that he has lost his mind. After years of killing like he did, how does he not have Post Traumatic Stress Disorder? Most people that must go through and witness the things like Longoria are scarred for the rest of their life. For example, my grandfather was in the military during Vietnam. He would wake up screaming in the middle of the night, fireworks and loud noises bothered him, among other little things that would trigger his PTSD. Violence eventually takes its toll and I think it got the best of Longoria. The first altercation between Antonio and Longoria happens about half way through the book. Antonio travels to the park where Longoria usually plays chess and sets out to kill him. He arrives and asks for Longoria but he hasn t arrived yet. After waiting, Longoria finally arrives. Oscar s journey to find love is plagued by the fukú, a Dominican curse believed to be placed on his family for generations. In the Dominican society, the typical Dominican male is characterized as being sexually active, powerful and charming, and a woman s value is largely based on her sexuality and appeal to men. The model is dynamic with a continuum of variables that influence the stability of the system. The influence, such as stressors, can alter the system or restore the system. A principle of the NSM is optimal wellness represented as the greatest degree of system stability (Neuman Fawcett, 2011). The NSM theory asserts nursing to care for a complex systsem, requiring an approach to assimilate and adapt into the system. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... NSM depicts stress and reaction to the stability of stress on the system. A patient and/or family reaction to the transition from oncology care to hypervigilance in primary care can experience stress, most often as psychological distress. The repeated cyclical nature of the response to the stresses of changed home life, family functioning, body image, handling daily activities, or connecting with a support group changes the client. The ideal of NSM is to attain optimal stability and reach a new developmental level (Neuman Fawcett, 2011). NSM fits the need of the PICO project through the interpretation of concepts and the dynamic nature of stressors and reactions to the basic structure (patient and/or family). A key component in utilization of the NSM for screening psychological distress after oncology care, is self report of the instability of transition to a new lifestyle. Cancer related psychological distress is widespread (Hoffman, 2012). The distress can remain hidden as priorities in cancer rehabilitation and family adjustment take place. The initial stressor of the cancer diagnosis creates a change in the patient and/or family (basic structure functioning and energy resources), however after cancer treatment (variables), the client system (patient and/or family) still is adjusting to change (lines of resistance). There, gladiator fights occurred often in arenas. One of the most famous was the Colosseum. Half of the time, gladiators were actually slaves (Wood). Though they seldom died, other spinoffs of their battles would transpire. For instance, sea battles and fights fought with wild animals would take their place (Wood). • 10. Analysis Of Van Eyck s Arnolfini Wedding Comparison Visual Analysis In the previous writings I wrote about Hendrick van der Burch, An Officer and a Standing Woman . I wrote on how well he composed the figures, the use of color and light throughout the image, and the amount of symbolism. I ended the paper saying I will compare this painting to another, and I chose Van Eyck s Arnolfini Wedding. The contrast and the similarities are great between the two the artist. First of all they re both oil painters and from Northern Europe, specifically Netherlands. Although they re from the same location, the both lived in two different time eras being 200 years apart from another. Starting with the composition of the figures of Hendrick s painting we see three human figures and an animal. The male figure is sitting down on a chair slouched drinking white wine, while wearing his officer uniform. The other two female figures appear to look like servants; one standing next to the officer, and the other in the background in another room sewing clothes. To compare this to Van Eyck s painting this is similar. In the foreground they both have a man and woman together, both being the main focus of the painting. The use of space in both of the images are quite beautiful. In one image we have three figures and an animal, and in the other one it two figures and an animal. Hendrick added another room to his image showing that it s a big room, while Van Eyck did something that was pure marvelous. He added a small mirror to the back wall ... In many situations it is a good idea to keep quiet or, better still, be diplomatic and tactfully handle sensitive issues. The line dividing honesty and diplomacy is a thin one. Wars are won by words not weapons. For centuries people have tried to solve their problems by negotiation. To escape conflicts