Aol s Balance Sheet
AOL was able to beat out Prodigy and CompuServe because of the amount of marketing that AOL
used to gain customers. AOL was famous for blanketing college campuses, book stores and random
people by buying mailing list shipping out free CD s that gave customer a free trial period to try AOL
and then successfully converting those customers to paying customer. Because of the unprecedented
amount of CD s they gave to potential customers via the mail, as well as being available in public
places, providing access to a carrier that was previously only available if the customer actually went to
the effort to acquire a disc for access. They also invested in their network to increase modem capacity,

The outcome is either a net income or net loss. This net income or loss is the extra money the
company gained or lost during it s fiscal year which cannot be seen in the balance sheet unless income

section of the balance sheet.
The Balance Sheet give investors an idea what the company owns, and owes, as well as the amount
invested by shareholders. The Balance Sheet also provides a glimpse of the company s assets,
liabilities and shareholders equity at a specific point in time. The Balance Sheet helps to give us the
financial status of the company. (Investopedia 2016)
The main purpose of the cash flow statement is to show the entrance and exit of cash, and whether the
cash gained as a result of the company s operations activities, investing or financing activities. A cash
flow statement of a healthy company would show that the density of cash entrance comes from its
operating activities. The net entrance or exist of cash should be equal to the difference between
beginning and ending balance of cash that appears in the balance sheet

Essay on Ian Wilmut and the Cloning of Dolly
Ian Wilmut and the Cloning of Dolly
Definitions of creativity vary based on different people s interpretations, yet most people agree that
creative individuals produce new ideas that can completely change or invent a domain. According to
Howard Gardner, creativity is not limited to a single domain, but is unique for all seven domains.
Creativity is based on three core elements: the relationship between the child and the master, the
relationship between an individual and the work in which he/she is engaged, and the relationship
between the individual and others, such as family and friends (Gardner, 9). I believe that Ian Wilmut is
a creative master in the logical mathematical domain because in July 1996, he completely changed his

To get a cell from an adult mammal to behave like a cell from a developing embryo had long since
been abandoned at major centers of scientific research (Healy, 176). The doubt of others didn t sway
Wilmut s ideas. He used a method called somatic cell nuclear transfer cloning in order to produce
Dolly. This same technique has now been used for application of human stem cells to generate
differentiated tissues (and this same technique could also be used to clone a human from an adult cell).
Click on this animation on somatic cell nuclear transfer. Wilmut first took a nucleus from the
mammary cells of a dead six year old Finn Dorset Sheep. He then substituted the nucleus for the
nucleus of an egg from a different sheep a Poll Dorset. Next, Wilmut implanted the egg into an ewe of
a Scottish Blackface who became Dolly s surrogate mother. Five months later, Dolly was born (Wills,
22). Wilmut used three different breeds of sheep so it would be apparent that Dolly s genes did not
come from her surrogate mother nor the egg donor, but from the six year old, Finn Dorset. In addition,
in order to account for problems such as cells being in the wrong stage, or having the wrong set of
genes turned on, or having cells that are too metabolically active, Wilmut starved the cells for several
days. He then fused the starved cell with enucleated eggs. This made the DNA copying device in the
cell to stop by arresting the cell cycle and forcing the cells into

A Critical Analysis of The Rocking Horse Winner by D.H. Lawrence and The Destructors by Graham
Greene
In both stories, The Rocking Horse Winner by D.H. Lawrence and The Destructors by Graham Greene
we see the common theme of
wanting to be envied by others because of what we have or can do. The need to do better, have
prestige and more power than anyone else is a
very common human conflict that is dealt with on all levels of humanity. The emotional environment
that man grows and develops in plays
a factor in how he approaches everyday life.
Humanity is always trying to prove to others what they have is better than anyone elses. Paul s mother,

destroyed it would send out a message to all the other gangs and gain the fame and respect that they
wanted. Blackie gave up his leadership
role easily because his earlier ideas of stealing had not really gained any recognition for his gang like
he wanted. He could see the possibility of
success and he overlooked his own pride and worth to go after it. Materialism can be seen in this
because they are using the destruction of a
house to gain respect, but on the other hand the modernist view can be seen because something has to
either build something up or destroy it.
All of these main characters shared a lot of common attributes. The first and most important attribute
was trying to overcome multiple
obstacles to get to their goal. In The Rocking Horse Winner , Paul found his rocking horse and the
ability to pick winning horses the way to
show his mother how successful he was along with the money that he won. He exerted himself
mentally and physically to get to his goal. He is
seen in the nursery ..on his big rocking horse, charging madly into space, with a frenzy that made the
little girls peer at him uneasily...his eyes

happiness that he wanted his mother to have.

