Analysis Of The Book The Things They Carried
1. Birth October 1, 1946; present 2. The things they carried was written in the late 1980 s and
published in 1990. The novel acts as a response to the era it discusses by solidifying the un
generalized version of war through fictional anecdotes from the narrator and characters. The truth is
never portrayed through historic context or media, and with this novel, the author was able to
reciprocate the emotions felt by soldiers from the graphic scenes or actions envisioned/written. 3.
Factors that influenced the author to publish this novel was partly due to his way of coping after war,
using stories to keep the imagination alive and causing the audience to reflect on their own lives.
Another is telling an honest view of the what war really is and how the soldiers were affected from the
start of being drafted until life after the Vietnam War, trying to find their identity. 4. The novel version
I used was paperback. To complete this section, I used websites for articles about O Brien s biography,
interviews from the author himself, and different analysis of the novel as my sources to understand the
varied perspectives.
II. Diction: 1. The diction for this novel is connotative. Although his writing can be straightforward
and literal, his reflection can provide varied meanings to what his ideas are. The author often changes
literary devices to get his point across. In one chapter, he can be specific on the little details that
depicts one s entity and then he can take

How Did Marilyn Monroe Impact Society
Imperfection is beauty, madness is genius and it s better to be absolutely ridiculous than absolutely
boring ( Marilyn Monroe Quotes ). Marilyn Monroe had many hardships throughout her life. For
example, living in multiple different foster homes and having troubles with three marriages but was
still able to have a positive look on her life most of the time. She was an inspiration to be proud and
happy with who you are. Marilyn Monroe had many struggles throughout her life but found the
strength to overcome them and have a pretty large impact on society.
Marilyn Monroe grew up as a very lonely child due to her mother s mental illness and living in foster
homes. She lived in over twelve different foster homes (Lewis 1). Marilyn s mother, Gladys Baker,
became very depressed soon after Marilyn was born and was institutionalized, sending Marilyn into
her first foster home ( Modern American Poetry 1). Albert and Ida Bolender were Marilyn s first set of
foster parents, and she lived with them the first seven years of her life ( Modern American Poetry 1).

Marilyn played in multiple movies, in which she accidently created a dumb blonde character for
herself, and she did not like or want to be perceived as the dumb blonde so she started reading and
writing more (Monroe viii ix). Marilyn was a self educated women who had overcame a debilitating
stutter, dyslexia, and severe stage fright to become an international Hollywood icon ( New
Biography... 1). When Marilyn became very sad, and depressed while living with her second husband
she decided enough was enough and that she was going or start taking care of herself (Monroe 127).

Meglinide Research Paper
Class III: Meglitinides
The meglitinides are short acting drugs. They are similar to sulfonylureas in that they augment insulin
secretion or insulin release from pancreatic beta cells. They are only slightly less effective than
sulfonylureas in reducing glycemia. They are not sulfonylureas and can be used in patients allergic to
sulfonylureas. They cause less hypoglycemia as compared to sulfonylureas .They have a similar risk
for weight gain though as the sulfonylureas.
The 2 meglitinides that are available are Repaglinide and Nateglinide.
Pharmacology of the meglitinides: The meglitinides work almost similiarly just as the sulfonylureas
by increasing the release of insulin from the pancreatic beta cells. They act on a different binding site
on the sulfonylurea receptor of the beta cell ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When the kidneys functionality is reduced, the active metabolizers accumulate and hypoglycemia

kidneys. Patients with renal failure do not need to have dose adjustments. Repaglinide can be chosen
for a patient with chronic kidney disease who is allergic to sulfonylureas.
Repaglinide is also shown to be more effective than nateglinide in decreasing

Hbs Mt. Everest Case Study Essay
HBS Case Review: Mt. Everest Case Study
Introduction
The case of Mt. Everest focuses on two commercial expeditions, Adventure Consultants and Mountain
Madness, and the tragic event on May 10, 1996. These two commercial expeditions were lead by Rob
Hall and Scott Fischer, and were consisted of 20 members. Both leaders were experienced climbers,
but due to several factors, the expedition resulted into five deaths including Hall and Fischer. The
event has thought managers to evaluate the importance of leadership together with its internal and
external factors that managers should consider to survive in the high risk business world.

Lack of psychological safety within the team members failed to fix cognitive bias of irrationality. If
members developed trust within the team, cognitive bias could have been prevented or at least
minimized. The truth that climbers might make irrational decisions and find it hard to turn back when
they are so closed to the summit was obvious, but teammates seeing this problem did not speak up
since they did not feel that their thoughts were welcome and felt uneasy. More cognitive biases could
also been prevented to lessen the complex system of the expedition. Since climbing Mt. Everest is
already a high risk venture, any additional problems such as irrational decisions can cause a crisis.
Using the early sign of issues with Hall s team s progress, it was obvious that the probability of failing
the expedition was high before the team even started. Hall could have used the issues as a sign of the
complex systems that exist, and could have used this knowledge to prevent any irrational decisions.
The complex systems and the lack of psychological safety also contributed to the tragedy. The team
members failed to communicate and trust each other, which then added more problems to the complex
systems. For instance, Boukreev s could have spoken up to his team leader, Fischer, about his
concerns regarding his team members lacking experience to begin with. By speaking up, he could
have prevented more chain reaction due to lack of communications and feedback within the

Racism In John Updike s Rabbit Run And Rabbit Redwell
John Updike has written many novels. One of his most famous series is called Rabbit Omnibus. John
Updike is known for his famous character in the Rabbit Omnibus books called Harry. John Updike s
books called Rabbit Run and Rabbit Redux shows us racism, theme, and character change.
First, in Rabbit Run and Rabbit Redux we see racism. In Rabbit Redux , it says, Now here s how. You
is a Big Black man sittin right there. You is chained to the chained to that chair. And I is white as snow
(296). This quote in the story shows how they like to play games involving slavery. Racism is a big
issue in both books. Readers can see this throughout the books with the different characters. The quote
is one character talking to the other. Another quote showing racism in Rabbit Redux is I don t follow
this racist rap, you can t turn on television now without black face spitting at you (47). In the book
several times we see Rabbit saying there are too many blacks. The racism is not as bad in Rabbit
Redux as in Rabbit Run . Between the two books, readers can see different sides of John Updike s
writing styles. In one book, he uses harsher words and more racist words than the other book. Both of
these books include elements of racism.
Second, in Rabbit Run and Rabbit Redux we see that the themes are kind of the same. The theme in
both novels involves them struggling with something in their life. In Rabbit Redux the theme is
Freedom. Rabbit wants freedom from his