and wars they have used words to persuade their opponents. That is where diplomacy begins. Diplomacy is an intellectual activity and decision making derived from ongoing analysis of current situations. Diplomacy includes the combination of ways and abilities which any state can use for its worthy existence in the world and for establishing cooperation with other members of international community. This statement is not adequate in connection with William Faulkner s novel, As I Lay Dying. There are many monologues by many different people, often with opposing ideas and beliefs. But then I realised I had been tricked by words, older than Anse or love, and that the same word had tricked Anse too. This quote taken from Addie s monologue reveals the untrustworthiness of language and words. Originally she believed that the word love meant something but when she became pregnant with Darl she learned that love didn t mean what the word meant and could in fact be very deceiving. I knew that that word [love] was like the others: just a shape to fill a lack. To Addie words lacks the power say what they mean and to give any other human being the experience. Words like love, pride, fear and motherhood, she believes were all made by people who had not experienced those things before. The space and emotions and ideas which language cannot fill leaves room for different interpretations, thus through languages lack, an objective view is unachievable. Throughout the novel, each character has not only brought their own viewpoints, they have also brought their own past experiences, accounts of the present and dreams of the future. In their interior monologues, more so when they slip into stream of consciousness, they meld the past, present and future and consequently view the occurrences through the coloured glass of their mind. • 21. Persuasive Essay On Cedar Lake Dnr Cedar Lake has been known for years to be a swamp of pestilence that many are afraid to touch, and for good reason. The Factories that surround the lake used to dispose of their waste directly into the water. Most of the chemicals are no longer in the water system, and the water quality is now good enough to harvest fish from the lake. The problems faced now are sedimentation that has made the lake shallow, and people s perception of the lake. The Iowa DNR working alongside the Friends of Cedar Lake have a plan to deal with those issues, and make the lake a healthy center of outdoor recreation for the city. Restoring, and improving the lake will give the people what they need. People want to enjoy the outdoors, but many don t have the time or money to travel to rural recreation areas. In The Hamburg Case Study, results showed that people felt recreation areas within the city were more important (Boll, et al 5). There are many variables, but driving for hours is not what most people want to do on their day off. That is if all of the people can drive. Children would benefit most from having a place they can go to enjoy the outdoors. If a nice lake is within walking distance, a Kid can ask to go to the lake as easy as asking to go to the park after school. The people will be motivated to get outside, and ... According to the data that was shown in Business Standard and also confirmed by BBC News, the top ten nations which account for 90% of the sea arrivals in 2015 were: Syria (49%), Afghanistan (21%), Iraq (8%), Eritrea (4%), Pakistan, Nigeria and Somalia (2 %), Sudan, Gambia and Mali (1%). Also the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees confirms that the top three nationalities of refugees are Syrian, Afghan and Iraqi. Of the refugees and migrants arriving in Europe by sea in 2015, 58% were men, 17% women and 25% children. (Wright, 2015). According to Eurostat, EU member states received over 1.2 million first time asylum applications in 2015, 4 countries (Germany, Hungary, Sweden, and Austria) received around two thirds, while Latvia received a very small part of them. Latvia did not have any experience receiving or integrating refugees from other parts of the world before refugee s crisis in Europe. At this moment, in Latvia the number of refugees is 776. Unfortunately, the society s attitude towards refugees is negative in Latvia, if Latvia could they would not take any more refugees, however, because Latvia is in EU Latvia has received an quota 1,29% of refugees and Latvia needs to give them ... In some extreme cases, geologists that go to Death Valley substitute salt into their lemonade as a refreshing treat. Gabriel Chevalier Patterned ground, which refers to a ground whose surface has developed orderly patterns, such as polygons, circles, steplike forms (terracettes), and stripes (Hunt, Charles B., Robinson, Bowles, Washburn; B104), is characteristic of and reaches a great level of development in areas of intense frost action, such as high latitude and alpine regions (Washburn, 1956). In fact, Hunt (1975) states that since the ground patterns of the two regions are similar, salt can be thought of as the warm form of ice. In the saltpan