Themes In Tao Te Ching
The ideas presented in the Tao Te Ching are similar to those of the Bhagavadgita in many ways. There
is an emphasis on ridding oneself of worldly desires so that one can have self control over their own
senses since Conquering yourself is true strength (Addiss, Page 33). The Tao suggests that creating
order can be good, as long as one eventually allows the creation to undergo its own journey and not
try to dictate it. Give birth and do not possess. Excel but do not rule (Addiss, Page 10). There are
numerous references about what makes a good ruler in the Tao. I do nothing and people transform
themselves. I enjoy serenity and people govern themselves (Addiss, Page 57). The idea that when
people are left to themselves they eventually are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Throughout his life he had forsaken his goals, for the goals of the Japanese emperor. In doing so, he
had performed acts against the prisoners that he felt were morally wrong. He had always used his
powers for the sake of the empire and the emperor. His idea of his own goodness, though, was
becoming harder and harder to hold on to (Flanagan, Page 349). This quote shows that one can spend
their whole life serving a master, but at the end of life, it is not enough to follow the rules set by those
above one, but one must feel as if they attained and followed their own moral standards. The theme
present in the Tao and the Bhagavadgita that entails forsaking worldly possessions and desires would
create a more group oriented mentality and would allow all humans a basic standard of living. Instead
of having an extreme wage gap between classes, all people could have their necessities provided for. A
world in which possessions were not as highly valued would lead to less stealing, an ideal presented in
the Bhagavadgita. All these factors practiced together would lead to a more peaceful, group oriented,
non discriminatory

Essay on Managed Care and Utilization Management
Utilization management is described as the implementation of guidelines which reduce unnecessary
use of medical resources (Kongstvedt, 2007, p.190). There are a variety of methods used to ensure
costs are kept at a minimum without compromising patient care. The use of utilization management
(UM) are yielding financial benefits resulting in managed care organizations (MCOs) and facilities
investing more into UM programs.
Health maintenance organization s (HMOs) use of the primary care physician (PCP) as the gatekeeper
initially had MCOs view restrictions as a negative approach to patients choices. However, some
necessary steps have started to be implemented which reduce unnecessary utilization by enforcing
some restrictions. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Self care and medical consumerism programs are also a part of DM. They provide member with
access to medical information that will assist them in caring for themselves and knowing when to
consult a professional. These programs are now an accreditation standard for health plans by the
National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) as they promote consumer directed health (CDH).
The benefits of self care programs show $2.50 to $3.50 saved for every $1 invested by health plans. A
HMO study done showed a decrease in outpatient visits as well as a 2:1 return (Kongstvedt, 2007,
p.192). Another different study showed a decrease in pediatric acute care visits also.
Other programs under DM that have shown to be beneficial to both the members and the health plans
are, shared decision making programs and medical informatics. PPOs, HMOs and CDHPs have
preventive services programs being implemented. Preventive services include services such as:
immunizations, mammograms, physicals, and counseling. An independent study on an indemnity plan
that had prenatal preventive services showed that members who enrolled into this program had an
average of $3200 less per delivery than those who had not (p.194). Health risk appraisals are a
program geared to obtain information from members regarding activities or behaviors that can affect
their health status (Kongstvedt, 2007,p.193). When the health plan obtains this information it

most individuals have learned to do since taking their first steps. However, kicking in the sport of

The placement of the non kicking foot determines the direction of the kick. The support leg also acts
as a stabilizer by flexing at the knee once the foot makes contact with the ground. (Lees, Asai,

very diverse abilities. You can see both the direction of the planted foot and the flexion of the knee in

A 43 year old woman lies about her age and falls for a younger man who doesn t know the truth.
STORY COMMENTS
SALAD DAYS is a script that presents with an enjoyable, high concept premise. The idea of an older
woman pretending to be a younger woman and lying to her boyfriend/husband is a great setup for
comedy, conflict, and character development. One can envision the antics and capers the protagonist
will endure to keep her age a secret. Plenty of humor can be generated.
The script has the opportunity to examine themes about ageless love and the age gap between men and
women.
While the concept is solid, the first act requires more development.
The first act sets up the ordinary world of the protagonist, Suzy. She works for a candy company, ...