Argumentative Essay On Social Media Addiction
Social Media has become a plague in our world today, it s like a disease that is spread around very
quickly, and super fast. For example, some old family members of mine, who I would have never
expected to use social media are now using it, and they have become very good at using it, their black
belts of social media if you will. They heard young people talking about it, so it made them wonder if
teenagers are excited about this whole new trend might as well give it a shot, and see how well we do
with it ourselves. But what they don t know is that social media is good for us for some good reason

Facebook jealousy is bad, for that it causes so many problems and arguments with your partner which
in term can lead us to even consider cheating.
Cheating is another negative implication from using too much Facebook. By using Facebook in a
unhealthy matter it increases the chance of someone cheating, it definitely increases the odds of a
couple to cheat on each other, because Facebook has a private message feature allowing anybody to
send a message where just the two people are the only ones that can read and see the messages. To
some extent if the person doesn t want their partner to find out they re cheating, they will even create a
fake profile to reach out to the person. A great example of this is one of my uncles actually cheated on
his girlfriend using the same tactic I talked about. He used the private message feature which allowed
him to keep his affair a secret from his girlfriend. While his girlfriend thought he was at work, he was
actually cheating on another girl.
Low self esteem is another negative implication, that can happen to us for using Facebook for such a
long time! By using Facebook too much our self esteem will drop, because we ll always be thinking
about what other s think about our profile, posts, updates, and also being concerned about having the
perfect life, and getting likes. There are so many great examples of this, but one that always comes to
mind is the tv show Catfish. Mostly all of the time the person

Protestantism In Nineteenth-Century America
Nineteenth century America contained a baffling cluster of Protestant factions and categories, with
distinctive teachings, practices, and hierarchical structures. However, by the 1830s these bodies had a
profound zealous accentuation in like manner. Protestantism has constantly contained a critical
outreaching strain, yet it was in the nineteenth century that a specific style of zeal turned into the
overwhelming type of otherworldly expression. What most importantly else portrayed this zeal was its
dynamism, the pervasive feeling of lobbyist vitality it discharged. As Charles Grandison Finney, the
main outreaching of mid nineteenth century America, put it: religion is the work of man, it is
something for man to do. This fervent activism included a critical doctrinal move far from the
predominately Calvinist introduction that had portrayed a lot of eighteenth century American
Christianity.

What Is Substantive Conflict
Conflict happens when people do not agree in a public situation which developed resentments creating
a negative atmosphere among people or group (Schermerhorn, 2011). A person might develop
emotional conflict caused by anger, trusting issues and resentment which caused a negative energy
that affects other and becomes distracting (Schermerhorn, 2011). For instance, when an employee that
is having relationship problems outside work, affects their performance. Also, seeking comfort with
other employees can become a stressing situation. In contrast, substantive conflict is related to
achieving goals in the workplace (Schermerhorn, 2011). Dealing with coworkers can be challenging
because of their cultures. For instance, employees might disagree on task assignments, policies, and
rules because of their beliefs (Schermerhorn, 2011).
The problems associated with conflict are ignoring the issues. For instance, if the employee begins to

To resolve and avoid future conflict, they bought a lock box where the setting could be changed by
them. Conflict among the workplace might start as nothing but could have negative consequences if is
not addressed in a timely fashion matter.

Communicative Language Teaching
The Goal of Communicative Language Teaching Method: According to Cook (2003), the focus of
Communicative Language Teaching Method is primarily social. Therefore, its main goal is to enable
the learners to communicate successfully in the target language. In order to achieve that goal, the
learners have to be communicatively competent. Communicative competence can be defined
according to Saville and Troike (2003) as What a speaker needs to know to communicate
appropriately within a particular language community . Which means that the learners in
Communicative Language Teaching method will not only know the vocabulary, phonology and
grammar, but also they ll know how to use the language for several purposes, how to differentiate
between the uses of the language depending on the situations and the participants and they ll able to
classify and produce different kinds of texts. In addition, able to do all of these effectively with

I See The Desktop Picture Of My Grandfather s Computer Essay
Whenever I see the desktop picture of my Grandfather s computer, I remember the date of my new
journey. It s a pretty old photo and the background of it is a huge billboard with the phrase of Bon
Voyage in Chinese. What s more interesting is how the two boys in the front are expressing two totally
opposite facial expressions. The older one is trying his best to hold back to his tears and the younger
one is just fooling around by the travelers. The fulfilled up baggage carts and the screens of departure
times are a bit inharmonious to the overall setting, but it s the last picture before the older boy bursted
into tears. I can still remember every details before and after that day. It s a normal Tuesday morning
of my summer. Unlike the any usual morning, today, I wake up with the chatter of the sparrows. As
the warm orange embraces me through the French windows in my bedroom, I change into the clothes
that were place on my drawer since Sunday. While I was rushing out of the house to say goodbye to
my friends, I can still see the unfinished Lego on the couch since the first day of vacation, but addition
to that, there are twelve colorful suit cases and some of my Grandparents friends in the living room.
After some quick greetings and a very quick bite of breakfast, I am in the front of my best friend s
house. However, the only person that come out after my 10 minutes, unstopped pressing of doorbell is

Abstract
The purpose of this research is to show the effects of racism in America. Racism is defined as one
group assumes superiority over other groups that develop attitudes of arrogance and ignorance.
Despite many laws and legislation attempts to eliminate the evils of racism, the problem focuses on
the cultural differences of race, color and biological supremacy. Racism comes in the form of ethnic

Revolutionary Artillery in the Revolutionary War Essay
In 1775, thirteen colonies began a fight for their independence from Britain s rule. Without formal
training in artillery tactics or a proper armament of artillery pieces, early units had to overcome
adversity and hardship. But with courage and dedication the artillery and its leadership were able to
play a vital role in the success on the battlefields, and ultimately the victory resulting in America
earning its freedom.
During the Revolutionary War, the Artillery assets that were available were a combination of cannons,
mortars and howitzers. There were two types of cannons used at this time. The Field Guns, which
were lightweight and easier to move, and the Siege Guns, which were much heavier and less mobile.