of Death Valley and the surrounding floodplain similarities of patterned ground between these two types of regions can be seen, and will be further described in this paper. Patterned Ground of Death Valley: The patterned ground morphologies, characteristic of playa environments, which formed as a result of the expansion and contraction of saline rich sediments, are similar to such crack morphologies seen in periglacial environments, as a result of freeze thaw cycles. In periglacial environments the extent of development of patterned grounds is proportional to the intensity of frost action, while in playa environments; the extent of patterned ground is proportional to salt content (Hunt, et. al.; 1966). The prominent patterned ground morphology among colder climates is ice wedge polygons that develop on the permanently frozen ground. Similarly to the permanently frozen grounds of periglacial environments, a salt hardened ground in a playa environment can develop extensive polygonal crack morphologies (Hunt, et. al.; 1966). In desert regions, such as Death Valley, desiccation cracks that lead to the formation of polygonal systems are the most prominent crack morphologies. Laws that banned the commercialization use of drugs were approved less than 80 years ago in the mayor part of the world´s countries, In the early 1900 s, drugs were not considered a serious issue, because the government believed the abuse would not stop if citizens could not get drugs after they were banned, but it would grow. • 27. Essay What are the factors behind the rise of megacities What are the factors behind the rise of Mega Cities, and to what extent are these urban areas sustainable? Megacities, defined by population, have at least 10 million inhabitants. In recent years, megacities in the developing world have grown rapidly with little or no planning. As a result, they face cries of infrastructure, poverty and unemployment. The driving force for the rise of megacities is mass urbanisation between rural urban areas, as well as rates of natural increase that are higher in urban than rural areas. An example of a megacity is Mexico City, population estimates range between 16 30 million depending on where the boundaries are drawn. Many projects have been created to make sure that the mega cities remain sustainable. For example in Dhaka, the Bangladesh Environmental Network works on reducing the high levels of arsenic in Bangladesh s water supply and combats the countries severe flooding problem. Another example of how megacities are environmentally sustainable is the Blue Skies Project in Jakarta, Indonesia. This project is pushing towards a completely natural gas conversion and is working towards the installation of dedicated filling stations, establishing a fleet of natural gas fuelled passenger busses, supplying conversion kits for gasoline fuelled cars, and creating suitable inspection and maintenance facilities. Economically, megacities thrive. Most of the time mega cities are also world cities, which mean they are resource and learning centres. This strongly suggests that business and global trade is strong between other countries (that they have high levels of synergy). Regarding how socially sustainable megacities are, lots is being done to make sure that they are socially sustainable. For example, in Jakarta there are traffic problems but they are being faced to rid the city of pollution and congestion. The city has launched a three to one policy, demanding that every car on major thruways carry at least three passengers when passing through special zones between 4:30pm to 7:30pm. • 34. Paradise Lost And Antigone Comparison To educate a man in mind and not in morals is to educate a menace to society. (Roosevelt). Since the beginning of time societies have existed, thriving among mankind. Societies dictate norms and regulations for the people living within them by establishing a status quo. Since the status quo exists, a large majority of people alter their actions and words they do and say to fit the societal norm, the status quo in order to seem normal . As common as a status quo is to societies, so is the reality of a rebel: someone who goes against the status quo, such as Antigone. Societies also have people who overly conform, in turn suffering negative consequences, such as Eve. If a comparison of both works (Antigone and Paradise Lost) are taken, it will remain obvious that Antigone materializes as a stronger, more self independent character who is against the societal norms, whereas Eve lacks enough inner strength and willpower to avoid conforming to the origin of the negativity of social norms. In general, society is not an evil device to have a part in, rather, it is completely normal. If an individual lives in a community, neighborhood, city, town, village, etc., they belong in a society. Societies provide chaos management ; they keep people supposedly in line and provide rules. Rules are not wicked, but sometimes certain rules may go against the morals of a person, making the rules a negative aspect of society.