The conversation on page 29 isn t very compelling: Do you find me desirable?
On page 30, it s not clear why Valentino would ask, What dating site? given they met on a dating site.
The scene in the hospital with the baby works better without the added dialogue. Just the visual of
Suzy holding the baby is needed, vs. Valentino asking her Want a baby too?
Create a separate scene about being evicted versus the same scene with them in the car.
Suzy is sweet. She s definitely good hearted and likable. She s insecure and this makes her vulnerable.
She has inner conflict about her age. She has good potential to be a comedic character, but continue to
develop her comedic side by showing how she covers up the truth about her age. Make sure to identify
how she grows as a character and how her feelings about her age changes.
Bob and Diane are both great sidekicks. They sound and act like natural comedic characters.
Valentino is more likable when he s a bit on edge. Don t make him too nice. There s no tension in that.
To create tension and chemistry there has to be resistance. He becomes way too immature and

The Reflection Of A Motorcycle Riders Group As An...
On the class of ENGL 1301, during the first month, we focused on discourse communities: which in
fact are a group of people who share same values, beliefs, ideas, interest using same language and
method of communication to achieve a certain goal. The people in discourse communities requires the
certain level of knowledge and expertise in the field and becomes part of the discourse community by
understanding and using logos, ethos, and pathos to discuss, explain and argue their own interest and
knowledge within their own community using the own method of communication. Any people
involved in the certain group can be in discourse communities if they share same ideas and view with
common interest. Motorcycle Riders Group as an discourse community has its importance to readers
because it explains and make more clear what a discourse community is and the ways of getting into
the community. By mastering logos, ethos and pathos I can say that I have successfully entered

Character Analysis Of Jack London s To Build A Fire
Character Analysis of Jack London s To Build a Fire
Jack London s short story, To Build a Fire, is a heart wrenching story of a man s struggle to defy the
forces of nature in the most extreme environment of the Yukon Trail, Canada. While warning against
traveling alone, the man sets out by himself with only a dog at his side on a long journey across the
pond in a frigid weather to meet his fellow campers. The man is full of hubris. He believes he can
conquer Mother Nature, and this belief ultimately leads him to his tragic demise. In the beginning of
the story, the author mentions that it was a clear day, and yet there seemed an intangible pall over the
face of things, a subtle gloom that made the day dark, and that was due to the absence of sun (London
157). He tries to emphasize how a cold, merciless, and hostile environment of the Yukon in
subfreezing temperatures. However, this does not intimidate the man. He is so full of self confidence
that he feels that he is ready and fully prepared for the journey, ignoring the facts that he is a new
migrant to the region, and this is his first winter, so he might not fully accustomed to the climate. The
old timer from Sulphur Creek who has been living there for a long time and obviously has a lot of
knowledge and experience with the region, warns him about how cold it sometimes got in the country
(London 162) and no man must travel alone in the Klondike after fifty below (London 164). However,

Shawshank Redemption Behaviorism
The book Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption shows the stretch of behaviorism. It explored
how being separated from something for a long time can affect the instincts of the individual. In the
story, when prisoners get out they are confused, feel unsafe, and think about commiting a crime just to
get back into prison. This story shows how being rewarded and being punished makes the individual
and makes an identity. Behaviorism is the idea that your behavior is determined by punishment or
reward. In Shawshank this is an important theme as it shows how the prisoners change and adapt in
prison. Prisoners get so used to prison life, that when they leave it is impossible for them to fit in. For
example, Brooks was in prison for about 50 years and when he got paroled he began crying as he was
leaving the prison. Brooks was the librarian in prison and held an important role compared to other
prisoners. He didn t last very long and died within six months outside of prison; Brooks helped raise a