The howitzer was originally designed with a short barrel and large caliber resulting in the charge to be
smaller so as not to add too much stress to the round inside. This meant that the howitzer was
primarily a short range weapon system. The estimated ranges of the artillery pieces are as follows, the
cannon fired with a maximum range of 2,000 yards and an effective range of 1,000 yards. The mortar
fired at a maximum range of 1,400 yards with an effective range of 750 yards and the howitzer fired at
a maximum range of 1,300 yards and an effective range of 750 yards.
Henry Knox played a pivotal role in the development of early artillery, from the acquiring cannons to
leading the regiment in battle his impact was unquestionably profound. One of his first exploits with
artillery was during the Battle of Bunker Hill, where he directed the rebel cannon fire onto enemy
formations. After Bunker Hill, Knox was aspiring to take command of the Continental Artillery from
Richard Gridley, however the process was slow due to the fact that Knox did not have a commission
in the Continental Army. John Adams worked with the Second Continental Congress to acquire a
commission for Knox as Colonel of the artillery regiment. Knox soon received his next mission from
General Washington, even before his commission had arrived. The Army had recently captured over

The economy of California is still a major risk taking economy, as it was back in the days of the Gold
Rush. Computer companies start and go broke everyday in silicon valley, producers spend millions of
dollars on movies, sometimes hitting it big, and other times going bust. California has gained many of
its traits and characteristics from the Gold Rush of 1849, shaping into what it is today.
What effects did the Gold Rush have on people? Some became forever rich, and some lost everything.
In 1849, California was a rather uncivilized place, especially San Francisco. Miner s came from every
where to try to find their fortune, but most fortunes weren t made mining gold, they were made
because of mining. Sam Brannan was one such man who made his fortune this way. Brannan bought
every shovel, pan, and every other mining related tool he could in the region. A twenty cent metal pan
now became a fifteen dollar pan, and the only place to buy them was from Sam Bannan. Levi Strauss,
a tailor who happened to have very popular canvas pants made his fortune from the Gold Rush. Phillip
Armour, of Armour Meat packing company, and John Studebaker just to name a couple more.
Unfortunately, not everybody could get rich, for every one person that struck it big; there were
thousands that didn t. It is not uncommon to hear stories of men leaving their wife, kids and

Vinland Map Research Paper
Vinland map essay A debate has been raging for decades about a simple map. This map was told to be
an authentic Viking map, but there are many skeptics of the authenticity. In the following essay, I will
attempt to prove that this map is a forgery, using evidence from both sides of the argument. According
to scholars there are many discrepancies in the actual makeup of the map. Proof of this is found in
tests that have shown that the ink is almost positively modern. The evidence is that older inks remain
dark under ultraviolet rays, while modern inks fluoresce, like the ink on the map did. Also, there are
overlapped colors of the map lines, which is an attempt to cause the observer to believe that some of
the ink has flaked off. But if that were true, the lines would perfectly overlay, and on the Vinland map
the lines are not always perfectly aligned. Some defenders of the map may point to the age of the
parchment as definite proof of its authenticity. This is interesting, because of how easily it could be
forged. The forger could have simply taken parchment from an old historical document and just drawn

For one, the Viking homeland of Scandinavia is depicted very inaccurately, which is extremely odd as
this is supposed to be a Viking map. In addition, there are multiple errors in the artistry of Greenland.
At the time this map was claimed to have been created, the ancient people thought Greenland was a
peninsula. Data wasn t provided until much later that proved Greenland was an island. Therefore,
there is one explanation for why Greenland was depicted as an island on a supposedly historical map.
That explanation is that this map is a lie! Secondly, the outline of Greenland s coast on the historic

An Argument Essay on the Use of Cell Phones in Public Places
Technological advances during the last fifty years of human history have given billions of people
instant access to unprecedented communication methods. Individuals are no longer limited to letter
writing and sending telegrams to convey a verbal message. E mails, text messaging, video chat, instant
messenger, and various social media outlets are all platforms for human communication in the modern
world. One of the most significant communication devices to surface from the technological serge is
the cellular telephone. Every individual with a cell phone has the ability to call any person, place, or
agency at anytime as long as the individual is within the service provider s coverage area. The
prevalence of cell phone owners has increased the use of cell phones in public places, such as schools,
restaurants, and theaters, and their use in public is associated with both positive and negative
implications. Some argue cell phones should be banned from public places because they are a social
distraction, inhibit the user from being able to focus properly, and can cause safety concerns by
interfering with airplanes and hospital equipment. Despite the negative impacts associated with cell
phone use in public places, cell phones must be allowed in public for safety reasons, emergency
scenarios, and to support the individual s right to personal freedom. Only a few short decades ago, the
thought of nearly every person on the planet having a personal, cellular phone in their

Compare And Contrast Colerridge And Wordsworth
Imagery has been one of the most pivotal movements in the cultural and intellectual history of English
Literature. The comparison is not only among the works of their own rather it also includes the
differences and traces of similarity with the works of others writers of different ages. The analysis is
done by reading the actual text and interpreting the meaning by understanding the deep phrases hidden
in the poetry. Different critics showed different aspects by their research. Some found out merits and
some found out demerits in the works of Wordsworth and Coleridge. The merits includes uniqueness,
healing power of poetry, and interpretation of their imagination for things whereas the demerits
include slack of humour, lack of range and lyricism in their poetry. On a whole Wordsworth and
Coleridge works have gained lot of interest and tempted many critics to write on their methods and
strategies which they adopted in their work. A new chapter in the history of English poetry opened
with the publication of Lyrical Ballads which were the results of Wordsworth and Coleridge friendship
after the revolution. They included two different kinds of poetry in these ballets. Wordsworth talked

