There are now approximately 170 various denominations that identify as Pentecostal.
The Charismatic movement, or neo Pentecostalism, was born in 1960 when Episcopal
priest Dennis Bennett, during the Passion Sunday service, both spoke in tongues and
announced that he had received baptism in the Holy Spirit. Although this event is
associated with the official beginning of the Charismatic movement, it must be noted
that many other Pentecostals and even mainline Christians are considered essential to

Brown, and Lutheran minister Harald Bredesen. Those who embrace the beliefs and

Phenomenology is a philosophical movement which emerged at the end of the
nineteenth century in the school of Franz Brentano. It was developed by Edmund
Husserl and subsequently modified by his successors Heidegger and Merleau Ponty
and Sarte among many others. It is hard to summarise their shared philosophical
beliefs as one as each had differing views on what phenomenology should entail. For
the purpose of this essay I will examine phenomenology in general, what it
accomplished and why it is important. The birth of phenomenology is said to have
begun with Husserl s book Logical Investigations which was written at the beginning
of the twentieth century.
Phenomenology is made up of two Greek words: phainesthai which Heidegger takes
to mean to make appear and phos which is translated as bring into the light .
Phenomenology grasps the essence of phenomena in the manner that it candidly
shows itself, without applying external theories to phenomena. Husserl writes that
throughout phenomenology one must have the courage to accept what is really to be
seen in the phenomenon precisely as it presents itself rather than interpreting it away,
and to honestly describe it. All theories must be directed accordingly. It is the first
person s conscious experience. Primary philosophical issues are looked at through the
ways in which things come to light through the first person s conscious experience.

It is interesting to notice how Sandra Cisneros uses the image of pain in her
dramatic monologue Pumpkin Eater to show how the narrator s husband
drastically pushed the narrator to an extent. She became sick of their relationship,

Pumpkin Eater , based on a nursery rhyme called Peter Peter Pumpkin Eater . The

Throughout history people of different races and ethnic backgrounds have struggled
to get along and accept each other. In Michael Blake s novel, Dances With Wolves,
Lieutenant John Dunbar s life changes after he becomes involved with the Comanche
Indians. After a short period of time, both Dunbar and the Indians learn to trust each
other. Through literary terms such as foreshadowing, symbolism, and similes, Blake
proves the idea that love, friendship, belonging, and connection can be found between
people of different backgrounds and races.

He chooses to use these similes so readers can understand the relationship between
Dunbar and the Indians. For example, the author utilizes a simile to describe
Dunbar s relation with Wind In His Hair and Stone Calf. They were as smug as
schoolboys (Blake 275). Blake compares the relationship between the Indian
warriors and Dunbar to schoolboys. By doing this, Blake implies that the men are
comfortable together and and accepting of each other. Also, at this point in the book,

many other quotes to demonstrate the strong relationship between the Indians and

about Dunbar. By mentioning that he smiles, the quote proves is happy and excited
to be with the Indians. Also, by comparing Dunbar to the only boy in class who know
the answer, it tells readers that Dunbar is wise. He is smart not only for guessing
correctly what the Indians are trying to communicate to him, but he is also smart for
building this relationship with the Indians. Like the first example, this quote refers to
a school setting. Dunbar smiling shows that he has a good relationship with his

The short story Cathedral by Raymond Carver is told from the perspective of a first
person narrator. Throughout the story, the narrator is self absorbed in his own
thoughts and emotions and fails in his willingness to overlook personal insecurities
in order to accommodate others discomfort, i.e. predominantly his wife and the
blind man. In general, the story lacks figurative language and is told in short, direct
sentences. This basic structure leaves a lot for the reader to interpret on his or her
own. I focused on two paragraphs within Raymond Carver s short story. The first
section is the fifth paragraph in the story beginning with But instead of dying... and
concluding with all I wanted to. To make it less complicated throughout my paper, I
will refer to this segment as Section 1. The second section I used is the seventh
paragraph in the short story, which begins with Beulah had gone to work... and ends
with Pathetic. I will refer to this segment as Section 2. Both of these paragraphs hold
significance both in themselves alone as well as when applied together. In Section 1,
the protagonist provides a subjective, narrow report of his wife s past. Throughout his