The Power Of Corruption And Absolutism In Movie Analysis...
Corruption and absolutism are ruling France. The movie well describes France as a big corrupted state
where the poverty is on such a bad level, therefore, the people of France are starting to realize that the
king, Louis XVI, should be taken down. The idea of to getting France to change to better is visualized
through the main characters which are not trying to help just France but also the French people.
However, the nobles are making it impossible for anybody, who is not on their side, to even get a
chance to see the king and the noble women have the power of corruption which is shown in many
ways throughout the movie.
The main character, which in the movie is called the Engineer, is a noble from the southwest part of
France. He may not be as rich as the nobles that live in Versailles, but he is honest, straight forward,
compassionate, and pure hearted. He is willing to take action, he understands the poverty, and he is
seeking the progress of France. His family owns a property in the southwest France that is surrounded
by swamps. The swamps are a very good place for mosquitoes to reproduce and, with the poverty
being on such a bad level, the people are starting to get sick and they even die. The fever that the
mosquitoes are transmitting is killing Engineer s people so he is going to do everything he can to stop
it. The Engineer s plan is to go to Versailles and talk to the king about drying out the swamps so his
people will stop getting sick. On his journey to see the

Summary Of The Night Sky
It was late, the moon already high in the night sky, all except for George lie sleeping softly in the
bunkhouse. An unfinished game of solitaire, sprawled out across the barn floor. The barn was lit only
by a single red candle on an overturned crate. Next to the candle was an opened red pack of cigarettes
and a dirty brass lighter. Fresh hay was scattered around the cold floor, a job unfinished. In the corner
of the shadowed barn, a spider clung to its web as it slowly devoured a helpless fly. Curley s wife lay
still, untouched, the sight almost had a natural feeling about it, as though this was all her life was ever
to amount to, she lay dead amongst the hay; it was as thought the others had forgotten about her and
merely continued with their dreary lives. A rusted shovel leaned against the wall, next to a freshly dug
mound of earth, covering Candy s lifeless dog. Lastly, spread across the floor, was a ragged length of
cold consuming rope, with a noose tied in one frayed end. George crouched before the rope, hunched
over almost questioningly, as though judging whether or not this was his best way out of the situation.
He was dirty and unshaven; he had yet not bothered to change from his gloomy, threadbare work

Environmental Conservation in Tampa Bay
Give a hoot, don t pollute! This slogan was popular in the 1970 s when a cute animated owl named
Woodsy the Owl was introduced on television in a public service announcement by the U. S. Forestry
service in an antilitter campaign. Don t be a dirty bird was an additional slogan associated with this
cute character to grab the attention of children as well as adults, to inform the public to not litter.
Taught from an early age the importance of a clean environment, it has been a goal throughout my life
to protect natural resources, and the importance of protecting the environment has been taught to my
child as well. The basic principles of conservation of the environment are simple: protect the air, land,
and water resources. Conservation refers to actions that aim to protect natural environments from
present and future change. For example, nature conservancies purchase land that is deemed to be at
risk in order to prevent exploitation of the area for residential, industrial, or agricultural development (
Conservation, 2009). Environmental conservation in the Tampa Bay area carries a great importance
because of our natural resources with estuaries for wildlife and the aquifer, which supplies clean water
to residents in the area. Tampa Bay residents interested in environmental conservation, have access to

Thomas Jefferson Vs Hamilton
After the Constitution was ratified people had their own opinion about it. The Federalists who were
James Madison, Alexander Hamilton, and John Jay just to name a few has a loose interpretation of the
Constitution. On the other hand, the Republicans which was lead by Thomas Jefferson had a very
strict interpretation of the Constitution. Both parties had a different view which will cause controversy
later on.
The Federalist who was mainly lead by Alexander Hamilton, who had the position of a treasure when
George Washington was president, wanted a strong central government that rivaled Great Britain.
While, Thomas Jefferson, who was in charge of foreign relations (starting 1789), wanted a small,
farmer to producer nation. Hamilton while being

How To Build A Rocket
This is my 9th year in 4 H. After several years of food projects, showing sheep, and building rockets, I
have built one of my most challenging rockets yet. I will talk about the challenges of the rocket, what I
have learned and how the flights went.
This was a difficult rocket to say the least. It was made challenging by the fact that the fins, which
needed to be rounded, were very thin or very curved which caused possible miss sanding of the fins.
Along with this, I came across a point in which I could decide between two ways of constructing the
rocket. I could either have it separate at the nose cone, or at the AV bay which I decided to put in. I
chose to have it separate at the AV bay because the electronic were kept safer that way.