A Comprehensive Analysis Of Davidson s Article,...
In Mark Davidson s article, Displacement, Space and Dwelling: Placing Gentrification Debate , he
cites several contemporary case studies where certain deteriorated areas have been targeted for
redevelopment and subsequent evictions have taken place. Using several philosophical authors, such
as Heidegger and Lefebvre, Davidson s focuses on the effect spatial metaphors have on displacement,
and how these concepts tie into the conceptualization of space. In this paper I will compile a thorough
summary of the article and formulate a comprehensive analysis of Davidson s arguments as well as his
sources. Davidson begins his article with arguably one of the most notable and recent subjects of
gentrification, 1520 Sedgwick, the birthplace of Hip Hop. This dilapidated apartment building s
owners announced they planned to leave New York State s Mitchell Lama programe (pg. 2), which
would result in the current residents evictions. Essentially the program offered tax incentives to
building owners who limit equity to maintain low cost units. However, in lieu of tax incentives many
building owners have elected to leave the program in order to make more profit via higher costing
units, which current residents cannot afford. In the case of 1520 Sedgwick current and former
residents, such as the credited father of Hip Hop Kool Herc, have veiled their mission to prevent the
gentrification process from consuming their building by petitioning for a historic listing as well as
offering to

Comparison Of Harrison Bergeron And Harrison Bergeron
The story Harrison Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegut Jr. and the short film 2081 directed by Chandler Tuttle
have many similarities and differences. Both the story and the short film are about a boy named
Harrison Bergeron who escaped from jail and ran off to a theater. He ended up in jail for tearing off
his handicaps in public. In their community, people have handicaps in order to be equal in every way.
In the short film, Hazel and George Bergeron, Harrison s parents, switched roles. Harrison also put a
bomb under the theater where the ballerinas were performing. Harrison was not even wearing glasses,
a red nose, he did not have bad teeth, he even had all his hair and his eyebrows. In these stories people
start to realize that the equality they ve always wanted is dangerous and in some ways torture. In the
story, Hazel and George were both sitting in their living room and watching a ballet performance on
TV. Then George gets up and goes to the kitchen and Hazel is alone. A news report comes on the TV
and it s about Harrison. The ballerina explained that Harrison escaped jail and that people should
avoid him. The ballerina stated If you see this boy, do not I repeat do not try to reason with him. (2) In
the film this scene changes in some ways. In the film Hazel is the one going to the kitchen to wash
dishes and George stays to watch the performance. He forgets everything he sees in a matter a twenty
seconds while watching Harrison live on TV. Even though he forgets everything he still has flashbacks
from when Harrison was carried out of their house. These changes affect the story because it was from
two different point of views. In Hazel s point of view some things don t make sense in general. Since
her brain is normal, unintelligent, she forgets everything. George is smart and that is why he has a
radio transmitter in his ear that sends out noise so that he can forget things. In the film Harrison puts a
bomb under the theater where the ballerinas were performing. The bomb could have been fake but it
made the film more intense. Harrison states ... there s a bomb beneath this theater and there s a
detonator in my hand... minute 9.50 9.58. He also states I am the greatest person man you have never

Why Gambling Should Not Be Prohibited Or Policed By The...
Gambling
In today s world there are many different types of gambling such as casinos, state lotteries, pull tabs,
bingo, sports and internet gambling. Popularity of this activity remains strong in America, however,
there are individuals and groups that continue to scrutinize and attack this industry. I believe gambling
is a fun social activity that should not be prohibited or policed by the federal government. It should be
an individual s right to choose if they gamble or not based on their own personal beliefs and view
point. The history of gambling can be traced back as far back as ancient times. Dice have been
recovered in Egyptian tombs. The British colonization of America was partly financed through lottery
proceeds. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There is also the moral component. Some would argue that gambling is immorally wrong and a threat
to public virtue, however based on a national survey done in 1998, three of four Americans who attend
church on a regular basis consider casino gambling an acceptable form of entertainment. (Fahrenkopf
109). Churches also host bingo events to raise money for charity. Pull tabs are sold to raise money for
community organizations such as fire departments. The fact is people are more likely to play bingo or
purchase pull tabs than to offer a donation to an organization. Socialization plays a key role in this as
well. Activities such as bingo brings individuals together and pulls them away from their electronic
devices. In these situations the dollars are often minimal per individual, however the return to the
charity can be grand. If you re doing something that benefits someone else how can that be wrong? A
perception exists that the lottery is predominantly played by poor people, however, this is inaccurate.
Based on a recent Gallup Poll statistics showed that people with incomes of $45,000 $75,000 were
most likely to play the lottery. In addition, people with income greater than $75,000 spend roughly
three times as much on lotteries than those with incomes under $25,000. (North

Reconstruction Dbq
The Reconstruction Era in the United States was a time from 1865 1877 when the government made
the attempt to revitalize the South after the Civil War. This movement was begun by President
Abraham Lincoln and continued after his assassination by his successor, Andrew Johnson. The focus
of this era was on an economic, political, and social level in the South. Numerous bills and acts were
passed throughout the years to assist in strengthening and enforcing rules that would essentially turn
back the clock for the South. Although, at the time, this was thought to be an excellent way to reform
the nation, many disagree and believe it was a failure until World War II and after President Franklin
Roosevelt s New Deal.

