A salivary mucocele is a collection of saliva that forms a cyst when saliva leaks out of a damaged salivary gland or duct and becomes surrounded by granulation tissue. It can occur in various locations depending on the affected gland. Salivary mucoceles typically form due to trauma that blocks the normal flow of saliva, causing it to accumulate and irritate the surrounding tissue. While medical management aims to drain the fluid, it is not effective long term as the underlying cause remains. Surgical excision of the affected gland is the preferred treatment approach to fully remove the source of fluid accumulation and prevent recurrence.