Thus, we went over two main issues caused by inappropriate personality test: time and money. They
are also two key elements for an organization. Let s go deeper to understand why these two points can
decrease the efficiency of an organization. Time is very important for an organization (most of the
time concerning companies), the quicker, the better. Indeed, the influence of time on companies is due
in order to satisfy customers. This means to have the best employee as possible, and the first step is
obviously the recruitment with a personality test. Of course it takes time to do a test when we recruit
someone. However, we should see this on the long term and not short term because the benefit is
really huge. Moreover, employers or managers usually forget that employees are the basement of an
organization, and the stronger, the better, which means having the correct employee with the correct
skills and abilities for the job specifications. Job specification is the Statement of the needed
knowledge, skills, and abilities of the person who is to perform the position. The different duties and
responsibilities performed by only one employee . Money is fundamental for an organization, and this

Commercial Fishing In New England
Commercial fishing in New England is not sustainable. Commercial fishing is the catching of fish for
profit and, as with other profit making activities, there are trade offs between a pure capitalistic market
and the damage it does to resources. For commercial fishing, this trade off is that the more fish the
fishermen catch, the more damage it does to the fish population. To make commercial fishing
sustainable, large regulations need to be in place, as Jack said. However, large regulations of a free
market are usually not accepted in America and would not be put in place in time to save the fish and
sustain commercial fishing.
The population of many fish species have decreased drastically through the years and, even with
current regulations, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The definition of Capitalism according to Merriam Webster is an economic system characterized by
private or corporate ownership of capital goods, by investments that are determined by private
decision, and by prices, production, and the distribution of goods that are determined mainly by
competition in a Free Market. This means that the free market, or in this case commercial fishing, is
not controlled by the government because that is the definition of capitalism. Having big restrictions
on fishing would be seen as a restriction of the free market. Although regulations are put on the free
market, the size of regulations needed to sustain fish population and save commercial fishing would
not be tolerated by many political parties. The regulations would never be put in place. Unless
America changes its capitalist view, the large regulations needed to sustain commercial fishing will
not happen.
The changes needed for sustainable fishing are too big and do not fit with America s view of the
economic system. Unfortunately, without these changes, the fish population will continue to decline.
So, you can see that sustainable fishing in new England is not possible. Although New England and
the US cannot have sustainable fishing because of their capitalistic values, as shown throughout
history their values may

Advocacy Competences of School Counselors
Advocacy is one of the major roles for professional school counselors. The concept of advocacy is the
tradition of professional counselors, but the role of advocacy in school counseling was not valued until
the recent times. The purpose of this paper is to give a reflection about the article on school counseling
in order to show and describe the advocacy competencies of school counselors. The article was written
by Jerry Trusty and Duane Brown. The article was set to provide a structure that helps to
conceptualize advocacy in order to develop advocacy competencies. School counselors have a key
role in advocating for academic success for each student in the school. The advocacy makes the
counselors have a leadership role in encouraging and promoting school reforms. The advocacy efforts
of school counselors aim to eliminate obstacles preventing the development of students and to create
chances for all students to learn. It also aims to ensure students have access to the school curriculum
that fits their needs. School counselors collaborate with other people within and outside the school to
assist students meet their learning needs. In addition, advocacy promotes positive and systematic
change in schools (Trusty Brown, 2005). The advocacy competencies according to Trusty and Brown
s article were designed from literature reviews, personal experiences as school counselors. They
categorized them into three groups, that is, counselor s dispositions, knowledge and skills.