The South s secession lasted 4 years, and Reconstruction brought the Union and Confederacy together
and once again restored what we know as the United States. New and improved laws were put in place
to protect the rights of newly freed men. Freedmen s Bureau and many other smaller associations were
formed. These helped Southerners and African Americans who were in need. For example, they
helped those who were homeless, hungry, and poor. The Compromise of 1877 played a large role in
Reconstruction, stating that the Republicans could vote for another Republican to become a nation
leader, as long as they assisted in rebuilding the South ( Reconstruction ). Another important act that
positively affected the nation was the Enforcement Act of 1870. This act banned the use of terror,
force, or bribery to prevent people from voting because of their race. Overall, it helped reinforce some
of the positive effects of this era (Cas). Possibly the the most important legacies left from the
Reconstruction Era include amendments 13, 14, and 15. Amendment Thirteen abolished slavery
throughout the nation. Amendment Fourteen defined citizenship and gave all citizens of America

The Never Ending Cycle
The Never Ending Cycle
Everyone has heard someone comment on poverty in the United States. Some people say, the poor
have only themselves to blame for their situation. Or, why don t they get a job? This is the problem
with society today; the different levels of the class structure have grown so far apart from one another
they cannot even relate to one another. People look down on the poor as unmotivated and lazy when,
in fact, it is not their fault, but the fault of a society that does not value people of wage labor. In our
society today poverty is a never ending cycle that feeds off itself, making the rich richer and the poor
poorer. There are three main factors that can be brought up when talking about the cycle of poverty; ...
Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The problem with poverty is more deeply rooted than just the decision to attend school. Poverty also is
a factor of something the poor have absolutely no control over, the redistribution or dispersion of
money. This is the deciding factor in how the classes are formed. If the government does not
redistribute the wealth evenly throughout the class system, gaps appear. This is exactly what is
happening in today s society. Under the new policies of our president the richest one percent have
taken a 25 percent income tax cut while the poorest 20 percent have taken a 1.2 percent tax cut (Bush
Tax Cut Plan). It is said that the rich will spend their money on goods and services throughout the
economy, essentially trickling down or giving the money to the poor through businesses, but it has not
worked to date. From this theory we find that the cycle continues; the rich get richer and the poor get
poorer. So where does all this tax money go; shouldn t it be given back to the poor? In the poor s eyes,
yes it should, but in the rich people s eyes, no it shouldn t and so it does not. Sure, the government
puts some taxes towards welfare, but, in fact, roughly 38 percent of the federal income goes right to
the military cause (War Resisters League). Only about 30 percent of the federal income is spent on
human resources such as welfare and medicare. The money that can

Ancient Heroes Vs. Modern Heroes
Ancient Heroes VS. Modern Heroes
Heroes are prevalent in everyone s life. Whether someone s hero is a living person or a fabled
character from a movie, everybody has come into contact with some sort of hero. In fact, the concept
of heroes has existed for hundreds of years, dating all the way back to Ancient Greece. Over time,
heroes have drastically changed. As society has evolved, our heroes have evolved with it. Their goals
and motivations have changed to coincide with the views of modern society. Modern day heroes have
less selfish motives, better qualities, and are portrayed differently than ancient heroes.
The word heroism brings to mind different things to different people. This is because people tend to
have different concepts of heroism and what it means. The definition of heroism has changed a lot
since ancient times and will continue to change. Despite these changes, there are a few things about
heroes that will never change. A hero can be described as a person who is admired or idealized for
courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities. Both ancient and modern day heroes are
idealized for possessing these traits. Heroes, no matter from what time period, will always be
powerful, strong, brave, and valued.
In ancient times, heroes had a different motivation for performing good deeds than they do now. Life
was a lot harder during these times because food, water, and timber for building was scarce. This
caused many ancient heroes to have selfish motives.

Nonviolent Direct Action Is An Option
Violence is an option that is heavily debated when taking action. It can often result in complete chaos
and not accomplish the original purpose of the action. Nonviolent direct action is another option that is
contemplated. It involves the use of direct action without violent force to get the point of the action
known. Examples of nonviolent direct action would include strikes and protests. The use of such
action is often best implemented in human experience that involve discrimination. Differences in race,
gender, or religious affiliation can often cause discrimination. Individuals in minority groups are seen
as unequal to the majority and can be easily be discriminated against. To promote change, minority
groups often take actions. The action can either involve violence or exclude it. Violent force can
degrade the appearance of the individuals and create more anger between the two opposing sides. The
use of non violent direct action shows more humility of those who are being discriminated against.
Others being to understand the issue without creating chaos. Non violent direct action can also be used
for political purposes. Protestors can often be found outside of government buildings demanding
change. It also works well in this aspect because it can be more powerful than the use of violence. The

effectively. I. Introduction A. What are ABS (Anti lock Braking System) B. Popularity of ABS II.

II. What Anti lock brakes do and don t do Many car owners don t know how to use antilock brakes
effectively and the manuals that come with their automobiles offer little help. Some of the manuals
don t spell out how using antilock brakes is different from using regular brakes. Some manufacturers
provide no instructions at all. Traditionally, drivers are trained to brake gently on slippery roads or to
pump their brakes to avoid a skid. But it is firm, continuous brake pressure that is required to activate
anti locks, which should never be pumped. This is exactly what the antilock feature does for the driver
automatically, it pumps the brakes many times a second. With the driver pumping antilock brakes
during a skid, braking effectiveness may be reduced to the point of not having brakes at all. Because
of misconceptions about the circumstances in which antilock brakes can help, it s useful to review
what they can and cannot do. In normal braking, a vehicle slows as its wheels are gradually brought to
a stop. Without antilock brakes, hard or emergency braking will cause the wheels to lock before the
vehicle comes to a halt. In this case, some or all of the tires skid along the road. How the vehicle skids
depends on the coefficient of friction, or drag factor, between the tires and the road surface. A vehicle
may skid forward in a straight line or it may