Function and Structure of Hemoglobin and Myoglobin Essay
Myoglobin consist of single polypeptide chain that made up of 153 amino acid and ahs a size of 18
kDa. Its three dimensional structure was first determined by X ray crystallography by John Kendrew
in 1957. Myoglobin is a typical globular protein in that it is a highly folded compact structure with
most of the hydrophobic amino acid residues buried in the interior and many of the polar residues on
the surface. X ray crystallography revealed that the single polypeptide chain of myoglobin consist of
entirely of eight (labelled A H) alpha helical. Within a hydrophobic crevice formed by the folding
polypeptide chain is the heme prosthetic group. This nonopolypepetide unit is noncovalently bound to
myoglobin and is essential for the biological ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One of these is to a histidine residue which lies eight residues along helix F of hemoglobin, the
proximal hitidine (His F8). The sixth bond is to one of the oxygen atoms in a molecule of oxygen.
Near to where the oxygen binds to the heme group is another histidine residue, the distal histidine (His
E7). This serves two very important functions. First, preventing neightboring hemoglobin molecules
coming into contact with one another and oxidizing to the Fe3+ state, cause no longer bind to oxygen.
Sencond, lowering the affinity of the heme for CO by preventing carbon monoxide binding with the
most favourable configuration to the Fe2+. This is important because the protein can no longer bind
oxygen once CO has bound irreversibly to the heme,. Thus, although the oxygen binding site in
hemoglobin and myglobin is only a small part of the whole protein, the polypeptide chain modulates
the function of the heme prosthetic group.
Hemoglobin can bind four molecules of oxygen due to its four heme groups, whereas myoglobin can
only bind to one oxygen. The kinetics of oxygen binding of hemoglobin and myoglobin are quite
different. Myoglogin exhibit a hyperbolic oxygen binding curve and hemoglobin exhibit a sigmoidial
oxygen binding curve. The sigmodial curve suggest the the cooperative exist in the hemolglobing
oxygen bind mechanism. The initial binding of an oxygen molecule to a hemoglobin subunit

Herbert Vacuum
The President of the USA in 1929 was Herbert Vacuum of the Democratic Party. The US economy
was fundamentally sound when he took office, and yet in October the US stock market based in Wall
Street, Washington DC crashed through the floor, sparking off a World Depression. The basic problem
was that there were too many shareholders lots of people had speculated on the stock market with
money borrowed from banks, with the result that they sold in a panic the minute share prices rose,
starting an upward spiral. The reason that confidence declined so quickly lay in the fact that consumer
industries were producing too few goods, with the result that sales (and therefore profits and
dividends) were falling. Everyone who wanted these goods in

Meaning In Art
The meaning of a unadorned sculpture that one passes by on a routine bases, can end up having a
much more monumental and deep meaning than what an individual may have discerned. Untitled is
just one example of the multiple pieces of artwork that stands tall throughout the Lewis and Clark
Community College campus. A strong representation of many different feelings is given off to the
buildings, its surroundings, and the students and faculty that walk among it. Each physical
characteristic comes together to design the horse and can be analyzed to have meanings like
recognition, nobility, and guidance. Outside Trimpe Hall on Lewis and Clark Community College
campus sits a majestic, light brown, wood colored figure. It is placed directly on the ground, along the
side of a little stone pathway. Little patches of grass are peeking up through the mulch. The shape of
the statue resembles that of a horse. As you move closer to the artwork you notice pieces of logs are
carved in a perfect way in order to intertwine between each other leaving just the right amount of
spaces in between. The front end, which faces the parking lot, is slightly facing downwards, as if it
were avoiding something in the distance. The horse has a strong stance with a sturdy body structure.