North London Book Of The Dead Character Analysis
The North London Book of the Dead is part of the compilation of short stories named The Quantity
Theory of Insanity (1991) written by Will Self. A British author whose writing is characterised by a
sense lightweight humor and fantastical themes, The North London Book of the Dead follows the
narrative of a son who had lost his mother to cancer, only to meet her again alive and well in a
different part of London. Instead of using descriptive devices to create an eerie mood, Self uses these
to create a familiar setting that does not make any room for doubt. Using a comic style of writing that
reflects British culture and humor does not only further assist in establishing a common atmosphere
for the reader to assimilate into, but it pushes back ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In addition to his encounter with Mother and how she had changed, her reaction to him pointing out
her dead status is also repeated from another of his dreams. He describes in his dreams, When I tried
to remonstrate with her, point out to her that by her own lights (she was a fervent atheist and
materialist), she ought to be gently decomposing somewhere, she would fix me with a weary eye and
say in a characteristically deadpan way, So I m dead but won t lie down, huh? Big deal. Upon their
encounter, the same situation had transpired: But Mother, what are you doing in Crouch End? You re
dead. Mother was indignant, Of course I m dead, dummy, whaddya think I ve been doing for the last
ten months? Cruising the Caribbean? The message he never received followed by Mother s phone call
creates an unnerving ending by providing a third person to the situation. A coworker, his bewilderment
arouses all the possibilities of different interpretations of the story because of his third person
objectivity. Whether Mother is a hallucination, a doppelgänger, or the real Mother, it seems to be
deliberately left open by the author by placing such a simple event as the ending of the story. The
North London Book of the Dead uses the devices of how to establish the uncanny but executes them
unconventionally. Intertwining the ordinary and unknown seamlessly, all the while keeping its satirical
tone, the story creates something that stimulates thoughts rather than nightmare

Examples Of Love At First Sight In Romeo And Juliet
Love at first sight does not exist. Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy that starts with love at first sight.
Shakespeare developed two ignorant, naïve, stubborn, narrow minded, teenaged characters that ended
up taking their own lives because they were led into temptation. A few examples of the temptation in
which they were led were when Romeo was persuaded to go to a party without an invitation. That and
they decided to get married without telling their parents the day after they met, and Juliet was
basically engaged to Paris with a wedding date mere weeks from the day they got married. Amongst
all these things, Romeo showed how impatient and hard headed he was when he left Mantua, where he
was told to wait for Juliet s letter, and went to her ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This was where he met the beauty he didn t know as a Capulet, and she felt the same way, which
created the love at first sight. This created the fast paced relationship that was what got them killed.
Romeo and Juliet had to know this was going to happen, and not just because the priest had said,
Those who run quickly stumble, (Shakespeare s Romeo and Juliet). His statement means things take
time. Romeo and Juliet proved their minds were narrow once more when they got married after a day
of knowing each other, without their parent s consent, and Juliet was already to marry Paris weeks
later. Instead Juliet married Romeo, a Montague, her family s rival family. Juliet even said, My only
love sprung from my only hate, (Shakespeare). If they would have told someone they could have
resolved the issue like adults but instead show how immature and hard head they were. Another thing
that proved they fell into something bad, and not into love, was when Romeo was in Mantua, waiting
as he was told, and decides to say, I defy you, stars, (Shakespeare). He literally said he knew it wasn t
supposed to happen and still did it. He knew defying destiny that was in the stars wasn t something he
should do, but still committed these actions repeatedly throughout the

Invictus Essay
This poems main theme is essentially choice The poem depicts the narrator suffering with something,
(after a bit of research, it turns out the narrator was struggling with recovery, from tuberculosis, that he
had contacted in childhood. ) Despite suffering, and being scarred, the narrator chooses to face his
ailment head on. First, looking at the title of the poem, Invictus, this is a Latin word, that translates to
undefeated in English. The whole theme of being undefeated grows more apparent throughout the
entire poem. The first stanza, reads as very dark. The darkness isn t literal, and its not necessarily even
night time, its more of a metaphor for the how gloomy and dejected the narrators circumstances are. In
a way the narrator prays to some sort of higher power, however instead of praying to be given
strength, or even to be cured, the narrator thanks the Gods for the strength, and perseverance, that he
already possesses, he thanks them for his unconquerable soul. ... Show more content on

This part of the poem focuses on how the narrator didn t have much choice in what is happening to
him, he fell into the clutches of circumstance. In spite of this, the narrator still remains head strong,
and faces the problem, without complaining about it. The narrator has been plagued with this ailment,
by The bludgeons of chance. Within this stanza there is also some alliteration which can be found with
In the fell Clutch of Circumstance, I have not winced nor Cried aloud. and in Under the Bludgeonings
of chance, My head is Bloody, but unBowed. The alliteration really aids in the flow of the poem,
making it easy to follow, and

“What Are the Major Strengths and Weakness of Dworkin’s...
What are the major strengths and weakness of Dworkin s theory of law as compared to a positivist or
natural law perspective? Discuss.
Arguably one of the most influential legal theorists of the 20th century, Ronald Dworkin s dealings
with law s interpretation and integrity has lead to inevitable contradictions with that of positivist
ideology, with his work essentially revitalising a method of thinking that had long been considered
dead and buried. Perhaps most notoriously, Dworkin combated the positivist theory of his former
teacher and predecessor as Professor of Jurisprudence at Oxford University, H.L.A. Hart. When
comparing the two, it is apparent that Dworkin and Hart disagree on a plethora of issues, however
there exist several ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As such, it is possible that numerous conflicting principles may exist in the one scenario. Dworkin
even goes further by introducing the concept of policy defining a policy as that kind of standard that
sets out a goal to be reached, generally an improvement in some economic, political, or social feature
of the community .
The famous US decision of Riggs v Palmer serves to illustrate a considerable strength in Dworkin s
argument concerning rules and principles. The New York court had to decide a case to determine
whether a grandson who poisoned his grandfather to obtain his inheritance was in fact able to collect
such an inheritance. At the time, there existed no statute or law that invalidated his claim as a
beneficiary due to his involvement in the murder. Furthermore, the applicable legal rule seemed to be
that legacies contained in legally valid testamentary dispositions are to be guaranteed by law in
accordance with the wishes of the testator. According to Hart, the court should, in this situation, be
decided upon pre existing law. Yet despite this, the court majority found that the grandson could not
inherit, instead appealing to moral reasoning by citing the principle that no one should be able to profit
from ones crimes. A similar decision based on principle was handed down 70 years later in the case of
Henningsen v Bloomfield Motors Inc. As a result of these cases, Dworkin is able

  • 2. Analysis Of The Book The Things They Carried 1. Birth October 1, 1946; present 2. The things they carried was written in the late 1980 s and published in 1990. The novel acts as a response to the era it discusses by solidifying the un generalized version of war through fictional anecdotes from the narrator and characters. The truth is never portrayed through historic context or media, and with this novel, the author was able to reciprocate the emotions felt by soldiers from the graphic scenes or actions envisioned/written. 3. Factors that influenced the author to publish this novel was partly due to his way of coping after war, using stories to keep the imagination alive and causing the audience to reflect on their own lives. Another is telling an honest view of the what war really is and how the soldiers were affected from the start of being drafted until life after the Vietnam War, trying to find their identity. 4. The novel version I used was paperback. To complete this section, I used websites for articles about O Brien s biography, interviews from the author himself, and different analysis of the novel as my sources to understand the varied perspectives. II. Diction: 1. The diction for this novel is connotative. Although his writing can be straightforward and literal, his reflection can provide varied meanings to what his ideas are. The author often changes literary devices to get his point across. In one chapter, he can be specific on the little details that depicts one s entity and then he can take ... Using the early sign of issues with Hall s team s progress, it was obvious that the probability of failing the expedition was high before the team even started. Hall could have used the issues as a sign of the complex systems that exist, and could have used this knowledge to prevent any irrational decisions. The complex systems and the lack of psychological safety also contributed to the tragedy. The team members failed to communicate and trust each other, which then added more problems to the complex systems. This map was told to be an authentic Viking map, but there are many skeptics of the authenticity. In the following essay, I will attempt to prove that this map is a forgery, using evidence from both sides of the argument. According to scholars there are many discrepancies in the actual makeup of the map. Proof of this is found in tests that have shown that the ink is almost positively modern. The evidence is that older inks remain dark under ultraviolet rays, while modern inks fluoresce, like the ink on the map did. Also, there are overlapped colors of the map lines, which is an attempt to cause the observer to believe that some of the ink has flaked off. But if that were true, the lines would perfectly overlay, and on the Vinland map the lines are not always perfectly aligned. • 23. An Argument Essay on the Use of Cell Phones in Public Places Technological advances during the last fifty years of human history have given billions of people instant access to unprecedented communication methods. Individuals are no longer limited to letter writing and sending telegrams to convey a verbal message. E mails, text messaging, video chat, instant messenger, and various social media outlets are all platforms for human communication in the modern world. One of the most significant communication devices to surface from the technological serge is the cellular telephone. Every individual with a cell phone has the ability to call any person, place, or agency at anytime as long as the individual is within the service provider s coverage area. The prevalence of cell phone owners has increased the use of cell phones in public places, such as schools, restaurants, and theaters, and their use in public is associated with both positive and negative implications. Some argue cell phones should be banned from public places because they are a social distraction, inhibit the user from being able to focus properly, and can cause safety concerns by interfering with airplanes and hospital equipment. Despite the negative impacts associated with cell phone use in public places, cell phones must be allowed in public for safety reasons, emergency scenarios, and to support the individual s right to personal freedom. The comparison is not only among the works of their own rather it also includes the differences and traces of similarity with the works of others writers of different ages. The analysis is done by reading the actual text and interpreting the meaning by understanding the deep phrases hidden in the poetry. Different critics showed different aspects by their research. Some found out merits and some found out demerits in the works of Wordsworth and Coleridge. The merits includes uniqueness, healing power of poetry, and interpretation of their imagination for things whereas the demerits include slack of humour, lack of range and lyricism in their poetry. On a whole Wordsworth and Coleridge works have gained lot of interest and tempted many critics to write on their methods and strategies which they adopted in their work. A new chapter in the history of English poetry opened with the publication of Lyrical Ballads which were the results of Wordsworth and Coleridge friendship after the revolution. • 26. A Comprehensive Analysis Of Davidson s Article,... In Mark Davidson s article, Displacement, Space and Dwelling: Placing Gentrification Debate , he cites several contemporary case studies where certain deteriorated areas have been targeted for redevelopment and subsequent evictions have taken place. Using several philosophical authors, such as Heidegger and Lefebvre, Davidson s focuses on the effect spatial metaphors have on displacement, and how these concepts tie into the conceptualization of space. In this paper I will compile a thorough summary of the article and formulate a comprehensive analysis of Davidson s arguments as well as his sources. Davidson begins his article with arguably one of the most notable and recent subjects of gentrification, 1520 Sedgwick, the birthplace of Hip Hop. This dilapidated apartment building s owners announced they planned to leave New York State s Mitchell Lama programe (pg. 2), which would result in the current residents evictions. Essentially the program offered tax incentives to building owners who limit equity to maintain low cost units. However, in lieu of tax incentives many building owners have elected to leave the program in order to make more profit via higher costing units, which current residents cannot afford. In the case of 1520 Sedgwick current and former residents, such as the credited father of Hip Hop Kool Herc, have veiled their mission to prevent the gentrification process from consuming their building by petitioning for a historic listing as well as offering to ... • 30. Comparison Of Harrison Bergeron And Harrison Bergeron The story Harrison Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegut Jr. and the short film 2081 directed by Chandler Tuttle have many similarities and differences. Both the story and the short film are about a boy named Harrison Bergeron who escaped from jail and ran off to a theater. He ended up in jail for tearing off his handicaps in public. In their community, people have handicaps in order to be equal in every way. In the short film, Hazel and George Bergeron, Harrison s parents, switched roles. Harrison also put a bomb under the theater where the ballerinas were performing. Harrison was not even wearing glasses, a red nose, he did not have bad teeth, he even had all his hair and his eyebrows. In these stories people start to realize that the equality they ve always wanted is dangerous and in some ways torture. In the story, Hazel and George were both sitting in their living room and watching a ballet performance on TV. Then George gets up and goes to the