  • 3. Essay on Ian Wilmut and the Cloning of Dolly Ian Wilmut and the Cloning of Dolly Definitions of creativity vary based on different people s interpretations, yet most people agree that creative individuals produce new ideas that can completely change or invent a domain. According to Howard Gardner, creativity is not limited to a single domain, but is unique for all seven domains. Creativity is based on three core elements: the relationship between the child and the master, the relationship between an individual and the work in which he/she is engaged, and the relationship between the individual and others, such as family and friends (Gardner, 9). I believe that Ian Wilmut is a creative master in the logical mathematical domain because in July 1996, he completely changed his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... To get a cell from an adult mammal to behave like a cell from a developing embryo had long since been abandoned at major centers of scientific research (Healy, 176). The doubt of others didn t sway Wilmut s ideas. He used a method called somatic cell nuclear transfer cloning in order to produce Dolly. This same technique has now been used for application of human stem cells to generate differentiated tissues (and this same technique could also be used to clone a human from an adult cell). Click on this animation on somatic cell nuclear transfer. Wilmut first took a nucleus from the mammary cells of a dead six year old Finn Dorset Sheep. He then substituted the nucleus for the nucleus of an egg from a different sheep a Poll Dorset. Next, Wilmut implanted the egg into an ewe of a Scottish Blackface who became Dolly s surrogate mother. Five months later, Dolly was born (Wills, 22). Wilmut used three different breeds of sheep so it would be apparent that Dolly s genes did not come from her surrogate mother nor the egg donor, but from the six year old, Finn Dorset. In addition, in order to account for problems such as cells being in the wrong stage, or having the wrong set of genes turned on, or having cells that are too metabolically active, Wilmut starved the cells for several days. He then fused the starved cell with enucleated eggs. This made the DNA copying device in the cell to stop by arresting the cell cycle and forcing the cells into ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Lawrence and The Destructors by Graham Greene In both stories, The Rocking Horse Winner by D.H. The need to do better, have prestige and more power than anyone else is a very common human conflict that is dealt with on all levels of humanity. Once the house was destroyed it would send out a message to all the other gangs and gain the fame and respect that they wanted. Blackie gave up his leadership role easily because his earlier ideas of stealing had not really gained any recognition for his gang like he wanted. He could see the possibility of success and he overlooked his own pride and worth to go after it. Materialism can be seen in this because they are using the destruction of a house to gain respect, but on the other hand the modernist view can be seen because something has to either build something up or destroy it. All of these main characters shared a lot of common attributes. The first and most important attribute was trying to overcome multiple obstacles to get to their goal. There is an emphasis on ridding oneself of worldly desires so that one can have self control over their own senses since Conquering yourself is true strength (Addiss, Page 33). The Tao suggests that creating order can be good, as long as one eventually allows the creation to undergo its own journey and not try to dictate it. Give birth and do not possess. Excel but do not rule (Addiss, Page 10). There are numerous references about what makes a good ruler in the Tao. I do nothing and people transform themselves. Throughout his life he had forsaken his goals, for the goals of the Japanese emperor. In doing so, he had performed acts against the prisoners that he felt were morally wrong. He had always used his powers for the sake of the empire and the emperor. His idea of his own goodness, though, was becoming harder and harder to hold on to (Flanagan, Page 349). This quote shows that one can spend their whole life serving a master, but at the end of life, it is not enough to follow the rules set by those above one, but one must feel as if they attained and followed their own moral standards. The theme present in the Tao and the Bhagavadgita that entails forsaking worldly possessions and desires would create a more group oriented mentality and would allow all humans a basic standard of living. Instead of having an extreme wage gap between classes, all people could have their necessities provided for. A world in which possessions were not as highly valued would lead to less stealing, an ideal presented in the Bhagavadgita. On the class of ENGL 1301, during the first month, we focused on discourse communities: which in fact are a group of people who share same values, beliefs, ideas, interest using same language and method of communication to achieve a certain goal. The people in discourse communities requires the certain level of knowledge and expertise in the field and becomes part of the discourse community by understanding and using logos, ethos, and pathos to discuss, explain and argue their own interest and knowledge within their own community using the own method of communication. Any people involved in the certain group can be in discourse communities if they share same ideas and view with common interest. Character Analysis Of Jack London s To Build A Fire Character Analysis of Jack London s To Build a Fire Jack London s short story, To Build a Fire, is a heart wrenching story of a man s struggle to defy the forces of nature in the most extreme environment of the Yukon Trail, Canada. While warning against traveling alone, the man sets out by himself with only a dog at his side on a long journey across the pond in a frigid weather to meet his fellow campers. The man is full of hubris. He believes he can conquer Mother Nature, and this belief ultimately leads him to his tragic demise. In the beginning of the story, the author mentions that it was a clear day, and yet there seemed an intangible pall over the face of things, a subtle gloom that made the day dark, and that was due to the absence of sun (London 157). He tries to emphasize how a cold, merciless, and hostile environment of the Yukon in subfreezing temperatures. However, this does not intimidate the man. He is so full of self confidence that he feels that he is ready and fully prepared for the journey, ignoring the facts that he is a new migrant to the region, and this is his first winter, so he might not fully accustomed to the climate. The old timer from Sulphur Creek who has been living there for a long time and obviously has a lot of knowledge and experience with the region, warns him about how cold it sometimes got in the country (London 162) and no man must travel alone in the Klondike after fifty below (London 164). This story shows how being rewarded and being punished makes the individual and makes an identity. Behaviorism is the idea that your behavior is determined by punishment or reward. In Shawshank this is an important theme as it shows how the prisoners change and adapt in prison. Prisoners get so used to prison life, that when they leave it is impossible for them to fit in. For example, Brooks was in prison for about 50 years and when he got paroled he began crying as he was leaving the prison. Next to the candle was an opened red pack of cigarettes and a dirty brass lighter. Fresh hay was scattered around the cold floor, a job unfinished. In the corner of the shadowed barn, a spider clung to its web as it slowly devoured a helpless fly. Curley s wife lay still, untouched, the sight almost had a natural feeling about it, as though this was all her life was ever to amount to, she lay dead amongst the hay; it was as thought the others had forgotten about her and merely continued with their dreary lives. A rusted shovel leaned against the wall, next to a freshly dug mound of earth, covering Candy s lifeless dog. Lastly, spread across the floor, was a ragged length of cold consuming rope, with a noose tied in one frayed end. George crouched before the rope, hunched over almost questioningly, as though judging whether or not this was his best way out of the situation. He was dirty and unshaven; he had yet not bothered to change from his gloomy, threadbare work attire. Conservation refers to actions that aim to protect natural environments from present and future change. Commercial fishing is the catching of fish for profit and, as with other profit making activities, there are trade offs between a pure capitalistic market and the damage it does to resources. For commercial fishing, this trade off is that the more fish the fishermen catch, the more damage it does to the fish population. To make commercial fishing sustainable, large regulations need to be in place, as Jack said. However, large regulations of a free market are usually not accepted in America and would not be put in place in time to save the fish and sustain commercial fishing. The definition of Capitalism according to Merriam Webster is an economic system characterized by private or corporate ownership of capital goods, by investments that are determined by private decision, and by prices, production, and the distribution of goods that are determined mainly by competition in a Free Market. This means that the free market, or in this case commercial fishing, is not controlled by the government because that is the definition of capitalism. Having big restrictions on fishing would be seen as a restriction of the free market. Although regulations are put on the free market, the size of regulations needed to sustain fish population and save commercial fishing would not be tolerated by many political parties. The regulations would never be put in place. Unless America changes its capitalist view, the large regulations needed to sustain commercial fishing will not happen. The changes needed for sustainable fishing are too big and do not fit with America s view of the economic system. Unfortunately, without these changes, the fish population will continue to decline. Its three dimensional structure was first determined by X ray crystallography by John Kendrew in 1957. Myoglobin is a typical globular protein in that it is a highly folded compact structure with most of the hydrophobic amino acid residues buried in the interior and many of the polar residues on the surface. X ray crystallography revealed that the single polypeptide chain of myoglobin consist of entirely of eight (labelled A H) alpha helical. One of these is to a histidine residue which lies eight residues along helix F of hemoglobin, the proximal hitidine (His F8). The sixth bond is to one of the oxygen atoms in a molecule of oxygen. Near to where the oxygen binds to the heme group is another histidine residue, the distal histidine (His E7). This serves two very important functions. First, preventing neightboring hemoglobin molecules coming into contact with one another and oxidizing to the Fe3+ state, cause no longer bind to oxygen. Sencond, lowering the affinity of the heme for CO by preventing carbon monoxide binding with the most favourable configuration to the Fe2+. This is important because the protein can no longer bind oxygen once CO has bound irreversibly to the heme,. Thus, although the oxygen binding site in hemoglobin and myglobin is only a small part of the whole protein, the polypeptide chain modulates the function of the heme prosthetic group. Hemoglobin can bind four molecules of oxygen due to its four heme groups, whereas myoglobin can only bind to one oxygen. The kinetics of oxygen binding of hemoglobin and myoglobin are quite different. Myoglogin exhibit a hyperbolic oxygen binding curve and hemoglobin exhibit a sigmoidial oxygen binding curve.