kitchen and Hazel is alone. A news report comes on the TV and it s about Harrison. The ballerina explained that Harrison escaped jail and that people should avoid him. The ballerina stated If you see this boy, do not I repeat do not try to reason with him. (2) In the film this scene changes in some ways. In the film Hazel is the one going to the kitchen to wash dishes and George stays to watch the performance. He forgets everything he sees in a matter a twenty seconds while watching Harrison live on TV. Even though he forgets everything he still has flashbacks from when Harrison was carried out of their house. These changes affect the story because it was from two different point of views. In Hazel s point of view some things don t make sense in general. Since her brain is normal, unintelligent, she forgets everything. George is smart and that is why he has a radio transmitter in his ear that sends out noise so that he can forget things. In the film Harrison puts a bomb under the theater where the ballerinas were performing. The bomb could have been fake but it made the film more intense. The fact is people are more likely to play bingo or purchase pull tabs than to offer a donation to an organization. Socialization plays a key role in this as well. Activities such as bingo brings individuals together and pulls them away from their electronic devices. Poverty also is a factor of something the poor have absolutely no control over, the redistribution or dispersion of money. This is the deciding factor in how the classes are formed. Under the new policies of our president the richest one percent have taken a 25 percent income tax cut while the poorest 20 percent have taken a 1.2 percent tax cut (Bush Tax Cut Plan). It is said that the rich will spend their money on goods and services throughout the economy, essentially trickling down or giving the money to the poor through businesses, but it has not worked to date. From this theory we find that the cycle continues; the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. So where does all this tax money go; shouldn t it be given back to the poor? In the poor s eyes, yes it should, but in the rich people s eyes, no it shouldn t and so it does not. Sure, the government puts some taxes towards welfare, but, in fact, roughly 38 percent of the federal income goes right to the military cause (War Resisters League). What Anti lock brakes do and don t do Many car owners don t know how to use antilock brakes effectively and the manuals that come with their automobiles offer little help. Some of the manuals don t spell out how using antilock brakes is different from using regular brakes. Some manufacturers provide no instructions at all. Traditionally, drivers are trained to brake gently on slippery roads or to pump their brakes to avoid a skid. But it is firm, continuous brake pressure that is required to activate anti locks, which should never be pumped. This is exactly what the antilock feature does for the driver automatically, it pumps the brakes many times a second. With the driver pumping antilock brakes during a skid, braking effectiveness may be reduced to the point of not having brakes at all. Because of misconceptions about the circumstances in which antilock brakes can help, it s useful to review what they can and cannot do. In normal braking, a vehicle slows as its wheels are gradually brought to a stop. Without antilock brakes, hard or emergency braking will cause the wheels to lock before the vehicle comes to a halt. • 42. Examples Of Love At First Sight In Romeo And Juliet Love at first sight does not exist. Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy that starts with love at first sight. Shakespeare developed two ignorant, naïve, stubborn, narrow minded, teenaged characters that ended up taking their own lives because they were led into temptation. A few examples of the temptation in which they were led were when Romeo was persuaded to go to a party without an invitation. That and they decided to get married without telling their parents the day after they met, and Juliet was basically engaged to Paris with a wedding date mere weeks from the day they got married. Amongst all these things, Romeo showed how impatient and hard headed he was when he left Mantua, where he was told to wait for Juliet s letter, and went to her ... This created the fast paced relationship that was what got them killed. Romeo and Juliet had to know this was going to happen, and not just because the priest had said, Those who run quickly stumble, (Shakespeare s Romeo and Juliet). His statement means things take time. Romeo and Juliet proved their minds were narrow once more when they got married after a day of knowing each other, without their parent s consent, and Juliet was already to marry Paris weeks later. Instead Juliet married Romeo, a Montague, her family s rival family. Juliet even said, My only love sprung from my only hate, (Shakespeare). If they would have told someone they could have resolved the issue like adults but instead show how immature and hard head they were. Another thing that proved they fell into something bad, and not into love, was when Romeo was in Mantua, waiting as he was told, and decides to say, I defy you, stars, (Shakespeare). He literally said he knew it wasn t supposed to happen and still did it. He knew defying destiny that was in the stars wasn t something he should do, but still committed these actions repeatedly throughout the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 44. “What Are the Major Strengths and Weakness of Dworkin’s... What are the major strengths and weakness of Dworkin s theory of law as compared to a positivist or natural law perspective? Discuss. Arguably one of the most influential legal theorists of the 20th century, Ronald Dworkin s dealings with law s interpretation and integrity has lead to inevitable contradictions with that of positivist ideology, with his work essentially revitalising a method of thinking that had long been considered dead and buried. Perhaps most notoriously, Dworkin combated the positivist theory of his former teacher and predecessor as Professor of Jurisprudence at Oxford University, H.L.A. Hart. When comparing the two, it is apparent that Dworkin and Hart disagree on a plethora of issues, however there exist several ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As such, it is possible that numerous conflicting principles may exist in the one scenario. Dworkin even goes further by introducing the concept of policy defining a policy as that kind of standard that sets out a goal to be reached, generally an improvement in some economic, political, or social feature of the community . The famous US decision of Riggs v Palmer serves to illustrate a considerable strength in Dworkin s argument concerning rules and principles. The New York court had to decide a case to determine whether a grandson who poisoned his grandfather to obtain his inheritance was in fact able to collect such an inheritance. At the time, there existed no statute or law that invalidated his claim as a beneficiary due to his involvement in the murder. Furthermore, the applicable legal rule seemed to be that legacies contained in legally valid testamentary dispositions are to be guaranteed by law in accordance with the wishes of the testator. According to Hart, the court should, in this situation, be decided upon pre existing law. Yet despite this, the court majority found that the grandson could not inherit, instead appealing to moral reasoning by citing the principle that no one should be able to profit from ones crimes. A similar decision based on principle was handed down 70 years later in the case of Henningsen v Bloomfield Motors Inc. As a result of these cases, Dworkin is able ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
